1884 George Skerry founded Skerry’s Cork Business School.

The site was originally known as Grimswood Nurseries.

1813 The first buildings on the site were those of a Remand Prison or Bridewell.

1835 In 1835 it became a male penitentiary – The Richmond Pen.

1844 1887 In 1887 it was transferred to the War Department. In this era it was known as Wellington Barracks after the Duke of Wellington.

1916 In 1916, Eamonn de Valera was imprisoned here while the other 1916 leaders were court marshalled and executed in Kilmainham Jail.

The Business and Accounting Training College is established to bring a higher standard to independent business colleges. Today our text books are in use in a growing number of other third level colleges.

1943 The College was taken over by Mr McCarthy who founded the College’s core tradition of fulfilling the particular training requirements of modern day business.

1977

Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, together with his son John, James Stephens and ‘honest’ Tom Steele were amongst its many famous historical prisoners.

The College was purchased by the Carey family and the official opening of the new premises was performed by An Taoiseach, Mr Jack Lynch, a former student of the College.

1914

2002

During the first World War it was used as a recruiting and training centre for many of the Irish soldiers who fought in the British Army.

The HSI group based in Limerick purchased Skerry’s College under the direction of Chairman, Mr Michael McNamara.

1922 1974

The change from Wellington Barracks to Griffith Barracks occurred in April 1922 when it became one of the first to be handed over to the Irish Free State and was renamed by the Army Council after Arthur Griffith.

1992 The present site was acquired and refurbishment began. Griffith College and its extended campus now forms the largest site of any independent college in Ireland.

The information contained in this prospectus is intended as a guide for persons seeking admission to the College. Griffith College Cork reserves the right to change any of the details and validation bodies given in this brochure. Course commencement is dependent on student demand.

Griffith College Cork

2005 Griffith College acquired Skerry’s Business School. An LLB (Hons) in Irish Law and a BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance were among some of the new courses introduced.

2006 Griffith College expand their Journalism and Media Communications Faculty to Cork where a BA in Journalism is offered.

2008 The first set of students in Cork graduate from the Griffith College programmes in LLB (Hons) in Irish Law, BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, Higher Diploma in Journalism and BA in Marketing.

2009 The College moves from St Patrick’s Hill to the former CBS buildings on Cove St, Sullivan’s Quay in Cork city

ABOUT THIS COURSE

PROGRESSION

Law is a highly focused discipline; it examines how groups and individuals regulate their relationships and while studying law you learn to think conceptually about a broad number of basic principles.

Graduating with an LLB degree will position you for The Law Society of Ireland’s entrance examinations, and, if successful, to undertake some further study and qualify as a solicitor.

The LLB (Hons) in Irish Law is validated by HETAC and Nottingham Trent University. It combines legal training to industry standards with all the necessary depth. Core modules of the entrance examinations for both The Law Society of Ireland and the Honorable Society of King’s Inns’ are covered within the LLB degree. Students are assessed by written coursework and end of semester exams.

Alternatively, as an LLB graduate you can apply to sit the Honorable Society of King’s Inns’ Entrance Examinations. Success in those five entrance examinations enables you to complete the Honorable Society of King’s Inns’ Barrister at Law degree in one year.

The full-time degree consists of lectures and tutorials with some 16 lecture hours per week. Extra time is allocated to the vital independent study that provides you with practical exposure to problem-solving. The part-time degree consists of 10 weekly lecture hours over three evenings. The evening LLB is typically three years in duration but as a part-time student you also have the flexibility to complete the programme over four or five years, and so help accommodate your personal or work commitments.

It is also possible for law graduates to proceed to postgraduate study for a Master in Laws (LLM). Griffith College offer LLM programmes to students in Cork and Dublin. The LLB degree can also lead to stimulating career opportunities across a range of areas such as journalism, media, finance, public administration, industry and commerce. Comprehensive, rigorous and enduring, the LLB (Hons) in Irish Law is the perfect choice for your legal career.

ABOUT THIS COURSE The LL.M. (Master of Laws) is an internationally recognised postgraduate law degree. It is obtained by completing a one-year full-time programme. Many law firms prefer job candidates with an LL.M. degree because it indicates that a lawyer has acquired advanced, specialised legal training, and is qualified to work in a multinational legal environment. The three LL.Ms on offer in Griffith College allow students to focus on an aspect of law that is of particular interest to them; International Law, Human Rights and Commercial Law. However, opportunities for specialisation go beyond just selecting one of these options, as all three are sub-divided to afford students an even greater range of choices. This is particularly true of the LL.M General: a student could take a human rights specialisation, or a commercial specialisation (to take two random examples) within this programme. The LL.M has three separate streams to it and students can attain any one of three LL.Ms :

