Royal Ascot 2020 – Taking place safely behind closed doors Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending will be required to travel directly to and from the fixtures, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance at Royal Ascot is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse, jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media. All attendees at Royal Ascot will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19. 2 - An online health questionnaire – completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance. 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival at the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times. There are a small number of situations where social distancing will not be able to be maintained, albeit very briefly, such as legging up or loading horses into the stalls. PPE and/or face coverings will be worn within the racecourse by personnel who are unable to maintain social distancing. This will include jockeys, stalls handlers, stable staff, trainers and veterinary teams. Field sizes have been limited to 24 at Royal Ascot to help ensure social distancing throughout the site. For more information on how racing at Royal Ascot and other racecourses is taking place safely, please visit the British Horseracing Authority website: https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/covid-19-coronavirus-industry-guidance-and-updates/

Royal Ascot - Race Histories 1.15pm
The Silver Royal Hunt Cup (Handicap)
Run over Ascot’s famous Straight Mile and open to three-year-olds and upwards, today’s opening race is one of six to have been added to the Royal Meeting’s race programme in 2020. A consolation race for The Royal Hunt Cup, it allows those horses who missed the cut for this afternoon’s Heritage Handicap the chance to bid for Royal Ascot glory.
1.50pm
The Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3)
The Hampton Court Stakes was originally part of the Saturday Heath Day card, under the title of The New Stakes, and joined Royal Ascot as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. It became The Tercentenary Stakes and was promoted to a Group 3 when Ascot Racecourse celebrated 300 years since its inauguration in 2011, reverting to The Hampton Court Stakes in 2017. The ten-furlong contest, restricted to three-year-olds, is an eligible Epsom trial this year owing to the Derby and Oaks being - unusually - run after Royal Ascot and is therefore being run a day early in order to maximise the time before the Epsom Classics. Three of the last five winners - Cannock Chase (2014), Hawkbill (2016) and Benbatl (2017) - went on to triumph at Group 1 level. In 2018, jockey Ryan Moore claimed a momentous 50th Royal Ascot win in The Hampton Court Stakes aboard the Aidan O’Brien-trained Hunting Horn, while last year, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sangarius provided Royal Ascot’s winning-most trainer with a remarkable 81st success at the meeting.
2.25pm
The King George V Stakes (Handicap)
After two years being staged at Ascot’s July meeting, the three-year-old handicap was moved to Royal Ascot week in 1948 and is usually run on its third day. Notable among its winners is Moon Madness, who won in 1986 before claiming the final British Classic of the season, the Group 1 St Leger. Brown Panther, who provided owner-breeder Michael Owen with his first Royal Ascot success in 2011, went on to finish third in the 2014 Gold Cup before winning the Group 1 Irish St Leger that same year. Sir Michael Stoute has sent out five winners of the race, the most recent being Colony in 2008, while last year saw Aidan O’Brien train the first three home, with South Pacific getting the better of two of his Ballydoyle stablemates.
3.00pm
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, first run at Royal Ascot in 1862, is named after the son of Queen Victoria (later to become King Edward VII). Originally staged over a mile and five furlongs, there was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, a year before the current Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969 when its distance was shortened by three furlongs. The race’s roll of honour includes greats such as Brigadier Gerard (1972), Mtoto (1987 and 1988), Bosra Sham (1997), Ouija Board (2006), The Fugue (2014) and Highland Reel (2017), while Godolphin’s Dubai Millennium posted one of the greatest individual performances when scoring by eight lengths in 2000, the year the race was upgraded to Group 1 status and became restricted to four-year-olds and upwards. The 2018 winner Poet’s Word went on to complete a famous Ascot double when landing the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes here the following month, beating the popular Crystal Ocean, who memorably earned a long-awaited first Group 1 success with a gallant win in this contest the following year.
3.35pm
The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap)
The Royal Hunt Cup always provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting as a maximum field thunders up Ascot’s famous Straight Mile for one of the biggest betting races of the season. First run in 1843, it was originally staged over seven furlongs and 155 yards, with its current distance of a mile established in 1955 when the straight course was re-aligned. The Royal Hunt Cup has been one of the most successful Royal Ascot races for Her Majesty The Queen, providing three of her 23 Royal Ascot wins – Choir Boy (1953), Alexander (1956) and Colour Sergeant (1992).
4.10pm
The Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed Race)
First run in 1839 over the Straight Mile, this race was originally designed to attract three-year-old colts and fillies that had competed in the early season Classics. It is now run over the minimum distance of five furlongs and restricted to two-year-olds. A moment in history was made in 2009 when Strike The Tiger, sent out by Wesley Ward, became the first US-trained winner on the Flat in Britain, while Soldier’s Call provided a memorable first Royal Ascot victory in 2018 for his young second-season trainer, Archie Watson.
4.40pm
The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)
Staged over a mile and three quarters and open to four-year-olds and upwards, this is one of the six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020 as well as being one of three new prizes being included only this year. Her Majesty The Queen has graciously consented to the race’s temporary name, which was inspired by the magnificent statue of King George III - mounted on horseback which marks the end of the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park.

