William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

Listen out for the New York Brass Band, boogie into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Mercier Champagne for just £43 a bottle; take a complimentary 360-degrees selfie, engage with the British Champions Series Fanzone however you enjoy your raceday, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day.

A very warm welcome to Ladies Day at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. Appropriately, with what looks to be fascinating renewals of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, the Sky Bet Lowther, the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes and our second European Breeders’ Fund backed fillies handicap as the last, all featuring fillies or mares, there are four races offering a record reward of nearly £1m, exclusively for connections of female horses.

The above four races combined with the valuable Goffs UK Harry Beeby Premier Yearling Stakes and the ultra-competitive £125,000 Clipper Logistics Stakes, offer action on the track that looks top quality. This made possible by both your attendance and the backing of our partners and sponsors – thank you all for that support.

Welcome Follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook @yorkracecourse 1

We are delighted that today is the second of three World Pool events in a ground-breaking partnership with the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool means any tote bet you have today will go into a larger deeper pool, smoothing pricing as racegoers at York today and those around the world bet into one single pool. We welcome our partners from World Pool to York. If you have a fancy for the Sky Bet Ebor then you’ll want to be at the Winner’s Enclosure for 11.30 today, as the live stalls draw is conducted. Significantly, it will also link the 22 good causes in the Sky Bet Ebor Community Sweepstake to their contender, see p52 for more details of this £46,000 charitable initiative.

We are delighted to be staging a second valuable race for two-year-olds, the Goffs UK Harry Beeby Premier Yearling Stakes with a prize pot of £250,000 This year is a special renewal as it honours Harry Beeby, a former Chairman and a leading figure in the bloodstock world, who sadly passed away last October The race has, in the past, showcased the talent of Wootton Bassett, the star colt that gave Malton trainer Richard Fahey his first Group One victory and is now a successful Coolmore stallion. So illustrious hoofprints for Dare To Hope to follow. This year the winning owner, as well as receiving the lion’s share of the £250,,000 prize fund, also receives a £40,700 free voucher for a “free horse” at next week’s Premier Yearling Sale as well as the trainer receiving free use of the Theault horse box opposite the winning post. If you want to find out more about buying a horse at next month’s sales then do drop into the Frankel Pavilion and speak to the team from Goffs. As today sees the running of the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes, we are proud of the set of wrought iron gates that serve as a permanent way of remembering him. They stand at the northern end of the course, near the statue of his most famous charge, Frankel who delivered that spellbinding win a decade ago In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the York Gin Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as The 8th Sign and the Potions Cauldron are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun! Remember, if you are with us again tomorrow, there is a special prize for “Strad Style” think yellow & black, chestnuts or violins!

The feature Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks offers record prize money of £500,000 and has attracted both the English (Tuesday) and Irish (Magical Lagoon) winners, taking on older thoroughbreds with proven Group One form, such as Alpinista and La Petite Coco. That makes it a contest of the best in Britain, Ireland and France, so I hope you enjoy this fabulous race As if that wasn’t enough, we have the Sky Bet Lowther, the richest Group 2 for juvenile fillies. With five horses from three different Yorkshire yards entered, it could see the home county’s handlers collecting a share of the record £250,000 (further boosted by the supplementary entry for Lady Hollywood) adding to yesterday’s victories for Kevin Ryan.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area. Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL (GROUP 1) Baaeed produced a performance that we won’t be forgetting in a hurry as he confirmed just how talented he is. Coming into the race all the talk was about the Shadwell owned four-year-old, who despite winning all his races to date was facing a new challenge up in trip. Up against him was globe trotting superstar and last year’s winner Mishriff, as well as this year’s 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail. Sent off 2/5, the racing public was confident he’d get the job done and like his father Sea The Stars, he duly obliged in quite taking style. He didn’t have things all his own way and High Definition made sure that it was a real test of stamina under Ryan Moore, who set fast early fractions. James Doyle sat a few lengths behind, keeping the leader firmly in his sights, while Native Trail headed the remainder. Sir Busker brought up the rear after he missed the break.

RESULT 1st Baaeed 2/5F 2nd Mishriff 4/1 3rd Sir Busker 100/1 16

RESULT 1st Deauville Legend 5/2F 2nd Secret State 3/1 3rd El Bodegon 10/1

Coming into the straight, Baaeed scythed through the field under a motionless Jim Crowley to quickly draw along side Mishriff, who had taken up the running after High Definition began to fade.

