BRIDES Boy, what a year! We’ve all learned to live with our “new normal” but life fortunately continues. Couples fall in love and weddings are being planned. This publication is our nod to normal, a few moments to forget the virus and all of the changes that it has inflicted into our lives and simply enjoy the excitement and anticipation that planning a wedding brings. This issue is packed with articles and planning guides to help any bride create the wedding of her dreams. We show you how to stock a full bar at your wedding and give you expert advice from local vendors to smooth out problems before you encounter them. Having your wedding in our area but wanting something a little different for your venue? Be sure to check out the area spots that are highlighted in our story on local and unique venues. Even a simple, informal wedding requires some advance thought and preparation. Thinking through the details and scheduling can help prevent what should be a happy day from turning into one of tears and disappointment. We have included an easy

A Sensible Schedule To
WEDDING WEIGHT LOSS

Congratulations! You have set the date and your big day is only a few short months away. Not that we are assuming you need to lose a few pounds, but if you have the urge to give it a try, we’ve come up with a few diet and exercise tips to help you along the way. By following these steps, it is possible to look and feel more beautiful on your wedding day. First, it is important to decide how much weight you would like to lose before the wedding. From there, you can break down weekly and monthly goals to be sure you reach your target weight. And, before you begin any sort of fitness/diet program, we encourage you to consult your doctor or healthcare provider. SIX MONTHS ‘TIL THE BIG DAY: We know six months seems like a long way out to start dieting, but it is actually right on schedule if you are planning on losing more than 10 pounds. Start incorporating more green vegetables, beans, low-fat dairy, and nuts into your diet. It is also time to step away from processed carbs, sugary foods, foods containing trans fats, and to be more conscious of portion sizes. Yes, we acknowledge this is easier said than done, but every time you choose the right foods, you take a step in the right direction. On the exercise front, incorporate three, 45-minute workouts a week with 20 minutes being cardio and the rest strength training. If this is a weak area for you, consider getting in touch with a personal trainer such as PRIME Fitness in Hillsdale. They even offer a Bridal Bootcamp that will have you toned and trim for your wedding day.

THREE MONTHS ‘TIL THE BIG DAY: Time to evaluate your progress and make adjustments accordingly. If you are not meeting your short-term goals, consider cutting a food vice from your diet until the wedding. Think of it as an investment in your big day. If exercising is becoming a chore, try rounding up some of the members of your wedding party; having a support group will make you work even harder! ONE MONTH ‘TIL THE BIG DAY: Life is going to get very busy. Now is the time to be sure you do not skip meals. With all of the wedding prep going on, it will be very easy to allow yourself to grab a bag of chips or a fast food burger. In just a few short weeks, you can sabotage everything you have worked hard to accomplish. Also, don’t blow off your exercise because things are so hectic. If you can’t find the time for an entire workout, make time for a short yet high-intensity workout to keep that toned body. ONE WEEK ‘TIL THE BIG DAY: Time’s up. You can stop fretting and just enjoy the moment. Resist the urge to fast to try to lose a few more pounds. Drastic fasting can impact your mood severely, making you stressed and unable to enjoy your wedding day. Besides, by now you have had your final fitting and you wouldn’t want your dress to be anything less than a perfect fit. On the flip side of that coin, don’t do any binge eating, either; it is too late for you to have your dress let out! THE BIG DAY: Congratulations! Your day has finally arrived. Go and enjoy your healthy new body that you have worked so hard to create. Remember, no matter what, you are beautiful!

You have 13 years of teaching behind you but don’t think you want to continue in that field. You aren’t sure what you want to do or what direction your life should take. So, what’s the solution? Well, if you’re Dana Hicks . . . you grow flowers!
Yes, that is the story of how Black Dog Meadows Flower Farm got its start. Dana had been a gardener since she was very young and often put together bouquets as a child. “We got here and I asked myself, ‘What will I do? What do I love?’” After she decided to grow flowers, she found herself wondering if that was, in her words, “even a thing.” Online research showed her that there’s a huge community of supportive flower growers out there running successful farms and design studios and providing flowers for multiple markets. “The initial investment wasn’t much. We bought a big rototiller and a lot of seeds. That was it,” Dana explains. This was the summer of 2019, and her original intent was only to grow flowers and sell to wholesalers and area florists. As time went on, people asked her if she’d put together arrangements for them and she discovered an innate knack for floral design.

