The Bank of New Zealand Art Collection Webb’s is partnering with BNZ to tour selected works from the renowned BNZ Art Collection nationally before selling the collection at auction later this year. BNZ has announced proceeds from the sale will be used to fund a philanthropic foundation. The foundation is being designed to help accelerate the work organisations across New Zealand are doing to create a better future for our communities. The BNZ Art Collection has a long history as one of New Zealand’s most significant corporate art collections. Established in 1982, it was developed under the stewardship of legendary art dealer, Peter McLeavey. It contains works by many of the nation’s most revered artists including Colin McCahon, Rita Angus, and Gordon Walters. Works from the collection will tour nationally, showing in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland during August and September. The scale of the collection is such that two separate auctions will take place after the touring programme is complete. Dates for the auctions are Sunday 18 September and Tuesday 27 September. It is an honour for Webb’s to work with BNZ in showcasing this remarkable collection to New Zealanders across the country.

Foreword Kia ora koutou nau mai haere mai ki te Pipiri Art to Date; welcome to our June Art to Date catalogue. Our team is thrilled to present the catalogue for our second Art to Date sale of the year, following a very successful first sale in February. It brings together a broad range of fascinating art from a diverse group of artists.

This Art to Date auction follows the success of our whiteglove sale Don Binney: Observer and the bespoke auction The Group. It comes at a very busy and stimulating time for Webb’s art department, as the art market continues to thrive. We have some very exciting auctions and developments on the horizon in 2022. In July, we will present Goods and Services: Modern and Contemporary Art from a Private Collection – the encore to our single owner collection Melting Moments from November last year. This sale saw a slew of record prices for contemporary New Zealand artists, and we are delighted to showcase another stunning selection of works. Most excitingly, in August and September, Webb’s will have the honour of presenting the Bank of New Zealand Art Collection – New Zealand’s most prestigious private collection. This stunning offering includes many of the greatest artists and most famous artworks in the country. The works will travel to Christchurch and Wellington before being sold in Auckland over two auctions – we feel privileged to share this landmark collection with art lovers throughout Aotearoa.

This June Art to Date catalogue includes nearly 200 artworks that span a variety of mediums, subject matter, and decades, and it covers all price points. The diverse range offers something for new and seasoned collectors alike. Particular highlights include a luminous print by Yvonne Todd, a wonderfully textured early work by Peter Robinson, and a bold Jenny Doležel pastel. Within the catalogue we have highlighted two key suites of works by Pat Hanly and Ralph Hotere. Presented as a group, the striking prints by Hanly showcase the joyful expressive style he is known for. Hanly’s images explore relationships between people and their environment through masterful use of vivid colour, shape and form. In contrast, Hotere’s works show his penchant for the colour black. His works explore a range of influences, including his Māori identity, Catholic upbringing, literature, music, and themes of protest. The abstract works here do so through crosses, mark making, and references to poetry and music within fascinating dark compositions. We are pleased to continue with the fourth iteration of our successful Select section. This curated offering showcases groupings of standout works selected by our team of specialists. Highlights include the pairing of works by “pencil-case painters” Séraphine Pick and Shane Cotton; a suite of pounamu sculptures by contemporary artist Joe Sheehan; and two wonderful 1980s paintings on copper by Bill Hammond. As always, we hope you enjoy looking through the following pages as we have enjoyed collating them. The Select works will be on view at our Wellington premises from 2-11 June, with an opening preview on Wednesday 1 June. Both the Art to Date and Select catalogues will be previewed in Auckland on Wednesday 15 June, and will be on view every day until the auctions on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 June. If you are unable to view the works in person, or have any further questions about the auction, please just get in touch. We are always happy to hear from you.