THE SKY BET GREAT VOLTIGEUR (GROUP 2) Deauville Legend came in for quite a bit of late money and duly obliged under Daniel Muscutt for the punters. Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien clearly had a game plan and bounced out the stalls well in a bid to make all. Aikhal was quite keen in the early stages and ultimately this would cost him come the finish. Godolphin second string Secret State was anchored in second by James Doyle and the two of them looked to be enjoying things a bit more after some disappointing performances this season The Ferguson duo were held up in midfield and came round the bend side by side Coming into the straight, long time back marker and second favourite Secret State began to make his move through the field and was one of the first to be asked for his effort by William Buick. Aikhal quickly began to fade entering the final two furlongs after his early exertions and El Bodegon took it up. He quickly drew a few lengths clear but stalking him in behind was stablemate Deauville Legend who looked to be travelling oh so smoothly. Daniel Muscutt nursed him into contention and once he got the daylight he needed, the pair quickly reeled in El Bodegon and Hollie Doyle. Secret State tried to go with him after making good headway but was ultimately couldn’t find that extra gear He continued to stay on, and the St Leger could be a good target for him. With Secret State and El Bodegon in the rear-view mirror, Deauville Legend quickly put the race to bed to win by an eased down 2 3/4 lengths. After the race Charlie Appleby confirmed that the St Leger could be on the agenda for the second Secret State while Deauville Legend looks set to head elsewhere for other big Autumn prizes

Despite some suggestions that the Arc could be on the table, it looks as though a trip to Ascot for QIPCO British Champions Day seems the more likely option and it’s hard to see what stops him from signing off in winning fashion.

Once he pressed go on Baaeed, the response was immediate and the two began to go further and further clear. To the eye he looked even more impressive than he had done previously and there is every chance this step up in trip has bought about even more improvement. Mishriff ended up finishing second while Sir Busker staged a miraculous recovery to finish in third ahead of Dubai Honour.

2. Trained in Ireland, I am the only horse to win the Darley Yorkshire Oaks to hail from the Emerald Isle and not be trained by an O’Brien in the last 10 years. By Teofilo, I was successful in the Irish 1000 Guineas and then again in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks after a lengthy break. If you’ve guessed me, can you guess who trained me? name the jockey?

I predominantly ride for Northern trainers and this year won the Sky Bet Ganton Stakes. Bonus point for anyone that can guess the horse!

Premier Yearling Stakes

Goffs are grateful to York Racecourse for agreeing to commemorate Harry Beeby with the renaming of today’s flagship race.

Harry was an iconic part of DBS, now Goffs UK, for many years having joined the fledgling company as a Partner in 1964, serving as DBS Managing Director from 1976 to 1998 and Chairman from 1988 to 2016 before being named Honorary President of Goffs UK in 2016, a title he held until his death last year

Goffs UK Harry Beeby

Throughout the 60s, 70s & 80s Harry shaped DBS into the vibrant Company that became Goffs UK working alongside co-founders Willie Stephenson and Ken Oliver, colleagues Mouse White and Michael Dale, and his successor as both Managing Director and Chairman, Henry Beeby. Harry brought a unique sense of family, enjoyment and welcome to the business and was also a much respected and world class auctioneer whilst he was a true innovator who was never afraid of trying something new as evidenced by his introduction of the Breeze-Up sales concept to Europe in 1977. In 2012 the TBA awarded him the Andrew Devonshire Award for services to the industry which acknowledged his contribution to the market place, largely ensuring there was a vibrant alternative to the market leader in the UK. In 1998 Harry and Henry introduced the Premier Yearling Stakes as a unique incentive to promote their Doncaster yearling sales. It was an instant hit, so much so that the Racing Post report on the inaugural running wrote “Move over Saatchi & Saatchi, it’s time you made way for Beeby & Beeby”.

Harry was immensely proud of the race and its record of producing a competitive event every year as well as acting as a stepping stone for several true stars like Acclamation, Dark Angel and Wootton Bassett. He attended every running until 2019 and always enjoyed the spectacle of the race as well as meeting clients and friends, many of whom were one and the same.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Official BHA Ratings

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

How

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE DOES THE RACE NAME COME FROM? IS IT A CLASSIC TRIAL?

