After winter, we love to see spring come, but there’s no denying that early spring in Michigan can be kind of a psycho season: rain, snow, sleet, wild winds, a hot day here and there, some bitterly cold ones, and . . . mud. But now we’re in the full bloom of spring, and everything— and everyone—is coming alive. Isn’t it great?!

Meghan Campbell Focused on compassionate, quality care. — By Melissa McCance—
There’s a well-known adage that you can’t pour from an empty pitcher. Often this is used to encourage people to take care of themselves so they can continue to give to others. But, sometimes, it’s necessary for someone to take care of the caretakers, and that’s exactly where Hillsdale Hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer Meghan Campbell keeps her focus. “I went into nursing to take care of patients, to make sure their needs were met and that their time in the hospital was as comforting and positive as it could be. In this job, I want to take care of nurses so that they are able to give the best care possible to our patients.” Meghan graduated from Morenci High School and went on to earn her associate’s degree at Northwest State Community College in Archbold, Ohio. She began work at Hillsdale Hospital in 2009 and worked in a number of departments and positions including the 10
patients’ safety as a priority and work hard to maintain standards.” When asked what she would like to see implemented once the effects of the pandemic lessen, Meghan spoke enthusiastically about establishing a structured focus for nursing education. She knows that most nurses want more growth as well as refresher education to sharpen existing knowledge and skills—things that were learned once but might not have been used for a while. Her idea is to have department-specific continuing education so the nurses in each department will be trained in the most-current methods of care and treatment.
medical/surgical floor, joint replacement, house supervisor, charge nurse in medical/surgical, CCU, infection control, clinical manager for medical/surgical and CCU, and director of inpatient services. This experience throughout the hospital has given Meghan a first-hand understanding of how the various departments function and what demands each area puts on the nurses who work there. She accepted the position of chief nursing officer in September 2021. As the chief nursing officer, Meghan oversees the inpatient units, emergency room, surgical services, obstetrics, behavioral health, the house supervisors, and the case managers. The managers in those departments report to Meghan and she collaborates with them on the day-to-day details as well as assisting with staffing issues, strategizing, and quality control. In addition, she has numerous regular meetings and assessment responsibilities as part of her duties. Meghan describes her job as challenging but rewarding and says that she feels she has grown a lot as a nurse and a leader in very short period of time.
Meghan is committed to Hillsdale Hospital and to the community, and she and her husband of 15 years live with their four children in Hudson. She is happy to be working here and speaks with pride about the staff at the hospital: “I love the people here. I know it’s a cliché, but it truly is a family. It makes it easy to come to work. All of the nurses really care about the patients and their families, about the hospital, and about the community. They’re here for the right reasons, not just to put in a shift and get a paycheck. That’s important. Time in a hospital can be a very scary thing, and skilled, caring nurses make a huge difference— they spend the most time with the patients. I feel very lucky to have the staff we do.”
“It’s a demanding position, but I like to be challenged and to keep learning. I don’t like to be stagnant,” she explains. Since assuming the post, Meghan has been working hard to meet community needs and to help bring needed medical specialties to the area. Hillsdale Hospital offers a number of specialty services that many small, rural hospitals don’t have. She feels that as chief nursing officer, she can effect change to ensure that patients get quality and compassionate care, and a big part of that is making sure that nurses have the support and training they need to do the best job they can. As for most hospitals since the coronavirus hit, staffing has been an ongoing challenge. “COVID has not been kind,” says Meghan. “It’s been difficult, but we always have our 11

Here Comes The Sun Now that we’re well into spring, it’s time to start thinking about fashion strategies and updates for summer. Here are some tips for styling the upcoming season. 13
Experiment with New Colors
Summer is a great time to break out the brights. You don’t have to go full-on as you try these new shades. Try pairing a tank in coral, yellow, Caribbean blue, or fuchsia with jeans and a neutral blazer.
White Sneakers
An eternal summer favorite, clean white kicks are as much a seasonal footwear standard as sandals. Comfortable and versatile, you can pair them with minis, sundresses, shorts, and jeans. 14
Let Those Shoulders Shine
Baring your shoulders doesn’t necessarily mean going totally off the shoulder. Strappy dresses and tops give that summer vibe and barer look just as well. You’ll keep cool and look great!
Hang Loose
Tops that have a looser, flowy design will keep you more comfortable than tight-fitting clothing. Ruffles also have a summery feel, so try this look this year.
Natural Fibers are Your Friend
Find Your Best Shorts
White Denim: Crisp, Clean, and Summery
It’s Sandal Time!
If it’s going to be a scorcher, think fabrics like cotton, rayon, and linen. These fibers have breathability that will help keep you cool when the weather isn’t.
Denim is a year-round favorite, and white denim declares that it’s summer! Try a white denim skirt or pants with a bright print top and sandals for the perfect summer look.
Shorts come in so many styles and lengths that there’s a good chance one will work for you. Take some time to try on a variety of shorts until you find the one that makes you feel good.
Some people simply can’t have enough sandals. Flip flops, slides, wedges, gladiator, sport—and the list goes on! Give your feet a summer punch by trying a cute slide in a bold color. 15
Summer Hair — DON’T CARE! 16
Messy Bun
Pageboy Cut
Low Updo
A great way to beat the heat is keeping hair off your neck. Ponytails, braids, ballerina buns, and topknots are classic summer looks. If you need help keeping your locks in place, use dry shampoo or hair powder to add grip, texture, and volume. A shorter, cropped ‘do such as a pageboy or pixie is an easier option and always looks cool. Ask your local stylist for a face-flattering cut.

