Birdie's & Howell by Elyse Apel

Birdie’s & Howell is preparing for its third holiday season in downtown Hillsdale. The gift shop, known for its unique gift selections, also sells home decor, apparel, and much more. Monique Sarles is the owner of Birdie’s & Howell and said she has just been blown away by how supportive the community has been of her endeavor since first starting it in 2021. “We are so grateful for our community. I have been blown away by its support and am grateful,” Monique says. “I am excited going into our second full year knowing our community has been so supportive.” Monique is in Birdie’s & Howell on a daily basis, which she says she loves. “If I’m not with my children or grandchildren, I’m at the store, typically six days a week.” While Birdie’s & Howell is always looking to expand its selection, Monique said they’ve recently made a few special additions that she has really loved and is excited to share with her customers. “One we have taken on is called Dune,” she said. “It is jewelry that incorporates different natural elements like sand from the Great Lakes, semi-precious stones, etc. Another line

is Happy Everything. It’s a fun gift line that is starting to take off in our store.” In 2022, Birdie’s & Howell also launched custom framing, which Monique says has taken off nicely. “I’ve been amazed at how busy we are with framing,” she explains. Monique says customers are coming from as far as Adrian and Jackson to have their pieces framed. “We are honored that they trust us with their prized artwork.” On November 9, Birdie’s & Howell will hold its much-anticipated annual Christmas Open House. “It’s a big event,” Monique says. “Lots of customers have already been asking questions about it.” The Christmas Open House is a ticketed event with all the proceeds going to Love INC of Hillsdale County, a local nonprofit whose mission is to mobilize local churches to serve the community better. “It is a fun night to welcome in the holiday season and help a great local nonprofit organization raise some funds,” Monique says. “We also have hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and live music.” You can buy tickets for the Christmas Open House at Birdie’s & Howell. Monique encourages customers to buy the tickets early if they would like to attend. “There’s a limited supply of tickets, and last year, they sold out very quickly,” she says. “This year, we are hoping it will be the same.”

On November 29, Birdie’s & Howell will hold their annual Anniversary Sale, which is always a great way for customers to get great holiday deals. Birdie’s & Howell is located at 28 N. Howell St. Store hours are Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Its phone number is (517) 964-2473, and you can also follow them on Facebook at Birdie’s & Howell and Instagram at birdies_and_howell.

Keeping It in Stitches Holly Jolly Christmas

By Diane K Clow Quilter and Sewist Picker And, hopefully, Good Friend

It’s almost Christmas! After the shopping, wrapping, decorating, and all the other traditional stuff is taken care of, it’s time for some Holiday Survival. So, here’s my gift to you. It’s time to make Holly Candy!

movie, “Twister”. While watching “Twister,” I casually mentioned Holly Candy. My movie watching buddy had never heard of Holly Candy (gasp!), so we made some. In July. He loved it!

My first memory of Holly Candy was when I was about ten years old. My Aunt Esther brought a beautiful plate of what looked like a plastic greenery wreath with red berries. Only it wasn’t plastic and those weren’t berries. It was a delicious recipe of corn flakes and marshmallows topped with cinnamon red-hot candies. And I fell in love.

It wouldn’t be fair to share all these great Holly Candy memories without sharing the recipe, so you, too, can create your own special Holly Candy tradition just like Aunt Esther did. So, get out the marshmallows, margarine, and corn flakes, and here we go!

Now with the help of a handy-dandy microwave oven, you can melt the marshmallows and margarine in seconds, pour in the green food coloring, and stir and coat the corn flakes in minutes! (It’s hard to believe, but the first home microwave ovens came out when I was a teen. They were big, heavy, and dang expensive. We only used ours to warm up hot dogs.)

