A very warm welcome to a day of both speed and endurance at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. The race programme features both the fastest race of our season – the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe and our richest staying race – the Group Two Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup. Both races form part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and the Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe is also part of the “win and you’re in” Breeders Cup Challenge Series for the Turf Sprint.

This year marks a century since the first staging of our feature Group One which shines the spotlight falls on some of the quickest horses; battling it out for a record prize fund of £500,000 It is a race to take your place, hold your breath and enjoy. The locally trained defending champion, Winter Power, faces some fresh rivals, most intriguingly The Platinum Queen. Her owners, Middleham Park Racing, have paid £40,000 in a late entry fee in the belief that her speed and the benefit a lower starting weight as a two-year-old will see her emulate Kingsgate Native back in 2007, as a juvenile winner Over in less than a minute, keep your eyes on that giant stopwatch. A little earlier in the day and it’ll be the turn of the leading juveniles to contest the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, it will tell us which connections are to address the 251st Gimcrack Dinner in December Operating at the other end of both trip and experience is the mighty Stradivarius. The Bjorn Nielsen owned legend has clocked up over seventy miles on racetracks , before he adds the two miles of today’s Group Two race Unbeaten on the Knavesmire, a record seventh win as well as a fourth Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup beckons for the charge of John and Thady Gosden. Facing regular rivals, the Alan King trained, Trueshan, offers the greatest threat according to the betting market. As if that wasn’t enough, we have the richest maiden race in the land, one of twenty-three York contests to receive the generous backing of the European Breeders’ Fund, notepads and Ipads the ready come 4.45pm, a star may well be revealed. In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the York Gin Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as The 8th Sign and the Potions Cauldron are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun! A unique prize awaits the winner of the special “Strad Style” category. We are delighted that today is the third of three World Pool event in a groundbreaking partnership with the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool means any tote bet you have today will go into a larger deeper pool, smoothing pricing as racegoers at York today and those around the world bet into one single pool. We welcome our partners from World Pool to York.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area. Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

Tuesday battled back gamely to her credit but ultimately it was in vain and the Sir Mark Prescott trained five-year-old ran out a ready winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

Dramatised look to be the pick of the Karl Burke team and had the rail to help her however she raced a little freely in the early stages and ended up finishing fifth. Second favourite Mawj elected to race down the centre of the track but didn’t really exhibit her usual exciting turn of foot and could only manage fourth. Swingalong led those on the right flank of Mawj and was followed into the race by Queen Me. The two groups began to merge as they hit the two-furlong pole and Swingalong began to draw alongside Dramatised. Matilda Picotte kept battling away between the pair but couldn’t quite find that extra gear to go with Clifford Lee’s mount Queen Me put in a late charge however couldn’t quite reel in Swingalong after the daughter of Showcasing had kicked clear. She kept finding out in front and clearly has a lot of potential. The Karl Burke team would had mixed emotions as Dramatised look to not stay the trip but would have been overjoyed with their winner and is she is one they’ll be looking forward too as she progresses into a three-year-old.

Alpinista had been touted as a serious Arc contender before the race and to most eyes she delivered with a brilliant win in our feature yesterday. There was some late money about for the Ballydoyle filly Tuesday and you could see why with the trainer’s brilliant record in the race. La Petite Coco and Magical Lagoon took them along at a steady enough gallop and there didn’t seem to be any real urgency from either jockey to up the gallop too soon.

Tuesday and Alpinista were given the perfect toe into the race and there would be no excuses for either come the finish. Lilac Road, Raclette and Poptronic all raced in the rear, Sam James look to have his hands full on the keen going Karl Burke filly.

RESULT 1st Swingalong 25/1 2nd Queen Me 20/1 3rd Matilda Picotte 11/1

RESULT 1st Alpinista 7/4F 2nd Tuesday 7/2 3rd La Petite Coco 4/1 17

Coming into the straight it was clear that it was going to turn into a bit of a dash for the line and they got racing quite a way from home. Ryan Moore gave Tuesday the dream passage through the middle of the two pace setters, while Luke Morris elected to charter the wider course, as he had done the whole way round.

