Jessica Schulte, a certified physician assistant at Karim HealthCare, says she was thrilled to be offered a position at Karim HealthCare.
“This is my first job out of school,” Jessica explains “I just really liked the work environment, the people, and the smalltown feel of the offices ”
Originally from the Detroit area, in 2018, Jessica received her bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan
She then went on to attend Eastern Michigan University, graduating with a master’s degree in physician assistant studies in 2021.
Just like everyone at Karim HealthCare, Jessica strives to provide high-quality healthcare for her patients. This led to her taking a job at Karim HealthCare in 2021.

One big thing that initially drew her to the medical field was a long-time interest in science.
“I’ve always been interested in how things work and what better system is there to study than the human body? I also really like helping people and when you combine those two things, you end up with medicine,” she says.
Jessica now works in family medicine, something she was inspired to pursue after discovering how many opportunities there are to counsel patients on how a healthy lifestyle can help prevent and intervene in cases of chronic disease.
“Diet and exercise are important to look at together in the context of medicine,” she says.
“The Hillsdale office feels faster paced and there’s a lot more going on. It’s nice having more interaction with coworkers there,” Jessica explains. “But I appreciate the days in Pittsford where it’s quieter and I have the opportunity to spend extra time with my patients.”
In her day-to-day interactions with patients, Jessica strives to build strong relationships with them.
In her career, Jessica loves to educate patients on healthy lifestyle choices. And Jessica practices what she preaches. In her personal life, eating healthy and exercising are priorities.
“I’m very interested in longevity and I love teaching my patients the things that I’ve learned, even outside of my formal medical education,” she explains.
She also enjoys providing specific and personalized advice for each patient, all based on what they are facing medically.
Working in family medicine, Jessica sees a wide range of patients.
Jessica splits her time between the Hillsdale and Pittsford locations of Karim HealthCare each week.
“The only challenge I have working in two buildings is having to lug my stuff back and forth,” Jessica says, laughing.
She says she likes the variety of working in two different locations.
“I love seeing the same patients regularly. I want them to feel like this is a partnership in the way that we’re working together towards their health. I’ll make recommendations,” she says. “While some of them may be very strong recommendations, ultimately, it is important that I meet patients where they are.”
In her free time, Jessica enjoys cooking and spending time with her fiancé renovating rental properties
. Karim HealthCare has many different locations, providing care throughout southeast Michigan. They are always accepting patients and Jessica says she is eager to meet more of the Hillsdale and Pittsford communities.
The clinic is a comprehensive practice that provides hospital services, primary care, respiratory and sleep services, as well as lab, pharmaceutical, and sameday appointments.
Jessica works at the Hillsdale location of Karim HealthCare Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9-5. and at the Pittsford location Tuesday and Thursday from 9-5.
To schedule an appointment at the Hillsdale office, call (517) 437-3879. For the Pittsford office, call (517)594-5144. Visit karimhealthcare.com for more information.
“I enjoy having the opportunity to work with patients who have a little bit less education on those things because there’s a lot of opportunity for improvement.”

Advanced Veins and Vascular Management a nationally-accredited ambulatory vascular center has been providing excellent vascular care to Hillsdale and the surrounding communities. In the last 30 years, dramatic and transformational changes have happened in the field of vascular surgery. The traditional open surgical procedures, performed in the operating room, are replaced by a non-surgical or minimally invasive approach performed in the ambulatory vascular setting. Advanced Veins and Vascular Management 3271 W Carleton Rd Suite 2 Hillsdale, 49242 517-797-5265 veinsandvascular.com The experienced team of Advanced Veins and Vascular Management. 13
Q with Advanced Veins and Vascular Management
A &
Dr. Abushmaies has been providing vascular care to the Hillsdale community for 25 years. As he is celebrating his many years of service to this area, we sat with Dr. Abushmaies to talk about the value and impact of establishing an ambulatory vascular center serving Hillsdale and surrounding counties.
Can you please tell us about your professional background?
I am a board-certified vascular surgeon with 30 years’ experience in this field. I was seeing patients in a small office in Jonesville; it was a clinic operated by Hillsdale hospital at the time. Initially, most testing for vascular disease and procedures were performed in the traditional way with open surgery and patients had to commute to Battle Creek or Kalamazoo for their definitive procedures.
Due to the increasing prevalence of vascular disease and the recent advances in providing minimally invasive procedures on an outpatient basis, the concept of providing ambulatory, quality, safe, and state-of-the-art treatment was born.
Advanced Veins and Vascular Management (AVVM), an ambulatory vascular center accredited by the Joint Commission, was established three years ago, just a few months before the COVID 19 pandemic. There was an outpouring of support from the medical community and positive feedback from patients. That was vital in AVVM’s growth and success in meeting the needs of the community.
A.K. Abushmaies M.D., FACS, RPVI

