Wow—this is an INTENSE time for me but also an exciting one! The entire Simply Hers staff is pumped about our newest publication, Michigan Parent. The twiceyearly magazine focuses on raising children from birth through high school, and we hope it will help make the challenges of parenting a little easier. We’ll be featuring topical articles addressing important issues for parents and children, some fun crafts and recipes you can do with your kids, humorous “tales from the trenches,” and much more. The first issue is available now; look for the next one in November!

Check engine lights may be red, orange, yellow, or amber. Sometimes it is accompanied by a message in your message center or with warning indicators for other systems. These warning indicators are “alarms” from your car’s computer that one or more systems have found a problem. Today’s cars have anywhere from 30 to 100 microprocessors (ECUs) that are constantly processing thousands of points of data from multiple sensors in your vehicle. These sensors send information for everything including temperature, air, and fuel ratios, pressures, levels, and so on. All of this data is sent to the ECUs that sort out the data and send information back to actuators and modules which tell components how to react. If a system fails to perform within the set parameters, a fault code is set and data is stored in the vehicle’s computer. Now, sometimes this can all be caused by something as simple as the gas cap did not get tightened properly. And, certainly, there are a lot of “do it yourself” and “free diagnostic” options available to consumers today. The problem is that the codes that are stored in the computer are ONLY reference points telling a trained professional where to start. It usually is necessary to test different components within that system to find the cause. Typical costs to diagnose a check engine light range from $70 to $100. Ignoring the light may lead to more damage to your vehicle and more costly repairs. The other major reason not to ignore that light is if your car finds another problem; it cannot notify you as the light is already on. It can also create a potential for injury to you and/or other drivers on the road. When is it urgent to go to your repair shop? If the light is flashing, it is not recommended to drive the vehicle as this is typically a critical warning. Should the light come on while you are driving and it’s accompanied by severe running issues like chugging/lurching/jerking, loss of power, or visual smoke/water/steam/oil, safely pull off the road and call for a tow truck. If the light is on steady with no severe running conditions, call your repair facility and schedule an appointment soon.

My younger son Lucas is now—incredibly—done with high school. Throughout all the final events and graduation I was a mix of emotions: the heart tug of “it’s really over” and swelling pride for all of his accomplishments. Lucas has grown into such a fine young man that despite sometimes wishing I could turn back the clock, I look forward to seeing what he will do in the years ahead. Now, I just have to get myself ready for sending him off to Kalamazoo College in August!
Our next big event is my son Gavin’s wedding in August which will be another happy but very emotional time. I’m thankful to be entirely delighted by the woman who will be my daughter-in-law, and I know that it will be a beautiful and very special day. I am, of course, already sending up prayers for good weather and hoping that the ridiculous amount of rain we’ve been having will be over by then! All of us on the Simply Hers staff hope you are having a great summer filled with good food, fun adventures, and special times with family and friends. Take some time to settle back in the hammock or chaise with a nice beverage and enjoy this issue. Besides our great regular features, we’ve spotlighted some local businesses, and provided tips on growing a couple of vegetables you might not have raised before. A continued thank you to our advertisers who make this magazine possible! Please browse the ads and discover the many wonderful area businesses that are ready and eager to serve you. Thank you, too, to all of you who read these pages and give us such encouraging feedback. If you haven’t already liked our Facebook page, remember that it’s the best way to stay current with what’s happening in the Simply Hers community. WIshing you a safe, happy, fun-filled summer!

Ready, Set,
Summer!
It’s time to take the (stylish) plunge straight into the deep end of this season’s fashion. Whether you are heading to the beach, a family reunion, or the hottest concert of the year, having the right look will make your summer sizzle. We have collected a few of our favorite easy-to-wear styles that are perfect for any summer soiree.
11
White Denim & A Sassy Print Summertime is packed with events. Try something new this year and show up to the next bridal shower, brunch, or wedding wearing an in-your-face floral print or a splash of geometric pattern. When the temperatures rise, nothing looks cooler or more put together than crisp white denim. Try pairing any white pant or skirt with a top in a conversational print and a pair of bright slides. Instant Summer!
Dress for It
Find the perfect summer dress to throw over your swimwear as a cover-up for the beach or for hitting the cocktail bars after those long days in the sun. A short dress is perfect for when the summer is in full swing and the evenings are balmy and warm.
12
Dare to Bare
Strappy dresses are a way to stay stylish (and cool) without showing too much skin. Pair with block heel sandals and be ready for anything. Pick pieces with a serious punch of color like coral, blue, or yellow for a fresh, summer look. Pair your summer brights with neutrals you already know and love.
Top it Off in Style Keep the sun out of your eyes with a cute sun hat. It will help keep your skin looking young and healthy and also protect dry and brittle hair from UV rays. You can wear it in both formal and casual settings, adding a touch of fashion as well as sun protection.
13
Summer! Stay Put This
Summer is full of wonderful things — but melting makeup, smeared eyeliner, and supersticky lipstick are not among them. We have found some great tips for keeping makeup looking fresh and pretty even when the weather is working against you.
Replace shininess with dewiness
A slick T-zone instantly telegraphs the message “I’m hot” — and we don’t mean sexy. To eliminate unsightly shine in seconds, nothing beats blotting papers. They’re cheap and easy; you just press and go. If you need to perk up your makeup, too, blot first, then follow up with a pressed powder with a hint of luminescence.
Give your eyeshadow staying power
For longer-lasting shadow, avoid using eye cream on your lids (it can break down makeup), and smooth on an eye primer instead. It will minimize creasing and create a base for the shadow to cling to so it lasts longer. For the ultimate in all-day wearability, layer a powder over a cream. Doubling up works for liner, too. Apply your regular pencil or cream liner, then use a small angled brush to press dark shadow over the liner to set it for longer wear.
Ditch the powder blush Blush adds balance and healthiness to any look, but if you’re still using the same powdery formula, your flush might be getting cakey faster than it takes to get to work in the morning. Stains are great for longevity in hot weather. Use a gel or blush stain then blend a touch of a cream blush on top. It will give a healthy vibrance to your cheeks just like the one you get after a jog.
Play with fun, vibrant colors
Now’s the perfect time to play up the colors in your makeup palette. Besides looking summery, livelier colors brighten the face and bring a youthful glow to skin. If you tend to stick with neutrals, experiment with just one area of your face. A punchy blush on the apples of the cheeks is a good place to start
14
Swap heavy lipsticks for lip stains Toss your heavy matte lipsticks for the summer and try the season’s simplest trend: lip stains. These long-lasting formulas offer sheer coverage that can be built up, making them super versatile. Stains are great because you can always add a lip balm to add moisture without worrying about the color traveling.
Pro Tip:
You should be re-applying sunscreen every two hours, but that can be hard when you’re out and about, especially when you don’t want to use your hands. Try this sunscreen trick that involves repurposing an empty makeup compact: Use dish soap to clean an old liquid foundation compact and cushion. Let dry. Soak the cushion with your favorite face sunscreen inside the compact. To re-apply, dip a sponge applicator into the cushion and dab on your face.

