THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to bet365 Classic Trial Day, the first of two days of superb racing action both on the flat and over jumps which show Sandown Park at its finest, as one of racing’s leading dual purpose racecourses. Our thanks go to bet365 for their sponsorship over the next two days, and I am delighted that they will continue to support this fixture for the next three years. Today also sees the welcome return of owners back on course for the first time since December. The experience will continue to be different to the one we are used to providing here at Sandown Park, but nonetheless it is wonderful to be able to have racing’s biggest investors back on track to see their horses compete in two days of top-class racing. We have seen some of the best thoroughbreds on the planet compete on this day in recent years. Established stars on the world stage such as Paco Boy, Ulysses, Crystal Ocean and Addeybb have all been victorious, and today’s card looks one full of quality and competition. Whether you are on-course or watching on TV courtesy of ITV or Racing TV, I hope you enjoy today’s card and look forward to seeing you on course again before too long. WELCOME BACK TO SANDOWN PARK

We can’t wait to welcome spectators back to Sandown Park. The first meeting that we are able to do so is scheduled as Evening Racing on Thursday 20th May 2021 followed by Coral Brigadier Gerard Evening on Thursday 27th May. The 2021 fixtures can be found here. When you return things will probably look a little different to your last racecourse visit so please do read and familiarise yourself with all the information here about returning to racing before you join us. Since we last saw you, The Jockey Club teams and our racecourses have pulled together to provide practical support to vulnerable members of our local communities, to volunteer and fundraise for charities and to provide venue facilities across our country for the NHS’s vaccination programme. We’ve also been racing safely behind closed doors for many months and have been in close liaison throughout with our industry colleagues, sporting authorities and the Government to share best practice and continue to provide a safe environment for your return to live racing. We’re looking forward to welcoming you safely back to Sandown Park. Please take a moment to read the following information ahead of your next raceday visit:

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 GORDON RICHARDS STAKES RACE DESCRIPTION The bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes is run over a mile and a quarter

and is for horses aged four years old and above. This is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

PREVIOUS

GROUP 3

WINNER

RUN OVER ONE MILE, ONE FURLONG AND 209 YARDS

CRYSTAL OCEAN

The first horse in the history of the race to defend his Gordon Richards Stakes title and the first since Chancellor in 2004 to win this contest twice, the top-class Crystal Ocean readily dispatched a classy field under Ryan Moore to win by two and a quarter lengths. Always prominently positioned, Crystal Ocean hit the front two furlongs from home and steadily drew clear of the field up the hill, running out a ready winner of this Group 3 for the second year in a row.

A belting renewal of this Group 3, featuring a few who are likely to make their presence felt at the highest level in 2021. FACTS & STATS THE bet365 MILE RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile race for four-year-olds and older is a Group 2 contest and will attract some of the best milers around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty and any winner of a Group 1 contest is given a 5lb penalty to shoulder. BEAT THE BANK

After winning the race back in 2014 with the excellent Tullius, Andrew Balding secured a second bet365 Mile courtesy of the brave Beat The Bank, who fought off the challenge of Sharja Bridge to win by half a length. Ridden by the excellent Silvestre De Sousa, the Paco Boy gelding tracked the leader throughout the early stages of the race and even though it took a few strides for him to click into top gear, once he did pick up inside the final furlong, there was no catching him.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 CLASSIC TRIAL RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile and two furlong race for three-year-olds is another Group 3 contest – this time a chance for the Classic generation to strut their stuff. It takes a high-class three-year-old to win a race like this and it is designed to be a stepping stone to Classic success later on in the season. Initially, the weights are allocated as 9st 1lb for colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses which have won at a higher level already – 3lb for a Group 2 or 5lb to those successful in a Group 1.

PREVIOUS

WINNER BERLIN TANGO

Run at Kempton Park due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrew Balding saddled his third winner of the race in the last six years. Berlin Tango had previously been placed twice at Listed level, but recorded his best performance here under David Probert, starting quickly to gain a prominent position and holding off the late challenge of the smart Pyledriver to win by a length and a quarter at the line.

A fascinating renewal of the Classic Trial. TRAWLERMAN clocked a good time when running away with a Ponterfract maiden earlier in the month and this fast improving son of Golden Horn can take this step up in class in his stride for the Gosden team. PLAY SMARTER

CHIASMA has an awful lot to live up to being a sister to the outstanding Frankel no less but she is under the expert tutelage of the Gosden team and taken to get off to a winning start. Charlie Appleby has his string in fine nick so his Lingfield scorer Nash Nasha, a daughter of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge, seems sure to have a say, with Royal Harmony another eye-catching debutante.
