Welcome A very warm welcome to Sky Bet Ebor day from wherever you are following the action. In a difficult year for so many people, we hope the fantastic horseracing action on show this week and again in our most famous race today can bring some joy into our lives. We have enjoyed wonderful displays from our trio of Group One winners already this week, as Ghaiyyath, Love and Battaash have shone brightly. That just leaves the biggest field of all to find the champion in the race that shares its name with the Roman name for our city, the Sky Bet Ebor (Eboracum meaning “place of the wild yew tree”). In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels #EborAtHome. The team at ITV Racing will bring you five races and if you want to follow all the action then Racing TV are covering all the contests. We are incredibly grateful that the connections of such high-quality horses have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. The unstinting support of Sky Bet over the this afternoon, over the past three days as well as during both July and September, is hugely appreciated. By 3.42pm, we will know who has bagged what is still the richest flat handicap in Europe. Some major Newmarket operations have declared fancied runners, for example Roger Varian with Fujaira Prince or Pablo Escobarr from the yard of William Haggas, a stable in hot form on the Knavesmire this year, or even Ghostwatch, a winner over course and distance in his classic season for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin in the Sky Bet Melrose 2018. The understandably reduced size of the Irish raiding party this year means that True Self for Willie Mullins and Pondus for Joseph O’Brien represent the tricolour. A Yorkshire based horse could be to the fore, as Hochfeld and King's Advice represent Britain’s winningmost trainer, Middleham based Mark Johnston. Tim Easterby would love to keep the famous silver trophy in Malton over forty years after Sea Pigeon won it so memorably for his father. Much as the Sky Bet Ebor has benefited from a renewed focus in partnership with its Leeds based sponsors, the same could be said of the Sky Bet City of York Stakes. Recently elevated to Group 2 status, the seven furlong division is very fashionable at the moment, will One Master continue the very successful year on the Knavesmire for William Haggas? A truly memorable afternoon yesterday saw Jim Crowley secure a four-timer to have one hand on the Ray Gilpin Trophy, backed by Sky Bet, for leading rider this week. With Jim already on five winners, rivals Silvestre De Sousa, William Buick and Joe Fanning will need their own dream day to overhaul him with three winners the gap. Crowley is also now just two winners away from his 2,000th career win, perhaps he can reach the milestone this afternoon? The top class racing we have been able to stage this week, with £2.3m in prize money, is only possible due to the steadfast backing of our sponsors, partners, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you have thoroughly enjoyed the racing from the comfort of your armchair this week and today, as we share the thrill of the finale to the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. Have a great Ebor day. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Can you name this rider who has a record five Sky Bet Ebor victories to his name?
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed past success in today’s Sky Bet Ebor from the clues provided? 1. I was born in Cheltenham on April 12, 1946 and as a 14-year-old, even though I had never sat on a horse, I took the advice of my local butcher by writing to local trainer Frenchie Nicholson asking for a job. I was too young and there was no job available, but I was allowed to work at the yard at weekends mucking out and sweeping up, so I would cycle from home and earned a few shillings pocket money for my trouble. I signed up as stable apprentice just after my 15th birthday. 2. I was taught to ride by Frenchie’s son David Nicholson, then a leading jump jockey and though I was not a natural, Frenchie was impressed enough to buy two horses specifically for me to ride. I made my debut on one of them Balle D’Or in 1962 and had my first winner when March Fast won the Hatton Plate at Warwick on September 9, 1963 on an objection. I was champion apprentice in 1964 and 1965 and the first graduate of Frenchie’s riding academy, which produced Pat Eddery among others. 3. In 1966, I won the 1000 Guineas for Vincent O’Brien on Glad Rags and was second on Pretendre in Charlottown’s Derby. I also won the St Leger on Touching Wood in 1982. I had a good record in the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, winning three times on Twelfth Man for Harry Wragg in 1965, Totowah for Michael Jarvis in 1978 and Western Dancer for Con Horgan in 1985. I retired after being badly injured in the infamous pile-up in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster.
YORK’S RACING CHALLENGE
1. The late Geoff Turnbull-owned Lord Glitters marked himself as a horse to follow when winning the 2018 Sky Bet and Symphony Group Strenstall Stakes, but what we want to know is which fellow subsequent Group 1 winner was half a length back in second that day? Can you also remember which Group 1 races were won by both horses this season? 2. The Sky Bet City Of York Stakes was run as a Group 2 for the first time last year and Shine So Bright was the first winner at that level. However, can you name the multiple Group 1-winning mare she defeated and how many top-level races that second-placed mare was successful in? 3. Only one horse has managed to win the Sky Bet Ebor twice, can you name him? Extra credit if you know when he prevailed. 4. Sticking with today’s feature handicap, the links between York and Flemington are many, but which horses have gone closest to winning the Lexus Melbourne Cup, finishing second down under, after taking victory in the Sky Bet Ebor? We’ll need the years too please! 5. Can you name some of this afternoon’s runners from the clues below? A – Bouncy stick, object of many a childhood. B – The word that the 1932-33 Ashes tour of Australia became synonymous with. C – Commas, semi-colons, colons and exclamation marks all fall under this category. D – Notorious son of Colombia, with an extra ‘r’. E – David Blaine and Harry Houdini would be examples of these.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York race-course team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Gimcrack Stakes in late August and the Listed 6F Garrowby Stakes in September. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