Vasular Suite with advanced equipment at Advanced Veins and Vascular Management.
Is an ambulatory vascular center a new concept?
The concept was introduced by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services in 2008. This was born out of the need to meet the increasing demand for vascular treatment due to significant increase of the incidence of peripheral vascular disease (PAD). It reduces wait time and contains the rapidly increasing cost of taking care of those patients in the hospital setting. There are currently over 700 centers in the U.S. specializing in ambulatory vascular care.
With the technological advances such as the invention of small catheters, tools, stents, and balloons, it became safe and feasible to treat venous disease, complex arterial blockages, and dialysis access shunts, in a patient-centered, intimate environment in an ambulatory vascular center, without jeopardizing safety or quality.
What type of services does the AVVM center provide and where do the patients you treat come from?
We provide comprehensive vascular care from the time of the first initial visit to completing the full treatment all in the same location. We have an onsite vascular lab that is fully accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), fully staffed with registered vascular technologists who can perform professionally all non-invasive diagnostic vascular ultrasounds, using the state-of-the-art equipment.
Our center is equipped with the most advanced imaging capabilities, tools, and machines for de-clotting and removing plaque from the arterial system, restoring circulation to the legs to allow help with healing ulceration, and preventing amputation using this non-surgical option. We provide all non-surgical treatments for varicose veins and all vein-related condition such as swelling legs, open wounds, and ulceration.
Our procedures are done in a safe, sterile environment, using conscious sedation that eliminates any pain or discomfort to the patient. Our patients are mostly from the Hillsdale County area. However, being the only ambulatory vascular center operated by a vascular surgeon within a 50-mile radius, we are increasingly serving many patients from Branch, St. Joseph, and Jackson counties. We are seeing more patients from across state lines as well.
How did the COVID 19 pandemic affect your ability to provide services to your patients?
During the lockdown, we had to reschedule most of our elective procedures, complying with performing what was deemed as urgent essential care. However, the pandemic proved the benefit of ambulatory surgical centers and ambulatory vascular centers in providing essential care and urgent procedures where hospital beds were occupied and could not accept those patients.
For example, T.S. presented with clotted dialysis access during the restrictions. We could not find any hospital bed for him to be treated as an inpatient. Our staff were caring and kind to help; we opened the center and performed a de-clotting of the dialysis access, and he was dialyzed the same day and is doing well to date.
Another example is J.R., a 65-year-old man who presented with the limb-threatening situation of complete blockage of the circulation to his leg. There were no beds in any surrounding hospital in Michigan to transfer him, nor even Toledo or Fort Wayne. We were able to remove the clot from his leg using a nonsurgical approach at AVVM, restore his circulation, and save his leg.
What type of set up and expertise is required to be able to deliver such a service?
Treating peripheral vascular disease is demanding and can be very challenging. Most vascular patients have underlying heart and lung conditions which need to be optimized with open procedures. Avoiding open, hospital-based procedures has been shown to reduce complications and infection rates with greater patient satisfaction and quality of outcome. This is especially true when treatment is offered at a dedicated, sterile, intimate environment with a staff that is knowledgeable, trained to a level of expertise, and focused exclusively on the treatment of vascular conditions.
Our team members hold the highest qualifications and certification in the vascular field. In addition, extensive experience, advanced imaging capability, state-of-the-art equipment to navigate the blocked arteries, and removing plaques are vital. Quality measures and safety are equally important. AVVM is proud to be accredited by the Joint Commission and holds the golden seal of approval.
How does your center and the care you provide fit in within the Hillsdale hospital services?
Over the last 25 years I have had a great relationship with and support from the medical community in Hillsdale and I am very thankful for making this project succeed, bringing the community close to home quality vascular care. We use the radiological and laboratory services and complement other services provided by the hospital. I have great collaboration with the wound care clinic, have continued to provide emergency room and inpatient consultation, and done procedures when judged to be appropriate with specific interest and focus on limb salvage and preventing amputation.
Our main goal is to grow this mutually supportive relationship and partnership for the good of the Hillsdale community. I think we share the same vision.

This piece will work overtime in your wardrobe. Go for a neutral like a grey, beige, or warm hue, especially if you are not overly adventurous when it comes to color. Look for a longer, cover-the-bum length and preferably with pockets. (I swear to you, having pockets is so important in sweaters and jackets … we are moms so we have to carry ALL THE THINGS.)
LEGGINGS
We all know moms can’t live without their leggings; they are the mom-i-form. But step it up with some leather-look, shiny, or moto style leggings. A big trend right now is having a sheer leg panel. But it’s spring, and one of the best specifically spring fashion tips is to go for the printed or colored ones!
SLIP ON SNEAKERS
We love a simple black leather pair with a white sole. Slip on and go. Or go for something a little more fun in a pattern, an embroidered flower detail, or fancier fabric like satin or velvet. These are great for the playground, the grocery store, or a coffee date with a friend. The possibilities are endless.

SLUGGING The Beauty of
Slugging — A skincare trend which includes coating your face in petrolatum or Vaseline. This is meant to prevent transepidermal water loss and keep moisture in your skin. It’s best for dry skin types.
20
Slugging is the beauty trend of generously applying a petroleum-based product as the final step in your routine to help lock and seal in your skincare products overnight and then washing it off with a cleanser the next day. The slugging skincare routine is so-named because after slathering your face in an occlusive, your skin ends up looking slimy and shiny – rather like the trail of a slug or snail!
Slugging creates a seal over the skin, prevents transepidermal water loss, and protects and repairs your skin’s natural lipid barrier that binds skin cells together. By reinforcing the lipid barrier, it is artificially strengthening the way that your skin protects itself.
Moisturizers hydrate your skin, while petroleumbased products lock in that hydration. While products like petroleum jelly lock in moisture, they don’t actually moisturize the skin. Slugging doesn’t offer any moisturizing benefits of its own, but it can enhance the benefits of your already-effective moisturizer.
After your regular cleansing and moisturizing routine at night, take a peasized amount of petroleum and gently spread it onto your fingertips. To prevent your face from getting super greasy, apply only a very thin layer of ointment
This is not a permanent solution but works better for those with short-term skin dryness or damage. Keep in mind that slugging has to be the last thing you do at the end of your routine. So, if you forget a step in your regimen, you either have to skip it or cleanse off the occlusive layer and start over.
Be aware, for those with very oily or acne-prone skin, slugging might not be for you. Coating your face with heavy petroleum-based occlusives could trap impurities in the skin and cause irritation and breakouts.
Instead of Vaseline, apply a gentle overnight moisturizing cream with hyaluronic acid that will nourish and hydrate your skin while you sleep without the risk of a breakout.

Longstreet Living
Y O U R L I F E S T Y L E S T A R T S H E R E ! ”
Written by Melissa McCance
Anyone who’s done a major remodeling or redecorating project knows how hectic it can be working with all the retailers who are providing the different components of the job: flooring, cabinetry, countertops, window treatments, and so forth. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get all these things at one place? Well, you can—just visit Longstreet Living in Coldwater!
Cindy Longstreet and her staff love helping customers realize the visions they have for their homes whether it’s flooring for one room or a major upgrade throughout the house. Longstreet Living offers an extensive range of decorating choices. You can browse the huge showroom for ideas and have any questions answered quickly and knowledgeably by the team.
If flooring is what you need, you can choose from hardwood, tile, carpet, and luxury vinyl plank. Longstreet Living keeps a large inventory on hand and also accommodates special orders. If you want area rugs, you’ll find a great selection right there. “We can also order the area rugs in a number of sizes if we don’t have what you want in stock,” says Cindy. “Many of them are now available in everything from runners up to 9’ by 12’.”
New cabinets can transform a kitchen or bath, and Longstreet has both custom or in-stock cabinetry. The store carries Legacy cabinets which not only give you wood species, stain, and door style choices but another great way to personalize your cabinets as explained by Ashley Longstreet. “If someone wants painted cabinets, they can have them painted in any SherwinWilliams color.” With painted cabinetry remaining very popular, this is a way to create a look that’s truly your own.
Base cabinets and bathroom vanities need countertops, and Longstreet Living comes through here, too, with a line of quartz countertops. Solid quartz counters have surpassed granite in demand because there are many color and pattern options, and, unlike granite, quartz is low maintenance and doesn’t require periodic resealing.
An important aspect of a well-decorated room are attractive window treatments. Not only do they add an aesthetic element, but window treatments can help prevent the sun from fading your furniture and flooring. Longstreet Living is a HunterDouglas dealer, a highly-respected brand that goes back over 100 years. The range of styles, colors, materials, and other options for blinds and shades is nothing short of amazing.
And, once your space is ready, return to Longstreet for furniture! Whether you need something for any or every room in your home or you’re setting up an outdoor living area, chances are you’ll find something that suits your style. While there are many pieces in stock for immediate purchase, you can custom order if you don’t see quite what you want. The store also has mattresses, mattress covers, sheets, and pillows.
Longstreet carries the Polywood line of outdoor furniture which includes a wide variety of different pieces in many colors. “The quality of this furniture is great,” says Cindy. “If you invest in Polywood, you won’t have to replace it for a long, long time!” Longstreet carries another popular item for outdoor areas: gas-burning firepits. Cindy shared that the store has a large lake house collection of wonderful items that includes lake signs for all area lakes. “If there’s one we don’t have, we can get it!”
Longstreet Living is located at 720 E. Chicago Road in Coldwater. Store hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Saturday, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. You can reach them by phone at 517-278-4487 or through the contact link on the website: longstreetlivingcoldwater.com.

