The unfaltering elegance of our Royal brides over the years has added billions of pounds to the UK fashion industry
T
he 'Kate Effect’ has given many British designers, like Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and Catherine Walker, exponential kudos, along with numerous high street brands who have topped the regal mark and swiftly sold out of whatever garment the Duchess of Cambridge had chosen to wear as she makes her royal visits around the world. Across the years, British designers have been thrust to the forefront as we gather in earnest to see ‘who’ a royal bride will be wearing as she steps out into the crowds on her wedding day. Queen Victoria, who wed Prince Albert at the Chapel Royal, St James’ Palace in February 1840, made the white wedding popular when she wore a white dress of heavy silk satin, made by
Victoria’s, rather elusive, personal dressmaker, Mary Bettans. It was delightfully trimmed with handmade lace from Honiton in Devon. The lace, designed by William Dyce (head of what later became the Royal College of Art), showed enormous support for British cottage industry for lace-making at the time. When the Queen Mother, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, married in 1923, her wedding dress, in ivory chiffon, embroidered with pearls and silver thread, was designed by court dress maker Madame Handley Seymour, and was a nod to the simple, elegant designs by Coco Chanel. By 1947, when Queen Elizabeth II married the Duke of Edinburgh at Westminster Abbey in London, 6 | Royal Edition 2018
the London fashion scene had become known for being a centre of innovation for nearly a decade. Norman Hartnell was the leading fashion designer at the time, and the soft Damascus Prokar dress he designed for Queen Elizabeth was decorated with elaborate floral embroidery, crystals and seed pearls. Thirteen years later, Princess Margaret too, used the skilful eye of Norman Hartnell and stepped out into the spotlight in 30 meters of silk organza - its simplicity has marked it in history as; ‘one of Hartnell’s most beautiful and sophisticated pieces.’
In July 1981, the world watched in awe as Lady Diana Spencer stepped out of her glass carriage awash with 275 yards of pearl studded silk taffeta, tulle and netting. Her dress, along with its 25-foot-long train, made its designers - David and Elizabeth Emmanuelle household names. When Prince Charles married again, to Camilla Parker Bowles, his new bride chose Antonia Robinson and Anne Valentine to design the cream silk chiffon two-piece, and turned to Phillip Treacy for her statement ivory French lace and feathers headpiece. When Kate Middleton arrived at the steps of Westminster Abbey in April 2011 wearing a Victorian inspired dress made by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, we all delighted in its splendour. The bodice design gestured to the lace style of the 19th Century and was adorned with beautiful floral motifs appliquéd on to tulle. The 58 buttons at the back were made of gazar and organza and fastened into loops as soft pleats of British ivory and white satin fabric unfolded to the floor. Unlike her late motherin-law, the Duchess of Cambridge’s bridal train measured just under 3 metres in length.
This May, the world watched the union of Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle, and in the most awaited wedding dress of the year, Meghan wore an exquisite, traditional dress by British designer Clare Waight Keller, for Givenchy. There were no flounces of tulle and organza, no Hollywood glam or sparkle, just a simple white gown made of silk crepe, and featuring a bateau neckline and three quarter length sleeves. The stand-out piece of Meghan's dress was her 6ft long veil; adorned with Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, lent to her by the Queen, and the lace edge intricately embroidered with a flower for each of the 53 Commonwealth countries.

