REVITALIZE YOUR BATHROOM WITH T H E SE E LE GA NT VANIT Y DESIGNS By Rebecca Bradshaw

TRADITIO

NA L

The most versatile of styles, traditional vanities fit with just about any bathroom dĂŠcor. Symmetrical lines, recessed panel cabinets, and minimal embellishments give this style a timeless appeal. Elevate a traditional vanity to an elegant statement piece by opting for dark stained cabinetry in mahogany or hickory, or painted flat white. We suggest completing the classic look with large mirrors framed in the same finish as the cabinets. Traditional vanities lend themselves to a variety of hardware choices, such as simple polished silver. For a more expensive feel, use oil-rubbed bronze pulls and handles. That same versatility works for countertops, where rich marble or composites can give the piece elegance. Undermount sinks with classic plumbing fixtures in the same finish as other hardware are typical design choices, though modern countertop-mounted sinks in white porcelain can add visual interest to the traditional design.

ANTIQUE

The antique vanity is more ornate than the traditional style, providing your bathroom with romantic elegance. Luxurious design choices include European influenced details such as curved front cabinets, carved pilasters, and arched valances. For a more classic appeal, vanities created from repurposed antique sideboards and dressers provide the look of fine furnishing, while glass or mirror fronted cabinets have a 1920’s vibe. Cabinet finishes can range from rich glazes, warm, subdued paint colors, inlaid wood, and even custom carved motifs. Gilded framed mirrors and ornate gold or crystal cabinet knobs complete the feeling of luxury. Turn up the opulence of an antique vanity with creamy Carrara or gold flecked black marble countertops. Complete the look with dropped sinks clad in painted porcelain or burnished copper. Vintage-inspired curved faucets or ornate levers finished in gold, brass, or polished silver are the perfect design choice for an elegant antique vanity.

Transforming a boring bathroom into an upscale retreat can be as easy as installing an elegant vanity. These days, there are more vanity designs than ever with a wide range of sizes, shapes, and styles to choose from. From ornate cabinetry and oversized mirrors to Carrara marble countertops, elegant vanities include traditional, antique, and contemporary designs.

CO N T E M P O

RARY

Sleek, clean lines give contemporary bathroom vanities an understated elegance all their own. Minimalist bases and cabriole legged credenzas finished in teak, oak, or other wood veneers provide a midcentury modern look, while simple cabinet bases painted in flat black or dark gray have trendy appeal. Contemporary cabinet doors and drawers are usually flat fronted, or have industrial design inspired hardware with polished chrome or monochromatic brushed nickel finishes. An unframed mirror running the length of the counter or an outsized round mirror will complete the sleek, modern look. Good choices for contemporary vanity countertops are concrete, granite, or solid surface resin composites; they all work well with fitted ceramic sinks or sculptural glass or metal vessel sinks. Looking like pieces of art, modern plumbing hardware choices range from brushed chrome or stainless steel finished waterfall faucets to futuristic LED lit fixtures, making the contemporary vanity a truly elegant statement piece.

THE

She Shed WISH LIST

BY SARAH FOGLE

Do you ever wish there was a retreat where you could enjoy your hobbies without leaving the backyard? Somewhere to get a little “me time” around your home that isn’t covered with laundry, family obligations or toys? Move over, man cave–today’s new home trend is the “she shed,” a wellmaintained outdoor oasis for the woman of the house to keep all of her tools or put her feet up. While a shed might not sound like a glamorous place at first, you can create a lot out of a structure that normally houses dusty rakes and rusty paint cans. Not sure where to start? Follow this guide to reimagine your shed into a bright and comfortable space of your own.

1.The Write Down Your Goals size of your shed will be determined by both the amount of outdoor space you have and what you plan to use it for. If you can never seem to resist a decorative terracotta pot or need elbow room for a tabletop, you might want to go for as big of a shed as your backyard will allow. You can make your shed a true workspace equipped with a full potting bench, a quiet sanctuary with a tidy desk for creative writing or a relaxing hideaway more ideal for a cozy reading chair—anything goes! Write down your favorite tasks to get an idea of your expectations for the space. You’ll want ample room to fit your needs.

2. Choose Your Style Today’s trends include a classic barn roof, mini cottage styles,

stable doors and modern angles. Plain, square boxes are certainly a thing of the past. Whether you want your she shed to coordinate with the exterior of your home or take on a fantasy quality, your personalization options are wide open. Pro tip: hang flower boxes and bring greenery inside to soften edges and add a little polish. The extra color looks great, too!