Exercise for mental health
Jess Piper ACE Certified Personal Trainer & Senior Fitness Specialist PRIME Fitness
Why do we work out? Have you ever really asked yourself that question? If you ask most people, the common answers are to get in better shape, lose weight, tone up their muscles, and have more endurance for doing daily activities. We all know exercise is great for the body, but what can exercise do for the mind? In this article we will take a look at some of the positive benefits that exercise can have on the brain.
Did you know that many exercises from walking to resistance training can reduce symptoms of depression? Exercise is a natural mood enhancer that releases a chemical in the body called endorphins. The release of this chemical along with others can help relieve stress, pain, and improve your mood. Regular exercise is not just important for the body but also for the mind. The psychological and emotional benefits of being regularly Margot V. Biermann Athletic Center • Corner of Oak and College Streets 16
active can help improve self-esteem and mental clarity. Although we primarily look at exercise as a way to get our bodies in shape, we tend to forget the importance that exercise has on the mind as well. Exercise comes in many shapes and forms. The important thing is to pick an exercise program that works for you so you know you will stick with it. In order to achieve your overall wellness goals, your mind and body need to work together. Remember that exercise can help you have a healthy mind and body, and when you feel good on the inside, it shines through to the outside! Lucy & nellies a beautiful shopping experience BY melissa mccance
There are those gems that provide the whole experience: themes and colors that draw you in, tasteful displays, and a wonderful array of merchandise that tempts you to throw financial caution to the winds.
F
or dedicated shoppers, finding a truly fun store is a “high five” experience. Some shopping is utilitarian—no browsing, just get the job done. Others stores are more interesting and merit some extra looking around when you’re there. But, there are those gems that provide the whole experience: themes and colors that draw you in, tasteful displays, and a wonderful array of merchandise that tempts you to throw financial caution to the winds. Lucy and Nellies in Allen is one of those stores. Even though I urge you to visit this lovely shop, don’t say I didn’t warn you! While Karen Sage grew up in Jonesville, she spent 30 years in Alabama where she owned Oh So Coastal!!—a retail and wholesale furniture, home décor, and interior design business employing five designers. Karen is justifiably proud that the store was voted the 2015 People’s Choice Best Furniture/Home Décor retailer in the Gulf Shores area. At the huge 2017 Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market, her booth was honored with the Outstanding Visual Display award. Health issues brought Karen back to the area in January 2018, and soon she was scouting locations for a new store. Lucy and Nellies opened Memorial Day weekend of 2018, and Karen’s experience in creating beautiful spaces is seen throughout the shop.
18
Merchandise is carefully selected and combined in arrangements that catch your attention and keep you looking. Although a lake/cottage theme currently predominates, the store is definitely not just for lake homeowners. You can choose from a wide variety of items that work with a number of decorating styles. Besides the store merchandise, Karen has 35 years of custom furniture painting experience she can use to create a special piece for you or to give your cabinets a new look. Design services are available if you want help putting together a beautiful room. When asked what she loves about having a store like Lucy and Nellies, Karen replied, “Being able to be creative. Home should be where you’re happiest, so helping people create a beautiful, happy home is very satisfying.” She has honored her family legacy of making happy homes by naming the store after her grandmothers, and she has family working with her—niece Alicia Jones has recently joined her in the store. Lucy and Nellies is located at 112 E. Chicago Road in Allen, Michigan. Store hours are 10 to 5, Wednesday through Saturday, and 11 to 3 on Sunday. You can reach them by phone at 517-227-8497 or by email at lucyandnellies@gmail.com. Also, follow them on Facebook to see the latest news!

why physical therapy?
By: Rosemary Wendt, PT, DPT – Hillsdale staff Physical Therapist Do you have new or old pain, stiff muscles, joints that don’t want to move after a surgery, swelling from an old or new injury, general inability to complete activities due to restriction somewhere in your body? Yes? Did you know these are all things (and then some) that a PT can assist with? Common PT Questions What do we do? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we “help injured or ill people improve their movement and manage their pain.” According to the American Physical Therapist Association, we are “movement experts who optimize quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education”. Lastly, according to Wikipedia, we “use mechanical force and movement (kinesiology), manual therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy to remediate impairments and promote mobility and function.” In short, we help you return to your previous lifestyle with the help of exercise, hands-on manual therapy, modalities, and education. How can a PT help? We can help you regain function and return you to your normal every day and recreational activities

by assisting you and your body to move the way it is intended to in a pain-free way. What’s a typical visit entail? A visit is generally about an hour long and includes a variety of things: exercises to promote cardiovascular function; stretching for range of motion; strengthening of muscles for proper movement; hands-on care for spot-specific treatment with bony, muscle, and fascial issues; and modalities (heat, ice, electrical stimulation/TENS) for pain and swelling. How long did we go to school? A PT now goes to school for seven years. Recent graduates over the past 10 years have their doctorate degree, but there are some clinicians practicing with their master’s and bachelor’s degrees in PT. Does insurance cover visits? As a courtesy, Athletico will call and verify your insurance benefits prior to your first appointment. Athletico accepts a wide variety of insurance plans, including Medicare, Meridian, BCBS, and Priority Health. Our best suggestion is to call us and ask! Several insurances now allow us to treat without a physical therapy prescription for 10 visits
brooklyn 250 S. Main St., Ste. 4 517-592-8695
over 21 days, which is called Direct Access. Conclusion – Why Physical Therapy? We understand that it’s easier to go to the doctor and get a pill versus come to PT a few times a week. However, that pill typically masks the true issue and does not fix the problem, requiring you to return to your doctor. PT will help you get your life back in a natural way without refilling a prescription over and over. We work in conjunction with your doctor, communicating along the way and co-treating you for whatever your problem may be. Our goal is to help you regain your function (get you back to golf, stronger so you can lift at work more easily, reduce the pain so you can walk, stretch so you can tolerate maneuvering for your job), and, in the end, making sure you’re satisfied before you walk out our door. For more information and to find your closest Athletico location, visit Athletico.com, or call the Hillsdale office at 517-439-2376. We also offer free injury assessments to determine if you are a physical therapy candidate or to help guide you in your medical options.

is GERD
Getting the Best of You?
By Kara Wilson, PA-C Hillsdale Medical Associates
Ever have periods of time when you have more abdominal bloating, increased belching, or heartburn? These are symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Symptoms like this can occur when acid from the stomach flows up into the esophagus where it does not belong. Other symptoms of GERD may include a sour taste in your mouth, a feeling of a lump in your throat, difficulty swallowing, or even regurgitating food. If you have a dry cough at night or increased hoarseness in your voice, these may also be signs of GERD. Acid reflux can even worsen asthma symptoms. These symptoms can be very bothersome and may become more frequent at times. There are several changes in your diet and lifestyle that can be made to improve these symptoms. Eating smaller meals to not overfill your stomach is helpful along with avoiding spicy or acidic foods such as meals with tomato-based sauces or citrus fruits. Even peppermint can lead to increased reflux symptoms. Caffeine and nicotine should be avoided along with NSAIDS (ibuprofen or naprosyn) as these can worsen symptoms of reflux. Alcohol is also another aggravating factor in GERD.
22
If you find you seem to be having more symptoms at night, such as having a sour taste in your mouth or even vomit, elevate the head of
your bed. Do not just prop up your pillows as this will cause a strain in your neck and eventually just squish down, but actually prop the bed posts up with books or bricks at the head of the bed. This will allow gravity to help you. Also, to improve nighttime symptoms, do not eat or drink two to three hours before bed. Even drinking water before bed can lead to increased reflux. When diet and lifestyle changes are not helping your symptoms, there are several over the counter medications that can. Antacids, such as Rolaids or Tums, can be helpful at the onset of symptoms. Other medications like Zantac (ranitidine) or Prilosec, Prevacid, or Nexium can be helpful and even be used as a preventative medication as they decrease the acid production in the stomach. When GERD is left untreated it can lead to serious damage to your stomach and esophagus. You may develop a stricture, which can lead to difficulty swallowing. Developing an ulcer in the stomach or esophagus is also possible as is the development of cancer. So, if you are needing over the counter medications more than twice a week or if your symptoms have not resolved after two weeks of over the counter medication, please make an appointment with your primary care provider to discuss these symptoms.

