t is so exciting to have a full-scale Royal Ascot in operation for the first time since 2019 – even more so in this very special Platinum Jubilee year. The five days of Royal Ascot 2022 will be a fabulous display of elite Thoroughbred racing as we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s extraordinary achievement. We all hope that another winner in the Royal colours will be added to The Queen’s current tally of 24 winners at the Royal Meeting since 1952.

All of the racecourse enclosures are open again and we are thrilled to be welcoming back everyone who wishes to attend, following a year behind closed doors and then a year with restricted crowds in 2021. We have made some reductions to the capacities across the three main enclosures this year, ensuring that all of our guests will be able to enjoy a little bit more space. Of course, much has changed throughout the last couple of years,

and on the track the emergence of Hollie Doyle, Cieren Fallon and Marco Ghiani represents a talented new generation of jockeys. Much remains familiar though, and I am sure that many of you will be hoping that Frankie Dettori can add to his already astonishing tally of 76 Royal Ascot winners throughout the week. Ever the showman, at the age of 51 he remains at the top of his game, and who would bet against him eventually getting close to Lester Piggott’s all-time record of 116 winners at the Royal Meeting. We are hugely grateful to QIPCO, Longines and Howden, our three Official Partners, as well as to all our Official Sponsors and Suppliers. This year we welcome Peroni Italia for the first time as the Official Beer of Ascot Racecourse. We also welcome Slingsby as our Official Gin Supplier. We are committed to playing our part in ensuring British racing maintains its position as a worldleading industry. In 2022, we are providing record prize money of £8.65 million across the 35 races – an increase of 18% on 2019 values. Two of the feature events, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday and the renamed Platinum Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, become the first £1 million races at Royal Ascot. Our eight Group 1 races and a total of 19 Pattern or Listed level contests

attract the greatest concentration of equine talent at a single race meeting anywhere in the world. This year we are expecting competitors from Japan, America, Australia, Ireland, France and Germany, all aiming to take on the leading British hopes. Each of the five days of Royal Ascot are World Pool events, meaning that people betting into the pool benefit from increased liquidity and better value. Hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with whom we launched the venture in 2019, many countries around the world are expected to bet into the Ascot pool. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the globe and it will be particularly enjoyable for many friends in the racing world to see each other for the first time in three years. We hope that the millions watching on ITV, Sky Sports Racing, NBC in the USA and Green Channel Japan, as well as many other global networks, enjoy it just as much as those of us lucky enough to be present. I hope that you have a wonderful week. Yours sincerely

ew sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution, with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
It was Queen Anne who, in 1711, first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. 6

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters – rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern-day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes. THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost 50 years. In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that the Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals. 8
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today,

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006, and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat-racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later.

In 2012, Ascot Racecourse was at the very heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it has been the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being two notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled an impressive 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions, including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and – more recently – the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. #RoyalAscot

Lester Piggott Lester Piggott passed away in May this year at the age of 86. In Ascot’s three-hundred-plus-year history no jockey has dominated the Royal Meeting like him. His tally of 116 Royal Ascot winners stands alone in the modern era, a total that is unlikely to be surpassed and one that came at a time when the meeting was just four days long. 10

P
iggott’s first Royal Ascot victory came in 1952 on Malka’s Boy for trainer Walter Nightingall in the Wokingham Stakes. ‘The Long Fellow’ went on to be associated with some of the greatest horses to have graced Royal Ascot.
He won the Gold Cup a record 11 times, including a then-record threetimes on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977, one on board Le Moss and a brace with Ardross in 1981 and 1982. In modern history, he also remains the most successful jockey in the King’s Stand Stakes, Royal Hunt Cup, Norfolk Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork and Orrery Stakes). His seven winners in the King’s Stand Stakes included three for Vincent O’Brien in the 1970s as well as one of the leading post-war sprinters, Right Boy, in 1957 who he subsequently partnered to victory in the 1958 and 1959 Cork and Orrery Stakes. Of those 116 winners, he rode 18 apiece for trainers Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. Twice he rode eight winners at a single meeting, in 1965 and 1975. Success at Royal Ascot wasn’t limited to the saddle either as when he briefly turned his hand to training in the mid1980s he sent out Cutting Blade to win the Coventry Stakes in 1986. After famously returning to the saddle, his final winner at the Royal Meeting was College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes, at the age of 57.

Piggott went on to enjoy success as a breeder being the joint ownerbreeder of Superstar Leo who won the Norfolk Stakes in 2000. He also part-owned Mont Etoile, trained by his son-in-law William Haggas, who won the Ribblesdale Stakes in 2006. He is therefore the only known person to have ridden, trained, owned and bred a winner at Royal Ascot. A statue of Lester Piggott sculpted by William Newton was unveiled at Ascot Racecourse in 2019 and stands on the Brigadier Gerard Lawn. Speaking during the unveiling, Piggott said, “I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looked forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on 11 occasions. "I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me." ROYAL ASCOT HIGHLIGHTS • Total Royal Ascot winners - 116 • First Royal Ascot winner – Malka’s Boy in the 1952 Wokingham Stakes • Last Royal Ascot winner – College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes • Gold Cup wins – 11 including three on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977 • Eight winners in a single Royal Ascot twice in 1965 and 1975

