CORAL WELCOME TO
WELCOMES YOU CORAL HERON STAKES EVENING A message from our long-standing sponsor – Coral We are thrilled to welcome you to Sandown Park today on what will be our 47th year of sponsoring the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse stakes, and we hope you have a fantastic day witnessing one of the most prestigious Flat races staged anywhere in the World. At Coral we are passionate about horse racing, and the most committed long-standing sponsor in the sport, but we want to do even more to bring our customers and racing fans closer to the action. To that end we have created an incredible Virtual Race Experience with our talented partners at JockeyCam where you can experience what it’s like to ride in the Coral-Eclipse through a VR Headset by visiting our stage in front of the Grandstand. Have a great day and enjoy the top-class racing.
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOME TO
WELCOMES YOUEVENING CORAL HERON STAKES Welcome to Sandown Park for Coral-Eclipse Day, featuring seven thrilling races including the Group One Coral-Eclipse. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Coral for their ongoing support, with 2022 marking their 47th year of sponsorship of the Coral-Eclipse, the longest running sponsorship of a Group race in the world. The Coral-Eclipse is the first opportunity to see the cream of this year’s three year old crop take on the best of the older horses. In recent years the three year olds have dominated with St Mark’s Basilica winning in 2021 before going on to be crowned Champion Three Year Old Colt and European Horse of the Year at the Cartier Racing Awards. Other three year old winners have included Roaring Lion, Golden Horn and Sea the Stars, all of whom have been awarded Champion Three Year Old Colt. Make sure to stick around after racing to enjoy a live DJ set from Sonny Jay. This will start shortly after the last race, so head down to the Parade Ring to finish off your evening. Looking ahead, we have three music nights to look forward to at Sandown Park. Kicking off with Paloma Faith live on Wednesday 20th July, followed by Nile Rodgers & Chic on Wednesday 27th July and Simply Red on Thursday 4th August. Tickets for these fixtures are on sale through the Sandown Park website. I hope that you have a fantastic time with us at Sandown Park and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck. Sarah Drabwell General Manager of Sandown Park Racecourse

ECLIPSE 1764 - 1789
Whichever horse wins the 2022 running of the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, will be a direct descendent, through his male line, to ECLIPSE, foaled in 1764. Perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time, and after whom the race is named, he raced a total of 18 times resulting in a victory on each occasion. He was already a 5-y-o when he contested his first race at Epsom Downs in 1769 and with no horse able to compete with him, he was retired to stud after just three seasons. The lineage chart, shown here, depicts the impact ECLIPSE has had on the thoroughbred breeding lines and, it is estimated, 95% of thoroughbreds can be traced back to this great horse. From this year’s Grand National winner, NOBLE YEATS, through Cheltenham Gold Cup winners, the current highest rated racehorse, BAAEED, and the winners of each of the four Classics run in Great Britain and France and the three run in Ireland to date in 2022, his DNA is present. Perhaps more pertinently for the future of the thoroughbred, the two greatest sires of recent times, SADLER’S WELLS, whose only Group 1 victory in the United Kingdom was the 1984 running of the Eclipse Stakes, and GALILEO, are his descendents. RAASEL has proved to be a perfect advertisement for his shrewd connections, taking his form to a new level and clocking a good time when continuing his winning spree upped to Listed company at Haydock, and shades the vote in what looks a highly-competitive Group 3. Mitbaahy was an impressive winner of a Listed event over C&D and is high on the shortlist, while Equilateral shaped as if retaining all his ability at Royal Ascot and is the form pick if this doesn’t come too soon.