My Summer How’s your summer going? We’re right in the thick of it right now – have your sanity? I don’t know about you, but I never seem to get as much done in the summer as I plan. The idea of being unscheduled always gives me the false promise that I will be able to get more done. And yet, that rarely seems to happen. Gray Matters By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine
Now that school is out for the summer and we don’t have to wake up at the crack of down, I love the fact that I don’t have to pack their lunches, make sure permission slips are signed, and hurriedly get them on the bus before collapsing in an exhausted heap. BUT, now they are home. Yes, I love having them home, but they are ALWAYS here. Since I work from home, there is no quiet time. My ability to concentrate and focus on my work is little to none. I know I should probably structure some time every day where “Mom needs to work, so she can’t be bothered.” In theory that works, but in reality, it’s almost laughable. No two days are the same at my house during the summer. There are impromptu play dates, trips to the store that take twice as long as predicted, and the almost CONSTANT need for a snack. (Seriously, these kids don’t eat this much at school, why do they have to eat this much at home?) So, my plans to repaint the bathroom or strip wallpaper in the bedroom all seem completely doable in June, but by the time August rolls around, they are still undone. I usually have

lofty goals but weak execution. I will still strive to get these tasks done this summer, but I have decided won’t stress too much if they don’t get done. There’s always September, right? I recently read a meme or saying or something on social media (I‘ve given up trying to figure out what all those different things are called) that said as parents we only have 18 summers with our kids. It was meant to put things into perspective for parents. And, it did in a way for me. While I still am going to make sure my kids learn responsibility with chores this summer and I will continue to work from home, I do realize that this summer is one of a very few I have with my kids. And, they are all at pretty perfect ages for summer fun, too. They are old enough to be independent (but not too independent), young enough to still be imaginative and creative in their play, and young enough to still want me around (most of the time). So, if my son asks me to play catch, we’re headed outside to throw the ball around. If my youngest wants to read with me, I will happily find out what Laura Ingalls is up to next, and, if my oldest spontaneously gives me one of her rare two arms around hugs, I will not let go until she does. I know I only have a limited number of summers with my kids, and, while I am not going to tally up how many I have left, I am sure going to try to make this one count.

Those with obvious deformity and pain thatis not relieved with rest should be evaluatedmore quickly. Parents play a large role in prevention, especially when it comes to helmet use. I encourageparents to have a hardline approach to helmetuse by creating the habit of always having ahelmet on while riding a bike or similar toy. Itbecomes second nature, like putting on a seatbelt. Grow Where You Are Planted. By Rachel Yoder
Horseradish
& Artichokes
Since both of these perennial crops are a vital ingredient to so many sauces and dips, I’m combining them into one article. Horseradish, grown for its spicy roots, is native to Northern Europe and grows vigorously in our climate. The flower head of the artichoke is harvested for consumption, and, while they do prefer warmer winters, there are a few tricks we can use to get them growing well here. One thing I will always remember about growing real horseradish is a paper my friend and fellow gardener Jim Fellabaum wrote for a college class. In it, he denounced the grocery store squeeze tubes and sang the virtues of the superior flavor of fresh homegrown horseradish. So, this one’s for you, Jim! When selecting the location of your new horseradish patch, pick a spot that won’t be disturbed like one end of your asparagus planting. You can get quality horseradish roots from various online sources (I recommend Stark Bro’s) or at garden centers. Horseradish isn’t picky and will grow well in most soil types; it prefers full sun but it will also tolerate a few hours of shade. You will only need a few roots to get going and they are typically sold in packs of five.
28
When you receive your roots, you will notice a diagonal cut at one end—this is the end you point down into the soil. Place roots in the ground at a 45° angle, 18” apart, and cover with one to two inches of soil and mulch well. Refrain from harvesting in the first year to allow the plants to establish themselves. You can harvest roots in the second fall after the first frost. Ease roots up with a garden fork, separate out larger roots,
and replant smaller ones immediately. To store, cut off tops, brush off the soil, and store in sand like carrots in a root cellar or in the crisper of the fridge. Roots typically keep for 3 months. The key to a successful artichoke planting in our zone is two-fold: selecting an appropriate variety and a tactical overwintering strategy since plants are only hardy down to about 20°. Varieties like Northern Star, Imperial Star, and Violetto are good options. You can start plants by seed in mid-winter (10-12 weeks before the last frost) or purchase started plants. Artichokes are heavy feeders so be sure to incorporate lots of rich compost into the soil before planting. To overwinter, cut back plants to ground level in the fall after the first light frost. Dig up roots, shake away the soil, and store bare roots in a box of peat moss in your garage, basement, or fridge. Or, artichokes easily can be grown in containers. Simply cut back plants to their base in late fall and move the entire container into a garage or basement (shoot for a place that will be 35°-50°) and water every six weeks until spring’s arrival. Flower stalks will be produced in the early spring of the plants’ second year. After chokes are harvested, you can cut back the flower stalks to encourage the growth of a second fall crop. To harvest, cut buds and 2” to 3” of stem from plants before the scales begin to open. Chokes can be stored in the fridge for 3 weeks. Hillsdale College
— By Sarah Gray —
Celebrating its 175th year, Hillsdale College has been a cornerstone of Hillsdale County since it was founded in 1844. The liberal arts college attracts students from across the country and the world. In 2018, Forbes report of America’s Top Colleges ranked Hillsdale College 35th in the Midwest and 141st in private colleges. The school has approximately 1,450 students and 124 staff on its campus located north of downtown Hillsdale. Hillsdale College’s history is as rich as it is long. It was founded as Michigan Central College in Spring Arbor Michigan in 1844. Eight years later it moved to its current location and changed its name to Hillsdale College. The institution was established by Freewill Baptists, a denomination and group of people that believe in free grace, free salvation, and free will. While the college was founded by this group, Hillsdale College has officially been non-denominational since it began. It was also the first American college to prohibit in its charter “any discrimination based on race, religion, or sex,” and “became an early force for the abolition of slavery” according to the college’s website which states it was also the second college in the nation to grant fouryear liberal arts degrees to women.
42
During its first year, Michigan Central College (as it was then known) had just five students. In March 1845, the Michigan government incorporated the college. By the end of the first year, 25 undergraduate students were enrolled. The college’s first president was Rev. Daniel McBride Graham who led the school from 1844 to 1848. E.B. Fairfield took over as president in 1848 and held the position until 1869, making significant strides at the college including moving its location to Hillsdale to be closer to the railroad and reopening as Hillsdale College on November 7, 1855. Working with fellow professor and preacher Ransom Dunn, Fairfield help found the Republican Party in Jackson and was present at the first Republican Party convention in 1858 where he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Michigan. More than 400 Hillsdale College students fought for the Union in the Civil War according to the school’s website. Among those, four won the Congressional Medal of Honor, three became generals, and many served as regimental commanders. The college’s firm anti-slavery reputation and role in founding the Republican Party led many

notable speakers to visit Hillsdale College during the Civil War including Frederick Douglass and Edward Everett, who also spoke at Gettysburg. Hillsdale College continued to have success after the Civil War—one of less than 20 percent to do so—largely from the efforts of Dunn. On March 20, 1863, the state legislature of Michigan formally legalized the college’s change of name and location. Its original Articles of Association states the college “undertakes its work ‘grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the prevalence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety in the land, and believing that the diffusion of sound learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings,’” as stated on its website. Hillsdale College’s motto “virtus tentamine gaudet,” translates as “strength rejoices in the challenge” and is inscribed on the scroll at the base of the coat of arms. Humane Society kicks off Capital Campaign By Sarah Gray Creating a comfortable environment for dogs and cats before they find their “fur-ever” home is the goal of the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society. Under the leadership of the new shelter manager Jill Richardson, adoptions have increased and the number of animals at the shelter is again at a reasonable number. This summer, the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society (GHHS) is embarking on a major renovation of the 1992 facility. Plans included in this renovation will allow the residents to enjoy new indoor/outdoor kennels, three cat climbing walls, viewing and visiting areas, food preparation areas, and all new flooring. These improvements are designed to minimize stress on all shelter animals. 44
In order to make this dream a reality, GHHS is kicking off a capital campaign with the hopes of raising $450,000 to fund this renovation project. The shelter has already secured $150,000 towards this goal, but the capital campaign is an effort to raise a large amount of money to make some big changes at the shelter. The campaign is not only to make the shelter more esthetically pleasing but also to make the building more functional for the care of the animals themselves.
The campaign is hoping to kick-off at the Humane Society’s annual “FUN” raiser at The Udder Side on June 29. To view pets available for adoption or to donate to the campaign, visit the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society website at www.hillsdalehumanesociety.org or call 517-523-2308. Pictures of featured adoptable animals can also be found at The Udder Side in Jonesville. The board is planning to have an open house at the shelter located at 3881 S. Tripp Road in Osseo following the remodel.
“We are doing this for the benefit of the animals and people of this county,” says Humane Society Board President, Julia Bauer. “It starts here! It is really up to Hillsdale County to support the shelter as its only source of income is donations from our generous community.”
To show your love for animals, consider making a tax-deductible contribution to allow the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society to continue their important mission of rescuing and finding homes for pets throughout Hillsdale County.

