JOHN SMITH’S DAY 2020 F E A T U RING
THE 61ST JOHN SMITH’S CUP
Welcome Just a week after we last raced, we are pleased to welcome top flight thoroughbreds to the Knavesmire once again, it is just such a shame that, for understandable reasons, we are not yet able to also welcome the return of racegoers and supporters. However, I do hope that you are able to follow the action from afar, whether that’s on the television or a mobile device. I do hope you enjoy the high quality and compelling eight race card featuring one of the most competitive and famous handicaps of the season. In this most unusual year of race planning, at least we host some familiar contests, albeit a week later than originally planned. Every summer since 1960, racegoers have tried to solve what is still the most ticklish of middle distance handicaps in the John Smith’s Cup itself. Good luck to all connections including to those of the two most recent champions, Pivoine (2019) and Euchen Glen (2018) who seek to join a rare club of multiple winners as only Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ’86) hold this honour. We’ll know if the peony (I’m assured that’s the translation of Pivoine from the French) has bloomed this year around 2.32pm. The team from John Smith’s have been such fantastic supporters of racing at York with their backing of this famous raceday, their unflinching support in these challenging times is hugely appreciated. Please raise a glass to them as you toast the winners of the three contests that carry their name today. Though a considerably more recent addition to the programme, the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes has fast become a regular stop for the real speedsters of the game. The fastest horse of two seasons ago returns, owned and trained locally, Alpha Delphini, proved he was the quickest thoroughbred on the Knavesmire of 2018, when winning the Group One Coolmore Nunthorpe but only just! After an agonising review by the Judge, the then seven year old got the verdict ahead of the Michael Dods trained, Mabs Cross. Fortunately, the County Durham yard also saw Group One honours later that year, in Paris. Absent through injury for over a year, will today bring more triumph to the hero of 2018? The recently upgraded Group 3, John Smith’s Silver Cup, is likely to attract stayers with an eye on the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 22 August or even the Lexus Melbourne Cup come November; so have your notebooks handy around 1.58pm. As well as taking seven of the ten races on the opening day of our season last Thursday, Yorkshire based trainers and jockeys have reached several milestones over the last few weeks. John Quinn, David O’Meara, PJ Macdonald and David Allan have all joined the “1,000 winners” club since the resumption of racing and we send them our congratulations. In addition, horses owned, trained and ridden by people based in the White Rose County, have landed huge prizes across the country at the major festivals since 1 June, serving to illustrate the strength of talent, both equine and human, on our doorstep. We hugely appreciate the support of Heineken UK, William Hill and the European Breeders’ Fund for their races today, and of course, remain grateful for the support of owners and connections in sending their horses. For now I hope you enjoy the racing on ITV or Racing TV, it bares repeating, that we look forward to the day when we can welcome our supporters back to the Knavesmire. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

1 THE FASTEST HORSE OF 2018 RETURNS Owned and trained locally, Alpha Delphini proved he was the quickest horse on the Knavesmire in 2018, but only just! After an agonising review by the Judge, the then seven-year-old got the verdict ahead of the Michael Dods-trained Mabs Cross. CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you watch from wherever you can, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