Julian Muscat looks at Aidan O’Brien’s stellar record in the feature race today…
he saying holds that you should always start as you mean to go on. As much is certainly true of Royal Ascot, where the first three races on the opening day are designated championship races.
For starters it’s the Queen Anne Stakes, a race named after the monarch who established Ascot Racecourse more than 300 years ago. Next up is the King’s Stand Stakes for the fastest sprinters in the world. And the third race, and thus the Tuesday feature race, is the St James’s Palace Stakes, a Group 1 contest for three-year-old colts over one mile on the Round Course. It's a kingmaker’s race, since it frequently attracts horses that won or ran well in the 2,000 Guineas races of Britain, Ireland and France. These 2,000 Guineas races are known as Classics; their purpose is to identify the best three-year-old milers in their respective countries. 12
The St James’s Palace Stakes is the stage where these milers do battle, in the process determining which of them is the best in Europe. It has been won by a litany of champions, among them Brigadier Gerard, Kris, Kingman and Frankel, yet one trainer has dominated the race since he saddled the first of his record eight winners at the dawn of the new millennium. Step forward Aidan O’Brien, the man charged with turning molten liquid into hard gold for the Coolmore partners. O’Brien trains at the storied Ballydoyle Stables in Tipperary, Ireland, not far from Coolmore Stud, which has been the dominant force in the breeding world for the last three decades. O’Brien had big shoes to fill when he arrived at Ballydoyle, the stable owned by Coolmore proprietor John Magnier, in 1996. Ballydoyle was built in the 1950s by the legendary Vincent O’Brien (no relation to Aidan), who had no peer

among trainers in Europe. He saddled two winners of the St James’s Palace Stakes: Thatch in 1973 and Jaazeiro five years later, although the race, a Group 2 contest back then, was never really on his radar. The St James’s Palace Stakes was promoted to Group 1 status in 1988, since when, no trainer has come close to matching Aidan O’Brien’s eight winners. Only the late Sir Henry Cecil and John Gosden have managed three apiece, which serves to illustrate the magnitude of O’Brien’s achievement. O’Brien’s role within the most powerful racing and breeding operation in Europe is to transform the raw talent bred by Coolmore into champion racehorses. These horses then retire to Coolmore Stud when their racing days are over to join the breeding herd, in the process bequeathing the next generation of champions. This virtuous circle relies on O’Brien training Coolmore’s bluebloods to plunder races of the calibre of the St James’s Palace Stakes. None better fits that description than O’Brien’s first winner, Giant’s Causeway. His father was the US Champion sire, Storm Cat, while his mother, Mariah’s Storm, rebounded from a career-threatening injury to win 10 races in all, many of them significant. So inspiring was Mariah’s the Royal Ascot Insider

Storm’s story that it prompted the making of a motion picture, Dreamer, which was based on her exploits.
As for Giant’s Causeway, his own St James’s Palace Stakes triumph was pivotal in that he’d finished runner-up in both the English 2,000 Guineas and its Irish equivalent. He needed to make a definitive statement on his merit, after which he never looked back. He went on to win four more championship races with a determination so rugged that he was dubbed “The Iron Horse” after the eponymous steam locomotives of the early 1800s.
Mariah’s Storm raced for American owners in Bill and Margie Peters, who offered her for sale at public auction in 1996 at the end of her racing days. Magnier and his Coolmore partners stepped in with a weighty winning bid of $2.6 million – after which Mariah’s Storm proved herself to be one of the biggest bargains of all time. Giant’s Causeway was her first foal; her fifth was Giant’s Causeway’s full-sister You’resothrilling, runnerup in Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary Stakes before she, in turn, produced Gleneagles, winner of the St James’s Palace Stakes for O’Brien’s stable in 2015. This is a classic example of the cream rising to the top at Royal Ascot.
Giant’s Causeway’s career at stud matched his deeds on the racecourse. He spent much of it in the US, where he was Champion Sire three times in four years from 2009. Among the champions he sired was Shamardal, himself winner of the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2005.
There are 36 Group 1 races run in Britain each year. These races attract the finest racehorses, yet some are more equal than others. A small handful are known within the racing and breeding industry as “stallion-making races” for their propensity to throw up influential stallions of the future. The St James’s Palace Stakes is among them. Its winners are much sought after for breeding purposes and are worth a king’s ransom. The race has certainly come a long way since it was inaugurated in 1834, when that year’s Derby winner, Plenipotentiary, gained a walk-over after his sole intended 16
After Giant’s Causeway, O’Brien saddled the winner of the following year’s St James’s Palace Stakes in Black Minnaloushe, who’d won the Irish 2,000 Guineas. And O’Brien completed the hat-trick in 2002 with Rock Of Gibraltar, who’d previously won both the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas. The Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was a partner in Rock Of Gibraltar, whose winning sequence of six successive Group 1 races saw him anointed as Europe’s Horse of the Year in 2002. Having drawn a St James’s Palace Stakes blank for the next four years, O’Brien resumed the winning thread

