Even though fall doesn’t officially begin until the middle of this month, I always feel that summer ends when August is over. My family had some wonderful times and made great memories!

Keri Kordie, CNM: Experienced, Caring, and Patient-Focused

If there’s any time in a woman’s life when she wants needs to have a positive connection to her health care provider, it’s when she’s expecting a baby. Even if it’s not her first pregnancy, there are so many concerns and so many factors involved in having a safe journey from conception to birth that a woman is easier in her mind if she knows her provider is really listening to her and working with her. Women choosing Keri Kordie, a certified nurse midwife and the newest member of the team at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology, will definitely have that going for them

Keri is a Michigan native who grew up enjoying time with her large extended family which includes 35 first cousins! A graduate of Mattawan High School, she says that she always knew she wanted to be a nurse in part from the influence of her maternal grandmother who was a postpartum nurse. “I knew I wanted to be like her and to follow in her footsteps,” explains Keri

They chose the Nurse-Midwifery program at Frontier Nursing University in Versailles, Kentucky, which is the premier midwifery school in the nation Keri attended there from December 2017 until December 2019 which earned her the credential of CNM: Certified Nurse Midwife.

Cover Feature 12 | SimplyHers.net

Once through the program, Keri began working at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology in East Lansing which she very much enjoyed. She had her first baby while she was there and realized she needed to cut back to a normal 40-hour week. She spent some time working at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo but a shift in the staffing situation there resulted in them downsizing the midwife program just three months after her arrival.

Now at a good point to make a change, Keri and her husband Matt decided to try the RV life Traveling between Michigan and Florida, Keri worked as a traveling midwife “It was an exciting year,” she says “We loved living in the RV we’re still living in it.”

During that stretch, Keri worked some in Coldwater and really liked it. “I love rural hospitals and the people here are amazing I was made to feel very welcome ” She began working full time at ProMedica Coldwater in June. Both Keri and Matt enjoy Coldwater, and she said her husband describes it as having a big city feel in a small city They’ve had fun exploring what the area has to offer for recreation, dining, shopping, and community events

As you’d expect, one of Keri’s favorite parts of her job is attending deliveries, and she loves helping people welcome their new babies She also likes doing birth control consults, because she feels that she’s imparting important information that the patients will be able to use throughout their lives.

The challenging aspects include two things that are common struggles for anyone involved in overseeing births: getting through the next day’s office patients after being up most (or all) of the previous night and finding time for the administrative details like keeping up with emails and completing charts

Keri and her husband have been married almost six years, and their daughter Kennedy is almost two Kennedy is having a wonderful time living the RV life and has become quite the expert at sand castles! The family shares their home with two cats and a dog. In what spare time she has, Keri enjoys reading and keeping up with that large extended family. She and Matt have recently purchased bikes and the three of them are logging some miles on family bike rides.

To sum up her approach, Keri has this to say:

ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital Obstetrics & Gynecology is located at 370 E. Chicago St., Suite 400, Coldwater, MI. You can reach the practice by calling 517-279-8465. 13
My goal in midwifery is to help people have the birthing experience they desire, and to help women throughout their whole lifespan understand their bodies and to feel heard and empowered in their healthcare decisions.”

VASCULAR FIRST!

More than 25% of patients with diabetes will develop foot ulcers or slowly healing wounds. The majority of those patients have severe vascular disease. A significant number will end with minor or major amputation, mainly due to failure to provide adequate blood flow to the wound bed and poorly treated infection.

It is estimated that more than two-thirds of leg and foot ulcers are associated with severe vascular disease.

The first line for treating leg and foot wounds or ulcers is to assess and treat properly and adequately the underlying circulatory vascular problem. This is important to ensure the response to treating the infection and promotes the healing and closure of open wounds.

Vascular assessment can be done easily and safely with painless testing of blood flow to the feet. In certain circumstances, Hyperbaric Oxygen will expedite the healing process.

At ADVANCED VEINS AND VASCULAR MANAGEMENT (AVVM), we are a limb salvage center accredited by the Joint Commission and the Intersocietal Accredited Commission (IAC). AVVM provides the most advanced comprehensive approach to treating the underlying vascular issues, the main cause of non-healing lower extremity wounds.

In addition to team leader Dr. A.K. Abushmaies, a certified wound care specialist RN, an LPN, vascular sonographers, a vascular intervention technologist, and medical assistants are all well trained and focused on promoting wound healing and limb salvage. For further information or to inquire about how we can help, please call our office at 517-797-5265 or visit our website at Veinsandvascular.com.

STACY WINGATE:

ALWAYS SEARCHING FOR THE PATIENT’S BEST OPTION

Stacy Wingate has always known that she wanted to work in medicine

“I’ve always loved caring for people,” Stacy says “Just the other day, I pulled up a story that I wrote in kindergarten The question was, ‘What would you like to do when you grow up?’ and I wrote that I wanted to be a registered nurse which is exactly what I am doing now ”

Since the beginning of the year, Wingate, a registered nurse, has worked at Advanced Veins and Vascular Management in Hillsdale, MI. Advanced Veins and Vascular Management specializes in circulatory arterial, venous, and varicose vein conditions. There she works as the team lead in wound care and also assists with procedures.

Wingate grew up in Hudson, Michigan, graduating high school in 2008.

“I went right back into school after high school to get my Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification,” Stacy says Stacy worked in a long-term care facility before deciding to head back to school

“I decided I wanted to venture out a little bit, so I went back and obtained my phlebotomy certificate,” she says

It wasn’t long before Stacy decided to branch out again and started working in dialysis at the University of Michigan for a few years Over the next few years, Stacy went back to school and received her Licensed Practical Nurse certificate (LPN), her Registered Nurse (RN) certificate, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and recently obtained her Wound Care certificate

“I’m always looking to learn new and different things,” Stacy explains Enjoying the adrenaline rush of working in the emergency room, Stacy worked there for some time and still occasionally works shifts to fulfill her adrenaline rush.

Stacy says that since she began working at Advanced Veins and Vascular Management, she has loved getting to learn more about different vascular issues and treatments.