JOHN SMITH’S CUP MEMORIES PASTERNAK A RARE TREAT FOR YORK PUNTERS
First run in 1960, and now the longest commercial sponsorship in British Racing, the John Smith’s Cup has had everything. The first year the winning jockey, Norman McIntosh, carried just 7 stone to win on Fougalle, Dick Hern trained six winners including the second and third year winners and in 1991 the world first heard of a certain young jockey named Francis Norton when he rode Halkopous to victory. But it has so often been a race which, fiercely competitive as you’d expect for the money, has left the bookies in ‘we’ve never had it so good’ land. Since 2012 when 33/1 shot Kings Warrior became the longest priced winner in recent decades, five of the subsequent seven winners have returned a double figure SP. Only one outright favourite, the Irish raider Mullins Bay with Kieren Fallon up, has landed the spoils since 2001. But when the punters get it right, the scenes of jubilation are always special - and very few will match what happened in 1997, when the defeat of a Frankie Dettori-ridden favourite in a major Saturday televised Saturday handicap cost the bookies millions - and in the words of one of the winning connections “ripe for a trip to Sketchley”. That afternoon Dettori, with delicious irony, was riding a horse called Humourless for his then boss and mentor Luca Cumani. But up against them in the customary full field was Pasternak, owned by a group headed by the Founding Editor of the Racing Post, Graham Rock. Like the man waiting for a Bishopric it was a case of ‘long time no see’ about the horse who had scrambled home from a horse called Obelos in a big field in a low-grade Knavesmire handicap the previous October. Pasternak’s trainer, Sir Mark Prescott
18
Successful jockey, George Duffield
Pasternak
The biggest plus in punters’ eyes about the four-year-old were those five words which have been sending fear and trembling in bookmakers’ minds for decades: trained by Sir Mark Prescott. In the build-up hours the world and his wife wanted to be on, the horse’s price collapsed faster than many an England cricket team and he was down to 13/2 as the race got under way. Clive Brittain’s Secret Aly made much of the running, with Dettori, in Sheikh Mohammed’s silks, as was Fergal Lynch on the other market leader, Sir Michael Stoute’s Komi, never sighted. Just over a furlong out George Duffield went for home and by the time he crossed the line the queues at the pay-out were rivalling Harrods on sale morning, the second home, Najm Mubeen, having thrown away his chance by displaying the most dramatic piece of hanging at the track since Dick Turpin to go down by half a length. It was the most emphatic ‘Punters 1-0 Bookies’ you will ever see. And no surprise when Sir Mark and Mr Duffield returned to duly stage an encore with Foreign Affairs in 2001 he was sent off the 5/2 favourite! Hands up, too, all those who played up their Pasternak winnings when just three months later he demolished a 36-runner field to land the Cambridgeshire. This is a race with so many memories - and it has been a delight in recent years to see jockeys like Thomas Brown, Ali Rawlinson and last year the hugely impressive Rob Hornby claim the big prize. Pasternak was special, but beware the stats as so often in recent years it’s been a race that comes with a wealth warning for punters. By Mike Vince, first published on sportinglife.com

RACE DESCRIPTION The first contest this afternoon that is also part of that Pattern pyramid, actually the highest in quality of the day, being a Group 3. This race is open to 3-y-o+ horses and is over a trip of fourteen furlongs. KNAVESMIRE TIP Communique put a modest run at Ascot behind him when second in Group 2 company at Newmarket recently and would be dangerous if allowed an uncontested lead for Mark Johnston. The tactics on Universal Order will probably be the exact opposite, given that he was delivered late to score at HQ last month, but this can go to MOONLIGHT SPIRIT. He drops in trip/class, handles varying ground, and represents the in-form Charlie Appleby, so should prove tough to beat.

The 61st John Smith’s Cup
FACT FILE:
Distance 1m 2f 88y
Prize money £60,000
CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY? HAVE THERE
The John Smith’s Cup has been sponsored by John Smith’s Brewery since its inauguration in 1960, making it the longest running commercial sponsorship in flat racing.
BEEN ANY WHAT WAS MULTIPLE THE LARGEST WINNERS? FIELD? The new supersize stalls purchased last season means a field of 22 today, only done previously in millennium year. The smallest came in 1969 & 1982 when only 6 participants lined up.
Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ‘86). Prominent was also third twice. Five others have won the race and been placed: Town And Country, Halkopous, Mr Confusion, Pasternak & Flying Clarets. Pivoine is back again this year to try to join that exclusive club of dual winners, along with the 2018 champion, Euchen Glen.
DOES SEX MATTER?
Flying Clarets
Yes, as only one mare, Flying Clarets (‘08), has won the race since Nortia was victorious in only the third running of the race. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the females have opted out this year.
IS AGE IMPORTANT? Most definitely. Only 4 six-year-olds and over have been successful - Raccolto (‘63), Farm Walk (‘68), My Swanee (‘69) and the 2016 winner, Educate, who broke a 47-year losing streak for the older horses. The 2017 victor, Ballet Concerto, returned to trend by boosting the 4-y-o total, a highlight of a sadly too short career, while the last two winners, Euchen Glen and Pivoine, struck another blow for the five-year-olds. Since 1978 the breakdown is as follows: Three-year-olds - 14 (two dead-heated in 1987!) Four-year-olds - 17 Five-year-olds - 11 Seven-year-olds - 1 So Nicholas T has the stats against him, aged 8. 28
Ballet Concerto
LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Major Dick Hern
Major Dick Hern won the race 6 times with Proud Chieftain, Nortia, Bold Pirate, Town And Country, Bedtime and Straight Man. Of the current crop of trainers Richard Fahey leads the way with three previous victories but the Musley Bank maestro isn’t represented this year. William Haggas recorded a brace of victories with Green Destiny in ‘11 and Danchai in ‘13 - Desert Icon and Sinjaari fly the Somerville Lodge flag today. Sir Michael Stoute also has two winners of the race to his name and bids to make it three with Solid Stone this afternoon.
LEADING RIDER? Geoff Baxter, Willie Carson and Tony Ives have each won the race three times but all are a longtime retired. Of those riding today, James Doyle (Caradoc), and Rob Hornby (Pivoine) are both looking for their second success. It would be a nice story if Cieren Fallon could land the spoils on Great Example to give the Fallon family a second victory in the race 15 years after father, Kieren, landed the race in 2005 on the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mullins Bay.
LONGEST WINNING DISTANCE? Halkopous won by 7 lengths in 1991. The shortest followed a dead-heat between Brave Dancer and Wolsey in 1987. Both horses finished second but were placed first in the Stewards’ Room when Knockando was demoted due to interference.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? John Smith’s, based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire has been the highest selling ale brand in the UK since the mid-1990s. John Smith’s Extra Smooth and Original are produced at Tadcaster, as well as a range of Heineken products including Kronenbourg 1664 and Newcastle Brown Ale. With a 3.8 million hectolitre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE? Quite well since the turn of the millennium. Richard Fahey has won it three times (Vintage Premium (02), Charlie Tokyo (07) & Flying Clarets (08)) whilst David Barron (Sirvino (09)) and Karl Burke (Achilles (99)) have also added to the tally. Yorkshire is well represented in this year’s contest, with Tim Easterby, David O’Meara, Roger Fell, Nigel Tinkler and Mark Johnston all saddling a runner in a bid for the 61st John Smith’s Cup.