KNAVESMIRE TIP LORD GLITTERS won this contest two years ago and it would come as no surprise to see him improve on his last two efforts in Group 2 company now eased in grade. Dark Vision is enjoying a fine season and makes some each-way appeal after overcoming trouble in running to beat Beringer in Listed company at Pontefract last time. Others to bear in mind for the minor money are Zabeel Prince, who won at the top level last season and could be sharper for his comeback run in Ireland, and Certain Lad, who went very close in the John Smith’s Cup.

THE AL BASTI THE COOLMORE EQUIWORLD DUBAI NUNTHORPE GIMCRACK (GROUP 2) (GROUP 1) We may well have seen the making of a new sprinting star on the Knavesmire as Minzaal bolted up in superb style in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack. The Owen Burrows-trained son of Mehmas was slowly into stride behind the pace setting Mohawk King, but travelled sweetly in the rear of the contest for the first few furlongs of the race. As the field approached the two pole, Minzaal loomed up, slicing his way through the field on the bridle and quickening sharply to take the lead just before the final furlong marker. Despite edging right as he hit the front, the Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colt galloped on powerfully under Crowley to record a taking success by two lengths from Devilwala, who stayed on strongly towards the end, pipping Mystery Smiles for second. But it was all about the winner and the trainer was understandably thrilled with his performance; “Jim said he couldn’t believe how easily he was going”, said Burrows. “He said he got there too soon if anything but there was nothing else he could do. I don’t think he needs to be going any further than six furlongs and I’d say the Middle Park Stakes would be the target, he’s got so much speed.” He was introduced as a 14/1 shot for next year's Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and after the trainer confirmed that would be his long-term target, it certainly doesn't take too much to imagine this super colt being worthy of his place in a race of that nature.
RESULT
1st Minzaal 2nd Devilwala 3rd Mystery Smiles 24

Prevailing weather conditions inhibited another track record, but the brilliant Battaash showed his class to win his second Coolmore Nunthorpe and his fourth Group 1 in another excellent performance, capping a 127-1 four-timer for his rider, Jim Crowley. Breaking with his usual zest and immediately getting into his rhythm, Battaash led them up the centre of the track, with the Yorkshire-trained Que Amoro leading the other group up the stands side rail under Paul Mulrennan. With two furlongs to run, the rest of the field were struggling and beginning to fall away and it looked a two-horse race as Battaash and Que Amoro joined battle at the head of affairs. For a moment, it looked as if the Michael Dods-trained filly had the ‘Bat Mobile’ in a bit of trouble, but Hamdan Al Maktoum’s charge showed great heart, quickening and battling on bravely to better the filly to whom he was giving 3lb. The great sprinter pulled away buy a length at the line and stopped the clock at 57.38s, with Que Amoro boxing on well after a fantastic run to secure second and a fellow Yorkshiretrained contender, Moss Gill, gave trainer James Bethell an excellent never-nearer third. It was Crowley’s fourth victory in a row in the famous blue and white colours and he bacame the first rider since Philip Makin on John Smith’s Cup day in 2015 to record four winners on the same card at York. "He's an amazing horse and we're lucky to have him about," said the jockey, "he had to dig very deep and the second was very hard to pass. He stuck his neck out and wanted it. It's fantastic for the whole team."
RESULT
1st Battaash 2nd Que Amoro 3rd Moss Gill

