Yes, I’m a summer fan, yes, I love it when the hot weather comes, but, yes … this summer went a little overboard. We went from no rain to too much rain and temperatures that made me feel like I’d landed in the Everglades! So, while I’ll still miss the longer days and lightweight clothes, I’m looking forward to NOT being a hot, sweaty mess. Also, enough with power outages, right?!

from escaping the room) increased greatly with the virus and ProMedica took extra time to increase the number of negative pressure rooms in the hospital.

More than 50 percent of the beds in the hospital are negative pressure rooms. Since ProMedica was used as an overflow hospital for the Detroit area hospitals, those rooms were utilized right away.

Dr. Yaroch takes pride in having a state-of-the-art hospital available to the residents of Lenawee County.

Born and raised outside of Chicago, she came the area to practice internal medicine in 1999. In August 2015, she became the president of the hospital but admits the provider side never goes away. She says she will see patients when she is out in the community who thank her for saving their lives and she said she always says the same line: “I was just doing my job.”

ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital opened its doors September 24, 2020 – a challenging time for every hospital. Plans to merge Bixby Hospital in Adrian and Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh had been in the works for several years before the pandemic hit. Construction only slowed the opening date of the building by one month and that time was used to create a hospital that was equipped to handle the current needs of patients.

Dr. Yaroch stated that since the building was under construction when the pandemic hit, contractors were able put other safety measures in place while other hospitals were trying to modify their hospitals to accommodate. At ProMedica, it was there from the day the doors opened. The need for negative pressure rooms (which prevent airborne diseases such as COVID-19

ProMedica offers a wide range of services to Lenawee County, and Dr. Yaroch is committed to making sure every patient receives the care they need. “I have a passion to address the needs of rural health,” she said. “I want to help work for change.

To help those who can’t help themselves.” Having access to the network of doctors in ProMedica’s 12 hospitals allows patients to have a wide variety of specialties available, all within the same network.

Patients can be referred to doctors outside the area but still in the ProMedica network, allowing their full medical history to travel with them easily, thus avoiding any confusion or explaining. “It is greater access to multiple resources,” she said.

At ProMedica Hickman, a high level of care is expected in all areas of the hospital. “What we do, we do well,” Dr. Yaroch said. This includes emergency room care, general surgery, labor and

delivery, robotic surgery, an infusion center, and rehabilitation services among many others. The hospital also plans to add bariatric surgery soon. Rooms in the hospital are designed for the patients’ and staff safety with lift services at each bed.

Security was an essential piece to the new hospital. Not only are additional security measures built into the building, but more security staff has been hired as well.

Cardio and Pulmonary Rehabilitation are located on the first floor with a view that looks out onto the campus. Total Rehab is located outside the hospital but right next door. ProMedica formed a partnership with the YMCA and they build a new facility on the hospital’s campus. Rehabilitation takes place in the building with the hope that once complete, they will continue their health journey by staying physically active with a membership at the Y. Preventative health measures do not take place only in the YMCA, however. ProMedica’s campus is located on an old golf course with an abundance of green space and trails. Dr. Yaroch said she sees lots of families with strollers walking the paths, as well as community members coming expressly to the campus to walk the trails during their lunch hours.

ProMedica looks at all areas of preventative medicine.

Throughout the hospital are many beautiful sculptures and artwork to bring a sense of calm and serenity to not only the patients but the staff as well. The building has no basement and large windows let light shine into every corner. Rooftops are utilized for flower gardens and outside the infusion room is a row of birdfeeders so patients can watch the birds or gaze out into the beautiful green space.

Promoting good physical health is more than just exercise. It also comes with eating well. The campus has a large greenhouse which grows a variety of fresh vegetables to be distributed throughout the county. The Veggie Mobile travels to 32 sites around Lenawee County to give the fresh produce to anyone in the community. Dr. Yaroch said it is important to make sure

people who may not have access get the fresh food they need.

Schools also visit the greenhouse to see how food is grown and the space is utilized as an alternative form of rehabilitation. Patients can work in the raised bed to improve coordination and walk on several different types of ground – dirt, grass or pavement – to simulate the surfaces they will be walking on when they return home. “It’s a prescription for health,” Dr. Yaroch said. “It closes a gap of issues patients struggle with.”

Later this fall, the campus plans to build a boundless playground.

The playground will be for children of all abilities and barrier-free to allow everyone to play side by side. There are also plans to build a medical building on campus, but the hospital wants to maintain the large green space areas for patients and community members.

