OFFICIAL RACECARD THURSDAY 20th AUGUST
W ELCOME T O Y ORKSHIRE E BOR F ESTIVAL 2020 F EATURING
T HE G1 D ARLEY Y ORKSHIRE O AKS
Welcome A very warm welcome to Darley Yorkshire Oaks day from wherever you are following the action. In a difficult year for so many people, on this most unusual of Ladies Days, we hope the star fillies and their riders, can bring some joy into our lives. In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels #EborAtHome. The team at ITV Racing will bring you five races a day and if you want to follow all the action then Racing TV are covering all the contests. We are incredibly grateful that the connections of such high-quality horses have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. For over thirty seasons now, our best race for fillies and mares has attracted the superstars and benefited from the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, we remain hugely appreciative of this backing. We enjoyed a brilliant display by the horse of the year yesterday as Ghaiyyath took the Group 1 Juddmonte International in dominant style for Charlie Appleby, William Buick and team Godolphin. So, gauntlet down to today’s fillies. This year’s renewal of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks looks a little unusual, in this most unusual of years, as the main contenders all hail from the Classic generation. The incredibly impressive QIPCO 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner, Love, hopes to add the Yorkshire version to her glowing CV but faces competition that includes Royal Ascot winner, Frankly Darling, and the burgeoning talent of Franconia, who landed the Listed EBF Lyric Stakes here last month. It falls to Manuela De Vega, unbeaten herself in 2020, to represent the older horses. In a day where the fillies and mares can really shine, the Sky Bet Lowther, the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes and our second European Breeders’ Fund backed contest at 4.50pm, all exclusively feature the female equines. The above four races combined with the valuable Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes and the ultra-competitive Clipper Logistics Stakes, offer action on the track that looks top notch. The top class racing we are staging this week, with £2.3m in prize money, is only possible due to the steadfast support of our sponsors, partners, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing from the comfort of your armchair and can share the thrills of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. Stay safe. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Can you remember the name of this top-class jockey who was a four-time winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks?
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed past success in today’s Darley Yorkshire Oaks from the clues provided? 1. I was born in Ireland in 1887 and brought up at the family home in County Meath, though I was educated at Eton. My first job was pupil trainer with Atty Persse and then assistant to Captain Dewhurst at Bedford Lodge in Newmarket. I left to become racing manager for leading owner Sir Ernest Cassel, for whom I bought the 1914 Eclipse Stakes and Champion Stakes winner Hapsburg. 2. I was wounded at the Battle of the Somme in the First World War when I was a captain in the Scots Guards and after the War started training at Freemason Lodge, Newmarket in 1923. I had my first two winners back-to-back for a double at Pontefract on April 12. In a long career, I won every Classic at least once, including my only Derby with Parthia in 1959. 3. I had the first of my six Darley Yorkshire Oaks wins with Rackety Lassie in 1931 and the second with Dalmary three years later. After the Second World War, I won again with Ladycross in 1947 before saddling the only three winners of the race owned by the reigning monarch. Victories for Angelola in 1948 and Above Board in 1950 were for HM King George VI and Almeria in 1957 for HM The Queen. Knighted in the New Year’s Honours list of 1968, I retired at the end of that year and handed over my string to my stepson Henry Cecil.
YORK’S RACING CHALLENGE 1. Enable won her second Darley Yorkshire Oaks crown last year, but can you name the two other fillies that took the race in the same famous colours of Prince Khalid Abdullah in the previous 15 years? If you know the years too, even better. 2. The extremely talented Sea Of Class, who is sadly no longer with us, took the 2018 Darley Yorkshire Oaks in devastating style. Which two subsequent Group 1 winners did she beat that day? 3. Richard Hannon Sr. still reigns as the trainer with the best record in the Sky Bet Lowther, but can you remember who won the 2008 renewal for the expert handler and why it stood out as being out of the ordinary? 4. Plenty of top-quality fillies have added to the Black-Type on their pages when winning the EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes, but do you remember the last winner to have represented the great trainer in the race? Clue - you’ll have to go back over 20 years. Oh, and do you know the Group contest that filly collected on her next start? 5. Can you name some of this afternoon’s runners from the clues below? A – A 1983 hit for Madness. B – The Power of .... as sung by Jennifer Rush and also Celine Dion. C – ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’, is one of these - perhaps you have Gold, Silver or Bronze? D – A dry anise-flavoured aperitif that is widely consumed in Greece and Cyprus. E – Drax, Cottam and Didcot are but three examples of this in the UK.
Answers to today’s puzzles can be found here. 14
YORK’S WORDSEARCH Hidden in the grid are the names of 17 previous winners of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks which are all listed below. Locate the horses in the grid and cross out the letters and when you have found them all, by starting at the top left and reading left to right down the grid, the letters that are left will spell out the names of seven selections for today’s races at the Welcome To Yorkshire Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York. Be warned, though, the names of the previous winners can be left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, vertically, horizontally or diagonally and some letters are used more than once.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York race-course team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Gimcrack Stakes in late August and the Listed 6F Garrowby Stakes in September. We would like to thank the countless people behind the scenes who have made racing possible once more. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