“I have always loved veins,” she says. “In this job, I get to work with patients that have been told they may lose their leg or foot, and I can help them try to save that limb, whether it be from assisting with a simple vascular procedure or helping them to heal their wound that is present ” For Stacy, everything she does in her work is done with the patient’s health and continued wellness in mind “I work to build relationships with them that are strengthened by their complete trust in me,” Stacy says

She also loves getting to know patients on a personal level “I value my patients as family,” she explains “There are often times that I will give the patient a card or balloons for their birthday ”

Stacy says that she takes a holistic approach to a patient’s wellness

“We aren’t just looking at one aspect of a patient’s health,” she says “We are trying to find a systematic approach to treating all of their needs ”

Advanced Veins and Vascular Management, a nationally accredited vascular center by the Joint Commission, works to help their patients find non-surgical and minimally-invasive procedures that will lead to better outcomes for the patients while healing their wounds and preventing amputation

“IT IS SO SATISFYING TO WORK AT A LIMB-SAVING FACILITY,” STACY SAYS.

“I love challenges.” Stacy states, “When a patient comes in to us and tells us that they were told there is nothing more that can be done for them and that they are going to need an amputation of their limb, I will do everything in my power to prove them wrong and work ten times harder to save the limb and help the patient return to their normal life as soon as possible ”

Stacy recently received her Wound Care Certificate, which is something she is passionate about and excited to learn more about

“I’m also trying to learn and find the latest and best technologies out there that we can use to best help our patients and heal their ulcers and wounds quickly ” she says

Stacy said that everything she does would not be possible without the Advanced Veins and Vascular Management team which holds the

highest IAC accreditation in vascular testing, peripheral intervention, and vein procedures.

“We have such a fantastic team here who are always prioritizing teamwork Everyone, from the desk manager to the lead surgical assistant, works together to make sure that our patients are all receiving the best care possible,” she says

In her free time, Stacy enjoys spending time with her family

“I love everything outdoorsy,” she says “If I am not working, I am outside camping, hunting, fishing, or riding my quad ”

DRESS

Dress codes are theoretically supposed to make getting dressed easier. And yet, many of them just end up making things more confusing.

Business casual. Because, let’s be honest, the name itself is an oxymoron—and the dress code is somewhat of a no-man's land. Meaning the “code” to figuring out this dress code is somewhat of a moving target.

A big part of the uncertainty comes from the fact that business casual can vary from company to company and even from department to department, so the rules are not set across the board. However, it's generally understood to mean a style of dress that is less formal than traditional business attire but still professional and polished.

What does "business casual" actually mean? What are the key elements of this dress code, and how can you make it work for you?

Business casual is a relatively new dress code that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s in response to changing social and economic trends. Prior to this, traditional business attire, such as suits and ties for men and tailored dresses or skirt suits for women, was the norm in most professional settings.

The idea behind the business casual dress code was to create a more relaxed and comfortable work environment, while still maintaining a professional appearance. The dress code was intended to reflect the changing attitudes towards work with a focus on flexibility and creativity rather than strict conformity.

Initially, business casual was seen as a more casual version of traditional business attire, with women wearing skirts or dress pants with a blouse or sweater. However, as the dress code evolved, it became more relaxed and varied, with companies and industries setting their own standards for what constituted "business casual."

Today, business casual can mean anything from jeans and a nice blouse to a dress and flats. This can make it challenging to know exactly what to wear, but don’t worry. The secret is understanding the key elements of the dress code, because that knowledge can help you create a professional and polished look that is appropriate for your workplace.

Business Casual Tops

Tops and blouses should be professional and modest, with no plunging necklines or bare shoulders Avoid anything too flashy or revealing Solid colors or subtle patterns are always safe (and they are necessary building blocks for every wardrobe) If your style personality embraces color and your workplace is open to it, I highly recommend this as a way to add some personality to your business casual ensembles

Business Casual Bottoms

For business casual, you can wear slacks, skirts, or dresses that hit at or below the knee. Avoid anything too short or tight-fitting (these are work clothes not clubbing clothes). Ideally you want to make sure your clothing is comfortable, allows you to move easily and makes you feel confident. Business casual bottoms offer the most outfit versatility in “basic” colors like black, navy and gray

Business Casual Shoes

Shoes should be comfortable and professional-lookin toes and heels no higher than three inches (again they not for going out) Sneakers, flip-flops, and casual san generally not appropriate for a business casual enviro Heeled sandals are often up for discussion in the HR d Some can be very appropriate for business casual An much. In some organizations, they have landed on a n policy because it is just easier I think it’s like throwing with the bathwater, but I am not in HR and not the on rules. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Business C Accessorie

Keeping accessorie understated, with n jewelry or loud patt bet You’ll never go simple watch, stud classic handbag to h your look However, accessori those things that ca some zest to your o bold statement nec simple blouse and s your business casua blah to wow.

Remember, the key to dressing for business casual is to create a polished and professional appearance without being too formal or stuffy. Beauty & Business:

5 MAKEUP TIPS FOR THE WORKING WOMAN

When correctly applied, makeup is the missing piece of the puzzle for professional women who want to enhance their professionalism, confidence, and appearance.

Here are five easy and affordable tips to incorporate into your daily “dress for work” routine that will take your business appearance up a notch

1. USE TINTED MOISTURIZER

Your skin needs moisturizer. Much as a plant needs water, yourskin needs to be hydrated daily. Tinted moisturizer hydrates your skin while enhancing your complexion by evening out your skin tone. There are no chemical agents (bleaching creams, for example) in tinted moisturizers. Moisturizers are simply a lesspigmented version of foundation combined with hydrating agents.

2. MAINTAIN CLEAN BROWS

No pressure to have arches like Audrey Hepburn, but clean brows can do wonders for the face. In addition to making things appear more symmetrical without cosmetic surgery, a slight lift in the brow directs the attention from the under eye and pulls it toward the top, making you appear more brighteyed. A properly groomed brow requires a mere brush in the morning to lay your brows down and you’re ready for the workday!

3. USE MASCARA

Since eyes are the proverbial “windows to your soul,” a lot of your beauty enhancements can be handled here. Having said that, mascara is a must. Mascara brightens your eye area by bringing your lashes to life. Though I wouldn’t recommend blue or purple for traditional office environments, mascara comes in an array of colors including more work appropriate options like black and brown.

