I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the holidays are here—the stores have had Christmas stuff on display for the last six or eight weeks!
I’m trying not to be a crazy grandma, but I’m sure all you other grandmothers understand how hard it is not to overbuy for my Nixon. They make too much cute stuff! He’s grown so much that I’m truly treasuring his baby days.
Welcome to our yearly double issue. One side is our regular publication and the other focuses on the holidays. We try to share things that will help you during this busy time. Our cover article highlights a great local store and updates you on the many new items available at Birdie’s & Howell.
We’re also acquainting you with Lorrie Miller, a local attorney specializing in estate planning and elder law. We hope the article will get you thinking about some of the important decisions that need to be made in planning for the future.
I want to end this year with a heartfelt thanks to our advertisers! I know I thank them every issue, but don’t think the repetition makes the appreciation less sincere. Their steady support makes the magazine possible. Please patronize local retailers, professionals, and service providers whenever you can.
Finally . . . my staff. Every issue is a little bit of a miracle because there’s so much to do and we aren’t a big group! Their dedication, determination, and talent make it happen over and over, and I’m proud to have them as colleagues and friends.
However you’re celebrating this season, we wish you happy and safe holidays!

Remember to Always Be Kind and Pay it Forward
I had the pleasure of Crystal Dane as my agent. Crystal went above and beyond! She made my home buying a wonderful experience. I will always recommend her to family and friends.

Tamarah treats you like family. Buying a house is one of the biggest milestones of your life. Tamarah was there for my first house purchase, my first house sold, and she will be there for the rest. I could not have asked for a better realtor. She’s honest, trustworthy, and always puts her clients first.
Tim was professional and very timely. He even went the extra mile to make a special trip 30 minutes away to drop off papers before signing. Sherri is also very knowledgeable on getting needed information from banks for closing. They are a great team!

I started my home buying journey not knowing what to do, nor where to start. I called Rene’ and she has been by my side from day 1. She gave my husband and I ideas on who to contact for a mortgage loan that might work best for us and we did not have to look back from there. Rene’ answered every call or text when I had questions or if we wanted to go see a new listing same day. Rene’ handled everything we needed to help us get into the home of our dreams. She is now helping us sell our prior home and we know there are no worries because Rene’ has our back.

With the holiday season comes holiday shopping as we try to find something special for everyone on our list. Hillsdale is blessed with a number of wonderful, independent retail shops including one that’s become a favorite in the year it’s been open: Birdie’s & Howell. We introduced our readers to the fine assortment of quality merchandise at this lovely store last January, and we want to share what’s new!
With a year under her belt, owner Monique Sarles is still full of excitement and enthusiasm for her venture into the retail world.
“If I’d really known just how much work it was going to be, I might not have done it, but I’ve learned a lot and I love it. I really do. We moved recently and I took four days off from the store. When I walked back in here, I felt like I was home. Everything was in place and where I wanted it to be!”
One important addition to the store is the custom framing service that started last February and has been very popular. The staff can help customers with their mat and frame choices or let them design the framing themselves, whichever they prefer. Monique has a program that shows what the finished piece will look like. This allows fine-tuning the selections before the final decision is made. “My favorite is when people bring in sentimental pieces. I love those because of the stories behind them,” says Monique.
New items in the foods section include a variety of infused salts, dip mixes, and other seasoning blends from s.a.l.t. sisters that feature mineral-rich, unrefined sea salts and house-made, small batch production for freshness and purity. Want dessert without the fuss? Try molly & you mug cakes or muffins that are avail able in several varieties. Two fun options for drinks are cocktail infusions from One Part Co. and drink
bombs by MyDrinkBomb®. The infusions perfectly flavor your spirit of choice, simplifying cock tail mixing. For the drink bombs, drop one in any sparkling water and then add the liquor. Great drinks without the hassle!
Monique is delighted to add the enewton jewelry line to the store, pieces that she describes as “jew elry you can live in.” The goldfilled jewelry is water-resistant and can be worn while swim ming or showering, although you should avoid contact with harsh chemicals. Pendants and ear rings by Whisper offer fun, styl ish options at reasonable prices. Another new jewelry line is ArtLifting from DEMDACO which champions artists im pacted by housing insecurity and disability.
The kitchenware section has grown significantly during the year. Beatriz Ball is a full line of luxury melamine that looks like china but can be used safely for outdoor entertaining. Hester & Cook produces high-end paper products including some great placemats printed with coloring book designs to help keep rest less little guests busy until din ner is ready. Looking for some thing really special? Consider the beautiful Italian ceramic kitch enware from Vietri. Monique can order these pieces and have them shipped directly to the re cipient to save you time.
One section where Monique has to restrain herself when ordering is the baby and children’s depart ment. “Everything is so cute—it’s really hard not to buy every thing!” she says. Besides more of everything for baby including a lovely assortment of plush toys, she has added developmental toys for toddlers. These are qual ity playthings that should last through more than one child.
Although the time for outdoor gardening is past, the shop car ries some nice planters for your houseplants and lanterns that work as accents indoors as well as out. Candles remain very pop ular and Monique stocks Chan dler and Kalamazoo brands.
If you need a practical, waterresistant tote or bag that will hold a lot, look no further than the Scout bags at Birdie’s & How ell. These bags come in a variety of sizes and configurations and sport great, colorful patterns. In the bag department, Monique was very pleased to add HOBO handcrafted leather goods to her inventory. These luxury bags would make a special gift for any woman you know. (Or yourself, for that matter!)
Monique is planning a Christ mas Open House on Thursday, November 10, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm, and there’s a special twist! She has partnered with the local nonprofit Love INC to help them raise funds by making the first hour a private shopping event. Tickets are $30 per person, all of which will go to Love INC. The open house will feature live music, hors d’oeuvres, and great sales. On Tuesday, November 29, stop by for the one-year anni versary celebration. Either event would be the ideal time to put together your wish list to help people shopping for you.
Birdie’s & Howell is located at 28 N. Howell Street. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturdays from 9 to 4. You can reach them by phone at 517-964-2473 or by messag ing through the Facebook page. Street parking is available in front of the store or you can park in the city lot behind the build ing and enter through the back door.