Amanda Wakeley; The Wedding Dress
I
conic London-based luxury lifestyle brand, Amanda Wakeley, has dressed some of the most stylish women on the planet - their effortless, sexy, clean-cut lines have inspired women from Beyonce and Florence Welch to Oscar-winning Helen Mirren and Angelina Jolie. They’ve dressed many members of Royal families, most notably the late Princess of Wales, Queen Rania of Jordan and most recently The Duchess of Cambridge. Their striking bridal collection has taken the wedding dress to another level, blending timeless elegance with contemporary design. After visiting their bridal boutique on Fulham Road, you can’t help but feel the magic of choosing a wedding gown as you enjoy a glass or two of Champagne; your very own bridal stylist guiding you through every dress and every exquisite detail. If you’ve never been interested in fabrics and how they fit or fall; or how the beading and embellishments catch the light, then this is where fabrics will inspire and delight every new bride, without fail.
Where does Amanda Wakeley Bridal find its inspiration? Our latest collection fuses decadent vintage romance and contemporary detailing, offering beautiful designs that are as at home on a sundrenched beach as they are in the most impressive cathedral or country house. Lingerie and corsetry references are translated into exquisite underpinnings, with graphic lines sitting beautifully under layers of delicately embroidered tulle and lace.
Your lace and beadwork is exquisite; how long does it take to create a dress from those initial designs to the final garment? Thank you! We’re dedicated to sourcing the most exquisite fabrics that have been specifically developed for the Wakeley bride. Intricate embellishments are designed in-house; where we map out every detail before they’re handed over the wonderful artisans who lovingly hand embroider them, so the time it takes depends on the dress.
10 | Royal Edition 2018
What’s your most popular dress? The Alena. It features a delicate French lace bodice adorned with corded embroidery appliqués, developed in-house from handdrawn florals, alongside raw-cut pleated georgette and exquisite pearl and crystal embellishment.
The bridal gown is an extension of the bride’s personality; how do you help the bride choose the gown and ‘look’ for her? By listening to her during those initial conversations, understanding who she is and making sure she’s the best version of herself on her wedding day.
What are your do’s and dont's of wedding gown hunting? Give yourself time. We’d recommend 9 to 12 months before the wedding. Don’t visit more than four designers, as there is the risk of losing enthusiasm after trying on too many dresses. Select 5 or 6 dresses per store then narrow down to 2. When you’ve found your dream dress, do not continue to try on other dresses just ‘in case’.
It’s become quite popular for a large bridal party to accompany the bride to her wedding fittings – is this beneficial? It is beneficial when they understand the bride’s vision and listen to her before giving opinions. Two is the perfect number.
Do all brides have that ‘moment’ when they try on a dress and know it’s the one? Most brides have this moment, for others it’s about identifying what they don’t want from their dress.
“Every time a bride finds her dream dress with us is a highlight! The day she collects her dress ready for the big day can be very emotional.”

Royal Ascot Style Guide: ‘Be as bold as your hat.’
T
he Oxford English dictionary definition of ‘ascot’, is ‘a man’s broad silk necktie.’ Up until the Edwardian period, the ascot, a decorative finishing touch to a gentleman’s tailored morning dress and much alike the cravat, was an essential part of the gentry’s wardrobe, to be worn on the luscious green lawns of the Royal Ascot Racecourse. The present relationship between the historic racecourse and timelessly elegant high end fashion can be traced back as early as 1768, when the first Royal meeting at Ascot took place. It was said that ladies could
be seen parading their extravagant and stylish floor length gowns, showcasing the best and brightest sides of their personalities. By the 1860s, Consuela, Duchess of Marlborough remarked that she found Ascot week, ‘very tiring… [and] fortunes were yearly spent on dresses selected as appropriate to a graduated scale of elegance.’ Ultimately, Royal Ascot was, and continues to be, a particular highlight in the British social calendar; an excuse for one to ‘dress to impress. The imposition of a strict dress code for all the attendees of Royal Ascot dates back to the Regency era, particularly for those aristocrats who received an invitation to the Royal Enclosure The 19th Century dandy, Beau Brummell played a major part in transforming the yearly horse racing event into something which saw many people pay greater attention to that which took place off the racecourse; their eyes were diverted away from the horses and onto what Brummell proclaimed to be, the elegant ‘waisted black coats, white cravats with pantaloons’, as well as the lavish dresses and extravagant hats of the female observers. Over the course of Ascot’s 307 year history, individuals have attended the event in their utmost finery, yet in 2012 it was thought that standards were beginning to slip. This decline in standards of attire, prompted organisers to introduce style guides for those who had been granted access to the Queen Anne and Royal Enclosure. This year, the Royal Ascot Style Guide not only details what should be worn within the Royal and Queen Anne Enclosures but for the first time, introduces 16 | Royal Edition 2018
a dress code for the new, Village Enclosure and also suggests outfit ideas for the Windsor Enclosure. As Chief Commercial Officer of Ascot Racecourse, Juliet Slot has commented, “The introduction of style suggestions for the Village and Windsor Enclosures responds to the ever-growing demand from our customers for fashion-forward looks that work for each of the four Enclosures, ensuring every racegoer enjoys this special occasion with style.” Royal Ascot takes place from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd June this year, seeing the seventh annual launch of a style guide for the event, and will be doing so in association with the luxury British cruise line brand, Cunard. Inspired by the designs of clothing brands such as Zimmerman, Roksanda Ilincic, Emilia Wickstead and Mother of Pearl, as well as the creative work of Damian Foxe, this year's style guides are sure to feature outfits that will set the fashion trends for summer. Whilst those high end luxury brands have taken prominence in previous style guides, it seems this year, Royal Ascot have also chosen to feature key looks from high street brands such as Karen Millen, Coast, Topshop and River Island. To give you some inspiration, and ensure your outfit choice will not be frowned upon as you enter the enclosures, we have outlined some basic dress codes that should be adhered to, as well as some stylish and highly elegant outfit combinations, as is suggested in the 2018 Ascot Style Guide
Royal Enclosure
T
he style guide for those with access to the Royal Enclosure, stipulates that one should wear ‘formal daywear.’ This equates to skirts and dresses that fall no shorter than just above the knee, whilst the straps on ladies tops are to be one inch or longer. A hat, or headpiece with a solid base of at least 4 inches is of course, a must! Gentlemen, on the other hand, are required to wear either a black or grey morning dress, with a complimentary top hat. It is significant to note that the grey three piece suit did not in fact, gain popularity until the 1920s when against tradition, the future icon for British tailoring brand, Turnbull & Asser, Edward VIII attended the event wearing one. Today, entry into the Royal Enclosure is only permitted by invitation, although non-members in possession of a hospitality guest day badge can access the enclosure, and one of its fine dining restaurants.
The Queen Anne, Village Enclosure & Windsor
A
lthough the fashions and styles of Ascot have evolved across the centuries to reflect current trends, it cannot be denied that a dress etiquette for the event enforced over 150 years ago, still has much of an impetus to this day. This is particularly the case for those with access to the Royal Enclosure. For instance, gentlemen must still wear a black, or grey top hat, whilst women are expected to wear a headpiece of some description. Following tradition is therefore, still very much a protocol that those attending this historic event should adhere to.