4. USE A WARM BLUSH

Of all the beauty products, most women are apprehensive of blush. Most think blush makes them look like an 80’s rock-star with over-contoured cheeks. However, blush simply helps to lift the cheeks and adds a subtle glow to the face. Choose colors that add warmth to your skin tone and avoid bright pink or red hues that can be shocking in an office environment.

5. SOFT LIPS

A little lipstick goes a long way. Now that your eyes are bright and your face is soft and glowing, you should add a soft, feminine lip color. Lipstick, lip balm, and lip gloss can be used together or apart, but only one is necessary in most professional settings. Much like tinted moisturizer, lip products help keep your lips moisturized and protected from chafing and sun burn.

All of the referenced products can be found for affordable prices beginning at two dollars. The look above can be completed in ten minutes or less for an easy enhancement to your professional look that won’t distract from the great work you do.

Fit Fitness into Your Busy Work Schedule

Making time for exercise can be tough, especially if you have a busy work schedule. But even if your life is hectic, it’s uber-important to fit fitness into your daily routine. After all, you (and your body) deserve the best.

Here are six simple ways you can make time for exercise, no matter how busy your life is.

1. Work out efficiently: Pick a workout that you can do almost anywhere. Ideally, this will be a form of exercise that doesn’t require much preparation. To make the most of your limited time, it’s a good idea to opt for workouts that offer significant gains in a short time.

2. Do what you like: Flexing your self-discipline muscles is often necessary when it comes to exercise. But there’s no point in doing something you hate. If you can’t stand running, don’t run! You’re much more likely to stick to a workout routine if you actually like it.

Make things easier on yourself by choosing a form of exercise that fits your lifestyle, personality, and taste. Not sure what you love to do? Don’t be afraid to experiment with different forms of exercise until you find what works best for you.

Remember, you don’t have to do an activity you hate.

3. Keep it competitive: Keep that spark alive by adding friendly competition to your workouts.

Research suggests that competition can be a major motivator. According to a 2022 study, competitions that provide rewards can make exercise more interesting and fun. There’s also a chance it can inspire you to stick to your workout routines.

Whether you’re elite, beginner, or somewhere in between, there’s something for everyone.

4. Add it to your calendar: You might be keener on exercising if you prioritize it as much as the other things in your life. If you unexpectedly had to pick up your kiddo from school and had no backup plan, how would you deal with the situation? Cancel a meeting? Take some work home with you?

The truth is that when we really need to, we get out of the office at the time that is necessary. So, make a schedule and stick to it. You deserve some you time.

5. Keep track of your activity: There’s an old saying that goes, “If you don’t measure it, it doesn’t exist.” While it’s a slight exaggeration, this phrase does have some truth to it, especially when it comes to exercise.

Take notes in your calendar every time you work out. Then add up your workout sessions at the end of each week, month, and year so you can monitor your progress and identify areas for improvement.

Measuring your activity levels (and, ideally, keeping notes on your progress) can help you stay on track and realize when you’re slipping before you’ve completely lost the habit.

6. Choose something over nothing: You don’t need an hour — or even 30 minutes — to get an effective workout.

Some exercise is virtually always better than none. When done frequently enough as part of an effective program, short and speedy workouts can do wonders for both your body and your mind. Heck, even seven minutes can make a difference!

So, squeeze in fitness wherever you are, no matter how much time you have. Muscle Up. LIVE FIT!

Supplements Are they right for you?

When it comes to supplements, there’s so much hype about their potential benefits that it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. While it’s true that vitamins and minerals are essential to health, it’s not true that taking them in pill, capsule, or powder form — especially in megadoses — is necessary or without risks.

For one thing, dietary supplements can sometimes interact with each other as well as with over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medication. In addition, unlike with drugs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not authorized to review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. It’s up to manufacturers to ensure that their products do not contain contaminants or impurities, are properly labeled, and contain what they claim. In other words, the regulation of dietary supplements is much less strict than it is for prescription or OTC drugs.

“Buyer beware,” warns JoAnn Manson, DrPH, MPH, MD, the chief of the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “Many supplements on the market have not been rigorously tested. Very few supplements have been shown to be of benefit.” And, she says, many carry unsubstantiated health claims.

Think that a healthy lifestyle requires not just good-foryou foods, exercise, and enough sleep but also taking a daily multivitamin-multimineral supplement? When you consider that an estimated one-third of adults in the United States and one-quarter of youths take them, per the NIH, you may be surprised to learn that the jury’s still out on whether they’re helpful.

One study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, which examined data from nearly 40,000 women older than 19 who were part of the Iowa Women’s Health Study, found that, on average, women who took supplements had a higher risk of early death than women who didn’t take supplements. Multivitamins did little or nothing to protect against common cancers, cardiovascular disease, or death.

Other research has found benefits to taking multivitamins. For example, a study in the August 2017 Nutrients concluded that frequent use of multivitamin and mineral supplements helped prevent micronutrient shortfalls that might otherwise cause health problems.

Overall, research on whether multivitamins actually promote health is mixed.

For women of childbearing age, taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid is recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to help prevent birth defects. Multivitamins might be prescribed by your doctor if you have malabsorption syndrome, a condition in which the body does not properly absorb vitamins and minerals.

In general, though, Manson says, “a supplement can never be a substitute for a healthy diet.”

Though multivitamins pose a low risk for drug interactions, the NIH recommends that smokers and former smokers avoid taking multivitamins with high levels of vitamin A or beta-carotene because these nutrients may increase the risk for lung cancer when consumed as supplements. everydayhealth.com

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking cells. It is a progressive disease that will eventually take away the ability to complete simple, everyday tasks. Early signs often appear in the mid-60s, affecting females more commonly than males. The cause of this disease is due to an abnormal buildup of proteins in and around the brain cells.

There has been a genetic predisposition identified, meaning you may be more likely to develop Alzheimer’s Disease if a direct family member has the diagnosis. Other risk factors for developing this disease include age greater than 65 and being female as previously mentioned. Interestingly, lifestyle plays a role, but specifically the lifestyle one lives during the midlife era, during the 40s to 60s. Eating healthy, being physically active, and avoiding alcohol and drug use can decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Having a history of head trauma or vascular injury such as a stroke can increase the risk of developing this disease.