LifeWays Reveals New Brand Identity with Redesigned Logo and Website LifeWays, the community mental health services program serving Jackson and Hillsdale counties, has announced the launch of its new brand identity, redesigned logo, and website. These changes come at a time when LifeWays is evolving its service offerings and expanding its reach.
The visual design showcases and celebrates those we serve, our staff, and our community, while the layout is structured to provide a seamless user experience. The site also better highlights our values, our commitment to quality, transparency, media relations, and who we are.
“In the last few years, LifeWays has successfully opened its services to more people through unique initiatives such as millage funding in both Jackson and Hillsdale counties. LifeWays has also been continually expanding its service offerings to include such things as integrated healthcare and 24/7 crisis services,” said Maribeth Leonard, CEO of LifeWays. “Our new logo, website, and brand identity better reflect our expanding services and reach.”
“While our name remains the same, our brand, logo, and website have changed significantly to better represent who we are and who we serve, as we grow our services to reach more people,” commented Chad Surque, Director of Communications at LifeWays. “Our new identity is welcoming, inclusive, and professional— words we would use to describe not only our brand but also the services we provide and the manner in which we provide them.”
Designed to represent the many paths to recovery and the diverse array of people served by LifeWays, the new logo brings forth feelings of hope and help to the community. This cleaner, simpler logo design also aims to be more easily read, understood, and recognized.
LifeWays’ new website is now live and the new logo can be seen across all LifeWays’ social media platforms. Additionally, in the coming weeks, LifeWays’ facilities will be receiving new signage and the brand will be promoted to LifeWays’ community, providers, and partners.
The newly-redesigned website, www.lifewaysmi.org, features easy navigation and simplified messaging.
LifeWays is a Community Mental Health Authority and a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) grantee. As such, we primarily serve people in Jackson and Hillsdale counties as well as any individual with serious mental health needs regardless of their residence or insurance coverage. We treat adults and children with emotional/behavioral challenges, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and substance use issues.

NUTRITION’S
Key Role In Fitness
By James Campbell NSCA Certified Personal Trainer Owner, PRIME Fitness
All right, PRIMEates, it’s time to talk about it again. Nutrition. I’ll start by saying that I’m not a nutritionist, BUT I’ve been doing this fitness thing for a very long time and I know a thing or two about a thing or two. First off, there’s no cookie cutter answer that works for everyone. Second, there is no easy way. Let me say that again, THERE IS NO EASY WAY!! That fad diet your friend group is talking about, 9 of 10 times isn’t sustainable. There is something useful in each macro (protein, carbohydrates, and fats) and to cut out any would alter energy systems or eliminate proper use of one. When it comes to working out, most think the hardest part is getting your ass up, going to the gym, and “surviving” the workout. As much as I want to say that my job is the be all, end all, I can’t. It’s what you do with the other 23 hours of the day. It’s what you put in your mouth, how you manage daily stress, and how well you sleep. We’re going to go over some nutritional intake briefly. I say briefly because I want to keep this somewhat simple. Any time I have a new client or an old one who has decided to alter goals or just get stricter on the lifestyle to achieve a desired image, the first thing I ask is if they’re tracking their calories, and, of course, they aren’t. That’s where we start, because we can’t improve on something without knowing where it stands to begin with. When we start tracking calories, I ask them to pay attention to the protein intake because this is going directly correlate with recovery time. Now is not the time to change what you’re doing completely, simply because we want to do this in the least invasive way possible. Certainly, we will be making more healthy choices because by putting it in the app you have to own it and that’s part of this process. The other piece of this is that you MUST measure
20
food. That’s the only way you’re going to know, without a doubt, what you’re getting. Usually, people tell me that they’re getting LOTS of protein. This is almost never the case, though. I start people off around 100g a day as a goal unless they’re consistently exceeding that already. (As I said, not usually the case, especially with women). Once we start hitting that number, we raise it just a bit, usually to 150g. If they’re doing great, maybe 200g. We also begin addressing carbs. This process is too much and has too many factors to get into in this article, but that’s how we BEGIN! Now, just a quick rundown on what and why ... sorta. First of all, not all calories are created equal. With that being said, that’s why I don’t really pay attention to the total calorie number. If you first get the protein number I give you and then the carb, the calories usually end up where we want them. If not, we look at fat more closely. Also, remember, it’s not a cookie cutter program. Therefore, the calorie number will probably differ a bit person to person. Believe it or not, you HAVE to EAT to LOSE!! I wouldn’t steer you wrong, I mean it’s a piece of my success after all. It comes down to one thing, and that’s how badly you want to succeed. A fact to keep in mind is that you control the outcome. You can pick up good lifestyle habits or excuses, but you can’t have both. This is not by any means the total process, just a piece to give you an idea of how I start my clients out. Some pick it up right away and others take longer; we’re all out here trying to be better than we were yesterday and that says something. Good luck!! And I’m always here if you need me. PROTECTING YOUR SKIN
By: Rachel Gier, FNP Hillsdale Medical Associates
Many times, we do not think to apply sunscreen unless its summer or we have traveled somewhere warm. The fact is, you can still have damage to your skin regardless of the temperature outside. Skin protection and care should be a priority all year round. Per the American Academy of Dermatology Association, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer sometime during their lives. While there are multiple types of skin cancer, one of the ways you can help reduce the risks is by utilizing sunscreen. Picking out sunscreen can be overwhelming as there are so many types. When picking a type of sunscreen, look for one that is broad spectrum. This will help to protect against UVA and UVB skin rays. The SPF should be 30 or greater and get water resistant if possible. When applying sunscreen, cover all areas of your body that clothing does not cover which can include ears, necks, and even tops of feet. Don’t forget your lips! You can get a lip balm with at least SPF 30. You should apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes
22
before going outside. This allows it to dry fully. Even if the sunscreen is waterproof, it is important to reapply after activities such as swimming. Follow the directions on the bottle as to when you should reapply. The usual interval is about every two hours. What should you do if you get sunburnt? First and foremost, if you are feeling sunburnt, you should find shade so you are not continuing to expose your skin to damaging rays. You can usually take over-the-counter medications to help soothe the pain. These can include pain medications to help with swelling. Make sure that you stay hydrated. You can also get creams and lotions to help with healing. If you do have areas that blister, let them heal and do not pop them. If you develop blistering, fever, etc., please seek medical attention. Recurrent sunburns can increase your risks of developing types of skin cancer. If you have moles or skin growths that concern you, please schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