PRINCES, PIGEONS & TIGERS THE SKY BET EBOR It says much for the standing of the Sky Bet Ebor that many consider it still as the marquee race of the Festival, after all they share a name. The Ebor, first run in 1843, is one of the world’s great handicaps, even in this strange year it remains the richest to be run on the flat, so here are a few facts as to why it retains that place of affection in the hearts of both punters and the bookies. Since the turn of the millennium, only one Jockey has won it more than once - take a bow, Jamie Spencer.
Luca Cumani
Jamie Spencer
Across the same two decades, only one trainer saddled more than one winner - Luca Cumani who also won it in 1999. Saeed Bin Suroor’s name appears twice but his second win was in the substitute race at Newbury in that notably wet year! Uniting our factoids, the last favourite to win the race was one of those from Bedford House Stables, Purple Moon, under the County Tipperary born former champ, back in 2007. Since then only one horse, Tiger Cliff, has won at a single figure SP.
Purple Moon

Sea Pigeon
Three of the last six winners have been trained in Ireland. In short, it has all the ingredients you need for a lottery! But get talking to almost any racing fan in Yorkshire about the Ebor, and they will take your mind back to 1979 - a race watched exclusively by those on the Knavesmire due to an ITV strike. It was probably the most memorable of all such handicaps, as it featured Sea Pigeon, Champion Hurdler and lumbered with carrying ten stone in trying to land Yorkshire’s iconic race for Peter Easterby. Regular rider, Jonjo O’Neill, had been passed fit despite breaking three toes added to the build-up atmosphere. To hear the tales, it seems almost all the residents of God’s own county was on and when the Pigeon struck the front, the Knavesmire management team probably worried if the roof of the main stand would stay on. Yet with every stride Donegal Prince was closing under Philip Robinson’s urgings. They flashed past the post in unison. It was an agonising wait - O’Neill disappeared for fear of what would happen if the call went against him, but when finally, ‘First Number One’ crackled across the PA system; bedlam erupted. Yorkshire’s finest had won Yorkshire’s best. A decade later and Sapience obliged for another great Yorkshire character, Jimmy Fitzgerald; then came an early big race winner in a now glittering career for Mark Johnston in 1992 courtesy of Quick Ransom. A Yorkshire yard provided more memorable scenes as Far Ahead landed the renewal of 1997 for Les Eyre. A lean spell has followed for the White Rose County, broken only in 2011 when Brian Ellison’s Moyenne Corniche won the big prize maybe 2020 will herald a new decade of success? THE RAY GILPIN AWARD
RAY GILPIN (1942-2015)
FOR THE TOP JOCKEY OF THE WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR FESTIVAL
This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015. A proud welshman, you’ll notice the armband worn by the rider in front, is in scarlet. The colour of the scarf that Ray always wore to the races. Going into the final day, Jim Crowley has one hand on the trophy after his sensational four-timer yesterday, with a trio of challengers three wins behind.

2nd Race 2.25 The Sky Bet Melrose Stakes (Heritage Handicap) One Mile About Six Furlongs (2,800 metres) See page 71 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for just three-year-olds run over a mile and three quarters. The winner is the first to qualify for the Sky Bet Ebor of 2021 subject to the terms of the Race to the Ebor programmes. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The horse considered by the handicapper as the best, on past performance, will carry the most weight; Mambo Nights today. Listen to the experts on ITV Racing to form a view.