THE SKY BET LOWTHER (GROUP 2) Day two of the Sky Ber Ebor Festival began with a bit of a surprise as the Karl Burke trained Swingalong fought off the late charge from Queen Me to prevail by a neck. As with most two-year-old races there was a ferocious pace on early doors that saw the hot favourite Dramatised ,owned by Leeds businessman Steve Parkin contested the early lead with Kerindia and Maltilda Picotte

The two came up alongside each other coming into the final few furlongs but Luke Morris always looked the more comfortable of the two and once he got serious, he quickly put the race to bed.

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided?

Can you name the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe winning trainer?

1. I was a bit of a York specialist back in my day, winning twice over the Knavesmire, including the feature race today. I built up an excellent parternship with one jockey but was ridden by four others throughout my career. (If you’ve guessed me already, can you name all five jockeys?)

WHO AM I?

CORNER P U Z Z L E

YORKS RACING CHALLENGE

2. I hail from a family that has trained well over 1000 winners, including 2 Cheltenham Festival winners. I began life as a jockey and rode over 200 winners before becoming a trainer in 1982. In 2021 I recorded my best season to date with 41 winners, which included two winners at York.

GUESS WHO?

Name todays runners from these clues.

Village on the southern edge of the City Of Exeter

I won seven races in my career including a Group Three to go with my Group one.

PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T

1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT Win Only EACH WAY A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• 5 7 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

• 3 or 4 runners all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2

STRAIGHT FORECAST Name the first and second in the correct order

• 8 or more runners 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

How

Official BHA Ratings

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

SALUTING THE CROWD?

RACE HISTORY?

The latter could be the first to bag a four-timer today. The very best stayers in Europe have their season geared around “the Cup Races” of which the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup features strongly With Classic and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winners amongst its roll of honour, it is a race that is right up there with the best of them.

Distance Two miles (3,200m) Prize money £250,000 FILE:

The race started life as a Listed contest and was called the Lonsdale Stakes, run over 1m7f198y It was promoted to Group 3 level in 1998, before being renamed the Lonsdale Cup and given Group 2 status in 2004. The distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.

LUCK OF THE IRISH?

Whilst he may not have been the highest rated, Sergeant Cecil was certainly a favourite with the Knavesmire crowds where he won four times from seven starts. He landed this prize in 2006 before following up in the following month’s Doncaster Cup, which was run here due to redevelopments on Town Moor His other victories here included the Sky Bet Ebor in 2005 and the 2007 Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup. Sergeant Cecil Opinion Poll WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL?

That honour befalls six horses who have each won the race twice Further Flight (1992 & 1993), Double Eclipse (1995 & 1997), Celeric (1996 &1999), Persian Punch (1998 & 2001), Opinion Poll (2010 & 2011) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019, 2021).

WHAT AGE GROUP HAS THE BEST RECORD?

Since 1980 four-year-olds lead the way having won the race 13 times. Five-year-olds are next best, with eight victories, while three-year-olds have seven. Stradivarius (and Fujaira Prince & The Grand Visir) became the first seven-year-old to win this since Sargeant Cecil in 2006, while this year he could return and become only the second winner of this at his age the great Persian Punch being the other in 2001. The record-breaking Mark Johnston has been a leading light for the White Rose county having won the race three times. Double Eclipse won the race twice in 1995 & 1997 with his dual Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winner Royal Rebel adding the third in 2000 Tim Easterby has also been successful when his St Leger winner Bollin Eric landed the honours in 2003. Yorkshire is represented by Gemma Tutty and Brian Ellison this afternoon. The former’s runner looks to have it all to prove, while Tashkhan has run behind Stradivarius this season, on a surface he wouldn’t have preferred. THE you read your racecard carefully, you may have noticed that Weatherbys are the team behind this racecard and those at thousands of other race meetings. As well as this specialist printing and editorial service to racing they are its civil service, keeping the administration of the sport on track. The equine insurance arm of the business supports this particular race. Frankie Dettori surpassed Pat Eddery’s mark of five in 2019 thanks to Stradivarius. The pair then went one better in last year’s renewal but it is Andrea Atzeni that rides Stradivarius this year. Jim Crowley could make it two wins in the race should Reshoun oblige.

