THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

A warm welcome to the 2021 bet365 Jump Finale, when we will see the champions of the season crowned alongside a superb card of jump racing action. Our thanks go to bet365 for their sponsorship today and it is exciting news that they will continue to support this fixture for the next three years. The congratulations of all at Sandown Park are with those who will become champions today, whether for the first time or just the latest. To come out on top in any season is an achievement worthy of praise, but to have done so having to contend with all the unexpected trials and tribulations that the pandemic has brought is a remarkable achievement by all concerned. We have a day of jump racing right out of the top drawer to look forward to with something for everyone. The Grade 1 bet365 Celebration Chase, won by some of the greatest two mile chasers in the history of the sport, will see speed to the fore. The bet365 Gold Cup will require stamina in abundance as we witness the latest renewal of one of racing’s most historic handicaps. Whether you are on course or watching on TV courtesy of ITV or Racing TV, I hope you enjoy today’s card and look forward to seeing you on course again before too long. WELCOME BACK TO SANDOWN PARK

We can’t wait to welcome spectators back to Sandown Park. The first meeting that we are able to do so is scheduled as Evening Racing on Thursday 20th May 2021 followed by Coral Brigadier Gerard Evening on Thursday 27th May. The 2021 fixtures can be found here. When you return things will probably look a little different to your last racecourse visit so please do read and familiarise yourself with all the information here about returning to racing before you join us. Since we last saw you, The Jockey Club teams and our racecourses have pulled together to provide practical support to vulnerable members of our local communities, to volunteer and fundraise for charities and to provide venue facilities across our country for the NHS’s vaccination programme. We’ve also been racing safely behind closed doors for many months and have been in close liaison throughout with our industry colleagues, sporting authorities and the Government to share best practice and continue to provide a safe environment for your return to live racing. We’re looking forward to welcoming you safely back to Sandown Park. Please take a moment to read the following information ahead of your next raceday visit:

Lord Oaksey

1929 - 2012

Today sees the seventh running of the bet365 Oaksey Steeple Chase, a Grade 2 race run over 2 miles 6 and a half furlongs, named after one of racing's great personalities. Lord (John) Oaksey was renowned as one of the best amateur jockeys of his era. His notable wins at Sandown Park included his first success under rules in 1956 aboard Pyrene, the Imperial Cup under Flaming East in 1958 and victory in the second ever running of the bet365 Gold Cup (then known as the Whitbread Gold Cup) with Taxidermist the same year. John was a hugely loved and respected personality who went on to lead a successful career in racing-focused journalism and broadcasting. The lasting legacy of Lord Oaksey lives on through his tireless work in founding and fundraising for the Injured Jockeys Fund, a charity inspired by two devastating accidents to former weighing room colleagues. Lady Oaksey, widow of the late Lord Oaksey; “John’s family are very pleased that bet365 and the Racecourse have decided to honour his name at the bet365 Jump Finale, particularly as Sandown Park was his favourite racecourse.”

FRODON PROFILE

Running in today’s bet365 Oaksey Chase, Frodon is one of the best-loved horses in training today. Trained by Paul Nicholls and regularly ridden by Bryony Frost, the Paul Vogt-owned chaser is a brave, versatile horse who has won a plethora of different races in his career, from two-mile hurdles in his native France to staying chases over three miles and further at Cheltenham, including a Festival victory when taking the spoils in the 2019 Ryanair Chase - one of the most popular wins of the last decade.

With a high-class field that included dual winner and stablemate Clan Des Obeaux amongst others, this season’s King George was a race that contained the best of the best of British steeplechasing. Sent into a customary early lead by Bryony Frost, Frodon dictated the pace of the race, jumping with pinpoint accuracy and stretching his rivals. He still led approaching two out and after Frost asked him for his full effort, he stretched clear of his toiling rivals and held on well to win by two and a half lengths.