KNAVESMIRE TIP FAVORITE MOON confirmed the promise that he displayed as a two-year-old when arguably an unlucky second on his seasonal return at Doncaster in June. The son of Sea The Moon then accounted for Subjectivist in a handicap at Haydock, with the pair pulling eight lengths clear of the third, and the second has gone on finish third in the Gordon Stakes. Midnights Legacy’s only defeat to date came on debut and the dual Haydock winner could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Coltrane is another unexposed type who may have more to offer.

WHAT HAVE A STAND, A RACE AND A COCKTAIL BAR GOT IN COMMON? The answer is that all of the above are named for a certain James Melrose. Alderman, Lord Mayor, Land Agent, Football Referee, Racecourse Chairman - this remarkable man packed all these roles in to his more than century of life in York. The Cocktail Bar? DOUBLING UP DOWN UNDER
Whilst Australia’s premier racecourse might be more than 10,500 miles from York, operating in a different hemisphere; the links between the Knavesmire and Flemington are actually very close. Not only do the teams at the two venues regularly share best practice but their signature contests are interwoven by the participants. As recently as last year, three thoroughbreds graced both the Sky Bet Ebor and the Lexus Melbourne Cup; with the Charlie Fellowes trained, Prince of Arran, being placed second in “the race that stops the nation” after a top ten finish at York.
Prince of Arran
What’s more, in three of the last four renewals of the Lexus Melbourne Cup the Sky Bet Ebor winner has made the top ten. Though the current Covid-19 crisis will add further to the challenge of doing the double in 2020, there have been a couple of near misses in recent times. Both Heartbreak City in 2016 and Purple Moon in 2007, headed down under as champions to find only one better in their bid for a famous double.
Heartbreak City (r)
Purple Moon (r)
The two courses offer valuable prize money and are widely regarded as a proper test of the racehorse, so it is not easy to land a major prize at either never mind, both. That honour so nearly went the way of Rekindling, who gave Joseph O’Brien a first major success in the Melbourne Cup of that November having been placed fourth in the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes in the northern hemisphere in the May of 2017.