Sleep Apnea and Your Heart
Sleep apnea is a condition where a person’s breathing repeatedly starts and stops during sleep. Not all patients who snore have sleep apnea, but many who have sleep apnea do snore regularly. One in five adults suffers from at least mild sleep apnea; it afflicts more men than women.
The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea in which weight on the upper chest and neck contributes to blocking the flow of air. A less-common type, central sleep apnea, occurs when the brain fails to send signals to the diaphragm to contract and expand.
In patients with sleep apnea, it can become more difficult to keep the upper airway open during sleep. In obstructive sleep apnea, this is due to weight overpowering the muscles that hold it open. Each time the airway closes during sleep, there is a pause in breathing; it can happen five to 30 times an hour or more, causing the sleeper to wake up suddenly, gasping for air.
Loud snoring and suddenly stopping breathing or gasping for air during sleep could be one sign of sleep apnea. Other symptoms of sleep apnea include dry mouth, morning headaches, difficulty sleeping, or excessive sleepiness.
To evaluate for sleep apnea, you may need a sleep specialist to conduct testing. These tests may include overnight monitoring of your breathing. Using a test called polysomnography, your doctor can monitor your heart, lung, and brain activity and other movements while you sleep. This study helps rule out other sleep disorders such as restless legs syndrome or narcolepsy.
When the airflow stops, the body releases stress hormones, which over time can lead to heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Examples of heart disease include stroke and high blood pressure. It also can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, liver problems, and metabolic syndromes.
For moderate to severe cases, your doctor may recommend devices or even surgery to help open the airway. Common therapies include continuous positive airway pressure, in which a machine delivers constant air pressure through a mask into the nose or mouth; these are designed to keep a person’s throat open. In mild cases of sleep apnea, your provider may suggest lifestyle changes, such as regular physical activity, limiting alcohol, avoiding caffeine, and developing a sleep hygiene routine.

Ask the Doctor:
Allergies or Asthma?
The arrival of spring and summer is typically welcomed with open arms. Warm air, green grass, colorful flowers, and, of course, vacations are just a few of the many reasons to celebrate spring and summer.
Spring and summer also marks the return of allergy season. For many people, allergies are a minor seasonal nuisance that are overcome by taking over-the-counter medications or staying indoors on days when allergen levels are especially high. But it is important to note that a history of allergies is a known risk factor for developing asthma. In fact, among people diagnosed with allergies, 63 percent also reported having asthma.
What is asthma?
Asthma is a chronic condition that affects airways in the lungs. The airways carry air in and out of the lungs, and when people have asthma, these airways can become inflamed and narrow, compromising a person’s ability to breathe.
Who gets asthma?
Many asthma patients are diagnosed during childhood and most children with asthma exhibit symptoms prior to their fifth birthdays. Asthma symptoms also may appear in adults older than 20, and such instances may be attributed to adult-onset asthma. Certain adults may be more likely to get adult-onset asthma than others. For example, WebMD reports that women who are experiencing hormonal changes, such as those who are pregnant or in menopause, may be more likely to get adult-onset asthma.
What are the symptoms of asthma?
It’s important to note that it can be hard to recognize symptoms of asthma in very young children. That’s because the bronchial tubes in infants, toddlers and preschool-aged youngsters are already small and narrow. Head colds, chest colds and other illnesses may further narrow these airways. So symptoms of asthma could be mistakenly associated with colds or other illnesses. A nagging cough that lingers for days or weeks or sudden, scary breathing emergencies are two symptoms of pediatric asthma. Parents also can be on the lookout for these symptoms:
· Coughing, especially at night
· A wheezing or whistling sound when breathing, especially when exhaling
· Trouble breathing or fast breathing that causes the skin around the ribs or neck to pull in tightly
· Frequent colds that settle in the chest
Like pediatric asthma, adult-onset asthma can be easy to miss. That’s because of natural changes in muscles and a stiffening of chest walls, both of which are associated with aging and therefore often attributed to age. The symptoms of adult-onset asthma are similar to those of pediatric asthma, and adults who suspect they might be experiencing asthma symptoms despite no history of the condition can ask doctors to conduct some specific tests designed to detect asthma. A lung function test and a methacholine challenge test are two ways doctors can detect adult-onset asthma.
Allergy season has arrived, and that could make some people more vulnerable to asthma. Ask your doctor if you or your loved one are experiencing asthma symptoms.

WEIGHTLIFTING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
Strength training is a vital component of an effective exercise regimen. Guidelines from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recommend adults include moderate- to high-intensity strength training activities in their workout regimens at least twice per week.
Individuals with little weightlifting experience may not recognize the value of strength training which is often associated with building as much muscle as possible Though strength training helps build muscle, it’s also a great way to burn fat. Muscle increases resting metabolic rate which means individuals who engage in strength training will burn more fat during rest than they would if they did not include such exercise in their workout regimens Stronger muscles also provide more support to bones and connective tissues, which reduces injury risk. That’s an especially important benefit for aging men and women
As valuable as strength training is, it’s imperative that individuals approach weightlifting and other strength-building exercises with a measure of caution. Improper form or going too hard too soon can increase injury risk. Beginners can heed these tips as they acclimate to strength training
· Work with a personal trainer. Proper form is imperative to avoiding injury while strength training, and personal trainers can guide individuals through an assortment of exercises to make sure they’re performing them correctly. If a long-term commitment to a personal trainer is beyond your financial means, find a trainer with limited commitment packages or one who lets clients pay on a session-by-session basis
· Begin with light weight. Beginners should avoid reaching for the heaviest dumbbells on the rack. Mastering form is vital at the beginning stages of a new strength training program, so go for lighter weights and gradually add weight as your body acclimates. If you find yourself completing a set without much effort, you can add a little more weight But start with light weight and build from there.
· Warm up with some light cardio prior to lifting any weight. Fitness experts note that some light warmup prior to a strength training workout increases range of motion, decreases injury risk and contributes to more permanent change in muscles. Keep warmup sessions to between five and 10 minutes, opting for anything from a low-intensity jog on a treadmill or session on an elliptical
· Recognize the need for recovery. Rest and recovery are vital for any athlete, and that includes strength training beginners who are not yet lifting a lot of weight Rest helps to build lean muscle tissue and prevents injuries. When planning a strength training regimen, ensure muscles get adequate rest by never working out the same muscle groups on consecutive days.
Strength training beginners should take things slowly and gradually change their routines as their bodies become more acclimated to exercises designed to make them stronger.