When Dr. Yaroch is not running a new hospital, she likes to spend time on her family hobby farm/ranch with her husband Dan and son Brady. “I like to get my hands dirty,” she said. She also enjoys riding horses and being in the kitchen cooking with her family.

Although regulations have loosened a bit since the hard lockdown, Dr. Yaroch states the pandemic is not over yet. Masks are still required inside the hospital and there are still visitor restrictions.

She also reminds everyone in the community of the stress and toll this pandemic has taken on all hospital and emergency staff and encourages everyone to say thank you to all medical workers for their tireless efforts during this unprecedented time. “Everyone please keep saying thank you.”

NATURAL Looks for Fall

A simple sun-kissed face with glistening lips is the hottest look for the cool weather. With school and sports, life is busy, so here are some suggestions to achieve an easy, healthy look this fall:

Don’t forget the color if you aren’t naturally sun-kissed. Apply a bronzer with a light shimmer over the apples of your cheeks, across the bridge of your nose, and on your temples to mimic where the sun naturally hits your face.

Want to achieve a more dramatic smoky eye but still keep a lighter look? Pick a long-wearing cream-to-powder eye shadow in a glimmering shade to brighten and define your eyes.

Not comfortable with a makeupfree face? Try tinted moisturizer that evens the skin tone and adds radiance but doesn’t feel heavy.

Avoid dreaded raccoon eyes on those warmer fall days by using water-resistant mascara as a base coat and then seal with clear mascara. Skip mascara on the bottom lid altogether or just use clear to help your eyes stand out while retaining a fresh-faced look.

Apply a moisturizing lip gloss to keep your pucker protected and soft. Use alone for subtle glamor or as an overlay to your favorite shade of lipstick for extra drama.

Finish your look with your favorite jacket and sunglasses and you’re ready to dress up or down for any autumn occasion.

Business Spotlight

F

ew things are as enjoyable and relaxing as sitting down to a delicious, satisfying meal where you can come as you are and know you’ll be welcomed. Whether you’re having a little time to yourself or getting together with a big group of your favorite people, a meal out can be a special time. At Shea’Nanigans Food & Spirits in Hudson, owner Audra Shea doesn’t care if you’re dressed up or down … she just wants you to come in, get comfortable, and have a great meal.

Although this is the first time Audra has owned a restaurant, it’s not her first time being involved in food service. Her family owned a restaurant in the Upper Peninsula and she grew up living above the business and helping out. How she came to own Shea’Nanigans, though, is quite a story. Audra had been working as a supervisor for Hillsdale County’s 911 dispatch service for 18 years when she purchased the business in October 2016. One evening, she explains, “I just didn’t feel right. I knew something was wrong. I woke up that night and my husband Brian woke suddenly, too. I told him that I thought I’d better go to the hospital.”

Sure enough, Audra was having a heart attack.

Not surprisingly, Brian questioned whether this was the time for her to take on running her own restaurant, but Audra saw it differently. “I told him it was the perfect time. I was working a stressful job, he was working a stressful job, and, while I knew from growing up that this would have its own kind of stress, it would be stress under our control. We’d be making our own decisions and running things the way we thought they should be. That makes a huge difference!”

Shea’Nanigans opened under its new name in December 2016 and has been popular with area diners ever since.

When asked about customer favorites, Audra says that all their menu items are popular across the board, adding, “We are pretty famous for our Bloody Marys.” These impressive drinks are available in regular or “fully-loaded” versions. The fully-loaded drink is essentially an appetizer meal and a beverage, featuring multiple skewers of different “food bites.” You can add special zip to your Bloody Mary with flavored vodkas like horseradish, dill pickle, cucumber, or pepper.

Audra takes pride in the fact that almost everything the restaurant serves is house-made. “Some of my vendors comment on how much more work we put in by doing that rather than buying pre-made salads and sides, but it’s important to me. I like being able to add special flavor touches to what we serve here instead of having our food taste like what you can get at a lot of other places.”

Besides the Bloody Marys, the authentic U.P. pasties are another big draw. These meat pies feature beef, potatoes, onions, and carrots in a flaky crust and are served with ketchup or

The unfussy, gravy. Many customers are also fans of the two steak options: an eight-ounce sirloin or a 12-ounce ribeye. Tuesday is, of course, the night for taco specials, and Fridays spotlight a fish fry and Shea’Nanigans take on surf and turf—a steak and shrimp. Prime rib is available on Saturdays, and Sundays, in addition to special prices on the Bloody Marys, the menu includes shaved prime rib sandwiches.