Cross Counter
FUN TIMES REMEMBERED As well as the star horses, the same sense of fun is shared by the occasions that host the feature races. Last year, York Racecourse was honoured to be the only European host to the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its charitable global tour. Over a memorable few days, the unique trophy was the star of numerous racegoers selfies as well as visiting racing yards and the East Yorkshire village that shares its name. Though for many followers on Social media, it was the appearance with the irrepressible Yorkshire Terriers that captured their hearts.
A year later and Cross Counter gave the Godolphin operation their first victory at Flemington, however the Charlie Appleby trailblazer had only managed a close up second on the Knavesmire in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur of that August. It had been the opposite way around for Max Dynamite in 2015, when the Ricci family owned gelding partnered Frankie Dettori into the York Winner’s Enclosure in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, to just miss out in Australia, behind Prince of Penzance. In more than quarter of a century since Vintage Crop so memorably became the first European trained of Melbourne’s big race, only two other raiders have come home with the famous three-handled trophy. Whether any of this week’s champions will join that elite list, only time can tell, but York has certainly been an important part of the career of many who have already come close. KNAVESMIRE LEG SERGEANT CECIL
NDS
The British public love an underdog and Sergeant Cecil was certainly that. Sergeant Cecil was bred in the South West of England, a metaphorical million miles from the breeding epicentre of Newmarket. He was the first foal of Jadidh, a modest hurdle winner, by the less than fashionable stallion King’s Signet but despite these humble beginnings he soon found an owner in Terry Cooper. Interviewed following Sergeant Cecil’s victory in the 2007 Matchbook Yorkshire Cup, Cooper said of his purchase: “I liked his mother, Jadidh. She was a lovely mare and I always thought I’d like to have her first foal. I first saw Sergeant Cecil when he was three weeks old and bought him at six months. I’d rather not say how much I paid. It was a private sale but he wasn’t expensive.” Initially, Sergeant Cecil was in training with Seamus Mullins and he made a rather inauspicious start to his career, failing to land a blow from six starts. In the summer of 2002 he joined the ranks of Rod Millman’s Devon-based team but even then he failed to win, although he was placed in six races. In May 2003, he finally lost his maiden tag at Sandown over 1m6f. At this point he was still only officially rated 79 but the bandwagon had started to roll. Over the next couple of seasons he equipped himself well in handicaps but it was 2005 when he really hit the big time. Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate was his first major scalp and although he was beaten next time at Goodwood the vibes were strong as he lined up for the Sky Bet Ebor at The Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival. Always a hugely competitive race, our hero was positioned at the back of the field by Alan Munro through the early stages. As the field turned into the home straight the pair began to make relentless progress. As his rivals sent out distress signals, Sergeant Cecil appeared to become stronger the further he went. When he saw daylight
inside the closing stages he surged to the front to win by a length from Carte Diamond, earning a place in the history books as the first winner of the Northumberland Plate and the Sky Bet Ebor in the same year since 1911. The third leg in his record-breaking season came in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket. A mammoth field of 34 went to post but this redoubtable performer again showed his class to win a shade cleverly from King Revo. His exploits of 2005 meant that Sergeant Cecil was now considered a serious ‘Cup’ horse and on his second start of 2006 he ran well to finish runner-up to Percussionist in the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup. In common with many decent sorts, he was no match for the iconic Yeats in the Gold Cup at Ascot and Goodwood Cup but he secured his first Group race success in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup on favoured Knavesmire turf, that August. Two weeks later he was a York winner once again when wining the Doncaster Cup, which was held here due to re-developments on Town Moor. And a month later he secured a big-race hat-trick when winning the Prix du Cadran at the prestigious Arc meeting. Sergeant Cecil’s final victory came at this very meeting when he won the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup, beating Geordieland by three quarters of a length. He did return to the Knavesmire twice more, finishing fifth in the Weatherbys Hamilton Londsale Cup and the following season’s Yorkshire Cup. From 53 starts, Sergeant Cecil won ten races, four of which came at York, amassing prize money of £828,127 in the process. He was a real favourite with the crowd at York and richly deserves the title Knavesmire Legend.

KNAVESMIRE TIP ONE MASTER overcame adversity to strike in Group 3 company at Goodwood last month and could add another victory to her tally for William Haggas. This trip suits her perfectly and the rain at the track earlier this week should ensure that the ground is safe enough for her to run her race. Safe Voyage was denied a clear run at Goodwood in a Group 2 last time, while San Donato shaped better than the bare result in the Sussex Stakes and also merits close consideration.