with another hat-trick in successive years from 2007. He opened that sequence with Excellent Art, who’d finished fourth in the French 2,000 Guineas. Then came another Coolmore blue-blood in Henrythenavigator, who arrived at Royal Ascot having won both English and Irish 2,000 Guineas. And he was followed in 2009 by Mastercraftsman, the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner who hoisted O’Brien’s sixth victory in the St James’s Palace Stakes. O’Brien’s seventh winner, Gleneagles, was in the mould of Rock Of Gibraltar and Henrythenavigator in that he arrived at Royal Ascot having won the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2015. But O’Brien’s most recent winner, Circus Maximus in 2019, came from out of the blue. Circus Maximus ran in the St James’s Palace Stakes just over two weeks after he’d finished sixth in the Derby over a mile and a half. Dropping Circus Maximus back to one mile didn’t remotely faze the colt, who fought like a lion to claim the prize.
horses, which demonstrates just how keen he is to win it. There will be other O’Brien-trained winners in the years ahead, although no future renewal will surely match the trainer’s unique achievement in 2007. When Excellent Art triumphed in that year he led home Duke Of Marmalade and Astronomer Royal – both of which were also trained by O’Brien. Call it a full house.
Over and above O’Brien’s eight winners, the importance of the St James’s Palace Stakes to the Coolmore partners is evident in another statistic. Since he opened his account in 2000 O’Brien has had at least one runner in every subsequent renewal. Over that 22-year stretch he has saddled up 52 the Royal Ascot Insider

Wide shot of the Royal Procession arriving in the Parade Ring, 19th June 2013 By far the most prestigious event in the racing calendar is Royal Ascot. This event, a staple in the royal diary for more than two centuries, is the working highlight of the summer season for a royal photographer. The story of Ascot began when Queen Anne, a keen equestrian, spotted a perfect clearing for horse racing in the forest near Windsor Castle and promptly bought it for £558. George IV initiated the first Royal Procession on the track in 1825 and the tradition has continued ever since. The Queen, accompanied by members of the royal family, traditionally arrives into the Parade Ring in the famous carriage procession that begins in the grounds of Windsor Castle,

heads down the Long Walk and meets up with the waiting carriages in Windsor Great Park. As the procession travels down the racetrack in front of the Grandstand, designed by renowned architect Rod Sheard, a tsunami of cheers begins as the carriage then emerges into the Parade Ring. Racegoers in top hats and women dressed to the nines all crane to get a glimpse of what colour hat The Queen is wearing that day. Whilst this is an event that celebrates fashion and all things British, it is of course the foremost horse racing spectacular in the world, with The Queen taking a central role as well as being a passionate participant in this historic event.

The Queen matching Ryan Moore’s colours, 15th June 2016 2016 was not to be The Queen’s year in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, after her historic win with Estimate in 2013. However, she looked incredibly jovial as she handed the trophy to the same jockey who rode her horse to victory those three years before, Ryan Moore. What stood out for many observing was the fact that The Queen and the jockey were wearing matching colours; a lovely touch that clearly made them both smile.
The Queen reflected in the Gold Cup, 19th June 2014 This particular year I was looking for a more unusual take on the trophy presentations. As I prepared to document the handover of the Gold Cup in 2014, I noticed the monarch reflected in the highly polished trophy as the preparations were taking place to make the presentations to winning connections. Using a long lens, I was able to compress the distance and capture The Queen smiling in the reflective gold surface; a slightly different take on the normal handshake.
The Queen in the rain, 15th June 2005 I’ve photographed Royal Ascot for many years, and whilst we are often blessed with the most glorious summer weather, inevitably there is the occasional ‘wash out’ – as was the case on this day in 2005, the year that Royal Ascot took place at York Racecourse during the redevelopment of Ascot. The show must go on, however, and for a photographer days like this often make for fantastic photographs as racegoers in all their finery attempt to find shelter or dodge an unexpected downpour. Of course, Her Majesty The Queen has always taken this kind of thing in her stride and can often be seen arriving into the Parade Ring in a carriage holding a transparent umbrella trimmed to reflect her outfit of the day.

The Queen winning the Gold Cup, 20th June 2013 It was 2013 – Thursday 20th June to be precise – and there was a real buzz around the Parade Ring ahead of the Gold Cup, the most coveted event of the week’s racing. Never had a reigning monarch in the race’s 207-year history triumphed in this highlight of the week. The Queen’s horse, Estimate, an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, was the 7/2 favourite for the Gold Cup. Many of the spectators couldn’t believe it as the filly battled all the way to the finishing line in this, just the seventh race of her career. The roar of the crowd must have been ringing in the ears of jockey Ryan Moore as the horse powered him down the famous final straight. Estimate crossed the finish line to riotous cheering from normally restrained crowds. Everyone knew how much this would mean to the monarch, someone so passionate about racing. I soaked up the heady atmosphere and cheers in the Parade Ring before capturing this image of The Queen being presented with the trophy. Seeing her eyes light up with joy was certainly one of the most enduring royal moments of the year for me.

uring the redevelopment between 2004-2006, a safer race track was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossing over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create a new enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses. The Flat course pop-up irrigation system underwent a £150,000 overhaul in 2017. All 300 of the pop ups around the track were replaced and a new filter system fitted to the pump station delivering a more efficient watering system. Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys. There are three equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-ray machine to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy. There are six doctors on site specifically to deal with any jockey injuries.