“I love creating things. I love nature and it inspires me,” says Dana. “As my confidence with floral design grew, I began booking weddings in 2020 and I’m currently booking for 2021. My focus is turning a bride’s vision into her ‘dream come true.’ As a grower, I have a unique knowledge of local and seasonal elements that will be gorgeous while staying budget-conscious. I love using unique textures, colors, and unassuming florals and greenery. My garden-style arrangements showcase a more natural, unstructured, and airy style. In essence, I like taking the ordinary and making it beautiful.”
One thing Dana wants people to know is that you don’t have to be planning a huge wedding to book her services. “I’m happy to do the very small weddings that the pandemic has made necessary. Even if all you need is a bouquet for the bride and a boutonnière for the groom, I’d love to work with you.” Dana is passionate about using sustainable growing practices and promoting flower growing in this country. “Most people don’t realize that only 10%-15% of flowers used here are USA-grown. Of course, I do buy varieties of flowers I don’t grow—like roses—when a client requests them, but I am most inspired by using what I grow and what I forage.” Anyone who loves having fresh flowers around should consider subscribing to Dana’s CSA (community supported agriculture) program. For a flat fee, CSA members receive 15 weeks of flowers. The arrangements are available from early July until the first frost
which usually occurs in early October. The hard frost in September 2020 killed off everything in her gardens and required purchasing some blooms to complete the subscriptions, but everyone got their flowers! COUPLES MAKE when Stocking The Reception Bar
The reception is time to toast your new marriage, and many of your guests will show up expecting to get their drink on. Here are six mistakes to avoid when putting together your reception bar. CHOOSING QUANTITY OVER QUALITY. A well-stocked bar doesn’t mean you must have every type of alcohol. This is especially true if you don’t have the money for top-shelf liquor. If this is the case, offer up basic necessities—vodka and gin, for instance—so you can buy the best, and then ditch anything else that isn’t in your budget. IGNORING THE CROWD. Are most of your guests beer drinkers? If so, then focus on offering a variety of different brews instead of wasting money on hard liquor, fine wines and signature cocktails that most people won’t touch. FORGETTING ABOUT NON-DRINKERS. Not everyone is going to partake in alcohol, so be sure to have plenty of other options on hand. Think a virgin signature cocktail, artisanal soda, flavored iced tea and the like. OFFERING TOO MANY SIGNATURE COCKTAILS. Sure, they’re fun to name, create and can look super pretty being served at the wedding, but they lose their luster if you offer too many options. Stick with one or two at the reception. BRINGING YOUR OWN. In some cases, you can save money by supplying your own alcohol. But in others, it could wind up costing you more in the end--especially if your venue charges a corking fee for every bottle of wine they open during your reception. NOT ORDERING ENOUGH. Don’t try to cut corners by ordering less alcohol--you don’t want to risk running out halfway through the reception. Have your catering manager and bartender guide you in how much you will need according to the guest list. 22