STRATEGIZING
Fitness For The Holidays
Christmas?! It’s Christmas?!?! Where did all the time go? It’s been quite the ride this year as far as the weather is concerned. I mean, when you read this, it could be 70! Hahaha, probably not!
So, with holidays coming it’s time to have the talk. You know about how hard it is to keep your workout regimen going in general, let alone falling off the wagon! What I’d like to say here is what do your goals mean to you? I mean, are they so easily put to the back burner?
But, it isn’t that simple is it? Who doesn’t like to get together with family and friends throughout the season? However, your goals are YOUR GOALS so it does mean something to you. Just because you’re going to several parties where there’s alcohol doesn’t mean you need to drink at all of them. Same for food, you don’t need to overindulge just because it’s there for you to take.
There’s no reason you can’t drink water at the parties, it isn’t going to prevent you from having a good time. As for the food, eat something shortly before going to help control those cravings. Also, eat a small portion and maybe take a small plate to go to enjoy later. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you absolutely can’t drink or your goals will vanish. I’m just saying you don’t need to do it repeatedly. And, I love holiday food!! But, portion control will allow you to enjoy it many more times and could even fit into plan!
Now let’s look at workouts. People say, “I’m too busy to get to the gym.” Well, I say that’s just not possible. However, a couple tricks to maintain throughout the holiday season will help you
immensely! For example, work out early in the day, before work if possible or even on lunch (not replacing nutrition, of course). That way, as things come up, you’re levelheaded to handle them for one, but also you can manipulate your schedule and not miss a workout because of it.
Another way is to reduce volume a bit. Not volume per workout, but the number of sessions per week. If you’re currently on a 4-day split, consider a 3-day. Personally, with my clients I’d mash chest and shoulders together into one session. Something else to consider along these lines is to hit some days at the gym and hit one or two at home if possible. I don’t like that idea as much, because for me it’s too easy to get distracted with real world stuff and this time of year …. But, some are good about it and something is better than nothing in this scenario.
In the end it’s about balance, not a lot different than any other time of the year. It’s just a bit more demand on your time. Balance is good and finding it for your family and friends isn’t a bad thing. But, taking care of yourself is a priority to you as well, and your family and friends understand that. That’s why it’s balance.
Have an amazing holiday season my friends! I wish all the best for all of you this season as I do all the other seasons as well. Talk to you again next year. My year ahead looks pretty incredible—I can only hope you feel the same about yours. As is with the content of this entire article, it’s about MINDSET! Get it in line with your amazing life and keep winning!