With 28 Royal Ascot wins already under his belt, William Buick has his eyes on the prizes at this year’s Royal Meeting. Here, he reflects on the highlights of his career so far, in conversation with Mark Robinson
A
t 33 years old, William Buick is entering the phase of his career that most jockeys would consider to be their peak. The thought that his best years may still be ahead of him is one that requires a double take. Buick’s résumé is already packed with a hugely impressive list of achievements that have established him as one of the world’s top riders over the past decade or so.
With multiple wins at Royal Ascot (including three in 2021), two victories in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a Derby winner and several more Group 1 successes across the globe, it seems like he’s been around for a lot longer than his age and youthful looks suggest. The reality is that he has. As a teenage apprentice jockey, Buick was hailed as one of the most prodigious talents to emerge in the UK for many years. And amazingly it is now 15 years since his arrival on the big stage by partnering Dark Missile to victory in the 2007 Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot – quite the achievement for a rider still a few weeks shy of his 19th birthday. “I had never been to Royal Ascot until I rode there,” Buick says. “My first trip to the racecourse was when I went to watch the 2002 King George with my dad, when Golan beat Nayef. I remember that day clearly and the place definitely left an the Royal Ascot Insider
impression on me. Going to such a huge event at such a famous venue was really exciting for a young racing fan. “But my first time at the Royal Meeting was when I rode there in 2007. It was an incredible experience, and winning the race on such an iconic stage as a teenager was unbelievable,” he continues. “Dark Missile’s trainer, Andrew Balding, and the owner, Jeff Smith, showed a lot of faith in me, as the filly went into the race with a real chance. For them to trust such a young rider in a race like that – a sprint, with a big field of runners – was such a confidence boost for me.” It was the first big race win of Buick’s career. Many more have followed since

that day, in different countries and on various continents, but the thrill of winning a race at Royal Ascot as a teenager remains fresh in his mind. It’s a memory that hasn’t faded despite all the successes that have followed. 30
“People talk about it, but you don’t quite realise just how special winning at Royal Ascot is until you experience it for yourself,” he says. “It’s an amazing place and probably the most important five days of racing that we have. It’s our #RoyalAscot

After that headline-grabbing first Royal Ascot winner in 2007, Buick had to wait four years for his second – but his patience was rewarded in spades. By then established as the number one rider for all-powerful trainer John #RoyalAscot

Gosden, the partnership tasted Royal Ascot glory together for the first time when Nathaniel won the King Edward VII Stakes at the meeting in 2011. In beating future Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente by five lengths, Nathaniel announced his arrival on the big stage. “It was really exciting because we thought the horse had lots of potential. He proved it that day and then he went on to win two Group 1s and to be placed in a few more,” Buick enthuses. Indeed, just a few weeks later, again ridden by Buick, Nathaniel returned to Ascot to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. “Ascot has been quite a lucky place for me – I’ve ridden some fantastic horses and won some of the biggest races there,” he reflects. “Nathaniel was a Royal Ascot winner for me and a King George winner for me too at Ascot. You can argue that he was unlucky not to win 32
the King George twice. We won it in 2011, and in 2012 we were beaten narrowly by the German filly Danedream.” Twelve months on from Nathaniel’s Royal Ascot win in 2011, Buick enjoyed one of the best weeks of his career by riding five winners at the 2012 meeting – including a memorable three in one afternoon on day four, the highlight of which was Fallen For You’s victory in the Coronation Stakes. That success was one of the nine Group 1 wins for Buick in the 2012 season. “2012 at Royal Ascot was just one of those great weeks, which come around very rarely,” he says. “I knew going into the meeting that I had some good rides, and every year you hope to have a winner at Royal Ascot – but you never think you will have five of them! It was like a dream to ride five winners, including the three on the fourth day. It’s so hard to win any race there because the quality

of the opposition is so strong.” At the end of 2014, Buick embarked on a new chapter in his career by signing for Godolphin, becoming one of the main jockeys for one of the most successful and high-profile racing operations in the world. Just a few months into his new job, Buick rewarded his new employers’ faith by winning the 2015 Dubai World Cup. A catalogue of big prizes have followed, including at Royal Ascot, where Buick’s career total at the meeting now stands at 28 wins – the third-most among all active jockeys. Only Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore are ahead of him. Working for Andrew Balding, John Gosden and Godolphin has given Buick an insight into what Royal Ascot means for some of the biggest trainers and owners of his era, and how the early part of every Flat season is geared up to preparing the best horses for one of the most prestigious and iconic race meetings in the world.
don’t want to go there and miss a chance to win. Every day in the month before Royal Ascot is crucial. The whole team is always thinking long and hard about the plans for it, wherever they may be. It means so much to everyone involved.” So, as Buick looks ahead to this year’s Royal Ascot, and hopefully many more to come over the next few years, what are the races missing from that glittering résumé that he’d most like to win? “The St James’s Palace Stakes is one that I haven’t won and it’s definitely high on my list,” he replies. “I’ve come close to winning it a couple of times and it’s always a high-quality race with some of the best three-year-old milers lining up. “And of course, I’d love to win the Gold Cup – any jockey would. With its history and tradition, it’s the Royal Ascot race.”
“Every year at the start of the season you have your older horses that return, and the trainer will decide the pecking order and work out which races at Royal Ascot might suit them,” he says. “Then you start to pick out your two-year-olds if you have some good ones that might be ready early enough to run in some of those historic juvenile races at Royal Ascot. “It’s a very intense period for trainers as they try to find the right races at Royal Ascot for the right horses. It’s such an important event for everyone, and you the Royal Ascot Insider