Melt together in microwavable bowl – 1 Stick (1/2 cup) margarine and 40 large marshmallows

My daughter’s birthday is nine days before Christmas. As a child, she requested a Barbie cake for her birthday. The cake was a domed shape to make the skirt, and then Barbie was shoved in the middle up to her belly. The whole thing was covered with piped frosting stars in pink and white, and Barbie would have a magnificent confection ball gown. Then we would surround her skirt at the base with Holly Candy! In my previous work life, I had a co-worker who loved Holly Candy so much she would request it for her birthday. In February. Instead of using green food coloring, I used pink and made heart shaped Holly Candy. When my son was a young teen, his friend Joe and I had something special in common. We both loved the

Holly Wreath Candy

Stir in – liquid green food coloring a few drops at a time until you reach desired color. Stir in – corn flakes cereal – start with 6-8 cups until coated, add more until no longer sticky. Drop in small clumps on waxed paper, then sprinkle with cinnamon red hots candies. My family is not a big fan of the red hots, but I don’t care. I like them and they end up leaving them all for me! Let the clumps dry and then place in a “wreath” shape on a plate. I like to fill the “hole” in the wreath with peanut butter balls – but that’s a whole other Christmas holiday tradition. Thank you for letting me share our family tradition. Plus, as a bonus, to provide the article photo banner I had to make a batch of Holly Candy! In September! Keeping It in Stitches – and, I hope, YOU in Holly Candy!

Life is the Berries

SEASON REASON Growing up, I lived for me—not God. I was prideful, controlling, and used God’s name badly. Neighborhood kids said I was NOT going to heaven. My wide-eyed fear of death and hell began.

By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences Caricature Artist

Later, I joined a Christian group, attending fun meetings for the boys, pizza, and games. I heard God-stories of coming to faith. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.,” (John 3:16 NASB). We all sin. The penalty for sin is death, but Jesus paid the cost for our sin when he died and rose again. Jesus is the way, the truth, the life. I longed for the peace, passion, and purpose of Christians. But, as a control freak, I ran away from God every time with my heart racing. One meeting night, I grappled with a Jesus decision. I was a sinner needing a Savior, but battled in my mind again. My heart pounded. The cross is our bridge to God. I wrestled with this when a friend hugged me, whispering, “Jesus loves you.” Jesus loves me! I bolted smack dab into Jesus. Gobsmacked! After 4 years of dashing away, this time I stopped abruptly, plopped in a chair, and prayed something like this: “Dear God, I am so sorry for running away from you. I am a sinner. I believe you sent Jesus to die on the cross for my sins so I can be forgiven. I believe Jesus rose from the grave, so I can enjoy heaven with you. I trust in Jesus by faith. Thank you for saving me. AMEN.”

18 | SimplyHers.net

I added, “Um . . .er . . . Can you please not make me a Jesus Freak? AMEN.” Giggle. I’ve been a Jesus Freak ever since—and loving it! My fear of death vanished. I started going to a Bibleteaching church. Someone gave me my first Bible. I read it daily for growth. I pray and talk to God every day. God gives me HIS strength in my challenges. Jesus’ joy oozes! It’s the reason I wrote this page. God renewed me! You, too, can become a Christian. It’s life-changing! Won’t you confess to God you are a sinner, needing a Savior, too? Believe Jesus died to pay the cost for your sin. Christ rose to life for you to gain a new life in Jesus! God created you and me for this purpose— to love God and love people. I invite you to communicate to God, guided by my prayer above, or use your own words. Pray it. Mean it. Turn to Jesus in faith, now! Jesus loves YOU! God created you for this, my friend. Faith It. He’s the reason for the season! *If you trusted in Jesus by faith just now, may I suggest ways to mature in the Lord? Tell a Christian about your newfound faith. I invite you to join a Bible-teaching church. To grow, read your Bible, starting in John. Pray to God daily. Enjoy friendship with believers. Draw strength from God for challenges. Share your God-story, inviting others to faith in Jesus. Pray. Read. Grow. Share. Live out your destiny to love God and love people. Feel free to email me if you said YES to Jesus today. It’s my honor to pray for you. loveberrylk@gmail.com

Luminaries:

A New Town Tradition By Emma Verrigni

Two Hillsdale women — Heather Tritchka and Jean Heise — hope to ignite a centuries-old tradition by encouraging community members to place luminaries throughout the streets of Hillsdale.