ECLIPSE (1764-1789) The Group One Coral-Eclipse commemorates one of the most influential horses of all-time – the legendary Eclipse. Not only was he phenomenally impressive on the racecourse, his success at stud is still relevant in the modern day, with 95 per cent of all Thoroughbred racehorses directly related to the 18th Century superstar. Ben Cox takes a look at the career of a racehorse and stallion who helped shape the sport we love today…
Bred by the Duke of Cumberland, a son of King George II, Eclipse acquired his name by being born during the great solar eclipse of 1764. There is no record of his birthplace, but it is most likely to have been at the Duke’s stud in Windsor. Sadly the Duke died in 1765 and at the dispersal sale of his bloodstock interests, Eclipse was sold to sheep dealer William Wildman for 75 Guineas, which with inflation would equate to around £10,000 today. A highly-strung chestnut colt with a white blaze and one white sock, Eclipse was allowed to develop by Wildman and did not actually step on to a racecourse until he was five years old. He made his debut at Epsom Downs on May 3rd 1769, claiming a Plate valued at £50 after winning each of the four-mile heats by a distance. It was on this day that noted gambler Dennis O’Kelly is reported to have said “Eclipse first, the rest nowhere” when placing a bet. O’Kelly subsequently bought a half-share in Eclipse for 650 Guineas. Eclipse would win all of his nine races in 1769, although his dominance was scaring off the competition and three of his successes were walk-overs. In 1770 O’Kelly bought out Wildman’s remaining half-share for 1,100 Guineas – the equivalent of around £150,000 today - and Eclipse was utterly dominant throughout the year. His victories included those at venues which remain familiar to this day, such as Newmarket and York and others which have since closed, like Guildford and Lincoln. By the end of 1770, Eclipse had won another nine races. Having seen off all competition and with nothing left to prove, he was retired with an unbeaten record of 18 starts and 18 wins. Eclipse stood as a stallion from 1771, based initially in Epsom before moving to Edgware, Middlesex. He sired 344 winners including Derby winners Young Eclipse, Saltram, Volunteer, and Sergeant. The most significant of his offspring was Potatoooooooos often amusingly abbreviated to Pot8os - one of the best racehorses of the 18th Century and an extremely influential sire. A fourth generation offspring of foundation sire the Darley Arabian, Eclipse played a pivotal role in the development of the modern Thoroughbred racehorse – so much so that 95 per cent of racehorses today have lineage directly back to him. Eclipse died on February 26th 1789 and although not especially impressive in terms of his looks, an examination of Eclipse’s body after his death revealed he had an abnormally large heart. His skeleton was preserved and is housed at the Royal Veterinary College in London, while the great horse was also the subject of several paintings by the outstanding equine artist George Stubbs.

THE CORAL-ECLIPSE ANNIVERSARIES IN 2022
The Coral-Eclipse has produced some sensational races and impressive winners in its illustrious history. Here, Ben Cox takes a look at some milestone anniversaries as we stage the Group One contest in 2022…
Ulysses 5 YEARS AGO (2017) - Ulysses becomes a sixth Coral-Eclipse winner for Sir Michael Stoute, enabling the Newmarket-based trainer to equal the record set by Alec Taylor Jr in the early 20th Century. Since then Aidan O’Brien has also subsequently trained six Coral-Eclipse winners. 10 YEARS AGO (2012) – Nathaniel is a first Coral-Eclipse winner for trainer John Gosden and jockey William Buick. A contemporary of the great Frankel, Nathaniel has gone on to great successes as a stallion with 11-time Group One heroine Enable and 2022 Cazoo Derby winner Desert Crown among his progeny. Nathaniel
15 YEARS AGO (2007) – An inspired ride from Ryan Moore sees Notnowcato plough a lone furrow up the stands’ side rail to come home in front. It is a fifth Coral-Eclipse for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.
20 YEARS AGO (2002) – After filling the runner-up position in both the 2000 Guineas and Derby, Hawk Wing gains a deserved first victory of the season to hand a second Coral-Eclipse to trainer Aidan O’Brien and a third to jockey Michael Kinane. 25 YEARS AGO (1997) – Pilsudski gains the third of his six Grade One career victories to give a second Coral-Eclipse success to both trainer Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Michael Kinane. 30 YEARS AGO (1992) – Irish challenger Kooyonga becomes just the second filly to win the CoralEclipse, after Pebbles seven years earlier. The daughter of Persian Bold was trained by Michael Kauntze and ridden by Warren O’Connor.
Notnowcato
40 YEARS AGO (1982) – Having had an interrupted three year old career, Kalaglow comes good as a four year with an impressive four-length victory for trainer Guy Harwood and jockey Greville Starkey. 50 YEARS AGO (1972) – The great Brigadier Gerard, the joint-best British-trained horse of the 20th Century as assessed by Timeform with a rating of 144, records the 14th of his 17 victories from 18 starts. Trained by Dick Hern and partnered by Joe Mercer, “The Brigadier” is not suited by the soft ground at Sandown Park but shows all his customary determination to defeat Gold Rod by a length nevertheless.
Brigadier Gerard
60 YEARS AG0 (1962) Henry The Seventh carries the famous colours of owner Jim Joel to success to justify 8-11 favouritism. 70 YEARS AGO (1952) – Tulyar follows up his Derby success by taking the Eclipse for his owner-breeder Aga Khan III, trainer Marcus Marsh and jockey Charlie Smirke. Tulyar followed up with victories in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and St Leger at Doncaster and ended 1952 as the top-rated horse in Europe by Timeform. 75 YEARS AGO (1947) – Migoli becomes the second of the Aga Khan III’s three Eclipse winners and also one of three Eclipse successes for jockey Charlie Smirke. 100 YEARS AGO (1922) – Golden Myth hands the first of three Eclipse victories to jockey Charlie Elliott. Elliott was just 17 years old at the time and went on to further Eclipse success aboard Djeddah (1949) and Argur (1953).