Signs and symptoms of early Alzheimer’s can be forgetting recent conversations, events, or dates. A person with Alzheimer’s may stop speaking in midconversation and have difficulty with word recall or naming common objects. They may start to be more withdrawn due to difficulty in conversation. One may start to have more difficulty concentrating, developing a plan, or

struggle to pay bills or follow a recipe. They may misplace objects and also lose the ability to retrace steps to help relocate them.

Another sign may be getting lost in familiar places. You may start to see changes in a person’s judgment or decision making. Familiar tasks may start to seem more difficult. They may start asking questions over and over to help their memory or start relying on memory aids. Typically, long-term memory is not affected in early stages. As the disease progresses, a person may start to have mood changes or personality changes, seem more suspicious or anxious, and depression can also develop.

If you or a family member are showing some of these signs or symptoms, it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your primary care provider. They can discuss the signs and symptoms present and start a thorough workup. This may include screening tests, physical exams, labs, and maybe even some imaging of the brain to start.

Early diagnosis is important as there is no cure available yet. There are medications that can help with symptoms such as mood changes, depression, and disruption in sleep cycle. Other medications can help to slow the disease progression. Much research is being done on supplements and other treatment options to help find a cure.

Life is the Berries

You. Me. Same.

My friend Sue gives. Sue’s a giver to the max. She sends countless cards to encourage and finds the perfect cheer-up gifts, too. Sue slips presents in your church mailbox with no one seeing. She brings smiles.

Sue could use encouragement herself.

Sue never complains but lives with chronic pain. In church, I glance over to see the congregation standing and singing. But some days, Sue sits. That’s how I know her pain level. She may sit, but her hands raise in praise. Her head tilts heavenward, eyes closed, as she sings with the gentle soul of a powerful prayer warrior praising her God no matter her ache.

Sue’s family planned a fun ladies’ day out. The gaggle of girls show up for pampering at a nail spa. Sue rarely spends money on herself, but today she splurges for the group’s sake. The girls giggle, laugh, smile as their feet get the full treatment while relaxing on the massage chair. Smiles abound.

Sue smiles on the outside, but inside, she eye-rolls.

Her nail technician takes a much shorter time on Sue’s foot massage. He’s distracted. He does not give the long gentle spa treatment as the other girls coo over. So much for Sue’s special treatment.

It lacks.

Her baggy-eyed, bald-headed attendant shuffles Sue over to the nail table while the other girls enjoy a much longer massage treatment. Figures. With a puff of air and a sigh, the weary attendant asks Sue in broken English, “Why you bite nails?”

“Oh no, I do not bite my nails. My cancer treatments cause my nails to chip,” replies Sue.

His tired head pops up. His eyes widen. “You cancer, too?!”

He smiles big. He found a teammate. Pepped up, he spews out his hard cancer journey. His lack of hair and drudgery make sense now. Sue and he earned the label — cancer warriors. His vigor skyrockets as he repeats, “You. Me. Same.” Their eye connection breaks the language barrier. These battle mates fight cancer together. Now, he bounces up, grabbing the nail polish with hop in his step, telling every client enthusiastically, “Me. Her. Same.” His grin widens.

Sue’s spa-day smile radiates, too. Jesus’s words ring true. “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” (Acts 20:35b KJV). Ahh! God gave Sue a divine appointment with a new “you-me-same” friend.

And Now It’s Father’s Day

My Dad, Bill Hicks, passed away late January of this year. To honor him, I wanted to dedicate an article about him earlier this year around Father’s Day. But I couldn’t. I wasn’t ready to write that article. In June, I passed the display of Father’s Day cards in the store and was struck with the realization that I no longer had a dad. I no longer had the need to buy a Father’s Day Card, and I couldn’t write that article.

My dad was a well-known local banker. At one time, he was the branch manager at the Jonesville office of CNB and later the senior loan officer for the main office in Hillsdale. As sympathy cards arrived, Facebook comments were posted, and stories were shared in person about how many lives my dad touched. How he had helped a young girl finance her first car. How he helped a young couple get their first home. How he helped several local businesses get their start.

Having worked with him for many years, I knew these things, but to hear them said was so meaningful. One time my parents hosted the annual bank picnic at their home, and I heard co-workers’ comments that they had never seen Dad in anything other than a suit and tie. I thought this was funny as Dad certainly would dress more casually than that for a picnic!

Even more personal were the shared stories from the many employees he mentored at the bank. He was a “working manager,” never asking a staff member to do anything he wouldn’t fill in and do. I can vouch for that, as I worked as a teller for him in Jonesville. If the branch was out of balance at the end of the day, we would all gather chairs and sit to go through the proof tapes to find the error that put us

out of balance. Including Dad. He gave several employees the opportunity to advance, and, at a time when the majority of supervisory and management positions were held by males, Dad encouraged the “person” he felt was the best for the position. Male or female.

I cherish the many cards I received from the people who worked with him. One that stood out came from the person who joined the bank to fill Dad’s job when he retired. Craig later became the bank president and C.E.O. He not only shared appreciation for the role Dad took in “passing the baton” before retirement, but the observation that he never saw Dad “panic,” no matter what he was faced with. I thought about that comment a lot. Dad was very analytical and looked at a problem as something to solve and not be rattled by. It was him to a tee.

So recently I attended a retirement open house for a former bank co-worker. Lois started at the bank about a month after I did in 1973. She was the young lady who Dad helped to finance her first car. He later offered her a job. She became the bank’s first female loan officer. And, later, the bank’s first female commercial lender. At her open house, Lois spoke of Dad helping mentor her in her career. How he was a “working manager” who never asked a staff member to do anything he wouldn’t fill in and do. Her kind words about Dad when it was her special day were so touching, and I knew I was ready to write this article.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

TURN THE PAGE Book and Author Reviews

Since we’re still in the midst of summer as I write this, I recommend Summer Island by well-known author Kristin Hannah. Heroine Nora Bridge is a famous radio talk show personality and newspaper columnist beloved for her moral advice and compassionate understanding. However, her public world does not know her past history with a divorce and two estranged daughters. When a lover from her past comes forward to expose a past discretion ending her marriage and her daughters’ love, her private life explodes ... and, with it, her career. The story details her past and present life, telling how she makes her way back into the love of her family through facing her demons with honesty and love. I enjoyed it.