Christ as “the light of the world.” In the United States, luminaries would light the path to midnight Mass during Christmas Eve night. In Spanish tradition, luminaries would be set out to represent a well-lit path for Joseph and the Virgin Mary.

On the first day of Advent, December 3, 2023, participating homeowners, businesses and community members will leave luminaries out from 5 to 8 p.m.

“There’s always been a spiritual symbolism. Now, luminaries are done all over the country for many different reasons,” Heise said. “It’s a magical, meaningful night, whether you are a Christian or not. It is very beautiful and very inexpensive.”

Heise and Tritchka aspire to see luminaries throughout the middle of downtown Hillsdale, at local businesses, near the college, and around homes. Tritchka said she would like luminaries to become a yearly tradition in Hillsdale.

When Heise told Tritchka about her idea to bring Luminaries to Hillsdale, Tritchka began to help Heise plan and organize the idea. The two prepared for Hillsdale’s first year participating in the tradition.

“We’d love to have a walk where people can look for a couple of hours and have a continuous block of lights to watch,” Tritchka said.

It’s easy to participate in the luminary tradition, and only a few inexpensive materials are needed. To set up luminaries, one needs tea light candles, paper bags, and any sort of weight inside the bag to keep it from blowing away — that could be sand, dirt, or even clay kitty litter. Then, the bags should be set outside alongside paths and roads, with the lit tea candle inside.

Heise had the idea after reflecting on the different communities she has lived in throughout her life. One thing that stood out to her were the communities that put out luminaires every year during the Christmas season. “People would often go for walks, or drive around town to look at luminaries,” Heise explained. “We’d like to start that tradition here in Hillsdale as an annual event to start the Christmas season.” Heise came to love luminaries when she lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with her husband. She always enjoyed driving through the streets to look at the luminaries. She recalled seeing all of the beautiful luminaries that lit up the town and the houses as they drove by. Fascinated by luminaries, Heise immersed herself in the history of the tradition. The tradition spans back to a sixteenth century legend that states Martin Luther, the German reformer, put candles on his Christmas tree. Originally, luminaries represented Jesus 22 | SimplyHers.net

To promote the project, Heise and Tritchka also plan to distribute posters and handouts throughout the community, encouraging families and businesses to leave luminaries out on Advent night. Heise hopes the tradition of luminaries will continue to grow throughout Hillsdale in future years, as more homeowners and businesses begin to participate in the tradition. Heise and Tritchka are also incredibly grateful for the donors that have supported their efforts, as well as for Woman’s Life Insurance Chapter 741 and the Hillsdale County Community Foundation. “We are very grateful to our donors who are making this possible,” Heise said.

Legal Matters By Kimm Burger — KB Law Office, PC

Many Ways to Give Santa Claus is coming to town . . . for most of us. There are people in our community that are struggling to find housing, to put food on their tables or to even provide the smallest of gifts to their children. Though money is tight for most of us, we still should look deep into our souls—and pocketbooks— to give during this time of year.

many volunteers collecting money, like Salvation Army, or local first responders and US military members collecting toys for Toys-for-Tots. There are local food banks that need supplies, Red Cross needs supplies, and a variety of other non-profit organizations that provide help to community members that you can donate to.