Ralph Hotere Essay by NEIL TALBOT

Casting an eye back over the decades of his artistic output, one can see printmaking integrated throughout. He produced screenprints, woodcuts, etchings and lithographs from the 1960s right through to the 2000s. They were often, though not always, produced in series with his paintings. Webb's

1 Peter Vangioni, The Lively Surface. Published in Empty of Shadows and Making a Shadow: Lithographs by Ralph Hotere, Christchurch Art Gallery – Te Puna o Waiwhetu, 2005. Pp 13-18. Webb's

Ralph Hotere is widely acknowledged as one of New Zealand’s greatest-ever artists. This is so much the case that it is impossible to entertain any conversation about New Zealand painting, abstraction, or art in general without mentioning his name. While it is painting that won him widespread acclaim, printmaking was a facet of his practice throughout his career. Casting an eye back over the decades of his artistic output, one can see printmaking integrated throughout. He produced screenprints, woodcuts, etchings and lithographs from the 1960s right through to the 2000s. They were often, though not always, produced in series with his paintings. Such is the depth and breadth of his printmaking output that it constitutes a key element of his oeuvre. According to curator and writer Peter Vangioni, “Lithography in particular had an immediate appeal to Hotere, […] he has produced a substantial body of lithographic works.”1. These works were often created with the input of lithographer Marian Maguire, and they showcase his remarkable skill as a graphic artist. Like his paintings, Hotere’s lithographs often feature collaboration with writers, recurring motifs and symbols, and a palette largely comprised of black. Hotere developed his Round Midnight series in 2000. By this stage, he was firmly ensconced as one of Aotearoa’s most accomplished and historically significant artists. In total, the series consisted of 13 prints. Twelve were named after the months of the year, and the last simply, Round Midnight. Considered together, this series clearly demonstrates Hotere’s superb ability to explore a single theme through multiple iterations. In each instance, the artist creates a compelling image using the same minimal compositional elements – two crosses, one single-barred and one double. In the case of the singularly titled Round Midnight, the two cruciform elements cleave the picture plane into thirds. Inked in light grey, the crosses are outlined in flecks of gold and set against a brooding dark red, which fills the image. The contrast between the thin, light lines of the crosses and the dark swirl of the background is striking. Round Midnight September follows a similar format, though with the crosses switched over and a different palette. The swirling ink of the background is black and grey, creating a distinct, cool ambience. In the case of Round Midnight August, the two elements are enveloped in a cluster of hazy lines. The forms are almost lost in the buzzing field of ink. Two other similarly hazy marks are added, to the left and lower right, creating a standout composition. Notably, Hotere also created several Round Midnight paintings. These works were created in his signature materials, lacquer paint and corrugated iron. The same two crosses – one single and one double-barred – feature in Round Midnight II, a large scale painting made in 2000. As with the prints, the painting employs minimal elements to striking effect. Vangioni notes that ‘Round Midnight’ is the title of a track by jazz legend Thelonius Monk. This track quite possibly played a role in inspiring Hotere’s prints and paintings that share the title, though the artist was notoriously reticent when it came to discussing his work, preferring to leave interpretation to viewers. A later untitled lithograph also features in this selection. This work from 1984 makes use of a different set of compositional elements, though the common thread of keenly honed graphic sensibility is undeniable. The print employs a thin, cornerto-corner ‘X’ to set up the picture plane. A rectangular shape holds the centre, though is surrounded and overlaid by scrawling lines and pools of black ink. While restrained in its elements, the image manages to be satisfyingly complex, allowing the viewer to continue to look, encountering something new with each viewing. What can be ascertained from this suite of Hotere’s lithographs is that the artist was a master of more than one medium. He composed prints with poise and possessed a highly attuned compositional sense. His ability to create so many compelling images from such restrained elements highlights why he is one of Aotearoa’s all-time greats.

Pat Hanly Essay by OLIVIA TAYLOR

Pat Hanly, Adrienne Martyn, 1987.

