Welcome Welcome to a new troop year! We are looking forward to all the exciting adventures that girls will take this year in Girl Scouts. Please be sure to check out all the details in this program calendar. There are many events offered to give girls a variety of experiences. Plus we work hard to make events affordable. It is important to make sure to include your girls in the decision making and plans for your troop. We also encourage troops to participate in the product programs. There are many skills that girls gain by participating in fall product and cookies programs such as goal setting, entrepreneurial skills, money management and more. And by participating in product programs, your troop can earn funds to help pay for the great programs offered in this calendar. We would like to welcome Stephanie Allen to our Metro staff. Stephanie will be handling all program and training registrations for Metro. You can reach Stephanie at sallen@kyanags.org or at 636-0900 ext. 20000. When you come to visit the Metro Service Center, Stephanie will be at the first desk as you enter. New this year: Our Metro Media newsletter will be sent free of charge to all 01 troop leaders, service unit managers and Juliettes. This is made affordable by the ad sales from area vendors who support Girl Scouting. If you are not a troop leader, service unit manager or Juliette, you can still purchase a subscription for $10.00 for the troop year and your newsletter will be mailed to your home. The Metro Media includes upcoming program events for girls, important product program details, upcoming trainings for volunteers, family and community partnership details and council news. Also new this year: We are creating a database of individual adults that have special talents and skills such as canoeing, archery, etc. that would be willing to share with other troops, service units, etc. If you are one of these special people please send your name, contact number, e-mail, and how you want others to contact you to Jennifer Court and we will publish a list of talents and skills in upcoming Adult Education and Program Calendars. Council-Sponsored Product Programs The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana provides two program opportunities for troops and Juliettes to earn needed funds for activities. Girls who participate in these programs learn important skills to help them face real life challenges. These learned skills are lessons money can’t buy. Through Girl Scout Product Programs, girls learn goal setting, marketing, money-management, sales skills, leadership and teamwork; skills they will need to be successful in their future endeavors.

Fall Product Program The Fall Product Program is held during the months of October and November. It is a multi-part program meant to involve friends and families only. Step 1 is the Nut & Candy sale through Ashdon Farms. Step 2 is address booklets and Step 3 is the sale of magazine subscriptions, books and CDs through QSP.

Benefits of the Fall Product Program:    

Three ways to earn money (nuts & candy, QSP, address books) Girls can earn patches and other incentives for participating Troop money, or Program Bucks for Juliettes, enable girls to pay for activities, take trips, buy badges, etc. The funds raised from the Fall Product Program are used primarily for our camp properties; to renovate buildings, purchase equipment, upgrade the properties and improve trails. Most importantly it allows you and your girls to use any of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana’s seven camp properties at greatly discounted rates.

Cookie Program The Cookie Program is held each year during the months of January - March. Much more than a way to raise money, the Cookie Program is a hands-on leadership and entrepreneurial program. Leadership learning is built into the Cookie Program with experiences designed for each grade level of Girl Scouting. Girls learn skills, not from a book, but from real-life experiences; skills that will last long after the Cookie Program ends. During January, girls can test their sales and leadership skills by selling cookies to family members, friends and neighbors. In late February and early March, girls have the opportunity to use their entrepreneurial skills to directly sell from cookie booths at local businesses.

Benefits of the Cookie Program: 

From practicing telephone presentations to creating a successful marketing plan, girls learn valuable skills such as goal setting, marketing techniques, financial literacy, problemsolving, leadership and self-confidence.



Troop funds, and Juliette Program Bucks, give girls opportunities for fun and learning and to change the world through community service.



Girls can earn patches and a wide range of incentives as rewards for their hard work.



In addition to direct benefits to troops and girls, funds raised through the cookie program enable Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana to provide discounted programs and events for girls, and training and development opportunities for volunteers.

Shopper’s Reward Card Program Starts August 16th! For every $20 you spend in any Kentuckiana Girl Scout Shop between August 16th and November 19th, you will receive one stamp. 10 stamps fill the card. Full cards can be redeemed between January 3rd and March 31st for a $20 credit on any retail purchase of $20 or more.

Policies: 

     

Troops, groups and individual Girl Scouts can sign up for any program provided that they meet the grade level requirement. Girls who are not currently registered Girl Scouts may attend our programs by paying the $12 membership fee in addition to any program costs. A completed Girl Scout registration form should accompany the program registration form in these cases. Girls bridging to the next grade level can participate in programs for their next level to satisfy bridging requirements. Programs fill up quickly, so please register early. Advance registration is required for all programs and events. Money will not be accepted at the door. Be sure to include “Free” adults on your form. Registration will close two weeks before the event date unless otherwise noted. We will send a confirmation after we receive your registration. If the program is full, you will be notified and either offered an alternate event date, or issued a refund. Please register for events responsibly. Capacity is limited for all events, so please be mindful that your reserved space may take an opportunity away from someone else. Only the number of persons accounted for on your registration form - girls and adults -will be allowed to attend a program. Space, staffing and materials are all prepared in advance for the number of people registered. If you bring additional people, they will be asked to wait outside the event.