TELEPHONE TRAVELING COUPLE VISITS OWOSSO By Lisa Barna
Hello, Simply Hers readers! We’re back with another adventure.
24
The dart was planted in the middle of the word Owosso, and while we live relatively close, we have never made our way to this mid-Michigan community. A quick reminder of our travel rules: 1. No Googling the town we’re going to 2. We ask for one “can’t-miss” place 3. We go to that suggestion no matter what Our barista recommended we visit the Shiawassee Arts Center. The center was filled with gorgeous art at reasonable prices. We loved how inclusive it felt and enjoyed the galleries. 5/5 Stars Next, we were sent off to Curwood Castle. It has information about James Curwood, the famous author who used the castle as his writing studio, and it also showcases all of Owosso’s most famous residents. With history, unique architecture, and a view of the Shiawassee River, this is a can’t-miss spot! 5/5 Stars We sprinted to the Steam Railroading Institute to get a tour and see the train the Polar Express was based on. That’s right! THE Polar Express! They actually flew from L.A. out to Owosso to use the 1225 train for the sound effects in the movie. We also learned about the North Pole Express which people can ride in November every year! I can’t properly explain what a hidden gem this is. We also have to give a shout-out to our tour guide, Joey, who was knowledgeable and engaging! 6/5 Stars!

Starved, we made our way to the Wrought Iron Grill. The food was good and we’d go back again but after seeing the art center, a castle, and the coolest train experience we’ve ever seen—it was a little lacking. 4/5 Stars Our waitress sent us to Aviator Jaynes, a unique home decor and gift shop. Absolutely loved everything inside and could imagine furnishing any space with the eclectic finds. 4/5 Stars We were then recommended to check out Books and Beans which opened in February! This book/coffee shop was cute but lacking in selection. While Andrew found a book, I couldn’t find anything I wanted to take home. 4/5 Stars The owner recommended we check out his favorite shop, Fable Lane Books. When we walked in, we walked straight into people playing D&D in the front. If you were into the mythical and magical you’d be in heaven! The shop was cool but needs a little updating. 3/5 Stars Overall, we give Owosso 4/5 stars. There’s so much history and awesome shops around every corner! We were a little put off by how downtown abruptly ends in two fast food chains, but besides that it was cute, walkable, and gave us lots of awesome experiences!

Life is the Berries
Dinner Dialog Delight “Excuse me. Are you my daughter’s art teacher? You changed our lives.” By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker, Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences, Caricature Artist
Stopping my grocery cart, I listen with a puzzled expression. This came from a mom shopping with her pint-sized daughter. Her child, my former student, beams up at me. My eyes widened with surprise as this mom shared the impact of my unique “homework” assignment. Evidently, two years earlier, I explained to her daughter’s kindergarten class that they could share highs and lows at the dinner table. The kindergarteners practiced waiting turns, listening with eye-contact, and telling their highlights and lowlights for the day. I suggested they do this with their families at dinner. It stuck with this cutie. The ponytailed princess relayed the assignment to her parents. Now, her family shares their good points and bad points every single dinnertime. Their communication grows. They discuss the negative issues and celebrate the positive moments. Turning off technology, they bond over dinner dialog.
26
It’s their family tradition now. Waving arms exuberantly, this mom talked fast, filling me in on the joy it brings each evening meal. Radiating with appreciation, she repeated, “It changed our lives!” She continued expounding gleefully on the impact of bonding at dinner. After thanking her for her kind encouragement, I smiled, floating down the grocery aisle. Jesus showed us the importance of breaking bread and bonding at the table. Christ gave thanks to God the Father at the table as an example for us. So, in our home, we add the custom of expressing God’s blessings. We give gratitude for God during our fellowship mealtime. Perhaps our Simply Hers readers will pull up a chair to this custom of converting their house to a heartfelt home. Pass the butter please . . . and who goes first sharing the day’s ups, downs, and gratitude for God sightings?