I’ve now finished Elizabeth Berg’s newest in her Arthur Truluv series entitled Earth’s the Right Place for Love. As I’ve reviewed before, in her first book, The Story of Arthur Truluv, we are introduced to the kindest man in the country, Arthur. Night of Miracles and The Confession Club embellish his life through the neighbors he touches throughout his life. This final one (I think) introduces Arthur as a sophomore in high school when he meets Nola, the love of his life. It delves into his kind personality at an early age and his loving relationship with his popular big brother, Frank. I cannot stress enough what a beautiful series this is!

I’ve discovered an author new to me, Viola Shipman. The Edge of Summer is a relaxing book. I wonder if this author’s other books give off this vibe? The story takes place in the actual western Michigan city of Douglas, located next to wellknown Saugatuck. Heroine Sutton travels from her home in the Ozarks to Douglas, hoping to discover her mysterious family history. The many detailed descriptions of the beaches and landmarks in Douglas have me itching to return there for a long weekend! I am going to look into this author’s other books. [Note: Well, I have now discovered

Viola Shipman is actually a man! He has taken his grandmother’s name as a pseudonym to honor her heirlooms which inspire his stories, and he lives six months in Douglas!]

Another newly-discovered author is Taylor Jenkins Reid. I’ve now read two of her books. Carrie Soto Is Back revolves around the world of professional tennis. Carrie has retired on top as the women’s world champion. When her title is threatened, she decides to make a comeback at the ripe old age of 37 and retain her hard-won title. If you love tennis, this is your book. The other book of this author that I’ve read, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, goes in a different direction. This novel tells the story of the fictional Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo. At age 79, she gives a final interview to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. As her glamorous life unfolds, she describes how she ended up marrying seven men. Why she is doing this memoir and her reasoning in hiring the unknown Monique will later unfold. Her reason will take you by surprise.

From another favorite author of mine, Irishman Patrick Taylor’s latest is entitled An Irish Country Welcome, his fifteenth in the series of Dr. Fingal Flaherti O’Reilly and his fellow physicians. The stories are about the residents in the small village of Ballybucklebo. In this latest, a new doctor is introduced to the practice, but is he a good fit for the rough and tumble Irish country life?

Over

The EDG E

Ahh, winter, those were the days. Looking back, I realize winter truly was the most wonderful time of the year and do you know why? I’ll tell you why, because it was cooler! No sun hats or sunblock needed. I am so sick of year-round sunshine and hot weather I could spit and/or swear. I’m telling you it’s enough to put me right over the edge.

We live in Florida now and have for the last seven years. I’m the one who wanted to move, even went so far as to promise my husband many things I had no intention of fulfilling if only he would consent to move. It was a struggle to convince him, but I did. It may have been when I told him I would be a snowbird with or without him. Actually, I think it was when I added that I would be a snowbird with a good friend of ours whose wife didn’t want to move either. The idea that I would consider living with a man other than my husband, even platonically in separate bedrooms, was not something my husband could accept so he moved with me.

All those threats, promises, lies, and conniving and what did it get me? A husband that won’t leave this state! He loves it and thinks I’m the best for talking him into it. No matter how much I beg, plead, threaten, or promise, he “ain’t gonna move” and nothing I say can convince him otherwise. Lucky me, Mother Nature is on my side and as, we all know, she is the mother of all mothers when it comes to … well, weather. She just about has my husband convinced he should listen to me once again and get out of this state.

I know Florida is just one of many states in the U.S. that’s suffering from heat issues right now. I believe it’s Mother Nature’s devious plot to melt mankind down to nothin’! Now it was never my plan to be melted down to nothin’, I just wanted to move to a warmer state. You know the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for”? Yeah well, I wish I would have been a little more specific in my wish regarding the weather.

Yesterday it was 98° with the heat index at 121°! No matter how you look at it, that’s hot!! I never used to sweat, but now I sweat. I never used to pray for cloudy days, but now I cherish them. I never used to have heat rashes, but now I swear I use a bottle a day of medicated body powder. Why do I need so much body powder you ask? I pour it into my bra and panties multiple times a day so the girls don’t get too uncomfortable and my thighs don’t rub each other raw. I’m keeping some company in business, Mucinex? Massengill? I don’t know. I don’t remember who makes the body powder I use. I do know my brain has fried and it’s not from drugs; I can no longer think straight thanks to this heat.

I’m telling you, I need a change in weather. I need cooler air and I don’t care where I get it. Send me to one of the poles, North Pole, South Pole, I just don’t care. The relief would be so great, I doubt I’d even take a coat. The rest of you sweating ladies can keep the medicated body powder business in business. I’m telling you, it’s enough to put me over the edge.

Hillsdale Towing there when you need them!

If there are two words that can trigger frustration in a person, “car trouble” would certainly qualify. We depend so much on our vehicles, and that’s especially true in rural areas. When our cars and trucks leave us stranded, we may need a reliable towing service. Jeff Valentine and Mike Peiffer, owners of Hillsdale Towing, Inc., are ready to help!

Jeff purchased the business in 1987 from owner Mike Davis. In January 1999, Phil Palmer purchased Caskey’s Towing and the two men merged the businesses and incorporated. Phil continued with the business for 24 years. In January 2023, Mike Peiffer—owner of Auto Image Paint & Body—bought Phil’s interest in the business and became Jeff’s partner. Mike had added towing service to the body shop in 2019 so he already had towing experience.

Hillsdale Towing provides 24-hour towing services for vehicles up to one-ton trucks. The service area covers a 35- to 40-mile radius of Hillsdale. Their equipment includes two flatbed and two conventional tow trucks. Besides towing, Hillsdale Towing can help you with lockouts, flats, jump starts, and fuel delivery. “We are always ready to help with your emergency,” says Mike.

Both Mike and Jeff are area natives and continue to live locally. They take great pride in offering stellar service and are on a first-name basis with not only their personal clients but also their many corporate clients. Jeff and Mike strive to get where they’re needed, 24 hours a day.