Since 1913, the RHS Chelsea Flower show has taken place within the grounds of the Royal Chelsea Hospital in Chelsea, London- not even the first two years of the First World War were able to prevent its occurrence. This year, the show will take place from Tuesday 22nd May- Sunday 26th May, and is sure to live up to the high standards of previous years. As has been the case for the past eight years, M & G Investments will proudly be the title sponsor for the show which is said to confront, and highlight how gardening can address, some of the most pressing environmental and societal issues facing society today. In the words of the Director General of the RHS, Sue Biggs, the underlying theme of this year's show is to highlight the undeniable 'power of plants and the huge impact green spaces can have on our lives.' I think this year, it is clear to see the sheer development of the flower show since the early 19th Century; from merely being one's judgement of the best tulips, carnations, pinks or polyanthus' in the town halls and public houses across Britain, to something which sees the
creation of gardens that not only exhibit an attractive arrangement of plants, but in fact carry with them important messages that are in need of reflection. The garden, a space which, on those sunnier days provides a light relief from the mundane, or chaotic nature of daily life, is the perfect setting to contemplate your own thoughts on those social, moral and environmental matters. This year, the Royal Chelsea Flower Show seeks to illuminate just that, and even, how growing plants can contribute to addressing some of these issues. Here are some of the display gardens that will be at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and each serve to highlight the challenges prevalent in today's society.