ngie McNair is constantly busy. Like any small business owner, she wears many hats that sometimes keep her at work until 11 p.m. on a Friday night. She may be out measuring a customer’s flooring, writing up an estimate or bid, helping unload a truck, scheduling one of her crews for installation, assisting customers in the showroom, or helping plan her daughter’s upcoming wedding. She is doing what she loves and what she has been working toward since her grandfather Francis Smith first bought the business in 1975.
Angie is the third generation in the carpet business and Angie’s daughter Megan, who works for her, is the fourth generation to bring quality carpet and flooring to Hillsdale County and the surrounding areas. Angie owns Country Carpets in Jonesville. 48
BY SARAH GRAY
Since she purchased the business from her dad, Mike Smith, in 2013, it has continued to grow but it was the move to Jonesville in 2018 that brought an uptick in sales she did not see coming. “When we had 80 jobs in the first week, we knew it was going to be a good move,” Angie says. Located at 394 W. Chicago Street (west of downtown Jonesville), Country Carpets offers carpet, vinyl, vinyl planking, ceramic, and laminate flooring. Their large showroom and cutting area allow customers to pick out just what they want and take it home that day. They also install everything they sell. Country Carpets started out as Larry’s Floor Covering. In the 70s, Angie’s grandfather and father Mike Smith were installers at the company before Francis purchased it in 1975. Her dad bought the business in 1981. As Angie
grew up, she watched how the business was run and what made it successful. “My grandpa and I were super close,” she says. “This is what I have known since I was little.” She worked for the business as she grew up and knew someday she wanted to take over. “I went to college for accounting so I could help run the business,” she explains. “I can’t think of anything else I want to do.” The business sells a wide variety of styles and colors in their flooring options. Top brands sold at Country Carpets are Shaw and Mannington. They also offer ceramic for both floors and walls. Currently, a big trend in the flooring industry is vinyl planking. Vinyl planking is better than laminate flooring because it is waterproof and not just water resistant. It comes in strips that click together or glue down and resembles hardwood. It is not only attractive and affordable but extremely durable as well. Along with the large selection of highquality flooring, Country Carpets also offers installation of their products. Angie has three crews that are kept very busy installing carpet, vinyl, ceramic, and laminate throughout the county. And, the installation is as high-quality as the product. Angie’s crews are all seasoned installers including her cousin Tyler Smith, family friend Jeremy Stier, and Dan Brown. Angie’s son Jacob Brown works on one of the crews part-time while he is going to school for criminal justice.
remodeling the interior. “It’s been a lot of work. Jerry is my rock.” The business is now open six days a week and staff have found themselves busy every minute. Angie says she is pleased with the move and the City of Jonesville has been very good to them. She does miss her Reading friends but they still stop by. Country Carpets is centered around family and customer service. They strive to give each customer exactly what they are looking for – whether it is coming in to buy flooring to take home and install yourself or having a crew install it in your home. “As my dad taught me – ‘they are not a customer, they are another friendship you are inviting into the family.’” Angie says their installations come with a five-year labor warranty. She has many stories of members of her crew going above and beyond to help customers by getting the job done and getting it done right. “They become a friend for life,” she says of her customers. “They are not a customer number.” She adds a majority of their customer base is repeat business or family of former customers. “They know what we stand for.” In addition to residential work, Country Carpets supplies flooring for business and commercial jobs including restaurants, schools, and offices. Looking ahead, Angie says she hopes to expand the warehouse behind the building to be able to have more stock on hand for customers. She is also hoping to add a fourth installation crew to meet the high demand. Country Carpets takes pride in their installations and Angie likes to follow her grandfather’s five-year apprenticeship rule before installers are fully trained. “My grandfather always said ‘it’s the final product that will get you repeat business.’” Family also makes up Angie’s busy sales team. Her daughter Megan Brown is her top salesperson, her dad Mike Smith works for her part-time, and her daughter Samantha Brown fills in occasionally as well. Recently Angie hired Jacob’s girlfriend Dorothy Bump to join the sales team. “Hard work runs in the family,” she says. “It’s nice to have my daughter here. She has helped me so much.”
As she has since she started in the business, Angie wants to continue to spend time with her family. “Family is the biggest thing,” she says. Country Carpets is open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 517-995-5070. The business can also be found on Facebook.
Country Carpets had been a part of the Reading community for many years, but when the building they were renting came up for sale last year, Angie said she knew it was time to find not only a bigger space but a space of their own. Their new location has given them 5,000 more square feet to showcase their product, have a designated cutting space, and a large space to hold stock. She credits her husband Jerry McNair and cousin Brian ith Francis “Smitty” Sm Bastien for
The McNairs have been serving the community for four generations.

Keeping It in Stitches
A Woman’s Guide to the Secrets of Shopping
By Diane K Clow Sewist and Long Arm Quilter Eversew Quilted
Okay fellow “Hers” followers, when you get this edition of Simply Hers home, tear this article out of the magazine immediately. It concerns shopping secrets for women. Secrets that have been developed after years of careful, intensive study and a lot of personal research. So, tear it out, read it carefully, and make sure your hubs or significant other (SO) doesn’t get wind of this highly sensitive information. When two friends go shopping, they learn a lot about the skills, pitfalls, and the art of shopping correctly. For the sake of anonymity, we’ll call these two shopping friends “Lucy and Ethel.” Here are the secrets that Jill and I, I mean Lucy and Ethel, have unearthed: Condense all purchases down to one bag. By cramming all shopping purchases into one bag, it appears you have done some “light” shopping. Luckily, clothing purchases can be rolled or wadded up into little balls and a lot of items will fit in one bag. To really condense, use your vacuum sweeper to suck out that space-taking air from the bag first. Buy 2, get 1 free. Always, always go for the multiples deal. Who can’t use three new pairs of shoes? So economical! Even if you re-gift one of the items. Well, maybe not shoes unless you and your daughter wear the same size. Then, maybe. Discounts, coupons, and all that saved money! Sure, sure, your hubs or SO will try to tell you that if you didn’t buy the item to begin with, you would save even more money, blah, blah, blah . . . but, they
50
are just being buzz-kills to deflate your shopping moments of euphoria. Is that new? Take it all home, shove it in the back of the closet or leave it in the trunk of your car and wait a week before wearing it. Then when the question comes, “Is that new?”, you can honestly say, “This? Oh no, I’ve had it for a while, now.” (For the record, a week does constitute “a while.” At least in my book it does.) For those of you who sew or quilt, Jill, I mean Ethel, and I have developed a whole nother list of rules for shopping. For example, if you find some fabric that you like, you should buy a half-yard. If you really like it, buy at least a full yard. If you love it, buy every inch you can afford up to maxing out your credit card! Fabric is always a great investment for that future project that you may or may not ever get to. Also, really incredible fabric is hard to cut up. It’s just too darn pretty! It is important to choose the correct shopping friend to utilize these secrets. The sign of a good shopping friend is one that encourages your shopping. They will say, “Yes, you need to get one in every color.” Or, “You might have a need for another little black dress to go with the other six you own.” Or, “I’ll help you roll those four new shirts into little bitty balls.” So grab a friend, test out the shopping secrets, and always, always, continue Keeping it in Stitches!