Audra likes being involved in her community and recently sponsored her first poker run. She had nearly 80 bikers participate and donated the proceeds. As the response to the first one was so positive, she is planning to make it a regular event with the funds being donated to different local recipients each time.

Even though the restaurant business can be a challenging one, Audra’s generous, friendly nature make her a natural for owning the kind of unfussy, “everyone welcome” place that is Shea’Nanigans. “I love talking to people, and I love making them happy. I just like feeding people. I also enjoy giving back to the community. I get to know my customers and they become friends. I’ve had people tell me, ‘If you ever sell this place, I’m going to come to your house!’”

One thing you notice as soon as you walk in are the dollar bills fastened to the beams. (Some are higher denominations.) All of them have writing on them, some only a signature while others have more.

Audra said it started spontaneously one night, and now a lot of people add a bill to the everexpanding display. “Just one of those crazy things,” she laughs.

Family is very important to Audra and Brian. “We have seven kids between the two of us and over 20 grandkids.

Most live in the area and help out here regularly. It’s really a family business! I love having them be part of it.”

You can find Shea’Nanigans at 521 S. Meridian Road in Hudson, not far south of Hudson Road. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 to 9; and Friday from 11 to 10.

ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS

Do you know someone whose skin around the neck, armpits, or other skin folds may always appear dark? This may actually be related to an underlying medical condition as opposed to a cleanliness issue. Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition that makes the skin folds appear dark and velvety. While there is no specific treatment for this, treating the underlying medical condition may help.

Individuals who have this condition may have a variety of underlying medical issues.

These issues can include insulin resistance, hormonal disorders, be medication-induced, or, in very rare cases, a lymphoma or cancer.

Individuals who are obese, Native American, or have family members who have acanthosis nigricans are more at risk of developing the skin condition.

This skin condition can be diagnosed by a physical exam. Sometimes, an area of the skin can be biopsied, but this is very rare. The person’s health care professional may want to do blood work or other testing to determine the possible underlying cause.

As previously mentioned, there is no specific treatment or medication to fix the problem.

Weight loss, stopping medications or removal of a tumor that is causing problems can help reduce or eliminate the skin condition.

If you or someone you know have a similar discoloration, I encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider to see if you can work together to determine the underlying issue and best treatment option for you.

be better than me I think I hit the snooze about three extra times that morning. (I say extra because I would normally hit the snooze at least one – ok, twice.) I kept hitting the snooze because I didn’t want the day to begin. I was trying to avoid what I had to do that morning. I really didn’t want to do it. But I’m really not sure why.

Maybe it was because it was a smack in the face way of telling me I am getting older. I don’t mind aging, but when you get those no denying it moments – like no longer getting carded when you buy booze – it is a little hit to the ole ego.

Maybe it was because I knew it was going to be a bit uncomfortable. I mean I was told it was going to be uncomfortable so my mind was preparing for the worst. So I was not looking forward to that. No one likes going into something knowing it’s going to be painful. Plus one person’s pain is another person’s “no big deal.” So, which was it going to be?

Truth be told I was probably just a little scared.

Ladies, don’t be like me.

As we get older, there are certain procedures we need to have done regularly to stay healthy.

This was one of those procedures. I had already been bad and delayed this procedure once. I was supposed have it done a year and a half ago, but there was a little scheduling miscommunication.

Then COVID hit and it was the perfect excuse not to have it done.

Ladies, don’t be like me.

But, then I went to the doctor for a check-up and there was no escaping it. I had to get it done. (I

mean, I could of course choose not to get it done, but that didn’t seem like the right choice or the best example for my kids.) So I scheduled. Then I dreaded. Then I hit snooze three times.

I wasn’t late, but I definitely wasn’t early and if the machine had broken down just before the procedure I wouldn’t have been heartbroken. But alas, everything was running smoothly and all systems were go. So I did it. Now it’s done – for now anyway. I wouldn’t get it done tomorrow, but it wasn’t terrible. All things considered.

And truthfully I am thankful I had it done (even if it was uncomfortable). I’ll tell you why. I’m thankful that I am able to have this procedure done. Not all women can. I am thankful I have access to having this procedure done. Not all women do. I am thankful I live in a community where services such as these are encouraged and there are multiple places I can go to get this procedure. Some women have to travel a long way or fight to have this type of procedure done. I am thankful that if there is something wrong or even the slightest thought that something could be wrong I will know and can have the procedure done again. I am very thankful that I have health insurance to help cover the cost of this procedure so I can get it done without worrying about to pay for it. I know not every woman has that luxury.

I know that I will most likely have to have this procedure on a regular basis for the rest of my life – but that’s ok. Next time I’m sure I won’t whine about it as much. And will probably only hit snooze twice.