Life is the Berries Self Exam
Is anyone perfect? NOPE!
Let’s not be complacent in examining ourselves and our characters. There’s room to improve. Especially me. I talk too much. Miss Talk Dominator. Why do I value my words over yours? I experienced a pivot point.
At a group meeting, I answered questions, shared illustrations, and talked more than most. I perceived this gathering as productive, sharing my insights often. Afterwards, my pastor took me aside, asking me about the balance of conversations.
My face burned red.
I glanced right and left, hoping no one else could hear. His mouth moved in slow motion. My mind spun 100 mph. He confronted me on my dominating the discussion. I shifted my feet, bit my lip, and my eye twitched.
Awkward.
I couldn’t swallow. No one ever challenged me on this. With a soft tone, he peeled back my eyes to see where I was not allowing others to participate. He spoke the truth. I lowered my head, scurrying out of the church. With my mind spinning, I replayed the meeting where I was supposedly domineering. My kind accuser was
accurate. I recalled seeing an eye roll, hearing a sigh, and noticing people glancing at each other. I had a choice to receive his input and change . . . or reject it defensively with excuses.
“I thought about my ways and turned myself back to your decrees,” (Psalm 119:59 CSB).
Recalling this moment from years ago, I blow air out of my cheeks. I recognized the error of my ways back then and still battle controlling my talkative tongue today. But the key—I recognize my sin. I work at my respect and regard for others. Nobody wants a Miss Blabbermouth. We are to become more like Jesus daily. I address my sin issue, because it hurts my testimony of Jesus.
A man told me he avoided his church Bible study because one woman monopolized the discussion. Others cannot get a word in edgewise. People stopped going. This motivates me to work on myself, control my tongue, and listen to others. I don’t want to deter others. Self-examination can lead to a healthier balance.
“…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith . . .” (Hebrew 12:1-3 NIV).

Book and Author Reviews
I just read a good book by best-selling author Emily Giffin entitled Meant to Be. It is the story of Joe and Cate and how they met and got together. The chapters shift back and forth from Joe to Cate and is written in the first person in both cases. It was an interesting style, and I enjoyed it. The reader is introduced to each character in adolescence, continuing through the teen years, and then into adulthood. In that way, the reader is able to understand their relationship with each other and how it blossomed. As you get further into their stories, all of the ups and downs will resonate with you.
On a recent trip to the library, I perused the best sellers on the list at the front desk. To my surprise I discovered four books by the same author! The author is Colleen Hoover. She is the latest phenomenon to arise from the infamous TikTok. After being turned down several times by well-known publishers, she took her “show on the road,” so to speak, and introduced her books to TikTok readers. Much to her surprise, she became an overnight success!
I read the four on the best seller list. Her topics run from a ghost story, to domestic violence, drug abuse, homelessness, poverty and a psychological thriller. All are romances, and the ones I read contained very explicit sex scenes. If you have teenagers who enjoy reading, I don’t recommend this author. Hoover started out as a writer of young adult fiction, but has graduated well beyond that audience.
Author Diane Chamberlain is always a good choice. She’s written many books over the years. Her latest, The Last House on the Street, goes back and forth from 1965 and the Voting Rights
Act to 2010, recognizing that racial tensions have settled down some. 1965 goes back to our heroine Ellie from North Carolina and the year she became committed to the civil rights movement. She falls in love with a black man she met on the circuit after MLK was assassinated. Her family’s reaction was typical for that time in the south. Then we skip forward to 2010 in the same southern neighborhood, and newcomer Kayla has purchased property to build there. Someone is trying to prohibit the sale and she wonders why. No spoilers here!
When Queen Elizabeth died last year, there were several television programs about her life. In every clip she is attired in a lovely outfit with matching dress, shoes, purse, and hat. I began to wonder who in the world could come up with the thousands of ensembles she wore throughout her reign! After a bit of researching on Google, I found my answer, and her name is Angela Kelly. She was born in 1957 in Liverpool, and is a British fashion designer, dressmaker, and milliner. She served as Personal Assistant and Senior Dresser to the Queen.
Angela is the author of The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe. The lavishly designed book was endorsed by the queen and contains never-before-seen photos of her wardrobe and jewels. It also features intimate anecdotes from Angela’s 25-year career working with Her Majesty. It is 491 pages and a bit expensive, but then, it is keepsake!