Book and Author Reviews
By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers Magazine
I’ve read a couple of books lately that I have enjoyed. Author Sophie Kinsella’s latest Surprise Me was an interesting, fun read. Sylvie and Dan have been happily married for ten years. When they get insurance physicals and their doctor innocently mentions that they are so healthy that they could be together for another 68 years, things change. They begin to wonder, each to themselves, how they could possibly live with another person for that long and not be bored or become boring. Hence, Surprise Me is born. Sounds kinda dumb, but, once again, the talent of the author pulls it off. Surprises are not usually well-received . . . . I also enjoyed best selling author Jennifer Weiner’s Who Do You Love. Rachel and Andy meet one night at eight years of age in a hospital emergency room. Over the next three decades, they will meet again and again, linked by chance, history and their memory of that first, eight-year-old meeting. This author has written several books that, like this one, I think you would enjoy reading! One book I could not get into was Susan Mallery’s California Girls. In the past I have read and finished her stories, but not this one. It is the story of three sisters who are all dumped by their guys at the same time and how they each cope. It should have kept my interest, but I ended up skipping to the ending to get it finished. Maybe it was my mood that day! I am now reading deceased author Robert Parker’s latest, Blood Feud, by Mike Lupica. I really don’t understand this. How can an author write a book if he is no longer alive?!! I guess because his characters are still there, on the written page, and someone has to pitch in to keep them alive? Perhaps I’ve just answered my own question! (Like the wonderful Girl With The Dragon Tatoo trilogy by deceased author Stieg
52
Larsson—his characters were taken over by author David Lagercrantz.) Well, I have read all of author Lupica’s books and can verify he is a class-act author, and I am enjoying his narrative under the guise of Robert Parker’s name. Maybe I should try out David Lagercrantz as well. In May, I wandered into my local Hillsdale pharmacy to purchase a graduation card. I did not remember that “Art Around Town” was taking place that weekend which featured various Hillsdale area artists camped out throughout the city’s businesses displaying their talents. I discovered local artist/author Ruth Kyser seated at a table with her books surrounding her! On past visits to the pharmacy, I had noticed bookshelves displaying authors from the area and had always meant to pick up a book or two. Well, this was my opportunity. I had a nice visit with South Haven, Michigan, native about her themed Christian novels. Her mission statement is “to write stories that entertain, but more importantly educate readers about Jesus and His love for them.” The novels are not too preachy but include Biblical passages when the occasion warrants. If someone is sad, there is a passage. When someone needs strength, there is a passage. When someone is fearful, there is a passage. It was very uplifting and reassuring reading! Her storytelling talent is apparent. I read Kyser’s Oatcakes, Tea, and Me, which turned out to be a love story about two seventy-year-olds brought together by their grandchildren. Seventy sure sounds old, but the fact is, I’m from that generation too, and it was enjoyable reading about an older woman and not some thirtyyear-old’s romantic life! What are you reading? Email me at nancyryan47@gmail.com. See you at the library!

Life is the Berries
What difference could $100 make?
By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker, Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences, Caricature Artist
A teenager hears an illustration at church about congregants who were given $100 to do something for Christ and come back to give a testimony of how God worked. The preacher challenges his flock to do the same. Joanne, a high school senior, takes the $100-challenge and commits to doing something for God. She has a deep burden for her classmates to know the joy of Jesus. Joanne prays and decides to plan a rally for Jesus and invite her friends, classmates, and anyone willing to come. I get a call from this bold senior with $100 in her pocket. Will I be willing to speak at this event? YES! Joanne is planning free ice cream as a draw. I love her desire to reach out to her classmates, so I am all in. I offer to sketch free caricatures as well as to speak. I will do this event pro-bono because her budget is limited but her heart to help others is unlimited. We pray together on the phone in agreement. I am impressed with her passion for God and people, but how many, if any, will show up? I began to pray about this. Joanne has all her church peeps praying over the event. Later, I speak at God’s Choice, a service for people with special needs. After my message, the director has me stand while every single special-needs guest gathers around me, lays hands on me, and prays about the up-coming rally planned by the teen. I feel the love of a big group hug and hear the “AMENS” in garbled prayers pouring over me. There is nothing like a special-needs group bearhug to give me epic encouragement for the rally. Much prayer and support is rolling for this outreach rally, but will the students come?
54
On rally day, all sorts of people file in the gym and are met with Christian music and greetings from volunteers. Teenager Joanne emcees the event with the confidence of a courageous person just doing what God calls. Her talented brother Sam plays his guitar, sings, and sets an uplifting mood for the crowd of around 100. The first speaker shares how God helps him through hard things. The second speaker shares how she read the Bible and reasoned there is a God, and she put her faith in Jesus. Then I share how I had a battle in my mind as a teen, but finally stopped running from God and ran to Jesus who loves me. The Spirit of God fills this gymnasium as we lead them in an opportunity to have their faith in Christ. Many of the teens choose to believe Jesus died for their sins to be forgiven and believe Jesus rose from the dead so they can have life forever with Jesus. This very night, lives are changed. Teens come up to get their ice cream and caricatures drawn. One by one many tell me they decided to become a Christian tonight! We hug. Our eyes fill with water. I give them Bibles for growing in their new-found faith. This is an epic night of life-changing power for many! I see other teens praying with volunteers across the gym. The rally turns to a revival because one teenager said “YES” to a challenge to do something for God. I’m not giving you $100, but I am giving you a valuable opportunity. I challenge YOU, fellow Believers, to pray, asking God to guide you. Will you take my reader challenge to make a difference for God this month?

Have you ever gotten into a conversation and were later sorry you brought the subject up? I had one of those conversations recently with my son, and I’m sorry it ever took place because it was enough to put me right over the edge. By Willie Smith Simply Hers Magazine
I believe I need to put this into context for you. Back in the day, my kids loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Remember them? Dean and I were discussing that recently and I mentioned the “Kung Fu Fighting” song which I thought came out of the TMNT movies. Dean said I was wrong (as usual), however, that meant nothing to me as I started acting out the song by kicking at Dean like I was one of the Ninja Turtles. He just couldn’t let me be the only Turtle in town so he started kicking back. Dean had always wanted to be Raphael because Raphael was the toughest and most deadly of the four. As he pretended to kick me, he said I could be Donatello because Donatello was physically the weakest but by far the smartest. That boy knows how to butter up his momma!! I liked the smart part, but I’ve never thought of myself as being weak so I decided to show him some moves he didn’t know his mother could make. Long story short, his mother couldn’t make the moves she thought she could and ended up on the floor in agony with a groin pull. Apparently, I don’t know my own limitations. While I was on the floor writhing in pain, Dean told me how sorry he was and asked if I’d be okay. (Yeah, sure, just give me a few months!) It’s then my granddaughter who had
56
been watching us decided to show her moves. Now, that girl can kick, but she’s short so she can’t kick high. Add that to the fact that she needs to work on her aim and you have her kicking her dad in a very sensitive area. I think we all know what happened; Dean dropped like a ton of bricks. Unfortunately for me, he dropped right on top of my groin-pulled leg. Both Dean and I were on the floor crying like little girls, but Fenley thought we were just kidding around so she laughed at us until she realized we were really hurt. She then hollered for her mom to come see what was wrong with Dad and Gramma. Kayla, being the good daughter-inlaw that she is, tried to help by getting me off the floor first. Unfortunately for her, I’ve put on about 25 pounds in recent years and most of that is in my butt which is connected to my hip bone which is connected to my . . . well, you don’t need an anatomy lesson. Suffice it to say, Kayla ended up on the floor, too, with a sharp pain in her back. An emergency call went out for three people down due to a fight and one crying little girl. Fenley had called her dad’s friend who is a police officer and asked for help. Because Fenley’s only four, she gets an award next week for remaining calm enough in an emergency to make the call for help. That friend of Dean’s? He decided to take a few pictures of the “pile up” just for fun to show at their church’s small group meeting. I’m so embarrassed! I won’t be able to attend church without a disguise. Needless to say, this was a conversation I wish hadn’t taken place because it nearly put me right over the edge.

