INTRODUCTION TO EVENING COURSES Part-time and evening students are a very important part of our college. We value their dedication to, and interest in their academic work and we aim to provide them with the support they need during their studies.

This prospectus outlines the broad range of parttime courses available in GCC. We offer courses that can be completed in 6 weeks to honours degree programmes lasting three years as well as professional courses to prepare students to work.

Last year at our college in Cork almost 500 students attended part-time courses. Some used this time to acquire third level degrees, more worked toward professional qualifications while others upgraded their skills to ensure they remained competitive in the workplace.

Successful part-time and evening students on courses lasting one academic year or longer are invited to attend the college’s graduation ceremony held each autumn. This ceremony is an occasion for the graduates and their families to celebrate and reflect on the achievements of the past year.

THE PROCESS OF APPLYING

With the exception of HETAC and certain other courses, there is generally no selection procedure for continuing education courses at Griffith College Cork.

b) If participants have not attended any classes a refund of fees paid less an Administration fee of €50 will be given. You must however advise the Evening Course Co-ordinator in writing 7 working days before the course commences that you are unable to attend otherwise you will not be eligible for a refund.

To ensure a place on the course of your choice we strongly recommend that you enrol early.

c) Fee refunds are not given to participants once the course has started.

To enrol you must complete an application form and return it to us.

All fees must be paid at least 1 week prior to commencement date of the course.

• Students with disabilities should inform us of their needs when they apply. Every effort will be made to assist each student e.g. by time–tabling classes in ground floor rooms near the entrance and general advice etc.

• Courses can be paid for by giro, cheque, bank draft or credit card. The College discourages the payment of fees by cash.

• Many part-time students attending our courses are paid for by their employer.

• If you are a registered employer, you should contact FÁS as the fees you pay for your employees’ courses may be reclaimable in part through re-training grants or tax incentives.

• Consider the money spent on your continuing education as an investment in your future. Visit your bank or credit union and convince them of this.

• Tax relief is available on a number of our courses; please see course descriptions for more information.

• In some cases students have received help in paying from Partnership Boards, Enterprise Boards, Department of Social Welfare and FÁS (those on CE schemes).

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY

The Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) was established by the Irish Government on 11 June 2001, under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999, as the awarding body for third-level education and training institutions outside the university sector. It is the successor in this role to the National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA) which played its part in the economic development of the country for more than a quarter of a century. ABOUT THE COURSE

PROGRESSION

If you are interested in a career in management and in understanding organisations and their performance, the BA (Hons) in Business Studies could be the programme for you.

The course addresses the core functional areas of business – accounting, economics, finance, human resources, information technology and marketing. Students will learn how the ever-changing business environment is influenced by a host of internal and external factors. The hands-on project work that is a feature of continuous assessment means students will develop the confidence to create and implement their ideas.

Graduates who see an opportunity to make themselves more attractive to employers may want to consider the Masters programme in business. The Griffith College Graduate Business School offers a portfolio of programmes in International Business Management, each of which provides a route to the award of MBA. Such programmes are available on a part-time and full-time basis, allowing graduates the flexibility to work while continuing their studies.

The course syllabus, developed by GCC and validated by HETAC, reflects the multiple requirements of today’s business world. The participation and support of full-time and external lecturing staff, and a wide range of industries, has made a vital contribution to the degree’s content.

ABOUT THE COURSE Participants on the course will obtain a thorough grounding in marketing and the communication methods used in business.

Students learn through the use of creative advertising and public relations campaigns, undertaking case studies and practising sales techniques. Students also complete a project involving all four areas of study to acquire a practical understanding of this field. The course is examined by one three-hour exam for each subject and one project.

ABOUT THE COURSE

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

This programme, which is divided into five modules within one academic year, is designed to provide a practical grounding in the skills of management. This programme is particularly suited to the aspiring or newly appointed manager, the section leader, the self-employed and those interested in enhancing personal performance.