Over The EDG E
Have you ever had a really good thing going in your life and then it all went south? I recently had to give up my housekeeper and that was enough to put me right over the edge.
When we retired and moved to Florida, I decided I was going to live the easy life. Not only was I going to do what I wanted, when I wanted, I was no longer going to do the things I didn’t want to do. House cleaning is at the top of my “Don’t Want to Do It and You Can’t Make Me Do It” list. Thus, I decided I needed to hire a housecleaner. I envisioned an experienced woman who loved cleaning houses just for the fun of it. That’s not what I got. When “Clara” interviewed I thought she was the sweetest little thing in the world. She talked about how she loved a clean, fresh-smelling house and all the things she would do to keep my house in that condition. She sounded perfect so I hired her on the spot. That was a mistake!
The first week Clara showed up on time with all her cleaning products and equipment. I was a happy girl. I decided I would stay out of her way so she could concentrate on what she was doing and I went shopping. When I came home, Clara was gone, but she’d left a note saying if the job wasn’t up to my standards I should call her immediately. My standards aren’t that high and everything looked good so there was no need to call her.
Things were great at first but then went downhill. It started with little things, such as one of the bathrooms hadn’t been properly cleaned. When I called, Clara said she’d run out of toilet bowl cleaner but would be sure it was cleaned “real good” next week. Next week came and the toilet
was clean, but the floors hadn’t been vacuumed. Once again there was an excuse when I called. The vacuum cleaner died, but she’d ordered a new one and it was expected to arrive before my next cleaning. Hmm, things just weren’t going as planned, yet it wasn’t bad enough to let sweet Clara go, at least not yet.
In the next few weeks, however, the cleaning became almost non-existent and, to top it off, I often found cookie crumbs on the living room couch. I haven’t had cookies in weeks, so I wondered if Clara was eating cookies while watching TV instead of cleaning. The last straw was when I came home a little later than usual and Clara’s car was still in the driveway. I thought she might be taking more time to make up for the poor job she’d been doing the last several weeks. Nope, that wasn’t it.
When I walked through the door I found the vacuum running, but still standing upright in place. The kitchen was a disaster and the TV was blasting in the living room. When I walked in there, I found a snoring Clara asleep on the couch with a cookie hanging from her mouth. She was drunk! The empty whiskey bottle lay next to her on the couch. It took me an hour to sober her up and send her away.
How could something so good turn so bad so quickly? I don’t want to have to do my own cleaning! I would end up drunk on the couch with a cookie in my mouth just like Clara. This experience was enough to put me right over the edge.

S&H Green Stamps were distributed as early as 1896 but were most popular from the 1930s to the 1970s. Customers received S&H Green Stamps from cashiers at supermarkets, gas stations, and other retailers. They would be collected in books and redeemed for merchandise from the local S&H Idea Book Catalog which included toys, housewares, watches, personal care, and grilling and camping equipment. There were also local GS (Green Stamp) stores to redeem stamp booklets for merchandise, and there was a similar program called Top Value Stamps.
Recently, I attended an estate sale (no big news there as I regularly attend estate sales) and at the top of the stairs I found a Martha Washington sewing stand. It was a nice little stand and I have resold a number of these little beauties. Three of the drawers held typical sewing odds and ends: wood spools of thread, needles, buttons, and the like. However, the two flip end cubbies held the true treasure—books and books full of S&H Green Stamps and Top Value Stamps. If that wasn’t enough, there was also a 1979 S&H Idea Book Catalog in like-new condition! The people running the sale assured me that yes, the sewing stand came with all of the contents. And those contents brought back a wonderful childhood memory.
One of the fun things we did when visiting grandma was pasting S&H Green Stamps and Top Value Stamps in the special redemption booklets. Grandma would collect the stamps following her grocery and gasoline purchases and put them in a paper grocery bag in her pantry closet. My sister Sue and I would dump the bag of stamps out on the kitchen table, open the redemption booklets and wait for grandma to provide us each with a dampened sponge to wet and stick the stamps in the booklets. I’m sure snacks were part of the process and a fun time was had by all. Later the three of us would sit side-by-side on the couch leafing through the Idea Catalog and check out what our labors could bear in gifts.
By the 1960s, collecting stamps was so popular that S&H claimed it issued three times more stamps than the US Post Office, and its reward catalog was the largest publication in the country. During the 1970s, the recession impacted the Green Stamps and their distribution slowly declined. However, you can still receive Green Points in lieu of the Stamps at the company’s website www.greenpoints.com which was launched in 2000. So much less fun than wetting and sticking stamps into the booklets, eating snacks, and laughing together at grandma’s kitchen table.
Keeping it in Stitches, or in this case Stamps. Lick’ em and Stick ‘em!
And, hopefully, Good Friend

may have four seasons ... but you should always be comfortable at home.
I would like to take a moment to mention my experience with advertising in Simply Hers Magazine. Everywhere I go, I see this magazine because of the diligence of the people who work for Simply Hers to make sure there are copies just about everywhere. I did a couple of small ads with, surprisingly enough, a lot of success. So I decided to do a year commitment and put something in the magazine every month. Every week, someone came in and said something like, "I came in because I saw your name in Simply Hers Magazine," or, “I saw your ad in Simply Hers Magazine,” or, “I saw your article.”
It is always amazing to me, having tried di erent avenues of advertising over my last 35 years in business, when an advertising platform actually gives a great return on investment. I would recommend Simply Hers Magazine to anyone and remind everyone that advertising with Simply Hers Magazine will be well worth the time and e ort to send something to put in each issue! Not to mention how helpful they are with practically building the ad from start to nish for you with the information you send them. Give Simply Hers Magazine a try. Read it and advertise in it—you won't regret it!

Sara Cares, owner of Memories on the Hill, says that the building has been in the planning stages for years. The emerging popularity of barn weddings and more rustic venues for events made this seem a natural choice. They broke ground for the building in summer of 2022 and Sara says it will be ready early in October.
The attractive building offers 5,000 square feet of space and features dressing rooms for the bride and groom, kitchen, full bar area with a kegerator, and is completely handicap accessible. Tables and chairs are provided with seating up to 250. If you book Memories on the Hill for your wedding, the price gives you access to the building from noon on Friday through 10 a.m. Sunday—plenty of time to decorate, set up, and then clear away the next day.
Some areas outside are suitable for holding the wedding ceremony, and the venue will provide the chairs. The property is located on 10 acres bordering the Kalamazoo River and there is a beautiful, scenic bridge that offers wonderful photo opportunities or a special setting for a ceremony.
Besides weddings, the venue is suitable for just about anything where people need a comfortable, attractive, well-appointed place to gather. This includes open houses, retirement parties, bridal and baby showers, anniversary celebrations, organizational meetings, proms, and more. Events booked for Sundays will have the venue from noon until 8 p.m.
If you’re interested in finding out more about Memories on the Hill, you can contact Sara through the venue Facebook page.