3 boys and a transplant By Alicia Curtis, Simply Hers Magazine
always love
Thank you all for the love and prayers after last month’s article. Last weekend, my family and I peacefully laid to rest my grandma AND grandpa. After my grandma passed, my grandpa passed away rather unexpectedly just 23 days later. They say old couples tend to pass from a broken heart, and this was absolutely the case. They were married 68 beautiful years, and for 68 beautiful years, she told him what to do, every second of every day. I talked a lot in my last article about being angry with God and trying to find peace. I can’t say that I’m not angry but going through this phase of life reminded me of a very specific Oscar moment. As I get closer to explaining the events that took place when Oscar received his transplant, there was a night in my head that will forever be in our hearts as one of the most defeating moments of our life. I had been home for almost a week incredibly sick. I was not allowed to be around Oscar. I had taken NyQuil, curled up in bed with my two boys, and fallen sound asleep. Jeremy called me around 1 am to tell me that we had gotten the call. I couldn’t wrap my groggy head around the idea of what he was telling me. When the realization hit, I jumped out of bed and started calling my family. As soon as my boys were picked up, I was on my way to Ann Arbor. I was barely awake, sick, and praying that I could get to the hospital safely and be there for my son.
58
It was the miracle we had been waiting for. When I finally got to the hospital, doctors and nurses were in and out trying to prep him without waking him. He wasn’t allowed to eat, and the second that he was awake we all knew that he wouldn’t be happy. We had a couple of hours until his surgery; Jeremy urged me to lay down and try to get a little bit of sleep so that I could function for the long hours ahead. About an hour later, two doctors walked into our room. I instantly knew that something was not right. They looked defeated. The liver they had for Oscar was not going to work. As soon as they said it, our hearts sank. Our precious baby boy’s fight would have to continue. Someone lost their life that night. Life continued to fight us. I think of the next day in the hospital after finding out that terrible news. We kept the blinds closed, I didn’t get out of bed, the lights stayed off, and it was quiet. I remember thinking in that moment that I had no fight left. My parents came to visit and I had nothing to say. Jeremy and I were defeated. It very much seems that life has cycled back around to events that keep breaking us down. But, just like that night, we kept moving. We regained our fight, and we won. My family will regain our fight, I will regain my fight, and I will win. As the summer is here, enjoy it. Hug your loved ones, smile, laugh, and, most importantly, always love.
Vaping on the rise among teens
By Sarah Gray
The use of e-cigarettes or vaping is on the rise. As the trend has grown in popularity among adults, the interest and use among teens are growing as well. Hillsdale County Undersheriff Carl Albright says the department has seen an increase in youth vaping and using e-cigarettes in the last few years. E-cigarettes are an electronic device that heat liquid usually containing nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals to produce an aerosol. They come in many shapes and sizes. Some look like cigarettes while others can look like cigars, pipes, as well as everyday items like pens or USB flash drives. While e-cigarettes and vaping are illegal for minors in Michigan, use among teens is increasing and it can be difficult for police to enforce. “It is easily accessible and easily concealable,” Albright says of e-cigarettes. Vaping was originally intended to be a less harmful option for adult smokers. However, much of the packaging and flavors have made it enticing to teens and young adults. Parents need to keep a close watch on their child for e-cigarette use or vaping. “It may sound blunt but be a parent,” Albright says. “You need to know what your child is doing. This is not without its health hazards.” He adds that in addition to nicotine, youth can use vaping devices to smoke marijuana.
The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids suggests parents familiarize themselves with what vaping is and what it looks like. Then have a conversation with their child about vaping, ask if they have been exposed to vaping, and the dangers associated with vaping. Signs your child might be vaping E-cigarettes and vaping do not target one age group or demographic of youth. Here are some signs to tell if your child is vaping: Sweet scents. Vaping pods come in many desirable flavors such as bubblegum, fruit, or candy. Instead of smelling tobacco smoke, parents may smell sweet scents, even when your child has nothing in his or her mouth. Nosebleeds. Vaping dries out the nasal passageways. If your child starts having nosebleeds or red cracked skin around the nose, that could be a red flag. Increased thirst. Vaping dries out the mouth and throat. Drinking an abnormal amount of liquids could be a warning sign. Vaper’s tongue. Vaping can decrease flavor perception. If your child wants spicier foods or adds lots of salt to meals, that could be a sign of vaping. Finding unfamiliar USB drives, battery chargers, or spare parts. If your child is carrying around unfamiliar tech-looking devices or there are interesting items in their trash, you may want to ask. Restlessness/Sleepiness. Nicotine can affect sleep patterns. If your child stays up later, sleeps in later, or has difficulty sleeping, nicotine could be the cause.

Perhaps age or mobility issues make it difficult to get in and out of the car, or the weather’s being ugly, or it’s just “one of those days” and you’re worn out. Well, if you stop to fuel up at Pittsford Gas and Tire, they will pump your gas! Now, this isn’t the old-style “full service” that some of us remember so don’t expect them to wash your windshield and check your tire pressure. But, they will handle the fill-up for you, and, these days, that’s pretty special! Pittsford Gas and Tire is located at 4536 1st St. in Pittsford.
glory to god auto repair Regular car maintenance might be necessary, but it’s not much fun. One of the biggest issues is how to get your car in for service and still get to work or back home? Glory to God, located at 146 Lewis St. in Hillsdale, solves this problem with their shuttle and pick up/drop off services. If you can’t wait for the work to be done, they offer free shuttle service. And, you can arrange to have them pick up your vehicle, service it, and bring it back to you—a great option if you have to be at work all day. Imagine going into work knowing that your car will be serviced and returned to your place of business with no inconvenience on your part!

travel! By Melissa McCance
Technology has had a huge impact on travel. We can book flights, hotel rooms, tours, make restaurant reservations, and more from our phones. Online reviews help you avoid sleazy hotels, rip-off attractions, and disappointing meals. The following travel apps have good reviews from users and praise from popular magazines. We recommend reading user reviews before downloading any app to see if it sounds right for you. Also, remember that some are only available for phones; if you’re looking for them on a tablet, be sure you have the search set for phone apps. Airbnb:
This wildly popular avenue for finding places to stay lets you search by location, number of people, desired amenities, and more. You can often book larger accommodations for far less money than you’d pay at a hotel, and user ratings help guide you in making your choices. Available for Android and iOS, free, rated 4.5 to 4.8 out of 5.
App in the Air:
Google Translate:
This app translates between 103 languages. You can type in what needs to be translated, or you can take a photo of printed material and it will translate it. It also translates spoken language in real time. Available for Android and iOS, free, rated 4.4 to 4.5 out of 5.
iExit:
This multi-function app is an air traveler’s best friend. You can check flight information, get real-time flight status updates, look up airport tips, view inairport maps, and maintain a flight profile with all your flights logged. It also works offline. Available for Android and iOS, free (there’s a premium version for a fee), rated 4.4 to 4.6 out of 5.
We’ve all seen those signs along the freeways telling you what’s coming up at the next exit for gas, food, and lodging. The problem is that the signs show you only a few options. This app gives you much more information! It provides a summary of the offerings at the upcoming exits and lets you search for specific businesses and amenities (wi-fi, for example). Available for Android and iOS, free, rated 3.7 to 4.6 out of 5.
Elk Currency Converter:
TripAdvisor:
If you travel out of the country, a currency converter can save you headaches and hassle when dealing with another country’s money. This app detects where you are and automatically picks the correct currency. It loads ten values at once to save time. Available for iOS, free, rated 4 out of 5.
62
Possibly the granddaddy of travel apps, TripAdvisor lets you search locations for accommodations (hotels, B&Bs, vacation rentals), restaurants, things to do, flights, attractions, and more. You can filter your search results quite specifically, which is a big help. For example, when looking for restaurants, you can search by location, type of cuisine, which meal, and price range. Thousands of traveler reviews (often including photos) help you make your choices. Available for Android and iOS, free, rated 4.4 to 4.7 out of 5.