The next obvious target following a big run in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes is the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Run over the same distance, eleven fillies since 1974 have added a Rowley Mile victory to their already impressive resumes Cry of Truth (1974), Pasty (1975), Devon Ditty (1978), Mrs Penny (1979), Dead Certain (1989), Queen’s Logic (2001), Carry On Katie (2003), Hooray (2010), Rosdhu Queen (2012), Tiggy Wiggy (2014) and 2018’s winner, Fairyland. Fairyland Criquette Head ANY OVERSEAS INTEREST? Criquette Head won the race four times for France in 1982, 1987, 1996 and 2009 and Pascal Bary (2007) and Philippe Sogorb (2013) added two more for our cross-channel cousins. Irish-trained fillies have won the race six times, courtesy of Dermot Weld (1977), Vincent O’Brien (1981 & 1990), Jim Bolger (1984) and Ger Lyons (2011). Aidan O’Brien finally broke his duck in this contest in 2018 as the smart sprinting filly, Fairlyland, held off The Mackem Bullet in a thriller The Emerald Isle is once again represented by Lady Tilbury for David Marnane and Matilda Picotte for Kieran Patrick Cotter They’ll be looking to give Ireland a seventh victory

WHY IS IT SPECIAL? As a Group 2 it is only one rung from the top of flat racing’s ladder

Distance Six furlongs (1,200m) Prize money £267,500 The Sky Bet Lowther Stakes FACT FILE:

Yes, many of the recent winners have gone on to run in the following year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas. Russian Rhythm was the last to complete the big-race double in 2002/03

WHERE NEXT?

It was named in memory of Hugh Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale It was established in 1946, and the inaugural running was won by Southernwood.

Tiggy Wiggy’s winning time of 1m 8.90s in 2014 was not only the fastest for this race but also smashed the six furlongs course record. In comparison, Soar’s victory in 2004 came in a time of 1m 15.90s exactly seven seconds slower. In her defence the ground was much softer that year With a very strong field lining up here today, the record could well be in jeopardy

LEADING RIDER? RECORD BREAKER

Since 1974, the prize has remained in Yorkshire just four times. However, in recent times, Yorkshire lead the way with three of the last four winners trained in the county Richard Fahey took the prize home to Malton in 2016 with Queen Kindly, while the trophy went to Middleham in 2017, after Mark Johnston’s Threading again boosted Yorkshire’s record in the race Karl Burke’s Living In The Past returned the trophy to Middleham in 2019 and he bids for another with Dramatised and Swingalong. Kevin Ryan is also well represented, Queen Me and Glenlaurel fly the flag for one of Yorkshire’s own. Maria Bramwell is sent out by David O’Meara to complete the white rose contingent.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Richard Hannon Senior leads the way with five victories courtesy of Enstone Spark (1977), Only Yours (1990), Niche (1992), Infamous Angel (2008) & Best Terms (2011). In his first season in sole charge Richard Hannon Junior added a sixth family winner with Tiggy Wiggy in 2014 and a seventh Hannon-trained champion could well be on the cards, the yard is represented by Miami Girl. Mick Channon has saddled four winners of this race, but also doesn’t have a runner in the race this time around. The first back to back wins since the inaugural two seasons would be the feat of Ismail Mohammed were Desert Illusion to score.

Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have recently extended our partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of a lucky thirteen races this week; including the Sky Bet Ebor Harry Carr, Ron Hutchinson, Richard Hughes & the much-missed Lester Piggott share the honour of having won the race three times but all are retired now. James Doyle has been on board two of the last five winners but isn’t due to ride in the race today. Therefore, the jockeys to watch out for are Daniel Tudhope and Ray Dawson, who will try to make it two wins today with Illustrating and Mawj respectively.

The Princess Margaret and Queen Mary Stakes, both run at Ascot over 6f and 5f respectively, have been the best pointers in recent years. If you were to favour one race then it would have to be the Princess Margaret Stakes with Enthused (2000), Russian Rhythm (2002), Soar (2004), Lady Of The Desert (2009), Besharah (2015) and Zain Claudette (2021) all having followed up their Ascot victory by winning this afternoon’s race. Living In The Past was also third in the Princess Margaret Stakes before winning here in 2019. Only the sixth from this year's renewal Glenlaurel lines up.