This is not about rescue, so as to feel good when the child lights up with a smile. This is not about the comfort of compassion. This is hard work, struggling with ripped families and children in clouds of pain, anger dancing around in their hearts in the turmoil of a world made crazy. This is caring, yes, but also what is just, what should be demanded. It takes love and a certain measure of courage. TURN THE PAGE Book and Author Reviews
By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers Magazine
In keeping with this month’s issue highlighting home improvements, I have two book suggestions on the subject. The first is the 8th updated edition of Ultimate Guide Wiring from Creative Homeowner. This all-inclusive book contains ten chapters including Wiring Methods, Appliances and Equipment, Outdoor Wiring, Emergency Power Equipment, Understanding Electricity, Tools and Their Uses, and Materials and Equipment. If you are lucky enough to have a handyman husband around, this book will be appreciated. My handyman husband keeps it nearby, and it assists him in all of our various home improvement projects, both inside and out! Good Housekeeping says it has the ultimate handbook to help you get everything done faster and easier. Good Housekeeping Home Skills includes 850 pro-tested tricks to save time and money and add fun and flair to your home. These tips include Prep & Cook, Clean & Organize, Decorate & Renovate, Maintain & Repair, Enjoy the Outdoors, and Entertain & Celebrate. You can’t go wrong! I received a book recommendation in an email from LaDonna, a fellow reader of Simply Hers. She works in a library in our four-county area, and I’m always interested in a librarian’s suggestions. She says her favorite book is always the one she’s currently reading! This particular favorite book is entitled The Reading List and it is the debut book by author Sara Nisha Adams. Reviewers endorse it as the most heartfelt read of the summer. Mukesh is a widower, living a quiet life in a London suburb. He has recently lost his beloved wife and is lonely. His granddaughter is a bookworm who never looks up, working in a library. She discovers a list of novels she’s never heard of and shares it with her grandfather,
30
hoping the shared list of books will create a connection between them. Among other things, the story examines how reading gets us through our most difficult moments. This one is going to the top of my reading list! Fellow reader Betty suggested one her book club read recently. The Only Woman In the Room by Marie Benedict is set in pre-WWII Austria. Hedwig Kiesler is a daughter in a Jewish family. She is known for her beauty and talent and has begun a career as a stage actress. In the novel, her beauty saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. This is a fictionalized account of legendary actress Hedy Lamarr. In addition to her beauty and talent as an actress, she also happened to be very intelligent and went on to invent a torpedo guidance system and also the basis for all modern wireless communications!! This book is certainly one to pick up and read. Not just another pretty face. Husband Marty just read a book he really enjoyed, so I asked him to report on it: “Agent Jack is a 2018 release, written by Robert Hutton. Set in Great Britain during the war years, it is the 100% true story of Eric Roberts. This unassuming bank clerk [AKA Jack King] was a master spy for Britain’s famed MI5 ... you remember, James Bond and all that. I read every page wondering what’s next.” Marty said when he reads a book he mentally pictures the characters and setting as he goes. And in his head the pictures are all in black and white and the people looked like Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner. Fun. What are you reading? Email me at nancyryan47@gmail.com. See you at the library!

Do you love your home? Do you love your decorating style? I like to think I have a real sense of design and style. I mean, I spend a lot of time watching HGTV’s design shows so how could I not have picked up a thing or two? My husband disagrees with my self-assessment and we’re gonna need a second opinion so this doesn’t put me over the edge. I love the new fashionable word eclectic. The dictionary says eclectic means “deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources” and that’s what I’ve done with our house. We have every imaginable range of style in this house from a bold, blue, old-style end table to a green, boho, three-drawer chest. We have orange, green, and brown chairs that look like someone puked up squares on them and the floral and striped pillows on the brown couch to complement those ugly but comfy chairs. Even if the patterns don’t match, at least the colors do. We go to a lot of yard sales and I generally find anything and everything I might need/want. What my husband doesn’t realize is that I’m saving him a ton of money! I love to change the furniture almost as often as I change my underwear, so if I buy stuff at a yard sale for a fraction of the cost, he should be happy, right? I would hope so, but that’s not the case. Each time I decide to buy a new-tome table or chair I get the speech. Probably every woman in the universe has heard some version of the speech. “We don’t need it” … “We don’t have a place for it” …”It won’t go with the other furniture,” blah, blah, blah, as though he cares about
34
matching furniture! Any of those statements sound familiar to you? I thought so. HGTV has tons of shows on how to refurbish old stuff, although I’ve never actually personally refurbished anything; it looks like a lot of work! I usually get the object home and decide it doesn’t look bad enough for me to work up a sweat so I’ll throw a table cloth over it or stick it in a dark corner where no one will notice. Is that the lazy man’s way to do things? You bet, and I’m okay with that. No reason for me to get down and dirty if it’s not absolutely necessary, right? The one room my husband won’t let me touch is the room where he watches tv. That’s his man cave and he wants it like he wants it. Can you believe that!? The man has no sense of style so what makes him think he can decide what looks good? I’m telling you, if we were to have a contest, I would win hands down. So how ‘bout it, folks? Who’s in to be a judge? There will be no whining and no crying. My husband isn’t much of a whiner, and while I’ve been known to whine somewhat, I promise to keep it under control although I prefer you don’t hold me to that! So, for now, I’ll wait for someone to show up that feels they can be honest, fair, and utterly unbiased. When you come, please disregard that big hole in the backyard that appears to have my husband’s body in it. All will be well as long as you remember I’m the master designer here and it’s best if you work with me and do not put me over the edge!

Living in Harmony
With Your Surroundings Written by 5 Healthy Towns Foundation staff
The art of Feng Shui, which literally means wind and water, is an established Chinese tradition which has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, millions of people follow the principles of Feng Shui to bring nature and harmony into their surroundings. The goal of Feng Shui is to invite positive energy into your personal space so that your life feels more balanced and energized. Feng Shui can have a positive impact on health, prosperity, and wellbeing. In Feng Shui, there are five important elements used to adjust the energy of a space. Each element signifies a unique type of energy, and is characterized by different shapes, materials, and colors. For example, water is associated with wisdom, emotions, and social connections. You can increase the water element in your home by adding images of water to your walls, reflecting a pond or lake in a mirror, using water fountains or aquariums in your yard, or decorating with objects that have wavy patterns. Furniture placement is also an important component of Feng Shui and increasing the “commanding position” of your desk or bed is an easy first step. According to Feng Shui teachings, being able to see the door but not being in direct alignment while using your desk or bed will bring positive energy into your life. Maximizing light is also an important Feng Shui tool. Light represents the fire element. Natural or ambient light brings relaxation and calm, an important aspect of mental health. Many homes have harsh or inadequate lighting, but putting ceiling lights on a dimmer, or adding accent or candle lighting can improve harmony in any space. Every living thing can benefit from Feng Shui. The important thing to remember is that Feng Shui is really about the energy that surrounds you in your personal space. 36