They’re Moving!
This wonderful local resource for organic foods, ingredi ents, and quality supplements has some exciting news: THEY’RE MOVING! Although the team at Hillsdale Natural Grocery has done an amazing job of packing a lot of inven tory into a fairly small space, the staff is enjoying getting settled in much larger quarters. Formerly located at 31 N. Broad Street, the store is moving to 30 N. Howell Street, site of the former Nash Drugs. Plans are to open in the new location during the first or second week of November. Be sure to stop by and visit when they do.

Even though it’s fun watching people open the gifts we choose for them, let’s face it . . . the process of shopping is NOT always a good time! This is especially true if you have a long list. Breathe Free Duct Cleaning
Written by Melissa McCanceTaking your home to the
Even if we don’t like cleaning, we all like having a clean, fresh home. Did you know there’s a local service that can make a substantial difference not only in the cleanliness of your house but also the air quality and the efficiency of your HVAC system? Ryan Griffiths, owner of Breathe Free Duct Cleaning and co-owner of Griffiths Mechanical, can remove the dust, lint, pet hair, and other debris from your air ducts and find any problems with airflow within your system.
“There are so many health benefits to having the ducts cleaned,” explains Ryan. “Removal of allergens and improving indoor air quality are probably the two biggest. It’s especially important living in Michigan where we’re coming up on the season of being indoors. Also, people think the dirt in the ducts won’t be disturbed, but the fact is that anything can jar it loose—a kid bouncing a ball in the house or someone walking heavily—then it’s airborne and blows out into the house.”
One thing Ryan wants people to know is that this is not just a duct-cleaning company. His 22 years of experience in the HVAC business combined with what this cleaning system reveals regarding efficiency problems within the home’s system enables him to clean the ducts, diagnose any problems within the system, explain the issues, and—if the homeowner wishes—get the problems fixed.
The equipment Ryan uses will pull up to 12,000 cubic feet of air per minute, and, if they aren’t getting suction from a register, they know that something’s wrong. It could be a blockage or a disconnect in that particular run, something that a typical inspection of the system wouldn’t reveal.
One addition to a home’s HVAC system that Ryan strongly recommends is the REME HALO®Zero UV light. This low-voltage unit is attached to your furnace’s air supply, providing wholehouse air purification. The light’s technology breaks down mold spores, bacteria, viruses, and odors. It also passes an ionic charge to all dust, dander, pollen, and allergens in the air which causes them to stick together meaning more of them are caught by your furnace filter so there’s less particulate matter in the air.
Ryan was motivated in part to begin the duct cleaning business because of the current cost of HVAC systems.
“A system that used to be $3,000 to $4,000 is now easily $6,000. I hated the thought of someone spending all that money to install a new unit that would be connected to dirty, clogged ducts. They wouldn’t be getting everything they paid for. If we clean the ducts, then they get the full benefit of the new furnace or new air conditioner. That way everything’s right.”
The Breathe Free crew includes two employees who are trained specifically for this service. A duct cleaning begins with a brief tour of your home to locate all registers and air returns. Then the registers are masked off and cleaning is done from one location. Compressed air is introduced into the ducts and special cleaning equipment loosens the debris from the duct walls. Suction then draws everything out of the ducts. All register covers are taken outdoors and disinfected. Ryan guarantees the work 100%. If you discover something was overlooked or anything isn’t quite right, he and his team will return to take care of it.
If you’re interested in finding out more or wish to schedule a duct cleaning, contact Ryan at 517-297-9909. You can also go online to www.breathefreeduct.com and follow them on Facebook.