No promises, though.

more fabric. Then it hit her: that meant driving all the way to Angola! Having just moved from Battle Creek, Shelly wasn’t yet used to living where there were no dedicated craft stores.

Quality craft supplies come to Coldwater

This event moved her to put out feelers on Facebook asking if people thought Coldwater needed a craft store. Over the next three to four months, the comments poured in and overwhelmingly supported the idea. Unfortunately, when the VanDongens began investigating possible locations, they discovered that it wasn’t financially feasible for them to move forward at that time.

Shelly took a job with the Coldwater Chamber of Commerce and witnessed how the business and economic development staff along with Coldwater Downtown Development were working with local building owners to find ways for new businesses to fill vacant buildings. This helped the VanDongens develop a plan for their own business.

With a lease signing in December 2019, Craft Out Loud! began to take shape. They planned to open in April 2020, but, as happened to so many, the pandemic required a major shift in their agenda. Refusing to be discouraged, they opened the shop with curbside and online service in May and extended to limited capacity in-store shopping in June.

Anyone who crafts with fibers knows that nothing compares to selecting those supplies in person. Not only is there the problem of “iffy” color representation on a computer monitor or smart device, but crafters want to feel the goods. Only by handling the fabric or yarn can you really tell its weight and texture, how it drapes, or how it feels against the skin. And, now that Shelly and Charley VanDongen have opened Craft Out Loud!, crafters in and around Coldwater can do just that!

Life’s Pinnacles

Do you ever think about the pinnacle moments in your life? (Sound of crickets . . . .) Okay, maybe only I do.

Aside from the obvious: first steps, potty training, puberty, high school graduation, first kiss, marriage, birth of children, first family home, grandbabies, etc., there are those moments that stand out in your life. For me, these include the ferry boat trip under the Mighty Mac Bridge, a hot air balloon ride my hubs surprised me with for my birthday, and job advancements I experienced in my career.

Recently, I would include in those “moments” an auction we attended that had a collection of Singer Featherweight sewing machines. Now, most of you wouldn’t see this as a highlight in your lives, but for me, this was like striking oil, winning the lottery, and dropping 15 pounds all at one time! The collection was made up of twenty-four beautiful Featherweights that included two white machines and two of the more elusive 222 free-arm machines.

(Only slightly over 100,000 of the 222s were manufactured, making them more of a “unicorn.”) I was calm and focused. I never lost eye contact with the auctioneer. Suffice it to say that thirteen of these little beauties, including the white ones and the 222s, came home to Mama. Pinnacle. Moment.

Now let me tell you about a recent trip to an area mall. This was my first real shopping trip (groceries excluded) in over eighteen months. As I stood in line at the flagship store, a customer came running through the front door exclaiming, “There’s a guy out there with a gun!” The manager quickly locked the front doors and the doors leading to the mall were secured. We all moved to the windowless rear of the store. One role I had in my working career at the bank was as a security officer. I never thought my “Active Shooter Training” would be of use when out shopping for new bras. Happily, everyone was safe without incident. Pinnacle. Moment.

On a happier note, I was given a lead to purchase a collection of Sunflower Yellow Fiestaware dishes. Over 150 pieces of it. This gracious lady had each piece carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in extra strong plastic totes which was great, because Fiesta weighs a ton! So, kind of a Pinnacle. Moment.

Lately I’ve heard a lot about people losing focus of what they’re doing and end up doing everything but what they started. I don’t understand how that happens; it’s just a matter of discipline. It’s enough to put me over the edge.

What’s wrong with people? Where is their discipline? Take a typical day in my life. I go into the bedroom after my shower to make the bed. I see a glass on the nightstand and decide to take it into the kitchen where it belongs before coming back to finish making the bed. Discipline. I go to the kitchen to put the glass in the sink. Dang! What a mess. Who left all this stuff here? It’ll only take a moment to clean it up and then I’ll get right back to that bed.

I clean the sink, get everything in the dishwasher and head back to the bedroom to finish what I started. Discipline. Wait, what is that? Who put the dog’s leash on the desk? I’ll just run that back to the laundry room where it belongs. It’ll only take a moment and then I’ll get right back to that bed. Discipline.

I put the dog leash away then head back to the bedroom to finish making the bed. Discipline. I see a pile of sheets as I leave the laundry room and figure I may as well take them with me and put them in the linen closet on my way to the bedroom. No harm in that. Discipline. As I put the sheets away, I see someone left a pile of mail on a shelf. Guess I’ll take it to the office. It’ll only take a moment and then I can get right back to that bed. Discipline.