TRAINERS Of those with runners this year, Karl Burke, Richard Fahey and William Haggas can boast a previous success. Haggas has won two Sky Bet Lowthers in the past eight years, so Sacred must be highly respected. RECENT FORM With eight of the last fourteen winners of the Lowther Stakes having won on their most recent starts, it suggests that recent form is an important factor to consider. Interestingly, of the six who fail on this trend, four had achieved a top three finish and only Silk Blossom and Hooray completely missed out by each finishing 6th. BETTING Last year's 12/1 winner, Living In The past joined Hooray, Best Terms and Besharah in causing a stir when landing the spoils at 11/1 in 2010, 2011 and 2015 respectively, but an average SP of just below 5/1 tells us that the market principals tend to dominate in this race. There have been three winning favourites in the last ten years and so it would seem prudent to focus on the more fancied runners, certainly those 12/1 or less, if this trend is to be believed.

KEY RACES The Princess Margaret and Queen Mary Stakes, both run at Ascot over 6f and 5f respectively, have been the best pointers in recent years. If you were to favour one race then it would have to be the Princess Margaret Stakes with Enthused (2000), Russian Rhythm (2002), Soar (2004), Lady Of The Desert (2009) and Besharah (2015) all having followed up their Ascot victory by winning this afternoon’s race. Living In The Past was also third in the Princess Margaret Stakes before winning here. Santosha, Hala Hala Hala and On My Way come from that contest this year. DISTANCE There is nothing to be gained in this area as in recent seasons there is a pretty even split of winning fillies which had already won over six furlongs and those that were winning over this trip for the first time. KEY TRENDS Won or placed last time out Ran in the Princess Margaret Stakes Focus on those towards the head of the betting
CONCLUSION Yorkshire have a superb record in this over the past few years, so with the Princess Margaret Stakes being such a key trial for this, Hala Hala Hala has to be strongly considered for Kevin Ryan's Hambleton yard. She conceded first run to Santosha at Ascot and may be able to turn the tables after wind surgery and the application of a tongue tie for the first time. However, even though he doesn't train in Yorkshire, William Haggas is a Skipton-born son of the county with an excellent record in this and it may prove that the Cheveley Park-owned SACRED is a cut above these. The form of her debut win at Newmarket is strong and her second to the US speedster Campanelle in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot is the best recorded effort in this field. The Ken Condon-trained Miss Amulet could be the best of the Irish challenge and is an experienced contender with five runs already under her belt, so could bag herself a place at least. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 19
The Sky Bet Lowther Stakes
FACT FILE: WHERE DOES THE RACE NAME COME FROM? It was named in memory of Hugh Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale. It was established in 1946, and the inaugural running was won by Southernwood.
Distance Six furlongs (1,200m)
Prize money £75,000
IS IT A CLASSIC TRIAL?
Yes, many of the recent winners have gone on to run in the following year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas. Russian Rhythm was the last to complete the big-race double in 2002/03.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL? As a Group 2 it is only one rung from the top of flat racing’s ladder.
ANY OVERSEAS INTEREST?
Criquette Head
Criquette Head won the race four times for France in 1982, 1987, 1996 and 2009 and Pascal Bary (2007) and Philippe Sogorb (2013) added two more for our cross-channel cousins. Irish-trained fillies have won the race six times, courtesy of Dermot Weld (1977), Vincent O’Brien (1981 & 1990), Jim Bolger (1984) and Ger Lyons (2011). Aidan O’Brien finally broke his duck in this contest in 2018 as the smart sprinting filly, Fairlyland, held off The Mackem Bullet in a thriller. The hopes of the Emerald Isle rest with two contenders this afternoon; Sussex Garden for Jessica Harrington and the Ken Condon-trained Miss Amulet.
WHERE NEXT?
The next obvious target following a big run in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes is the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Run over the same distance, eleven fillies since 1974 have added a Rowley Mile victory to their already impressive resumes - Cry of Truth (1974), Pasty (1975), Devon Ditty (1978), Mrs Penny (1979), Dead Certain (1989), Queen’s Logic (2001), Carry On Katie (2003), Hooray (2010), Rosdhu Queen (2012), Tiggy Wiggy (2014) and 2018’s winner, Fairyland. 20
Fairyland
LEADING TRAINERS?
Richard Hannon Senior
Richard Hannon Senior leads the way with five victories courtesy of Enstone Spark (1977), Only Yours (1990), Niche (1992), Infamous Angel (2008) & Best Terms (2011). In his first season in sole charge Richard Hannon Junior added a sixth family winner with Tiggy Wiggy in 2014 but isn’t represented today. Mick Channon has saddled four winners of this race, but is another absent in this funny season, so William Haggas could reduce that gap if Sacred can provide him with his third Lowther.
LEADING RIDER? Harry Carr, Ron Hutchinson, Lester Piggott & Richard Hughes share the honour of having won the race three times but all are retired now. The last three jockeys to win the race, Daniel Tudhope, James Doyle and Ryan Moore, all try to make it two today with Noorban, Miss Amulet and Sussex Garden respectively.
RECORD BREAKER
Tiggy Wiggy’s winning time of 1m 8.90s in 2014 was not only the fastest for this race but also smashed the six furlongs course record. In comparison, Soar’s victory in 2004 came in a time of 1m 15.90s - exactly seven seconds slower. In her defence the ground was much softer that year. With a very strong field lining up here today, the record could well be in jeopardy.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Since 1974, the prize has remained in Yorkshire just four times. However, in recent times, Yorkshire lead the way with three of the last four winners trained in the county. Richard Fahey took the prize home to Malton in 2016 with Queen Kindly and saddles Umm Kulthum this afternoon, while the trophy went to Middleham in 2017, after Mark Johnston’s Threading again boosted Yorkshire’s record in the race. He’s not represented today but Karl Burke’s Living In The Past returned the trophy to Middleham last year and he bids for a repeat with She’s So Nice. Kevin Ryan and David O’Meara also have chances with Bellissime and Hala Hala Hala for the former and Noorban for the latter.
We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a 5-year partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of a dozen races this week; including the Ebor.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SACRED confirmed the promise that she displayed on debut when only finding one too good in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last time. The daughter of Exceed And Excel remains open to improvement and she sets the standard in this contest. Santosha is an obvious threat following her recent win in the Princess Margaret Stakes, while Hala Hala Hala was not far behind her on that occasion. Miss Amulet and Sussex Garden are two interesting raiders from Ireland.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION THE SKY BET GREAT VOLTIGEUR (GROUP 2)
THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL (GROUP 1)
We saw a sensational performance by the William Muir-trained Pyledriver as demolished his rivals to take his second Group 2 triumph this season and stake his claim for the St Leger.
A fittingly world-class winner for one of the world’s best races Ghaiyyath made all in dominant style for his third Group 1 victory of the season.
Held up initially behind the pacesetter Subjectivist, the three-year-old son of Harbour Watch always looked comfortable, travelling strongly through the contest under jockey Martin Dwyer despite carrying a 3lb penalty for that previous win at this level. As the field turned for home, Dwyer began to make stealthy headway on his powerful mount but two furlongs from home, they were almost eight in a line with plenty looking like they had a chance. However, Pyledriver soon put that notion to bed, quickening smartly and skipping into a two-length lead entering the final furlong. Despite the best chasing efforts of Highland Chief and the well-fancied Mogul, they couldn’t reel him back in despite carrying 3lb less weight and Pyledriver bolted clear to win by three and a half lengths at the line. It was a bonafide Group 1 performance from a horse bought back for just 10,000 guineas at the sales and his jockey was bullish about him afterwards: “He was a Group 1 horse running in a Group 2”, said Dwyer. The sponsors, Sky Bet, cut Pyledriver to 5/1 for the season’s closing Classic and on this evidence, he’ll certainly be a big player at Doncaster.

