important paintings & contemporary art March 2013 Highlights Webb’s most recent sale of Important Paintings and Contemporary Art, held in late March, once again broke new ground in the secondary market for contemporary and modern New Zealand art practice. With private collectors acquiring nearly $2million worth of significant New Zealand works, Webb’s first major sale for 2013 was one of the highest-grossing, mixed-vendor auctions held in the New Zealand market for a decade.

MODERN DESIGN
CONSIGN NOW OCTOBER 2013
April 2013 Highlights The American mid-20th century designs in the recent auction ‘Come Fly With Me’, a Webb’s collaboration with Mr. Bigglesworthy, were keenly sought by collectors. The event was set within a market largely occupied by Danish design and collectors were enthusiastic about the American pieces on offer. This resulted in the sale being one of the most successful ever held in this category.
Contact Josh Willaims E: jwilliams@webbs.co.nz P: 09 524 6804
With a sell-through rate by value of 85%, and sold pieces exceeding their low estimates by 128%, the sale generated strong competition by those seeking to acquire iconic designs rarely seen on the New Zealand market. Where in the past the market has responded most strongly to utilitarian furniture designs, this sale was counter trend and most of the focus was on statement design pieces, lighting and accessories. Consignments are now invited for the next auction of Modern Design to be held in October. Contact Josh Williams for specialist advice regarding international and local collecting trends and assessment of value for collectable modern furniture and accessories.
An Eames 670/671 Lounger and Ottoman by Herman Miller The model 670 Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames is one of the most recognisable chair designs of the 20th century. From its prized spot in museums like the MoMA to stylish interiors throughout the world, it embodies the modern design ethic of perfectly executed form and function. The chair was conceived as a modern take on the classic club armchair and Charles’ vision was for a chair with "the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt." What emerged was a design breakthrough that balanced comfort with a sleek, stripped-back aesthetic of luxury and elegance: a design that looks as fresh today as it did on the day it was conceived. Achieved $7,600 A BMF Nagel Modular Candelabra The Nagel candelabra is a great example of how designers were looking to push the boundaries in all areas of interior design, including lighting. The basic form of the candelabra is centuries old; however, the West German design duo of Ceasar Stoff and Fritz Nagel were looking to the future as an inspiration for this functional modular lighting system. Using modern materials and a space-age design aesthetic, the pair were able to come up with a perfectly weighted and balanced light that will conform to almost any configuration. Demand for the candelabra was high as it is a perfect complement to mid-century modern furniture and also features the rare and sought-after tripod base. Achieved $2,900
A Pair of Charles Pollock 657 Sling Chairs by Knoll The Sling Chair with its tubular steel frame and thick leather sling is a bold statement in modern design and has since become a coveted design classic. Charles Pollock was always destined for greatness. After graduating from New York's prestigious Pratt Institute in the early 1950s, Pollock stepped out on his own, opening a small studio above a drugstore in Brooklyn. It was there that Pollock created his first product for Knoll, the Model 657 Sling Chair. Achieved $6,600 10
A Curtis Jere Flying Birds Sculpture Eight streamlined birds fold in a symphony of flight. Cut and welded in solid brass, this striking piece exemplifies the organic shapes and graphic simplicity found in wall sculptures by Curtis Jere for Artesian House. Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels created the nom de plume Curtis Jere to market their vivid mid-century sculptures. They designed and made large-scale metal art, which retailed through high-end studios like Raymor in New York City. Achieved $3,900
A Pair of Eames Soft Pad Management Chairs by Herman Miller These Management Chairs have become a design classic, inseparable from the design-conscious home or office. Spurred on by the material challenge of aluminium, Charles and Ray Eames designed the Aluminium Group Chairs in 1958. Eleven years later they added soft leather pad upholstery to the design, for added comfort. The chairs gained popularity through the technical achievement of the seat-back suspension. Soft leather pads are suspended between the curved aluminium frame creating a coveted design classic. Achieved $5,900
A Peter Protzman Executive Desk by Herman Miller The intricate grain and striking contrast of the zebrawood against the chrome perfectly defines the glamorous high-tech direction of modern design during the 1970s. In production for only two years (1970 and 1971), the mirrored chrome and exotic zebrawood desk by Peter Protzman is a very rare find. This elegant desk of grand proportions features an intensely vivid grain pattern, two deep, smoked Lucite drawers and a sleek, pull-out tray. Achieved $7,000
An Adrian Pearsall 2408-S Sofa by Craft Associates With sharp angles and organic curves, this grand, low-line sofa by Adrian Pearsall expresses the optimism and imagination of mid-century design in America. Pearsall is a master of free-form organic modernism. His passion for cleanlined, highly sculptural design is showcased in the unique and beautiful furniture he produced for his company, Craft Associates, during the mid-20th century. Achieved $4,500 11

