SUMMER SUNDAY 2020 F E A T U RING
SUMMER
THE WILLIAM HILL S T A K E S ( G R O U P 3)
Welcome Just twenty-four hours after we last raced, we are pleased to be helping the racing economy by staging the third of our ‘behind closed doors’ fixtures. Whilst we are delighted to welcome over 100 racehorses and their riders, even some of their trainers and owners, it is just such a shame that, for understandable reasons, we are not yet able to also welcome the return of racegoers and supporters. However, I do hope that you are able to follow the action from afar, whether that’s on the television or a mobile device. I do hope you enjoy the competitive eight-race card. The William Hill Summer Stakes is always a top quality Group Three contest for speedy fillies and mares. We are delighted to welcome one of the world’s best jockeys back to York, as Ryan Moore joins us for the first time this season to partner Jovial for Sir Michael Stoute. She is hoping to go one better than her dam Joyeuse who was just shaded by Ladies Are Forever (missing out by a head) in this race in 2014. In the well-known colours of Lord Lloyd Webber, the defending Champion, Royal Intervention, is back for Ed Walker and her jockey today, Richard Kingscote, will be hoping for an extra present Happy Birthday Richard. Less familiar to York regulars will be the other pattern contest of the day, the Listed William Hill King Charles II Stakes; this seven furlong contest for three year olds is usually run on the Rowley Mile in mid May, but has attracted a quality looking field for its delayed trip North. A progressive winner might look at the Group Two Sky Bet City of York Stakes back here on Saturday 22nd August. We are hugely appreciative of the support of the William Hill and the European Breeders’ Fund for their backing, both today and elsewhere this season, and of course, for the support of owners and connections in sending their horses. For now I hope you enjoy the racing on ITV or Racing TV. We look forward to the day when we can welcome our supporters back to the Knavesmire. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A winner at 8-1 at Newmarket over 1m 2f (soft) on his racecourse debut in October last year, beating Princess Bride by 5l. He couldn’t have been much more impressive there and this looks to be a nice starting point for this three-year-old, who did hold a Derby entry. Official BHA Rating - SP: 2-1

Full brother to East, won twice at 6f and 7f including a Group 3 race. Cost 400,000 euros as a yearling and from a family that this trainer knows well, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he showed some ability, especially given that this handler introduces nice types here. Official BHA Rating - SP: 16-1

Placed once in two starts. Finished 5l behind Chares when fourth of 5 at 33-1 on his latest outing at Kempton over 1m in March. Owner: Mr Nurlan Bizakov Trainer: Roger Varian, Newmarket
3 9-2 (58.1) (4)

Placed in both starts. Beaten 1 1/4l by Al Zaraqaan when second of 10 at 10-3 on his latest outing at Doncaster over 1m 2f (good to firm) last month. Seemed to step forward from his debut there, trying turf for the first time and upped in trip, but simply bumped into one. Official BHA Rating 81 SP: 9-2

Placed in both starts. Third of 12 behind Matthew Flinders beaten 2 1/4l at 7-2 on his latest outing at Doncaster over 1m 2f (good to firm) last month. He is typically well related wearing these colours but seems unlikely to reverse that form with Matthew Flinders. Official BHA Rating 81 SP: 10-1

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York race-course team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Gimcrack Stakes in late August and the Listed 6F Garrowby Stakes in September. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

The William Hill Summer Stakes
FACT FILE:
Distance Six furlongs
Prize money £40,000
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS HAVE ANY RACE?
The William Hill Summer Stakes was first run in 1996 when it was a Listed contest for fillies and mares aged three and above. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2003.
WINNERS SCALED WHO WAS THE EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS? FIRST WINNER? Carranita won the first renewal for trainer Bryn Palling and jockey Tim Sprake.
Serious Attitude won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes during her juvenile season and after her win here went on to land another Group 1 in Canada.
The 2004 winner Tante Rose was arguably the classiest as she won the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup two months after victory here.
WHAT IS THE FASTEST TIME FOR THE RACE? Reg Bond with his star mare
That honour falls to the Reg Bond owned Ladies Are Forever who recorded a time of 1min 9.18secs in 2011. She also ran the second fastest time of 1min 9.30secs in 2014.
ANY OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS? Theann became the first overseas-trained winner when landing the spoils for Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan in 2007. In 2012 the prize went to Germany when Gracia Directa was partnered to victory by Robert Winston for the Hamburg-based trainer Dominik Moser. With the home team looking so strong this year and the global pandemic creating travel issues, there are no overseas challengers in this year’s renewal of the race. 28
Gracia Directa
LEADING TRAINERS?
Geoff Oldroyd
Geoff Oldroyd won this race three times in recent years courtesy of his flying filly Ladies Are Forever. Toby Balding managed to win the race twice with Palace Affair in 2001 & 2002 whilst Richard Hannon Snr also won the race twice with Nanoushka in 1998 and Lucky Spin in 2005. Handlers with a runner today who have already won the race include last year’s winner, Ed Walker, who saddles Royal Intervention in an attempt to win this contest in back-to-back years (also represented by Sunday Star) and the 2016 winner, Eric Alston (Ridge Ranger) who is represented by Maid In India.
LEADING RIDER? Only two jockeys have won this race more than once. Steven Carson partnered Palace Affair to back-to-back victories whuile Paul hanagan’s winning ride last year was his second after also partnering Rose Blossom in 2010. Daniel Tudhope, Ryan Moore and Jason Hart are amongst today’s riders who have already won the race once in the past, but if there is a new name added to the Roll Of Honour, they will join the likes of Kevin Darley, the late Pat Eddery and Silvestre De Sousa.
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
In 2014, Ladies Are Forever achieved the quite remarkable feat of winning this race three times. Interestingly, for each of her three victories in 2011, 2013 & 2014 she was ridden by a different jockey - Silvestre De Sousa, Graham Lee & Danny Tudhope respectively. She didn’t take part in 2012!
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the most trusted brands in the marketplace, attracting millions of customers from around the world.
Steven Carson
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Initially not all that well. Tim Easterby won it with Hot Tin Roof in 2000 but we had to wait until 2010 for another Yorkshire-trained winner when Rose Blossom scored for Richard Fahey. Since, then Geoff Oldroyd has boosted the tally thanks to the success of Ladies Are Forever. It falls to one of William Haggas (born in Skipton), Kevin Ryan, Karl Burke or John Quinn to defend the home county’s honour today.
They now bring that expertise to the Retail betting shops here at York, which we all look forward to seeing open once again.

RACE DESCRIPTION The William Hill Summer Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1. In the search for competition, this race is only open to three-year-old and older fillies and mares. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength of 3-y-os; unusually 30% of the field today are from the classic generation, so notice how Jovial is one to benefit. Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP KEEP BUSY only found the talented Art Power too good at Royal Ascot last time out and could continue her progress here for John Quinn. The three-year-old holds an entry in the Group 1 Flying Five in Ireland in September, and must be held in high regard at home. Jovial was second in Listed company at Haydock last month and the third won in France last week, while Shades Of Blue drops from Group 1 company and is also taken seriously.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you watch from wherever you can, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.