As is his way, the powerful five-year-old quickly made his way to the head of affairs as the gates opened and settled into his rhythm nicely under William Buick. Tattersalls Musidora winner, Rose Of Kildare, was his closest pursuer early on, with Magical, Lord North and Kameko settled in behind, conserving energy for a shot at the Charlie Appleby-trained leader late on. However, it was soon apparent as the field turned for home that the son of Dubawi was not stopping and the chasing pack were soon well off the bridle in pursuit of a horse that had already gone a good gallop and was picking up again. Entering the final furlong, the game was up for the rest as Ghaiyyath galloped on relentlessly, three lengths clear of top-class, but tired rivals crossing the line and a fourth career Group 1 victory, perhaps his best so far, was secured. “It is an honour to have a horse like this on our hands and what a fantastic ride by William”, said trainer Appleby, “he got into a lovely rhythm and coming up the straight the others came to challenge, but I was always confident.” Ghaiyyath is now a best-priced 6/1 shot for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp in October.

PRINCES, LORDS & LADIES THE DARLEY YORKSHIRE OAKS When Frankie Dettori pushed the wonder mare Enable clear of her old rival Magical to land the Darley Yorkshire Oaks for the second time a year ago, she was ending a 5 year sequence of wins by the Classic generation in the oldest of the three Group 1’s that headline the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. The Prince Khalid Abdullah owned superstar had also won in her own classic season of 2017 whilst the 2018 renewal, memorably went to the William Haggas trained Sea of Class, who had earlier triumphed in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks at The Curragh.
Sea The Stars
The origins of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks can be traced back to the middle of the 19th Century - in fact it was in 1861 that a horse called Brown Duchess won, and became the first to complete the Epsom and Knavesmire Oaks double. But it was in the early 1990’s that the whole standing of the race changed when it was opened up to older Fillies and Mares. It became a clash of the generations and rocketed to Group 1 status, becoming a must watch for racing fans worldwide. The record of Newmarket trainers is formidable and it has not been won by a Yorkshire-trained thoroughbred in modern times. Sir Michael Stoute’s amazing 9 winners - the most recent Quiff in 2005 - in the race include back to back heroine Islington, while Luca Cumani saddled the other horse to win it two years running - Only Royale in 1993/4.
Luca Cumani 28
Sir Michael Stoute Jim Bolger
Ireland - with Jim Bolger runners noticeably successful - has won its fair share of Darley Yorkshire Oaks in recent decades, but two of the most notable winners have come in the same ownership - Jockey Jimmy Fortune enjoyed one of his finest hours in the saddle on Dar Re Mi in 2009 trained by John Gosden for Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber and four years later the same colours and same connections were back in the winners enclosure, this time with William Buick doing the steering on The Fugue. Dar Re Mi
The Fugue
The Darley Yorkshire Oaks has long sat in the perfect place in the programme - after the classics and before the big Autumn International races. Even though, for well chronicled reasons the classsics were run later than usual this year - the gap to the Knavesmire remains as inviting as ever! KNAVESMIRE TIP DEVIOUS COMPANY boasts the strongest level of form having placed in a duo of Group 2 races at Newmarket and Goodwood over 7f. Providing the drop in trip isn’t an issue, he has a fair amount in hand over the opposition. Happy Romance won the Super Sprint at Newbury on her latest start, with Tinochio back in fourth, and she warrants plenty of respect at 6f for the first time, while others worthy of consideration include Uncle Jumbo and Fools Rush In.

Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to US bound connections. Understandably, any travel and quarantine restrictions issued in response to the pandemic will need to be observed. As an indication of how highly the York contest is regarded worldwide, it is one of only nine UK races to have been provided with this bonus, including all three Group One races this week.

DOUBLING UP DOWN UNDER
Whilst Australia’s premier racecourse might be more than 10,500 miles from York, operating in a different hemisphere; the links between the Knavesmire and Flemington are actually very close. Not only do the teams at the two venues regularly share best practice but their signature contests are interwoven by the participants. As recently as last year, three thoroughbreds graced both the Sky Bet Ebor and the Lexus Melbourne Cup; with the Charlie Fellowes trained, Prince of Arran, being placed second in “the race that stops the nation” after a top ten finish at York.
Prince of Arran
What’s more, in three of the last four renewals of the Lexus Melbourne Cup the Sky Bet Ebor winner has made the top ten. Though the current Covid-19 crisis will add further to the challenge of doing the double in 2020, there have been a couple of near misses in recent times. Both Heartbreak City in 2016 and Purple Moon in 2007, headed down under as champions to find only one better in their bid for a famous double.
Heartbreak City (r)
Purple Moon (r)
The two courses offer valuable prize money and are widely regarded as a proper test of the racehorse, so it is not easy to land a major prize at either never mind, both. That honour so nearly went the way of Rekindling, who gave Joseph O’Brien a first major success in the Melbourne Cup of that November having been placed fourth in the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes in the northern hemisphere in the May of 2017.

Cross Counter
FUN TIMES REMEMBERED As well as the star horses, the same sense of fun is shared by the occasions that host the feature races. Last year, York Racecourse was honoured to be the only European host to the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its charitable global tour. Over a memorable few days, the unique trophy was the star of numerous racegoers selfies as well as visiting racing yards and the East Yorkshire village that shares its name. Though for many followers on Social media, it was the appearance with the irrepressible Yorkshire Terriers that captured their hearts.
A year later and Cross Counter gave the Godolphin operation their first victory at Flemington, however the Charlie Appleby trailblazer had only managed a close up second on the Knavesmire in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur of that August. It had been the opposite way around for Max Dynamite in 2015, when the Ricci family owned gelding partnered Frankie Dettori into the York Winner’s Enclosure in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, to just miss out in Australia, behind Prince of Penzance. In more than quarter of a century since Vintage Crop so memorably became the first European trained of Melbourne’s big race, only two other raiders have come home with the famous three-handled trophy. Whether any of this week’s champions will join that elite list, only time can tell, but York has certainly been an important part of the career of many who have already come close. About One Mile (1,600 metres) See page 79 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for 3-y-o+ horses, run over a mile. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best in past performance will be the highest rated, Qaysar here, and so will carry more weight. If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP David O’Meara holds all the aces here and it could be PROMPTING who is best of his quartet as he looks to make it four on the bounce. He is unbeaten since joining the handler and beat off a field of seasoned campaigners when scoring at Goodwood last time. Stablemate Firmament won this in 2016 and was back to his best over 7f here recently, while Orbaan and Shelir cannot be dismissed. Top Rank is yet to taste defeat and is a must for the shortlist, with Sir Busker and Montatham both arriving on the back of some fine efforts this term.