• • •

6. EU Law 7. Corporate Governance

LL.M in International Law LL.M in International Human Rights Law LL.M in International Commercial Law

8. Public International Law 9. International Human Rights Law 10. Comparative Freedom of Expression 11. Gender, Sex and Identity

The LL.M will be over one year in duration and will give the student exciting choices between various human rights and commercial subjects. To complete the LL.M successfully the student will have to do three subjects per semester with the added requirement of a dissertation. A sample of the subjects are: 1. International Trade Law 2. International Commercial Arbitration and Dispute Resolution 3. International Intellectual Property Law 4. International Tax Law 5. International Financial Services Law

14

12. International Criminal Law 13. International Asylum and Refugee Law

Students are also be required to do an Introductory International Legal Systems and Practice module in first semester as well as a Legal Writing and Research Workshop. CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL LEGAL STUDIES THE IRISH INSTITUTE OF LEGAL EXECUTIVES AND GRIFFITH COLLEGE Legal Executives assist in the processing of legal matters with solicitors, barristers, in the Courts of Ireland and within other areas of commercial and legal practice. They undertake their work according to professional standards of integrity and conduct as required by the law of the Republic of Ireland, by the legal profession and by the Code of Rules of the Irish Institute of Legal Executives. Qualified legal executives are employed in private practice, in the legal departments of banks and public or local authorities, as well as in industry and commerce. Working to a large extent as part of a legal team, some legal executives may specialize in areas such as conveyancing, pensions, property, civil litigation and insurance claims. Typically, as a graduate in employment you’ll assist in the preparation, analysis and interpretation of a variety of legal documents and may prepare and file court documents. The range of activities also includes attending counsel and legal research. This programme is offered by Griffith College in conjunction with the Irish Institute of Legal Executives. While it aims to provide you with an academic grounding in the traditional core legal subjects, it maintains a focus on the practical application of these legal principles in the work environment of the legal executive.

COURSE PROFILE Griffith College Professional Law School offers this course on a part-time basis over two years. A Certificate in Professional Legal Studies will be awarded on successful completion of the first year, with a Diploma in Professional Legal Studies being awarded on successful completion of the second year. You’ll be assured of a highly supportive environment throughout your studies. Diploma graduates are eligible for enrolment as Associate Members of the Irish Institute of Legal Executives, and all participants are eligible to become Student Members of the Institute.

COURSE MATERIALS Detailed manuals covering each area of academic study are provided at the commencement of the term. These manuals minimize the need for note-taking and enable a tutorial style approach to be taken in lectures.

DISTANCE LEARNING A ‘distance learning’ course delivery option is also available for this programme. Each distance learning student receives a full set of course materials for each module undertaken, and is assigned a course tutor who will correct homework on a weekly basis. Distance learning students are invited to attend lectures on campus in the first (orientation) week.

TUITION Six subjects are taken in Stage One and in Stage Two.

ADMISSION Admission to the programme is at the discretion of the Irish Institute of Legal Executives and Griffith College Cork.

DURATION The course is taught over two years, in two stages.

PREPARATORY COURSE FOR THE HONORABLE SOCIETY OF KING’S INNS’ ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

PART ONE (ENTRANCE EXAMINATION – FE1) Geared to the specific examination papers set by the Law Society of Ireland, the Griffith College Professional Law School’s 14-week FE1 Preparation Course is both intensive and practical. Against a background of unequalled quality in materials, notes and facilities, underpinned by outstanding, supportive lecturers, you’re assured an environment whose pathfinding spirit will direct your focus not simply to succeed, but to excel. Locations: Cork & Distance Learning

COURSE PROFILE The Final Examination - First Part is the entrance examination to the Law Society of Ireland. Only those who have passed or gained exemption from the Preliminary Examination can sit this examination which is held twice each year, normally in summer and autumn. The FE1 examination reflects eight papers in the following subject areas:

• European Union Law • Constitutional Law • Criminal Law • Law of Tort

• Equity & Trusts • Company Law • Law of Contract • Real Property

Lectures incorporate past question and sample answer sessions, while assignments and class tests remain critical components to building your capability to analyse complex problems and to arrive at rational and informed conclusions. You will receive personalised assessment of your coursework throughout the duration of the course, while classwork and homework is set and corrected weekly. An end-of-course mock examination provides a disciplined mechanism against which to apply and measure your accumulated learning. The Griffith College Professional Law School’s FE1 (Final Examination – Part One) Preparation Course has become the most popular FE1 Preparation Course in the country, with an outstanding reputation founded on dedicated, talented lecturers and focused examination materials.