The John Smith’s Cup (Heritage Handicap) One Mile, Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 55 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A handicap by conditions but famous enough to have attracted some who were good enough to compete at the Pattern level. The quality and history of this race is further acknowledged as it is categorised as a Heritage Handicap. If you crack this one you’ll deserve to be toasted in the sponsor’s brew by your friends. Why not take advantage of the high-quality television pictures to make your assessment based on how they look in the Parade Ring, just before they head out onto the track.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A very competitive renewal of this contest but the marginal preference is for AFAAK, who caught the eye when finishing seventh in the Hunt Cup on his seasonal return last month. The son of Oasis Dream is only 2lb higher than when winning that race in 2019, which means that he is 3lb lower then when fifth in this race 12 months ago. Caradoc was progressive last year and he may improve for his recent effort at Epsom, while Solid Stone and Fifth Position are others with strong form claims. The shortlist is completed by Desert Icon, Harrovian and Pivoine.

The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes (Listed Race) Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) See page 55 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION More “black type” on offer in a Listed contest which means it is a quality contest, so again a part of the Pattern pyramid, Listed (as here), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. Open to horses of both sexes, aged 3 and older however racing recognises that the younger horses and indeed female horses are likely to be at a different stage of their development, so their weights start from a lower point; as an example three-year-old colt Aberama Gold carries less weight than the former Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes winner, Alpha Delphini, who is now aged 9; with 3-y-o filly, Al Raya, less burdened than either of her male rivals. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; locally trained, El Astronaute, is one of several that has both initials.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: COPPER KNIGHT (IRE) Trainer: Tim Easterby Jockey: David Allan Age/Weight: 5-9-1 Runners: 8 SP: 2/1F Prominent throughout, Copper Knight gave trainer Tim Easterby a second victory in this contest after Hamish McGonagall won in 2012. KNAVESMIRE TIP l’Abbaye third EL ASTRONAUTE looked on good terms with himself when making a winning return to action (from Tarboosh) in Listed company at Doncaster and is expected to give it his best shot on the front end once again. Que Amoro beat Moss Gill (second) in a valuable three-year-old handicap here last term and recently struck in Listed company against her own sex at Ayr. This is tougher against the boys, though, and 2018 Nunthorpe winner Alpha Delphini and Equilateral, who chased home Battaash in the King’s Stand before changing ownership and running in the July Cup, bring genuine class to the table.

The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed ‘Reserves’ which has been published in The Racing Calendar and which also appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Internet site www.racingadmin.co.uk. Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The British Horseracing Authority has modified the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entries Code and the Division of Races section of the Race Administration Code of the Rules of Racing for the purposes of this race.