The Pearlfisher Show Garden As The Guardian has recently proclaimed it seems for the UK, 'the hills are alive with the sound of plastic.' The vast amount of plastic waste we produce and the devastating effects it has on our oceans, has become ever more apparent over the last few months, so much so that many restaurants no longer serve beverages with plastic straws. It was even recently revealed that Wimbledon will be putting a ban on plastic straws for this year's championships. Designed by John Warland and the Pearlfisher team, The Pearlfisher Show Garden raises further awareness of the irreversible effects of plastic on our ecosystems and is a plea to businesses to implement the use of sustainable packaging for their products. In order to celebrate the natural beauty of an untouched ecosystem, this garden design uses cacti, Tillandsia, aquatic tanks, coral and fish that surround the threedimensional diver.
Laced with Hope Designed by Laura Anstiss, Laced with Hope is a garden design that raises awareness for the cancer charity, Supershoes. Supershoes assists both children with cancer and their affected families through an incredibly testing time, and uniquely uses the art on shoes to give the children an empowered sense of self. The use of the artwork in this garden design mirrors just that. The vibrant and bold colours used in the creation of this garden are there to reflect one's desire to feel brighter in this stressful time. The bench in the centre of the design symbolises the presence of the familiar in an unfamiliar situation. A bench is after all, perceived as a communal object where we converse and receive support from friends and family. It provides a place for reflection, which in turn allows you to take the necessary steps to move forward.
The Cherub HIV Garden: A life without walls
This garden design titled 'A Life
Without Walls' has been created by Naomi Ferret-Cohen, and acts as a metaphor of a young person's journey living with HIV which as we know, can still carry with it a stigma in society. The circular white pod positioned at the top of the garden represents a clinic and acts as a shield from the prejudice that is often inflicted on those with the disease. The path that leaves the pod and takes you out onto an open space surrounded by informal and warm planting, represents those liberating steps HIV sufferers can take to a life with more freedom, after having left the clinic. The bench at the very end of the pathway symbolises a nonprejudicial society. Once you have perused inspiring show gardens such as these, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show offers ample hospitality to indulge in some utterly delectable food throughout the day and evening. Jardin Blanc with Raymond Blanc, will be making another much desired appearance 36 | Royal Edition 2018
this year and as Raymond himself proclaims, provides 'a very special experience.' Whether you choose Le Lily, La Primrose, or La Tulip packages, this beautiful private garden with an outdoor bar and garden-themed dining rooms is the perfect place to relax and enjoy fresh produce. Each package can allow you to indulge in a simply scrumptious breakfast, a fourcourse lunch or as expected, a quintessentially British afternoon tea.
RHS Chatsworth Flower Show Partnered with Wedgwood, the Royal Horticultural Society will, in its usual fashion, be hosting another blooming spectacle in the form of the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show between 6th-10th June 2018. Although, perhaps not as renowned as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Chatsworth show is equally as informative and aesthetically pleasing as the former. In a similar vein to the Chelsea Flower Show, there will be talks, workshops, demonstrations and show garden exhibitions. The notion of a garden as a haven where one can escape, is something which will be explored at the event, as is reinforced by the show gardens that will be on display. Here’s a sneak peak of what will be exhibited on the day‌
The John Deere Garden: 100 years of Tractors
The Great Outdoors
Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax have completely encapsulated the idea of the technological advancements in agriculture with this garden design. It serves to highlight the way in which the tractor should be perceived as a completely revolutionary piece of equipment and as such, celebrates the centenary of the tractor’s presence in the rural landscape. The wild flowers and flowering grasses utilised here serve to have a meadow-like effect and the circular sculpture of 100 golden tractors serves as the design’s centrepiece.
Designed by Phil Hirst, the ‘Great Outdoors’ Garden has been created with those who are fond of the outdoors in mind. The plants and landscaping of the design have been utilised in this show garden with the intention of mirroring the natural beauty of woodland and moorland. A sense of tranquillity which is evoked by this display, serves to reinforce the way in which the outdoors can offer a space for relaxation.

If the display gardens have left you feeling inspired during the event, and no doubt they will, you’ll be wanting to create your very own show gardens at home. Through talks at the event’s Garden and Potting Bench theatres, with individuals such as Martin Fish and Darren Rudge making appearances, you are sure to be left with a wealth of knowledge that will only grow (excuse the pun!) Both of these shows will no doubt create a buzz for flowers, and we’re not just talking about the bees! (image credit:RHS)

