Great SAYLES Experience!
Buying a new vehicle can be intimidating! How do you know for sure if you can trust your salesman to hear your concerns and care about your interests? After all, car salesmen have quite a reputation! Rest assured though that not all car salesmen have the same motivations. Some truly want what’s best for you and they’ll be there for you long after the sale is over. Rob Sayles at Stillwell Ford Lincoln is one of those guys. He refuses to lie to sell a car, and he works hard to get you what you want. He’s established quite the clientele base over the past twelve and a half years he’s been with Stillwell Ford Lincoln and many of his clients have become repeat customers, often referring friends and family to him. Glory To God:
Working to keep you on the road! Story by Melissa McCance Photos by Synergy Studios
If any one thing is identifiable with life in the United States, it would be our vehicles. Cars, trucks, SUVs … most Americans love what’s parked in their driveways. And, in more rural areas, having a reliable vehicle is essential because many of us live where public transportation is unavailable. Owner Robert Shewman and the crew at Glory to God are ready to provide you with reliable, skilled service to make sure that whatever you drive is ready to take you where you need to go. Glory to God was started in Hillsdale 40 years ago by Robert’s father, Harold Shewman, as a towing service. The family relocated to Colorado in 1981 where the business expanded to towing and service. They returned to Hillsdale in 1985 and the business expanded further. From the very beginning, the guiding principle was simple and meaningful: to glorify God in everything they do. “That is how we started in 1981, and although we may fall short as humans, that is still our goal and desire each and every time we service your vehicle. When he started out with just the wrecker, my dad told people, ‘Pay what you feel the Lord would have you pay,’” explains Robert. “There was no set charge.” Robert began working in the family business while in high school and went full time in 1992. Like many beginning mechanics, he started with oil changes and progressed to brake jobs and electrical work. There are currently five on staff at Glory to God including Robert, and the mechanics have a combined total of over 100 years’ experience. Glory to God offers a wide range of services to keep your car or truck running properly including oil changes, air conditioning service, brake jobs, alignment, electrical work, exhaust systems, transmissions, and engines. Although they don’t rebuild transmissions or engines, you can purchase rebuilt units through them, and those come with a nationwide warranty. To help make things 10
more convenient, they offer local shuttle service for their customers, and there is free Wi-Fi on site so you can get some work done if you’re waiting for the work to be completed. If you need new tires, Glory to God can help you find just the right tire to fit your vehicle and suit the type of driving you do. With the wide range of tire sizes found on today’s cars and trucks as well as the many advances in tire manufacture, talking to someone who really knows about them can not only ensure you’re not paying more than you should but also help you be safer on the road. Trouble on the road is never a good thing, and Glory to God offers a service plan that can provide real peace of mind. If you have any service performed at the shop, you will get a one-year plan that provides roadside assistance to help with things like flat tires, dead batteries, keys locked in the car, running out of gas, etc.
From the very beginning, the guiding principle was simple and meaningful: to glorify God in everything they do. “That is still our goal and desire each and every time we service your vehicle.”
If you have your car repaired or serviced, you want to know that the people doing it stand behind their work. This is definitely the case at Glory to God. Parts and labor are covered for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. Customer satisfaction is always the goal of the service team.
Glory to God is located at 146 Lewis Street in Hillsdale. Their hours are Monday through Friday from 8 to 5, closed Saturday and Sunday. You can reach them at 517-439-1323 or by email at service@glorytogod.com. Their website is www. glorytogod.com, and you can also follow them on Facebook.