2019: SANGARIUS 3 9 0 Frankie Dettori 13-2 (Sir Michael Stoute) 13 ran Race Summary: Juan Elcano acquitted himself well in the 2,000 Guineas, staying on for fifth, beaten just four lengths by Kameko, while Kenzai Warrior lost any chance when fly-jumping at the start and is not helped by a 4lb penalty here. They have form in the book but look vulnerable to an improver and FIRST RECEIVER fits the bill for the Sir Michael Stoute stable that landed this race last year with Sangarius. Owned by The Queen and ridden by Frankie Dettori, First Receiver could be the most popular winner of the week. Race Summary: KIPPS made a big impression when travelling like the winner at Haydock over 1m2f last time but eventually losing out by a nose. He should be better suited by this surface, while the third home that day, Glenties, will enjoy this longer trip and represents the Mark Johnston stable that always sends a powerful contingent for this race which it has collected twice in the last decade. The well-bred Hukum will have plenty more to show at this trip, while Bodyline looks a typical representative of the Sir Mark Prescott stable. He has been crying out for this distance and shaped well at Yarmouth over 1m 2f on his return. Others to consider are recent easy Haydock winner Win O’Clock and Bright Melody from the powerful Godolphin team. A History Of Ascot Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. It all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’. That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters. In 1939, the first racing fixture staged separately from the Royal meeting took place at Ascot. 1951 saw the launch of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is staged every July and is one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the star-studded championship finale to the flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find what the next chapters hold.

CATEGORIES EXPLAINED... QIPCO British Champions Series showcases 35 of the UK’s finest Flat races, and last year included three of the world’s top five contests. The Series races are contested across five different categories – sprint; middle distance; long distance; fillies & mares and kicks off with the mile division and the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
SPRINT For horseracing’s speed merchants, the Sprint category comprises two races over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs and five races over 6 furlongs, including the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
MILE The Mile category kicks off with the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and is followed up by the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. The category culminates in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day. With prize money of £1.1 million, it is Europe’s richest mile race.
MIDDLE DISTANCE The Middle Distance division consists of a number of hugely valuable and iconic races run between 10 and 12 furlongs. Highlights from the seven-race series include the world-famous Investec Derby run at Epsom and Britain’s richest ten-furlong race, the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day.
LONG DISTANCE In the QIPCO British Champions Series Long Distance category come the stamina-sapping races for horses that can stay the trip - the “stayers”. The category features seven races in total across the calendar including the 2 1/4 mile Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.
FILLIES & MARES The very best fillies and mares battle it out to become queens of this division throughout the year, with seven Group 1 races run between 8 furlongs and 12 furlongs. This kicks off with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas in May and culminates in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes in October.

Addeybb had Mehdaayih in behind when second on soft ground to Japan’s stablemate, Magical, in the Champion Stakes here last October. He has since been enterprisingly campaigned and enhanced his reputation with two Group 1 wins in Australia on his favoured easy ground, while it is interesting that John Gosden pitches Mehdaayih back in at the highest level and she will appreciate a sounder surface. Barney Roy went close behind Ulysses in both the Eclipse and Juddmonte International over this trip back in 2017, before a stint at stud and change of stable, and has racked up two wins at Meydan over the winter, while Headman made a huge impression while quietly progressing through the ranks last summer. His first attempt at this level in the Irish Champion Stakes can be discounted as he could not recover after fly-jumping at the start.

The Impact Of Coronavirus As a result of the unprecedented impact of the global coronavirus pandemic across the world in 2020, we are unable to welcome racegoers to join us for this year’s Royal Ascot. Following ongoing discussions with the UK government, racing will take place behind closed doors - with the safety of the public, staff and participating connections taking priority over everything else. We look forward to welcoming our racegoers to Royal Ascot 2021 but are pleased to be able to provide racing fans with the opportunity to watch the five-day meeting on television. Royal Ascot 2020 will go ahead across the five days originally planned, from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June inclusive. All of the historic events remain on a revised timetable, with the addition of an extra six races resulting in a total of 36 contests across the five days: seven on the first four days and eight on the final day. With racing only resuming in Great Britain on 1st June, the decision has been taken to make some changes from the traditional schedule. The St James’s Palace Stakes and The Coronation Stakes have been moved to the final day to maximise the amount of time between those races and The 2000 and 1000 Guineas, which took place on 6th and 7th June. Four of the six two-year-old races will take place on the Friday and the Saturday, providing this year’s juveniles with as much time as possible before contesting key races at Royal Ascot. All 36 races will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Racing and 30 will be shown live on ITV1. As well as being able to watch the action live, you can join us in celebrating Royal Ascot 2020 via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels and the official Ascot app.