Ryan & Jenilee GriffithsPLANTAR FASCIITIS
Do you ever wake up in the morning, go to step out of bed, and have sharp, stabbing pain running through the sole of your foot? It may cause you to limp at first, but, after several steps, it may start to improve. This type of pain is classic in a condition known as plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes along the bottom of the foot. The purpose of this band of tissue is to absorb shock and support the foot. Over time with increased stress or tension on the foot, tearing of fibers and inflammation can occur leading to pain and a taut feeling across the sole of the foot.
When seeing a healthcare provider, plantar fasciitis is often diagnosed based on history and exam findings. Your provider will check areas of tenderness and may order imaging to rule out other causes of the pain. But, typically, imaging is not necessary for the diagnosis.
Once diagnosed, treatment can be started. Full recovery can take several months. For treatment, we usually start with a conservative approach. Often icing, stretching, and taking anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or Aleve are the first things suggested to start for treatment. It is also usually recommended to avoid or minimize activities that increase inflammation such as long-distance running, dancing, or standing for extended periods of time.
Sometimes physical therapy can be beneficial to aid in stretching the area. Other times, splints or orthotics are recommended. If these things do not improve symptoms, the treatment plan can become more aggressive. Additional options such as steroid injections, shockwave, or ultrasound treatment modalities can be used. In worst case scenarios, surgery may be needed.
There are a few things you can do to help minimize your risk of developing plantar fasciitis or improve mild symptoms. Stretching on a regular basis would be one. Wearing good supportive shoes, especially if you are on your feet for long periods of time, would be another. Even changing shoes often can be beneficial too. Maintaining a healthy weight to decrease the stress load on the foot is also helpful. If you are having some of these symptoms, see your healthcare provider for further evaluation before the pain becomes too disabling. Early treatment can be beneficial and keep you actively engaged in things you may enjoy, such as running. Or at least make those first few steps in the morning less painful.
Winter can be long in Michigan and being stuck inside can become overwhelming. This makes it the perfect time to make over your Michigan basement into a comfortable, stylish hangout for the whole family. Here are four quick ideas for updating your basement space.
1. Flooring
Installing a new floor or updating the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have basic concrete flooring which is cold year-round. Flooring options are endless — hardwood, laminate, cork, and carpet flooring all add warmth to a basement. Play mats are great for kid areas with their soft yet washable surfaces.
2. Paint
Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting entertainment oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. When considering the paint, think about which color will complement your existing furniture. To add drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall.
3. Soundproofing
Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get together, or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution for maximizing your basement’s peace, quiet, and privacy.
4. Accessorizing
Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions to enhance or change your basement’s look and feel immediately. Pot lights can modernize while artwork and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your room and keep your eye out for staple pieces that will make it feel like an entirely new space.
Ask the Doctor: Tips for preventing Winter Injuries
With winter comes the obvious: cold, snow, traffic, shoveling, etc. But, did you know that winter is also synonymous with injuries?
The good news is that nearly all of these injuries are preventable! Get ready to enjoy the season by following our guide to preventing winter injuries.
Slipping on Ice/Snow
Whether it’s day or night, ice can be difficult to see and what looks like water pooled on the pavement can actually be a sheet of ice. You could step off the curb and right onto a slippery ice patch. When this happens, severe injury can occur if you fall to the ground. You may be able to recover and only skid briefly, but, even if you don’t end up falling, you can wrench your back or experience another kind of injury in your attempt to recover.
Anyone is in danger of injuring themselves by falling or slipping on ice or snow, but seniors are especially at risk. In fact, according to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of injury among older Americans, and winter weather conditions only exacerbate that concern.
How to Prevent Slip and Fall Injuries
• Wear proper footwear made for icy and snowy conditions.
• Keep your stride shorter and avoid long steps.
• Slow things down — try not to rush or run outdoors.
• Keep de-icer or sand on hand for slippery walkways.
• In case of injury, always have your cell phone handy.
• If you need to do outdoor chores, take your time.
Muscle Strain from Shoveling Snow
One of the most injury-inducing winter activities is shoveling snow. Combine the fact that it’s a physically demanding activity with bitter cold temperatures and it’s a recipe for injury.
How to Prevent Shoveling Injuries
Shoveling doesn’t need to end in injury; make sure to follow our simple tips for a safe winter:
• Warm-Up Stretch – Focus on the legs, back, shoulders, and biceps as they are the most common muscle strains.
• Understand Your Limits – In order to get the job done quicker, we sometimes overfill the shovel and it causes trouble. Start small and work your way up slowly. Once you’ve reached your limit, understand it and don’t overfill.
• Take Your Time – When we rush shoveling, we risk injury in a few different ways. First of all, cracks in the pavement can cause the shovel to stop suddenly, causing injury to the hands/wrist. Slower shoveling scoops will minimize this impact. When we shovel quickly we tend to “throw” the snow. This can cause excess stress on your shoulder/back/ legs causing a muscle strain. Remember, lift with your legs!
• Proper Attire – Dress warmly and make sure your body is covered (especially your lower back). Check the tread of your boots to make sure they have sufficient grip. Wear a winter hat and gloves.
If you suffer a winter injury, it’s important to first assess the severity level. Sometimes muscle injuries can be treated with ibuprofen and by applying ice or a heating pad or taking a warm bath. However, more severe injuries will need to be treated immediately by a professional.