There are many non-profit organizations that can use help to maintain supplies throughout the season. You will see

But think outside of the box when asking how to provide help to local community members. Organizations like Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness (CAPA) are two organizations that specifically help children. There are children that are in need of foster parents and homes that provide stability and emotional support. Counties throughout the State of Michigan are struggling to find homes for children that have been abused or not properly taken care of. These children are the population that needs the most help throughout the season and throughout the year. The biggest donation you can give is of yourself and your time. When a child in the court system asks for food as a Christmas gift, it is disheartening, to say the least. What the children need is a family that can provide them with food and shelter so that the children do not need to worry about whether or not they will eat in the next 24 hours. Love and joy come along with bringing these children into your home. When donating money or items to non-profit organizations, you will be, in most cases, able to “write the donation off” on your taxes, which is kind of a perk. But donating should be more about what you can do to help others than about what you get out of it. By donating your time, and your home, you could learn what true joy is when you see the smiles on the children’s faces. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, you can contact your local Department of Health and Human Services or another child-placing agency for information.

PET TALK Winter Holiday Pet Safety

December abounds with holiday celebrations, and nothing can spoil good cheer like an emergency trip to the veterinary clinic. These tips can help keep your winter holiday season from becoming not-so-happy – for your pet and for you. Plan in advance Make sure you know how to get to your 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic before there’s an emergency. Talk with your veterinarian in advance to find out where you would need to take your pet, and plan your travel route so you’re not trying to find your way when stressed. Always keep these numbers posted in an easy-to-find location in case of emergencies: • Your veterinarian’s clinic phone number • 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic (if different) • ASPCA Poison Control Hotline: 888-426-4435 • Pet Poison Helpline: 855-764-7661 Quick action can save lives. If you believe your pet has been poisoned or eaten something it shouldn’t have, call your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency clinic immediately. You may also want to call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline (888-4264435) or the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661). Signs of distress include: sudden changes in behavior, depression, pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. Decorating Greenery, lights, and Christmas trees can make the holidays festive, but they also pose risky temptations for our pets. • Christmas trees can tip over if pets climb on them or try to play with the lights and ornaments. Consider tying your tree to the ceiling or a doorframe using fishing line to secure it. • Water additives for Christmas trees can be hazardous to your pets. Do not add aspirin, sugar, or anything to the water for your tree if you have pets in the house. • Ornaments can cause hazards for pets. Broken ornaments can cause injuries, and ingested ornaments can cause intestinal blockage or even toxicity. Keep any homemade 36 | SimplyHers.net

ornaments, particularly those made from salt-dough or other food-based materials, out of reach of pets. Tinsel and other holiday decorations also can be tempting for pets to eat. Consuming them can cause intestinal blockages, sometimes requiring surgery. Breakable ornaments or decorations can cause injuries. Electric lights can cause burns when a curious pet chews the cords. Flowers and festive plants can result in an emergency veterinary visit if your pet gets hold of them. Amaryllis, mistletoe, balsam, pine, cedar, and holly are among the common holiday plants that can be dangerous and even poisonous to pets who decide to eat them. Poinsettias can be troublesome as well. The ASPCA offers lists of plants that are toxic to dogs and cats. Take the time to check those lists! Candles are attractive to pets as well as people. Never leave a pet alone in an area with a lit candle; it could result in a fire. Potpourris should be kept out of reach of inquisitive pets. Liquid potpourris pose risks because they contain essential oils and cationic detergents that can severely damage your pet’s mouth, eyes, and skin. Solid potpourris could cause problems if eaten. Unplug decorations while you’re not around. Cats, dogs, and other pets are often tempted to chew electrical cords. Take out the trash to make sure your pets can’t get to it, especially if it contains any food or food scraps.