RECENT FORM With ten of the last sixteen winners of the Lowther Stakes having won on their most recent starts, it suggests that recent form is an important factor to consider. Interestingly, of the six who fail on this trend, four had achieved a top three finish and only Silk Blossom and Hooray completely missed out by each finishing 6th.

PREVIOUS WINNERS

Despite only Glenlaurel running in this year's Princess Margaret Stakes, the preference has to be with DRAMATISED She looked mightily impressive when romping home in the Queen Mary Stakes (the good trial) and should take all the beating here. The step up to six furlongs looks as though it won't be a problem and the Karl Burke stable has had success in this race before. The obvious contenders to chase her home would be Maria Branwell, who finished third in the Queen Mary Stakes and shaped as if this extra furlong would help Mawj finished second in the Albany and then went one better when winning the Duchess Of Cambridge at Newmarket. That form took a nice boost when Lezoo took him the aforementioned Princess Margaret Stakes and she could be the biggest threat. - LAST TEN RUNNINGS Year Winner Trainer Jockey SP Runners Time Going Zain Claudette Ismail Mohammed Ray Dawson 6/1 10 ran 1m 10.46s G Miss Amulet Ken Condon James Doyle 15/2 14 ran 1m 10.71s G/S Burke Daniel Tudhope 12/1 10 ran 1m 10.74s Aidan O'Brien Ryan Moore 6/4F 9 ran 1m 11.23s G/F Doyle 9/2 9 ran 1m 12.48s G/S Kindly Fahey Spencer 9/2 8 ran 1m 9.84s G/F Haggas Pat Cosgrave 11/1 9 ran 1m 11.87s G/S Wiggy Richard Hannon Richard Hughes 15/8F 9 ran 1m 8.90s Margarson Tom Queally 5/2J 9 ran 1m 10.58s G/F William Haggas Richard Hughes 9/2 10 ran 1m G/F

BETTING 2019's 12/1 winner, Living In The Past, joined Hooray, Best Terms and Besharah in causing a stir when landing the spoils at 11/1 in 2010, 2011 and 2015 respectively, but an average SP of just below 5/1 tells us that the market principals tend to dominate in this race. There have been three winning favourites in the last ten years and so it would seem prudent to focus on the more fancied runners, certainly those 12/1 or less, if this trend is to be believed.

G 2018 Fairyland

2016 Queen

2014 Tiggy

There is nothing to be gained in this area as in recent seasons there is a pretty even split of winning fillies which had already won over six furlongs and those that were winning over this trip for the first time.

37 The Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (Group 2) Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 93 for conditions of this race. RACE DESCRIPTION The Sky Bet Lowther Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 (like this one) and Group 1. Notice how the previous success at this level of Dramatised means she has an additional burden of 3lbs. This race is only open to 2yo fillies and is over a trip of six furlongs. A BIG

5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year we have plenty of horses that have won at the course and distance, Cruyff Turn, Orbaan and Ouzo could all put that good form to use.

1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Escobar, Shelir & Isla Kai.

THE CLIPPER LOGISTICS HANDICAP

Narrowing down the field of twenty declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is.

Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form. Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Tyrrhenian Sea is rated 105 is considered 1lb “better” than Rhoscolyn who is rated 104. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Tyrrhenian Sea should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Tyrrhenian Sea carries 1lb more than Rhoscolyn, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fifteen runners but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all twenty runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance? Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into. Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

This afternoon’s Clipper Logistics Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with twenty closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.

2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running aound a bend like for this one, they would lobby for the horse drawn with the shortest way home However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Most times , over the longer distance the pace of the race sorts out any benfit accrued from the bend. Perhaps What’s The Story can use this to his advantage.

4) GROUND If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Brunch is one who will enjoy a quicker surface. However Rhoscolyn wins have come on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.

3) DISTANCE Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Young Fire, Shining Blue and Revich have all won over today’s disrance

6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good to firm’ will be the description, the Tim Easterby-trained Cruyff Turn could well return to win the race in back-to-back year’s off only a 1lb higher mark. He should relish the ground and has already won once this season over the tirp.

The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.

Original prize fund: £500,000 Supplementary entry fee: £40,000 (deducted as if it were an original entry) (£6,250) Leaves a balance of £33,750

The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard. The prize money on offer at the Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.

