Saudi Cup 2020

Page 1

Saturday 29 February 2020 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

It is with pleasure that I welcome everyone here today to the inaugural running of The Saudi Cup raceday. Saudi Arabia has never before seen a day of sport to rival this one. Over the course of the next eight races we will set a new benchmark in international racing in our country and we thank all those here today who share in our vision and came with us on our journey. The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia has a remit to promote and grow Saudi Arabian horse racing, both on a domestic and an international scale, and that is an adventure we begin today, together. We know that we could not do this alone and we are gratified by the levels of support and encouragement we have received from the domestic and international racing community. We have introduced the country’s first turf track and implemented a number of new procedures and processes that bring racing operations at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in line with the best in the world. Yet as well as being a starting point for the future of our sport, this raceday anchors us to our past. The equine heritage of Saudi Arabia is well documented through our literature, art and poetry and we are pleased to honour the traditions and values of our forefathers through this modern medium. We hope that today we offer a stage equal to the magnificent animals that will compete on it and we invite everyone here, and the millions watching at home, to enjoy a very special day of racing. TRAINER IN FOCUS

Charlie Appleby has been at the centre of the powerful Godolphin operation for a number of years.

been particularly fruitful for Appleby, with back-to-back successes in the Prix Marcel Boussac with Wuheida and Wild Illusion, followed by the latter winning the 2018 renewal of the Prix de l’Opera.

Having spent 15 years working as a head lad and assistant trainer, Charlie was given a key role in the organisation with his rise to trainer in 2013. Training out of Moulton Paddocks, Charlie sent out his first Group 1 winner in November 2013, with the success of Outstrip in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

A key horse for Charlie was Masar, a beautiful chestnut who captured the Epsom Derby in 2018. A high-class juvenile, he progressed well under the supervision of Appleby, and under a fine ride from William Buick Masar became the first horse to win the Derby in the Godolphin blue, with Appleby becoming the first trainer to win the Derby for Godolphin and landing his first Classic as a trainer in the process.

His first home success at the highest level came when Charming Thought took a competitive renewal of the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, and further success followed on the big stage the following year when Space Age took the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot.

2018 proved to be a fruitful year for Appleby, with the talented juvenile Quorto landing three races as a two-year-old, including the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh, another Group 1 for Appleby. He hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since 2018, but the emergence of another star juvenile in Pinatubo has kept the racing public eagerly awaiting his return.

His successes overseas have been key to Charlie’s Group 1 tally so far. He’s saddled top level winners in Canada and Australia, highlighted with success with Cross Counter in the 2018 Melbourne Cup. France has 12

OBAIYA CUP 2020

Once a multiple champion jockey on Arabians, Phil Collington has since become a champion trainer of them too. Now in his fifth season, Newmarket based Collington has two horses entered in the Obaiya, Medhaaf Athbah and Mashhur Al Khalediah, both for Athbah Stud. He is no stranger to the Gulf States, having worked in Dubai with former top UK Arabian trainer Gill Duffield and is now a regular in Saudi Arabia.

“Initially we’d come out for the Prince Sultan Cup

In November, en route to Saudi Arabia, Mehdaaf Athbah won on the Dirt in Belgium, whilst Mashhur Al Khalediah won the Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi, giving Collington his first Group 1PA win. His assistant Barry Adams has been overseeing the horses in Saudi Arabia since they arrived,

Both horses ran in the Equestrian Club Cup at Riyadh on February 8. Mehdaaf Athbah and Eyquem finished second in the 1800m contest to the locally trained Mutwakel Al Khalediah, with Mashhur Al Khalediah and Olivier Peslier only sixth. Collington was not disappointed saying: “Mashhur had not run since November and

They’re the strongest of the home team.”

Collington certainly thinks his horses are hard to split, as despite Mashhur Al Khalediah’s Group 1 PA win he says: “Mehdaaf must be respected, he’s proven on Dirt and he’s run three times since he arrived so is race fit. I wouldn’t like to say that Mashhur will beat him, he may well do, but the other horse is very strong and in form.” Considering the local challengers Collington says: “Mutawakel Al Khalediah is four and seems 35

JOCKEY IN FOCUS

James Doyle is one of the most highly regarded jockeys in the world. Over the past few years he has achieved some great wins on some fantastic horses, however things haven’t always been this simple for the 31-year-old.

Doyle was back on the racing map and soon the winners began to flow. Cityscape gave Doyle his biggest win over at Meydan in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free. This was a sign of things to come, and in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot he achieved his first Group 1 success in Britain when narrowly getting up through a brilliant ride on Al Kazeem. James has enjoyed considerable success when riding overseas and is a regular feature at Meydan in the build up to the Dubai World Cup Carnival. He gave Jungle Cat a peach of a ride to win the Al Quoz Sprint back in 2018, when he also enjoyed Group 1 success aboard Blair House in the Jebel Hatta. Jungle Cat and Doyle formed a formidable partnership in 2018, with the pair taking advantage of a trip to Australia and winning the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. Doyle conquered Canada with new ally Old Persian, winning the 2019 renewal of the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes, staged over a mile and a half at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto.

success and in 2014 he became one of the retained riders for Sheikh Mohammed’s operation. Recently he has ridden some extremely successful horses to Grade 1 victories, notably in 2017, which threw up some fantastic winners for Doyle as he won the St James’s Palace Stakes on Barney Roy and then the Gold Cup on Big Orange for Michael Bell and the Gredley family. A few years later Blue Point gave him a quick-fire double of Group 1 victories when he became the first horse since Choisir to win Royal Ascot’s two big weight-for-age sprint races. He won the King’s Stand in game fashion and then followed it up four days later to win the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, before being retired to stud.

TRAINER IN FOCUS

Steve Asmussen has long been regarded as one of the leading American trainers and was recognised for his achievements when being inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2016. Asmussen’s first win in a Triple Crown race came in 2007 with the great Curlin. The son of Smart Strike finished third in the Kentucky Derby, but then went on to reverse the form with Derby-winner Street Sense in the Preakness. JOCKEY IN FOCUS

Soumillion has an illustrious racing pedigree. Born in Belgium in 1981, he is the son of retired jumps jockey Jean-Marc Soumillion. His passion for horse racing did not take long to develop, and he began riding as an apprentice for Cedric Boutin at a young age. He learnt his trade at Moulin A Vent, a renowned riding school for training French jockeys. His first win followed shortly after he began riding for Boutin, in the shape of 75/1 chance Bruni.

Peslier, paving the way for Soumillion to become understudy to Peslier at Fabre’s yard. It didn’t take long for Soumillion to establish himself as a top rider in France. By 2001 he had already won two Classics in France, the Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud aboard Mirio and the Prix du Jockey Club while riding Anabaa Blue. His early success was to continue as he was blessed by another piece of good fortune, when Gerald Mosse went to ride in Hong Kong. This created a vacancy, as the Aga Khan needed a new jockey to ride his powerful selection of horses. Soumillion was top of the list as his ability was no secret, and soon he was rewarded with the great Zarkava giving Soumillion an unbeaten seven race streak. Zarkava was a legend in