PLAY SMARTER
The fast-improving HEREDIA scythed through the field in taking style to land the Sandringham at Royal Ascot 15 days ago and, while the complexion of this race is slightly different, her class should be enough to see her prevail. Grande Dame is the main danger despite a sub-par showing in the Coronation Stakes and Queen Aminatu warrants a mention at a bigger price.

THE CORALECLIPSE
TH ROUGHOUT TH E DECADES T h is ye a r se e s yet a n oth e r r u n n in g of to d ay ’s fe atu re contest, the Group 1 Coral- Eclipse. Par t of the British Champions Series , the mile and a quar ter highlight boasts some outstanding winners over the years . Isinglass (1894) – The sixth winner of the Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby & St Leger) in 1893, Isinglass won 11 of his 12 races. His Eclipse victory as a four-year-old saw him overcome 1894 Derby winner Ladas by a length in a thrilling finish. Flying Fox (1899) – It took all the skill of legendary trainer John Porter to bring out the best in Flying Fox but the colt was unbeatable in 1899, winning the Triple Crown and Eclipse. The successful owner, the 1st Duke of Westminster, donated his winning prize money from Sandown Park to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. Diamond Jubilee (1900) – Owned and bred by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, Diamond Jubilee was so-named as he was foaled
in the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. A very difficult horse to handle, he came into his own when partnered by 19-year-old Herbert Jones in 1900. As well as winning the Triple Crown, he was outstanding when landing the Eclipse in course-record time. Blue Peter (1939) – Winner of the 2000 Guineas and Derby, the outbreak of World War II prevented Blue Peter attempting the Triple Crown. The Eclipse was his fourth and final win from as many starts in 1939. His owner-breeder Lord Rosebery commented: “He was the best horse I ever had and was the best I had ever seen and he had only half a career as a racehorse." Tulyar (1952) – The Aga Khan’s Tulyar was unbeatable throughout 1952 with the Eclipse Stakes among his six victories ,which also included The Derby, St Leger and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. At the end of the year he had accrued prize money of £76,577 – a record for a British-trained racehorse at the time.
Dancing Brave
Royal Palace (1968) – Royal Palace’s victory in 1968 was probably the most thrilling finish ever seen in the Eclipse Stakes as he got up in the final strides to defeat Taj Dewan by a short-head with outstanding 1968 Derby winner Sir Ivor close up in third. Mill Reef (1971) – After going down to Brigadier Gerard in the 2000 Guineas, the outstanding Mill Reef was never beaten again. The summer of 1971 saw him land The Derby, Eclipse, King George Vi & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, before his autumn victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He remains the only horse to win all four races in the same year. Brigadier Gerard (1972) – The best British racehorse of the 20th century, Brigadier Gerard won 17 of his 18 starts. He was not at home on the soft ground for his victory in the 1972 Eclipse, but outstanding courage was one of his many attributes and he dug deep to deny Gold Rod by a length. Sadler’s Wells (1984) – A thoroughly tough and honest performer, the 1984 Eclipse was one of three Group 1 successes for Sadler’s Wells. The final of Vincent O’Brien’s five Eclipse winners, Sadler’s Wells went on to even greater heights as a stallion, being crowned the leading sire in Britain and Ireland a record 14 times. Pebbles (1985) – Although winner of the 1000 Guineas as a three year old in 1984, Pebbles took her form to another level the following year. Her facile Eclipse victory over Rainbow Quest, the first ever for a filly, preceded an equally imperious display in the Champion Stakes before she created history by becoming the first British-trained winner at the Breeders’ Cup in the USA.
Dancing Brave (1986) – Victorious in the 2000 Guineas before an arguably unlucky second in The Derby, Dancing Brave got back on track with a stunning Eclipse success in a season that saw him go on to take the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Nashwan (1989) – The summer of 1989 was all about Nashwan. After taking the 2000 Guineas and Derby, he was unstoppable in the Eclipse as he came home five lengths in front.
Nashwan
Giant’s Causeway (2000) – Nicknamed “The Iron Horse” and the first of Aidan O’Brien five Eclipse winners to date, Giant’s Causeway’s Eclipse victory was the second in a streak of five straight Group 1 victories. With regular jockey Michael Kinane injured, George Duffield was in the saddle and enjoyed his biggest career victory, aged 53.
Giant's Causeway
Sea The Stars (2009) – Successful in the 2000 Guineas and The Derby, Sea The Stars followed up in the Eclipse before going on to win the Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He swept the board at the 2009 Cartier Racing Awards.
Enable
Enable (2019) – Enable had already won seven Group 1 races before lining up in the 2019 Eclipse, including the 2017 Oaks as well as as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in both 2017 and 2018. Her Eclipse success was significant as it was her sole Group 1 victory at 10 furlongs.