LAWN CARE
By Melissa McCance
READY TO HELP!
With a background in corporate transportation, Wally learned a disciplined, organized approach to work that has helped him structure his lawn care business. He knows how to assess what needs to be done and schedule the work so it gets done.
Looking to grow the business, Wally began advertising on Facebook which, along with word of mouth and the evidence of his careful work, has opened new avenues for him. He’s ready and eager to take on new clients and is hoping to have 100 on his work list in 2023.
“I’m looking to set a standard for lawn care in this area,” explains Wally. “I have up-to-date equipment that is well-maintained and provides a high quality cut, and equipment will be replaced regularly as needed. I’m planning to take on some employees, and when my crew arrives at your home or business, they’ll be in some type of uniform—shirts with our logo, for example—and they’ll be ready to work. I’ll expect my people to be courteous and respectful, and our goal is to take care of your property as though it was ours. We aren’t satisfied until your yard is perfect.”
When it comes to the curb appeal of your home, a wellmaintained lawn is a huge plus. For many people, the time needed for regular mowing, trimming, fertilizing, pruning shrubs and the rest of it can present a real problem. If you’ve been thinking about turning any or all of these chores over to someone else, Wally Woodruff—owner of Woodruff & Sons Lawn Care—would love to show you what he and his crew can do!
Wally’s lawn care business evolved from mowing two local yards (his and his grandmother’s) to taking on eight clients by season’s end in 2021. As more people asked if he’d do their yards, Wally saw potential for making it a business. He purchased a zero-turn mower to increase his efficiency, and, thanks to the quality of his work, he had 21 clients by the start of the 2022 season and 52 by its end!
One service that has been very popular is spring and fall clean up. He can take care of clearing away the winter debris and get your yard ready for spring as well as deal with the leaves in fall. As anyone with a lot of mature trees knows, coping with those leaves can be a long, backbreaking job—why not let Wally handle it for you?
In addition to mowing and clean ups, Woodruff & Sons Lawn Care will prune shrubs, do ground level tree trimming, apply fertilizer and mulch, do edging, handle landscaping, and, in winter months, plow snow and apply salt.
If you have questions or would like to have Wally provide you with a free estimate, you can contact him by messaging through the Facebook page, calling 517-227-1843, or by emailing him at wwoodruff66@yahoo.com. Woodruff & Sons Lawn Care is fully licensed and insured.

BIG IMPACT
COUNTERTOPS: A complete kitchen overhaul may stretch some homeowners’ budgets. However, changing an older countertop for a new material can provide the facelift a kitchen needs. And while changing the cabinets may be homeowners’ ultimate goal, swapping hardware in dated finishes for newer handles and pulls can provide low-cost appeal.
PAINT: Painting a space is an inexpensive improvement that adds maximum impact. Paint can transform dark and drab rooms into bright and airy oases. Paint also can be used to create an accent wall or cozy nooks. Homeowners can showcase their personalities with their choice of paint colors.
LIGHTING: Homeowners should not underestimate what a change in lighting can do. When rooms or exterior spaces are illuminated, they take on entirely new looks. It’s worth it to invest in new lighting, whether it’s a dramatic hanging light over the dining room table or task lighting in dim spaces.
WEATHERPROOFING: Improving windows, doors, weatherstripping, and insulation in a home can offer visual appeal and help homeowners save money. The initial investment may be significant, but those costs will pay off in energy savings. According to the experts, space heating is the largest energy expense the average American homeowner has, accounting for around 45 percent of all energy costs.
MUDROOM: Turn an entryway into a more functional space with the addition of cabinets, benches or custom-designed storage options that perfectly fit the area. Cubbies and cabinets can corral shoes, umbrellas, hats, bags, and much more.
ACCENT UPDATES: Any space, whether it’s inside or outside a home, can get a fresh look with new decorative accents. Invest in new throw pillows for living room sofas. Use new tile or paint the brick on a fireplace in a den. Change the cushions on deck furniture and buy colorcoordinated planters.

Spring is a time of year when change is in the air. Trees are budding, plants are flowering, and homes laden with dark or heavy fabrics and clutter could use some lightening up.
Spring cleaning projects are popular this time of year as residents take inventory of their living spaces and aim to declutter, clean and increase efficiency. Some people find the prospect of getting organized overwhelming. Here are some tips that can help anyone master spring cleaning.
· Create a plan. Make a checklist and establish a cleaning plan of attack. Focus on areas that are not regularly cleaned, as they probably need a little attention.
· Assemble your cleaning kit. Spring cleaning can be slowed down considerably if you don’t have all of your equipment at the ready. Items to have on hand include an all-purpose cleaner, concentrated cleaner, microfiber cloths, paper towels, mop, vacuum, dusters, and a squeegee. Adjust your equipment based on the task at hand.
· Curate your cleaning playlist. Create a playlist with songs that will get you moving and motivated to clean.
Spring Cleaning Spring Cleaning
· Work from top to bottom. Work efficiently by cleaning shelves, ceiling fans and other elevated items first, as dust and debris will trickle down and need to be cleaned next.
· Purchase or rent a carpet cleaner. According to the experts at Clean That Up, carpets help filter indoor air by trapping debris and allergens. By deep cleaning carpets, homeowners can improve the indoor air quality of their homes. Use a carpet cleaner on a warm, dry day so that windows can be opened and cross breezes will help dry the damp rug.
· Clean windows. Wash windows inside and out and utilize their screens to help brighten indoors spaces.
· Deep clean the kitchen. Clean out and disinfect the refrigerator by wiping it down with warm water and baking soda or a vinegar-and-water solution. While in the kitchen, set the oven to the self-clean function so it becomes cleaner as well.
Homeowners also can focus on cleaning curtains (including shower curtains), steam-cleaning upholstery, removing clutter from closets, cleaning out the dryer vent and duct tubing, wiping inside kitchen drawers, and vacuuming under beds and other furniture.
Spring cleaning can bring the revitalizing nature of this beloved time of year into your home

ADOPTION GIVES DOGS A NEW “ LEASH” ON LIFE
“Adopt don’t shop” is a mantra utilized by many organizations devoted to finding loving homes for shelter animals. With thousands of dogs, cats, and other companion animals residing in shelters or being fostered until they can find their forever homes, rescue organizations urge the pet-loving public to adopt rather than purchase dogs from private breeders.
Individuals who choose to adopt a dog from a private rescue, humane society, animal shelter, or another welfare group would be wise to follow some guidelines that can help individuals and families find the best matches with their new pets.
“It’s important to be honest with the rescue group regarding, not only what you’re looking for in a dog, such as disposition, energy level, age, and size, but to describe the overall household dynamic,” advises Toni Diamond, founder of Diamond Dogs Rescue, Inc. (www. diamonddogsrescueinc.com), a fosterbased rescue with resources in New Jersey and Massachusetts. “This way the rescue can match your needs with the dogs they have available to ensure the best opportunity the placed pet will remain in your home.”
Here are some other tips to consider if you’re thinking of adopting a pet.
· Think about fostering first. If you’re on the fence about whether to take in a dog right now, fostering offers a way to gauge how life can change with a dog in the household. Fostering a dog can free up resources and enable rescues to help other dogs. Many “foster fails” are dogs that foster families adopted themselves because they couldn’t bear to give up the dogs.
· Expect to be vetted. Rescue groups generally do some type of adopter check which includes an application questionnaire and may want to visit your home to be sure that it is safe and comfortable for the dog. Expect an adoption fee, as this helps defray the cost of sheltering animals.
· Don’t feel limited by geography. Rescues handle dogs from across the country. Some may even be willing to facilitate travel from one area to another. If you see a dog online that seems to be a perfect fit but is a good distance away, contact the rescue to see what can be done.
· Be patient and open-minded. Rescued animals often have been jostled around a bit, moving from place to place. Expect a transition period for the shell-shocked animal to settle down before judging his or her true personality. It’s possible for rescued dogs to have accidents in a home, act out, or be hesitant around people while they learn to trust their new owners.
Adopting a dog can be a great way to add to the family and provide a loving animal with new beginnings.