His artworks are dynamic, filled with colour and a sense of movement. Pops of bright colours and blasts of light combine with dizzying gestural figures and lines. This contrast in approach led curator and writer Gregory O’Brien to describe Hanly as a painter of summer and spring, and his contemporaries as painters of winter and autumn. Webb's

At the time Pat Hanly was establishing himself as a painter, the New Zealand art scene was highly focussed on creating a modern, nationalist artistic vernacular. Paintings from this time often feature landscape, rendered in sombre, earthy tones. This palette and subject matter spoke to the country’s raw natural environment and the psychological experience of the isolated South Pacific. Hanly’s work, however, explored a different aesthetic. Hanly travelled and worked as an artist in Europe in the late 1950s and early 1960s. During this time, he was mostly based in the United Kingdom. This time was the peak of the Cold War, and the standoff between nuclear powers dominated press headlines. Hanly identified as a pacifist and was rocked by militaristic discourse in Britain. The tensions and political undercurrents of war and nuclear weaponry often occupied the artist, and he produced images that expressed both his optimism and anxiety towards these themes. Through lyrical wit and exuberant colour palettes, Hanly created images that defied the Cold War status quo: joyous, free, with sentiments in support of life and equality. He described some of his imagery as depicting a paradise: “all races in harmony, love, life, despite greed and wars. Birds sing, stars appear. Moon and sun glow and life goes on.” In 1962, Hanly returned from abroad and settled in Auckland. He found solace in the local environment and New Zealand’s widespread anti-nuclear sentiment. The city was beginning to acknowledge its cultural, botanical, and geographical position in the Pacific, and this flowed through to the arts. Hanly, enthused by this Pacific awakening, continued to explore his artistic vision of environmental sustainability and social harmony. These ideas are evident in Hanly’s prints. One example is Escape from Fire, produced in 1984. This image lyrically depicts sweeping fires, burning buildings, a tree, a sailboat, and several figures of women. Escape from Fire speaks to a series of paintings the artist created in the 1960s – one of which was named The Great Fire. In this series, Hanly made use of several compositional and thematic elements. This included a sailboat motif, depictions of women as creators of humanity, the tree of life, and references to the Pacific. These themes were revisited often in his screenprints and paintings. Escape from Fire and Pacific Hope, also from 1984, both feature sailboats. This key Hanly motif can be read as a means to freedom, escape, and access to new horizons. It may also be the case that the he used sailboats as symbols of his political interests. Within New Zealand’s rapidly changing cultural environment, Hanly was interested in the print medium as a vehicle for political communication. Prints are easy to circulate and can be made widely accessible; this makes them suitable for dissemination of visual culture and activist discourse. The print 1001 Nights from 1995 features many of Hanly’s key themes. Gestural figures, vibrant colours, and a flowing composition set up the image. The focal point is a dancing figure in the centre, dynamically depicted in a humming weave of gestural lines. This piece is effortlessly charming, with a thematic quality that speaks to the artist’s broader practice. Hanly’s works, big and small, are important to New Zealand’s artistic history. His works are held in all major public collections, and numerous private collections of note. He created a number of significant public works, including his 19711972 work Rainbow Pieces, commissioned by architect Miles Warren for the Christchurch Town Hall, and Prelude to a Journey, a 1977 mural displayed at Auckland Airport. His work is widely celebrated as central to Aotearoa’s artistic identity of the post-war period. This series of screenprints reference a lifetime of art making by one of New Zealand’s most significant artists. Webb's

Terms and Conditions The terms and conditions of sale listed here contain the policies of Webb’s (Webb Fine Art). They are the terms on which Webb’s (Webb Fine Art) and the Seller contract with the Buyer. They may be amended by printed Saleroom Notices or oral announcements made before and during the sale. By bidding at auction you agree to be bound by these terms.