RECENT FORM Stayers tend to mature as the season goes on and therefore it isn’t completely surprising to note that only four recent winners of this race had been successful on their previous start However, only one of the last ten winners of this race had not achieved a top four finish last time which suggests that it is the form horses coming into the race that are the group to focus on.

Although three-year-olds are eligible for the Lonsdale Cup, the Classic generation easily have the worst record in the race, a negatiove for Mostly Cloudy here. When it comes to positives, the most successful age group are the five-year-olds who have taken four of the last ten renewals,

BETTING Montaly triumphed in 2017 at odds of 16/1 and whilst Millenary (12/1) and Times Up (11/1) have also provided small shocks, they have proved the exception rather than the rule as those towards the head of the market have enjoyed the most success. There have been five winning favourites in the last ten renewals and the average winning SP during the same time is around 5/1.

CONCLUSION Stradivarius returns to try and bring up the four-timer on what could be his final appearance at the track when taking part in a race. John & Thady Gosden's record is not to be overlooked and it would be no surprise to see him win here today. Mostly Cloudy has won five races on the bounce but this is by far his toughest assignment, he has it all to do from a mark of 93. Tashkhan has been running in all the right races this season without quite getting his head in front. A third behind Stradivarius in the Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup was an excellent effort and he won't be far away should he bring his best form to the table. The preference is for the Alan King trained TRUESHAN, who ran a brilliant race at Goodwood behind Kyprios to finish third. The ground would have been quicker than he would have liked, and any rain will aid his chances. CLASS Opinion Poll, Pale Mimosa, Max Dynamite and, most recently, Montaly all went on to win the Lonsdale Cup having not contested a Group race on their most recent start, but on the whole these are exceptional in that respect. Every other winner contested either a Group 1 or 2 contest on their previous outing, including last year's winner, Stradivarius who finsihed third in the Goodwood Stakes, a Group One run over two miles.

The Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 (like this one) and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ horses, run over two miles which is the longest distance of the week. Weight allowances are granted based on age, gender and previous success. Although we have no fillies present today, 3YO Mostly Cloudy starts at 8st 7lb due to physical development compared to his older rivals The older male horses including Stradivarius carry 9st 5lb The chestnut star is bidding for a magnificent unbeaten seven on the Knavesmire.

The Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup (Group 2) (British Champions Series) Two Miles About 88 Yards (3,200 metres) See page 93 for conditions of this race.

Winner: STRADIVARIUS Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age/Weight: 7-9-3 Runners: 4 SP: 4/6F On this day last year, superstar stayer Stradivarius took home his third Lonsdale Cup to add to his growing collection of top staying prizes. However, Spanish Mission forced Stradivarius to dig deep and fight all the way to the line in a race that proved the battle-hardened Stradivarius still had that same heart at seven-years-old.