3. Pick Your Paint Don’t let the exterior outshine the interior by leaving the walls

au natural. Set the mood of your oasis with an inspiring color scheme. Channeling your inner earth goddess? Go for a sage green or sky blue. Want to feel a surge of good vibes each time you open the door? Seek out vibrant shades of citrus or coral. Even just whitewashing the walls will give your space a clean, fresh energy, and you can warm it up with accessories.

4. Stock the Basics Fill up your she shed with the things you need to do what you love. Gardeners may want a cute matching set

of tools, several terracotta or ceramic pots of various sizes, a few packs of seeds, some potting soil and a watering can. You may want to invest in a few plant anthologies and gardening how-to/coffee table books for reference and inspiration. For writers, a small but sturdy desk will do the trick. A classic metal bistro table can handle the elements with ease. For the lady who just wants a place to relax, a sturdy bench or chair with comfortable pillows makes a great place to kick back.

5. Have Fun with the Details The difference between a regular old garden shed and

a bona fide she shed lies in the decor. Make sure your storage is visually interesting: a wooden mail organizer for your seed packets, decorative hooks to hang tools, glass canisters for birdseed and soil, and industrial metal bins for muddy galoshes and kneeling pads give a small workspace a styled, clever purpose without overwhelming. For a cozy environment, add a lamp for soft lighting, an outdoor rug for your bare feet and some soft curtains for the windows. Give your walls interest beyond paint with artwork or reclaimed pieces from the thrift store—whatever lets your personality shine!

With just a little elbow grease and some thoughtful decorating, you can have a fully outfitted she shed set up over the span of a weekend. No matter the size of the shed or extent of your green thumb, you can carve out a special space for you to enjoy.

Sarah Fogle is a self-professed DIYer who believes that anyone can learn how to update their home. From bigger projects like creating a “she shed” to smaller projects like organizing a space, she offers some great ideas. To see a large selection of shed organization products, visit The Home Depot.

Add Charm to Your Interior with a Book Nook By Cat Queen

Creating a charming book nook in your home is much easier than you might think. You don’t need wall-to-wall shelving or an overstuffed chair next to a roaring fire (although if that’s what you’re working with, great!). All you really need to create your reading nook is a comfy place to sit, some soft light, and a warm blanket. Follow these tips for setting up your perfect reading escape.

Use space wisely Most homes have at least one space that is just waiting to be converted into a cozy reading area. Built-in book nooks add instant charm and character to a home. If you’re up for a minor renovation, the unused area below your staircase may be a great candidate for your new reading lounge. If that’s not an option, there are plenty of other wonderful spaces you can convert into a book nook. Window seats, large landings, or any under-used corner of your home will do just fine! You can even convert a closet into a secret reading hideaway. For the little ones, use a teepee to offset a special reading area just for them.

Pick the right spot Your reading nook should be a place where your mind is utterly at rest. Pick a spot in your house where you feel relaxed and able to concentrate. Make sure it’s quiet, temperature controlled, and has plenty of light.

Get ready to sit back and relax Once you’ve found the perfect get-away spot, it’s time to bring in the major players. First and most importantly, you’ll need a comfortable place to sit. Whether it’s a high-back chair, a chaise lounge, or a pile of pillows on the floor, choose a soft, welcoming seat where you can devour your next page-turner.

Shed some light on your book nook Lighting is another essential element of a great book nook. Indirect, natural sunlight is ideal, but you also want to ensure that you have artificial lighting available for late evening reading. Adjustable lamp lighting will help you get the right level of light whenever you need it.

A place for everything, and everything in its place A small table or shelf next to your seating area will give you a place to keep a lamp, other books or magazines, pens, or beverages. If you don’t have much floor space, install a small floating shelf next to your chair. The key to achieving book nook perfection is making sure you have everything you might need in one space. Nothing breaks your concentration more than having to continue getting up to go grab a drink or a pen or a blanket. Speaking of blankets, keep a soft, warm throw on or near your chair. A couple of toss pillows will also keep things snug and cozy. Creating a charming book nook in your home is as easy as following these steps. Regardless of the amount of space available, you can make yourself an inviting spot to curl up with your favorite book!