It is with the greatest sense of anticipation that we return to Royal Ascot to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the special relationship that our sport enjoys with the Royal Family.
I
t remains a huge privilege that QIPCO is Royal Ascot’s first-ever commercial partner and we have formed close ties with the racecourse over the past decade, with a shared passion for the sport and our continued investment in its future.
It is due to the heritage and prestige of British Flat racing that we base Qatar Racing here and our breeding operation continues to develop from strength to strength. This year could not be more exciting for us as we welcome the first foals by our QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner Kameko at Tweenhills, and watch the first runners by Roaring Lion, Zoustar (in Europe) and Lightning Spear. It is the culmination of years of work and the development of our racing legacy. This week we have much to look forward to with an incredible array of domestic and international racing stars. I wish all connections the very best of luck in this amazing sporting amphitheatre on this, the greatest turf on Earth. H
aving won several consecutive top races in northern England, the celebrated British Thoroughbred Beeswing crowned her racing career by heading south to win the Ascot Gold Cup in 1842. One hundred and eighty years on, Tom Barnes, the young executive chef at the three-Michelin-star restaurant L’Enclume in Cumbria, his native region, faces a similar, albeit culinary, task; in June, Barnes will travel south to make his first solo appearance at Royal Ascot, in The Old Press Room, a new restaurant located in the Grandstand next to the racecourse’s finish line.
The ‘Beeswing 1842’, a dish of Crozier Blue cheese made from sheep’s milk, pears cooked in beeswax, preserved figs and elderflower, is just one of Barnes’s tasting menu dishes for Royal Ascot. Further dishes named after winning horses at the famous racecourse include ‘Bird of Freedom 1887’, which is a savoury doughnut of wood pigeon, and ‘Jerusalem & Ragstone 1970s’, where the English goat’s cheese ‘Ragstone’ (also the name of a victorious Ascot horse) is served with confit Jerusalem artichoke and stout vinegar and malt – a dish created partly in homage to the hymn Jerusalem, played at Royal Ascot each year. His menu has been planned in consultation with the acclaimed chef and owner of L’Enclume, Simon Rogan, who this year will be cooking at the the Royal Ascot Insider
Queen Anne Enclosure’s flagship finedining restaurant, ON5. Ahead of this Royal Ascot challenge, a confident, calm and down-to-earth Barnes, a Roux scholar who appeared on the Great British Menu television show twice in 2020, says his “energy levels are off the charts”, reflecting the excitement and enthusiasm in the Rogan team. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the end of Covid restrictions and the subsequent return of greater numbers of spectators mean there is much to celebrate this year at Royal Ascot, hence the timely nature of The Old Press Room restaurant launch. This is especially the case for Simon Rogan’s team of 20 chefs, as well as Sam Ward, the Managing Director of the wider Umbel Group of restaurants, who has overseen the commercial growth of Rogan’s seven eateries, located in the Lake District, London and Hong Kong.
THE PATH TO STARDOM Known for its exquisite seasonal, contemporary and colourful dishes, L’Enclume restaurant, which is celebrating its 20th birthday this year, was awarded three Michelin stars in February. Commenting on the award, the Michelin Guide said: “There is now quite an extraordinary level of finesse in every dish. Flavours linger long in the memory. The kitchen is practiced and #RoyalAscot

focused. Techniques are clever, and combinations inventive and original. But however clever the construction, nothing gets in the way of allowing the ingredients to shine.” Meanwhile, the Umbel Group says it has doubled revenues since the start of the Covid pandemic, proving its commercial resilience – a feat largely achieved thanks to the successful development of a delivery service, ‘Home by Simon Rogan’, during lockdown, which is now managed by nine employees.
Ward says the company, which now has 180 staff in Britain and 50 in Hong Kong, is learning how to manage growth; earning three Michelin stars has helped to generate more private dining events away from the restaurants.
The Umbel Group sold ready meals for £5, which cost £2.50 to make; each sale allowed the company to fund meals for local people in need. Commercial deliveries have evolved into three-course meals, popular with young parents and customers who live alone.
38
Having overcome the challenges of the pandemic, Ward is now faced with soaring costs and post-Brexit staffing issues. Yet this has not affected the company’s ambitions; it says it is poised to open further restaurants and bars in 2022. Rogan, who once sold his car in order to help fund L’Enclume, knows a

thing or two about resilience, and the strong bond established between him, Barnes and Ward reflects the group’s confidence. The trio, showing their jocular nature, call themselves the ‘Three Stooges’. “We were at each other’s throats at first, but we are very close,” Ward says, partly tongue-in-cheek. Ward recalls how he was first offered an interview at L’Enclume straight after dining there in 2008. He’d previously worked in a bar, and Rogan offered him a job as bar manager; since then, Ward has gone on to lead the company’s commercial expansion. Meanwhile, Barnes, who worked for Rogan for six years, left to complete a culinary stint in 2017 as chef de partie at Geranium, a three-Michelin-star restaurant in Copenhagen, before returning to Rogan’s L’Enclume and his native Cumbria in 2018. Rogan believes the pandemic helped L’Enclume to obtain three Michelin stars. It meant that he spent his time focused on the restaurants in Cumbria, rather than regularly travelling during the company’s international expansion phases.
GREEN CREDENTIALS If Rogan’s seasonal dishes are richly layered with flavours, it is largely due to the ingredients, most of which are sourced from L’Enclume’s own 12acre organic farm. Located just down the Royal Ascot Insider

Regenerative farming and a commitment to zero waste, including composting through the use of nine Ridan food waste recycling composters, has helped L’Enclume and the Roganic restaurant in Hong Kong earn Michelin Green stars in 2021. “Having the Green stars makes us consider how we can improve,” explains #RoyalAscot
39