The Desjarlais Aesthetic Center By Melissa McCance
Helping brides be their most beautiful!
When people describe brides, you often hear words like “glowing,” “radiant,” and, of course, “beautiful.” If there is any day in her life when a woman wants to look her absolute, utter best, it’s her wedding day. Besides finding the perfect gown, many brides book consultation appointments with a hair stylist, makeup artist, and nail technician well in advance of the big day to do a trial run and get her look perfected ahead of time. In addition to these essentials, brides and their attendants can also opt for aesthetic treatments that raise the beauty bar to a whole new level. Anyone looking to explore these treatment options would do well to consult with Dr. Lawrence Desjarlais of the Desjarlais Cosmetic Center in Adrian. The center opened in 2017 and is an extension of Dr. Desjarlais’ medical dermatology practice. Recognizing that patients receiving cosmetic services might prefer a less-clinical setting than a regular medical office, Dr. Desjarlais renovated the space below his medical office and moved the aesthetic portion of his practice into the spa-like facility. He provides state-of-the-art cosmetic services including wrinkle reduction treatments, medical grade skincare, injectable fillers, and laser treatments for the face and body. All procedures are performed by the doctor or by an experienced laser technician trained by Dr. Desjarlais. One important point—brides need not fear that their grooms won’t recognize them coming down the aisle! The goal is “a better you, not a different you,” says Dr. Desjarlais. There will be no pressure to have more done than the bride or attendants want. He explains his approach in this way: “A cosmetic services patient is still a patient, and I take that seriously. I give the patient all the options. The aim is a journey towards healthy, beautiful skin, not just fixing a wrinkle here and there.” The science of cosmetic procedures has changed dramatically over the last 20 years, and, unlike the early CO2 resurfacing lasers, many current treatments offer outstanding results with little or no down time for recovery. The approval of Botox for cosmetic use in 2002 opened a new era in aesthetic dermatology treatments followed by Restylane in 2005 which furthered a physician’s ability to treat lines, lift cheeks, and create fuller, natural-looking lips. BBL (broadband light) treatments can help make skin firmer and even out tone and texture. Silk peels, chemical peels, and dermabrasion clear away dead skin cells, remove impurities, and result in skin that is softer, clearer, and has that highly-desired, dewy look.

The SilkPeel is a fantastic treatment to get before any big event! It is a hydrofacial that cleans out the pores, brightens the skin, plumps you up to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and gives your lips a boost which lasts up to 72 hours. Are there any package prices for brides/bridal parties? We customize packages, so people can call the office to discuss options. Which services, if any, require a pre-treatment consultation? Fillers, Botox, and SilkPeel treatments can be done without a formal consult. Dr. Desjarlais will still consult with you prior to treatment, but it’s a quick consult so you can get your treatment the same day.
For the bridal party—usually a younger crowd—the concept of prejuvenation is important. Preventing signs of aging is a new concept in aesthetics. Low energy lasers (BBL and Ultra in our practice) are defining the path forward. And, limited use of Botox and fillers like Restylane and Juvederm is appropriate. For those who haven’t enjoyed the benefits of pre-juvenation, the ongoing tradition of rejuvenation continues. Area Vendors Have a Lot to Offer! By Melissa McCance & Andi Foust The professionalism and expertise of your vendors will have a huge impact on your special day. Getting a jump on the selection process is particularly important for brides living in rural areas where there are fewer vendors available. Discuss your wedding budget with your fiancé and set limits for each area. Then, contact vendors to find out who’s available for your date. Schedule consultations to see if your personalities mesh and if the vendor’s style works with yours. Get everything in writing—don’t make assumptions about any details—and ask for some client referrals. Finally, don’t be afraid to negotiate! We talked with recent bride Andi Foust (married August 2019) to get her take on the vendors she chose. Here are her reviews of some area vendors.

Gavin and I love to dance at weddings so we wanted to make sure we had a DJ who would listen to our song requests and play what we knew would get our friends and family on the dance floor all night long. That’s just what we got when we booked Pro DJs. They did a great job blending our requested songs and their suggested songs into a playlist that fit our taste.
Olivia’s was the perfect place for us to host our rehearsal dinner. They helped us choose a menu that all of our guests loved and they even helped us make some lastminute accommodations when we had more people attend than we had in our original count. I really appreciated their flexibility.

