Styles come and go in the world of weddings, but the interest in barn weddings is still going strong. The number of couples choosing farms and barns as their venue tripled between 2009 and 2015 and the trend shows no sign of stopping. Even though a wedding in a barn might sound odd to some, there are many reasons why this setting is perfect for so many people. First, a barn presents a neutral background which allows the bride and groom to style it exactly as they wish. The wooden floor, walls, and ceiling won’t clash with any wedding color scheme—a big plus, especially for brides who choose bright, bold palettes that could look horrendous in some hotel or banquet hall settings. And, that neutrality lends itself to being dressed up or down to fit the style of wedding. Going rustic or boho? Perfect! Your crocheted lace, gingham, wildflowers, and Mason jars will fit in beautifully. Do you prefer a sophisticated, elegant style? No problem! Satin, crystal, white roses, and crisp tablecloths will create the look you want. Going more fairytale? A barn will work for you, too. Imagine those soaring uprights and beams swathed in tulle and
wrapped with thousands of fairy lights while soft candlelight creates amazing shadows on the high walls and ceiling! Another reason people are drawn to barn weddings is that these venues often have beautiful grounds surrounding them with flower-filled gardens and ponds. Your guests will have a lovely place to wander while you and the wedding party are having photos taken. And, if the season permits, you can have small bars and hors d’oeuvres stations set up in several locations to provide your guests with light refreshment at the same time. Unlike weddings held in busy hotels or resorts, a barn wedding allows you to have your own private corner of the world for your very special and personal celebration. You reserve the barn and grounds for your wedding and it will be only you, your husband, the wedding party, and your invited guests on the premises along with necessary personnel like your photog-
rapher and caterer. This privacy definitely adds to feeling of it being “your day” and eliminates the possibility of curious hotel guests and staff peeking in at your reception! So, if your first reaction to “barn wedding” was a resounding “HUH?,” you might want to think again and investigate this charming venue option.