Boasting an impressive six from six here, his record at York is clearly second to none and it is likely the crowd will be willing him home to extend this winning streak on the Knavesmire. Any amount of rain could see the reopposing Trueshan get closer to the selection after finishing just over a length behind him at Goodwood last month and he certainly seems a big threat. A special race merits a special trophy and that is exactly what the winner of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack will receive. The sponsor wanted to provide something that really meant something to the winning owner, so they will win a commission from leading photographer, Dominic James. Based in Newmarket, Dominic is a thoroughbred photography specialist. He’s taken his 30-year creative industry expertise, and applied this, along with his understanding of the thoroughbred to the racehorse imagery he captures, making his photos unique and creative. His work can be found online via his Instagram account @horsesintraining So, today’s presentation will show an indication of his work, with the lucky winner getting to work with Dominic on a very special memory. 55

A SPECIAL TROPHY FOR A SPECIAL RACE: AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI GIMCRACK

The 2014 winner Muhaarar went from strength-to-strength as a three-year-old. The Charlie Hills-trained sprinter won four consecutive Group 1s the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, the Darley July Cup at Newmarket, the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and the British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot. In the process, he wrote his name into the record book by becoming the first British-trained horse for 25 years to complete a hat-trick of Group 1 sprints. The last horse to achieve such a feat was the 1991 Nunthorpe winner Dayjur, who, like Muhaarar, was owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum. Muhaarar Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, with a trainer, a jockey and a stable lad.

A BRIEF HISTORY?

56

The Gimcrack Stakes was established in 1846. Originally open to horses of either gender, the first renewal was won by Ellerdale, ridden by Tommy Lye and trained by Tom Dawson. It wasn’t until 1987 when the race was restricted to colts and geldings. WAS GIMCRACK?

Stubbs, a leading artist in the 18th Century, is perhaps best known for his equine master pieces. The record price for a Stubbs painting was set by the sale at auction of Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, with a Trainer, a Stable-Lad, and a Jockey at Christie’s in London in July 2011 for £22.4 million.

The race tends to produce top-class sprinters but the 2001 winner Rock Of Gibraltar broke the mould. As a three-year-old he won the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the Irish 2,000 Guineas during a run of seven consecutive Group 1 victories. Only Frankel can better that! Further back in time, the legendary Mill Reef won this race in 1970 before winning the Cazoo Derby the following year

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY CLASSIC WINNERS??

Distance Six furlongs (1,400m) Prize money £250,000 TheAlBastiEquiworld DubaiGimcrackStakes FACT FILE: Gimcrack, a grandson of the foundation stallion, the Godolphin Arabian, was a 18th century racehorse who, despite his small stature at just 14.2 hands, won 27 of his 36 races in a career spanning seven seasons.

Kevin Ryan

LEADING TRAINERS?

William I’Anson, Jr. leads the way having won the race seven times but that statistic won’t help you today he trained at the end of the 1800s. Of the current crop, Kevin Ryan has won the race four times, so there must be high hopes for Catch The Paddy and Chuzzlewit this afternoon. Clearpoint may give Richard Fahey another win after Sands of Mali opened his account in 2017.

LEADING RIDER? Oisin Murphy FASTEST TIME?

In 2009, John Gosden’s Showcasing covered the six furlongs course in a time of 1m 9.28s a then course record! This record remaining in place until Tiggy Wiggy broke it in the 2014 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes. Not badly at all. Mick Easterby won in 1986 with Wiganthorpe and Lynda Ramsden added another with Chilly Billy in 1994. Since then, Kevin Ryan has led the White Rose county with four victories Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), the much-missed Astaire (2013) and Emaraaty Ana in 2018. This year he has two lively chances in Catch The Paddy and Chuzzlewit. The White Rose is further represented by Lakota Blue (Nigel Tinkler). Marshman & Cold Case (Karl Burke) and Clearpoint (Richard Fahey). It looks as though the prize may well be staying in the North WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Formerly known as Al Basti Hartog and established in the year 1998, Al Basti Equiworld Dubai has, within a short span of time, become the pioneers in equine industry to Middle East and expanded across the globe They have always recommended and introduced the best quality natural products which have had a very good response from the industry and are the distributors for leading companies such as Baileys Horse Feeds and Foran Equine Products. Like the leading trainer, John Osborne Junior (nine wins) isn’t around anymore to offer any clues to this year’s result. Of those with rides today, Jim Crowley (Royal Scotsman), William Buick (Noble Style) and Neil Callan (Chuzzlewit) are the only others to have tasted past success

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE? Richard Fahey

TRAINER

DISTANCE Six of the last ten winners of this race had previously won over this 6f trip suggesting that the proven ability to stay the trip is becoming more and more important compared to previously, when many had not yet graduated from five furlongs.