In recognition of the business’s anniversary, they now have a second logo that was created with help from artist David Youngman. The new logo is CarSense, and Robert explains its meaning this way: “This is how we work together: your car, your sense, your cents. You know your car better than anyone, and your senses will alert you to any change that may need to be addressed. When your senses pick up on something, we are here to diagnose and evaluate for you and to give you options to save you the most cents.” Family is important to Robert; his wife Theresa and their six children are a major part of his life. There are also five grandchildren in the family, so you know that things can get lively in the Shewman household! When asked what he enjoys most about what he does, Robert summed it up simply: “Seeing cars fixed. Customers coming in with a problem and leaving without one!” 11
MUSCLE UP. live fit By James Campbell
TAKING AN UNPLANNED BREAK
Hello, my friends! I hope this issue reaches all of you in good health and high spirits. As I sit here writing this article for you, I find myself on a much-needed break. However needed though, it’s been forced upon me. As many others before me and probably many more after, I’ve tested positive for Covid. No worries though, I had an extremely mild case. It started as a low-grade fever and some minor body aches, much like most flus I’ve had since being a child. Don’t mistake this for me downplaying the virus; I know it’s real. I don’t mean insult to anyone that has had or knows someone who’s had a much more severe reaction. Me personally though, I’ve had colds hit harder. I’d like to take this opportunity to express my concern with the masses, though. I didn’t get hit hard because I take care of myself day in and day out physically and mentally (mentally is way harder). Think about this for a minute . . . . Being in good health helps your body fight off all foreign “viruses” that enter your body. This is a wakeup call in so many ways, but if people don’t realize the negative effects of obesity, poor sleep habits, and poor nutrition, then this is only the beginning for many. It really bothers me when some are so quick to point the finger at people who aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do but refuse to look in the mirror themselves. 12
It’s no secret, I’m not for masks. So when someone points their finger at me while drinking their third Mountain Dew and shoveling in McD’s, I have to ask, why? By following that lifestyle that mask isn’t going to save you, your enemy is underneath that mask. A mask won’t reduce the risk factors you’re creating: obesity, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, heart disease. I’m not perfect, don’t aim to be. What I am is an individual and I don’t aim to be any different than that. I take information in and use it to decide what I feel is best. I want you to help yourself and the ones around you be better individuals. Be healthier individuals. The world, especially we Americans, are losing our way. We’ve developed into a nation of hypersensitive, participation trophy winning whiners. We need to be strong! We need to be healthy!! We need to be better! Just some random thoughts from a fitness guy! Thanks for reading, see you again soon. Muscle up … live FIT!

Trust Us... It is Personal!
There’s no shortage of free fitness guides and tips on the internet and social media, which is great -- but sometimes it’s more overwhelming than helpful. Figuring out which workout plans to follow, what actually works for your goals, what kind of exercise equipment you need, and if you can even stick to the workout plan is a daunting task. If you can relate to this last point, hiring a personal trainer may be a great solution to get more personalized plans that work for you. Hiring a personal trainer can be well worth your time, even if you are only able to work with one on a short-term basis. A personal trainer can help tailor a custom plan just for you and provide invaluable support and accountability in your fitness journey. No matter if you’re just starting out, or maybe you took a break from working out and want to get back into it, a trainer is the perfect person to make sure you are doing exercises correctly and making the most of your time at the gym. But, don’t judge a trainer by his biceps alone! Find a local trainer who is well-accredited. Being a member of the community, he will have a vested interest in your success.

YOUR GO-TO PLACE FOR PARTS! By Melissa McCance
WE’RE BETTER BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE For people who aren’t savvy about automotive repair, walking into Performance Automotive can be a bewildering but interesting experience. For those in the know, however, the incredible array of parts provides the solution to just about every repair problem. And, even if people don’t know exactly what is needed for their repairs, owner Rich Galloway and his staff will do their best to figure it out. Performance Automotive has two area locations: 30 Union Street in Hillsdale and 490 S. M99 in Jonesville. The business started in 1960 under a different name and became Performance Automotive in the mid-1980s. Rich joined the staff in November 1991: “I started on the ground level, doing deliveries, sweeping the floor, that kind of thing.” The owners at that time purchased the Jonesville store in 1993. Rich bought in as a partner in August 2000 and became sole owner in July 2008. Between the two stores, Performance Automotive currently employs 20 people.