Personal Injury
By Kimm Burger
Imagine driving down the road, in the dead of the night, and coming to a stop for a disabled vehicle in front of you. You cannot go around the vehicle, so you put your flashers on to inform those drivers coming up behind you of the problems that lie ahead. However, after a few short minutes, you happen to look up in your rearview mirror and see a vehicle racing towards you without even noticing you there. You know you
are going to be hit and you grab the wheel to support yourself. Once the impact is done and the dust clears, you have broken your arm and are having trouble moving your neck due to the impact. Now what do you do? When someone is hurt, either in a car accident, slip and fall, dog bites, or by some other means, that person not only suffers from possible physical injuries but from emotional and financial injuries as well. Imagine reliving the events in this story and knowing that you suffered such injuries and are now scared to drive again. Car accidents can be one of the most traumatic experiences a person can find themselves involved in and it can be hard to get yourself back on track to where you were prior to the accident. Friends and family are great support systems to reach out to as well as counselors to help you deal with some of the emotional turmoil you face. However, what do you do when all of the financial strains come in? In most cases, those injured due to the fault of others suffer great financial strain because of unexpected medical bills, loss of wages, loss of the vehicle and possibly having to take on new payments to get a vehicle. When this happens, you can recover for those financial losses, but you can also recover for the emotional stress that was caused by the accident. A person can recover for what is called economic losses and noneconomic losses. Economic losses are those such as medical expenses incurred because of the injury, lost wages for not being able to work, or for any monetary loss you suffered as a result of the injury. The non-economic losses are those which stem from trauma and emotional distress that have been suffered as well. Non-economic losses aren’t just limited to the person in the accident but can also be recovered by family members. This is commonly known as loss of consortium, that is, the loss of love and affection from that family member. In the above situation, the person was in such of severe pain from the injuries that she could not hug her children nor provide for their basic needs. Therefore, her children suffered as a result of the negligent conduct of the other driver. It is best to understand all of the rights you have as a victim of an accident to ensure that you can recover all that you are entitled to.

Bring New Life
to an Old Space Written by 5 Healthy Towns Foundation staff
Did you know that by updating existing space in your home or on your property without building an addition, you can maximize the functionality of your environment, add curb appeal, and increase the value of your home? Today, with many of us working and schooling at home, space has become a premium. If a desk in a bedroom doesn’t meet your needs, one possibility is to renovate all or part of an old building. Many homes have old outbuildings that can find new life as an office or an apartment. With a little imagination, old sheds, your garage, a barn, or a chicken coop can provide plenty of options. Here is an inside peek at the design build process from Giraffe Design Build. https://giraffedesignbuild.com/design-build/designbuild-process/ Creating an office above the garage is a great use of unused space, and you can’t beat the commute! Having a home office that’s just a few steps away from the house is the best of worlds, providing privacy when you need to focus on work and convenience to your family. Access to the second floor will require either an interior or exterior staircase. Also, for both health and safety, building codes require a fire barrier and insulation with a high R-value between the ceiling of the garage and the floor of the office. One eco-friendly product that Giraffe uses is blown-in cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper. With 5-6 inches in the office floor, it will reach an R-value of r38 and effectively block heat transfer keeping the office space warm while providing better temperature control in the garage. 48
Another option is a complete garage conversion. There are many older homes and farms in our area with detached garages that are not in use and can be transformed into an office, a guest suite or even an apartment for an aging parent. This light-filled space, for example, was exactly that and now functions as a gracious living space to accommodate extended family visits and serve as additional work-from-home space. The open floor plan was designed for comfort, a sense of wellbeing, and efficiency. The skylight and the floor-to-ceiling windows create a bright, warm atmosphere in a small footprint so that even on grey Michigan days, this is a cheerful nurturing space. In addition to the inviting interior, this home is crowned with a “living roof” covered in perennials, annuals, and vegetable gardens during warm seasons. The green roof reduces rainwater run-off, insulates the living space below from summer heat, and provides a charming patio with a view. This great post by Giraffe Design Build discusses eco-friendly insulation. giraffedesignbuild.com/design-build/wool-insulationprotects-your-home/ With a little imagination, repurposing your space can bring you big benefits now and in the future.