AGE The seven-year-old Litigant became the oldest winner since Sea Pigeon back in 1979 when landing the spoils three years ago but the group to focus on is the five and six-year-olds, who between them have landed eight of the last ten renewals. They represent just under half of the twenty-two-runner field this time around.
RECENT FORM Unexposed, dark horses do not win the Ebor. Nine of the last ten winners had achieved a top five finish on their most recent start. We can take this trend one step further when you consider that again, 6 of the last 10 winners had achieved a top two finish on either or both of their two latest starts.
DRAW Usually in races such as this, being drawn on the rail is an advantage but that hasn’t proved the case in the Sky Bet Ebor. The fact that eight of the last ten winners have been drawn in stall 14 or higher suggests that is in fact the higher drawn horses which seem to be favoured. With victory in the Ebor being held in such high esteem, those jockeys drawn low have shown a tendency to break far too quickly from the stalls in order to take advantage of their draw but only end up setting a furious early pace which can often set the race up for more patiently ridden rivals.
BETTING Whichever way you look at it, this is not a race in which following the favourite has proved a fruitful strategy - there have only been two winning favourites since 1998. In the last ten years, we have had winners at 20/1, 25/1 and 33/1 so the best advice is to back your selection regardless of the starting price.
OFFICIAL RATINGS Horses rated between 99 and 108 may have won the race nine times in the last ten renewals but as the weights continue to compress, you need to be rated that high to even get in nowadays. The highest rated winner in recent years was Muntahaa, who won off a mark of 109 in 2018, with last year's winner, Mustajeer, rated 108.
KEY TRENDS Drawn Stall 14 or higher Five-year-olds have a good record Top five finish last time
Muntahaa
CONCLUSION With one of the highest quality fields ever assembled for this historic Heritage Handicap, it looks a very tricky puzzle to solve. However, using the trends, it narrows our scope down to in-form, high-class five or six-year-old horses drawn in 14 or higher, so three stand out. FUJAIRA PRINCE is right on the preferred rating, being on a mark of 108 after an easy Royal Ascot handicap win, and the Roger Varian-trained gelding may well be able to defy that 9lb rise. Jeremiah may only be rated 99, but looks a 100+ rated horse in the making - his eighth at Ascot last time can be excused as he was short of room just as the race began to unfold and is better judged by his brave win at that venue previously. This 1m6f trip may also unlock further improvement. FInally Ghostwatch hits the shortlist at a big price and with a C&D win already under his belt last year, he could hit the frame for the in-form Charlie Appleby yard. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 45
The Sky Bet Ebor
FACT FILE: WERE YOU HERE THE DAY WHEN…
Sea Pigeon
Distance One mile & six furlongs (2,800m)
Prize money £250,000
Where have four decades gone, Sea Pigeon was a most popular winner in 1979. The nine-year-old gelding, once ante-post favourite for the Derby and a future dual Champion Hurdle winner, represented Yorkshire trainer Peter Easterby and humped 10 stone to victory. He was ridden to victory by jump jockey Jonjo O’Neill – now a highly successful trainer.
OR FOR THE POST MILLENNIUM GENERATION…
When Sergeant Cecil won another great race on Knavesmire? He won the 2005 Sky Bet Ebor on his first visit to York and added the Stobart Rail Northumberland Plate and the Cesarewitch in the same year to make history by becoming the first horse to land the three premier staying handicaps. The gelding always raised his game on the Knavesmire and later added the Yorkshire Cup, the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and the rearranged 2006 Doncaster Cup to his triumphs here.
FIRST WINNER?
Pagan was the first winner of the race, ridden by Slim Templeman and trained by John Scott. The 6-1 shot carried 7st 13lbs and was a popular winner. Soon the betting public was hooked and York’s fortunes blossomed.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
Simply it is York’s most famous race, and shares its name with the Roman city, EBORACUM that is now known as York. It is the biggest gambling heat of the week here on the Knavesmire and the oldest race of the Festival, first run 1843.
WILL IRISH EYES BE SMILING? They were in 2009 and 2010 when Sesenta and Dirar won for Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott respectively and again in 2014 when Mutual Regard won for Johnny Murtagh. But overall, runners from over the water don’t have the greatest of records, after a lean spell in the later years of last century and first decade of this, illuminated only by the Aidan O’Brientrained Mediterranean in 2001, fortunes have been better of late. With the ill-fated Heartbreak City’s impressive triumph in 2016 and Mustajeer winning last year’s race, perhaps Irish fortunes have really turned a corner, so True Self and Pondus could add to the recent good record for the Irish.
Mutual Regard 46
LEADING TRAINER?
Saeed bin Suroor
The recently-retired Luca Cumani was the trainer to follow, having won it three times - Vicious Circle (1999), Mephisto (2004) & Purple Moon (2007). Saeed bin Suroor has won two of the last ten renewals, including the 2008 substitute race at Newbury, and with Willing Foe in 2012, but isn’t represented today. Four other trainers with runners today have tasted past success - John Gosden (El Misk), David Elsworth (Dash Of Spice), Mark Johnston (Hochfeld and King’s Advice) and Willie Mullins (True Self).
LEADING RIDER? Lester Piggott, whose statue is now on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn, leads the way with 5 victories. When it comes to the current crop, Jamie Spencer has two victories to his name and rides Pondus in a bid to bring up the treble while Jim Crowley partners Jeremiah looking for his second Sky Bet Ebor in three years.
THE THREE-YEAR-OLD QUESTION? HOW DO
Lester Piggott
With the Sky Bet Ebor becoming one of Europe’s richest and best handicaps, it was the right time to consider how the race best fits in to the overall racing programme. For the three-year-olds, the established Pattern programme has a proven rhythm and it is not the intention to alter running plans for the best of the Classic crop. In a typical year, the investment in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur keeps the pathway to the St Leger. The Ebor will now focus on stayers aged 4 and upwards. The recently announced Race to The Ebor (rested this year for obvious reasons), also links the more valuable Sky Bet Melrose with next season, so retaining a 3-y-o connection. In practical terms, the stats show that as the quality of the Ebor has increased, only two horses aged three actually made the stalls in the last decade, with the last classic generation winner back in 2001, when Mediterranean took the spoils.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker. We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of RequestABet, First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a 5-year partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of a dozen races this week.
YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Yorkshire-trained horses have a good overall record, although Moyenne Corniche became only the fourth winner in the past 26 renewals when triumphing six years ago for Brian Ellison. The late Jimmy Fitzgerald saddled Sapience to score in 1989, the now record-breaking Mark Johnston’s Quick Ransom was the hero in 1992 and Les Eyre won with Far Ahead in 1997. Hochfeld and King’s Advice represent the Middleham challenge this afternoon, while Philip Kirby and Tim Easterby supplement his Yorkshire-trained challenge with Stargazer and Glecadam Glory respectively.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our feature race, the Sky Bet Ebor, remains the richest flat Handicap in Europe. It is open to 4-y-o+ horses and over a trip of a mile and three quarters. This race is theoretically open to any horse regardless of its official mark. The highest rated, still set to carry the most weight in this race today, is Deja. The runners are undoubtedly amongst the best in their class in Britain so remember to follow their progress in future contests, they could star in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Tough to win, harder to pick the winner, perhaps pay close attention to the television coverage of the Parade Ring before investing your cash.