NEW TO THE HOOD? HOW TO BREAK THE ICE WITH UNACQUAINTED NEIGHBORS BY ELLIOT JOHNSON

Moving into a new neighborhood can be overwhelming, especially if you’re in a new city, state, or even a new part of the same town. Starting over can seem like a challenging task, but if you’re looking to jump right in and make new friends in your neighborhood, follow these 4 tips to break the ice!

HAVE PEOPLE OVER! If you’re not afraid or shy of strangers, simply host an event such as a cocktail party or BBQ at your house. Having people over allows you to meet new neighbors in a comfortable environment, and they can learn more about you and your family. Most people always feel more comfortable inside of their own home, so letting neighbors come to your abode lets you feel at ease. Not only is this an easy idea, it’s also a smart one. Neighbors can easily walk or drive down the street to your home, so there is a good chance that most of your neighbors will come over or at least stop by to introduce themselves to you.

STRIKE UP A CONVERSATION New neighbors are usually just as curious about meeting you as you are curious to meet them. If you’re going to get the mail or even taking the dog out for a walk, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with a new face. Simply saying hi or introducing yourself as the “new person” will interest neighbors in speaking with you. Find common ground to keep the conversation going; subjects such as kids, jobs, and the city are great initial topics. Being outgoing and friendly to neighbors will make them interested in getting to know you. Often times, once a neighbor welcomes you to the neighborhood, they will then tell the other neighbors about you. This may cause even more people to stop by!

GET INVOLVED Most neighborhoods have HOA boards or homeowner meetings and boards you can join. What’s better than meeting new neighbors that have power? Weekly or monthly meetings are easy to get take part in, and most boards love new attendees. Getting involved helps you break the ice because you are presenting yourself as a community member, and will be meeting new people left and right. Before you know it, half of the neighborhood will be friends with you. If you can’t join a HOA group, many areas these days also have online forums for specific neighborhoods. This is another great option as it’s easy to use your computer when you don’t have time for face-toface meetings.

GET OUT AND EXPLORE! Simply doing activities alone or with your family is a great way to meet neighbors. Take your significant other, kids, or even pet for a walk at the neighborhood park or the community swimming pool. Getting outdoors in your area is the perfect way to meet new faces of the neighborhood. It takes such little time and almost zero effort. Now get out there, socialize, and have fun! You’ll be glad you did.

CREATIVE WAYS TO ADD

Farmhouse Flair

By Rebecca Bradshaw

Open any home decorating magazine or website, and you’ll find an abundance of farmhouse inspired rooms and furnishings. Both natural and practical, this charming design style adds a comfortable, rustic appeal while still remaining contemporary. With just six creative touches, get ready to show off farmhouse flair in the dining room!

TO YOUR DINING ROOM

1. FURNISHINGS A gathering place for family meals and holiday celebrations, a farmhouse dining room starts with its centerpiece: the dining table. Farmhouse tables are typically both sturdy and rustic, with painted bases and distressed natural wood tops, or are painted entirely white. Create your own table by mounting reclaimed wood panels on a painted base, and finish the look with a mix of flea market finds such as ladder back or Shaker chairs or other antique pieces. Sturdy benches also make a great seating option, evoking the comfortable, homey feeling of the décor style’s inspiration. Furniture such as painted hutches and sideboards will complete the farmhouse look; add a pop of color to hutches by painting the insides in an accent color such as pale blue or green.

2. WALL COVERINGS

3. FLOORING

Batten and beadboard, salvaged wood planking, or roughly hewn shiplap provide texture to walls, creating the perfect backdrop for a farmhouse inspired dining room. Keep the wood natural for a truly rustic look, or paint them in shades of light gray or blue for a clean, contemporary feel. For a more casual and fun vibe, try hues of sunny yellow or sky blue. Walls and furniture painted solid white are popular choices in current farmhouse design; add visual interest to the white on white look with colorful accessories such as brightly covered cushions or metal accent pieces. With plenty of agrarian and nature inspired patterns now available, wallpaper and ceiling borders are other great options for farmhouse dining rooms, especially when used sparingly, such as to cover an accent wall or highlight an architectural detail.