TURN THE PAGE Book and Author Reviews
By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers MagazineAnother new season has arrived, and another set of suggested reads is presented for your consideration!
Kristin Higgins’ publication Out of the Clear Blue Sky introduces us to Lillie Silva, happily married, or so she thought. At 45 she is thrown over for a thirty-something home wrecker. Lillie is a Portuguese woman with a self-described fiery temperament if driven by such an untenable situation. Her plots of revenge on her husband are a bit far-fetched but amusing. It is the story of how she copes with her new situation and ultimately finds happiness without the adulterer.
In Nora Roberts’ latest novel, Nightwork, our leading man Harry Booth began stealing at age nine to keep a roof over his sick mother’s head. Fast-forward to adulthood and his hobby has become his profession. Things change for him in college when he meets Miranda Emerson and falls in love. However, his past won’t let go of him and he must sacrifice his love for Miranda to keep her safe ... or must he?
My friend Carolyn recommends Laura Dave’s recent The Last Thing He Told Me. This is a mystery thriller. Heroine Hannah’s husband has (alliteration alert!) disappeared. And the last thing he did was leave a note saying “protect her.” The story revolves around Hannah keeping his daughter safe until she can discover why he disappeared. This author has written many good books.
Darcy Gomez is a local author from Hudson and has written her first children’s book, Fluffy Fun Adventures. It is educational with illustrations, and she says it is a fun read. It is being narrated by Celeste, a Black Jersey Giant hen! Celeste brings the reader into the daily issues of living in a flock. Harry is the very attentive rooster who
takes his job seriously and does it very well. The other chickens have definite personalities of their own which come out in each of the six chapters.
“Feathery fun facts” appear at the end of each. Darcy has recently taken up the hobby of raising chickens, thus the children’s book! It’s available on Amazon, and you can read her favorable reviews on her Facebook page. Good luck, Darcy!
Fellow readers Kathy and Betty are in a book club and recommend The One In A Million Boy by Monica Wood. It’s the story of 104-year-old Ona Vitkus, a young boy scout helping her with jobs, and how he ultimately ends up changing her life. I will say no more, as the reviews of this book suggest you read it with no further descriptions. It is worth the read!
Another fellow reader Grigor suggests One Damn Thing After Another by William Barr. It is a memoir and provides a candid account of Barr’s historic tenures serving two vastly different presidents: George H.W. Bush and Donald Trump. He takes readers behind the scenes during seminal moments of the 1990s and thirty years later he faced an unrelenting barrage of issues during the Trump presidency.
A book for young adults that my grandson, Chase, is enjoying is Grenade by New York Times bestselling author Alan Gratz. Grenade tells the story of a young boy who discovers the reality of war and the meaning of courage during the American invasion of the island of Okinawa during World War II. He’s been told that Americans are cruel monsters, yet in prison he is treated kindly and his wounds tended. Ultimately, he learns that Americans and Japanese are both monsters when in war, but when not fighting, they are both kind.