1. Background to the Terms used in these Conditions The conditions that are listed below contain terms that are used regularly and may need explanation. They are as follows: “the Buyer” means the person with the highest bid accepted by the Auctioneer. “the Lot” means any item depicted within the sale for auction and in particular the item or items described against any lot number in the catalogue. “the Hammer price” means the amount of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer in relation to a lot. “the Buyer’s Premium” means the charge payable by the Buyer to the auction house as a percentage of the hammer price. “the Reserve” means the lowest amount at which Webb’s has agreed with the Seller that the lot can be sold. “Forgery” means an item constituting an imitation originally conceived and executed as a whole, with a fraudulent intention to deceive as to authorship, origin, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description as to such matters is not reflected by the description in the catalogue. Accordingly, no lot shall be capable of being a forgery by reason of any damage or restoration work of any kind (Including re-painting). “the insured value” means the amount that Webb’s in its absolute discretion from time to time shall consider the value for which a lot should be covered for insurance (whether or not insurance is arranged by Webb’s). All values expressed in Webb’s catalogues (in any format) are in New Zealand Dollars (NZD$). All bids, “hammer price”, “reserves”, “Buyers Premium” and other expressions of value are understood by all parties to be in New Zealand Dollars (NZD$) unless otherwise specified. 2.

Webb’s Auctions as Agent

Except as otherwise stated, Webb’s acts as agent for the Seller. The contract for the sale of the property is therefore made between the Seller and the Buyer. 3.

Before the Sale

3.1. Examination of Property Prospective Buyers are strongly advised to examine in person any property in which they are interested before the Auction takes place. Neither Webb’s nor the Seller provides any guarantee in relation to the nature of the property apart from the Limited warranty in the paragraph below. The property is otherwise sold “AS IS”

to be relied upon as statements of fact. Such statements do not constitute a representation, warranty or assumption of liability by Webb’s of any kind. References in the catalogue entry to the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance only and should be evaluated by personal inspection by the bidder or a knowledgeable representative. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. Estimates of the selling price should not be relied on as a statement that this is the price at which the item will sell or its value for any other purpose. Neither Webb’s nor The Seller is responsible for any errors or omissions in the catalogue or any supplemental material. Images are measured height by width (sight size). Illustrations are provided only as a guide and should not be relied upon as a true representation of colour or condition. Images are not shown at a standard scale. Mention is rarely made of frames (which may be provided as supplementary images on the website) which do not form part of the lot as described in the printed catalogue. An item bought “on Extension” must be paid for in full before it will be released to the purchaser or his/her agreed expertising committee or specialist. Payments received for such items will be held “in trust” for up to 90 days or earlier, if the issue of authenticity has been resolved more quickly. Extensions must be requested before the auction. Foreign buyers should note that all transactions are in New Zealand Dollars so there may be a small exchange rate risk. The costs associated with acquiring a good opinion or certificate will be carried by the purchaser. If the item turns out to be forged or otherwise incorrectly described, all reasonable costs will be borne by the vendor. 3. Buyers Responsibility All property is sold “as is” without representation or warranty of any kind by Webb’s or the Seller. Buyers are responsible for satisfying themselves concerning the condition of the property and the matters referred to in the catalogue by requesting a condition report. No lot to be rejected if, subsequent to the sale, it has been immersed in liquid or treated by any other process unless the Auctioneer’s permission to subject the lot to such immersion or treatment has first been obtained in writing.

2. Catalogue and Other Descriptions All statements by Webb’s in the catalogue entry for the property or in the condition report, or made orally or in writing elsewhere, are statements of opinion and are not

