Held annually on 21st March, World Poetry Day celebrates this timeless and treasured style of expression. Here are some of Asia Pacific’s finest places to experience the joy of poetry…
GANGWON, SOUTH KOREA South Korea’s Gangwon province has a deep cultural heritage. Kim Yu-jeong Literature Village traces the life of the country’s most famous novelist, who hailed from Chuncheon, while nearby Wonju, a UNESCO City of Literature, was the home of Park Kyong-Ni, author of “Toji” and one of Korea’s most revered writers. To honour her memory, the Toji Culture Center has run a residency programme for writers since 2001.

Modern-day Melbourne is a UNESCO City of Literature, the home of some of Australia’s greatest writers, and the location of the country’s oldest public library, the State Library of Victoria, which was founded in 1854.

NANJING, CHINA Founded 2,500 years ago, Nanjing served as China’s capital city for six dynasties. Its written heritage includes being the site of China’s first literary academy and home of the world’s largest reference work, the Imperial Encyclopaedia. Over 10,000 literary works have been written in or about Nanjing, including many of China’s most famous poems. For keen readers, Nanjing’s Librairie Avant-Garde is considered one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores.