KNAVESMIRE TIP TRUESHAN progressed nicely up the handicap ranks last season which culminated with success in a conditions event at Newbury in October. He built on a nice reappearance effort at Newmarket to score at Haydock in Listed company and the step back up in trip will play to the four-year-old’s strengths. Fujaira Prince can enter the reckoning, after an impressive victory at Royal Ascot, from a 9lb higher mark now, while others worth considering are Verdana Blue, Pablo Escobarr and Ghostwatch.

RACE DESCRIPTION The final leg in our Pattern Race journey this week, this Listed race is for two-year-old horses over five furlongs. The shorter distance usually makes for a tight finish. Weight allowances mean the boys carry more weight to reflect their greater strength; Mamba Wamba is one of the four fillies who start from the lower mark today. All colts are on an even 9st. Maybe an in-form yard is the way to go, check out the table before this race.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Acklam Express has impressively notched a Hamilton/Goodwood double and he should be competitive in this tougher event, while Lauded has been running well in Group 2 company of late but is due to run in the Gimcrack on Friday. That duo and Sandown scorer Politics must be considered, but BEN MACDUI rates the one to beat for Kevin Ryan and Kevin Stott. This Kodiac gelding built on his debut success when chasing home Steel Bull in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood and he potentially looks a notch above these rivals.

RACE DESCRIPTION Getting the hang of handicaps? Your vital statistics are; 3-y-o+ rated 0-105, going one and a quarter miles. The handicap rating band means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the behind closed doors cricketers at Southampton a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The best will be the highest rated, in this case Mountain Hunter, and so will carry most weight. If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Forest Of Dean Trainer: John Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age/Weight: 3-9-3 Runners: 14 ran Price: 6/4F The market suggested that the three-year-old, Forest Of Dean, was very well-handicapped in this contest last year and it certainly played out that way, as he drew a length and a half clear of the field in the final furlong to win cosily.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Sinjaari had Fifth Position held in third when keeping on strongly to land the John Smith’s Cup over course and distance last month and could have lots more to come. However, MAYDANNY relished the step up to this trip when running away with a competitive Goodwood handicap last time and he could well take the 11lb rise in his stride. Stablemate Sky Defender was second there and the consistent performer could offer some value, as could Tim Easterby’s Aasheq and the thriving Glasses Up.