Guide to Ski Resorts in Michigan

Little known fact: Michigan comes in second for the most ski areas in the United States. Between the Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula, there are more than 40 ski areas that call the Great Lakes state home. Whether you’re a skier or snowboarder looking for a challenge or a family of four looking for a nice weekend getaway, nearly every region in Michigan has something to offer. Get the inside scoop on where to go and tips that help you enjoy a day or weekend on the slopes with this exhaustive list of ski resorts around Pure Michigan. Skiing & Snowboarding in Northwest Michigan When most people think of “heading up north,” they usually are looking toward Michigan’s northwest lower peninsula, and for good reason. This region is home to one of the best snowbelts in the state, thanks largely to classic lake effect snows we see rolling in off the big lake. If you’re lucky to catch a storm cycle, be prepared because when it’s good, it’s really good. Mt. Holiday – Traverse City With 16 runs ranging from beginner to advanced, there is a ski trail for everyone at Mt. Holiday. In addition to skiing, travelers can enjoy ziplining and tubing. Caberfae Peaks – Cadillac Michigan 115 (M-115) is the start of ski areas in the northern lower. Just 90 minutes north of Grand Rapids and a quick jaunt west on M55 in Cadillac will bring you to Caberfae Peaks. Boasting a family-friendly atmosphere, what Caberfae might lack in frills and over-the-top resort amenities they more than make up for by getting back to the core of skiing and snowboarding. With 34 runs, Caberfae brings 485 vertical feet and a wide-open backcountry area that’s lift-accessible, they are possibly one of the most affordable ski areas in Michigan as 44 | SimplyHers.net

well. Day and night skiing is available at Caberfae, and, for the best deals, get your tickets online before you even leave home. A full-service demo and rental shop are on-site for those who need equipment. The recently refreshed Mackenzie Lodge offers up ski in, ski out accommodations. Crystal Mountain – Thompsonville Head 31 miles northwest of Cadillac and you’ll reach Crystal Mountain—a favorite amongst many looking for a weekend getaway with ample on-site lodging. If there is one theme that stands out the most at Crystal, it’s family. With 58 runs of varied terrain and 375 vertical feet, this is a spot where everyone in your group will find a run they like. Crystal Mountain has a full-service demo and rental fleet on hand if you don’t have your own equipment. Ski and snowboard lessons are available for all ages and abilities starting at three years old so there’s no excuse for why your entire family cannot get out and enjoy the slopes. For those looking for great off-hill experiences, rent a fat bike and go for a ride in the snow, or relax after a day on the slopes at Crystal’s award-winning spa. On-site lodging is available for nearly every budget, and even the simple, no-frills hotel rooms found in the Hamlet still offer a near ski in, ski out experience. If you forgot something or need some snacks for your stay, check out the new Mountain Market for grocery items.

Bay Mountain at The Homestead – Glen Arbor Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay and the impressive Sleeping Bear Dunes dominate the views from atop Bay Mountain to provide a ski experience unlike any other in Michigan. Hickory Hills Ski Area – Traverse City Each year thousands of recreational enthusiasts enjoy the Hickory Hills Ski Area for snowboarding, alpine skiing, crosscountry skiing, and recreational snowshoeing in beautiful Traverse City. Petoskey Winter Sports Park – Petoskey A go-to spot that has it all: sledding, ice skating, hockey, skiing, and snowboarding. The park also features a warming house complete with a fireplace, concession stand, and board games available to check out. Challenge Mountain – Boyne City Established in 1984 as a non-profit organization, Challenge Mountain was the first independent adaptive skiing program in northern Michigan. Today, Challenge Mountain offers a wide variety of opportunities that continue to enrich lives and empower individuals living with disabilities through year-round adaptive recreation.

Skiing & Snowboarding in Northern Michigan Situated midway between Sleeping Bear Dunes and the Mackinac Bridge is Antrim County, which is by far one of the snowiest counties in the lower peninsula and perfect for skiing and snowboarding. Boyne Mountain Resort – Boyne Falls Boyne Mountain Resort has a variety of activities. Come winter, guests can take advantage of more than 60 downhill trails, enjoy cross country skiing, fat tire biking, horseback riding, ice skating, ziplining, snowshoeing, and tubing. The Highlands – Harbor Springs With over 432 acres, 53 runs, three terrain parks and eight lifts, The Highlands at Harbor Springs has trails for all levels of ski enthusiasts. The resort also offers a range of lodging from deluxe rooms and condos to cottages. The resort is also home to a tubing park, zip line adventures, horseback riding, and more. Treetops Resort – Gaylord With snowmobiling, snowshoeing, horseback riding, tubing, and more, Treetops