Prepare Your Garden in Spring for a Great Summer By New Media Retailer As daylight lengthens and temperatures warm, gardeners are always eager to get into spring planting. If you look past the first flush of spring, however, you can take easy steps early in the season to give your garden a great summer. It doesn’t matter how large your garden may be, whether you plant in containers, raised beds, small plots, or longer rows, or whether you grow vegetables, fruits, flowers, or herbs. These simple steps can help you prepare your garden in spring so the summer growing season will be easier, healthier, and more bountiful for all your crops. PREPARE TOOLS Even before spring has sprung, gardeners can prepare their tools for spring and summer work. Check for rust or damage and clean and repair tools as needed. Tighten handles, oil hinges, and sharpen edges so tools are ready for use. If desired, investigate updating tools with new equipment, such as ergonomic options or new designs that can make summer work easier. INSPECT STRUCTURES As winter retreats from the garden, it is time to inspect raised beds, arbors, trellises, and plant supports. Note any wear or damage and make repairs so each structure is ready to hold and support plants as soon as the growing season begins. A bit later in spring, do the same for sprinklers, drip systems, and other irrigation tools so there is no interruption in water supplies. TEST SOIL Every few years, it can be helpful to test the garden soil to gauge its pH, nutrient levels, porousness, and other properties. This can help gardeners decide on the best amendments to improve the soil or which plants will thrive best in the soil’s condition. Testing in early spring can help gardeners be ready with the best soil for spring and summer planting. 50
PRESSURE WASHING Spring is the best time to pressure wash outdoor hardscaping such as walkways, patios, and decks before adjacent plants put out delicate growth that might be damaged by cleaning equipment or an errant, highpowered spray. This is also a great time to wash patio furniture so it’s ready to be enjoyed in spring and summer. PRUNE WOODY PERENNIALS Woody shrubs and perennials such as roses, hydrangea, and boxwoods should be pruned in very early spring to help keep their shape and encourage better flowering. Use clean, sharp tools to keep the plants healthy and make cuts above dormant buds. By pruning at this time, none of the plant’s spring energy will be wasted for growth that will only be cut away. Use caution when pruning spring-flowering shrubs and trees like lilacs and magnolias. Prune only dead and damaged wood or you risk pruning buds and there will be no flowers. START SEEDS In northern regions with shorter growing seasons, it can be beneficial to start seeds indoors before the ground has warmed enough for spring planting. Using seeds can also give a gardener more plant and cultivar varieties to experiment with, and seeds are cheaper than already sprouted seedlings to populate flowerbeds, containers, and gardens. FERTILIZE BEDS AND TREES Applying a slow-release fertilizer in spring will help nourish flowerbeds for the entire season. This is also the ideal time to apply fertilizer to young trees and other plantings that haven’t yet reached their full growth, so they have the proper nutrition to reach their potential. Choose a fertilizer blend that best suits individual plants and apply it appropriately for each plant’s needs.
AERATE Aerating your landscape, from turf grass to tilling garden beds, can revitalize the soil after winter dormancy and compaction. This is a great time to work in a light layer of snow to bring air and nitrogen into the soil, or to till in compost, manure, and other organic material to nourish the soil. Aerating early in spring will ensure this nutrition is ready for spring growth. ATTRACT BIRDS Birds can be great garden helpers and putting out feeders, bird baths, and birdhouses in spring can bring these helpers right to the yard. While some birds may eat seeds or garden produce, they will eat far more bugs and damaging insects, protecting the garden without the need for excessive chemicals or harsher treatments. WEEDING Weeds are a never-ending threat to a prosperous garden, but, fortunately, they can be easy to control in spring. Pulling weeds by hand is easier in spring’s wet soil when the roots are loose. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide can also help control spring weeds and be sure they aren’t outrageous through the summer. No matter what garden tasks you begin in spring, be sure not to overstretch yourself. After the inactivity of winter, it can be easy to strain muscles or cause sprains—injuries that could severely impair your gardening abilities long after spring. Take each task slowly and both you and your garden will benefit from the deliberate care and warmups of spring before the real workout of summer gardening begins!

By Diane K Clow Grandma Quilter and Sewist Picker of Vintage Things
Today I reread all of the previous “Keeping it in Stitches” (KIIS) articles that I have written. The first being for the Simply Hers, May/June 2017 edition. Whoa. That means this is the Five-Year Anniversary for KIIS; thirty articles of random blathering that some of you have actually read thank you!! Anyway, the reason I was reading over the history of my writing was so I could be sure I wasn’t repeating myself from some previous topic. Somehow the memory stick just doesn’t “stick” well for a five-year term. Or even as to what it was I had for breakfast. It came in a box, served in a bowl . . . . In reviewing, I also saw that often the topic was food or mostly baked goods. I will apologize for that now. The topic for today is “Home.” Hubs and I spent years and years working on our “Home.” Forty years of vacation time and weekends all spent wallpapering, painting, constructing, decorating, all based on a “renovate as you have the funds program.” We thought we’d never be done. And we were right! We ARE never done. So now we are doing projects for the next chapter in our lives called “old age.” Replacing things that had to be painted and stained with composite new stuff that doesn’t. The 40-yearold wood siding that Hubs put on the garage is
52
now clad in aluminum siding. The deck flooring has been replaced with never-have-to-stain-again material. I am hanging up my paintbrush and turning my step ladder into a DIY bookshelf. Part of this process also included turning a bathtub surround into a walk-in shower and replacing traditional turn door knobs into the flip-like ones for easier use. Unfortunately, this means my three-year-old granddaughter has easier access for escape. I have also found my “style” for decor. I find that I really like a mix of old and new. More modern, neutral, soft colors with a bit of history from an old furniture piece thrown in. I have a couple of mid-century orange cushioned, curved arm chairs that guests admire and share that they may come up missing. My mother is the worst offender for this. (I might have to add a Gothic dungeon look and chain them to the fireplace.) I framed a gas station map of Michigan and hung it in my hall (some of you younger readers may have to Google “map”). It is all kind of a “if it makes you feel happy, include it” look. Our “preparing for old age” look may not get featured in any home decor magazines, but it’s comfortable, colorful, and home to us. For now, however, my mother has left our home so I’ll unchain my chairs. Keeping it in Stitches for the thirtieth time!

RAISING THE
BAR
ON GARDENING If you've never grown vegetables in raised beds before, I promise that once you do, you'll be spoiled for the rest of your gardening life. With less weeds, better water retention, and better drainage in areas with clay soils, they’re fabulously handy.

Tips for Easy Growing There is a lot of work that goes into creating a great garden. However, there are plenty of ways to make it easier on yourself and produce much better plants at the same time. Here are a few of our favorit tips. HEALTHY SOIL IS SQUARE ONE If you want a healthy garden, you need healthy soil! One of the easiest ways to achieve this, especially for those with acidic and rocky soil in their yards, is building a raised planter.