16
In addition to stocking parts for cars and light trucks, the stores have parts for heavy trucks, trailers, and farm machinery. If they don’t have it, they will do their best to find a source and order the part for a customer, although, as for many other businesses, supply can be a problem right now. “Fortunately, we have a number of suppliers we deal with and that helps a lot. If one doesn’t have it, we contact the others and can usually track down the parts,” explains Rich. Performance Automotive also has an engine repair machine shop on site. Don’t hesitate to come in if you know there’s a problem but you’re not sure what it is or what you need to fix it. The combined knowledge and experience of the employees enables them to help you figure out what’s going on and find the right parts needed for the repair. When asked what makes Performance Automotive the right place to go for parts, Rich replied, “We sell quality parts at a
fair price. You really don’t want to use the cheapest part available—they won’t perform as well or last as long. Also, a lot of our employees have been with us long-term and many have automotive backgrounds. We work well as a team and that helps us provide better service.” With the advent of computerized components in so many vehicles and the need for expensive diagnostic equipment to assess the problem, Rich says that he’s seeing his business trending slowly to service garages. However, for anyone up to the task or if you’re working on an older, less electronic vehicle, there’s a good chance you’ll find just what you need at Performance Automotive. Both stores are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Jonesville location is also open on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can reach the Hillsdale store at 517-437-4465; the Jonesville location number is 517-849-7500.

Life is the Berries Does she fight dirty?
Anyone else need to work on communication as husband and wife? My hubster and I work on our relationship daily. Whew! By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker, Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences, Caricature Artist
20
The second part of this verse is my hubster’s area to improve. He asks himself, “Does my anger display the righteousness of God?” If man/ human anger does not produce the righteousness of God, it is not right. It is wrong.
We discovered a great Bible verse to help. We currently focus on this verse found in the book of James. James is a book in the Bible that I call the “Proverbs of the New Testament.” It contains wisdom. We can gain knowledge when studying James, chapter one. It’s practical. It spells out advice to heed.
God’s anger is not a self-defensive trigger when hurt feelings kick inside. No. Anger shouted in defense, when we wield it against those who hurt us, is not God’s righteous anger. It is not healthy and not justified anger.
“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” James 1: 19-20
Righteous anger comes from a godly desire for justice. It is anger, without sin, concerning what God opposes. Righteous anger springs from wanting people to know and worship God genuinely.
The first part of this verse is my trouble zone. I need to listen with the intent to understand. We both benefit when I think before I speak. I sometimes use meanish words before I think through my point. There are kind approaches and unkind approaches. I need to be kind. Wordage is crucial. Body language is important. Tone is key.
Husbands and wives can benefit from gaining the wisdom found in these Bible verses. Memorizing James 1:19-20 verses and asking ourselves, “Am I quick to listen? Am I slow to speak? Am I slow to anger? Is my anger man’s anger or God’s anger? Does my anger produce the righteousness of God?”
One area we check is our tone. We figured out tone can best be judged by the receiver. The deliverer often inaccurately judges his or her own tone. Let the receiver, not the deliverer, share if the deliverer’s tone stinks. This helps our communication significantly.
If not, we can stop, humble ourselves, cool down, pray together, quote this verse, ask these questions, apologize, check our tone, check our body language, and check our words for kindness. We desire our marriage to uplift each other. It takes work. This is our homework.
I’ve got work to do on myself.
Do you fight dirty? Perhaps this will benefit you, too. (Eyerolls not necessary. Wink. Wink.)
It is not.

Autumn in the Mitten
It’s no secret that beautiful Michigan comes alive in the fall when the dramatic color change of the foliage lights up the state
F
rom the upper peninsula to the lower peninsula, from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, and from Lake Superior to Lake Erie, the changing colors of the leaves throughout the state are truly magnificent.
The 2021 Michigan Fall Color Report is in, and it’s clear that the fall foliage viewing is going to be spectacular this year. We’re sharing some of our favorite spots to view Michigan fall colors with a map to help you find the best spots for your autumn color tour. Fall in Michigan is simply stunning. It’s one reason why travelers from across the country put Michigan right at the top of their MUST-Sees every autumn. For some, it just wouldn’t be fall without a Michigan Fall Color Tour during peak fall color time. Michigan’s vibrant peak colors demand an audience, and our fall foliage map will help you plan your scenic drive, outdoor adventures, and autumn weekend getaways for a pure Michigan fall of fun.