has the perfect mix of family activities. As an added bonus, kids six and under can ski for free with a paying adult. Shanty Creek Resorts – Bellaire Fifty-three runs can be found at Shanty Creek between Schuss Mountain and Summit Mountain. While both Schuss and Summit offer up a great variety of terrain, for a more family-focused resort feel and beginner to intermediate runs, check out Summit Mountain. If you’re after steeps, terrain parks, and long runs, get over to Schuss for some runs. A true destination resort, accommodations on-site at Shanty Creek are abundant. Whether you’re a couple looking for a quiet northern Michigan getaway or an entire family looking for a great weekend up north, Shanty has you covered. Do yourself a favor and book a room at the Lakeview Hotel on the Summit side of Shanty Creek. Even if skiing or snowboarding isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy a great winter getaway. Shanty Creek has one of the best tubing parks at Alpine Tubing on Summit Mountain that’s sure to bring smiles to everyone. Be sure to visit the quaint village of Bellaire, a downtown area that captures the essence of Pure Michigan in the winter. Nub’s Nob Ski Resort – Harbor Springs Head to Nub’s Nob for nearly 250 acres of ski slopes and trails. The resort also features a race arena slope for race training, modeled after the Olympic race paths. Otsego Club and Resort – Gaylord A quick hop off of I-75 east of Gaylord brings you to Otsego Club, a ski and golf resort that remained private for nearly 80 years but is now open for all to enjoy. Otsego Club is a gem of a resort in northern Michigan and is a must-see for even the most seasoned skier or snowboarder. In 2010, Otsego Club played host to winter Olympians training for the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. With around 400 vertical feet and 136 skiable acres and five lifts spinning, Otsego Club has a great variety of terrain for all ages and skill levels. A full rental fleet is available for both skiers and snowboarders too. You owe it to yourself to stay overnight or for an entire weekend. Amenities are top-notch including plenty of on-site accommodations from hotel rooms to condos. Prices are on-par with other resorts in northern Michigan and it’s recommended you book early but keep an eye on last-minute deals for a spur-of-the-moment getaway. Hanson Hills – Grayling Hanson Hills, one of Northern Michigan’s hidden gems, offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoe trails, and over 35 kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails. Snow Snake – Harrison

45

Serving Michigan since 1949, Snow Snake is a popular family destination for skiing and snow tubing.

Skiing & Snowboarding in Southwest Michigan Whether you’re a local of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Holland, or Grand Haven looking to sneak in some mid-week turns or you’re heading up from Chicago or South Bend, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy some great snow. When the weather is right, the southwest Lower Peninsula benefits from famous lake effect snow coming in off Lake Michigan. Cannonsburg Ski Area – Belmont Enjoy 18 runs (one at 1,800 feet), two terrain parks, and racing programs when you ski at Cannonsburg. Guests can also enjoy tubing and a special program for girls ages three to five called Mountain Minnies which encourages young girls to try snow sports. Mulligan’s Hollow Ski Bowl – Grand Haven Nestled in the hills just steps from the beaches in Grand Haven resides a great community secret known as Mulligan’s Hollow. The ski bowl, the former site of a WWII boot camp training United States Coast Guard members, is now a full-fledged community ski area right on the lakeshore. Open Thursday through Sunday and select school holidays, Mulligan’s Hollow is home to six trails all served by a network of five rope tows. It’s a great value, especially for those with children, as parents ski for free with their kids! Ditch your poles, grab an older pair of gloves and head out to Grand Haven to take some turns under the lights at the ski bowl of Mulligan’s Hollow. Bittersweet Ski Area – Otsego A bit northwest of Kalamazoo in Otsego, you will find Bittersweet Resort. As it’s just off U.S. 131 and only one hour and 40 minutes from South Bend, Bittersweet is an easy choice for many. With 20 runs and 350 vertical feet, the terrain at Bittersweet is far from flat. A great mix of terrain welcomes skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. In fact, Bittersweet has one of the more competitive ski race leagues in the state. If you do not have your own gear, no need to worry, Bittersweet has a full rental fleet with skis, snowboards, and helmets. Ski families in the area take note of Bittersweet’s family season ski passes. Whether you’re a family of two or four, Bittersweet has some great season packages to make sure you get out and enjoy the slopes in an affordable manner. Timber Ridge Ski Area – Gobles When the temperature drops, head to the historic Timber Ridge Ski Area, Southwest Michigan’s oldest ski hill. Here, you’ll find skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and other snow sports in Gobles.