As I head into the office, I see a puzzle I wanted to put together so I decide I’ll take it to the table in the dining room so it’s ready to put together when I’m done with the bed. Discipline. I get to the dining room with the puzzle in hand and remember the puzzle board is in the living room under the couch so I head to the living room to get it. I’ll just take it all to the dining room now before I finish what I started. Discipline.

When I get to the dining room, I realize I need a break from all this discipline business. I take a moment to get the puzzle ready so I can start it when I’m done with the bed. I get the puzzle all set up and ready to put together, but before I head to the bedroom, I think I’d better go to the “potty” so I don’t have to stop in the middle of making the bed. Discipline.

When I’m in the bathroom, I find the magazine article I started yesterday so I decide to finish it before I head off to make the bed. My husband comes home as I finish the article and he’s ready to eat. I might as well eat with him before I make the bed. After dinner he offers to help me put the puzzle together. Three hours later when we’re done with the puzzle he disappears. I finally find him asleep in the unmade bed. How dare he? I was right in the middle of making that bed. It appears I may have somehow lost my discipline between the dining room and the bedroom. I’m telling you, discipline is not all it’s cracked up to be.

It’s enough to put me over the edge.

I have just learned that August 9 was National Book Lovers Day! I should have celebrated with all of my book-loving friends! We could have met and each brought a favorite book and swapped! (I think that might be called a “book club” though....)

In the midst of a beautiful summertime, it is more difficult to stay indoors and read.

However, somehow I manage to do just that! (Although it’s usually evenings while “watching” a Tiger game with my hubby.)

Lately, when I go to the library, I seem to be looking up my favorite authors’ newest releases. I have also been reading a slew of Margaret Truman’s murder mysteries, recommended to me in the last issue by a fellow reader and friend, Jeannie.

I did pick up one author new to me, Elisabeth Hyde, as the cover and title attracted me. It is entitled Go Ask Fannie, with a picture of a lovely old Cape Cod-style house in a field surrounded by sunflowers. The “Fannie” in the title refers to The Fannie Farmer Cookbook. In the story, when the kids would ask their mom what’s for dinner, she would respond “go ask Fannie.” That’s cute, but to me this book was kind of an unsettling story about three siblings returning home to their 81-year-old dad for a weekend visit.

The father grows sunflowers and has a small dairy farm, and his kids are getting concerned that he is doing too much for his age. As the story unfolds with a flashback sequence, they are all affected by the tragic, sudden deaths of their mom and brother in a car accident several years earlier. Their personalities and life choices have been shaped from that day forward and not in the best ways. They are good people but have lost direction and

closeness through failure to communicate.

When their dad has a mini-stroke and is hospitalized, truths start to appear about the night their mother and brother perished. A lot of self-reflections, and that made me wistful.

One of my favorite authors, whom I recommended in this magazine a few years ago, is Catherine Alliott. She is a British author and over time I have ordered several of her stories through Amazon. Her books bring me lots of chuckles and laughs, and her most recent, Behind Closed Doors, does that, too.

However, it also tackles the most serious subject of spousal abuse, and that is not funny. This story takes a lot of twists and turns but ends on a very positive note as we watch our heroine grow in confidence and love from her family. That’s the way I like it!

I have a couple of books recommended to me by my other Jeannie friend arriving soon, which I will write about in the next issue. They are entitled The Kabul Beauty School and The Lobster Chronicles, Life on A Very Small Island.

I am looking forward to meeting a couple of new authors!

A retired man quietly delivers a large flowerpot planted with lettuce, radishes, and chives to the recent widow’s backdoor step. The plants flourish in the sunlight and watering. The widow steps out the back door at lunchtime, cuts a few leaves for her sandwich. Her mini-vegetable garden feels like a hug with each tasting. She smiles.

Love does.

A niece visits her aunt diagnosed with fourth-stage cancer. Eyes open wide as she grasps the depth of the situation. The niece stays. She halts her life back home for months. She holds her aunt as she dry heaves, wipes the beaded sweat off her brow, and sings her soothing gospel songs at three in the morning. Her aunt writhes in pain as she bonds to her caretaker niece. She’s wrapped in love on her journey to Jesus.

Love does.

A widow scribbles “elevator fund” on the front of the envelope. She folds a one-dollar bill and slides it inside. She wobbles down the path through the woods to the church. She grasps the railing with both hands as she struggles up the eight steps to

the church sanctuary. Stopping to pant twice, she reaches the top finally. During the service, she claps off beat, sings praises with exuberance, and hollers “Amens.” She drops the sacrificial $1 in the offering plate each week … for years.