Some of the most challenging calls are when Hillsdale Towing is summoned to crash sites. Not only can these be frightening, dangerous, and emotional events for the people involved, but the vehicles may require maneuvers such as disentangling and flipping before they can be towed. The team’s years of experience help them handle these situations with skill and caring.

“We’ve been here over 35 years, doing our best to meet the needs of the community,” says Jeff.

Jeff and Mike work to be the towing service you can rely on, one you’ll feel safe and comfortable with any time of the day or night.

Accupoint Pain Management, Inc.

Helping when it hurts

For 20 years, Mark McClanahan CRNA, NSPM-C, has made it his life’s mission to serve his patients and help them achieve an improved quality of life.

Specializing in interventional pain management, Mark recently started his own business—Accupoint Pain Management, Inc.

“I’ve been doing anesthesia the past 20 years in Michigan,” Mark says.

In 2002, Mark, a lifelong Michigan resident, graduated with honors from Wayne State University with a Master’s of Science in Nurse Anesthesiology. For the first 18 years of his career, Mark specialized in acute pain management, spending most of his time in operating rooms.

“Working in acute pain management, I would only be interacting with patients for 24 hours and then they are gone,” he explains. “In 2021, I went back and completed a fellowship in interventional pain management,” he says to have his own patients.

This Mark did at The University of South Florida before spending a year in Iowa training with Dr. Keith Barnhill, one of the top experts in advanced pain management in the nation in 2021. After Mark completed his training, he became one of the first fellowship-trained CRNAs in the state of Michigan. Mark is board certified in both anesthesia and non-surgical pain management.

“I now specialize in treating spinal pain while also treating low back, leg, neck, and arm pain,” he says. Following his licensing, Mark began working at Hillsdale

Hospital. It was not long, though, before Mark decided to set out on his own and start his own business in Hillsdale, treating patients struggling with pain management.

“One of my biggest goals with patients is to ensure they can have the fewest number of visits with the most amount of pain relief,” Mark says.

Mark says he prides himself on not only prioritizing the relationship with the patient but also working closely with local primary care providers and physicians, as well as physical therapists, chiropractors, and behavioral health specialists so the patient receives the best care.

“It’s a collaborative relationship,” he says. “My goal is to educate the patient, not just treat.”

His new clinic specializes in long-term non-surgical low back and leg pain (sciatica), as well as neck and arm pain. While Mark will often work to help treat patients so they can avoid surgery, if surgery becomes necessary, he also will work with them to ensure continuation of care after surgery.

Mark explains that educating the patient about their condition is critical to long-lasting improvements.

“Patients need to be very involved in their care,” Mark says. “It is also critical to establish a rapport with the patient and work with both them and their families.”

Mark meshes quality patient care with the latest cuttingedge technological advances in comprehensive pain management.

“My approach is holistic. Medications, physical therapy, and exercise therapy including aqua therapy can all be used together to give patients hope they will be able to improve their pain while doing so on their terms.”

Mark is excited to expand his business to treat even more patients.

“We are already planning to open another center in the fall in Marshall, Michigan.”

Accupoint Pain Management, Inc. is located in the Medical Plaza at 3271 W. Carleton Rd., Hillsdale, Michigan.

Both former and new patients must receive a referral from their primary physician before scheduling an appointment with Mark. Referrals can be sent to info@ accupointpain.com and Accupoint can be reached at 517797-4476.

PLACES IN MICHIGAN

Are you interested in all things paranormal? Take a journey into some of the most haunted places in Michigan! From lighthouses to restaurants, there are a slew of locales that have a supernatural past all across the state Keep reading to learn more about these eerie spots, courtesy of Kat Tedsen and Bev Rydel

In 2007, as skeptics, we began our search for the truth After well over 200 investigations, we have found 30 accounts in Michigan alone that carry a mystery leading us directly to the paranormal events that simply cannot be explained These accounts are now part of our Haunted Travels of Michigan book series Don’t just believe us. To determine if paranormal reports at various spots around the state were myths or something more we worked with video, audio, and photographic professionals not related or linked to the paranormal We wanted completely objective feedback on suspect evidence collected during investigations Sit back with a glass of fresh cider and a tasty cinnamon doughnut, whatever the season, as we share just a few of our favorite Michigan haunts Then, perhaps plan a trip to see what we found for yourselves if you dare

1. Doherty Hotel - Clare

The Doherty family has owned and operated the hotel since it opened in the 1920s

The Doherty men were and remain the business managers However, as Jim Doherty (a current owner) tells it, it was the Doherty women who were the heart and soul of the business. The hotel has a colorful history. During prohibition, it was a speakeasy, a place for backroom gambling, and adult entertainment It was also a meeting place for the Mafia and Purple Gang Here they worked out their differences In 1938 the hotel was the site of one of Michigan’s most notorious murders Isaiah Leebove, former Purple Gang attorney turned Purple Gang businessman, was murdered in the bar. He was shot dead by his cousin and business partner Jack Livingston

Over the years there have been numerous yet vague accounts of its haunting Some believe Isaiah Leebove may remain along with family matriarch, Helen “grandma” Doherty The evidence we collected was startling Perhaps the most surprising evidence was recorded in a back room where Grandma Doherty’s body was placed after her death In this area, the voice of a woman was recorded It was soft and feeble as if she were either very old or very sick The words were in response to questions asked We believe it was the voice of Helen “grandma” Doherty

2. Terrace Inn and 1911 RestaurantPetoskey

Over the decades there have been many reports of paranormal activity at this Victorian inn just north of the city of Petoskey. If you ask the desk clerk for the inn’s “Ghost Files,” they’ll hand over a thick folder with accounts from past guests and employees Based on the evidence we ’ ve recorded, it seems these reports may very well be true After five years, this historic inn remains one of our most paranormally active locations

There seem to be three prominent spirits that wander the inn The first is a lady in white seen in the hallways and guest rooms Could she be looking for the man in t d th hostly apparition was seen on the balcony? Then there is the a lad of perhaps 12 or 14 years of age, who inhabits the mpelling recorded evidence and in-depth historical research lead ve