resident monarchs of Kensington Palace have adapted the building
Historic Royal Palaces
A
s the 2015 work of Cele C. Otnes and Pauline Maclaran have highlighted, ‘The significance of visiting sites that have honoured, hosted and housed the Royal family is highlighted by the fact that half of ‘The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Royal Britain’ contains descriptions of over 120 castles, palaces and stately homes. They are focal points in the Royal narrative.’ This is further supported by the Historic Royal Palace’s 20162017 annual review, in which it was revealed that a total of 4,427,000 visits to the Royal Palaces in this independent charity’s care, were recorded. The desire from the public to see for themselves the interiors of what were once, occupied royal residences and the royal artefacts that would otherwise, become buried in the archive is therefore, indisputable. We will be exploring two out of the six remarkable royal palaces that the organisation, Historic Royal Palaces preserve for public viewing. There will be an exploration into the history of these great British heritage sites and the monarchy’s that graced their corridors, both with the intention to transform historical narrative into a vivid reality.
Kensington Palace
T
he transition of Kensington palace from a two-storey building into a royal residence was perhaps, most notably instigated by the Protestant monarchs, William III and Mary II whose rule began in 1689. With the assistance of the creativity and architectural design work of Sir Christopher Wren, the house was furnished with the lavish commodities that made it fit for a King or Queen. There was built for instance, a chapel, accommodation for courtiers, kitchens, stables, barracks and grand rooms which proved a very apt space to hold audiences and ceremonies of state. It is perhaps no surprise then, that Kensington Palace is today, the home of the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection. The stunning attire to be marvelled at here, can be traced back to the 1800s. The 42 | Royal Edition 2018
to suit their own individual needs and this was certainly the case for Queen Anne, who between 17041705 spent £26,000 on improving the gardens at the palace, and this included the construction of an orangery. To this day, the orangery remains a focal point and visitors can enjoy a quintessentially British lunch, breakfast or, afternoon tea. If your fascination with the Royals doesn’t date quite as far back as the 17th Century, there are exhibitions at the palace today, that do in fact celebrate far more modern members of the royal family, including the 'people's princess', Diana Spencer. There is for instance, an exhibition dedicated to the Princess of Wales' fashion choices in which you can see the blue tartan Emanuel suit that was worn on a Royal visit to Venice in the 1980s, as well as the pink Bellville Sassoon
Kew Palace
K
ew Palace is another British Royal Palace in Kew Gardens on the banks of the Thames, near Richmond. It was the summer home of King George III, and is perhaps one of the lesser known Royal Palaces in the trust of the Historic Royal Palaces organisation. This royal residence was built in 1631 for Samuel Fortrey, a Flemish merchant and a decade later it was leased by Queen Caroline, and then purchased by George III. Situated within the grounds of Kew gardens, Kew Palace was very much a place for George III and his wife, Queen Charlotte to escape to during the summer months, along with his fifteen children. Perhaps not the best way to cure his famous episodes of madness! Following Queen Charlotte’s demise in 1818, the palace was then acquired by Kew in 1898 and became open to the public. Visitors of Kew Palace are today, able to marvel at the Royal Kitchens and the Ice House. The Royal Kitchens which are positioned next to the palace give you an insight into the day to day lives of the Georgian servants and the cuisine of the time. The 18th Century Ice House can also be seen when visiting the palace, which would have once stored the foods consumed by King George III.
For summer 2018, Historic Royal Palaces have partnered with the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in the completion of a conservation project of the Great Pagoda, to return it to its 18th Century state. The Great Pagoda was originally designed by the British architect Sir William Chambers and his inspiration was drawn from the buildings in China, as well as the intricate designs of the Porcelain Pagoda at Nanjing. Whilst the Pagoda at Nanjing was intended to provide a window for Britons to gaze at Chinese Culture, The Great Pagoda at Kew is today a monument where one gain attain an insight into the Royal way of living.

The popularity of visiting these sites, serves to reiterate the desire of the public to feel as though they have a connection to the Royals. They make them appear less distant figures, and far more relatable, as we attain an insight into their everyday lives. Just as the televised coronation of Queen Elizabeth II opened the public’s eyes to the world of the Royal way of living, in visiting these Historic Royal Palaces, we enter a realm that would otherwise be out of sight.

A very Royal weekend with Iconic Luxury Hotels
A
s expected there was somewhat of a buzz around the 19th May, and we were all ramming our brains to think of the most fitting way to celebrate the big day (and that was just the FA Cup!) All joking aside, the marriage of Prince Harry and Ms Markle, saw many of us get out those Union Jack flags, tiaras and of course, some bubbly! The Iconic Luxury Hotel group hosted a vast array of royal themed events over the course of the royal wedding weekend, at three of their spectacular hotels. The Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa, the Cliveden House Hotel and 11 Cadogan Gardens Hotel, each with a reputation for outstanding customer service and luxurious accommodation, all provided the perfect setting to toast to the
Cliveden House Hotel, Berkshire There is perhaps not a more quintessentially British event than a garden party, with ample teapots, cake and bunting all in sight. Hosting a garden party within the grounds of Buckingham palace has even for the Queen, become a yearly event within the stunning grounds of Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. There are some pretty impressive statistics associated with the event, including the consumption of 27,000 cups of tea and 20,000 slices of cake! 46 | Royal Edition 2018
The five-star hotel, Cliveden House an Italianate stately home situated within 376 acres of National Trust grounds, held its very own garden party, just in case your royal wedding invitation has been lost in the post! Only 45 minutes west of London and a mere 20 minutes from London Heathrow Airport, the hotel has 47 luxurious rooms and the gorgeous view of the River Thames can be admired from the hotel’s summerhouse. It is quite simply, a picturesque setting.
The Cliveden House hotel, has over 1,000 years of royal history welcoming numerous members of the British monarchy that dates all the way back to George I. Both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth have visited the hotel on several occasions to indulge in a spot of afternoon tea. Only just a few minutes’ drive away from St George’s Chapel where Prince Harry and Ms Markle were wed, it provided an apt setting for the garden party on 19th May. Whilst the cheers of the crowds could be
heard in the distance, the hotel greeted its guests with a glass of Summer Cup at 11.30 and then took them Churchill Room to see the big day unfold. Upon Prince Harry’s and Meghan’s marriage, attendees enjoyed two complimentary glasses of Prosecco, and a two-course barbecue lunch, all whilst listening to some live Jazz music. The Cliveden House hotel also offered a two-night ‘Regal Weekend’ away stay on the 18th and 19th May. The ‘Regal Weekend’ invited guests to enjoy a champagne