THE APPRENTICE Today’s Sky Bet Apprentice Stakes is the richest of its type in the land and one that gives the young lads and lasses an opportunity to shine on a big stage. There are a host of exciting talents amongst this year’s field but here are four worth keeping an eye on:CIEREN FALLON, as you may be able to tell from his name, is from high-class racing stock and is already well on the road to emulating the great achievements of his father, Keiren. Fallon jnr has already bagged multiple big-race victories, including in the Darley July Cup when he partnered the Roger Teal-trained Oxted. He was last year’s Champion Apprentice and already has 27 wins to his name this season, but the most staggering statistic with Fallon is that if you’d have backed each and every one of his rides in 2020 with £1 , you would now be an amazing £180 richer! He’s one of the most in-demand riders around right now, so Michael Appleby will be delighted to have secured him for the ride on Sampers Seven this afternoon and it would be no surprise at all if Fallon could steer that filly to success here. MEGAN NICHOLLS partners the Kevin Ryan-trained Queen’s Order this afternoon and she’ll be hoping she can add another winner to her tally at York and prove the time she spent recording our ‘Megan On The Course’ features worthwhile! The daughter of top jumps trainer Paul Nicholls, she’s another with racing in the blood, but has focussed her riding on the flat and is reaping the rewards with eleven winners already this season, including with horses from her Father’s yard such as Birds Of Prey, Oleg and Christopher Wood. Interestingly, she’s already won on a Queen trained by Kevin Ryan this season (Queen’s Sargent), so in a bid to be the Queen of the Knavesmire this afternoon, Queen’s Order will have to oblige... still following?
JOSHUA BRYAN is attached to the Andrew Balding stable but rides the smart Tim Easterby-trained Sunday Sovereign this afternoon and it’s a good chance for him to add to the six winners he’s registered since the resumption of racing. He managed to bag 27 winners from 164 rides last season at a superb 16% strike rate and while opportunities this season have been much more sparce after the impact of COVID-19, he’s still proving a valuable member of both the Balding team and many other trainers looking for an apprentice excellent value for his claim. Surprisingly, Bryan has only ever had one ride at York so far in his career, so this afternoon is a superb opportunity for this classy rider to get off the mark on the Knavesmire. GEORGIA DOBIE had a breakout year in 2019, with 22 winners chalked up and even though this season’s opportunites have been fewer so far, she already has 10 winners under her belt this season, runnning at an excellent 15% strike rate. Attached to the Eve Johnson Houghton stable, all bar one of her winners have hailed from that yard, so it will be another new stable on her list this afternoon if the Adam West-trained Live In The Moment is to triumph this afternoon. Of course that horse has already won on the Knavesmire this season (back in July), so Dobie looks to have a superb chance of recording her first York winner on just her second ride at the track. Georgia seems to have a knack for riding winners at tracks beginning with a letter towards the end of the alphabet (Wolverhampton and Windsor her most successful venues), so why not York too?
The support of Sky Bet sees this race run at £30,000 - so a big stage to help develop a future star. 66

7th Race 5.10 The Sky Bet Apprentice Stakes Five Furlong (1,000 metres) See page 71 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A farewell handicap but an added dimension to the contest is that all the riders are still apprentices. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. Megan Nicholls has won the Silk Series twice and so gets no relief for Queen’s Order, whereas the developing talent of Marie Perrault lifts the full 7lb from the back of Never Dark. If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until Sunday 6 September. Thank you for your support from afar this week.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Meraas ran well for a long way when sixth in the Stewards’ Cup and is dangerous now competing back against his own age group, though he faces competition for the lead from Marco Botti’s new recruit Wonderwork and might not get his own way out in front. A chance is thus taken on SUNDAY SOVEREIGN showing up well on his first start for Tim Easterby and now moving into handicap company for the first time. Electric Ladyland has place claims if building on her fourth at Glorious Goodwood.