Management Principles The three levels of strategic management are covered in this module: corporate, business and functional. The decision- making process will be applied to each of these.

Business Communications

Participants can elect to attend individual modules and on completion of a satisfactory assignment an ICM Single Subject Diploma will be awarded. Alternatively, they may take all five subjects, thus allowing them to qualify for the ICM Diploma in Management Studies.

Participants build confidence in their communication skills by applying effective presentation methods to simulated business situations.

Human Resource Management The management of staff and related activities in a modern organisation as well an understanding of motivational factors and leadership skills will be covered.

Marketing & Sales Management The skills and knowledge necessary for the motivation and management of an effective marketing/sales function will be acquired.

Interpreting Financial Information Participants will become familiar with basic accounting principles so that they can interpret and use financial data.

TEACHING METHODS Academic excellence combines knowledge acquisition with refinement of the skills to apply it. At Griffith College Law School we use a variety of teaching methods in that twin pursuit. The traditional lecture is important, but comprises relatively few classroom hours in a learning style that combines tutorials, group work, discussion, project work, web-based learning and independent study.

Much of your study will be work undertaken on your own initiative – reading and thinking about issues in case reports, statutory materials and periodicals. Core module textbooks are provided as part of the course fee, with a personal tutor to advise you on organising your private study. You’ll be well-equipped and in good hands!

Training in oral advocacy and mooting is essential for law students, whether they wish to become barristers or otherwise. The ability to formulate legal information in a structured presentation is essential for related work in your later professional life. SEMESTERISATION

Students participate in internal, national and international moot trial and debating competitions. In 2009 Griffith College Cork was very pleased to launch its very own Debating Society and Law Society. Law School students also perfect their written advocacy skills by writing articles for one of the Griffith student newspapers, or the Law School’s academic journal, the Independent Law Review.

All courses offered by the law school are delivered on a semesterised basis, enabling students to better handle a diversity of subjects. Together with continuous assessment, it also helps students retain a constant focus on their work. So what’s in it for you?

At the outset, graduating with an LLB degree will position you for the Law Society of Ireland’s entrance examinations and, if successful, to undertake some further study and qualify as a solicitor. Alternatively, as a graduate you can also apply to sit the Honorable Society of King’s Inns’ Entrance Examinations. Success in those five entrance exams enables you to complete the Honorable Society of King’s Inns’ Barrister at Law degree in one year. CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA COURSES IN PROFESSIONAL LEGAL STUDIES THE IRISH INSTITUTE OF LEGAL EXECUTIVES AND GRIFFITH COLLEGE Legal Executives assist in the processing of legal matters with solicitors, barristers, in the Courts of Ireland and within other areas of commercial and legal practice. They undertake their work according to professional standards of integrity and conduct as required by the law of the Republic of Ireland, by the legal profession and by the Code of Rules of the Irish Institute of Legal Executives.

Qualified legal executives are employed in private practice, in the legal departments of banks and public or local authorities, as well as in industry and commerce. Working to a large extent as part of a legal team, some legal executives may specialise in areas such as conveyancing, pensions, property, civil litigation and insurance claims. Typically, as a graduate in employment you’ll assist in the preparation, analysis and interpretation of a variety of legal documents and may prepare and file court documents. The range of activities also includes attending counsel and legal research.

This programme is offered by Griffith College in conjunction with the Irish Institute of Legal Executives. COURSE MATERIALS Detailed manuals covering each area of academic study are provided at the commencement of the term. These manuals minimise the need for note-taking and enable a tutorial style approach to be taken in lectures.

A ‘distance learning’ course delivery option is also available for this programme. Each distance learning student receives a full set of course materials for each module undertaken, and is assigned a course tutor who will correct homework on a weekly basis. All courses that are validated by external bodies enjoy national and international recognition.

What time do evening classes commence and end?

Lectures for most courses are delivered three evenings per week, typically from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Students may also choose to take subjects at their own pace as family or work commitments dictate.