Initially, the weights in this two mile, six and a half furlong steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or 2 success. PREVIOUS

Having failed to complete the last twice, MISTER FISHER will need to produce a more assured round of jumping in order to master the spring-heeled Frodon round here. HEAD TO HEAD

THE BATTLE TO BE CHAMPION JOCKEY This year’s quest to become Champion jockey has seen two brilliant pilots going toe to toe and the way that both Harry Skelton and Brian Hughes have approached that mission from two very different positions encapsulates everything great about our sport. There is no right way to ride winners and this year’s results suggest you can both be successful as a retained stable jockey for a big operation and also as a rider who works almost in a freelance manner. Harry Skelton has brought a real desire when it comes to being the best and that is proven in his quest to be Champion jockey, a desire mirrored by Brian Hughes, last year’s champion after beating four-time Champion jockey and all-round brilliant horseman Richard Johnson, who retired just a few weeks ago - we all certainly wish him the very best in his next venture out of the saddle. Hughes has an excellent relationship with powerful Northern trainer Donald McCain and last week, McCain described the championship race as a ‘David and Goliath’ situation due to the quality of rides Harry Skelton gets from his trainer and brother Dan Skelton. Despite Skelton having arguably the better rides in the context of the wider National Hunt scene in Britain, Brian Hughes picks up a lot of potential winning rides from Northern trainers due to him being one of the best and most knowledgeable riders around those tracks, making the most of the opportuinities closer to home. McCain’s comments weren’t unjust as in the 2020/2021 season, Harry Skelton has ridden over 150 winners for his brother, whereas in that same time he’d only ridden 16 winners for other trainers. If you compare this to Brian Hughes, he has ridden 57 winners for his main employer Donald McCain and has ridden winners for 26 separate other trainers this season. The difference in how they have both got to 140+ winners is remarkable and is fantastic for the sport, highlighting the many routes to success. Only two days before this meeting, Harry Skelton secured his first Champion jockey title a huge achievement and it must have been all the sweeter considering it went right down to the wire. Despite this, there have been some memorable moments to reflect on for both jockeys and with the firepower the Skeltons have, it’s probably a matter of how many more winners will come, rather than if they will have any. In terms of 'Harry's highlights' this year, Allmankind has been a revelation over fences since making the switch and won the King Henry VIII here at Sandown Park before adding to his Grade 1 victory with two Grade 2s, one at Warwick and then another at Ayr last week. Spanish-bred Nube Negra was an agonising second at Cheltenham in the Queen Mother Champion Chase behind Put The Kettle On, after he had dispatched Altior in fine style at Kempton Park in the Desert Orchid earlier in the season, but bids to go one better at Punchestown. Skelton has also been on board upcoming stars like My Drogo, a

horse who looks to be the most promising novice hurdler this side of the Irish sea after his victory in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices' Hurdle at Aintree. Brian Hughes has not ridden as many winners at the very top level, but one of his more notable was his victory aboard Lake View Lad in the Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase at Aintree back in December of last year. The then ten-year-old beat home a whole host of former Cheltenham Festival winners, including Frodon, who was the subsequent King George winner, and Native River. Hughes gave Neil Alexander's charge a superb ride on what must have felt an eternally long run in, with no fences being jumped in the home straight due to the low sun. He has ridden some promising looking horses for Donald McCain this year too, such as Bareback Jack, who will more than likely become a Graded performer next season.

Allmankind

Lake View Lad

Ultimately, what this year’s jockey championship has done is revive some of the memories of the old Richard Johnson vs AP McCoy magic and continue the drama we've seen in recent times. Often the jockeys' championship can be overlooked in individual riders' quests for one winner on the big day and to see someone like Harry Skelton go and give it his all is brilliant to see. Brian Hughes has been more than a worthy competitor and although he won’t be making it back to back victories, that doesn’t mean to say he hasn’t had what is clearly a sensational season. It’s been a real battle between two jockeys at the very top of their game and recently, every race they have been in together has felt like a World Cup Final. One such race came recently at Hexham where Dazzling Glory defeated the Hughes-ridden Geronimo in a head bobber for Skelton after a ding-dong battle up the run in. It was fine performance from both jockeys that really showed how much it means to them and is ultimately reflective of the contest they've had all season. Congratulations to Harry Skelton, the 2020/21 Champion Jump Jockey!