And fall is FUN in Michigan. Cider mills, apple orchards, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches all seem to spring up out of nowhere during autumn in Michigan, and the colorful foliage looks even brighter against the backdrop of a clear, blue Michigan sky.

FALL CAMPING
IN Michigan
As the warmth of summer transitions into fall, people find themselves slowing down in sync with the changing of the seasons, daydreaming of their favorite jeans, buttoning up fall jackets, colorful foliage, and warm comfort food. How‑ ever, others are gearing up for some cool fall camping to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, fall fishing, hunting, or just being outdoors in autumn. 24 24
n
Since residents and visitors are never more than a half-hour away from a Michigan state park or recreation area, state forest rustic campground, state trail, or waterway, there are plenty of opportunities to savor Michigan’s great outdoors this fall. Fall camping can include everything from tent camping in state parks and recreation areas, traveling in a pop-up camper or RV and enjoying a rustic riverside campground experience to backpacking through state forests. While camping is a traditional summertime pastime, fall camping has its own set of advantages. Camping reservations are much easier to find in the fall and campers can reap the benefits of less-crowded campgrounds and the beautiful colors of fall foliage. Fall color is predicted to peak, depending on location, through the end of October. Travelers can use Pure Michigan’s fall travel peak season map to seek the best part of the state to visit. In addition, many Michigan state parks and recreation areas are preparing their fall harvest festivals throughout September and October. More than 30 state parks and recreation areas offer these family-friendly “Harvest and Haunts” events, which include hayrides, pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, costume contests, haunted trails, cider and donuts, and horse-drawn carriage rides. Many state parks now offer alternative lodging options. Camper cabins, yurts, cottages, and lodges are available in select parks and offer a different camping or outdoor experience. There are even a handful of pop-up campers available. There are also more than 130 state forest rustic campgrounds located throughout the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula. Most of these campgrounds are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. It is also a great time of the year to take advantage of angling opportunities. Many fish species are available throughout the year. However, fall can be an ideal time for trout and salmon, particularly steelhead. Visitors don’t necessarily have to camp to connect with the outdoors. Michigan’s 103 state parks and recreation areas are a great day trip. Visitors can explore hundreds of miles of scenic state trails which are perfect for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Michigan state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, trails, and fee-based boat launches are funded through the Recreation Passport. For $12, vehicles registered in Michigan gain access to hundreds of outdoor recreation destinations throughout the four seasons. The passport has a different fee structure for out-of-state vehicles. Camping fees are additional. For a relatively few dollars per night, travelers are hard-pressed to find more affordable overnight options.