At the Sale

4.1. Refusal of Admission Webb’s reserves the right at our complete discretion to refuse admission to the auction premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid. 4.2. Registration Before Bidding Any prospective new buyer must complete and sign a registration form and provide photo identification before bidding. Webb’s may request bank, trade or other financial references to substantiate this registration. 4.3. Bidding as a Principal When making a bid, a bidder is accepting personal liability to pay the purchase price including the buyer’s premium and all applicable taxes, plus all other applicable charges, unless it has been explicitly agreed in writing with Webb’s before the commencement of the sale that the bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to Webb’s and that Webb’s will only look to the principal for payment. 4.4. International Registrations All International clients not known to Webb’s will be required to scan or fax through an accredited form of photo identification and pay a deposit at our discretion in cleared funds into Webb’s account at least 24 hours before the commencement of the auction. Bids will not be accepted without this deposit. Webb’s also reserves the right to request any additional forms of identification prior to registering an overseas bid. This deposit can be made using a credit card, however the balance of any purchase price in excess of $5,000 cannot be charged to this card without prior arrangement. This deposit is redeemable against any auction purchase and will be refunded in full if no purchases are made. 4.5. Absentee Bids Webb’s will use reasonable efforts to execute written bids delivered to us AT LEAST 24 Hours before the sale for the convenience of those clients who are unable to attend the auction in person. If we receive identical written bids on a particular lot, and at the auction these are the highest bids on that lot, then the lot will be sold to the person whose written bid was received and accepted first. Execution of written bids is a free service undertaken subject to other commitments at the time of the sale and we do not accept liability for failing to execute a written bid or for errors or omissions which may arise. It is the bidder’s responsibility to check with Webb’s after the auction if they were successful. Unlimited or “Buy” bids will not be accepted.

Webb's

4.6. Telephone Bids Priority will be given to overseas and bidders from other regions. Please refer to the catalogue for the Telephone Bids form. Arrangements for this service must be confirmed AT LEAST 24 HOURS PRIOR to the auction commencing. Webb’s accepts no responsibility whatsoever for any errors or failure to execute bids. In telephone bidding the buyer agrees to be bound by all terms and conditions listed here and accepts that Webb’s cannot be held responsible for any miscommunications in the process. The success of telephone bidding cannot be guaranteed due to circumstances that are unforeseen. Buyers should be aware of the risk and accept the consequences should contact be unsuccessful at the time of Auction. You must advise Webb’s of the lots in question, and you will be assumed to be a buyer at the minimum price of 75% of estimate (i.e. reserve) for all such lots. Webb’s will advise Telephone Bidders who have registered at least 24 hours before the auction of any relevant changes to descriptions, withdrawals, or any other sale room notices. 4.7. Online Bidding Webb’s offers an online bidding service. When bidding online the buyer agrees to be bound by all terms and conditions listed here by Webb’s. Webb’s accepts no responsibility for any errors, failure to execute bids or any other miscommunications regarding this process. It is the online bidder’s responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the relevant information regarding bids, lot numbers and contact details. Webb’s does not charge for this service. 4.8. Reserves Unless otherwise indicated, all lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which the Lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate printed in the catalogue. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any Lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the Seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. 4.9. Auctioneers Discretion The Auctioneer has the right at his/ her absolute and sole discretion to refuse any bid, to advance the bidding in such a manner as he/she may decide, to withdraw or divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots and, in the case or error or dispute and whether during or after the sale, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding, to cancel the sale or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, then Webb’s sale record is conclusive.

February

4.10. Successful Bid and Passing of Risk Subject to the auctioneer’s discretion, the highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer will be the buyer and the striking of his hammer marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract for sale between the Seller and the Buyer. Risk and responsibility for the lot (including frames or glass where relevant) passes immediately to the Buyer.

5.3. Collection of Purchases & Insurance Webb’s is entitled to retain items sold until all amounts due to us have been received in full in cleared funds. Subject to this, the Buyer shall collect purchased lots within 2 days from the date of the sale unless otherwise agreed in writing between Webb’s and the Buyer. At the fall of the hammer, insurance is the responsibility of the purchaser.

4.11. Indicative Bidding Steps, etc. Webb’s reserves the right to refuse any bid, withdraw any lot from sale, to place a reserve on any lot and to advance the bidding according to the following indicative steps: Increment Dollar Range Amount $20 $0–$500 $50 $500–$1,000 $100 $1,000–$2,000 $200 $2,000–$5,000 $500 $5,000–$10,000 $1,000 $10,000–$20,000 $2,000 $20,000–$50,000 $5,000 $50,000 – $100,000 $10,000 $100,000–$200,000 $20,000 $200,000–$500,000 $50,000 $500,000–$1,000,000 Absentee bids must follow these increments and any bids that don’t follow the steps will be rounded up to the nearest acceptable bid.