Skelton (l) and Hughes (r) head to head once again

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 CELEBRATION CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION

The highest class race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance.

For the third year in succession, Altior rose highest in the bet365 Celebration Chase, taking his tenth Grade 1 triumph in typically strong-staying style. Jumping boldly on the front end of the contest under usual partner Nico De Boinville, Altior had to work hard to repel the challenge of old rival Sceau Royal but he pulled out more after the last to draw two and a half lengths clear at the line and chalk up a bet365 Celebration Chase hat-trick, his trainer’s fourth in a row.

Third Race

bet365.com

THE bet365 GOLD CUP HISTORY & HIGHLIGHTS

As we reach the end of our National Hunt season, Sandown Park hosts its annual end of season two-day card. It features some brilliant flat racing before the jumps take centre stage on the Saturday. An excellent card is headlined by the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase, run over three miles and five furlongs for five-year-olds or older. First run in 1957, the race now enters its 64th year but after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of last year's renewal, it is now hosting its 63rd renewal. 1957 saw the inaugural race taken by Much Obliged and jockey Johnny East. Back then the race was known as the Whitbread Gold Cup, due to it being sponsored by Whitbread Brewers. Chairman Colonel Bill Whitbread had actually ridden in the Grand National twice as an amateur jockey. Neville Crump went on to win the race in 1963 and then again in 1964, with Hoodwinked and Dormant. He was quite the trainer, winning two National Hunt trainers championships, three Grand Nationals, five Scottish Nationals and of course a hattrick of Whitbread Gold Cups. His dominance in the National Hunt sphere, combined with his success in this race shows its importance to trainers - it is a race that has a rich history and has been won by some of the best horses of the last century. Talking of great horses, none other than Arkle 'himself' won the race in 1965 carrying a record 12st 7lb - another tremendous achievement for arguably the greatest racehorse to ever step foot on a racecourse. He did it after winning the 1965 Gold Cup at Cheltenham and was unbeaten in all five starts during the 1965/66 season. Arkle went off a short price favourite at 4/9 but obliged by an eased down 5 lengths. It was the third victory in what would become an eight-race winning streak before he was eventually beaten at Newbury by half a length.

Arkle soars over the last ahead of Mill House in the 1965 renewal.

The race’s most successful trainer, Fulke Walwyn, registered his second victory in the race with Mill House two years later. It was to be his last major win after being plagued by a series of back injuries, which ultimately stopped him the following year, instead the race was won by Larbawn. Larbawn was trained in 1968 by Macer Grifford but in 1969 the baton was passed to Josh Gifford, who managed to train Larbawn to another success in the race the following year. Rather suitably, Gifford now has a race named after him on this very same card. 1984 served up one of the most memorable finishes, which epitomized what horse racing is all about. Diamond Edge was returning to the race to try and be the first to make to make it a hat-trick of wins in the race and looked to have things sewn up 100 yards out, until Special Cargo and Kevin Mooney came from the clouds to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Given a brilliant ride, he was held up out the back and came with an exhilarating late run to beat his stable mate. Owned by the Queen Mother, it was a fantastic victory and gave Fulke Walwyn the 1-2 in a race he loved to win - he is the race's winningmost trainer with an amazing seven victories in the bet365 Gold Cup.

