Royal Ascot 2020 – Taking place safely behind closed doors Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending will be required to travel directly to and from the fixtures, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance at Royal Ascot is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse, jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media. All attendees at Royal Ascot will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19. 2 - An online health questionnaire – completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance. 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival at the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times. There are a small number of situations where social distancing will not be able to be maintained, albeit very briefly, such as legging up or loading horses into the stalls. PPE and/or face coverings will be worn within the racecourse by personnel who are unable to maintain social distancing. This will include jockeys, stalls handlers, stable staff, trainers and veterinary teams. Field sizes have been limited to 24 at Royal Ascot to help ensure social distancing throughout the site. For more information on how racing at Royal Ascot and other racecourses is taking place safely, please visit the British Horseracing Authority website: https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/covid-19-coronavirus-industry-guidance-and-updates/

Royal Ascot - Race Histories 1.15pm

The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap)

Today’s opener, a five-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, is among the six prizes to have been added to the Royal Ascot race programme for 2020 and is one of three new contests to be staged only this year. A five-furlong three-year-old handicap used to be run regularly on the Saturday Heath Day card and featured as part of the full Royal Ascot programme in 2002 and 2003 as The Balmoral Handicap. It was dropped in place of The Windsor Forest Stakes and the final running was won by Roger Charlton and Richard Hughes with Deportivo. Her Majesty The Queen has graciously consented to today’s temporary race name, which recognises the Monarchy’s official Scottish residence.

1.50pm

The Albany Stakes (Group 3)

First run in 2002 as The Henry Carnarvon Stakes in memory of Her Majesty The Queen’s late racing manager, The Albany Stakes proved so successful that it was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005. Restricted to two-year-old fillies, the six-furlong contest provides one of the season’s first opportunities for promising types to prove their ability and potentially go on to harbour Guineas aspirations. Owner Sir Robert Ogden and trainer Jeremy Noseda enjoyed two successive triumphs with La Chunga (2005) and Sander Camillo (2006), while Different League became the first French-trained winner of the race in 2017 for trainer Matthieu Palussiere.

2.25pm

The Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)

First run in 1843, the now five-furlong sprint was formerly known as The New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under four furlongs. In 1973, it was renamed after the Duke of Norfolk, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972, and became a Group 2 in 2006. Her Majesty The Queen’s colt Pall Mall won the 1957 renewal before landing the following year’s 2,000 Guineas. The 2001 winner Johannesburg progressed through the year unbeaten, securing four Group 1 victories including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. No Nay Never, saddled by American trainer Wesley Ward, set a new two-year-old record of 58.80s in 2013, while last year saw Frankie Dettori steer A’Ali to victory by just a neck. Normally run a day earlier, this is one of several juvenile races to have moved to later in the week in order to provide participants with as much of a break as possible following their debut run on the resumption of British racing earlier this month.

3.00pm

The Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)

Named after the 5th Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds between 1874 and 1879, the race was first run in 1879. It frequently attracts the best older middle-distance horses and often provides valuable clues ahead of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes here the following month. Five horses have won both races, including Her Majesty The Queen’s colt Aureole (1954) and most recently Harbinger (2010). Dartmouth delivered a 23rd Royal Ascot win for Her Majesty in 2016, while the 2018 winner (and dual King George runner-up) Crystal Ocean gave trainer Sir Michael Stoute an incredible 11th Hardwicke Stakes victory, the colt himself finally and deservedly making his Group 1 breakthrough in The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot the following season. Last year, Andrea Atzeni guided the likeable Defoe, fresh from his victory in The Coronation Cup at Epsom, to victory in a thrilling renewal.

3.35pm

The Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

The Commonwealth Cup was a new prize at Royal Ascot in 2015, joining The King’s Stand Stakes and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes to become the third Group 1 sprint of the week. The race, run over six furlongs, is restricted to three-year-olds and was put in place as part of a Europe-wide measure to create a better Pattern for young sprinters and improve the quality of sprint races across the continent. The 2016 heroine Quiet Reflection followed up with a win in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup later that summer while Caravaggio, victorious 12 months previously in The Coventry Stakes, became the first Irish-trained winner of the race the next year. The 2018 winner Eqtidaar carried Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s silks to victory in the race for the second time following the inaugural winner Muhaarar, who remained unbeaten for the rest of the campaign and ended 2015 as European Champion Sprinter. Last year saw the unstoppable Frankie Dettori ride his seventh winner of the meeting when landing the spoils on Advertise.