Pull the look of the dining room together with natural wood floors—reclaimed, wide planks in random widths will give the room an authentic aged look and will make the space appear larger, as well. Woods such as distressed oak, pine, and hickory are great choices to highlight the room’s character; darker patinas will create a formal appearance, while lighter woods fit well in more casual dining rooms. If installing new flooring isn’t an option, get creative and stain, whitewash, or paint your existing floors, or cover them with simple natural fiber area rugs in neutral colors. Rugs with colorful nature or farm life inspired designs are other great ways to complete the look.

4. LIGHTING Pull the look of the dining room together with natural wood floors—reclaimed, wide planks in random widths will give the room an authentic aged look and will make the space appear larger, as well.

5. ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS Architectural details such as painted beadboard ceilings or dark beams add a lot of visual interest to farmhouse inspired rooms; use a dark stain on reclaimed wooden beams to give the space a rustic look. Built-in window seats and banquettes backed with ticking covered throw pillows are another way to bring the homey, comfortable appeal of farmhouse design; they can double as great out of the way storage spaces as well. For big impact, hang a set of floor to ceiling sliding barn doors on the entryway to the dining room; use recycled lumber that is either stained to bring out its natural patina or painted a solid black or white. To complete the barn-inspired look, mount the doors with large-scale wrought iron hardware.

6. FINAL TOUCHES

Sources: Houzz, HGTV, Pinterest, Decoist

Accent pieces add the final touch of charm needed to complete your farmhouse inspired dining room. Hang worn and chipped painted pieces such as old shutters or window frames for a unique sculptural display, or group farm ephemera or antique weather vanes to make an eyecatching dining table centerpiece. Show off a collection of stoneware or pure white crockery by hanging them on the wall or displayed in a painted hutch or sideboard. Be creative, and reclaim or repurpose flea market finds like lanterns, chalkboards, painted candlesticks, and other rustic items--the more well-worn the better. Be careful not to over accessorize, however; keep your farmhouse inspired dining room feeling contemporary by following the adage that less is more.

S G N N O I L H L T E W A HOME D O T NOT SELLING WHEN

BY TALAIA WHISENANT

Whether you’re a seasoned seller or it’s your first time, putting your home on the market can be stressful, time consuming, and overall taxing on your daily life. However, there are times to stress and times to save yourself from pulling your hair out! Here are things NOT to focus on when selling your home.

DON’T OVERLOOK HIRING AN AGENT

Many homeowners turn to real estate agents to sell their homes. Once you find the right one, the presence of a Realtor can make the home selling process a whole lot easier. If you’re considering tackling it on your own, keep in mind that choosing to sell yourself takes tons of time and research, and you are responsible for your own market analysis and merchandising along with several other tasks. Simplify the process by enlisting in a qualified Realtor that will help sell your home quickly and for the right price.

DON’T DWELL ON A FIXED ASKING PRICE

“Locking in” on your asking price and refusing to negotiate with buyers may leave you out cold and without a sale! Unless your home is located in a highly coveted area, expect some flexibility in price when selling. Understand that most buyers want to feel like they are getting the best deal when purchasing a home, along with significant value. Find a happy medium where you can list your home at an attractive price, but remember to leave room for negotiations so both parties are satisfied. Your buyer will be pleased with the reduced asking price, and you will still get the amount needed to sell!

DON’T DWELL ON THE EMOTIONAL VALUE YOU’VE ATTACHED TO YOUR HOME

It may be difficult to separate from a property you love, but once you decide to list your home, you must regard it as a business undertaking. Becoming too emotionally attached to your property can lead to risky and poor decisions. Additionally, it can cost you time and money. The longer your home sits on the market, the more money you lose! Instead, focus on your reasons for selling, the financial reward, and try to distance yourself emotionally from the property.

DON’T FOCUS ON THE TIME OF THE YEAR

You may think that winter isn’t the best time to put your house on the market, but with an experienced agent and a powerful marketing strategy, you can sell your home at any time of the year. Don’t focus on the slow-moving winter season, but instead consider your circumstances and reasons for wanting to move. There are plenty of buyers out there (at all times of the year), and waiting to sell in popular months can cause an oversupply of homes, driving demand down, along with your asking price! A great price can attract many favorable offers at any time of the year.

DON’T DWELL ON DÉCOR

The condition of your property plays a huge role in selling your home, but spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on staging and upgrades doesn’t always mean a quick sale. Keep decorating to a minimum and focus on the cleanliness and organization of your home. Neutral colors and tones in a home attract buyers who will often bring their own ideas and concepts to the space.