Your wedding day is a celebration with loved ones, so it’s only natural to want to include those friends or relatives who’ve passed away before you get to say “I do.” Your inclusion of a deceased relative can be as subtle as a symbolic white rose in your bouquet or as public as a moment of silence at the ceremony, and we rounded up a few more ways below. 7 natural alternatives to wedding confetti
Throwing rice or confetti on your wedding day can be a tradition that lets all of your guests celebrate with you as you leave the ceremony as the brand new husband and wife. While grains of rice made way for paper confetti, many couples are now looking for more eco-friendly options that don’t necessarily involve so much mess. Bio-degradable paper options, bubbles, sparklers, and ribbon wands are all popular alternatives for couples; however, they’re still artificially made. So if you’re looking at having a more natural substitute for confetti options at your weddings, here are a few ideas. 36
LAVENDER Not only does lavender smell delicious, but it can also make really sweet confetti for your wedding day. The small lavender buds are the perfect size for throwing up in the air, and they’re not heavy enough to hit the couple too hard! Each lavender bush produces several stems, so you’ll be able to get quite a few lavender buds for confetti without too many issues. Lavender generally grows in gorgeous shades of purple, but you can also get a more creamcolored lavender if you’re looking for something to match the feel of your white wedding theme. DIFFERENT TYPES OF HERBS Herbs are another option that will work well as confetti and also smell delicious! More woody leaves such as rosemary or thyme are good choices, and again, they grow in abundance. These woody herbs are also more likely to be able to withstand different temperatures and be available all year round, making them even easier to access. You could have your herbs in traditional confetti cones or have baskets around the ceremony that your guests can access. LEAVES If you don’t want to have to think about pulling confetti out of plants, then consider using fullsized leaves! You’ll find that styled foliage such as olive or eucalyptus leaves will look gorgeous in a natural rustic or boho setting. Traditional autumn leaves or leaves that have gained a bit of color around the season will also look stunning if you’re having an autumn wedding and give you a lot more color in your photos. If you do want your confetti to be a bit smaller, then consider using a hole punch or even styled hole punch to make rounded or shaped confetti out of leaves.
It may be a little bit more effort, but it’s worth the time when you see the amazing results on your wedding day. FRESH OR DRIED ROSE PETALS Rose petals are a great alternative when it comes to natural options for your day. You can choose to have them in a single color to match your wedding theme or use a whole range of colors to make your exit really pop. Baskets or cones with rose petals on the end of your aisle can also double up as wedding decorations during the ceremony, before being put to good use at the end! Just be careful with using fresh rose petals as you don’t want any of the brighter colors to land on your dress and potentially leave a stain. BABY’S BREATH Baby’s breath has a naturally rounded pom-pom feel and will give you that white aesthetic to match with any theme on your wedding day. 1. MICHIGAN IS A GRAPE-GROWING STATE
There are more than 13,000 vineyard acres in Michigan and most of them contain juice-making grapes such as Niagara and Concord. In fact, Michigan grows more Niagara than any other state! About 3,050 acres are devoted to more than 30 varieties of wine grapes, both vinifera (old-world grapes like Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio) and hybrid (a cross between vinifera and native grapes). Both varieties of grapes make award-winning wines.
2. GREAT LAKES MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Set foot on a shore of the Great Lakes and it is easy to see why these massive bodies of water are such a force on Michigan’s climate. The freshwater lakes and the glacial soils contribute significantly to agricultural production, and most of the state’s wine grapes grow within 25 miles of Lake Michigan. The giant lake tempers the air along shoreline regions, protecting fall crops from harsh, early frosts and preventing spring crops from blooming too early. This part of the state excels at producing big, jammy, red varietal wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The Leelanau Peninsula in the northwest Lower Peninsula hangs its hat on lovely white varieties with well-balanced acidity, such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. Awardwinning hybrid grape wines, such as Marquette, Frontenac, and Vidal Blanc, rule the vineyards farther inland.

4. PARALLELS
There is something about reaching the 45th parallel that makes you want to stop and take a picture, but did you know the 45th parallel plays an important role in winemaking? Wine grapes grow between 30 and 50 degrees latitude—any farther south and it is too warm, farther north and it is too cold. Michigan is nestled nicely in there, with points of the state ranging between the 41st and 47th parallels. Michigan wineries along the 45th parallel share the distinction with many notable winemaking regions including parts of France’s Burgundy and Bordeaux, Italy’s Piedmont, and Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
5. ICE WINE
Have you had the pleasure of tasting ice wine? If so, you know what a treat it is. But, did you know that Michigan is one of the few places in the world that makes it? To make true ice wine, grapes must be picked at exactly the right temperature where the water is frozen in the grapes but the sugar is not— usually between 17 and 19 degrees Fahrenheit. This often means that grapes are harvested in the middle of the night with little advance notice. It is a bitterly cold, time-consuming process, and a true labor of love. The resulting product is a marvelous, honeylike nectar that inspires one to savor each sip.