A super competitive renewal of the The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes sees 12 runners go to post. Despite being trained by Kevin Ryan, Chuzzlewit finished fifth on his last start so may be best left to see if he can show some more improvement this time up. Glaeron is the only other in the field to finish out the first three on his previous engagement but does already have a win to his name, albeit in a lower graded affair. Marshman has done little wrong in victory and fairly bolted up at Thirsk for the Karl Burke team, he very much slots into the could be anything category and it will be interesting to see how high his ceiling could be. It looks to be a bit of a shootout between Noble Style and ROYAL SCOTSMAN, with the preference marginally for the latter. He does carry a penalty for this but his Group Two win at Goodwood looks to be the best form on offer. WINNERS LAST TEN RUNNINGS Year Winner Trainer Jockey SP Runners Time Going Lusail

BETTING In the last decade there have been only three winning favourites of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack but they all came in the last five years. Nine of those winners were sent off at single-figure odds. An average starting price of around 5/1 also suggests that it is important not to stray too far from the market leaders. KEY TRENDS Trained by Kevin Ryan Finished in first three last time Avoid outsiders in the market CONCLUSION

PREVIOUS

Of those with runners this year, Kevin Ryan has the best record having won the race four times, courtesy of Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), Astaire (2013) and most recently Emaraaty Ana in 2018 He has two lively chances, Catch The Paddy and Chuzzlewit.

A last time out victory is not essential with only five of the last ten winners having had such form to their name. However, it is worth noting only one horse in the last decade had finished outside of the first three on their most recent start. Interestingly, less than half of the winners in the last decade contested a Group race on their most recent outing, so don’t be shy to look beyond those already proven at this level.

Owner: Hilal Salem Trainer: Alex Scott Jockey: Pat Eddery Breeder: Highclere Stud Ltd Sheikh Albadou was another brilliant Nunthorpe winner in what was a golden era for the race. He differed significantly from Dayjur in that he progressed though handicap company. He relished the sprint course at York, winning what is now known as the Reg Griffin Memorial Trophy in June 1991 by an easy four lengths, which signalled the end of his handicapping career. Ridden by Pat Eddery, just two starts later he defeated Paris House by a length and a half at York he was defeated subsequently at Haydock and Longchamp but returned to form in a blaze of glory with a decisive Breeders Cup Sprint success at Churchill Downs, banishing the ghost of Dayjur from twelve months earlier.

A striking grey mare who did an incredibly popular double in this famous race for her County Durham-based trainer Michael Dods Her first success in the race came when she defeated the hot-favourite, American speedster, Acapulco, despite giving the filly almost two stone in weight. She followed up in 2016 in similarly comprehensive fashion, bolting clear of a field that included Group 1 July Cup winner, Limato, and dual Coolmore Nunthorpe champion, Sole Power.

Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum Trainer: Major Dick Hern Jockey: Willie Carson Breeder: Georgia E Hofmann Dick Hern’s flying colt Dayjur was the racing sensation of 1990. Following some early season defeats in minor company, he suddenly ‘took off’ in mid-summer, rattling off five consecutive wins in the Temple Stakes, Kings Stand Stakes, Nunthorpe, Haydock Park Sprint Cup and Prix de L’Abbaye. His York win was achieved in a breathtaking 56.16 seconds, a course record that was only broken in 2019. However, he may be best remembered for his heart-breaking defeat in America. Drawn very wide in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, he showed blistering speed to take up the running a furlong from home, but when the race appeared in the bag he inexplicably jumped a shadow 50 yards from home, handing the advantage to Safely Kept who got up by a neck.