The Juddmonte team consider that back to back wins at Longchamp in improving Pattern company, merits a roll of the dice for the Andre Fabre trained three-year-old. The other entrants at the same stage had paid £6,250 each, so this sum is transferred to the original pot of £500,000. The balance is then added to create a total prize fund of £533,750.

NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND

For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold. For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Juddmonte International closed for original entries on June 26th. However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners. If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium. In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks has risen because of one supplementary entry, with Raclette joining the field.

Coming up to date and Darley, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions.

Darley was founded in 1981 when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum purchased Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. It forms the bloodstock arm of an enthusiasm for racing that also created Godolophin (yes, the third foundation stallion) as the racing wing. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proven themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Dubai Millennium feel a weight of expectation on their withers. Some, like this track superstar only had a brief time to pass on their genes, so it is all the more poignant to enjoy the success of their progeny. Based at Dalham Hall, the success of this operation can be seen with Dubai Millennium’s greatest son, Dubawi. He landed Group 1s at two and three including successes in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Prix Jacques Le Marois during his Classic campaign. Since beginning his own stallion career in 2006, his reputation has continued to grow, becoming the fastest sire ever to reach 50 Group winners and has more Group winners than any other stallion at the same stage in their careers. Also standing at Dalham Hall Stud alongside Dubawi is Investec Derby winner, New Approach, who has already continued the family tradition by siring superstars of his own New Approach was a Champion two-year-old and a 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace winner at three, while Masar emulated his sire by winning the 2017 Derby. As a sign of the modern world, Darley are a global operation with their stallion stations in Ireland and France providing familiar names to European tracks.

Kildangan Stud in County Kildare plays host to another fine roster that has recently been boosted by Blue Point, a sprinter who came to prominence winning the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack here at York prior to four Group One victories. The late Shamardal, who won the 2005 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot at York, did stand there before he was lost in 2019, but his legacy lives on through the hundreds of classy offspring to have represented him. Golden Horn, who carries on the line of another great Darley stallion, Cape Cross, and Ghaiyyath are other Knavesmire heroes to stand under the Darley banner, the former at Dalham Hall and the latter at Kildangan Stud. Haras du Logis in Normandy also plays a vital role in the Darley story and hosts a raft of Group 1 winners such as Derby and Juddmonte International winner of 2007, Authorized who sired 2016 Derby winner Harzand. This year they are joined by five-time Group/Graded winner Flintshire. When considering the enthusiasm of their founder, and a roster that now includes Harry Angel, it is little wonder that they continue to produce racehorses of the highest order year after year.

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough.

Since the early ‘70s fillies trained in Ireland have had their fair share of success Paddy Prendergast won with Sarah Siddons in 1976 before Jim Bolger added another with Condessa in 1981. After a barren spell, John Oxx added further success with Key Change in 1996 before Aidan O’Brien secured back-to-back victories with Alexandrova & Peeping Fawn in 2006-2007. Jim Bolger made it an Irish hat-trick with Lush Lashes in 2008 and Aidan O’Brien added his third victory with Tapestry in 2014. Recent Irish domination continued in 2015 with victory for Jim Bolger’s Pleascach and Aidan O’Brien almost saddled the 1-2 in 2016 with the brilliant pair of Seventh Heaven and Found. Love and Snowfall gave him his sixth and seventh victories while Tuesday goes in search of his eighth. Lush Lashes

Obviously before 1971 there couldn’t have been as the race was only open to three-year-old fillies. But since then Only Royale (1993 & 1994) and Islington (2002 & 2003) have both secured back-to-back victories, while Enable won the race as both a three and five-year-old in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

The name ‘Oaks’ tends to lend its name to all top class races for fillies. The Yorkshire Oaks often features fillies which previously ran in the Oaks at Epsom. The first to achieve victory in both races was Brown Duchess in 1861, and the most recent was Enable in 2017 Will Magical Lagoon or Tuesday add a second Oaks to their CV?

IRISH RAIDERS?

The inaugural running in 1849 was won by Ellen Middleton, owned by the 2nd Earl of Zetland. However, the first winner of the race as we know it now was Magnificent Star in 1991.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

The 19th century trainer Matthew Dawson shares top spot with Sir Michael Stoute with nine winners each, but the master of Freemason Lodge doesn’t have a representative in the race today. Aidan O’Brien recorded consecutive wins with Love and Snowfall and the mantel now falls to Epsom Oaks winners Tuesday to try and give him yet another winner in the race and put him one behind leading trainer Sir Michael Stoute. RIDER?