Special Cargo

Desert Orchid

It was four years later that another racing great took home the spoils. Four King Georges, amongst numerous other unbelievable achievements, underpinned the great Desert Orchid's career and he was a horse who was loved and adored by many. His win in the race in 1988 saw a brilliant ride by jockey Simon Sherwood, who was merely playing with his rivals coming to the last and when it looked like it might be a tight finish, he simply kicked clear again to win going away despite carrying the welterweight of 11st 11lb. This win came a year before his famous 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup Win, which further secured his place in racing folklore. In more recent history, Topsham Bay and Ad Hoc became the next two horses to win the race twice in the 1990s and early 2000s, joining the likes of Larbawn and Diamond Edge. Ruby Walsh rode Ad Hoc to victory on both occasions for trainer Paul Nicholls who has also won the race in 2012 and 2015 courtesy of Tidal Bay and Just A Par, making him the trainer to fear in modern times. in 2008, our partners bet365 took over as regular sponsor of the race and Monkerhostin was the inaugural bet365 Gold CUp winner for Philip Hobbs and the recently retired riding great, Richard Johnson. There have been plenty of brilliant contests in the bet365 Gold Cup since, but perhaps Sean and Peter Bowen's family success in 2017, where Henllan Harri defied monster odds of 40/1 to win by the narrowest of heads to Vyta Du Roc was the most thrilling of all the reenewals in the last decade. After we sadly missed the contest in 2020 it will be fantastic to see a new name engraved on the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase trophy this afternoon - it's another superb contest in prospect.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION

This historic event is a handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards run over three miles, four and a half furlongs. Unlike most other handicaps there are no ratings restriction here, so some classy performers may be tempted to take part in a race that has a rich history. However, the same principle of handicapping exists, so a horse officially rated 147, such as Potterman, carries 5lb more than the likes of Smooth Stepper, Irish Prophecy and The Young Master, all rated 142.

Lots with chances. Paul Nicholls’ ENRILO remains relatively unexposed over fences and is fancied to take a big step forward now tackling a marathon trip on just his second handicap start. FACTS & STATS THE bet365 SELECT HURDLE RACE DESCRIPTION

Another high-class Grade 2 contest on today’s card, this time a two mile, five and a half furlong hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. This race, again much like the other Graded contests today, has the weights allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 2 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success.

YOUNEVERCALL In front from flagfall under David Bass, Younevercall was still there come the finishing post for trainer Kim Bailey, giving a superb display of jumping and staying power to take his first success at Graded level. Despite the close attentions of classy rivals On The Blind Side and Black Op turning for home, Younevercall had kept plenty in the tank for the climb up the hill and powered clear of his tiring rivals in the final two furlongs to win by nine lengths at the line.

JOSH GIFFORD 1941-2012

Josh Gifford was a tremendous supporter of Sandown Park, both as a jockey and particularly as a trainer. As a jockey the four-time Champion had his greatest success here on Larbawn in the 1969 Whitbread Gold Cup and achieved the rare feat of winning the same race as a trainer with Shady Deal in 1982. Other big handicap wins here included the 1976 Imperial Cup with Nougat, and the 1980 Mildmay Cazalet Chase with Modesty Forbids. Josh had a tremendous record in the major novice races here, and in the 1980s won three renewals of the Henry VIII Novices Chase, with Our Fun, Midnight Count and Ballyhane. During his training career he also won the Scilly Isles Novices Chase three times, with Potentate, Yeoman Broker and Bradbury Star, and a Tolworth Novices Hurdle with Midnight Count. No-one present on the day will ever forget Josh's last runner and winner as a trainer, when on April 26 2003 Skycab surged up the Esher hill to bring down the curtain on a wonderful training career in the most perfect manner. Sandown Park was one of Josh’s favourite courses and we are delighted to name the bet365 Josh Gifford Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase in his memory.

Seventh Race

CASCOVA was most impressive when getting off the mark in a small field at Ascot last time and, given his racing style, a bigger field and stronger pace promises to bring a chunk of improvement out of him, so he’s preferred to recent winners Floating Rock and Scaramanga. L’Homme Presse is another one to consider.