RUN OVER ONE MILE, TWO FURLONGS
SIR MICHAEL STOUTE HAS TRAINED SIX WINNERS OF THE RACE The Coral-Eclipse has a rich history, with some of racing’s greats landing the spoils to cement their place in racing folklore. Vincent O’Brien’s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Sadler’s Wells was the only three-year-old in a nine-runner field for the 1984 renewal of the Coral-Eclipse. He was sent into the lead on the turn for home and showed a willing attitude in the closing stages to hold off the pursuit of the filly Time Charter and win by a neck. He would go on to become one of the greatest stallions of the modern era siring the likes of Galileo, Montjeu and High Chaparral. Regarded by many as the most unlucky Derby runner-up in the history of the race, Dancing Brave showed just how good he was when defeating two top-class rivals in Triptych and Teleprompter in 1986. He stretched clear in the closing stages in the hands of Greville Starkey to win by four lengths at the line. He subsequently went on to win the King George at Ascot before sprinting down the outside to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. The ‘Iron Horse’ Giant’s Causeway produced one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the Coral-Eclipse when getting the better of Sir Michael Stoute’s Kalanisi in 2000. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old was headed inside the final furlong but rallied gamely under George Duffield to get back up on the line and win by a head. A winner of no less than six Group 1s, he was never out of the first two in thirteen starts. One of only a few horses to complete The Derby – Coral-Eclipse double in the same season and but for being beaten on his racecourse debut as a two-year-old, Sea The Stars would have retired unbeaten. He was sent off the 4/7 favourite here at Sandown Park in 2009 but had to work hard for his success as he was challenged by Aidan O’Brien’s Rip Van Winkle inside the final furlong. The pair drew well clear of the third and John Oxx’s colt found a little extra close home to win with a length to spare.

PLAY SMARTER
None can be ruled out in a fascinating Eclipse yet it’s hard to side against VADENI who was a sparkling winner of the Prix du Jockey Club and can reward connections’ decision to supplement him for £50 000 in the week. Bay Bridge saw his winning spree ended at Royal Ascot but shouldn’t be written off provided ground conditions remain with some ease, while high-class miler Native Trail can’t be discounted now he steps up in trip and it would come as no surprise to see Mishriff bounce back.

PLAY SMARTER
Several in with a shout but the vote goes to CHAIRMAN. Freddie & Martyn Meade’s charge has improved in each of his 4 starts this year, and with further progress not out of the equation, he’s fancied to complete the hat-trick with William Buick an eye-catching jockey booking. Bottom-weight Le Forban is less exposed than most so he’s put forward as the main threat, while Aldhaja and Forest Falcon could also have a say in proceedings.