ADD COMPOST PRIOR TO PLANTING One of the most important things you can do to grow healthy plants is add compost to the soil. It’s important that this is done well in advance so that there is time for the compost to stabilize and integrate. This should be done approximately two weeks before planting. MAKE SURE YOUR PLANTS HAVE ADEQUATE DRAINAGE It’s highly important that your plant’s roots are able to get air. For the roots to get air, there needs to be minimal amounts of stagnant water in the soil. Better drainage can be achieved by drilling small holes in the bottom of your planter. If planting in the ground, you will need to use more compost and avoid overpacking the soil. MAKE YOUR LOAD LIGHTER Replace the bottom third of your pot with packing peanuts and then layer that with a piece of landscaping fabric. After that, add some lightweight soil. You’ll likely be surprised by how much this simple trick lightens the load. KNOW WHEN TO WATER AND HOW MUCH TO GIVE One of the hardest things to master is a proper watering schedule. The best way to figure out when and how much water your plant needs is to do some research online. Different plants in different areas will have varying needs. Make sure you take your climate into consideration. FIND THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOUR GARDEN Simply put, if your plants are in a bad spot, they’re not going to do very well. Pay attention to where the sun shines the most in your yard. Also pay close attention to where the shady areas develop during the day. Remember, its not about where your garden looks the best, but where your garden will be the healthiest that matters. KNOW WHAT’S OUTSIDE OF YOUR SKILL LEVEL This one is really important for beginners. It’s crucial that you are aware of your skill level. It’s a good idea to stick to simpler to grow plants when you are first starting off. Trust me, there is a lot that goes into growing certain species. The last thing you want to do is take on something that is expert level your first-time gardening. This will do little more than lead to disappointment and a bad taste. Take it easy at first, learn how it all works, then go for the harder stuff.

Pet Talk SPRING PET CARE TIPS The following article was taken from the ASPCA website which is excellent source of information for pet lovers! www.aspca.org Spring has sprung, and with the change of season, our thoughts turn to yard work, spring cleaning, and muchneeded home improvement projects. Before you embark on seasonal chores or outdoor revelry, take inventory of potential springtime hazards for your furry friends. Screen Yourself Many pet parents welcome the breezy days of spring by opening their windows. Unfortunately, they also unknowingly put their pets at risk—especially cats, who are apt to jump or fall through unscreened windows. Be sure to install snug and sturdy screens in all of your windows. Buckle Up! While most dogs love to feel the wind on their furry faces, allowing them to ride in the beds of pick-up trucks or stick their heads out of moving-car windows is dangerous. Flying debris and insects can cause inner ear or eye injuries and lung infections and abrupt stops or turns can cause major injury, or worse! Pets riding in cars should always be secured in a crate or wearing a seatbelt harness designed especially for them. Spring Cleaning Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition in many households but be sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Almost all cleaning products, even all natural ones, contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. The key to using them safely is to read and follow label directions for proper use and storage. Visit this page for more information: www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/poisonoushousehold-products Home Improvement 101 Products such as paints, mineral spirits, and solvents can be toxic to your pets and cause severe irritation or chemical burns. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. Also, be cautious of physical hazards 66
including nails, staples, insulation, blades, and power tools. It may be wise to confine your dog or cat to a designated petfriendly room during home improvement projects. Let Your Garden Grow—With Care Pet parents, take care—fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides keep our plants and lawns healthy and green, but their ingredients may be dangerous if your pet ingests them. Always store these products in out-of-the-way places and follow label instructions carefully. Many popular springtime plants—including rhododendron and azaleas—are also highly toxic to pets and can prove fatal if eaten. Find a list of toxic and non-toxic plants here: www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poisoncontrol/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants Ah-Ah-Achoo! Like us, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants, and pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause itching, minor sniffling, and sneezing, or life-threatening anaphylactic shock to insect bites and stings. If you suspect your pet has a springtime allergy, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible. Pesky Little Critters April showers bring May flowers—and an onslaught of bugs! Make sure your pet is on year-round heartworm preventive medication, as well as a flea and tick control program. Ask your doctor to recommend a plan designed specifically for your pet. Out and About Warmer weather means more trips to the park, longer walks, and more chances for your pet to wander off! Make sure your dog or cat has a microchip for identification and wears a tag imprinted with your home address, cell phone, and any other relevant contact information. If you suspect your pet may have come in contact with or ingested a potentially poisonous substance, contact your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately at (888) 426-4435.

2020 & 2021 People’s Choice Favorite Realtor! How do I get my home ready to sell? What are the best "bang for your buck" improvements? Most people know that major upgrades like kitchens and bathrooms can add significant value to your home. But what if you want to spruce things up on a budget? Consider some of these!
What to know when preparing to sell your home...
-Fresh paint - a fresh coat of paint makes things look cleaner and brighter, and just gives a fresh feel. You'd be surprised what you can paint - even things like old outdated sinks, paneling, cabinets... not just walls! -Clean up/spruce up landscaping - you don't have to do a major landscaping overhaul to clean things up and maybe add a little color here and there. Giving things a nice crisp, organized look can do wonders for your curb appeal! -Spruce up entry ways/approach to the home - this is a person's "first impression" of your home. So, the entry outside and inside should be made to look and feel welcoming. -Improve lighting - Make sure you replace any bulbs that might be burnt out, and that lighting is nice and bright in all of the rooms.
Working & Bright Lighting is Key!
-De-Clutter! This might require a few sessions of purging unnecessary items, but it is worth it! Clutter makes spaces look and feel smaller, and less relaxing. Eliminate clutter in the main living areas of the home especially.