It is very much a case of ‘less is more’,” Rogan says. Experimental food such as egg noodles injected with hot and sour soup is long gone from menus, with the process now focused on the ingredients rather than the method. Raw materials are taken to Rogan’s development kitchen Aulis, located next door to L’Enclume, where dishes are created and tested. “Innovation is still there, but it’s deceptively simple,” says Rogan. Now, his cuisine is all about layering flavours, taking the raw material discreetly to the next level to give it a new dimension. “In your younger days, you can try to do too much and over-complicate, but then you grow up and settle into your own style. The main principle is now flavour. Flavour is key to our thinking,” he explains.
Ward. It is not an end in itself, but rather helps them ask questions about what they are doing right, and what needs improving. Having a third Michelin star for L’Enclume and two Michelin Green stars highlights not only how the Umbel Group of restaurants has full control over most of the raw materials it uses for ingredients, but also the evolution of Rogan’s style of cuisine. “As we’ve got better at growing our own raw materials, we’ve become more sympathetic to each ingredient. 40
At Royal Ascot, Rogan will cook starters including truffle dumplings in fermented celeriac, toasted yeast and Ramson biscuit, Cornish crab, and roast chicken crackling. Mains include Belted Galloway beef served with stuffed courgettes, English seasonal mushrooms, ragout of ox cheek with artichoke, and dry-aged west coast turbot, razor clams and buttered radishes, salt-baked kohlrabi and elderflower.

BRITISH BY NATURE The use of fermenting, drying, clamping and pickling techniques reflects Rogan’s shift towards traditional British methods of preserving ingredients. Rogan says his cuisine is British, in the broad sense, taking on influences from around the world. As with all top chefs, Rogan first learnt French cooking techniques, before gradually evolving his style of cuisine away from French influence. “When I started training, I needed that solid grounding in classical French cuisine, as it’s the basis of everything
[culinary],” he says. But now, he points out, “there is nothing French about our cuisine. It is as British or Cumbrian as you could get.” Had Rogan known, 20 years ago, how his cuisine would evolve, he says he would not have called the restaurant L’Enclume. French for ‘anvil’, the name embraces the blacksmithing heritage of the 13th-century building that houses the restaurant. Rogan will be serving an à la carte menu at Royal Ascot, rather than the menu of 15 to 16 small dishes served at L’Enclume. Yet the same culinary style and ethos as regards ingredients will be on show. While Barnes will be serving 40 covers at lunch each day, Rogan will serve 192 covers for his à la carte lunch and afternoon tea; that’s more than three times the usual number of covers at L’Enclume. A challenge indeed, but one that Rogan is used to; this year marks his fourth culinary stint at Royal Ascot. THE R OA MEETS
Kennet Valley alley Thoroughbreds As the voice of Owners, the ROA are consistently promoting the impact and benefits of ownership whilst working to make ownership more rewarding.
O
nce again we will be hailing our popular “ROA Owner of the Day” for Royal Ascot, which showcases an owner with a runner at the meeting. Today’s (Tuesday 14 June) ROA Owner of the Day is Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds, who own Sir Busker, a runner in the opening Queen Anne Stakes (2.30pm). Baaeed will be the banker of Royal Ascot week for many, but an even bigger certainty is that the owners of one of his rivals in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, Sir Busker, will have a memorable day whatever the result. Not that the William Knight trained six-year-old can be dismissed lightly, having won the Royal Hunt Cup and finished third behind Palace Pier in
42
last year’s Queen Anne on his only two previous appearances at the meeting. Owners Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds are one of, if not the, longest-established syndicates in Britain, their blue, red and white silks having been carried to around 200 winners from the late 1980s - though William Buick on Sir Busker will be wearing not the regular white cap but blue and yellow, as syndicates fundraise and show support for Ukraine on the biggest Flat racing platform on the planet. Looking back and forwards, KVT’s Piers Winkworth says: “Myself, Sam Hoskins and Luke Lillingston bought Kennet Valley about ten years ago off Nick Robinson, and Nick always professed to be the original syndicator in the UK. #RoyalAscot
the Royal Ascot Insider
“Henry Ponsonby and Thurloe were just behind, and Harry Herbert used to work for Kennet Valley before he set up Highclere. So we are as long-standing as any syndicate, if not the original one. “We have 16 people in a horse. The bigger horses on the bigger days, you get more people coming, and we do lots of stable visits too which have been really well attended. People are out and about now having been cooped up for so long due to Covid-19. “We’ll have a big turnout on Tuesday, especially with people’s other halves, I imagine we will be about 25 or 30 strong on the day. “We’re sponsored now by a company called Oakman Inns, and they’ve got a number of pubs, one of which is the Royal Foresters, near Ascot Racecourse. There’s a private room that we use as our clubhouse and we can go there before each day of the meeting for brunch. With Sir Busker in the first race, I imagine plenty of people will be getting in the spirit of it quite early on!” KVT have a noble history of success, with Group 2, 3 and Listed wins alongside big handicap strikes such as Magical Memory’s Stewards’ Cup victory in 2015. A Group 1 has eluded them but they have knocked on the door and in Sir Busker probably have as good a chance of picking up any pieces left behind by Baaeed as any other runner. Winkworth, who has a safari business - hence the first name of a few horses the Royal Ascot Insider
who were trained by dad Peter, now retired - continues: “We’ve got 15 horses at the moment and they are all onehorse syndicates. Some of our people are in every horse and some are just in one, so we’ve probably got about 120130 individuals across the board. “It’s great for the smaller owner to get involved at big meetings, and Royal Ascot is the one everyone wants to have a runner and a winner at. “It’s a Group 1, it’s a huge race and Baaeed is already a superstar, so we’re under no illusions. Are we going to be the outsider? Probably yes. Are our odds worth having a fiver or tenner each-way on? I think they certainly are.
“He loves Ascot, the ground should be spot-on for him, and William Knight and his team have done a great job. He’s there to try to pick up as much of the generous prizemoney as possible.” “He had a good start to the year, he had three runs in Dubai and really got his act together, finishing fifth - when he could have been fourth - in an incredibly hot Group 1 [Dubai Turf] on World Cup night. “He’s come back here to be second at Ascot in the Paradise, and he ran a good race in the Lockinge to be fifth, coming from a long way back. He’s a hold-up horse and is difficult to win with because of his running style. #RoyalAscot
43
“If the Queen Anne is a crawl and a sprint we’re probably done for, but if it’s a truly-run race I’d like to think we’ve as good a chance as any of them to come second, third or fourth to Baaeed. I think the market is a little unfair on him. He’s not a win bet but he’s in great nick after a month off following the Lockinge. “He loves Ascot, the ground should be spot-on for him, and William Knight and his team have done a great job. He’s there to try to pick up as much of the generous prize-money as possible.” So too, giving KVT an exciting second string to their Royal Ascot bow and something to look forward to later in the week, will be Dance Fever, a five-year-old trained by Clive Cox. “The plan on the day of our other runner, Dance Fever, is to have a picnic in the car park,” says Winkworth. “He will run in the Buckingham Palace, which is the last race on the Thursday. “Clive has done a really good job with him. He’s rated 95 and hasn’t won for a while, but he likes Ascot and ran well to be third, beaten only half a length, in the International Handicap last July. “We probably messed him around a bit on the all-weather earlier this year, which he didn’t like. He ran reasonably well at the Guineas meeting at Newmarket in April, then in the Victoria Cup at Ascot last time, it was a funny race, we were drawn low and he finished in a heap with others drawn on the same side. We finished close to Dark Shift, who was drawn next to us, won next time and is favourite for the Hunt Cup as we speak. “He needs quick ground, which we should get, he goes there in good form and if he gets a nice draw, with pace around him, hopefully he’s got an each-way chance.” 44

