New locks. Whether you choose to get brandnew locks or have a locksmith re-key the current ones, it’s important to have these changed. When moving into a new home, there’s really no telling how many copies of the house keys have been made. Another option? Install electric passcode locks. This way, you won’t need a key to enter the house, and no one will have your passcode. A garage keypad. A garage keypad is extremely handy to have and gives you another way to enter your house when you don’t want to have keys, or simply need to get into the garage easily. Have your local garage door installer or electrician wire it up. An alarm service. Some homes are wired with alarm systems and simply need to be re-activated with your account information. However, if you move into a new house and want an extra layer of security quickly, opt for a wireless service. These can be set up and secure in a snap. A new dryer hose. One of the most common sources of house fires is the dryer hose. If your new home has one left from the previous owners or you’re bringing your own, consider getting a new one so you’re assured it doesn’t have holes, tears or any buildup that can cause fires. H EAT Summer is here, and the sun is out in full force. Just like your skin is susceptible to sun damage, so is your house. Make sure your home is protected by focusing on these four essential elements.

To make sure you get the most out of your exterior paint, choose a top-quality brand that will better withstand sun damage over time. Depending on how much direct sunlight you have on your home, tree borders are a good way to add shade to parts of your yard. This will add life to your paint job, and the trees will add more “life” to your lawn and landscaping.

The roof also absorbs the brunt of the sun’s power and can be the first to show sun damage. There’s not much you can do to avoid this, but if you inspect your roof closely each season, and make necessary repairs, you’ll stave off the damage.

DECKS WINDOWS Keep your cold AC inside and the summer heat outside by checking the caulking around your windows. You may also want to consider adding awnings to prevent heat from penetrating, or keeping the blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day. This will keep sunlight out and help cut down on that utility bill.

One of the top ways to protect your deck from summer heat, especially if your deck is made of wood, is by properly sealing it with a high quality, weatherproof, UV resistant sealer. The sealer will help your deck fight back against fading and warping. Another option might be installing a retractable deck awning, which you can pull over your space during the sunniest part of the midday heat. Or consider adding a sunroom instead of a deck, which gives you a more functional, year-round, space.

Keep landscape beds free of weeds and plant debris, they can house bugs. And keep branches and plants away from your home’s foundation. Dry Up Damp Areas. Bugs are always searching for water, especially in the summer heat. Some home invading pests, such a silverfish and centipedes like to hang out in damp places. So fix leaky faucets, and make sure the outdoor spigot isn’t dripping. You’re probably blasting the A/C all summer long, so make sure it’s not leaking. Cracks and Holes Are Like a Wide Open Door. Closely inspect your home’s foundation and any window or door screens. Make any necessary repairs.

Kill Any Bugs You See. Stop small bug problems from becoming big ones. We’re not telling you to go Predator on the fruit flies in your kitchen, but we are telling you to get some insect control products that meet your indoor bug control needs, such as baits, sprays, and other ready-to-use products. Find some with natural or biodegradable ingredients that are safe to use around kids and pets. Create a Barrier to keep the bugs out. Use a perimeter insect killer and spray around the foundation of your home. Also get insect killer that is safe for plants and spray it on flower beds and mulched areas.

There are trillions of insects on the planet, and some of them will pay you a summer time visit. But, if you heed our wise advice, you can prevent them from becoming a real issue and keep your home that summer-time oasis it was meant to be.