afternoon tea on arrival, prior to being taken to one of the luxurious Junior Suites. Guests enjoyed some Royal cocktails and a sevencourse banquet at The Andre Garrett Restaurant, as well as a three-course dinner in The Astor Grill. When the big day arrived, you could watch events unfold from your room or watch on a big screen in the Churchill room. For that icing on top of the royal wedding cake, guests also received a Champagne River Cruise on board the Cliveden’s vintage launch, the Suzy Ann.

The Chewton Glen is again, a five-star hotel, but situated in the New Forest National Park, and in close proximity to the coast. There are 72 lavish bedrooms, 14 tree-house suits and even a nine-hole golf course. With Chewton Glen Hotel, a two-night luxurious stay in one of their stunning Junior Suites was on the course over the Royal wedding weekend. Upon arrival on 18th May, guests indulged in a champagne afternoon tea for two, as well as a three-course dinner with a menu that was been inspired by the
culinary expertise of James Martin. When the big day arrived on 19th May, Chewton Glen gave its guests with the opportunity to watch every bit of the wedding’s action on a big screen in the Morning Room or Lake suite; where they indulged in a royal wedding themed menu, whilst sipping on some very moreish Royal Cocktails. Following the royal marriage, guests could enjoy a full pamper treatment in the award-winning spa at the hotel; a manicure and pedicure for her, and a massage for him. Similar to Cliveden House Hotel, Chewton Glen Hotel offered some more of that Royal treatment in the form of a ‘Natura Bissé Luxury

11 Cadogan Gardens Hotel, Chelsea
11 Cadogan Gardens, also referred to as the ‘best kept secret in Chelsea’, hosted a Regal Afternoon Tea on 19th May between the hours of 2pm-5pm. Having watched the royal marriage at 12pm, this champagne afternoon tea was a fabulous way to toast to the happy couple.

The tea, which could be enjoyed either in the lounge by the fire, or, on the hotel’s garden terrace, included a Pimms on arrival, half a bottle of bubbly per person, finger sandwiches, scones and pastries. There was quite frankly, no better way to celebrate the big day!

Transforming the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Tregunter Road: A case study
O
riginally designed by George Godwin and built during the early 1860s as part of the master plan for what is now known as The Boltons Conservation Area, 28 Tregunter Road has been completely rebuilt over the last three years to create an elegant 8,000 sq ft family home by super-prime constrution company London Projects. Conceived, designed and fully furnished by celebrated architect and interior designer Rabih Hage, the house has been built to exacting standards offering generous proportions, outstanding amenities and unparalleled family and entertaining space on one of the most desirable streets in Chelsea.
The Construction Challanges Faced:
1
There is a protected arch directly to the rear of the property at the entrance to Redcliff Mews. It was critical that this was considered from both a construction and also logistical view point. It was not possible to block access to the mews, which was tricky as the road is very narrow. This created challenges with deliveries, and was especially difficult when installing the car stacker and double storey car lift. Give that the property is at an end of terrace location, with the protected arch to the rear, lack of garage space or available mews house – management of the delivery, storage and excavation of materials was incredibly challenging on this project. It required seamless project management, programme coordination and collaboration throughout.

One of the many unique and striking design features was a full size, mirrored sliding wall installed in the basement pool area, revealing a hidden bar. This item alone was over 400 kilos in weight, and required a specialist bespoke hanging system to be developed and constructed on site, that would not only take the weight but also allow the sliding wall to still be operable (see image overleaf)
"28 Tregunter Road was a large and challenging project split over seven floors, including a double level basement excavation with limited access for materials. It was vital our strong project management and surveying team worked closely with our site specialists in a proven delivery structure. That set up, combined with our in-house Mechanical and Electrical departments, allowed the more complicated elements of the project such as the pool and car stacker to be delivered seamlessly without affecting the main fit out works We worked closely with the client team to ensure the project was value engineered to meet the clients budget and programme, yet achieve the levels of quality expected in the super prime market. We are proud of the end result and the strong relationships we have built with the professional team." -Nick Stuttard and Steve Howat beyond-bespoke.com | 55