Skiing & Snowboarding in Southeast Michigan Often overlooked by many in the state, you don’t have to go very far to enjoy some great skiing and snowboarding in the southeast portion of Michigan. 46 | SimplyHers.net

Whether you’re a weekend warrior looking to get some mileage on your skis mid-week before heading north, or you’re in town looking for some winter adventure, a few ski areas are sure to deliver. Alpine Valley Ski Area – White Lake Township Located off of M-59 just west of Waterford Township is Alpine Valley. Home hill of 2018 Team U.S.A. Snowboarder, Kyle Mack, Alpine Valley has some of the most scenic views in the area. With 25 runs and 4 terrain parks, Alpine Valley is one of the largest ski areas in southern Michigan. Rentals are available for skiers and snowboarders, making Alpine a perfect spot for those in the area not looking to own a bunch of equipment. Lift ticket options range from full-day passes to evening only, making this a perfect spot for after work. Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard Resort – Clarkston The closest resort to Detroit, Pine Knob offers various slopes and trails as well as three terrain parks and ski lessons for beginners. Mt. Brighton Ski Area – Brighton Renovated by Vail Resorts for the 2013/2014 season, Mt. Brighton is a great choice for skiers and snowboarders in southeast Michigan. Vail Resorts are known for their skier services and positive experiences both on and off the slopes, and Mt. Brighton follows suit. Twenty-four runs can be found of varied terrain at Mt. Brighton and with a great split of beginner, intermediate and advanced options, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Swiss Valley Ski Area – Jones Swiss Valley is conveniently located in Jones, Michigan, enticing folks to visit from all over southern Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Here, you’ll find 11 runs, a 225 vertical foot peak (the highest in Southwest Michigan) and seven lifts, including two quads and one triple. Mount Holly – Holly Nestled in Groveland Township near Holly there’s no other ski area quite like Mt. Holly. The ski area’s seven chairlifts include Southeastern Michigan’s only high-speed detachable quad, three rope tows, and two SunKid Wonder Carpets. Skiing & Snowboarding in the Up per Peninsula