RACE HISTORIES
Tuesday The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1)
One mile (Straight Mile course), Four Year Olds & Upwards Founded in 1840, the Queen Anne Stakes commemorates the monarch who established racing at Ascot in 1711. Run as the Trial Stakes until 1929, the Queen Anne Stakes was first awarded Group 3 status in 1971, becoming Group 2 in 1984. The race, attracting Europe’s top older milers, achieved the highest three-year average rating of any Group 2 race in Britain from 1999 to 2002 according to the then International Classifications and was elevated to Group 1 status accordingly in 2003. Run as the opening race of the week since 2008 it will once again get the Royal Meeting underway this year.
The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
Six furlongs, Two Year Olds First run in 1890, the race was named after the ninth Earl of Coventry, Master of the Buckhounds between 1886 and 1892. This is traditionally the first Group contest of the year for juveniles and as a result attracts some of the very best precocious young horses, forming part of the high-class opening day card. Many top quality horses to have won this race before going on to achieve greatness including Canford Cliffs, Dawn Approach and Caravaggio since the race was promoted to Group 2 status in 2004.
The King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1)
Five furlongs, Three Year Olds & Upwards A Stand Plate was first run on the round course in 1837, becoming the Royal Stand Plate in 1858. The race was re-named the Queen’s Stand Plate in 1860 for two-yearolds, over the sprint distance of four furlongs, finally becoming the King’s Stand Plate in 1901. Today the race remains a sprint, although now run over the minimum trip of five furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards. In 2008 it was promoted to Group 1. The 2019 renewal was officially the highest-quality sprint race in the world with a rating of 120.25 after Blue Point and Battaash fought out the finish.

The St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1)
One mile (Old Mile course), Three Year Old Colts Named after the Tudor Royal residence, the inaugural running of the St James’s Palace Stakes in 1834 was a walkover for the Derby winner Plenipotentiary. This race features the best male milers from the Classic generation, often attracting horses that have run in the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. Frankel, Kingman and Circus Maximus are recent superstars to have won the race while the 2020 renewal was particularly memorable, producing the race of the week as Palace Pier defeated Pinatubo and Wichita in a thrilling finish.
The Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
Two miles, four furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards First run in 1839, the Ascot Stakes is run over two-and-a-half miles. Like the Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, this race provides a thorough test of stamina. It is one of just four races at the Royal Meeting in which the field passes the winning post twice. As well as attracting some high-class horses from the Jumps sphere, the race normally features horses that will go on to run in the major staying handicaps throughout the season including the Northumberland Plate and the Ebor.
The Wolferton Stakes (Listed)
One mile, two furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards First run in 2002 as part of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, this is a Listed race over 10 furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards, having been a Listed Handicap until 2017.
The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)
One mile, six furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards Staged over a mile and three quarters, the Copper Horse Stakes was one of the six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020. Open to four-year-olds and upwards, Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to the race’s name to be included and it now forms part of the permanently expanded programme. It is inspired by the magnificent statue of King George III – mounted on horseback – which marks the end of the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. The inaugural running was won by Fujaira Prince who went on to win the Ebor at York and was then second in the Group 1 Irish St. Leger and third in the British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day. the Royal Ascot Insider