ABOUT THE COURSE This postgraduate programme delivers a comprehensive syllabus of media skills. It is designed to equip students with the key practical competencies needed to work in a professional media environment today along with the critical academic depth of a post graduate qualification.

During the course students will be challenged in real journalistic situations including producing articles to deadline, editing, designing and printing newspapers, magazines or creating online news content. Radio skills from recording and editing interviews, creating podcasts and running a radio station are part of the course work in this programme.

Students can also choose a range of media specialisms including TV journalism where students shoot, edit and present their own news package as well as: Sports Journalism, Photojournalism, Conflict Reporting, Public Relations and Online Media.

Acquiring key media skills is one aspect of the course. Mastering them involves developing a critical depth through an understanding of essential media, communications and sociological theories.

Intelligence, Attainment The concept of intelligence; is it genetic or a product of the environment?

Educational Psychology Another practical area for child psychologists is the area of schooling and education and how they are involved in best practice in education as well as educational intervention.

Ecology of Development: Context and Ireland The last lecture looks at tools for deconstructing the environment that the child develops. It considers ‘context’ as important to development. The place of children in Irish society is a core dimension to this lecture.

This intensive course aims to provide students with a broad-based foundation in the study of Psychology. EUCIP is a foundation qualification for a range of computing jobs across all sectors. The programme was developed by CEPIS, the Council of European Professional Informatics Professionals who also developed the ECDL. ABOUT THIS COURSE

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

The Limpert’s Academy Diploma course is aimed at those who have an aptitude and keen interest in the area of domestic interior design and is above the level of a basic course.

This course is made up of 6 modules that have been broken down into 20 lessons. There is an assignment to complete at the end of each lesson. At the end of the course, students complete a Final Project, which will involve designing and presenting an interior scheme for a domestic setting.

The course is aimed at preparing interior design students to work in the domestic market. ABOUT THIS COURSE The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is an internationally recognised professional body that supports over 155,000 students and members in 158 countries. CIMA is responsible for the education and qualification of Chartered Management Accountants who work in all business sectors, in roles both within and outside finance.

The learning and skills developed from the five modules in the Certificate in Business Accounting will equip students with the fundamental business and accounting knowledge required to achieve outstanding performance in the workplace. As an introduction to the world of finance it is a recognised qualification in its own right.

It can also be used as a stepping stone to the CIMA Professional Qualification.

FURTHER STUDY On completion of this programme, students can further their professional management accounting education with CIMA’s Professional Qualification and Griffith College’s School of Professional Accountancy.

COMPUTER BASED EXAMINATIONS ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & EXEMPTIONS Entry to the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting is open to all. All that is required is to be competent in Mathematics and English (written & spoken).

The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting can be entered at any stage of a student’s career, straight from school, after university or to make a career change. If you are entering the Certificate in Business Accounting after university or you have completed an accounting technician qualification, you may be eligible for exemptions from one of more of the modules.

Exemptions are granted by CIMA on registration.

All five papers of the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting are tested by Computer Based Assessment which can be sat at GCC as well as other centres around Europe. Students are required to score 50% to pass each examination.

The Leinster School of Music & Drama (LSMD) was founded in 1904 to promote the teaching and examining of music to exacting standards. In 1998 the LSMD relocated to Griffith College Dublin becoming a fully owned constituent School of the College. Since then it has continued its teaching and examining activities with the support of the College. Currently there is a large network of teachers nationwide teaching the LSMD’s various syllabi and preparing students for examination, with approximately 14,000 students and teachers being examined annually. This programme is designed for the contemporary practitioner in instrumental music education, whether teaching in a school or running a practice or studio. In today’s society, a career in music education requires a broad range of disparate skills: a high level of mastery in performance; a thorough knowledge of music theory; an understanding of the theory of music teaching and learning and a practical working knowledge of music technology. Furthermore, music teachers require skills in management, business and arts organisation, as their work often takes them outside of the classroom through organising concerts, competitions and stage shows.