Love does.

A mother once ran marathons. Now she shuffles with her walker. Frailty kicks in. Her short-term memory gapes with holes. Her family moves her close, prepares her meals, plays countless games of Scrabble, drives her for outings, sends letters, and calls often. They laugh out loud at the funny story she tells them … for the seventh time today. Every repeated story deserves a kind response from her listeners. The family adores and wraps around their momma every staggering step of her Alzheimer’s.

Love does.

The neighbor knocks on the door at 8 pm as he does every … single … night. With a grunt, he hoists the husband from his wheelchair. Blowing a puff of air, he lowers him gently to the bathtub. After drying and dressing him painstakingly in pajamas, he staggers as he lifts him to his bed. This walk across the street repeats each evening. The grateful wife’s watery eyes and hand on her heart etch in his mind.

Why You Should Buy a Fixer Upper (or Why Not) We’re just going to level with you right from the start - not every home on the market is a dream home. Not every house is fully updated, or has even been updated once since it was built in 1975.

Every house has its flaws and certainly will not fit everybody’s taste. There is a big difference, however, between repainting a few rooms and pulling up carpet to a full on gut job.

The number one pro for just about everyone when it comes to buying a house that needs some work is price. Fixer upper homes typically cost less than turnkey homes. On average, a home that needs some repairs can cost about eight percent less than a move-in ready home. That may not sound like much, but for a home that sells for $150,000, eight percent can equal $12,000. A lower list price also means a lower down payment which can help with the renovation budget.

Location is another big motivator for potential buyers. Highly desirable neighborhoods and school districts are reasons people look for homes in one area over another.

Others like the idea of making the house their own and specially choose a house that needs work. Customizing a home to fit your taste allows buyers to get exactly what they want without building a home from the ground up.

Yes, buyers may be saving money on the front end with a lower purchase price and down payment, but don’t forget to factor in the cost of renovations. Before buying a fixer upper sit down and decide what improvements need to be made and how much those improvements are going to cost.

Budgeting for a project or projects can be difficult, however. Hiring a professional can help, however, it is almost always more expensive than doing the work yourself. Plus, there are always the unexpected costs that can blow up any renovation budget.

How and when did you become so fascinated with weather?

I was five years old, maybe six! I just LOVED snow, probably due to always wanting a snow day to play with my friends from morning to night. I remember watching the weather channel 24/7.

How do you create forecasts?

There are several weather models that update every 12 hours up to every hour. There are a few well-known ones, and I also have a couple experimental and in-house models that use history, low pressure placement, and pressure. History almost always repeats itself in every aspect of life; weather is no different. With that said, it’s impossible to be 100% correct, but I am 85% correct.

In weather, that’s a pretty big accomplishment.

I truly just have a gift from God. I believe it is due to the fact I LOVE weather, especially snow!

Nothing is more amazing to me than when I see it coming down at 1”-3” per hour. (Unless, of course, you’re driving in it.)

How much time do you typically invest per week in tracking, forecasting, and sharing?

Some weeks, a couple of hours. Some weeks, up to 100 hours. Truly, it all depends on Mother Nature!

What do you enjoy most about doing this?

Being right as much as possible, of course! A few things: Since I have started, I’ve had so many parents reach out and tell me how their kids are the same way—just fascinated with weather and especially snow! Makes me smile and think back … I love it.

Why and when did you start the SE Michigan SnowFreaks Facebook page?

I’ve done it for years, but a couple years before I did FB, I started really getting into it again. I just noticed how good I was at it. The Super Bowl storm we had several years ago was my “big break,” if you want to call it that. I had around 5,000 followers. I said the entire time that many areas would see 12”-20+” when many others were calling for two to four inches, seven at the most. So many were laughing at me, saying to delete the page and what a joke it was. Well, as they say, after that the rest is history, as I was spot on!

When did you decide to go on a subscription basis?

When it started taking time away from my family. One week I literally didn’t sleep for three days! I put in around 90 hours watching all the different models and trends. Also, I do have another full-time career. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would become as big as it has. This is still my passion which is why I always run weather-related contests and give back the way I do!

How many people subscribe across all levels?

It ranges from 7,000 to 13,000. Highest totals are always November through March (snow). I have a lot of positive feedback on it.

Two Men From You Might Not Know About . .

These stories often feature women from Southern Michigan who have made their mark on the world, but there are also a number of men from the area who went on to do remarkable things. Here are two men from Adrian who did just that.

