Welcome to the nineteenth meeting of the 2020/21 Qatari racing season, HH The Amir Sword Festival, QREC management would like to thank you for your attendance. This meeting is one of the most historic racing festivals in Qatar and is always full of quality both from familiar shores and from all around the world. Once again, the International contingent is a strong one, with high-class horses from as far afield as Britain, Ireland, Spain and France all featuring in the entries for many of our big races this week. These worldwide contenders, combined with homegrown talent, add colour and flavour to races like the Gr 2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup, the Gr1 Qatar International Cup, the Gr2 Al Biddah Mile and of course the two headline Group 1 contests, HH The Amir Trophy and HH The Amir Sword. We welcome everyone joining us from further afield this week and hope that you enjoy your time here. From the face-off between legends of the turf, Tayf and Ebraz, in HH The Amir Sword, to HH The Amir Trophy’s exciting entries in the shape of Aspetar and Noor Al Hawa, this week promises to be a thrilling exhibition of racing in Qatar and we’re all looking forward to seeing the action on the track. HH THE AMIR SWORD AND HH THE AMIR TROPHY 2020

The H.H The Amir Sword Festival is the highlight of the racing season here in Qatar, attracting high-quality international horses and jockeys who come to compete for the prestigious prizes. The Festival was held from 20th to 22nd February last year with the excellent three days of racing leading up to the feature Group 1 contests on the final day, the H.H The Amir Trophy and the H.H The Amir Sword.

QATAR 2 0 2 1 RAYYAN RACECOURSE

The 2020 renewal of the H.H The Amir Trophy (QA Gr 1) saw a strong representation from France with four French-trained horses in the line-up, included the 2019 winner of the race French King. The five-year-old was bidding to retain his crown for trainer Henri-Alex Pantall and jockey Oliver Peslier and he arrived having added another Group 1 to his name in Germany in August, before his latest run came in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. However, French King faced tough opposition from fellow French horses Pedro Cara and Royal Julius, with the former having won the Qatar Derby here on his most recent start for Mauricio Delcher Sanchez, while the Jerome Reynier-trained Royal Julius had been successful in the Bahrain International Trophy. Another international contender in the line-up was the American raider Standard Deviation for Graham Motion, while the best of the home team looked to be Noor Al Hawa who had won at Group 2 level on his penultimate start for Georges Mikhalides. The full line-up for the race had won eighty races between them and it was French King who went forward early in the contest under Olivier Peslier to take up the lead. He set a good pace with Royal Julius settled in behind the leader by Stephane Pasquier and the H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned pair of Pedro Cara and Standard Deviation sitting in midfield for jockeys Tony Piccone and Oisin Murphy. It proved to be a fantastic ride by Peslier as he kicked for home early in the straight and then was not for catching, with Standard Deviation and Pedro Cara running on well but to no avail. It was an excellent performance by French King as he made it back-to-back wins in the H.H The Amir Trophy with a two and a half-length victory. The finale of the H.H The Amir Sword Festival is the prestigious H.H The Amir Sword (Gr1 PA) and last year saw Ebraz bid to make it a historic third success in the race. Trained by Julian Colin Smart, Ebraz was aiming to add the Triple Crown to his long CV in the H.H The Amir Sword having already won the Qatar International Stakes and Qatar Arabian World Cup at ParisLongchamp earlier in the season. Up against Ebraz was a strong challenge from Alban Elie De Mieulle as the trainer saddled four horses, including Tayf and Yazeed who had both won Group races on their previous starts. The stablemates Tayf and Yazeed were drawn next to each other in stalls seven and eight and from the start they tracked across under Soufiane Saadi and Olivier Peslier to sit in midfield, with Ebraz positioned on their inside by Maxime Guyon after beginning from the inside stall. Ebraz still looked to have a lot of work to do turning for home with only two rivals behind him but the race opened up for him down the straight and he picked up powerfully in between Tayf and Yazeed to go clear for a one and three-quarter length success, with Tayf battling on to finish second ahead of Yazeed.

RACE 1

The first of nine races, the three-year-old Local Thoroughbred Maiden Plate, was taken in impressive style by the Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki-trained Al Gamamah, who drew almost four lengths clear under Champion jockey Ronan Thomas.

RACE 2

Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki quickly made it a double on the day as jockey Carlos Henrique partnered Lehwaila to a two-length victory in the Local Thoroughbred Handicap.

RACE 3

Wakeel ran out a winner of the Thoroughbred Maiden Plate by a length under jockey Khalid Al Balushi, giving trainer Mohammed Ghazali his first winner of the meeting.

RACE 4

It was a close contest in the Thoroughbred Novice Plate, but it was I Am Thunder for trainer Hamad Al-Jehani and jockey Alberto Sanna who passed the post first, defeating Angelic Queen and stablemate Tuff Rock.

RACE 5

Al-Jehani saddled a quick-fire double as Shaweesh was an easy winner of the Local Purebred Arabian Novice Plate half an hour later, drawing just over three lengths clear of the field under jockey Rashid Ali Al-Marri.

RACE 6

Latam was an easy winner of the Purebred Arabian Novice Plate under jockey Tomas Lukasek, with his three-length win giving trainer Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki his third winner of the meeting.

RACE 7

The Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 65-75 saw the four-year-old Huwaiteb take the spoils by three and a half lengths for trainer Mohammed Riyaz in an impressive performance under Alberto Sanna – the jockey’s second victory of the day.

RACE 8

Superior Moment was just that in the Class 4 Thoroughbred Handicap over 1100m, winning cosily for trainer Zuhair Mohsen with jockey Soufiane Saadi the man doing the steering.

RACE 9

Headlining the card was the Al Wajba Cup for Thoroughbreds and it was trainer Hamad Al Jehani who wrapped up a treble on the card courtesy of Zarandi, who was an exciting three-length winner under Ronan Thomas, who secured a double of his own.