At some point, you owe it to yourself to plan a trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The U.P. is home to some of the biggest snowfalls in the country! Mount Bohemia Adventure Resort – Mohawk The Keweenaw Peninsula is home to the famed Mount Bohemia where the average snowfall is in the 270” range and 900 vertical feet. Located just 45 minutes north of Houghton in the Keweenaw, Bohemia is not for the faint of heart. The 585 acres of skiable terrain is all backcountry-style, meaning no groomers here. 2 main lifts service the ski area with a fleet of shuttle buses that get you back to either should you get too far away. A destination in and of itself, if you’re looking to plan a trip, book your accommodations early as many weekends will sell out in advance. Yurts are prime options for staying on-site at Bohemia, but if you’re looking for the creature comforts of a hotel, plan to stay down in Houghton. If you are really feeling adventurous, book a Snowcat skiing trip at Voodoo Mountain. Mt. Bohemia’s sister ski area, Voodoo offers up a unique experience not found elsewhere east of the Mississippi. Marquette Mountain Ski Area – Marquette Marquette is best known as the home of Northern Michigan University, but the local ski hill, Marquette Mountain, delivers great views of Lake Superior. Smaller in scale with only 18 runs, Marquette Mountain brings the feeling of a community ski area versus a destination resort. While no lodging is available on-site, check out the nearby lodging options noted on the Marquette Mountain website. Bessemer Area Skiing If you’re planning a U.P. ski trip, make sure you take time to west to Bessemer. Just east of the Michigan/Wisconsin border you will find three great ski areas in the area: Blackjack Mountain, Indianhead Mountain, and Big Powderhorn are all within a 20-minute drive of one another. Blackjack Mountain—Big Snow Resort and Indianhead Mountain are under the same management group which means one lift ticket gets you access to 56 runs between the two. If you’re looking for more mellow terrain for the beginner and intermediate, stick to Blackjack. For those looking for steeper and longer runs, the frontside of Indianhead delivers. There is plenty of affordable on-site lodging options from hotel rooms to condos and chalets. Ranked one of the top five Midwest ski resorts, a stop-off at Big Powderhorn should be in order while visiting Bessemer. With 45 runs, multiple terrain parks, and an average of 17 feet of snow each year, Powderhorn is a destination on its own in the western U.P. All ages and skill levels can appreciate the terrain at Powderhorn with an even mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Bessemer is Big Snow Country and it is certainly worth the trek through the western U.P. to explore all there is.

Mont Ripley at Michigan Tech – Houghton Skiing, snowboarding, and tubing for Michigan Technological University and the public. As the oldest ski area in Michigan in the snowiest city in the Midwest, Mont Ripley is a true alpine town experience: 22 trails, a terrain park, tubing park, and a scenic overlook of the Keweenaw Waterway. Pine Mountain Resort – Iron Mountain Set among scenic mountain views and sprawling pine forests, Pine Mountain is consistently ranked one of the best lift ticket values in the Midwest. Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park – Ontonagon The Porkies is truly a family resort that provides a winter sports experience fitting every family member: first-timers, aspiring intermediates, thrill-seeking advanced athletes, and park rats who want a taste of natural features. Snowboarders, alpine, and telemark skiers can experience an unparalleled variety of terrain from well-groomed runs to powder stashes. You can enjoy everything from green comfortable runs to thrilling black diamonds and from open runs to nicely-shaped glades. Ski Brule – Iron River Ski Brule is a premier ski resort in the Upper Peninsula, located near the Wisconsin/Michigan border. Ski Brule is perfect for a day trip or a weekend get-away and offers winter activities for everyone: skiing, snowboarding, terrain parks, snow tubing, and trails for fat-tire biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. Families will love the resort’s sleigh rides and kids’ programs, and anyone can work on perfecting trick jumps with the Acrobag, a giant inflatable bag at the bottom of a five-foot jump!

Finally . . . . Wherever you decide to go, keep in mind that planning ahead and booking early will save you money and the hassle once on-site. From the beginner to advanced skier or snowboarder seeking adventure to a full-on family getaway, Michigan’s ski areas offer up something for everyone. Get outside and enjoy all that Michigan has to offer in the winter months. About the Author: Jason Dodge resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is the founder of BlackTruck Media + Marketing and editor-at-large of Michigan Ski Report, a website dedicated to highlighting the culture of skiing and snowboarding in Michigan.

Mt. Zion – Ironwood Located on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Mt. Zion is the oldest winter recreation complex in “Big Snow Country.” With equipment rentals, Learn to Ski programs and GCC’s nationally recognized Ski Area Management Program, this location is a great place for learners and seasoned snow sports enthusiasts. 47

This traditional clock is finished in Golden Oak on select hardwoods and veneers. Featuring rare, book-matched olive ash burl and a raised shell and vine overlay which enhances the graceful bonnet pediment, this is a carefully crafted piece. Olive ash burl corner overlays frame the crystal-cut oval glass on the lower door, providing a striking view of the pendulum and weights.