KNAVESMIRE LEG SAKHEE
NDS
Sakhee rightly deserves the title ‘Knavesmire legend’ following his brace of York victories in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes in 2000 and the Juddmonte International a year later. Home-bred by Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Shadwell Farm operation, Sakhee was always destined for success being by Bahri, a dual Group 1 winner who finished second behind the mighty Halling in the 1995 Juddmonte International at York, out of Thawakib, a Sadler’s Wells mare who won the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1993 and finished sixth in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks. John Dunlop had trained both his sire and dam so seemed the logical training choice but all did not quite go to plan on his racecourse debut as, despite being well-fancied, he could only manage fourth in a Leicester maiden. He quickly made amends and justified his big race entries with an easy victory just a few junctions up the M1 at Nottingham to shed his maiden tag; followed by another facile success in a Sandown conditions race to round off his juvenile campaign. Heading into his Classic season, Sakhee wasn’t an obvious Derby candidate but he shot to prominence with another victory at Sandown in the Group 3 Classic Trial. His credentials were further put to the test in the Group 2 Dante Stakes where he re-opposed Pawn Broker and took on Godolphin’s Best Of The Bests in a quality renewal. Partnered by Richard Hills, Sakhee hit the front with a furlong to run and, despite hanging markedly inside the final furlong, ran out a convincing winner.
Following more than a year off the track, Sakhee switched hands to Godolphin and joined trainer Saeed bin Suroor. He resumed winning ways with victory in the Listed Steventon Stakes at Newbury before heading to the Knavesmire and destroying a strong field in the Group 1 Juddmonte International . With Frankie Dettori now in the saddle, the four-year-old showed his devastating turn of foot as he hit the accelerator over a furlong out and cruised to a seven-length success. He rounded off his campaign with another superb display as he made a mockery of the rest of the field in the Group 1 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe as he recorded a straightforward six-length victory. Although he never quite reached the same heights again on course, Sakhee continues to have a big role to play off the track as a leading sire. His star-studded progeny include Presvis, a winner of more than £4m in prize money, Darley July Cup winner Sakhee’s Secret, Sky Bet Ebor runner-up Rosika and Samuel, winner of a Listed stayers’ race at the Knavesmire back in 2008.
On the day at Epsom, he was sent off as 4/1 second favourite with only the late Sir Henry Cecil’s Beat Hollow ahead of him in the betting. Hills made a bold bid for home three furlongs out and kicked clear. It soon became apparent that this was now a two-horse race as Sakhee and Irish raider Sinndar surged away from the rest of the field. John Dunlop’s charge couldn’t quite sustain his finishing burst and finished a length behind Sinndar with Beat Hollow well back in third. His final start in 2000 came in the Group 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes back at Sandown where he may have still been feeling the effects of his lung-bursting effort in the Derby as the 7/4 favourite could only manage to finish fourth.
Prince Khalid Abdullah chats to Frankie Dettori after Sakhee’s success in the Juddmonte International. 51
Darley’s Dubawi, the finest stallion ever to have stood at stud in Britain, by just about any measure you wish to choose: Group winners, Stakes winners, Stakes horses and G1 winners. He’s the only British stallion ever to sire more than 100 Group winners — and his total has already raced up to 120.

A horse to look up to. From Champion two-year-olds to Champions at five. They’re brilliant and resilient. Auction fame has followed: he’s sired Europe’s top-priced European yearling in four of the last five years. The best of our sport. The best of the breed. Now with the best of his sons at Darley, too.

The Darley Yorkshire Oaks
FACT FILE: A BRIEF HISTORY? MULTIPLE WINNERS?
Obviously before 1971 there couldn’t have been as the race was only open to three-year-old fillies. But since then Only Royale (1993 & 1994) and Islington (2002 & 2003) have both secured back-to-back victories, while Enable won the race as both a three and five-year-old in 2017 and 2019 respectively.
Distance One mile and four furlongs (2,400m)
Prize money £250,000
The race was established in 1849, when it was originally restricted to fillies aged three. When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Darley Yorkshire Oaks was classed at Group 1 level - the highest grade of race. The race was opened up to older fillies and mares in 1991.
ISN’T THE OAKS RUN AT EPSOM?
The name ‘Oaks’ tends to lend its name to all top class races for fillies. The Yorkshire Oaks often features fillies which previously ran in the Oaks at Epsom. The first to achieve victory in both races was Brown Duchess in 1861, and the most recent was Enable in 2017.
FIRST WINNER?
Alexandrova
The inaugural running in 1849 was won by Ellen Middleton, owned by the 2nd Earl of Zetland. However, the first winner of the race as we know it now was Magnificent Star in 1991.
IRISH RAIDERS?
Since the early ‘70s fillies trained in Ireland have had their fair share of success. Paddy Prendergast won with Sarah Siddons in 1976 before Jim Bolger added another with Condessa in 1981. After a barren spell, John Oxx added further success with Key Change in 1996 before Aidan O’Brien secured back-to-back victories with Alexandrova & Peeping Fawn in 2006-2007. Jim Bolger made it an Irish hat-trick with Lush Lashes in 2008 and Aidan O’Brien added his third victory with Tapestry in 2014. Recent Irish domination continued in 2015 with victory for Jim Bolger’s Pleascach and Aidan O’Brien almost saddled the 1-2 in 2016 with the brilliant pair of Seventh Heaven and Found. Love represents the County Tipperary outfit who are in search of their fifth victory in the race, while One Voice runs for Jessica Lush Lashes Harrington. 54
LEADING TRAINERS?
The 19th century trainer Matthew Dawson shares top spot with Sir Michael Stoute with nine winners each, but the master of Freemason Lodge doesn’t have a representative in the race today.
Sir Michael Stoute
Aidan O’Brien recorded his fourth win in the race in 2016 with Seventh Heaven and will be hopeful of making it five this afternoon with Love. John Gosden has four Darley Yorkshire Oaks’ on his CV after Enable’s victory last year and Franconia or Frankly Darling could help him make it five.
LEADING RIDER? The legendary Fred Archer holds the record having won this race on 8 occasions. Of those jockeys around today, Frankie Dettori tops the charts with four victories to date, but he’s not riding here today, so Ryan Moore could reduce the gap if winning his second Yorkshire Oaks on Love and the same goes for James Doyle who partners Franconia.
SING WHEN YOU’RE WINNING! Lord Lloyd-Webber has won the Darley Yorkshire Oaks twice. First with Dar Re Mi in 2009 and again with The Fugue in 2013.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Fred Archer
EUROPEAN RAIDERS?
Italian Valfredo Valiani landed the honours in 2001 with Super Tassa. Frenchman Alain de Royer-Dupré added further international flavour when Shareta stormed to victory in 2012 in the same colours worn by Eziyra today. Unsurprisingly, there are no contenders hailing from Continental Europe today.
Darley are one the world’s leading breeding and racing organisations. With operations around the globe including Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and Kildangan Stud in Ireland, Darley have stood some of racings most influential stallions including the likes of Dubawi, Sharmardal and New Approach to name just three.