Christo Package On A Table- Project 1961-88 stone lithograph with collage, wrapped material, string and clips; overworked by hand in chalk and gouache 24 from an edition of 100 signed 813mm x 605mm Provenance: Originally purchased from the William Weston Gallery, London Estimate $7,000 - $9,000
This is a classic work by Christo, the Czechoslovakian artist who emigrated to Paris in 1958. Christo’s infamous wrappings of buildings such as the Reichstag, or of coastlines such as Little Bay, near Sydney, are well known. The drawings, prints, models and photographs Christo made either as maquettes for proposed projects or enduring records of the ephemeral, wrapping events, were a major source of funding for these very costly enterprises. Sometimes actual fabric from the project was packaged up as a type of high art souvenir. Most of these souvenir packages combined different media and made the packaging itself into an aesthetic fetish, not surprising given Christo’s life-long compulsion to wrap, stack and tie up the world in different ways. As Rachel Whiteread has made a distinguished career by developing one idea of the artist Bruce Nauman who cast the empty space beneath a chair, it could be said that Christo has spun a whole universe of
strange wrappings out of the tantalising sculpture by surrealist artist Man Ray entitled The Enigma of Isidore Ducasse. Man Ray’s work is a sewing machine wrapped in a horse blanket and secured with a piece of rope. Christo clearly grasped the psychological power of the hidden object and the tension and potential force of an object or figure constrained by tightly tied cores. In this example the relief of the real folded linen, which has trompe l’oeil shadows and hatching added in graphite, tied down and precisely knotted with thin brown strings, contrasts to the lithographically printed shadows and perspectival construction lines that frame the table and its mysterious burden in space. Small makings in gouache add to the material variety of this piece. ALLAN SMITH

Important Conditions of Sale for Watches:
Please note: as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to mechanical condition or condition of seals etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion as to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.

Webb’s its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any outside opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Please note: where gemological reports are available these should be read together with the catalogue description. Should there be, through error, omission or introduction of better evidence, any significant difference between the catalogued description and that provided in the gemologist’s report, it shall be assumed that the buyer has inspected the report and is buying in acceptance of it. Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been assessed for weight, colour or clarity mounted and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore based on estimates which are limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given the stone will have been weighed loose, however while the grading of a stone loose will minimise error margins it shall be accepted by the buyer that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

FINE JEWELLERY
Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations: Valuations are made available to customers for two primary purposes: Firstly to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising the piece, and Secondly so that buyers can, if they wish, obtain suitable Insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, such that an Insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. As fashion, desirability and current market forces all have variable impact on second hand or Auction value, there is no direct formula for estimation of such value by interpolation from Insurable value. As the currency exchange rate and spot metal prices have a marked effect on jewellery valuations, buyers should note the date and prevailing economic factors at the time that the valuation was produced. Once all of the prevailing parameters have been established, it is possible for an experienced person to interpolate a rough estimate of the current cost of manufacture from past insurable value, but again that exercise will give no indication of actual market forces. Buyers should also note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc). All valuations remain opinions and not matters of fact. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers to understand the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, buyers must make their own assessment of an item’s value before bidding.

Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot. 13. SALES POST AUCTION OR BY PRIVATE TREATY. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated. 14. condition of Items. Condition of items is not detailed in this catalogue. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots they bid on and should refer to clause six. Webb’s are pleased to provide intending buyers with condition reports on any lots.