Your Eye on the Weather! By Melissa McCance
SnowFreaks is creating accurate winter weather predictions with a bit of humor and fun on Patreon. Michigan can get all four seasons in a week and temperature shifts of 40° or more in a day. Dependable forecasts are a huge help, and one of the best sources available for lower Michigan is SnowFreaks! SnowFreaks is a man with a passion for weather and a high rate of accuracy. Read on to learn more including how to subscribe. How and when did you become so fascinated with weather? I was five years old, maybe six! I just LOVED snow, probably due to always wanting a snow day to play with my friends from morning to night. I remember watching the weather channel 24/7. How do you create forecasts? There are several weather models that update every 12 hours up to every hour. There are a few well-known ones, and I also have a couple experimental and in-house models that use history, low pressure placement, and pressure. History almost always repeats itself in every aspect of life; weather is no different. With that said, it’s impossible to be 100% correct, but I am 85% correct. In weather, that’s a pretty big accomplishment. I truly just have a gift from God. I believe it is due to the fact I LOVE weather, especially snow! Nothing is more amazing to me than when I see it coming down at 1”-3” per hour. (Unless, of course, you’re driving in it.) How much time do you typically invest per week in tracking, forecasting, and sharing? Some weeks, a couple of hours. Some weeks, up to 100 hours. Truly, it all depends on Mother Nature! What do you enjoy most about doing this? Being right as much as possible, of course! A few things: Since I have started, I’ve had so many parents reach out and tell me how their kids are the same way—just fascinated with weather and especially snow! Makes me smile and think back … I love it. Helping out the people who plow snow for a living. They message
me often thanking me and can’t believe how accurate I was. Makes me feel good knowing I helped someone. Giving all the glory to GOD and ALWAYS donating every single month to the organization my followers vote for! Why and when did you start the SE Michigan SnowFreaks Facebook page? I’ve done it for years, but a couple years before I did FB, I started really getting into it again. I just noticed how good I was at it. The Super Bowl storm we had several years ago was my “big break,” if you want to call it that. I had around 5,000 followers. I said the entire time that many areas would see 12”-20+” when many others were calling for two to four inches, seven at the most. So many were laughing at me, saying to delete the page and what a joke it was. Well, as they say, after that the rest is history, as I was spot on! When did you decide to go on a subscription basis? When it started taking time away from my family. One week I literally didn’t sleep for three days! I put in around 90 hours watching all the different models and trends. Also, I do have another full-time career. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would become as big as it has. This is still my passion which is why I always run weather-related contests and give back the way I do! How many people subscribe across all levels? It ranges from 7,000 to 13,000. Highest totals are always November through March (snow). I have a lot of positive feedback on it. How can someone subscribe? Go to Patreon.com or download the Patreon app, then search for SnowFreaks. [Note: Subscriptions provide access full to all posts, maps, forecasts, and updates as well as all comments with text alerts if you download the app. Rates start as low as $1.99 per month.] Anything you’d like to add? Yes … SnowFreaks and God Bless!

Restored
CHEVY is Really TRUCK Turning Heads! By Melissa McCance
If you like the square body Chevy pickups from the 80s, Shane Miller has a beautifully restored example of this vehicle, but don’t expect to see it out on the street. Since the total restoration was completed, Shane says he has only put about 550 miles on the truck. “I don’t have it out on the road, driving around,” he explains. “It stays in the garage most of the time. Last spring my daughter asked if she could drive it to prom. That got a quick ‘No!’” 28
Shane purchased the 1987 K10 4x4 truck in 2018 from a private owner in the area and turned it over to Bryan Dunlap, owner of City Collision in Hillsdale, for the restoration. The truck was originally black and red, and Shane thought he’d stay with that color scheme until Bryan suggested going a different route. All outside insignia was removed, and the final paint job is a sharp metallic pewter gray. “Bryan is really picky about his work, which was what I wanted. I knew he’d do a great job,” says Shane. “He gets all the credit for how beautifully the truck turned out.”
When asked if he’d been looking for one of these trucks or just happened to come across it, Shane replied, “As a kid growing up, this was a real common vehicle. My dad was a car guru and I picked up my interest from him. I always kind of had the itch for one of these.”
Bryan began the restoration in 2019 and it took about 18 months to complete. The truck now has a 470 horsepower 5.3l LS swap engine, and a custom-made stainless steel exhaust system. A 2.5” lift kit was installed along with LED lights. The original side windows featured the small, triangular vent window at the front that was common in vehicles from that era, and they were replaced with one piece power windows. The entire interior was replaced so the truck has new upholstery and the dash now has Dakota Digital gauges. Factory air now makes summer driving a lot more comfortable, and 20” wheels with 35” tires complete the impressive exterior.
Naturally, such a great truck deserves to be shown off a bit! Shane entered it in the car show that was part of the 2021 Summer in the City event in Hillsdale, and he was rewarded with a Best Truck in Show award. He would like to take it to more car shows as they become available, and he has really enjoyed the public’s response to his very special vehicle.