AGE Three-year-olds would appear to be the age group to concentrate on as they have won 18 of the 29 renewals since the race was opened up to older fillies in 1991. The victory of Sea Of Class in 2018 saw them edge ahead 6-4 in terms of the last decade and the fact that the ‘Classic Generation’ receives a 9lb weight allowance from their older rivals probably has something to do with their overall dominance. TRAINERS Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden have four wins each in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, and with three of the six runnners this afternoon hailing from these two trainers, their strong records are highly likely to be boosted once again. RECENT FORM Whilst just over half half of the last ten winners arrived here on the back of a win, three fillies had finished second, which confirms the fact that a filly needs to be at the top of her game coming into the race. Taking the recent form angle a little further we see that all of the last ten winners had contested a Group 1 on their last start showing that you need to be a top-class performer to go close.

KEY RACES With three-year-olds holding sway it isn’t surprising that the Epsom Oaks has provided a number of winners of this race although suprisingly only Alexandrova and 2017’s winner Enable have completed the double in recent years. The Juddmonte Irish Oaks also stands up well, probably as there are only five weeks between the two races making it much easier for a trainer to keep his filly in tip-top condition. Only 8 of the last 18 Irish Oaks winners made their way to the Knavesmire, but seven of those went on to record the double. BETTING Those towards the head of the betting are more often than not the group to focus on. In the last thirteen years there have been eight winning favourites and four second favourites, with the two longest priced winners being Tapestry and Pleascach who were both sent off at 8/1. KEY TRENDS Focus on the three-year-olds Top two finish last time Ran at Epsom or The Curragh
Enable CONCLUSION A superb renewal of this famous contest and the brilliant LOVE may be the answer. A runaway winner of both the QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Oaks at Epsom, she stands out as one of the very best of her generation, male or female, and it will take a special performance to stop her recording her third Group 1 in a row for Aidan O'Brien. Three daughters of the great Frankel oppose her and of the three, perhaps it will fall to Frankly Darling to provide the stiffest challenge. She didn't handle the unique undulations of Epsom last time, yet still managed to finish third, so, returned to this more conventional track, she could close the gap on the dual Classic winner. One Voice ran a cracker behind Fancy Blue in the Nassau at Goodwood three weeks ago and shouldn't be underestimated up in trip. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. THE DARLEY YORKSHIRE OAKS
KNAVESMIRE TIP LOVE was impressive when making a winning return in the 1000 Guineas then went to another level when hacking up in the Investec Oaks at Epsom last time. She appears to tick every box and can complete a hat-trick of big-race victories. John Gosden has no Enable this year but recent course Listed winner Franconia and Frankly Darling both have a chance for the master trainer. The latter didn’t appear to handle Epsom when well beaten by the favourite latest but can close the gap at least on this more conventional track.

BLOODSTOCK DARLEY
H
EROES
Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. Coming up to date and Darley, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Darley was founded in 1981 when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum purchased Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. It forms the bloodstock arm of an enthusiasm for racing that also created Godolophin (yes, the third foundation stallion) as the racing wing. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proven themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Dubai Millennium feel a weight of expectation on their withers. Some, like this track superstar only had a brief time to pass on their genes, so it is all the more poignant to enjoy the success of their progeny. Based at Dalham Hall, the success of this operation can be seen with Dubai Millennium’s greatest son, Dubawi. He landed Group 1s at two and three including successes in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Prix Jacques Le Marois during his Classic campaign. Since beginning his own stallion career in 2006, his reputation has continued to grow, becoming the fastest sire ever to reach 50 Group winners and has more Group winners than any other stallion at the same stage in their careers. Also standing at Dalham Hall Stud alongside Dubawi is Investec Derby winner, New Approach, who has already
Dubawi 60
continued the family tradition by siring superstars of his own - Dawn Approach was a Champion two-year-old and a 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace winner at three, while Masar emulated his sire by winning the 2017 Derby. As a sign of the modern world, Darley are a global operation with their stallion stations in Ireland and France providing plenty of familiar names to European tracks. Kildangan Stud in County Kildare plays host to another fine roster that has recently been boosted by Blue Point, a sprinter who came to prominence winning the Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack here at York prior to four Group One victories. The late Shamardal, who won the 2005 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot at York, did stand there before he was lost this year, but his legacy lives on through the hundreds of classy offspring to have represented him. Golden Horn, who carries on the line of another great Darley stallion, Cape Cross, now stands at Dalham Hall and is having success in his own successful stallion career. Haras du Logis in Normandy also plays a vital role in the Darley story and hosts a raft of Group 1 winners such as Derby and Juddmonte International winner of 2007, Authorized who sired 2016 Derby winner Harzand. When considering the enthusiasm of their founder, it is little wonder that they continue to produce racehorses of the highest order year after year.