HAIR!
Have you ever answered a question you thought was relatively harmless only to have it bite you in the … well, you get the idea. I had a question put to me just last week and now I have a big ol’ chunk gone from my … well, you know. I’m telling you, it’s enough to put me over the edge.
I’ve had the same hairstyle since birth practically, but definitely long before I left Michigan. Since I moved to Florida, I’ve had several ladies cut my hair, but I just couldn’t find anybody that cut it as good as my former stylist, Sally, who knew my hair and all its quirks. And then I found Kiish. She’s cut hair for years here in Florida, she’s really sweet, accommodating, and most importantly, everyone coming out of her chair looked amazing. I scheduled an appointment right away.
As I sat in her chair, I told her I’d like a new style, something updated, maybe even a little edgy. That’s when Kiish asked that relatively harmless question, “Do you trust me?” And what did I say? Of course I said, “Yes, I trust you.” Was that the butt-biter moment you ask? You bet it was. I should have paid attention to my spidey senses that said, wait, what are you thinking? But, no, I just closed my eyes and didn’t open them until she said, “Ta-da!”
OH! MY!! GOODNESS!!! I didn’t look bad until I got a closer look and saw my dead mother! I have never wanted to look like my mom. She had beautiful gray hair, but she kept her hair boyishly short. My mother could be mean and
ornery and she looked every bit of that with a dash of crazy thrown in. I don’t have beautiful gray hair and I did not want to look like a boy or a crazed 20-something wannabe, but when I looked in the mirror, I saw a boy and my “edgy” look was just my cowlicks standing up anywhere they wanted.
What had I done? Even if I liked this new, edgy look, there was no way I could make my hair look like that ever again. My cowlicks don’t have rhyme or reason, they do as they want when they want with or without any or all hair products. I convinced myself to smile and tell Kiish I loved it, but then cried when I got into the car.
I drove home and asked my husband what he thought. He said it looked good. Even though it’s really short, sticking up all over, and I look like my mother, I asked. I knew then the lies had started. How did I know? Mainly because whenever I walked into a room where he was, he’d say, “Hey, Ruby.” As we all know, my name is NOT Ruby. It is, however, my dead mother’s name, God rest her soul.
Why, oh, why did I answer that relatively simple question by saying yes. Why didn’t I wait until Kiish had cut my hair a few times and knew where my cowlicks were hidden and how they would shoot up out of nowhere whenever they felt like it. I plan on talking to Kiish about a different hairstyle at my next appointment. It’ll be a while though. My hair has to grow and I have to tame those cowlicks again. I’m telling you, it’s enough to put me over the edge.
Legal Matters
By Kimm BurgerNavigating the holidays when there are two households involved can get pretty hairy at times. In most cases, the Courts have set out specific holiday parenting times that each party is entitled to and that does make things seem to run a little smoother.
Each county has a “standard parenting time schedule” which specifically outlines what holidays each parent is awarded. In Hillsdale County, one parent will get from the date the children are released from school until Christmas morning at 10:00 a.m. and the other parent will then get from Christmas morning at 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on the Sunday before the children are to return to school.
However, Branch County only divides Christmas Eve and Christmas day; that being one parent gets from December 23 at 6:00 p.m. until Christmas Eve at 8:00 p.m. and the other parent will receive from Christmas Eve at 8:00 p.m. until Christmas day at 8:00 p.m. Then, regular parenting time begins. Because of the differences in what is considered standard, each parent should carefully review their parenting time order so they know when they are to receive the children.
If you do not have a court order, it is best to see if you can work something out with the other parent that will allow both parents the opportunity to experience the Christmas and New Year’s holidays with the children. This can be anything you agree to, even if the time isn’t equally divided.
The problem that typically arises is when parents don’t agree on who should have the children during specific periods of holiday time. Without an order that directs what time each parent is allowed, controversy always ensues and feelings get hurt. Remember, this is not about the parents, it is about the children and their ability to see both parents during this time . . . leave your personal feelings aside.
One question that is routinely asked is if one parent can get the police involved to help them get their children. The answer is yes, you can call. However, law enforcement will not remove a child from one parent, nor will they force a child to go. Again, this causes a great deal of frustration between the parents and can cause further strife within the relationship.
It is always advisable to have a custody and parenting time order in place. That way, each parent understands their rights and responsibilities as it relates to the children and it also provides the children with the stability they need to flourish.
Let the children be children and let them enjoy two
does that hurt?