the challenges of Estate Planning that Plague Blended Families Estate planning can be challenging for both “traditional” and “blended” families. Blended family scenarios, however, are virtually endless—a spouse with independent wealth marries a younger new spouse, children from a previous marriage but no children from the current marriage, children from a previous marriage plus children from the new marriage, and more.
By Timothy Dixon Simply Hers Magazine
Although the increased complexity and variety of family structures make estate planning challenging, the need to plan is very important for blended families. A few common challenges experienced by blended families include: One spouse wants to leave all assets to his or her children and wants the other spouse to do the same. While doable, a lopsided situation can occur from this method. If the couple has been married for some time, and if they have acquired joint assets, one of the spouse’s children might get the short end of the stick.
Timothy E. Dixon Licensed Michigan Attorney Law Office of Timothy E. Dixon 27 N. Broad St. Hillsdale, MI 49242 Ph: (517) 437-4070 Fx: (517) 437-4062

One spouse wants to leave the entire estate (or a substantial part of it) to the surviving spouse but also wants to be “fair” to his or her children. Any plan that leaves full decision-making authority for the estate to the surviving spouse could result in a messy situation with the children of the first-to-die spouse. Trusts are available that provide benefits to the surviving spouse while still protecting the deceased spouse’s children and often lessen problems. Infighting among children and stepchildren, while the spouses are still living, is a definite warning sign that comprehensive planning is necessary. Sadly, sibling rivalry often gets heightened upon a parent’s death when emotions are running high. Step-sibling rivalry often increases upon a parent’s death and leads to complicated, troubling fights; thus, planning is very important when sibling rivalry is known or anticipated.
Spouses may disagree about how to divide assets fairly. Often, if spouses talk through their estate planning desires and consult an experienced estate planning attorney, it is possible to develop solutions that achieve each spouse’s goals. Designations of beneficiaries and trustees might leave the impression that parents are playing favorites. Consideration of the children’s perceptions and the potential rivalries within the family during the estate planning process helps ensure equitability as well as the perception of equitability. Spouses should discuss their existing finances, their financial goals, and how they expect their assets to be distributed should one of them become incapacitated or die. Potential estate planning options include: Two individual estate plans. The spouses plan to keep all of their individual assets separate. A prenuptial or postnuptial agreement may accompany this type of planning to ensure understanding and conformance. A single joint estate plan. A single joint estate plan simplifies matters; however, a significant amount of inquiry must be done to avoid problems that could arise. A combination of the two. The spouses create a legal framework to designate some property as separately owned and other property as jointly owned. In these cases, a prenuptial or a postnuptial agreement may be an important part of the plan. No matter what your family structure looks like, your estate plan is about ensuring your property goes to the individuals you want; thus, it is wise to start the estate planning process sooner than later.

Paddle the Day Away
#1
One of the best ways to experience Michigan’s natural beauty is by paddling along a lake’s surface in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). For beginners, the shallow waters of Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City offer the perfect environment to get started while offering spectacular, Northern Michigan scenery. For more adventurous paddling, head to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and see the colorful cliffs, rock arches, and sand dunes from a unique perspective on Lake Superior. To catch a Michigan must-see, take your kayak out to Port Austin and paddle down the Pointe aux Barques trail to see Turnip Rock. There is no better way to explore the water trails than with a paddle in hand.

Surf the Third Coast
Surfing is not limited to the salty waters of the oceans. The Great Lakes have earned the title of being the nation’s “Third Coast,” and Michigan’s surfing community grows each year. Grab your board, zip up your wetsuit, and prepare to catch some impressive, Great Lakes waves. The whole family can learn how to surf, too, with lessons at beaches like St. Joseph and Empire to create memories that last long after returning home from the beach. 68
#3 Hunt for History in Great Lakes Shipwrecks If you are looking for an adventure to take you back in time, you need look no further than the Great Lakes. Once frequently traveled by boats of all kinds for trade, Michigan’s stormy waters have claimed thousands of ships for over a century. Whitefish Point in Paradise was the most traversed region of Lake Superior and is the final resting place of the Edmund Fitzgerald – one of the most notable shipwrecks of all time. Whitefish Point is home to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, and glass-bottomed boat tours are offered throughout the Great Lakes to view shipwrecks from above.

Discover Cascading Waterfalls
Setting Suns to Falling Stars
Michigan has more than 300 waterfalls to explore, and each of them is worth the trek. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is home to the famous, amber-colored Tahquamenon Falls and many more. Munising Falls, where wooden boardwalks lead right up to stunning views of this UP destination, are also close to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Or, take on the backcountry hike to Rock River and Laughing Whitefish Falls. If you can’t make it to the UP, head to Ocqueoc Falls in Rogers City. It’s the only universally-accessible waterfall in the nation.
When the sun begins to set, you will want to have your toes buried in the sand of one of Michigan’s beaches. Whether you are sitting around a fire on Good Harbor Bay or atop a sand dune along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, you will have the chance to take that awe-inspiring picture as the sky turns an array of colors and the sun dips below the shimmering horizon. The beautiful starry skies that follow the sunset should not be missed. Surrounded by the Great Lakes, Michigan’s nights are especially dark and perfect for stargazing. 69

diamond in the ruff By Rachel Yoder
Mobile grooming Service Diamond In The Ruff is a mobile dog grooming service that offers all the amenities of a brick and mortar groomer but shows up in your driveway on your schedule. 76
Taking your dog to the groomer can be a stressful experience not only for your dog but for you as well. There is the drive time, sometimes even multiple trips back and forth delivering and picking up your pooch, cleaning up after your dog gets car sick, or the inevitable shopping trip where you end up spending even more money while you try to kill time in town. For your beloved canine, it’s a trip to an unfamiliar setting, waiting in a loud kennel with other dogs, and being handled by a different person each time. If your dog suffers from anxiety, it can be a pretty rough couple of hours. But, what if there were a convenient solution for both you and your dog? Diamond In The Ruff is a mobile dog grooming service that offers all the amenities of a brick and mortar groomer but shows up in your driveway on your schedule. This means no drive time, no extra spending, and your dog is met on his own turf. After completing her training, Cammie, owner of Diamond In The Ruff, wanted to create one-on-one relationships and build trust with the dogs to give them a better experience. She also wanted to be able to offer flexible hours for her clients and a safe, stress-free and cage-free environment for the dogs. Diamond In The Ruff’s mobile unit is
completely self-sufficient with its own water and electricity! When it’s time for your pet’s appointment, Cammie conveniently arrives with the trailer, greets your dog, and discusses your preferences and the dog’s particular needs. Then, your dog gets pampered with all-natural products from head to toe. So many dogs feel far more relaxed and comfortable in their own driveway; the huge change is marked with better temperament and signs of stress are diminished. Dogs can tell right from the start that Cammie is a dog lover and they warm to her quickly. You can come into the clean, friendly environment with your dog if needed or you can check some tasks off your to-do list. You can even watch cartoons in your pajamas! Services are all-inclusive: ear cleaning, nail trimming, bathing, and clipping are all included in the price, and chances are that if you picked up this magazine at a local business, you are in her travel radius which includes but is not limited to Hillsdale, Hudson, Addison, Morenci, Somerset, and Blissfield. Cammie prides herself on her work and is constantly continuing to educate herself by learning new techniques and styles so she can offer the best possible service to her clients and their best friends. If you would like to change your and your dog’s grooming experience forever with Diamond In The Ruff, call Cammie at 517-3067620 to set up your appointment.