Darley are one the world’s leading breeding and racing organisations. With operations around the globe including Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and Kildangan Stud in Ireland, Darley have stood some of racings most influential stallions including the likes of Dubawi, Cracksman, Harry Angel and Knavesmire champion, Ghaiyyath, to name just four. The legendary Fred Archer holds the record having won this race on 8 occasions. Of those jockeys around today, Frankie Dettori was top of the chart with four until Ryan Moore joined him after winning last year’s race on Snowfall. In the absence of Frankie, will Ryan Moore go a clear second when taking to the saddle on Tuesday?

TRAINERS Aidan O’Brien now has six wins in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, and with Tuesday of the seven runnners this afternoon hailing from his powerful yard, O'Brien's strong record is highly likely to be boosted once again.

KEY RACES With three-year-olds holding sway it isn’t surprising that the Epsom Oaks has provided a number of winners of this race. Alexandrova, 2017’s winner Enable, 2020 champion, Love and last year's superstar Snowfall have completed the double in recent years. The Juddmonte Irish Oaks also stands up well, probably as there are only five weeks between the two races making it much easier for a trainer to keep his filly in tip-top condition. 9 of the last 20 Irish Oaks winners made their way to the Knavesmire, with Snowfall becoming the eigth to record the double.

Three-year-olds would appear to be the age group to concentrate on as they have won 20 of the 31 renewals since the race was opened up to older fillies in 1991. The victory of Snowfall last year saw them edge ahead 7-3 in terms of the last decade and the fact that the ‘Classic Generation’ receives a 9lb weight allowance from their older rivals almost certainly has something to do with their overall dominance.

The presence of Alpinista makes this a very tricky race to solve as she has been on a real upward curve and added a Group One to her CV on her last start over in France She returns here with a great shout and although she is five, count her out at your peril. Also bringing some strong French form to the table is the Andre Fabre trained Raclette. Supplemented for the race, she has won her last two starts and providing her French form holds up, she won't be far away. Aidan O'Brien has a brilliant record in the race and TUESDAY ticks quite a few of the all-important trends. The Epsom Oaks winner finished fourth in the Irish Derby behind Westover but should be able to bounce back after a little break to continue Ballydoyle's fine record. Magical Lagoon has really stepped up in class since she's been tried over 1m4f and her win in the Irish Juddmonte Oaks was rather taking. Lilac Road has already proved she can win over the Knavesmire, so brings some handy course form. 7 ran 2m 26.614s Aidan 6 ran 2m 31.31 Gosden Frankie Dettori 1/4F 4 ran 2m 29.90s Haggas Doyle 7/4F ran 2m 30.44s

Midday, carrying the Juddmonte colours, becomes Sir Henry’s fifth Darley Yorkshire Oaks winner Sir Henry & Lady Cecil enjoy a quieter moment

74

Sir Henry’s third and final winner of the EBF Galtres Stakes was Eva Luna, who had the advantage of a trademark ride from Pat Eddery, another legend racing has lost all too soon, as they out battled Sir Michael Stoute’s Time Allowed, himself under a great ride from John Reid. As with many of his top horses, Eva Luna was owned and bred by Prince Khalid Abdullah, the filly did not make her racecourse debut until she was four and was having only the second race of her career that day. In a nomenclature quirk, she was one of two fillies to be named Eva Luna foaled in 1992 the other was trained by Jim Bolger retired after her classic campaign.

It seems barely credible that eight years have passed since the racing world lost one of its true giants with the passing of trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, who is remembered today with the eighth running of the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes.

Those three Galtres triumphs, like all his Knavesmire winners, were a source of deep satisfaction on a racecourse he loved, in a county that was very dear to his heart. Few would dispute that Sir Henry Cecil was the greatest British trainer of the 20th Century. Twenty-five British Classics, six more in Ireland, seventy-five Royal Ascot winners, the first man to saddle 3,000 winners on the Flat in Britain and the first British trainer to win the French Derby, all testify to his brilliance. He learned his trade from two masters, growing up first as the step-son of Royal trainer Captain Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and then as son-in-law of Sir Noel Murless, the outstanding British-based trainer of the 1960’s. They were hard acts to follow, but Sir Henry was to add that magical and indefinable quality which took him from very good to brilliant. It could have been the patience and attention to detail that he learnt tending his rose garden or simply that his natural ease and relaxed demeanour transmitted to his horses.