A TRIBUTE TO SIR HENRY CECIL
JOHN SEXTON REFLECTS ON ONE OF THE GREATS It seems barely credible that seven years have passed since the racing world lost one of its true giants with the passing of trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, who is remembered today with the six running of the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes. Throughout his 44-year career, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival always played a significant role in Sir Henry’s plans each season and Warren Place winners abounded on the Knavesmire each August, including three in the race which now bears his name. It was not until 1986 that Sir Henry broke his duck in the EBF Galtres Stakes with Startino, but a second winner quickly followed when Upend, owned and bred by the former Newmarket chairman Peter Player, beat the favourite Percy’s Lass by a rather cosy half-length. Sir Henry’s third and final winner of the EBF Galtres Stakes was Eva Luna, who had the advantage of a trademark ride from Pat Eddery, another legend racing has lost all too soon, as they out battled Sir Michael Stoute’s Time Allowed, himself under a great ride from John Reid. As with many of his top horses, Eva Luna was owned and bred by Prince Khalid Abdullah, the filly did not make her racecourse debut until she was four and was having only the second race of her career that day. In a nomenclature quirk, she was one of two fillies to be named Eva Luna foaled in 1992 – the other was trained by Jim Bolger retired after her classic campaign.
Sir Henry & Lady Cecil enjoy a quieter moment 62
Those three Galtres triumphs, like all his Knavesmire winners, were a source of deep satisfaction on a racecourse he loved, in a county that was very dear to his heart. Few would dispute that Sir Henry Cecil was the greatest British trainer of the 20th Century. Twenty-five British Classics, six more in Ireland, seventy-five Royal Ascot winners, the first man to saddle 3,000 winners on the Flat in Britain and the first British trainer to win the French Derby, all testify to his brilliance. He learned his trade from two masters, growing up first as the step-son of Royal trainer Captain Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and then as son-in-law of Sir Noel Murless, the outstanding British-based trainer of the 1960’s. They were hard acts to follow, but Sir Henry was to add that magical and indefinable quality which took him from very good to brilliant. It could have been the patience and attention to detail that he learnt tending his rose garden or simply that his natural ease and relaxed demeanour transmitted to his horses.
Midday, carrying the Juddmonte colours, becomes Sir Henry’s fifth Darley Yorkshire Oaks winner
Whatever the reason, Cecil’s innate ability, coupled with the quality of horse he could attract to Warren Place, his base from 1977, meant his runners dominated the championship races. From Royal Ascot to York; from Newmarket to Goodwood, Cecil ruled supreme. Like Alec Taylor in the early part of the 20th Century, Cecil’s was not a betting yard, but very much a yard to bet on, making him the trainer of choice with punters up and down the land. In the golden summer of 1987, Cecil won one of his ten Trainers’ Championships with 180 winners, an unheard of tally in those days before Sunday fixtures and all-weather racing expanded the programme book. It was achieved between March and November and with barely a handicap winner among them. So many of his horses were pattern race standard that a Cecil runner in a handicap was treated like the Holy Grail by punters. That was why much excitement surrounded the appearance of the Cecil-trained Kneller in the Betfred Ebor of 1988. With an Eddery aboard again, this time Paul not Pat, a 9-1 win resulted, a handy return for a horse whose next two races were victories in the Doncaster and the Jockey Club Cups! But then, York was always good to Sir Henry, just as he was always good to York. He loved the Knavesmire for its fairness. He mingled freely with racegoers and always seemed to have time to talk despite amassing some 137 winners at the track. Congratulate him on a winner and almost inevitably he would turn, cock his head to one side in his trademark pose and ask what you thought of the horse and the race. More importantly, he would then listen attentively to the answer. And there were many chances for congratulation at York. His seven winners in the Betfred Dante still stands as a record for the race as does his nine victories in the Tattersalls Musidora.
while three of the Musidora stars, Diminuendo, Snow Bride and Reams of Verse added an Oaks. Consider five winners of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, spanning the decades from Connaught Bridge in 1979 to Midday in 2010 and it seems the case is proven. But there is more to weigh. Add into the big race mix, four winners of the Juddmonte International spread over nearly forty years from Wollow in 1976 to Frankel in 2012, plus four more colts in the Betway Great Voltigeur, as well as a couple of Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack triumphs and you get a taste of what the Knavesmire meant to Sir Henry, prizes to be aimed for, regardless of the gender of the thoroughbred. Celestial Cloud set the ball rolling at Ripon in May 1969, the first of 3,431 worldwide victories. His last winner here was First Mohican, the opening victor of York’s 2013 season. He started favourite, of course, making it apt that Sir Henry’s first and last winners were in his beloved Yorkshire. His last runner at York was Ace of Valhalla just two weeks before his passing. Those names will probably drift into obscurity with the passing of the years, unlike that of Frankel, whose truly astounding win in the 2012 Juddmonte International is indelibly imprinted in the minds of all who saw it. Knighted for services to the sport in 2011, it was fitting that Sir Henry Cecil’s last big race win at York should be with Frankel. Was he the greatest horse who ever raced? Very possibly. Hugely impressive though Mark Johnston’s record haul truly is, was Sir Henry Cecil the greatest British trainer of all time? Quite probably. Both legendary horse and trainer now have permanent markers in their honour at York with a life size statue and a set of wrought iron gates respectively. It is little wonder then that the spontaneous appeal for “three cheers for Sir ‘enry” was greeted so rapturously around the Winner’s Enclosure that August; he may have loved York, but York also loved him.
It was always said that he was better with fillies than colts, which may be more a relative than an absolute assessment, given his total of eighteen 1000 Guineas and Oaks winners is double that of his nine 2000 Guineas and Derby champions. His York winners seem to support the point, with one of his seven Dante winners, the 1987 hero Reference Point winning the Investec Derby,