1 Race Summary: This year’s Queen Anne is all about BAAEED, who quickly developed into a star miler last year and enhanced his reputation further still with a reappearance success in the Lockinge in which he impressively flexed his class. On the figures he’s improving, which raises the goosebumps-inducing possibility that he can produce an even more magnificent performance. Real World is unlikely to reverse Newbury placings with the selection but he looks rock solid for another silver medal. The battle for third place looks quite open but Chindit is taken to fill that position and repeat his Lockinge effort. Race Summary: The Coventry can produce an occasional shock result but the betting is usually a good guide and this year’s market principals look strong, with PERSIAN FORCE the pick. This imposing son of the 2016 runner-up Mehmas has impressed with his professionalism in winning both his starts and it’s high praise indeed that his trainer Richard Hannon has made comparisons with the stable’s superb 2009 winner Canford Cliffs. There’s also infectious confidence behind Blackbeard’s bid to provide Aidan O’Brien with a tenth success in the race, and it’s easy to see why after such a taking display at the Curragh. Of those at greater odds, Harry Time, Rousing Encore and Scholarship all merit a second look. Race Summary: How lucky it is for us that connections of the two highest-ranked sprinters in the world, Nature Strip and Golden Pal, have taken the very popular decision to bring them over from Australia and the United States for what promises to be a vintage King’s Stand. The main hope is that they will do themselves justice but this is not an easy track for a front-running sprinter and Golden Pal may just have to give way to Nature Strip, who can be ridden any way, in the closing stages. They are not the only ones to consider, though, as MAN OF PROMISE looked out of the top drawer himself when winning at Meydan in March and he is a fascinating prospect dropped to 5f. King’s Lynn can prove himself a better horse here than elsewhere and he has realistic hopes of improving considerably on last year’s unlucky seventh. Twilight Calls, who ran so well behind the latter at Haydock, also has a squeak. Feature Race Analysis Charlie Appleby has enjoyed a remarkable season so far and will be hoping to add further Group 1 success with Coroebus in the St James’s Palace Stakes. A lightly-raced potential superstar for Godolphin, Coroebus landed the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and will be looking to enhance the fine record of those who have run in the Guineas ahead of the royal meeting. Renewing rivalries with Coroebus from Newmarket are Berkshire Shadow Shadow,, Lusail, Light Infantry and Checkandchallenge, with the first-named finishing best of the quartet in fifth for Andrew Balding at a massive price of 80/1, but still has five lengths to find on the winner. The now-retired Poetic Flare bolted home for the Bolger/Manning partnership last year and will be hoping history can repeat itself with Wexford Native. He ran a blinder in the Irish 2,000 Guineas to finish fourth, while New Energy could be one to keep on side after his second in the same Classic. Aidan O’Brien is the leading trainer in the St James’s Palace with eight wins to his name and has the final runner from overseas with Aikhal, who hasn’t been seen since getting denied by Angel Bleu in the Criterium International in France. The unbeaten Maljoom makes plenty of appeal on paper, landing the German 2,000 Guineas, but Tom Marquand seems to prefer his stablemate My Prospero. Following his success over the highly respected Reach For The Moon in the Heron Stakes at Sandown, he could be a key player to try and turn over the odds-on favourite. Bayside Boy had a solid juvenile campaign and also defeated Reach For The Moon in a Group 2 at Doncaster, before going on to place in the Dewhurst and Futurity Trophy Stakes. Frankie Dettori gets the leg up on Mighty Ulysses, who still looks on the upward curve for John and Thady Gosden and could also play a part in the finish, if improving again. Race Summary: From a punting perspective, the two suggestions against the field are the William Haggastrained colts MY PROSPERO and Maljoom in that order. They are improving fast and look interesting alternatives to short-priced Coroebus, who is top rated and commands respect but goes into unknown territory on his first run away from Newmarket. Even if we assume Coroebus runs to form, the Haggas runners are still attractive propositions given their rate of progress. Mighty Ulysses, another improving type, completes the shortlist. 2021: RESHOUN (FR) 7 9 7 William Buick 66-1 (Ian Williams) 19 ran
Race Summary: Willie Mullins has proved time and time again that he can choose the right candidate for this race, so his Bring On The Night has to be the starting point for calculations. Gordon Elliott tries to pull off the same trick with Pied Piper, who is among several other notable hurdlers in this field. John Queally has a vastly smaller string but his Irish challenger ARCADIAN SUNRISE (nap) has already proved himself in competitive staying handicaps on the Flat, as well as over hurdles, and today’s extra distance can help him turn tables on the highly respected Coltrane who was just ahead of him in the Chester Cup. That may well be good enough to win, as they are the top two on the list. Make My Day is very interesting among those at longer odds, with Golden Flame and last year’s winner Reshoun also requiring a mention.

The Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race) - continued
Race Summary: A seriously tight Listed race in which a host can be given a chance. JUAN ELCANO won this second time up last season and might be capable of repeating the feat. Foxes Tales (second choice), who also won at this meeting last year, finished in front of the selection at Sandown in April and had lack of stamina as a plausible excuse for a slightly below-par run at Newbury, so he could pose a major threat if the outside stall isn’t too troublesome. Tasman Bay hasn’t been seen since finishing third in a Deauville Group 2 last August but that was one of a series of good efforts in his 3yo campaign and he’ll be thereabouts if reappearing in similar form. Harrovian, who should be able to get a nice position from his draw, and sole filly Aristia are also on the shortlist.