Pet Talk By Melissa McCance
Jenny German and Erin Gilbert of Erin’s Angels Rescue
SNiP NOW
Here kitty, kitty, kitty! Over 850,000 cats and kittens are euthanized each year in U.S. shelters while millions more await adoption. Kittens can become pregnant at four months; one unspayed female can have almost 3,000 descendants by age seven. To address the flood of unwanted kittens and increase the chances of adoption for existing kittens and cats, Jenny German and Erin Gilbert of Erin’s Angels Rescue implemented SNiP Now (Spay-Neuter is Prevention), a low-cost feline spay and neuter program. The program is offered by Erin’s Angel’s Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Quincy, Michigan. Jenny has managed a feral (or community) cat colony for 16 years. Although the cats in her colony have been spayed and neutered, fewer than 5 percent of community cats are. She met Erin through their mutual love for animals and desire to help them. In September 2018, SNiP Now was established under the umbrella of Erin’s Angels Rescue giving this organization a dual purpose. All donated funds

designated to SNiP Now for the spay and neuter program go directly and fully to that use with many cats being sponsored when funds permit. Over the years, Jenny and Erin have gained extensive TNR (trap-neuter- return) experience and have trapped over 1,500 felines for spay/neuter purposes. To use the program for any cats (pets, strays, ferals, barn cats), contact SNiP Now for a voucher which can be used at Fieldstone Veterinary Care, 4355 Homer Rd. in Jonesville (517-437-0171). Once you have the voucher, you call to schedule the surgery. The cost is $46 to spay a female and $31 to neuter a male including a rabies vaccine if needed. For feral cats, Jenny and Erin loan humane traps and provide guidance on what to do and often do a lot of the trapping themselves. The traps have everything the cat needs for safety and comfort. Males are held for 24 hours after surgery and females for 48 hours— longer if there are post-surgical complications. One
important but optional service is to remove the very tip of the left ear which is a known indicator that the cat has been spayed or neutered. An instruction sheet is provided for post-operative care.
Since SNiP Now was formed, 517 cats were spayed/ neutered in the first six months . They have provided services in 32 communities and nine counties. Besides the spay and neuter program, Jenny does TNR workshops to educate people about the need to prevent endless litters and the benefits to the cats if they are spayed or neutered. Community cats are happier, calmer, less prone to certain diseases, and are less likely to go roaming while colonies of community cats actually stabilize in population and co- exist more peacefully. The love and concern Erin and Jenny have for animals shine through when you talk to them, and it’s clear they’ll do whatever they can to make life better for the four-legged residents in our area. Although they have seen progress in people understanding how critically important it is to spay and neuter both companion and feral cats, there’s still work to do. “When you help an animal, you’re dramatically helping a person,” explains Jenny. “We meet a lot of people who know they can’t keep letting their cats have kittens, but they can’t afford the surgery. They’re so happy and relieved once it’s taken care of. You can’t adopt your way out of this problem.” For more information, contact SNiP Now: 517-279-8337 or 517398-4177, or email snipnow@gmail.com. You can follow both programs on Facebook. To make a donation, please specify SNiP Now or Erin’s Angels Rescue, 498 Ridge Rd., Quincy, MI 49082.

Macy
Spayed Female 2 years old Greater Hillsdale Humane Society 3881 Tripp Rd Osseo (517) 523-2308
Macy is such a sweet girl. Someone just dumped her in our drive and she was terrified. We ended up getting one of our other dogs to show her we were not going to hurt her in any way. She then became very trusting and very loving. So loving that she wants to hug everyone she meets. She is a younger girl; we figure she’s around 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old. She will need some training such as not jumping up and maybe a refresher course on being house trained. If you’re looking for a very loving companion, Macy is your girl. She loves to play and love on everyone she meets. Macy does really well on a leash and loves to go for long walks. She seems to have more energy than most of our volunteers who walk her.

Farmhouse is a design style that easily lends itself to simpler times and nostalgic feelings of home. Through vintage treasures (with maybe a family heirloom or two woven in); soft, delicate neutrals; comforting fabrics and textiles; and, of course, plenty of autumnal details, you can create a bygone atmosphere that will make your guests feel truly welcomed and at ease.

she shed
sanctuaries
Move over man cave, the she shed is here to stay! It’s official: the she shed trend is here to stay. Giving man caves everywhere a run for their money, these backyard hideaways are cozy little places for ladies to call their own, whether it be for gardening or just somewhere to curl up with a good book. The point of a she shed is to have a quiet space that allows you to embrace a hobby that’s important to you. If you’re not an avid crafter or gardener, your she shed can simply be used as a quaint place to hang out.

Triple Flavor Sheet Pan Cheesecake Crust: 4 cups graham cracker crumbs or one 14.4-ounce box graham crackers, finely ground 1½ sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted ½ cup sugar ½ teaspoon fine salt Filling: 2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature 1½ cups sugar 4 large eggs 1¼ cups sour cream ¼ cup seedless raspberry jam 1 pint raspberries 1 mango, peeled and thinly sliced ¼ cup strained blueberry jam 1 cup blueberries
www.foodnetwork.com
Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350°. Mix the cracker crumbs with the butter, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl until evenly moistened. Press the crumb mixture into the bottom of a half-sheet pan (15”x18”) pan. Use the back of a measuring cup to smooth out the crumbs. Bake the crust until golden brown, rotating the pan halfway through, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool the pan on a rack, 10 minutes. Lower the oven to 325°. Blend the cream cheese and sugar in a food processor until smooth. Add the eggs and 1 cup sour cream and pulse until well combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with an offset spatula. Bake until the cheesecake is slightly puffed on the edges (the edges will deflate as the cheesecake cools) and just set, rotating the pan halfway through, 40 to 45 minutes. Completely cool the cake in the pan on a rack. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 8 hours or up to overnight. Combine the raspberry jam with 1 to 2 teaspoons water in a small bowl until spreadable but not thin. Spread the jam on the left third of the cheesecake. Top with the raspberries. Spread the remaining ¼ cup sour cream over the middle third of the cheesecake and top with the mango slices. Spread the blueberry jam over the right third of the cheesecake and top with the blueberries. Slice into 24 bars for serving. NOTE: One reviewer chose to omit one of the fruit toppings and substituted a mixture of toasted pecans, melted chocolate, and caramel sauce.

Every Home is a Building Block Everyone can lend a hand to help someone else. Our organization receives no government funds to build or rehab Habitat homes. We rely strictly on volunteers and the generosity of community members like you to build and rehab homes. Many individuals, families, churches, clubs, and youth groups support the work of Habitat in Lenawee County by volunteering at job sites, providing lunches for volunteers, or praying for families and the Habitat mission. Others share their talents by gifting hours to provide skilled labor as a plumber, carpenter, or electrician. Lenawee Habitat homes are built primarily with volunteer labor. Habitat build days are an opportunity to see our mission come to life as we put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, community, and hope. Habitat builds offer volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups on weekends and weekdays, for the novice or the pro. So whether you’re a retired construction worker who isn’t quite ready to hang up the hammer or a busy mom who wants to squeeze in some service on a weekend, we have a place for you—working side-by-side with a future homeowner as they work to build a more secure future.
Other Ways To Serve
There are plenty of ways that you can use your time and skills to assist Habitat for Humanity of Lenawee County as we work toward our mission of building homes, communities and hope. Office Volunteer Volunteer needs in the office include data entry, filing, preparing mailings, and various other administrative tasks. Committee Member There are several committees that work with our staff in support of our mission, including Resource Development, ReStore, Family Services, and Finance.
Saturday build days are a popular way for newcomers to get involved and are also great for those who can only volunteer occasionally. Saturday builds begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
Event Volunteer Special events such as fundraisers and volunteer appreciation events take a lot of work to pull off. Volunteers are an asset in helping plan, set up and staff events.
We are always looking for weekday volunteers. Our weekday builds are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:30 am until 4:30 pm. Weekday builds are also a popular opportunity for volunteer groups.
For questions regarding volunteering, please contact us via email at volunteer@ habitat-lenawee.org.
If you’re ready to build with us, sign up for available opportunities now! If you have any questions, please contact us at volunteer@habitat-lenawee.org. For youth volunteers, please check our age requirements or learn more about our group volunteer opportunities. All volunteers need to complete and sign a waiver of liability form each calendar year.