COURSE SCHEDULE Programmes run from June to September and from November to March each year, with tuition provided for all eight FE1 subjects. Course delivery carries a range of options for students: • Choice of Evening or Weekend Courses (or a combination of both) • Distance Learning • Full timetable and lecturing panel available on www.gcc.ie

Highly-intensive tuition is provided for all five entrance examination subjects:

Friday 10:00am to 12:30pm This course is accredited by HETAC as a Certificate in VAT Techniques, Level 6 Special Category Award.

ABOUT THIS COURSE The IPASS Certified VAT Technician (CVT) qualification is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the operation of the Irish VAT system. Value Added Tax (VAT) is the single largest tax liability which most companies incur and the single largest source of tax recoveries on Revenue audits. Yet the people responsible for the management and administration of their company’s VAT liabilities often have to do so with the benefit of minimal (if any) specialist VAT training.

The course assumes no prior knowledge of VAT on the part of students and it introduces them in a logical and progressive manner to the VAT implications and treatment of a huge range of business transactions. Starting with first principles, the course explains the basic principles of the Irish VAT system, for all kinds of businesses from sole traders to multinational organisations and includes State and semi-State bodies and VAT exempt institutions.

Students will receive a comprehensive course manual written in non technical language, which explains in detail, the workings of the Irish VAT system and which contains numerous practical examples and exercises.

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS Professional Development: The Certified VAT Technician will greatly enhance a student’s career prospects by providing certification of their expertise in a hugely important tax. Education: Students will enhance their knowledge and their confidence with a valuable qualification in a subject which is of huge importance to employers. Contacts and Networking: Through their studies, students will meet a large number of fellow students, which will allow them to develop a network of contacts in a range of businesses. IPASS Membership: As an IPASS member, students will be entitled to a range of benefits and discounts on IPASS courses, seminars and publications.

BENEFITS TO EMPLOYERS The operation of the Irish VAT system is of huge importance to all companies. Properly trained and suitably qualified staff will lead to a more efficient operation of your company’s VAT affairs and will also reduce, or minimise, the cost of expensive VAT consultancy services.

ASSESSMENT Students must successfully complete both Part 1 and Part 2 of the CVT course. Exams are held for each part, twice yearly, in December and in May, with repeat exams being held in August and February. Irish Payroll Association (IPASS) Website: www.ipass.ie

ABOUT THE COURSE

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

The Limpert’s Academy Diploma course is aimed at those who have an aptitude and keen interest in the area of domestic interior design and is above the level of a basic course.

This course is made up of 6 modules that have been broken down into 20 lessons. There is an assignment to complete at the end of each lesson. At the end of the course, students complete a Final Project, which will involve designing and presenting an interior scheme for a domestic setting.

The course is aimed at preparing interior design students to work in the domestic market. It explores the key aspects of interior design so that students will obtain a firm understanding of the fundamentals of design, and will be sufficiently prepared to work in the industry. By the end of the course students will have the knowledge and skills needed to enter the workplace. Assignments completed during the course will form an impressive portfolio for students to show to employers and potential clients. Students taking this course should note that it is a very intensive course and at least nine additional hours of research and study are required each week

Modules COLOUR STYLE & DESIGN SURFACE FINISHES CURTAINS, BLINDS & SOFT FURNISHINGS LIGHTING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Graduate Profile Anthony Lingwood What attracted me to this course was the in-depth and practical hands-on approach, which focuses directly on the actuality of working within the design industry. I found this approach to be very helpful as it allows for individual style and working methods to develop, while showing how the more technical areas would relate to real-life situations. Having a highly skilled design professional to tutor the course is a great feature, and the advice and guidance has been invaluable throughout.

ABOUT THE COURSE

CORE SUBJECTS

This programme is designed for the contemporary practitioner in instrumental music education, whether teaching in a school or running a practice or studio. In today’s society, a career in music education requires a broad range of disparate skills: a high level of mastery in performance; a thorough knowledge of music theory; an understanding of the theory of music teaching and learning and a practical working knowledge of music technology. Furthermore, music teachers require skills in management, business and arts organisation, as their work often takes them outside of the classroom through organising concerts, competitions and stage shows.

Pedagogy and Teaching Practice Theory of Teaching and Learning Psychology of Music Education Professional Practice Practical Musicianship Music Technology Conducting and Composition

The programme recognises that music education has to be relevant to young and mature learners, and to their ethnic culture, life experience and the popular culture to which they are exposed. To this end the programme will facilitate and encourage performance in several genres – classical, traditional, non-Western, jazz and popular music.

Course Entry Requirements: (students must fulfil one of the following)

Duration Full-time

1. A primary degree in music.

1 year

Part-time 1.5 years