3. The Whitney RestaurantDetroit 5. Michigan’s First State Prison - Jackson

Located on Woodward Avenue, this exquisite restaurant was the former mansion home of David Whitney, Jr Mr Whitney was one of the Midwest’s wealthiest lumber barons at the turn of the century, and he built this magnificent 21,000 square foot home in 1894. Since the mansion’s restoration in the mid-1980s, reports of unexplained activity have existed Shadowy apparitions have been seen on the second floor, disembodied voices have been heard, and other strange phenomena have occurred

The Whitney was one of our first investigations, and it changed our view on the existence of ghosts and the paranormal It brought us from skeptics to believers People often tell us of getting feelings they think relate to nearby ghosts. We dismissed it as overactive imaginations until we had such an experience at The Whitney during an afterhours investigation Kat was standing on the second floor when the atmosphere, strangely enough, changed around her Just as people had explained, the atmosphere became thick, charged. She said, “I’m getting something here.” Later, when audio was reviewed, a disembodied voice was clearly heard saying, “That’s right ” Followed by the words, “I am still here ”

Around the same time, Bev was alone on the first floor asking any spirit to knock on the wall She didn’t really expect a response but was stunned when she heard a loud, resounding rap on the wall next to her She asked for another response and received it Although she didn’t hear it at the time, a clear voice was recorded that simply said, “Hi ” During follow-up investigations, the sound of a piano was consistently heard and many other unexplained voice phenomena recorded Our extensive historical research turned up the fact that both Mr Whitney and his wife passed away in the home Based on the evidence and known events that happened in the house, we believe members of the Whitney family have never left David Whitney and his family had an incredibly strong bond that has connected them both in life and in death. It’s one of our favorite stories

4. Seul Choix Point Light House - Gulliver

Who doesn’t like the romance, mystery, and history of a lighthouse? Michigan has several that are said to be haunted We’ve investigated a few without success until our time at Seul Choix Point Who haunts this Upper Peninsula lighthouse? For decades it’s been said that Captain Willie Townsend, former light keeper, remains attached to the old structure. It is also thought two female spirits wander the light keeper’s residence One of them is Mary “grandma”

Pemble, the mother-in-law of a former light keeper

Grandma Pemble died there during one of Lake Michigan’s worst blizzards, a blizzard that assailed the lighthouse. Like an invading army, the wind and snow smashed through windows and assaulted the rooms There have been extensive accounts of activity by visitors and employees

There have been reports of apparitions, objects moving, the scent of Captain Townsend’s cigar smoke, and much more. During our investigation, though, we did not come up with clear evidence of Willie Townsend However, we did capture several disembodied male voices Who knows? One of them could have been Willie

Established in 1838, Michigan’s First State Prison remained in operation through 1934 It was an incredibly brutal place that housed some of the state’s worst criminals and was known for its prisoner neglect, abuse, and torture Today the old prison has become the Armory Arts Village, a residence and studio for local artisans Apartments are very contemporary and halls covered with artwork In spite of its modern renovations and freshly painted walls, though, rumors persist of its haunting A few artisans have even drawn sketches of the fleeting apparitions they’ve seen wandering hallways Judy Krasnow is the owner and operator of Jackson Journeys, LLC. Judy hosts daytime historic tours of the prison, so a visitor can see (and feel) the hauntings for themselves She is also the resident expert of the prison’s history and lives on-site She swears her apartment, which was once a series of prison cells, has ghosts Judy is not the only resident who believes that

Even though the upper floors have undergone renovation, the underground section that held solitary confinement remains structurally intact. Although cells have been removed, there is intensity in this area that cannot be denied Perhaps the most darkly powerful location is the tunnels As Judy tells us, these small cramped, underground passageways once took guards to the watchtowers and their cottages on the outside of prison walls Prisoners were also taken through the tunnels to get to and from work. It is believed the tunnels may have been used for prisoner discipline There is no doubt, even the bravest ghost hunter would feel vulnerable and intimidated in these endlessly dark tunnels We began our series of investigation in early 2012 These included private investigations with our core team and, later, public investigation for guests The volume of recorded evidence collected to date is remarkable. There is no question many inmates at Michigan’s First State Prison have never left

6. Fort Holmes, Back Trails, Cemeteries, Mission Point Resort - Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is one of the most historic, beautiful, and unique locations in the country. The history of the island dates back thousands of years It was home to Native American settlements long before European exploration began in the 17th century The island saw at least two battles during the War of 1812 and, over the centuries, it has bee n the scene of many tragic deaths. It is no wonder that urban legends continue to build on the island’s paranormal activity Many seem to believe the beautiful Grand Hotel is the primary focus of ghostly phenomena on the island Unfortunately, the Grand Hotel does not permit paranormal investigations Until they do, those legends must remain just legends Another location believed to be haunted is Fort Mackinac It has a rich history with many tragic stories behind its stone fortress. But, like the Grand Hotel, the fort does not permit paranormal investigations For now, the stories must remain just stories

Let’s talk about the locations where we have recorded evidence, however The first is Mission Point Resort Mission Point has gone through many changes since its beginning in 1827. The area first served as a missionary school for children of mixed Native AmericanEuropean blood For a short time, it served as Mackinac College Today, it's a luxury resort on the island’s east side Based on our multiple investigations, it seems the stories of its haunting have at least some basis in truth Evidence has been recorded in the theater, outside grounds, and some of its rooms According to Todd Clements, author of “Haunts of Mackinac,” a common thread for the haunting seems to be a young college student back in the 1970s who reportedly committed suicide They refer to him as Harvey Although the official report is suicide, Todd suspects Harvey’s death may have been murder We believe, like Todd, that more than Harvey haunts the resort

Next would be the ruins of Fort Holmes When we first investigated the old ruins, we were hoping to identify evidence pointing to soldiers Instead, what we captured were disembodied voices speaking Ojibwa Interesting Other areas where evidence was captured is the old Post Cemetery and several back trails on the island One of the trails was the road where Harvey’s body was found These are just a few locations on Mackinac Island we ’ ve discovered to be paranormally active. With its rich history and centuries-old buildings, there are likely many more still to be discovered