General Information: 

Please check Safety-Wise and the new publication Safety Activity Checkpoints (SAC) for the correct girl/adult ratios for your grade level. Leaders are responsible for maintaining the correct girl/adult ratios and meeting other Safety-Wise/SAC guidelines. Please make sure you have your girls’ health records with you when you attend a program.  Adults are to serve as leaders/chaperones, not as participants at events and programs.  In the event of inclement weather, a decision to hold or cancel an event will be made at least two hours before the scheduled start time. Your troop will be notified by phone if a program is to be cancelled. You may also check the websites of local television stations for cancellations.  All adults chaperoning overnight events must be registered as a Girl Scout member and have a completed volunteer application on file at the Metro Service Center office.

Financial Aid:

Limited financial aid is available for Service Center and Council events. One completed financial aid form per person should be turned in with the event registration form. We ask participants to pay what they can toward the event fee. Confirmation will be sent if financial aid is granted. If financial aid is given for an event and the person “no shows” for that event, that person/ parent will be expected to repay the amount of the financial aid within 30 days.

Refund Policy:

Refunds will be issued if a program is cancelled or in the event of an illness or family emergency only. All refund requests must be submitted in advance utilizing the Program Cancellation Form with appropriate documentation attached. There are no refunds for “no shows.” In the event of weather related cancellations—troops will be offered the reschedule date before a refund will be issued. If the program/event takes place and your troop decides not to attend - no refund will be issued.

Tagalongs:

Please plan to make other arrangements for tagalongs. Tagalongs are any child under 18 not the designated age for the event (infants, toddlers, older or younger siblings - including Girl Scouts, are all considered tagalongs.) Tagalongs are not permitted at most Girl Scout programs, and adults who bring them will be asked to remain outside the program. 7

Hoe Down Throw Down

Join us as we kick-off the new troop year in style at the Hoe Down Throw Down! Girls will enjoy western themed activities including a DJ for dancing. Tons of activity stations, souvenirs, door prizes and a light meal will be included. Troop leaders - bring your troop’s 2011 registration forms to drop-off at the event. The Girl Scout Shop will be on-site, so make sure your girls bring their Cookie Dough! Girls interested in joining or finding out more about Girl Scouting are encouraged to attend. KaLightoscope Christmas Weekend & Overnight

KaLightoscope Christmas is a one of a kind holiday event that invites you to experience Christmas like never before! Make a Picture for Your Fingertips

Brownies

Girl Scout Brownies will learn how and why pictures are made to read by touch. Girls will use special paper and materials to create an instant touch picture to take home. What is D.A.W.G.S.? It stands for Design and Assembly of Wheelchairs with Girl Scouts! This event, sponsored by a grant from ExxonMobil, teaches girls about engineering while allowing them a chance to provide service for some very special clients from the University of Louisville Canine Rehabilitation and Biomechanics Laboratory. Yes - Dogs! Girls will first brainstorm and design a wheelchair for dogs who have limited mobility due to illness or injury. Then, working with volunteers from the Society of Women Engineers, Girl Scouts will work through the phases of design from identifying the problems to design and testing. Finally, girls will use technical drawings to construct the canine wheelchair with materials that will be provided. Visit the INBioparque and learn about biological diversity at this theme park and research station. Enjoy a visit to the Poas Volcano, kayak on Lake Arenal, spend an afternoon with an optional horseback ride in the Monteverde Reserve, take a canopy zip line tour over the rain forest, plant a tree in a nature preserve, and much more. London, Paris and Lucerne: A Girl Scout Journey

8th Grade & Up

How will you celebrate the 100 birthday of Girl Scouting? How about joining us for an exciting 10-day European adventure? We’ll spend three days in London, where we will enjoy visits to the Tower of London, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Windsor Castle, the London Eye, and more. We will also spend a day at Pax Lodge, one of the four WAGGGS World Centers. Then it’s off to Paris for three days of sightseeing including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe and much more. An optional excursion to Versailles is also available during our stay in Paris. On day seven, we say goodbye to Paris and head to Adelboden, Switzerland, the home of Our Chalet. Our next day takes us to a program at Our Chalet, another of the WAGGGS World Centers where we’ll meet Girl Guides from around the world as we enjoy a day high in the Swiss Alps. Our final day includes guided sightseeing of Lucerne, and an optional excursion to Mount Pilatus. We head back to the USA the next day with lots of great memories of our European Girl Scout Journey! An optional three or four day stay-behind will also be offered, but we need girls to tell us where else they would like to visit. Italy? Germany? The possibilities are endless!
