FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS.

SOTHEBY’S: TWO NEW WORLD RECORDS Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction titled Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite offered an 8.41ct internally flawless fancy vivid purple-pink diamond estimated to be valued at $15.5 million. Among much international interest, a private Asian buyer purchased the diamond for $17.8 million—shattering the former world record of $10.8 million, which was set in November 2009 for a 5ct fancy vivid-pink diamond. Also on offer was the “Kashmir Imperial”, a 17.16ct natural intense cornflower-blue sapphire of a shade that is rarely encountered in today’s market. The gem also achieved a world auction record for price per carat for any sapphire when it sold for $236,404 per carat. Overall, the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction achieved $75.2 million, with 69% sold by lot.

TIME FOR SLENDER WOMEN’S WATCHES Over the past decade, the watch market has experienced a high demand for oversized wristwatches. Luckily for fans of the refined, the pendulum has swung back, with delicate and slender designs that almost resemble bracelets entering the market. These slim watches have an undeniable advantage, being able to do what large watches never could: slip seamlessly between day and evening. With powerhouses like Hermes, Chanel, Dior and Salvatore Ferragamo taking on this trend, no one can deny big things come in small packages. Without compromising on style or elegance, the Fabourg wristwatch was introduced by Hermes, with a dial that is just shy of 16 millimetres; and Dior’s the La Mini D de Dior has a dial of only 19 millimetres. The Fabourg wristwatch by Hermes.

‘A FINE POSSESSION’: JEWELLERY & IDENTITY To celebrate the significance of jewellery in our lives, Australia’s Powerhouse Museum currently has on display an elaborate selection of jewellery that spans across centuries, continents and cultures. With more than 700 pieces encapsulating various styles, materials and practices, ‘A Fine Possession’ tells the stories of jewellery designed, made and worn across the globe. The exhibition is curated around nine major themes: Belief and Magic, Love

and Death, Nature and Culture, Style and Revival, Gold and Identity, Status and Wealth, Men and Adornment, Modernity and Change, and, finally, Contemporary and Expressive. The exhibition effortlessly tells the history of jewellery as a key element in the evolution of our culture, offering a unique insight into the values and aspirations of society. From ancient Egyptian amulets through to bizarre and beautiful contemporary pieces, the exhibition will be on display until the 20th of September 2015.

LUXE INTELLIGENCE: A JEWELLER’S DEBUT Taking advantage of Paris Fashion Week, launched its inaugural event in the French capital. Jewellers including Sylvie Corbelin, Cleison Roche, Lygia Demades and Nicholas Liu (to name a few) made their debut at the inaugural event,

showcasing eclectic and colourful jewels all reflecting each jewellers’ style. Collectively, the group of artists demonstrated minimalist and/or architectural tendencies in their jewellery, and all were motivated by various sources of inspiration. With the first show an undeniable success, the Luxe Intelligent show is destined to become an annual affair.

From Left to Right: Orchid ring by Clerson Roche with emerald petals, Paraiba tourmalines, diamonds a central rubellite. Cloisonne Peony bangle by Dickson Yewn. Cabochon turquoise ring in a collet setting of yellow gold and silver by Lika Behar.

THE NEW IWC PORTOFINO MIDSIZE COLLECTION As a response to the ever-growing demand for watches set with diamonds, IWC will be enriched with seventeen new references to their collection. Unveiled at the Watch and Wonders exhibition in September of this year, the new Portofino Midsize Collection offers a variety of case materials, as well as different dial and strap colours. The flagship in this collection is a moon-phase complication that uses the Calibre 35800 self-winding movement with a 42-hour power reserve. The more refined models, with various diamond settings, clearly aim to capture the hearts and wrists of the ladies. CATALOGUE 394

The recent September Fine Jewellery & Watches auction was a successful reflection of the ongoing growth and reputation of this department and reaffirmed Webb’s leading position in the market for high value jewellery and premium brand watches.

“As 2014 comes to a close, we celebrate the second year of the new specialist team presenting innovative approaches to jewellery sales and marketing for the secondary market”

Highlights included an Edwardian opal fringe necklace with 28 cabochon opals in wire rub-over mounts, with a high estimate of $900, which achieved just under $2,000 at auction. The stylish art-deco emerald and diamond ring, with an estimated value of between $6,000 and $7,000, achieved in excess of $8,000, affirming the demand for stylish and unusual antique jewels. Proving that diamonds are still in favour with buyers, the stunning oval 2.01ct diamond cluster ring achieved $24,600, while the Boucheron solitaire diamond ring realised $15,500 and the beautiful Pasquale Bruni charm bracelet brought in $17,600.