Norman Bel Geddes Frank Navin

Frank Navin was born in Adrian in 1871, one of nine children of Irish immigrants. Frank is best known for being owner of the Detroit Tigers from 1919-1935, during which time the Tigers won their first World Series.

An accountant and lawyer by trade, Navin was brought on as the Tigers bookkeeper in 1902 as well as having the additional titles of secretary, treasurer, business manager, farm director, chief ticket seller and advertising manager among others. He was also a scout and was known for a having a good eye for talent. His notable recruits included Ty Cobb and Hughie Jennings.

He was instrumental in the building of the new stadium for the Tigers in 1912 which was named “Navin’s Field” (later changed to Tiger Stadium in 1961).

The stadium has since been torn down and the Tigers now play at Comerica Park.

In 1919, Navin became half-owner of the Tigers following the death of then owner Bill Yawkey. Baseball was Navin’s passion having said, “No game is cleaner, healthier, or more scientific. [Baseball brings] thousands of devotees out into the open air and the sunshine and distracts them from every contaminating influence.”

The Depression led to hard times for the Tigers, but Navin’s business sense and love of the game kept him persevering. He signed player-manager Mickey Cochrane who led the Tigers to two pennant wins in 1934 and 1935 as well as a world championship in 1935.

Unfortunately, Navin’s World Series victory happiness was short lived. On November 13, 1935, just six weeks after the Tigers’ victory, Navin died of an apparent heart attack while horseback riding at the Detroit Riding and Hunt Club. He was 65.

Norman Bel Geddes is a famous designer for the early 20th century who left a lasting impression on the design world.

He was born Norman Melancton Geddes in Adrian in 1893.

The Bel comes from his wife Helen Belle Schneider whom he married in 1916. The two combined their names to produce Bel Geddes.

Bel Geddes began his career as a set designer for a theater in Los Angeles and as a scene designer for an opera house in New York. He also directed, produced, and was a costume designer for many shows during his early career. He name became more commercially known when he opened an industrial-design studio in 1927. There he created a range of everyday products including cocktail shakers, radio cabinets, and inkwells.

Bel Geddes was futuristic in his designs creating such oddities as a teardrop-shaped car, a “House of Tomorrow,” and, in 1929, designing “Airliner Number 4,” a nine-deck amphibian airliner that had many unusual features including a gymnasium and an orchestra. He may be best known for the General Motors Futurama building and exhibit at the 19391940 World’s Fair in New York.

Designs created by Bel Geddes became iconic. He was known for his sleek design, and his forward thinking made the design styles that became popular in the thirties possible. He wrote two books, “Horizons” and “Magic Motorways.” The latter spoke of advancements in highway design which helped lead to the interstate highway system.

Bel Geddes died in 1958. He was named to the American Theater Hall of Fame.

Many people live far back on their property and have long winding driveways. Paving all that driveway would be challenging and often homeowners with long driveways such as these opt for a dirt driveway.

It also can be colored to match the exterior of your home or create an accent to your outdoor landscaping.

Make that smooth clean surface for your kids to shoot hoops on or express their artistic ability through chalk with concrete, then finish off the remainder of your long driveway to the street with crushed concrete.

Homeowners with large pieces of property often like to set their homes far off the road to keep down noise and then enjoy the solitude of their property. A crushed concrete driveway up to a poured concrete finish is a win-win.

Crushed concrete is a cost effective option when driveways are long. It does require more maintenance, at least yearly, if not more depending on rain and snow, but holes and areas that wash away during downpours can easily be raked or shoveled into place.

Snow removal can be a bit tricker, but having the poured concrete near the home will ensure that the area stays snow free and the melting snow stays away from the foundation of your home. Crushed concrete driveways also drain well which can be especially important if you live in a lower lying area of the property.

PET TALK Fall is on the horizon and dog owners who live anywhere but in the middle of the concrete jungle are probably concerned they might have a dog tick problem. Ticks—deer ticks, dog ticks, and other varieties—can spread disease to both you and your pet. But what are the other animal health concerns you need to worry about in the fall? Here are some important things to consider when thinking about fall pet safety: Ticks: Although tick nymphs peak in the spring months, the number of adult deer ticks is higher in the fall than it is during any other part of the year. Deer ticks are the ticks that are responsible for spreading Lyme disease—which can be just as much of a danger for you as it is for your pet. If you’re worried you might have a tick problem, there are several things you can do to help. A tick and flea preventative will help keep the bugs away, but if you don’t choose to use them, consider paying more attention to your lawn care. Ticks prefer to live in long grass, so giving your lawn a good manicure and keeping your pets confined can help keep your tick problem under control.