4.10pm

The Queen’s Vase (Group 2)

Usually run on the Wednesday, The Queen’s Vase was promoted to Group 2 status in 2017 and the race distance reduced by two furlongs to provide a more gradual step up in trip for three-year-old stayers. The race was named in honour of Queen Victoria and was inaugurated in 1838 after her accession to the throne. Her Majesty The Queen’s Estimate and current star stayer Stradivarius are the most recent Queen’s Vase winners (2012 and 2017 respectively) to win the historic Gold Cup in subsequent seasons. The late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed eight Queen’s Vase successes, while trainer Mark Johnston is close to equalling that record after seven wins.

4.40pm

The Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap)

The final race of the day was originally called The Bessborough Stakes after the 5th Earl of Bessborough - another Master of the Buckhounds - and was run as a five-furlong contest for two-year-olds from 1914. Now a middle-distance handicap for three-year-olds and above, the race was renamed in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s consort in 1999. The first winner under the race’s new name was Blueprint, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, ridden by top American jockey Gary Stevens and owned and bred by Her Majesty. Stoute, Royal Ascot’s winning-most trainer, has saddled the winner of the race on five other occasions, most recently with Arab Spring in 2014, while Richard Hughes enjoyed his 31st and final Royal Ascot victory as a jockey on Arab Dawn the following year.

“I’m excited about Zoustar but I’m even more excited about him now that I’ve seen his foals. We foaled 9 here and they are a cracking bunch. Scopey, muscled and with a good walk they should go down very well at the sales.” The Hon. Peter Stanley, New England Stud

“We have 4 Zoustar foals on the farm. They all have great presence, good movers and are good-looking foals. I think these Zoustar’s are what every breeder hopes for and when they see them they’re going to sell very well.” David Cox, Baroda Stud

“Our Zoustar colt has inherited his sire’s imposing physicality. Loads of bone and muscle with a great outlook. At 71kg birth weight this precocious fellow is exactly what we were hoping from the mating.” Dr Pat Sells, Chasemore Farm

A History Of Ascot Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. It all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’. That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters. In 1939, the first racing fixture staged separately from the Royal meeting took place at Ascot. 1951 saw the launch of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is staged every July and is one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the star-studded championship finale to the flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find what the next chapters hold.

ROYAL ASCOT AT HOME By Henry Birtles, The Racing Poet It may not be the same, from much we now refrain And though we long for normal times to come around again Our challenge is adapting to hold onto what we treasure Our norms, our fun, our everydays, The things that make us…US, our ways Our business and our pleasure It may not be the same, it will not be the same, But June is here, the skies are clear, it’s Racing ’s time again Royal Ascot goes ahead, for once behind closed doors It’s thumbs up time, our sport proceeds The champion Jockeys, Noble Steeds, Assembled for The Cause Positive’s the byword; looking forward, it’s unique It will not happen every year, this one-off Ascot Week It’s screen time, Twitter, Facebook, the old Telly, Insta, Zoom Remotely party with your friends Bring what you can, the odds and ends And decorate the room StyledWithThanks, the Hashtag, is a calling to our nation, To honour those who help us, through a form of celebration To tell them that we won’t forget, for them we must campaign We’ll stay indoors, tune in and cheer We’ll drink to now and pray next year, We’ll hit the track again But now is now and now is here, a virtual life existence Two metres is the guideline, our ordered social distance So let us find it in ourselves, tear up your normal plans Enjoy it all, as if we’re there, Glad rags and hats, good times to share As Royal Ascot Fans

Our thanks goes to Henry Birtles, The Racing Poet and HBA Media, who has written this poem specifically to celebrate this year’s unique Royal Meeting.

The Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2) - continued Race Summary: Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck took a step back in the right direction when chasing home Ghaiyyath in the Coronation Cup, with Defoe, who won this race and the Coronation Cup last year, well beaten. Hamish was impressive in winning twice over longer trips at York last year, Fanny Logan will be all the better for her return behind Manuela De Vega at Haydock, and Morando rounded off his season with a six-length win over course and distance in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes on soft ground. Preference is for ELARQAM, who looked ready for a try at this trip when rallying to run Lord North close at Haydock on his return. The Impact Of Coronavirus As a result of the unprecedented impact of the global coronavirus pandemic across the world in 2020, we are unable to welcome racegoers to join us for this year’s Royal Ascot. Following ongoing discussions with the UK government, racing will take place behind closed doors - with the safety of the public, staff and participating connections taking priority over everything else. We look forward to welcoming our racegoers to Royal Ascot 2021 but are pleased to be able to provide racing fans with the opportunity to watch the five-day meeting on television. Royal Ascot 2020 will go ahead across the five days originally planned, from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June inclusive. All of the historic events remain on a revised timetable, with the addition of an extra six races resulting in a total of 36 contests across the five days: seven on the first four days and eight on the final day. With racing only resuming in Great Britain on 1st June, the decision has been taken to make some changes from the traditional schedule. The St James’s Palace Stakes and The Coronation Stakes have been moved to the final day to maximise the amount of time between those races and The 2000 and 1000 Guineas, which took place on 6th and 7th June. Four of the six two-year-old races will take place on the Friday and the Saturday, providing this year’s juveniles with as much time as possible before contesting key races at Royal Ascot. All 36 races will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Racing and 30 will be shown live on ITV1. As well as being able to watch the action live, you can join us in celebrating Royal Ascot 2020 via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels and the official Ascot app.

CATEGORIES EXPLAINED... QIPCO British Champions Series showcases 35 of the UK’s finest Flat races, and last year included three of the world’s top five contests. The Series races are contested across five different categories – sprint; middle distance; long distance; fillies & mares and kicks off with the mile division and the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

SPRINT For horseracing’s speed merchants, the Sprint category comprises two races over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs and five races over 6 furlongs, including the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

MILE The Mile category kicks off with the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and is followed up by the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. The category culminates in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day. With prize money of £1.1 million, it is Europe’s richest mile race.

MIDDLE DISTANCE The Middle Distance division consists of a number of hugely valuable and iconic races run between 10 and 12 furlongs. Highlights from the seven-race series include the world-famous Investec Derby run at Epsom and Britain’s richest ten-furlong race, the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day.

LONG DISTANCE In the QIPCO British Champions Series Long Distance category come the stamina-sapping races for horses that can stay the trip - the “stayers”. The category features seven races in total across the calendar including the 2 1/4 mile Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.

FILLIES & MARES The very best fillies and mares battle it out to become queens of this division throughout the year, with seven Group 1 races run between 8 furlongs and 12 furlongs. This kicks off with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas in May and culminates in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes in October.

Wesley Ward drew a blank here last year for the first time since 2012, but he went close with Kimari in the Queen Mary and says he is “expecting big things” from the filly here. Jessica Harrington is adamant we can draw a line through the disappointing effort of Cheveley Park winner MILLISLE in the 1,000 Guineas, where she struggled on the course, and she will be a big player if this does not come too soon. Aidan O’Brien saddles Irish 2,000 Guineas third Lope Y Fernandez, for whom this comes even sooner. Clive Cox is sweet on Middle Park runner-up Golden Horde and he has less to prove than Mums Tipple, who has to put behind him two top-level disappointments, most recently over a mile, although there’s every chance he’s a sprinter so he can’t be dismissed. HHH Launched his career with two 7f wins, including Listed honours here on good to soft, before finishing close up in a pair of French Group 3s (1m/1m1f on good to soft and soft); it’s a little disconcerting to see him return in headgear and, while the dam is from the same Official BHA Rating 107 family as a St Leger winner, he is half-brother to a 6f-1m winner; therefore not certain to stay.

Charlie Appleby’s Al Dabaran, who was placed twice in Group races at two, looks a danger, while Born With Pride, a smart winner of a Listed fillies’ race at Newmarket as a juvenile, was slowly into her stride in the Kempton Classic Trial and can be given a second chance. Racing Notices Position Of Stalls Straight Course - Centre Round Course - Inside Form Guide And Rating Under each horse the form is given, followed by a star rating and its official BHA Rating. The form guides and star ratings are compiled by the Racing Post. Horse Welfare At every race meeting at Ascot there are four specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses racing on these days. During each race, vets follow the horses by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is now standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