About the Authors: Bev and Kat’s Haunted Travels of Michigan book series includes the above locations and many more The books are all web-interactive, and each story has a special password that links readers to our website Secret Rooms where they can access recorded evidence. More information on Haunted Travels of Michigan’s books, presentations, and public ghost hunts can be found at www hauntedtravelsmi com

Mindfulness in the Garden: Cultivating Memories of Joy

Autumn is the time of appreciation. Our bodies and our gardens have enjoyed the cheerful warmth of the sun Songbirds’ chicks have fledged The trees they nested in have feasted on much summer light and no longer need the chlorophyl that makes their leaves green They have gathered all the energy that they need to survive the winter months; all that’s left is to make a cozy blanket of fallen leaves and turn in for a long sleep

Living in an area with four distinct seasons gives us the opportunity to take notice of the passage of time with mindfulness and attention A perfect summer day by the lake is just too good to miss when we know we have a long winter ahead, and spiced apple cider tastes better because it’s only available for a limited time Native perennial plants show off their seasonal interest with esp ecially bright foliage or with large, showy seed heads on long stems. This visual showcase teaches us about each plant’s life cycle so that we can be better prepared to care for it in our yard or garden.

Paying close attention to these changes helps us form the vivid memories that lift our spirits in challenging times. If you have specific goals like a garden project, use a journal or create a note in your phone to track your progress and joys Take note of any residential or commercial plantings you’ve admired throughout the growing season What time of year did you have the most color in your yard? What unexpected color combinations have inspired you? Look up the bloom times of your favorite flowers for hardiness zone 6a to ensure continued availability throughout the growing season As plants grow and fade i n your outdoor spaces, it connects us to the passing of time so we can feel more present in our lives

It's difficult to pause and reflect when there’s so much work to be done Fruit needs to be gathered and processed into syrups and jams Herbs need to be harvested and dried for culinary or cosmetic use Children need backpacks filled with pencils and fresh notepads

Fields need to be mowed, bales must be tied. We’ll be busy cleaning debris from our lawns and preparing our plants for the cold. Pollinators and beneficial wildlife are working every moment to ensure the continuation of life and the bounty of harvests to come If we’re lucky, we may see a tiny Monarch butterfly hitch a ride on the air currents that will carry them to central Mexico, where they overwinter in rare oyamel fir forests As the days grow shorter and cooler, the harvest season reminds us that our attention and dedication yield abundant rewards Those of us with dirt under our fingernails know a secret taking care of our gardens helps us cultivate the resilience and curiosity that make life sweet no matter the weather

Luminary Celebration!

A luminary light celebration is coming to Hillsdale! Woman’s Life Ins. Chapter 741, along with your friends and neighbors, is bringing a new Christmas season event to the Hillsdale community. Luminary lights are tea lights set inside small paper bags that are lit and set out to celebrate Advent and the coming of the Christmas season. Luminaries are an ancient tradition celebrated across the world. Please join us and your friends and neighbors on Sunday, December 3, from 5-8 pm and establish a new Hillsdale tradition. To participate, simply purchase bags, tea lights, and anchoring material (sand or kitty litter). Put some anchoring material in the bags, add the tea lights, and place them in front of your home and/or business. Light the candles at 5 pm and be part of the continuous lights connecting the community. Supplies for the luminaries can be purchased at Gelzer’s Hardware store or any place that sells paper bags and candles (supplies can also be purchased online). For more information, please contact Jean at 815-222-9666. We look forward to you being part of this magical event!

Helping Hands Pregnancy Resource Center (HHPRC), formerly known as Alpha Omega Care Center is located at 46 South Howell Street, Hillsdale, MI. Our mission is to empower men and women to make life-affirming decisions about pregnancy and sexuality through Christ-centered compassion, resources, and education. Established in 1987 under the name of “Alpha Omega Women’s Care Center”, we are the only Crisis Pregnancy Care Center in Hillsdale County. We are a non-profit agency; all our services are provided at no cost to our clients and are received through generous donations from individuals, businesses, and churches throughout Hillsdale County.

Material Assistance: Help for parents who choose life. Once a month, parents can come in for diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, and clothing at no cost.

Pregnancy Tests: No cost, lab-quality pregnancy tests are offered at Helping Hands.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS

Talk with your financial advisor or accountant about Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA, gifting appreciated assets, and donation of real property.

SERVICES INCLUDE:

DESIGNER PURSE BINGO

How it works: Applications are taken (during the application enrollment period) and families and children are served as donated funds become available. Volunteers then go shopping with families. Children must be 16 and under at time of sign up. Families may participate every other year.

Ultrasounds: Coming soon! Fundraising is complete! We hope to offer this service at no cost in early Autumn, 2021 and provide an amazing opportunity to save babies and affirm life.

Designer Purse Bingo will be held September 25th and we are looking for businesses, organizations, or individuals to sponsor purses. Please contact Heather Upton for more info. 517-425-4145 or casaofhillsdale@gmail.com

Earn While You Learn (EWYL): Moms earn “baby bucks” while learning through parenting classes. A wide array of topics span prenatal care through the toddler years, parenting and step-parenting, life skills, as well as special circumstances such as adoption. “Baby Bucks” can be spent in our Blessing Store on new baby/toddler clothing as well as baby tubs, pack ‘n plays, new cribs and mattresses, high chairs, etc.

100% of all donations are used to purchase warm clothing for the children!

Find us on Facebook at Hillsdale CASA, Inc - Child Advocates #changeachildsstory

Numbers: According to our 2019 records, we saw 419 clients. We provided 5,111 diapers and 4,267 items of clothing. Thirty-nine parents attended parenting classes, 303 clients came to our center for material assistance. Fifty-eight potential parents came in for no-cost pregnancy tests. Helping Hands volunteers logged in 1,846 hours.

Name and Logo Change: “Alpha Omega” has special and significant meaning to many in the Hillsdale County community, so WHY did we change our name? We chose a name that clearly and simply represents our mission and services to those who need our help.

For more information contact CAA in Hillsdale County: — 517-437-3346.

Vitally Important Parent (VIP): Dads are important, too! These classes are just like EWYL, but are focused on the important role fathers play in the lives of their children. “Dad Dollars” are earned and can be spent in the Blessing Store, as well.