Recreation Passport Fee
At just over a dollar per month, the value-packed Recreation Passport is still the best recreation deal around
Next month, you’ll see a slight increase in the cost of a Recreation Passport. The moderate fee change is a result of a statutory provision that ensures Recreation Passport funding keeps pace with the economy. March 1, the resident Recreation Passport fee will increase from $12 to $13 for vehicles, $6 to $7 for motorcycles and $24 to $26 for twoyear vehicle registrations. There’s a $5 convenience fee (except for Belle Isle Park) when not purchased at the time of your license plate registration renewal through the Secretary of State.
Approximately 97% of state parks funding is generated by user fees (including the Recreation Passport) and royalty revenues; just 3% comes from Michigan’s General Fund tax dollars.

Flower
Beds
Flower beds can completely transform an outdoor space when used correctly. Putting careful thought into how your flower beds will be organized and arranged in addition to what you want to plant in them can make a huge impact on your landscape and curb appeal.
79
An inviting backyard can serve as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life After a long day at the office or an exhausting day spent transporting kids to and fro, it’s hard to resist the allure of a peaceful outdoor space in which to unwind.
Privacy is a key component of any backyard oasis. Some homes may be so remote that privacy isn’t an issue But many suburban homeowners recognize they might need to tweak their landscapes if they hope to create a private oasis outside
Fencing or planting?
Most homeowners looking to create more privacy on their property will have to choose between fencing and planting. Fencing provides immediate privacy because, once it’s installed, no one can see into the yard. Fencing also doesn’t require watering or other immediate upkeep, which will be necessary when planting to ensure tree roots can establish themselves.
But planting has its benefits as well. Planting for privacy is essentially creating a living fence that can grow over time and provide even more privacy as trees reach maturity. Plants also tend to be less costly than fencing. The home renovation experts at BobVila.com estimate that fencing projects typically cost between $1,667 and $4,075 However, fencing projects can cost considerably more than $4,000, especially for homeowners with large properties they want to enclose Large, mature trees can be expensive, though it’s unlikely they will cost as much as fencing In addition, fencing requires more maintenance and will potentially need to be replaced, while native trees won’t require much upkeep and can last for generations.
Planting
Homeowners who choose to plant for privacy will next have to decide which type of plants to add to their properties. Evergreens provide year-round privacy because they don’t shed their leaves, so these are the ones most often chosen when creating a living fence. A number of varieties of evergreen trees can do the job, but it’s important that homeowners consult with a landscape architect prior to choosing trees so they can ensure the trees will thrive when faced with the growing conditions on their properties. During such a consultation, homeowners may discuss the following popular privacy trees.
80
· Leyland cypress: The Arbor Day Foundation® notes that the Leyland cypress is popular for hedges and boundaries, likely because a typical tree reaches a mature height of 60’-70’ and can spread as wide as 25’ The Leyland cypress grows fast, which may appeal to homeowners who don’t want to wait to establish privacy
· Green Giant Arborvitae: There are different varieties of arborvitae, but the Green Giant tends to be the go-to option for privacy. The ADF indicates that Green Giants will grow up to three feet per year until they reach maturity, providing a fast-growing opportunity for privacy planters The Green Giant can spread as wide as 20 feet at maturity, which is another attribute that makes it so popular among homeowners desiring privacy
· Eastern White Pine: The ADF notes that the eastern white pine, which can reach heights up to 80’, is favored in spacious yards. That’s likely due to its height and its potential spread, which can reach 40’. Homeowners who choose the eastern white pine might like it for its resemblance to a Christmas tree, and it is widely used for that purpose. The privacy provided by the eastern white pine is significant, but it might be best suited to extensive properties
Whether it’s fencing or planting, homeowners have many options to consider as they seek to create more privacy on their properties.

Mother Nature can be harsh on a lawn, and it’s up to homeowners to nurse their lawns back to health after they endure the elements. That’s often the case when winter ends and homeowners uncover signs of damage to their lawns.
Homeowners cannot begin to repair winter lawn damage until they learn to identify it, and the following are some telltale signs that winter took a harsh toll on a landscape.
WILTED GRASS: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of de-icing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful

as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limiting applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.
BROWN PATCHES: The experts note that brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shoveled snow were deposited so homeowners should inspect alongside driveways and walkways. The NALP advises homeowners to rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, then the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, if the area beneath is not green and surrounding areas are already turning green, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread and the grass should regain
its green glory.
GRAY OR PINK GRASS: Another indicator of winter lawn damage linked to snow is gray or pink grass. The NALP reports that this is a byproduct of snow mold caused by lingering snow. Action may be unnecessary as the NALP notes these circular patterns often go away on their own. If not, raking the affected areas might be enough to get the lawn on the road to recovery. If the issue continues to linger after raking, a topsoil application and subsequent seeding may be necessary.
These are three common signs of winter lawn damage in areas where snowfall is significant during the coldest months of the year. Homeowners concerned about their damaged lawns are urged to contact a local landscape professional to correct any issues that linger into spring.