One Mile About Four Furlongs (2,400 metres) See page 79 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Again part of the Pattern pyramid, this Listed race is for 3-y-o+ fillies and mares. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Tough to win, harder to pick the winner, perhaps pay close attention to the television coverage of the Parade Ring before investing your cash.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Search For A Song (IRE) Trainer: Dermot Weld Jockey: Oisin Murphy Age/Weight: 3-8-12 Runners: 10 ran Price: 3/1F Irish raider, Search For A Song, made her trip worthwhile as the three-year-old filly took this Listed contest in authoritative style, drawing two lengths clear of Vivionn and Spirit Of Appin inside the final furlong.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Vivionn looks a solid starting point as she bids to go one better than when second in this race 12 months ago, though she no longer benefits from a weight-for-age allowance and the Classic generation have won nine of the last 10 runnings of this contest. It may thus be worth taking a chance on ALBAFLORA, who lost little in defeat when second in a 1m2f Listed heat here behind an enterprisingly-ridden winner and could improve for this longer trip. Award Scheme, Gold Wand and Lady G are other three-year-olds who make some appeal. Sea of Faith impressed when winning at Salisbury last summer and is another of the older contingent to note.

THE RAY GILPIN AWARD
RAY GILPIN (1942-2015)
FOR THE TOP JOCKEY OF THE WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR FESTIVAL
This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015. A proud welshman, you’ll notice the armband worn by the rider in front, is in scarlet. The colour of the scarf that Ray always wore to the races. Seven different jockeys won yesterday’s seven contests so it’s certainly all to play for.
CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
5
68
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

Distance: Race Type: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:
7f Handicap £30,000 2 Farside
See page 79 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A new race to proceedings so you don’t even have previous trends to help in solving another ticklish handicap. Getting the hang of handicaps? This time it’s two-year-olds only, going seven furlongs in distance. By this stage of the afternoon, some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2-y-o nursery handicaps, even the joint-richest one in the land, having a fair record. Pedigree is the second, more professional “p”.

KNAVESMIRE TIP This appears to be a very strong nursery and the marginal preference is for STAR OF ORION, who made a winning debut at Newmarket in June. Ralph Beckett’s gelding was only denied by a head under a penalty in a novice race over C&D last month and the winner of that contest went on to be fourth in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. Mayaas has displayed promise in both of his previous starts and he could be underestimated off an opening mark of 83, while Mark of The Man and Basilicata complete the shortlist.

7th Race 4.50 The British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Stakes
7f Handicap 0-105 £30,000 3+ f&m Farside
About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres) See page 79 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION On Ladies Day a final all-female competitive handicap, again for 3-y-o and older, this time over seven furlongs. The handicap rating band of 0-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the equally behind closed doors cricketers, a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight; Anna Nerium today. Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name; one such is Excellent Times. Known as “the getting out stakes” in racing circles, it could provide you with a last gasp winner so that you can bask in your success until at least 1.57pm tomorrow.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Excellent Times Trainer: Tim Easterby Jockey: Phil Dennis Age/Weight: 4-8-6 Runners: 19 ran Price: 66/1 Last year’s race ended with a surprise winner as the Tim Easterby-trained Excellent Times stayed on strongly under jockey Phil Dennis to pip a field of smart fillies in the final strides, winning by a head from Agincourt.

KNAVESMIRE TIP LAWAHED arrives with an unexposed profile having got off the mark on her third start at Haydock last month and a mark of 85 appears very workable for this well-bred filly, who is out of a dual Group 1 winner. Dancing Vega returned to the UK with a fine second over C&D and she can enter the reckoning off a 4lb higher mark, while Entrancing, who was runner-up at the track on her penultimate outing, and Anna Nerium appeal most of the remainder.

Night Of Thunder, the best firstseason sire ever with more Group and Listed winners at this stage of his career than any other stallion since Pattern racing began back in 1971. After Royal Ascot, Night Of Thunder had sired 12 first-crop Stakes winners — as many as his sire Dubawi and maternal grandsire Galileo had at the same stage of their careers put together. The sport has, quite simply, never seen anything like it.
