THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI GARROWBY STAKES (LISTED RACE)

Welcome A very warm welcome to our only Sunday from wherever you are following the action. In a challenging year for so many people, we hope the participants in the Listed Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Garrowby Stakes and other six fascinating contests, can bring some joy into our lives. In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels. The team at Racing TV will bring you all the contests. Those choosing to have a flutter will be able to follow their fancy through their betting accounts with most major bookmakers, including today’s partner, Sky Bet - here. We are incredibly grateful that the connections of the horses that have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. We hope those that are with us enjoy their Sunday Lunch in the socially distanced Ebor Restaurant. The performances of Ghaiyyath, Love and Battaash in our three Group One contests last month, saw them form the medal positions in the current Cartier rankings, each heading their respective divisions. The victor of the Juddmonte International is now rated as the best horse in the world, as Charlie Appleby and Team Godolphin plan the balance of his campaign. The unstinting support of Al Basti Equiworld, Sky Bet, Little Green Rascals, the Marshall family and the European Breeders Fund over this challenging period is hugely appreciated, they are all longstanding sponsors and their backing is much appreciated. In our feature race, some major southern operations have declared fancied runners, for example Simon Crisford has headed north double handed with Jash set to be partnered by Jim Crowley, a rider fresh from achieving 2,000 career winners (five of them during the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival); as well as Aristocratic Lady unbeaten in her three runs this year. The impressive winner of the 2019 Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes, Mum’s Tipple, returns over course and distance for Richard Hannon. A stiff northern challenge is fronted by defending champion Dakota Gold for Michael Dods, and recent Chester winner, Judicial for Julie Camacho. The racing we have been able to stage this afternoon, with prize money above the new minimum values, is only possible due to the steadfast support of our sponsors, partners, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing from the comfort of your armchair. Stay safe. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

1st Race 1.00 The Sky Bet British EBF Novice Stakes (Plus 10 Race)

Distance: 5f 89y Race Type: Novice Prize Money: £11,500 Age: 2 Stalls: Centre

Five Furlongs About 89 Yards (1,000 metres) See page 47 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION We start the day off with a Novice, this race is limited to 2-y-o horses and is over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs. Those that have made a winning appearance already this season will carry additional (so called penalty) weight which is why Tom’s Reign Beau sits at the top of the tree. The fillies start with a lower burden, so Amazing Anna carries less than Tamaska. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Perhaps the advice of our expert panel on Racing TV will give you the answer.

KNAVESMIRE TIP MAMBA WAMBA has gone to close to winning on multiple occasions and that includes her half-length defeat in the Roses Stakes at the Ebor meeting here. The daughter of Mehmas was short of room at a crucial stage on that occasion and she is capable of gaining some compensation. Mcmanaman is another who performed well at Listed level when last seen and he could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Others to note are Inveigle, Tweet Tweet and Batraan.

At Saint Catherine’s we are doing everything we can to keep our patients, families, staff , volunteers and supporters safe at this difficult time. Our key clinical services are still running, which means that patients are still being cared for in the hospice and at home. However, in line with Government guidance and with safety paramount, we have taken the decision to reduce some face-to-face services and restrict visitors on site. Also, our hospice shops will be closed for the time being and we have postponed all

of our fundraising events that were planned during the next few months. Every decision being made is in the best interests of our patients, families, volunteers and staff. We need your continued support and help more than ever as we continue to pay and support all our members of staff – we appreciate every donation, every message and every offer of support.

See page 47 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Now for the first handicap of the day, this race is for 3-y-o+ horses over a mile and a quarter. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is an independent assessor who rates horses on their past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The opposite way around to golf, the best on past performance, will be the highest number, Anythingtoday and so will carry most weight. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; see how Archie Perkins qualifies on both counts.