The Skinny On FATS! By Melissa McCance
When we decide to drop some weight and/or get in shape, one of the first things a lot of us do is go low-fat or nonfat. The common saying of “fat makes you fat” sounds reasonable, and we are bombarded by advertising celebrating packaged foods that are now lower in fat and calories. The truth is, though, that fat as a nutrient is not the total dietary bad guy people make it out to be. What’s more, a certain amount of the right kinds of fat is essential for good health! Fat provides energy, and, by slowing digestion somewhat, it can keep your hunger satisfied longer. Other benefits to adequate fat in the diet are promoting cell growth, aiding in the production of important hormones, helping to regulate blood sugar, and maintaining body temperature. Also, the fat-soluble vitamins—A, D, E, and K—require fat to be absorbed by the body. All fats regardless of type have nine calories per gram. But, trans fats and saturated fats contribute more to raising your LDL (the bad cholesterol) in your blood while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats provide the needed benefits of dietary fat without that risk. In fact, they can lower the level of LDL in the blood. There are many foods that will help you get appropriate levels of fat into your diet. Just remember that healthful fat is still fat and calorie-dense with over twice as many calories per gram than protein or carbohydrates. So, while you do need fat in your diet, shifting to better fats doesn’t mean you can go crazy and eat huge amounts of them. Moderation is the key here!
Some of the best sources of healthful fat are: • Naturally fatty fish like salmon, herring, mackerel, lake trout, and albacore tuna • Avocado • Seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame • Nuts (Be careful here as this is a food that’s very easy to overdo! A serving of nuts is one ounce which is about 14 walnut halves, 23 almonds, 28 peanuts, or 18 cashews. If you start chowing down on handfuls of nuts, you’re going to be consuming a lot of calories.) • Olive oil (Again—don’t go overboard.) • Eggs (You can boost the benefit by looking for eggs that are enriched with extra omega-3 acids.) • Ground flaxseed (Bonus benefit from extra fiber!) • Beans (kidney, navy, Great Northern, or navy) Eating better doesn’t mean you have to banish saturated fat from your diet completely. After all, a lot of us don’t want to contemplate life without burgers, steaks, or ribs! But, try choosing leaner cuts when you can and don’t make those foods the majority of your diet. The same goes for butter. And, trans fats definitely need to go, as they have the worst effect on LDL levels in the blood. As easy way to dodge these fats is to look for partially-hydrogenated oils (or PHO) in the ingredient lists on foods. If you spot that term, take a hard pass. So, add some delicious richness to your diet with healthful fats! Your body will thank you.

POUR ME SOMETHING
GOOD
So you don’t want to give up your morning bowl, but you want to give an uptick to your nutrition. Then start at the bottom and work your way up. When buying cereal, use the 5:5:10 rule: at least 5 grams of fiber, 5 grams of protein, and no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. Add milk, and match the toppings to your mission, whether it’s to beef up your biceps or shed those extra 5 pounds. BRAIN POWER — ADD —1/4 cup dark chocolate pieces —1 cup blackberries Studies suggest the antioxidants in dark chocolate can give you a quick cognitive charge. For long-term benefits, add berries which are proven to aid memory over time. HEALTHIER HEART — ADD —1/3 cup sliced almonds —1 large apple, any type, sliced Nuts contain magnesium and selenium, minerals that may ward off heart disease. Then add a sliced apple for the pectin, a form of fiber that can reduce cholesterol. BIGGER MUSCLES — ADD —4 oz plain Greek yogurt, instead of milk —1/4 cup unsalted pumpkin seeds If you have an hour or more before lifting, add 15 grams of muscle-building protein to your bowl such as pumpkin seeds and Greek yogurt. Working out soon? Add fast-digesting carbs, like dried cherries, instead. FLATTER BELLY — ADD —1 Tbsp ground chia seeds —1 greener (i.e., less ripe) banana, sliced Focus on fiber. It fills you up faster and longer, so you’re less likely to be hungry midmorning. Add chia seeds that contain soluble fiber and green bananas that possess resistant starch, a fiber that can help you burn fat.