These and other tips can help your pet avoid “hot spots” and other skin irritations that can contribute to poor health.

Temperature: Fall is a tough time for pet care because the temperature is so variable.

Depending on where you live, you may need to worry about anything from heatstroke to frostbite. In particular, you’ll always want to make certain that your dog or cat has enough water. Just because the weather has gotten cooler doesn’t mean that your pet doesn’t still need a lot to drink.

Mulled Cider INGREDIENT 1 gallon fresh apple cider 2 tablespoons mulling spices or 1 teaspoon allspice, 2 anise stars, 1/2 teaspoon peppercorns, and 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves and 2 cinnamon sticks 1 orange, sliced thin with seeds removed DIRECTIONS

Pour the fresh apple cider into the slow cooker.

Place the mulling spices in a spice ball. If making your own mixture, you can break the cinnamon sticks to add to the ball or place them in the cider separately. Place the orange slices in the cider.

Cook on low for 4 hours. Remove the spice ball and cinnamon sticks. You can leave the orange slices for decoration if desired.

This issue our recipes focus on fall produce. Sometimes it’s the star of the recipe and sometimes it’s an accent. Enjoy these ideas for preparing some in-season fruits and vegetables!

Butternut Squash Steaks with Brown Butter–Sage Sauce

This dish can be a hearty vegetarian main course or, cut into smaller pieces, served as a side.

INGREDIENTS 1 large butternut squash (about 3 lb.), preferably one with a long thick neck 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces 6 sage leaves or ½ teaspoon dried sage 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly-ground pepper DIRECTIONS Cut the neck off of squash; reserve base for another use. Trim the stem off the neck then peel. Resting neck on cut base, cut in half lengthwise, creating two lobes. Trim off outer rounded side of each piece to create two 3/4”-thick steaks (about 6 oz. per steak); you can reserve the trimmed-off sides for another use.

Heat oil in a large heavy skillet over medium.

Cook squash steaks, turning every 3 minutes, until deeply browned on both sides and fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Add butter, sage, and garlic to skillet, tilt pan toward you so that butter pools on one side and use a large spoon to baste steaks continually with butter. Cook, basting, until butter is no longer bubbling, smells nutty, and is beginning to brown, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice; season with salt and pepper.

Chicken Waldorf Salad SALAD INGREDIENTS 1 bunch red kale, stems removed and torn into small pieces 1 pound chicken breast, grilled with salt and pepper 1 cup candied walnuts (use plain walnuts if you prefer) 2-3 celery ribs, roughly chopped 1 cup grapes, cut in half 1 apple, cut into cubes DRESSING INGREDIENTS ¾ cup mayonnaise ¼ cup olive oil 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar (best substitute for this is apple cider vinegar) 2 tablespoons lemon juice Zest of 1 lemon ¼ teaspoon freshly-ground pepper 2 tablespoons honey DIRECTIONS In a small bowl, mix together dressing ingredients until smooth.

Cinnamon Baked Pears INGREDIENTS 4 ripe pears ½ cup melted butter 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats ½ cup finely-chopped almonds ⅓ cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon kosher salt DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400°. Halve pears and scoop out some of the center to fit the oatmeal crumble. Brush insides of pears with 2 tablespoons of the melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

In a medium bowl, combine oats, almonds, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Pour remaining melted butter into bowl and combine until fully coated. Spoon into pear halves. Bake until pears are soft, 35 to 40 minutes. Serve warm. Can be topped with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired. www.delish.com

Pumpkin Bread with Nutella Swirl INGREDIENTS ½ cup butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin 1½ cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground cloves ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup Nutella, warmed DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°.

Grease four 5¾x3x2 inch loaf pans.

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in eggs and pumpkin. Combine the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, ginger, cloves and salt; gradually beat into pumpkin mixture until blended.

Transfer ½ cup of batter to each prepared pan. Drizzle 1 tablespoon Nutella over batter.

Repeat layers; cut through batter with a knife to swirl. Bake 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Ultrasounds: Coming soon! Fundraising is complete! We hope to offer this service at no cost in early Autumn, 2021 and provide an amazing opportunity to save babies and affirm life.

Numbers: According to our 2019 records, we saw 419 clients. We provided 5,111 diapers and 4,267 items of clothing. Thirty-nine parents attended parenting classes, 303 clients came to our center for material assistance. Fifty-eight potential parents came in for no-cost pregnancy tests. Helping Hands volunteers logged in 1,846 hours.