COOLMORE NUNTHORPE (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES) (GROUP 1) There is always a healthy debate in sport about comparisons over the generations, our fantasy race below is our contribution to the chatter.

Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum Trainer: Charles Hills Jockey: Jim Crowley Breeder: Ballyphilip Stud Despite being one of the fastest horses on the planet for some time, Battaash had always seen the Coolmore Nunthorpe title elude him two defeats in the race led many to suggest that perhaps the Knavesmire wasn’t his track, or that earlier exertions in the season didn’t help him here. However, his 2019 success put to bed any concerns as this brilliant speedster secured his second Group 1 triumph in sensational fashion, bolting clear of the field and breaking Dayjur’s almost 30-year strong track record. He made it two on the bounce in 2020 with another dominant performance and booked his place among the sprinting greats. 2020

NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND

The Middleham Park team consider that three wins from four, albeit in her maiden season, merits a roll of the dice for the Richard Fahey trained two-year-old. They will be hoping the weight for age benefit accorded their youngster will see her home in fine fashion.

The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard. The prize money on offer at the Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.

The Platinum Queen Original prize fund: £500,000 Supplementary entry fee: £40,000 (deducted as if it were an original entry) (£6,250) Leaves a balance of £33,750 Final total prize fund: £533,750

For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold. For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Juddmonte International closed for original entries on June 26th. However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners. If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium. In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Coolmoore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe has risen because of one supplementary entry, with The Platinum Queen joining the field.

The Platinum Queen 63

The other entrants at the same stage had paid £6,250 each, so this sum is transferred to the original pot of £500,000. The balance is then added to create a total prize fund of £533,750.

The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.

The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”.

Coming up to date and Coolmore, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Originally, a relatively small farm, owner Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, began transforming it in 1968 and after going into partnership with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster the three men built it up into the well-known stud farm it is today. Vigors sold his interest to O’Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier and it was Magnier who built the stud into a multi-national, multi-billion-euro operation. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. Coolmore’s greatest stallion, Galileo, who was sadly lost last year at the age of 23, destroyed his rivals in both the Epsom Derby and the Irish equivalent before completing an impressive hat-trick in the King George at Ascot. Since his retirement, he was Champion Sire in 12 different years having sired a staggering 91 individual Group 1 winners. If you were to glance at his most successful progeny, you would see that he has sired many of the best racehorses in recent years, making an indelible mark on modern horse racing. These include Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Gleneagles all now stallions in their own right but this is by no means a coincidence. Galileo was not only a super sire, but he made his name as a sire of sires, with an incredible 20 of his sons having sired Group 1 winners in their own right, and that trait has no doubt been passed on from his sire Sadler’s Wells. He too stood at Coolmore and comes from the Northern Dancer line, regarded as one of the most productive bloodlines in the history of thoroughbred racing. In Galileo’s (and the recently departed Mastercraftsman’s) stead, Coolmore now stand numerous big race winners in Camelot, Caravaggio, Churchill and Highland Reel, looking to continue their huge influence on the bloodstock world and Camelot has certainly started well, with 47 Group and Stakes winners worldwide including Santa Barbara and last weeks Group Three winner Luxembourg This afternoon’s feature race title nods at yet another whose prospects look as bright as his on-course career, Wootton Bassett. This festival produces champions and future stallions. Australia obliged in the Juddmonte International in 2014, and is now one of the big names on the Coolmore roster. The strength that they possess in the stallion department, as well as determination and knowledge of its founders, shows no signs of ceasing. Coolmore continue to produce Classic winners year on year and as a result continue to set a benchmark, in part thanks to the exploits of the great Galileo, who will be much missed.

But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough.

TWO-YEAR-OLDS?