obin Philpott joined Farlows in 2015 as Group Managing Director with a brief to expand on all that is good in the Farlows brand – its history and pedigree, its people and their expertise, its product ranges and its loyal customer base. With the experience of 25 years in premium and luxury retail and being a lifelong fisherman and country sports enthusiast Robin seized the challenge with both hands and is now overseeing an exciting transformation in one of Britain’s leading and best loved sporting purveyors. For brand’s who have supplied goods or services to the Households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales for at least 5 years may receive a Royal Warrant of Appointment as a mark of recognition. As Royal Warrant holders since 1982, I asked Robin to tell me what this has meant for Farlows history and heritage? Farlows has a rich history, dating back to our establishment by Charles and John King Farlow back in the Victorian era, and for over 175 years we have provided the finest equipment, clothing and advice to country sports enthusiasts
across the world. Our long and distinguished history gives us an unrivalled depth of knowledge and breadth of experience and it lends authority, which is why we are still trusted to equip and prepare people for the field. The award of a Royal Warrant by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1982 was a mark of recognition for Farlows’ supply of fishing tackle and waterproof clothing to the Royal Household and it has recently been renewed in recognition of our ongoing trading relationship. The grant of a Royal Warrant is an honour, it reflects Farlows’ philosophy and, we hope, recognises our commitment to the ethical sourcing of the finest British materials and craftsmen to create practical and stylish products for the modern country market.
How does Farlows work to champion British craftsmanship, and how important is it that we, as a nation, continue to develop these skills? We work very closely with some of the finest artisan British producers, including one of the best tweed beyond-bespoke.com | 57
mills in the country in Hawick, Scotland, which produces the exclusive Farlows’ tweeds. The silks for our ties and pocket squares are made in one of the oldest silk mills in the world in Suffolk and our stick-maker, who creates stunning shooting and walking sticks with carved animal and bird heads, works out of a shed in Northern Ireland; it is a unique, small scale British business. More recently we have engaged with a leather workshop in the Midlands where they hand craft a range of small leather pieces, such as wallets, for us. This is a small business working out of a converted garage, employing apprentices to ensure that the craft is nurtured and has a future and we are delighted to encourage that. We have also engaged with noted stained glass maker, Sophie D'Souza. Although Sophie primarily creates ecclesiastical stained glass and undertakes church commissions, Farlows recognised her unique talent and engaged with her to produce a range of stained glass panels depicting some of our iconic sporting species, such as the Atlantic salmon, brown trout, hare, pheasant and royal stag. Additionally, she created the Charles Farlow Trophy for us which
is awarded annually to the captor of the largest salmon caught on the fly, and safely returned, to an English or Welsh river. British craftsmanship gives our product ranges a very distinctive edge, while not compromising on quality, and that’s refreshing in a world of massconsumerism. Farlows will always champion that.
Farlows is renowned for providing the best sporting equipment in the country and the near-encyclopaedic knowledge and expertise of your staff members is famed – why is this so important to your clients?
When customers leave our store, they take away much more than the finest equipment and clothing, they also take with them some of our team’s knowledge, experience and wisdom. It is something that can’t be measured or have a price placed on it but it is something our clients value - it is the true essence of Farlows, it is trust. Our team has expertise in game fishing, both at home and abroad, and can advise anglers on the correct tackle and techniques for any destination in the world. Indeed, the chances are that one of the team will have fished the same beat, with the same ghillie, and can tie the killer fly the angler needs too! It’s the

same with our clothing collection, the team has expertise in the field in every extreme of weather. They can advise on correct layering for salmon fishing in the Arctic, staying cool and protected from the sun on the Mexican flats and staying warm, dry and comfortable on a wet winter’s day on a grouse moor.
With such a rich history, how will the Farlows brand evolve as it moves into the future? We are driven by a pursuit of excellence in the products we sell and the service we provide, coupled with a relentless desire to push boundaries and to innovate, we are always seeking to improve that, both in terms of the creation of our products and the training of our team, and that will continue to drive Farlows into the future. We plan to steadily develop the Farlows range of products and, in addition to the evolution of our acclaimed fieldwear and country clothing collections, we are beginning to explore some exquisite and technically advanced pieces for the angling market, including our own range of rods, made by hand in England. Elegantly styled in the British fly fishing
tradition by highly experienced craftsmen, these will be designed to afford improved casting efficiency, more delicate presentation and an aesthetic of handling that will make them the ultimate implement for fly fishing in the traditional realm of streams and rivers.
What does Britishness mean to you? It depends how you define ‘Britishness’! I’m sure how we define it in today’s multi-cultural Britain is very different indeed to how Charles Farlow would have defined it back in 1840. Britishness is many things to many people. It’s afternoon tea with scones and jam, cricket on the village green, a fat trout rising to a dry fly on an beyond-bespoke.com beyond-bespoke.com || 59 59
English chalkstream, being in the butts on a Scottish grouse moor, waiting for dusk beside a Welsh sea trout river. It’s pleasingly eccentric but at the same time it’s ordered and surprisingly efficient. It has its roots in tradition and experience but it is innovative and progressive, seeking to be better – these are all elements of Britishness that are woven into the character of Farlows and which I hope are evident in our people and in our products.