ROYAL ASCOT AT HOME By Henry Birtles, The Racing Poet It may not be the same, from much we now refrain And though we long for normal times to come around again Our challenge is adapting to hold onto what we treasure Our norms, our fun, our everydays, The things that make us…US, our ways Our business and our pleasure It may not be the same, it will not be the same, But June is here, the skies are clear, it’s Racing ’s time again Royal Ascot goes ahead, for once behind closed doors It’s thumbs up time, our sport proceeds The champion Jockeys, Noble Steeds, Assembled for The Cause Positive’s the byword; looking forward, it’s unique It will not happen every year, this one-off Ascot Week It’s screen time, Twitter, Facebook, the old Telly, Insta, Zoom Remotely party with your friends Bring what you can, the odds and ends And decorate the room StyledWithThanks, the Hashtag, is a calling to our nation, To honour those who help us, through a form of celebration To tell them that we won’t forget, for them we must campaign We’ll stay indoors, tune in and cheer We’ll drink to now and pray next year, We’ll hit the track again But now is now and now is here, a virtual life existence Two metres is the guideline, our ordered social distance So let us find it in ourselves to give it all we can Enjoy it all, as if we’re there, Glad rags and hats, good times and flare The stay home Ascot Fan

He may have most to fear from Lord Tennyson, who quickly progressed from a Chelmsford maiden win in February to chasing home Marie’s Diamond in the Listed Paradise Stakes at Newmarket last week. The third there, Vale Of Kent, is an old hand at these big-field handicaps and looks to have improved now stepped up to 1m. Others of interest are last year’s winner Afaak and the lightly-raced Fox Premier, who recorded a smart performance at Goodwood last summer when last seen but may require longer trips to show his best.

The Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed Race) - continued Race Summary: With 11 Royal Ascot winners on the board from 65 runners, with a strike-rate of 17% and a level-stakes profit of £45 to a £1 stake over the past 11 years, Wesley Ward cannot be ignored, particularly in two-year-old races. He won this with Hootenanny in 2014 and his runners here are the Qatar Racing-owned Sheriff Bianco, second on dirt at Churchill Downs last month, and Sunshine City, a winner at Gulfstream Park in April. Aidan O’Brien is the most successful trainer in this race in the past decade with two wins, including Southern Hills last year. His main representative this time is CHIEF LITTLE HAWK, a smooth winner at Navan on his debut last week. Archie Watson saddled the winner of this race two years ago and sends out runaway seven-length Lingfield winner Mighty Gurkha, while Get It and Tactical, second and third in a smart-looking race at Newmarket, are others to consider. ROYAL BLUE, YELLOW chevron, YELLOW cap, 19 ROYAL BLUE spots. HHHH Some useful form for Sir Michael Stoute at up to 1m6f without winning last season, including sound handicap fourth here (1m4f ) in July; will presumably be dropped in and ridden from off the pace from this wide draw; has been gelded; pick of last season’s form gives this 4yo possibilities for his new yard (same owner). CLARET, GOLD braid, CLARET sleeves, 9 CLARET cap, GOLD tassel. HHHH Improved once sent handicapping in last year’s first season, including breakthrough success at Redcar (1m6f) in August and then a wide-margin winner on Wolverhampton AW (2m) in October; seemed well suited by step up to 2m on latter occasion so return to 1m6f not certain to suit but still shortlisted up 12lb, with further progress pretty likely this year. Now a six-year-old, he has managed only six career starts so has huge potential to exploit. The consistent and lightly raced Almania has been gelded and changed stables from Sir Michael Stoute to David Simcock since finishing third over course and distance in October. Selino, purchased by Qatar Racing since cantering to victory by 10 lengths over 2m at Wolverhampton in October, should not be underestimated. Racing Notices Position Of Stalls Straight Course - Centre Round Course - Inside Form Guide And Rating Under each horse the form is given, followed by a star rating and its official BHA Rating. The form guides and star ratings are compiled by the Racing Post. Horse Welfare At every race meeting at Ascot there are four specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses racing on these days. During each race, vets follow the horses by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is now standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse. Race Information The names of probable Riders, Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions and Value of Races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are not guaranteed as correct.