It can rock our world when someone we love passes away before we’re ready to comprehend what’s happening. We’ve all experienced moments like that. We take for granted how fragile life really is, but a sudden loss brings it home. That is why it can be so beneficial for your loved ones when funeral plans are arranged ahead of time. This gives those closest to you the room to grieve without the stress of planning and preparing. It also allows you the opportunity to create your own unique celebration of life with your family by your side and can help them feel connected to you in life and death. No matter what life throws your way, pre-planning will be a blessing to your dear ones.
Pet Talk
Travel safely with your pet by car.
When making travel decisions, choose what is safest and most comfortable for your pet. For instance, unless you’ll be able to spend a lot of time with your dog, they’ll probably be happier at home than tagging along on your trip. As a rule, cats are almost always better off in their own home.
But if you have decided it’s best to bring your pet along, follow our tips for a safe and low-stress trip.
Dogs shouldn’t roam freely. The safest way for your dog to travel in the car is in a crate that has been anchored to the vehicle using a seat belt or other secure means. Dog restraints or seat belts are useful for preventing your dog from roaming around the car and being a distraction to the driver, but they haven’t been reliably shown to protect dogs during a crash.
Cats belong in carriers. Most cats aren’t comfortable traveling in cars, so for their safety as well as yours, keep them in a carrier. It’s important to restrain these carriers in the car so that they don’t bounce around and hurt your cat. Do this by securing a seat belt around the front of the carrier.
Leave the front seat for humans. Keep your pet in the back seat of the car. If an airbag deploys while your pet is in the passenger seat (even in a crate), it might injure your pet.
Keep those heads inside! Dogs and cats should always be kept safely inside the car. Pets who are allowed to stick their heads out the window of moving vehicles can be injured by particles of debris or made sick by having cold air forced into their lungs. Never transport a pet in the back of an open pickup truck.
Give your pet plenty of rest stops. Stop frequently to allow your pet to exercise and eliminate. But never permit your pet to leave the car without a collar, ID tag and leash.
Bring along a human buddy. Whenever possible, share the driving and pet care-taking duties with a friend or family member. You’ll be able to get food or use the facilities at rest stops knowing that someone you trust is keeping a close eye on your pets.
Don’t ever leave your pet alone in a car. A year-round hazard is the unspoken invitation you issue to pet (and car) thieves any time you leave your pet alone in a car.

The Hillsdale County Agricultural Society is excited to announce a new fundraising opportunity. We will be selling personalized paver bricks. The bricks will be placed around the “re-purposed” Information Booth. Research on the history of that building tells us that the Judges Stand was built in 1890, which makes it 130 years old. Although harness racing was discontinued at the track, the Board still felt it was important to save the building if possible. That led to it’s move from the infield to the north end of the fairgrounds. It is now used as the Information Booth during fair week. The selection of that space to place the pavers will complete the look of that area, set the bricks in an area nearby what will be the new restrooms that the pavers will help pay for.

The Importance OF A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM
By Mary Playford Playford Real EstateThere are many types and brands of home security systems available on the market today. It is important for each homeowner to look into several different systems to find the right find for their home. Currently, 36 million homes in the U.S. have security sys tems in place. While that number sounds like a lot, it actually comes out to less than one in three homes - only 30 percent of res idential properties have a security system, according to security.org.
ing the equipment, monthly fees can equal less than a dollar a day - depending on the system.
to increase, home burglaries nationwide are decreasing. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, “in 2019, there were an estimated 1,117,696 burglaries, a decrease of 9.5 percent when compared with 2018 data. The number of burglaries decreased 29.6 percent when compared with 2015 data and was down 48.5 percent when compared with the 2010 estimate.” In other words, home security systems work!
The cost may seem prohibitive for some homeowners to purchase a home security system, but after the initial cost of purchas
Professionals are not needed to install security devices either. There are a number of systems that can be installed easily by the homeowner. So, no matter where you live - in town or in the country, in a house, apartment or condo, there is no reason not to have a home security system.
Home security systems do more than walk the walk - they talk the talk! As the number of homes with security systems continues
It is important to protect your property and having a home security system will deter many thieves and vandals who want to take your belongings or wreak havoc in your home.
A home security system not only keeps your home and belongings safe, but it keeps you safe as well. Systems send out alerts when a burglar may be trying to get into your home which not only keeps your belongings safe, but you and your family as well!
Security systems allow homeowners to check in on their home when they are away on vacation as well. No matter where you are, you can remotely monitor the safety and security of your home.
Having a home security system not only increases your security, it also can increase
your overall home’s value. Prospective buyers find homes with an installed surveil lance system more attractive and will pay a higher asking price.
Protect yourself, your belongings and your loved ones with a home security system and in the process increase the value of your property overall.