KNAVESMIRE TIP DUESENBERG takes a big drop in class for Richard Fahey and is fancied to appreciate this step up in distance. The three-year-old has been dropped 4lb for his latest exertions, but should find this easier and showed plenty of potential as a juvenile. Thibaan got off the mark at the fourth attempt at Doncaster and could be better than his official figure. Scottish Summit claimed a deserved success at Redcar recently and is also noted.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York race-course team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Gimcrack Stakes in late August and the Listed 6F Garrowby Stakes in September. We would like to thank the countless people behind the scenes who have made racing possible once more. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Garrowby Stakes (Listed Race) Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 47 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our richest race is a part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land. Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is sharpened by the nuance that horses who have won this season in the top two divisions are excluded. What’s more, those with a win at either Group 3 or Listed level have to carry extra weight; hence the extra burden for defending champion, Dakota Gold, after Beverley success. However, despite the fine run of form for Aristocratic Lady, none of her wins were at this elevated level, so no penalty applies. Also note how the female horses start from a lower weight, see how Galadriel benefits. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Dakota Gold Trainer: Michael Dods Jockey: Connor Beasley Age/Weight: 5-9-2 Runners: 9 ran Price: 11/8F A third York victory of the season for the Michael Dods-trained sprinter, who was another to comfortably make most, this time under Connor Beasley.

KNAVESMIRE TIP JUDICIAL continues to improve as an eight-year-old and comes into this following a comfortable defeat of Major Jumbo in this grade at Chester last month. Julie Camacho’s stable star has to give weight all round, having also won a Group 3 at Newcastle in June, but he is currently at the top of his game and sets a tough standard for the opposition to beat. Dakota Gold returned to form in the Beverley Bullet and he warrants respect along with the unbeaten Starman.

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres) See page 47 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A rare type of race, made competitive by only being open to just 2-y-o horses, but with an added twist that one of their parents (sire=dad/dam=mum) had won a race over a distance of more than ten furlongs. Imagine a school sports day race limited to the offspring of just talented middle-distance runners and you can see how the gene pool is intended to create close competition. The broader intent is to encourage a wider pool of horses into becoming bloodstock, not leaving future generations simply to those who were successful over the shorter distances. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s pedigree or pin!

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Wyclif Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Harry Bentley Age/Weight: 2-9-8 Runners: 8 ran Price: 5/2 With a well-timed run from last-to-first, Wyclif held on gamely in the closing stages from Vega Magic to win the seven-furlong contest by a neck in a thrilling finish.

KNAVESMIRE TIP There are a few interesting newcomers in this line-up, namely Carter Cowboy, True Courage, Reams Of Love and Kentucky Kitten, but with experience under his belt, ATHERS will likely prove tough to beat. There was lots to like about his opening third over this trip at Doncaster and that form has been boosted with the fourth and fifth winning three races between them since. Normal improvement can see him open his account at the second attempt.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

5

34

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

TOP TRAINER AT YORK AWARD The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes!

2019 Champion: John Gosden

RACE DESCRIPTION Another ticklish handicap to solve, the twist is for 3-y-o horses only, rated 76-95, this time over six furlongs. The high handicap rating band of 76-95 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for “behind closed doors” cricketers at Old Trafford, a score of near 100 denotes a top performer). The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight, Troubador today. Perhaps take a close look at previous form on this going to find your winner.

KNAVESMIRE TIP BOMA GREEN ran with credit on his first start for 15 months when third at Chepstow last month and this lightly-raced gelding makes plenty of appeal now switching his attentions to handicap company. Benefit Street (second) and Many A Star (third) both performed well at Pontefract last month and the pair have to enter calculations once again, while recent Haydock scorer Royal Context is respected off a 5lb higher mark.

7th Race 4.10 The Sky Bet Apprentice Stakes One Mile About Four Furlongs (2,300 metres)

Distance: 1m 4f Race Type: Handicap Rating: 66-80 Prize Money: £11,300 Age: 4+ Stalls: Centre

See page 47 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Another handicap completes today’s card, your vital statistics are 4-y-o+, rated 66-80, going one and a half miles. An added dimension to the contest is that all the riders are still apprentices. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. So, follow the relative experience of George Rooke who partners Awesomedude or take the weight relief by supporting Zak Wheatley who rides Neitzsche. If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until our raceday on Friday 9 October.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Awesomedude arrives here on a five-timer and has been in great form for James Ferguson since the resumption of racing. He’s stepping back up from 1m2f but is proven over this longer trip and is expected to remain competitive. Narrow preference, though, is for BOLLIN JOAN, who is taken to shake off a 3lb rise for scoring over this distance at Ripon. Big runs from Firewater and Flood Defence would come as no surprise, while Ours Puissant has each-way claims.