Excellent results were secured for the vendors, with nationwide interest and multiple post-auction transactions making this a particularly rewarding sale. Both the Jewels: Buy/Sell/Collect and the Fine Jewellery & Watches auctions offered buyers antique and contemporary adornments and items, ranging in price from $40 to $140,000.

In contemporary jewellery, the Warwick Freeman acrylic shell and linen neckpiece achieved in excess of $2,600, while the sterling silver and pearl Guenter Taemmler brooch earned $1,300 well above the high estimate of $700. These results highlight the importance of these artists’ works in the secondary market. Countless private transactions have been brokered through Webb’s on behalf of clients and our direct access to an international diamond supply uniquely qualifies Webb’s to facilitate lucrative transactions off the auction floor as well as on it.

ANATOMY OF A DIAMOND FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES

A diamond is a type of crystallised carbon formed at extremely high temperatures and under immense pressure. This process, naturally occurring about 200 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, produces one of the hardest and most precious of all known natural substances. No two diamonds are the same. A diamond’s worth and quality are determined by the Four Cs: a concept first introduced by De Beers in 1939.

WEBB’S

THE FOUR C’S CUT - COLOUR - CLARITY- CARET WEIGHT The Quality and Value of a Diamond is determined by the 4 C’s. Diamonds with the highest 4C ratios are the rarest and therefore the most valuable.

CUT

COLOUR

A diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. Diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the midrange ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.

Ideally, a white diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale ranging from no colour at all (D) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. Natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour.

CLARITY Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. All diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless and flawless) to I (included); also, grade may indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle or outer edge.

CARAT-WEIGHT Carat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram.

WEBB’S

IMPORTANT CONDITIONS OF SALES JEWELS Buy/Sell/Collect

Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on.

An exceptional offering of antique and desirable modern pieces, amongst which are diamond rings, heavy gold chains, several gold wrist and pocket watches, diamond and precious stone rings, earrings, heavy silver chains, rock-crystal beads, lockets, pendants, 19th-century paste set jewellery and many other items of interest, mostly without reserve.

FINE JEWELLERY

Important Conditions of Sale for Watches:

Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations:

As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.

Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc). Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

WRIST & POCKET WATCHES

THE RULE OF ‘CAVEAT EMPTOR’ APPLIES UNIVERSALLY TO ALL AUCTIONS. Webb’s acts as an agent only and all items are sold at auction together with any relevant reports and valuations. If these differ in any way from other reports or opinions on the same items, this will not be deemed as a reason for the cancellation of a sale. The rule of ‘Caveat Emptor’ applies universally to auctions. The buyer will be assumed to have examined the items and be satisfied about their authenticity and originality. Webb’s endeavours to describe all lots as accurately as possible but makes no guarantee as to the material content of items such as gold, silver, platinum, diamond, sapphire or any other material. By bidding at any of Webb’s auctions, buyers will be deemed to acknowledge this important condition and take full responsibility for their participation in any sale.

Credit cards are not accepted. 6. LOTS SOLD AS VIEWED. All lots are sold as viewed and with all errors to description faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Webb’s has used its skills and experience to ensure the genuineness or authenticity of each lot but, as it is impossible to provide conclusive proof of genuineness or authenticity for most items, buyers should proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects. 7. WEBB’S ACT AS AGENTS. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason. 8. COLLECTION. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer’s expense immediately after the sale once payment in full has been made. If this is not done, Webb’s will not be responsible if the lot is lost stolen damaged or destroyed. Any payment by cheque will not be considered paid until the payment has cleared. Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to delivery of any lot. 9. LICENCES. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Webb’s a license under the appropriate Act. 10. FAILURE TO MAKE PAYMENT. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot Webb’s shall without further notice to the purchaser at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies: A. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract. 80

Webb’s shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any money remains unpaid under this contract. H. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb’s towards any money owing to Webb’s in respect of anything whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of or restriction placed upon such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied. I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased in held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11. BIDDERS DEEMED PRINCIPALS. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid including both telephone and absentee bids.