Gardens for Plants: Honoring Regional Ecology Mother Nature does not want you to wait for an invitation or schedule an appointment; She is ready and willing to entertain at a moment’s notice. Anyone, regardless of age or educational background, can observe and enjoy the natural, cyclical occurrences unfolding daily in their backyards and beyond. Nature encourages and values community spirit and banks on regionally-adapted seeds and plants. Climate and plant culture are different across the U.S, so it makes sense that in order to grow well, our landscapes need to be different too. It’s time to “localize” yards and create gardens and outdoor spaces that work in synergy with regional climate and plant culture.
Onward & Upward
In The Garden Written by Susan Betz
One of the most significant trends in the gardening world is letting nature nurture us. Shrinking property boundaries, life in the digital age, and tightly-packed schedules are provoking a yearning for a deeper relationship with the natural world. We’re increasingly aware of how plants and gardening connect us to the healing power of the natural world. Good garden design begins with an understanding of the relationships between plants to place, plants to people, and plants to other plants. Because after all, good relationships give our lives meaning and worth. Gardens for People: Honoring Homemaking After a busy day, there is nothing sweeter than being able to come home and kick your feet up in a lush green space. Families differ in their individual lifestyles and interests and so should their gardens. Everyone can have a garden – just not the same garden. Your garden can support your lifestyle. The best home gardens are designed to serve and please the people who live there. The finest outdoor spaces are created in harmony with nature and demonstrate respect for the web of life. Let nature be your guide and plant or encourage what naturally wants to grow in your yard and neighborhood. Adapt design strategies from nature to solve challenges you might have: beds that aren’t quite working visually or garden areas that don’t function without lots of maintenance. Choosing plants that attract a variety of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife benefits the environment and people by providing a rich, sensory experience to play, work, relax, grow food, and enjoy the rewards of being in nature. Plants should be free of pesticides (especially neonicotinoids), ecoregion-relevant, deer-resistant, and low-maintenance. 78
Gardeners frequently remark that native plants are messy and they do not have the extra space to devote to natives. Some natives are indeed quite aggressive; however, others are easier to contain in the home landscape. In every backyard and beyond, there is a spot just waiting for the right neighborly native. With all of the regionally resilient native plants available, you can easily fill these spaces. Some natives fit perfectly into rock gardens, while others make good garden path edgers. Others are perfect for plantings along roadways, while some are well behaved enough to grow among the flowers in your beds and borders. Gardens for Place: Honoring Placemaking Gardens that inspire admiration and delight fit their location and use. Our sense of place is established not only by the “place” but our relationship to it and is dependent on our firsthand knowledge of and experience with that place. If we look closely, every region on earth can tell us many stories; the relationships between the plants and animals that have helped shape it and the history and culture of the people who lived there. Dig into the history of the land where you live. Who lived there before you? How did they cultivate the land? What was its wildest form? Research which plant communities would have existed on the site had it not been disturbed and use them as a design model. What plants and trees inhabit your space? Which ones are native to your area? What birds, insects, and other wildlife do you share in your outdoor space?

CARBS are NOT your enemy! By Melissa McCance
These days, carbohydrates are often portrayed as an evil monster that’s making you sluggish, overweight, and miserable. The truth is that carbs—like fats and protein—are an essential macronutrient in your diet and their proper use can provide a number of benefits. Carbs are the main fuel for our bodies and provide the energy for daily activities and simply living. They are also the primary fuel for our brains and nervous systems. When we eat carbs, our body breaks them down into sugar, which can be converted into energy straight from our bloodstream or stored as glycogen in our muscles and liver to convert into energy later.1 Inadequate carbohydrate intake can have some interesting—and unexpected—side effects. People who regularly eat below the recommended number of carbs per day are likely to have issues with an unhappy digestion (carb-rich foods are often also fiber-rich foods), an overall feeling of weakness, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, moodiness and irritability (carbs increase our production of the mood-balancing hormone serotonin), and “paint thinner breath” because the body must shift to breaking down fat for energy which produces ketones that affect the breath. If you do higherintensity exercise, a lack of carbs can mean frustrating and disappointing workouts. Now, that being said, there certainly are smart and not-so-smart carb choices, so don’t consider this your go-ahead to gorge on cake, potato chips, and ice cream. The best sources of carbohydrates are unprocessed or minimally processed things like vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and legumes. These sources will provide not only carbs but are also excellent sources of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. So, yes, load up on all those vegetables you know you should be eating. Opt for whole fruit over fruit juice, and think beyond the bread aisle for whole grains.
84
Things like oatmeal, quinoa, and farro are good options. And, beans are great for fiber and carbs. Obviously, the next question is how many carbohydrates should someone eat per day? A good starting point for your carbs is 45% of your daily caloric intake and that figure will vary based on activity level, energy requirements, and other individual needs. Carbs provide four calories per gram, which means that someone eating 2,000 calories per day should start at about 225 grams of quality carbs per day. If you want to fine-tune your best carb levels, you can discuss your diet with a dietitian or nutritionist for personalized advice. So, the bottom line? Don’t run from carbs. You need them for energy and brain health. (Actually, if your diet is too low in this nutrient, you won’t have the energy to run!) Mexican Flan WWW.ALLRECIPES.COM
INGREDIENTS 1 cup white sugar ¼ cup fresh orange juice 1 cup whole milk 1 tablespoon grated orange peel 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 3 eggs 1 tablespoon cornstarch 3 egg yolks 1 cup heavy cream
DIRECTIONS Place sugar in a heavy saucepan over medium-high heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar melts and turns a golden amber color, about 10 minutes. Watch carefully once the syrup begins to change color, because it burns very easily. Carefully pour the melted sugar syrup into a flan mold. Let cool. Preheat oven to 350°F. Pour whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, egg yolks, orange juice, orange peel, vanilla extract, and cornstarch into a blender and blend for a minute or so until smooth. Pour in the cream and pulse several times to incorporate the cream. Pour the mixture over the cooled caramel syrup in the flan mold. Line a roasting pan with a damp kitchen towel. Place the flan mold on the towel in the pan, and place the roasting pan on the oven rack. Fill roasting pan with boiling water to reach halfway up the sides of the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven until the center of flan is set but still slightly jiggly when moved, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Let the flan cool, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours. To serve, run a sharp paring knife around the inside of the mold to release the flan. Invert a plate over the mold, flip the mold over, and gently remove the mold to unmold the flan and reveal the syrupy caramel topping.
NOTES: NOTE: You can use a round cake pan if you don’t have a flan mold. 90