A TRIBUTE TO SIR HENRY CECIL

Throughout his 44-year career, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival always played a significant role in Sir Henry’s plans each season and Warren Place winners abounded on the Knavesmire each August, including three in the race which now bears his Itname.was not until 1986 that Sir Henry broke his duck in the EBF Galtres Stakes with Startino, but a second winner quickly followed when Upend, owned and bred by the former Newmarket chairman Peter Player, beat the favourite Percy’s Lass by a rather cosy half-length.

JOHN SEXTON REFLECTS ON ONE OF THE GREATS

Frankel with winning owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and Sir Henry Cecil both men, much missed 75

Whatever the reason, Cecil’s innate ability, coupled with the quality of horse he could attract to Warren Place, his base from 1977, meant his runners dominated the championship races. From Royal Ascot to York; from Newmarket to Goodwood, Cecil ruled Likesupreme.Alec Taylor in the early part of the 20th Century, Cecil’s was not a betting yard, but very much a yard to bet on, making him the trainer of choice with punters up and down the land. In the golden summer of 1987, Cecil won one of his ten Trainers’ Championships with 180 winners, an unheard of tally in those days before Sunday fixtures and all-weather racing expanded the programme book. It was achieved between March and November and with barely a handicap winner among them. So many of his horses were pattern race standard that a Cecil runner in a handicap was treated like the Holy Grail by punters. That was why much excitement surrounded the appearance of the Cecil-trained Kneller in the Sky Bet Ebor of 1988. With an Eddery aboard again, this time Paul not Pat, a 9-1 win resulted, a handy return for a horse whose next two races were victories in the Doncaster and the Jockey Club Cups! But then, York was always good to Sir Henry, just as he was always good to York He loved the Knavesmire for its fairness. He mingled freely with racegoers and always seemed to have time to talk despite amassing some 137 winners at the track.

Congratulate him on a winner and almost inevitably he would turn, cock his head to one side in his trademark pose and ask what you thought of the horse and the race. More importantly, he would then listen attentively to the Andanswer.there were many chances for congratulation at York. His seven winners in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante still stands as a record for the race as does his nine victories in the Tattersalls Musidora. It was always said that he was better with fillies than colts, which may be more a relative than an absolute assessment, given his total of eighteen 1000 Guineas and Oaks winners is double that of his nine 2000 Guineas and Derby champions. His York winners seem to support the point, with one of his seven Dante winners, the 1987 hero Reference Point winning the Cazoo Derby, while three of the Musidora stars, Diminuendo, Snow Bride and Reams of Verse added an ConOaks.sider five winners of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, spanning the decades from Connaught Bridge in 1979 to Midday in 2010 and it seems the case is proven. But there is more to weigh. Add into the big race mix, four winners of the Juddmonte International spread over nearly forty years from Wollow in 1976 to Frankel in 2012, plus four more colts in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur, as well as a couple of Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack triumphs and you get a taste of what the Knavesmire meant to Sir Henry, prizes to be aimed for, regardless of the gender of the thoroughbred. Celestial Cloud set the ball rolling at Ripon in May 1969, the first of 3,431 worldwide victories His last winner here was First Mohican, the opening victor of York’s 2013 season. He started favourite, of course, making it apt that Sir Henry’s first and last winners were in his beloved Yorkshire. His last runner at York was Ace of Valhalla just two weeks before his passing. Those names will probably drift into obscurity with the passing of the years, unlike that of Frankel, whose truly astounding win in the 2012 Juddmonte International is indelibly imprinted in the minds of all who saw it. Knighted for services to the sport in 2011, it was fitting that Sir Henry Cecil’s last big race win at York should be with Frankel. Was he the greatest horse who ever raced? Very possibly. Hugely impressive though Mark Johnston’s record haul truly is, was Sir Henry Cecil the greatest British trainer of all time? Quite probably. Both legendary horse and trainer now have permanent markers in their honour at York with a life size statue and a set of wrought iron gates respectively. It is little wonder then that the spontaneous appeal for “three cheers for Sir ‘enry” was greeted so rapturously around the Winner’s Enclosure that August; he may have loved York, but York also loved him.

By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record Pedigree is the second option, the more professional “p”.
