This pair is arguably the most fine and rare example of a Chinese antique ever offered on the New Zealand market. These spectacular horns are carved to the tips with a pierced open-work design of trees, vines, gourds, lingzhi fungus, young deer and the ‘three friends of winter’ – pine, prunus and bamboo – culminating in a band of clouds around the base. The richly intricate decorations represent the auspicious Chinese symbols of beauty, perseverance, healing, longevity and resilience; these qualities are also highly regarded in Confucianism and, as such, represent the scholar-gentleman’s ideal. The horns were formerly the

property of Sir John Budd Phear (1825–1905), a High Court judge in Ceylon, noted anthropologist and writer. Sir John wrote the fascinating text The Aryan Village in India and Ceylon published in the early 1880’s. His family owned Marpool Hall, Exmouth, and they gifted the large Phear Park to the city of Exmouth. Sir John’s son Gilbert Phear inherited the horns and later immigrated to New Zealand where the horns have been passed down by descent to the present owners. These horns are complemented in this sale by a superb collection of Chinese and Japanese decorative arts, antiques and porcelain. a remarkable antique Chinese silk tapestry. Also on offer is an outstanding collection of Royal Worcester, including fine examples of vases by Stinton and Davis, which are hand painted with scenes depicting Highland cattle and sheep and were made at the peak of the careers of these craftsmen. The sale is completed with a selection of English sterling silver, oak and mahogany antique furniture, a Bluthner baby grand piano, Victorian long-case and mantel clocks, classical bronze figures, Persian rugs, decorative lighting, antique paintings and a collection of station clocks.