10 BEST TIPS
For Starting Seeds indoors
Starting seeds indoors is easy with the right knowledge, tools, and care. It’s a time-tested gardening approach that saves money, maximizes your yield, and extends the enjoyment of your growing season.
Study the Seeds
Different seeds and seedlings have different growing needs. Be sure you understand each plant’s requirements. Grouping plants with similar needs together will make caring for indoor seedlings easier.
Plan Seed Timing
Find out how long it takes each plant to germinate and reach an appropriate size for transplanting, then start the seeds at the right date so it is safe to transplant them when ready.
Use Biodegradable Containers
The fragile root hairs of seedlings are critical for plants to take up water and nutrients. Instead of removing tangled roots from a plastic pot, opt for eggshells, paper egg cartons or specialty compostable containers.
Label Pots
Many seedlings look alike when they are very young. Labeling the pots carefully will allow you to transplant seedlings more effectively, choosing the best garden spot for each plant.
Plant More Than Needed
Plant more than needed and take your pick of the strongest when it’s time to transfer them—you’ll have more to share with family members, friends, and neighbors.
Use Quality Dirt
Do not simply fill pots with soil from the garden, as it will likely contain insects and weeds that can stunt seedling growth. Instead, choose a seedling potting mix with good drainage and nutrition formulated to nurture seeds and young plants.
Provide Heat
Seeds need consistent warmth to germinate well. Use heat lamps, planter heating pads, or seed trays positioned in a warm spot to maintain a temperature around 70°F.
Provide Water
Soil should be moist but not waterlogged, since seeds will drown without oxygen. Cover a seed tray with plastic wrap to maintain humidity. Place young seedlings on a drip tray to take up water through the soil. Mist soil daily as needed.
Provide Light
Seedlings need 12–16 hours of sunlight each day, so use supplemental bulbs if necessary. If the light source is too far away, plants will grow too tall too quickly, developing a leggy stature with thin, weak stems. Suspend bulbs a few inches above the plants for the best results, raising the lights as the seedlings grow.
Offer Tough Love
To help seedlings grow even stronger, gently ruffle the stems a few times a day or keep a fan gently blowing nearby to provide air currents. A week or two before transplanting the seedlings outdoors, put them outside starting at just an hour and work up to leaving them outdoors all day.
With a little planning, care, and attention, you, too, can enjoy the challenges and rewards of raising your very own plants from seeds.

OASIS Building a Backyard
Warm weather means more time to relax outdoors. For those homeowners lucky enough to have entertaining spaces outside, spring and summer provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air under the sun or stars.
Over the last few years, families have become especially familiar with what works about their yards and where there is room for improvement. Pandemic-related travel restrictions and early stay-at-home mandates resulted in plenty of time spent in backyards on staycations. Even though many such restrictions have been lifted, homeowners may have seen the benefits of having functional respites right outside their doors.
A backyard renovation can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. The American Society of Landscape Architects suggests homeowners budget the cost of a major landscaping project at between 5 and 10 percent of their home’s value. Large or small, here are ways to make an outdoor oasis at home.
CREATE LIVING PRIVACY
Living in close proximity to neighbors may make privacy harder to come by. Wood or vinyl fences, however effective, may not provide the all-natural look many people desire. Vertical gardening, which trains easy-care vines like English ivy, Clematis or various climbing roses to grow on trellis or fencing adds greenery and privacy. Hedges and fast-growing shrubs also can be used for natural barriers.

INSTALL A POOL
Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days. An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hang-out zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing. Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.
PROVIDE OUTDOOR ATMOSPHERE
Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with
hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging.
EXTEND THE LIVING SPACE
Decks and patios can help make outdoor entertaining areas more comfortable by eliminating the need to sit on the grass or gravel. Plus, they add another “room” to the home. When paired with weatherproof patio furniture, such as sofas, loungers and tables, a private seating area can be crafted and utilized for any number of entertaining desires.
HANG A HAMMOCK
Few things evoke feelings of relaxation better than a hammock. Fitted between two trees (or two posts if trees are sparse), a hammock is an ideal place to grab a nap or read a book.

1. Become a more careful driver. A careful approach when behind the wheel is safer than aggressive driving and beneficial for your vehicle. When starting, avoid revving the engine, which needlessly wears it down When out on the road, avoid rapid accelerations, which also contributes to needless wear and tear. Even excessive idling can adversely affect the engine, so keep winter warmups to around 30 seconds t o prevent damage to engine components
2 Know when and how to fill up. Every driver has likely visited a filling station when an oil tanker is busily filling the tanks That's traditionally been considered a less than ideal time to fill up, as the theory is that filling the tanks stirs up sediment that could then find its way into consumers' gas tanks, adversely affecting their vehicles. However, that's often dependent on the station itself and how much its owners prioritize maintenance of the tank and filtration systems. Drivers who trust their local station owners can likely fill up when the tankers are present without worry In addition, avoid topping off once the nozzle clicks when filling up The U S Environmental Protection Agency notes that topping off is harmful to the planet and the vehicle, as gasoline needs room to expand. When you top off, the extra gas may damage the vapor collection system and cause the vehicle to run less efficiently.
3. Change oil more frequently as the vehicle ages. It's true that modern vehicles no longer require oil changes for every 3,000 miles driven However, as vehicles age, drivers and their vehicles' engines may benefit from more frequent oil changes than the owner's manual necessarily recommends. Oil changes remove dirt and metal particles from the engine, potentially contributing to a longer life expectancy More frequent changes can be especially beneficial for vehicles that are routinely driven in stop-and-go traffic.

TAKING CARE OF OLDER VEHICLES
DDrivers who can’t afford to keep up with the rising cost of new vehicles can take these steps to keep their existing cars
· Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt. Engines need various components to do their job, and those components must do so at the right time for the engine to run smoothly. Fully functional timing belts help to synchronize movements, but belts must be replaced every so often. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. That’s infrequent, but drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. One issue many drivers encountered in the early months of the pandemic when people were driving less frequently was timing belts that were failing long before they reached the projected mile markers. That’s because infrequent driving can hasten the demise of the timing belt. This is something for aging drivers who no longer drive a lot to keep in mind.
· Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid
every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.
· Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they’re going to burn. So drivers of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. This also is a great way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.
· Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best not to skip recommended maintenance intervals. That’s true for drivers of all cars, but especially those whose vehicles are aging. Routine tuneups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

Service and awareness—these are the two main goals of the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence when they invite you to the 13th annual “Walk a Mile in their Shoes” on Saturday, April 29th in Coldwater.
The event, which kicks o at 8:30 am with a chip-timed 5K run/walk, is looking to raise monies for serving survivors as well as awareness and advocacy within their community. By doing this, they aim to ood their community with hope.
In previous years, they registered 400 to 500 runners and were able to raise as much as $56,000. The money, which goes into the agency’s general fund, then allows them to serve survivors and their families in ways for which they are not able to receive grant dollars. Those services range widely all the way from food to assisting with a broken-down vehicle in need of a tow and everything in between.
By partnering with Project Connect, they are able to include service agencies which will be on location all day to answer questions, hand out information, and be available for anyone who may be in need of their services.
At 10:30 am, they kick o the one-mile march against domestic and sexual violence and the Walk a Mile in their Paws dog walk. Throughout the event, there will be children’s activities, a pancake breakfast, and more. All events take place on Monroe Street which will be blocked o for the day. Parking will be available in the Southern Michigan Bank and Trust parking lot behind Broadway Grille.
To sign up to participate in the 5K or the march and dog walk, please visit 278safe.com/register. To learn more about the events of the day, please visit 278safe.com/walk-a-mile. Registration opens at 7:30 am.