The race is one of a limited number of races in which two-year-old horses can compete against their elders. The first juvenile to win was High Treason in 1953, and the most recent was Kingsgate Native in 2007 a record that is in danger today with the engagement of The Platinum Queen from the juvenile class of 2022.

The race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011 which means the winner of this year’s race earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday 7th November Star US-trained filly, Acapulco ran an eye catching second in 2015 and Lady Aurelia filled the same spot in 2017, just pipped at the post by Marsha in a thriller. Golden Pal failed to make amends last year for Wesley Ward and this year he has chosen to keep his runners State Side.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

Distance Five furlongs (1,000m) Prize money £533,750 (Inc Supplementary entry fee) The Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes FACT FILE:

The race is named after Nunthorpe, an area of York located to the north of the racecourse The first version, a low-grade selling race, was established in 1903 before the present version began in 1922 when it was won by Two Step.

Ireland’s Dermot Weld won the race in 1984 with Committed. Since then Aidan O’Brien has added a musical double with Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001). This afternoon sees New York City travel across from the Emerald Isle to try and give Ballydoyle a thirs success in the race France’s Robert Collet won the race in 1986 with Last Tycoon as did John Hammond with Nuclear Debate in 2000 despite his non-French passport. Australia chipped in when Ortensia won for Paul Messara in 2012, giving the race a full international flavour.

LEADING RIDER?

Now in it’s fifteenth year of sponsorship, Coolmore are a worldwide breeding and racing operation. With studs in Ireland, Australia and the United States they stand some of racings leading stallions including Camelot, Australia, Churchill and Wootton Bassett. The late Lester Piggott holds the record with 7 victories Right Boy (1958, 1959), Matatina (1963), Caterina (1966), Tower Walk (1969), Swing Easy (1971) & Solinus (1978). Of the current crop, Frankie Dettori is one of only two multiple winners having won the race three times Lochsong (1993), So Factual (1995) & Lochangel (1998), while Jim Crowley’s association with Battaash puts him on two wins. The former partners doesn’t have a ride today so won’t be narrowing the gap, while Crowley will bid to make it three wins aboard Khaadem. Silvestre De Sousa rides Flotus for the Crisford family after last year’s success and will be looking to back it back-to-back wins.

Michael Dods LEADING TRAINER?

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Ossie Bell currently holds the record with 5 victories Highborn II (1926, 1927), Greenore (1932), Concerto (1933) & Ipsden (1937). In the modern era Aidan O’Brien, Michael Dods, Sir Mark Prescott and Charlie Hills have each won the race twice. Charlie Hills is represented by Khadeem, while O’Brien sends over New York City Tim Easterby won the race last year and returns once more with the york specialist Winter Power.

A Century since its first staging, only two horses have managed to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe three times Tag End in 1928, 1929 & 1930 and Sharpo in 1980, 1981 & 1982. Will Winter Power get within one of this exclusive club? Not too bad at all. In 1997, the White Rose county won the race twice! The David Barron-trained Costal Bluff and the much missed David “Dandy” Nicholls-trained Ya Malak dead-heated for first place. Nicholls then won it outright with Bahamian Pirate in 2004 before our old favourite Borderlescott won back-to-back in 2008-09 Mecca’s Angel scored for the second year in a row for Michael Dods and the North in 2016. Yorkshire continued their fine form last year with Tim Easterby claiming the prize. This year he returns with the star filly to try and re-claim the crown. Kevin Ryan sends Emaraaty Ana, while Yorkshire is further represented with The Platinum Queen (Richard Fahey and Acklam Express (Nigel Tinkler).

2020 Battaash

The best guide is Royal Ascot’s King’s Stand Stakes which has supplied eleven of the last eighteen winners of the Nunthorpe. Run over 5f, the race was upgraded to a Group 1 in 2008, and since then Borderlescott, Ortensia, Sole Power and Battaash have all taken it in en route to the Knavesmire. It falls to the King's Stand third, Acklam Express to carry that flag today, alongside the 14th placed Winter Power.