Revel in Royal Fever with Red Carnation Hotels
W
e all caught a spot of the Royal fever that flared up in the last few days ahead of Ms Markle's and Prince Harry's wedding this month. Our only cure was to revel in it; lift that glass of champagne, indulge in those homemade jam pennies and enjoy an experience, quite simply, fit for a King or Queen. Fortunately, The Rubens at the Palace and The Milestone Hotel & Residences, both in close proximity to Royal palaces, provided the perfect setting to do just that! See for yourself what these two spectacular London hotel's have to offer...
The Rubens at the Palace The Rubens at the Palace is situated directly opposite the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace and has ample Royal themed experiences to be enjoyed by guests; from Royal Rooms, to fine dining experiences. This luxury 4-star hotel has gained a reputation for being able to maintain the splendour of architecture and interior designs of past decades, alongside the presence of those much desired modern comforts. The hotel, has in fact, recently undergone a full refurbishment which included all the bedrooms, restaurants and bars.

The Rubens at the Palace hosted a Royal Afternoon Tea with Champagne in The Palace Lounge on the day of the Royal Wedding, where some of the Queen's and Prince Phillip's favourite beverages were enjoyed, including Gin and Dubonnet and the English bitter, Boddingtons.
T
he hotel has 18 lavish Royal Rooms for those who simply can't get enough of the British monarchy. Each of the room's designs are intended to mirror a particular style of one of the Royals, whilst a portrait of the individual is proudly displayed within it. This includes, Queen Elizabeth II, Princes Phillip and Charles, Princess Diana and even, Princes William and Harry. The Royal double rooms at
this hotel are priced from £300 per room, per night.  In addition to this, you can taste produce from the Queen's butcher at The English Grill; a fine dining brasserie-style restaurant in the hotel. All of the dishes available to devour in the restaurant are created with produce sourced both locally, and from high quality suppliers, including meats from Aubrey Allen who does in fact hold a Royal

Warrant. As such, guests can be expected to enjoy both the high standards of food, and service that are fit for the Queen. Polished silver and tail coated waiters will also be on the cards.
The Milestone Hotel & Residences
T
he Milestone Hotel & Residences, part of the Leading Hotels of the World, will also be revelling in royal fever. The Milestone hotel is located directly opposite Kensington Palace, and many of the rooms overlook the palace gardens. The afternoon tea at The Milestone Hotel & Residences caters for those aspiring little Princes and Princesses who quite rightly, also deserve a taste for the Royal way of living. For those children aged 12 and under, the 64 | Royal Edition 2018
hotel gives them the opportunity to decorate their very own cupcakes, which are served alongside some rather scrumptious finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and hot chocolate (okay, so not quite silver service, but I am sure the children won't mind!) The grounds of Kensington Palace can be admired whilst the little ones tuck in.
T
he Milestone Hotel & Residences has a brand new 'Meghan' Grand Master Suite, which has only recently been beautifully re-designed. In the suite, there is an impressive white marble bathroom, artwork by Francois Gangemi and a custom-made Murano chandelier. It’s an entirely lavish affair. Whilst the focus has been on the Royal couple, I am sure that wedding bells will be chiming for many couples this year, and The Milestone Hotel has recently
introduced a brand new Royal Kensington Wedding package, so that your wedding could be equally as lavish and spectacular as Harry and Meghan's. The package includes the option of a civil marriage ceremony in The Oratory, the hotel's private chapel', and other additions such as the hotel's private chauffeur driven Bentley for that essential pre-wedding shopping trip to Kensington or Knightsbridge. If so desired, the bride can also receive a full pampering experience with the hotel's beauty therapist, beyond-bespoke.com | 65