RECENT FORM Nine of the last ten winners achieved a top four finish on their most recent start, with Sole Power, Ortensia, Mecca’s Angel and Battaash (x2) the only four to get their head in front on their latest run. It’s also worth noting that all of the last ten winners had already won at least once earlier in the season, so this isn’t a race in which you want to be relying on a horse bouncing back to form.

BETTING The Nunthorpe has been no stranger to big priced winners in recent seasons, with Sole Power (2010), Margot Did (2011), Jwala (2013) and the 2018 winner, Alpha Delphini all obliging at odds of 20/1 or bigger. Historically however, the race has shown favour towards those at the head of the market with thirteen of the last ninteen winners coming from within the top four in the market.

AGE Since 1958, there have only been eight winners of the Nunthorpe aged six or above suggesting that we should view their chances with a degree of scepticism, however it is worth noting that all eight of those happened in the last sixteen years, including the 2018 winner Alpha Delphini and Battaash last year, so perhaps it’s a trend on the move. Unlike most races run on the flat, two-year-olds are allowed to mix it with their older rivals in the Nunthorpe. They have won the race twice since 1992 courtesy of Lyric Fantasy and Kingsgate Native in 2007. The Platinum Queen bids to make it a third.

CONCLUSION

Winter Power has some tremendous York form but things haven't really gone her way this season and she may just find a couple of improvers to good for her this time. Royal Aclaim was mightily impressive on only her third start and fairly blew away her rivals in the John Smith's City Wall Stakes, that course form could stand her in great stead here. She would have to become only the second three-year-old this decade to do the business though. As the King's Stand is such a good trial for this race, it's hard to looked past the Nigel Tinkler trained ACKLAM EXPRESS. A similar run to that fourth placed effort would see him go close providing he has put his last run behind him. 77 The Assured Data Protection EBF Fillies’ Stakes (Heritage Handicap) One Mile Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 93 for conditions of this race. RACE DESCRIPTION

Our fifth race is another heritage handicap, again with a £100,000 purse, open to 3yo+ fillies and mares and is over a mile and a quarter All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. As racing recognises that younger horses, aged 3, are likely to be at a different stage of development, notice how Croachill is one to benefit by starting with a lower weight. Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

Narrowing down the field of seventeen declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is.

HANDICAP?

6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good’ will be the description, the John & Thady Gosden-trained Operating might well continue his winning form to claim first place. The improving three-year-old was a comfortable winner off a mark of 83 and despite a 8lb rise, he still looks well handicapped.

This afternoon’s Sky Bet Mile Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with seventeen closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.

Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE

4) GROUND If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Blenheim Boy is one who will enjoy a quicker surfaces. However Operating wins have come on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.

5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year we have plenty of horses that have won at the course and distance, Exminister is the only horse to have completed the double.

A BIG

86

SKY BET MILE HANDICAP

Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form. Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Spirit Catcher is rated 87 is considered 1lb “better” than City Runner who is rated 89. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Spirit Catcher should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Spirit Catcher carries 1lb more than City Runner, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fifteen runners but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all seventeen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance? Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.

1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Blenheim Boy, Mr Professor & Spirit Catcher.

2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running around a bend like for this one, they would lobby for the horse drawn with the shortest way home. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Most times, over the longer distance the pace of the race sorts out any benefit accrued from the draw. Perhaps Leuven Power can use this to his advantage.

3) DISTANCE Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Al Marmar, New Kingdom and Bay Of Honour have all won over today’s disrance

RACE DESCRIPTION We end with a handicap this time for 3yo horses only going over a mile Open to 3yo rated 0-105, will again attract some pretty smart types (like for cricketers at Lords today, a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). Dress Standards Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Gentlemen in the County Stand are required to wear a jacket, collared shirt and tie. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required.

Drugs A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.

Parade Ring For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.

The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.

Litter Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse. Noise So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.
