Welcome Welcome to the latest issue of Chichester Business – the Chamber’s bi-annual publication featuring local business stories alongside all the details of our action-packed events programme for the first half of 2018. As well as looking forward, I want to take the opportunity to note some great events and news from the last six months. In the summer we were delighted to announce the appointment of our new Chief Executive – although rather than one name, I was delighted to be able to announce two as we appointed a job share. As I’m sure you know, the role is shared between Julie Harrison and Sue Garman. Between them, they bring a wealth of experience, local knowledge and passion to the role. We are very lucky to have them and they are focused on continuing to deliver a high-quality Chamber with a focus on supporting and growing our membership. Our business breakfasts in partnership with Chichester College go from strength to strength with many being sold out in advance. Our monthly members meetings have taken us from Fishbourne Roman Palace to Chichester Cathedral, The Prebendal School and The Academy Selsey. Members also had a chance to see ‘Behind the Scenes’ at the fantastic Tangmere Airfield Nurseries – the UK’s largest pepper farm. Looking ahead, our regular breakfasts and monthly members meetings continue alongside some new and exciting events. I am particularly looking forward to the ‘Cocktail Tasting Masterclass’ being held at the Chichester Harbour Hotel in April – I might even need to book myself a room…! We are also proud to once again be supporting the Observer and Gazette Business Awards – a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our local business talent and successes. Lastly, a plug for the next in our series of ‘Behind the Scenes’ tours – a chance to visit the studios of Spirit FM and to meet some of the team who run West Sussex’s leading commercial radio station. A number of our members have also asked us to put on more workshops on key business issues and we are responding to this by holding workshops on the upcoming changes around General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). With the changes due to take place in 2018, this is a good opportunity to find out how it will impact your business and what you need to do. We also continue to work closely with the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and host events in partnership with their Growth Hub and business advisors. Lastly, after all the planned networking, training, eating (and cocktail tasting…) I think I might need to book for the Afternoon Tea at the Hilton in association with our friends at Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce.

MARKETING
Customer seduction Want to develop your marketing knowledge and skills? An exclusive marketing event brought to you by the University of Chichester’s’ Business School and in association with Chichester Chamber of Commerce and Coast to Capital Growth Hub
Often when speaking to businesses, marketing comes up as a challenge. People know about it but are not quite sure what they should be doing or why they should be doing it. Some people look at it as a panacea to save their business; others view it as an evil necessity, whilst others hardly give it a second thought. How do you view marketing? There are two great definitions (amongst many) of marketing: “The process by which companies create value for customers and build strong customer relationships in order to capture value from customers in return.” (Kotler and Armstrong) “Marketing is the management process for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.” (Chartered Institute of Marketing). The key words that come from these two definitions are process, value and customers. From this you can start to consider the process you need to capture and exchange value with customers. Often, the process part is the most challenging to a business owner. The process is your marketing strategy. Most people think of their marketing tactics first. Strategy is key to the success of marketing. Do you understand value and

what value your potential customers gain from your product or service? What value (monetary or otherwise) do they place on your product or service and therefore are prepared to pay for it? And do you really know your customers? If you can answer all these questions and relate your marketing back to the marketing definitions you can be sure you have quality marketing that can make a difference to your business.

The voice of Chichester business chichestercci.org.uk DATA PROTECTION
Are you ready for GDPR? On 25 May 2018, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will establish laws across the EU that protect the data privacy rights of EU citizens. As the lead-up to implementation gathers pace, businesses will be bombarded with advice on what they need to do to avoid potential fines for non-compliance. However, I don’t believe panicking people with threats of huge fines is helpful - my advice would be to focus on what's important - your GDPR planning should be specifically tailored to the key areas of risk you face. An advantage of GDPR is to reduce complexity by ensuring that a single set of rules will apply across the EU. But where do you begin when GDPR impacts on all parts of your business and all types of data? Start by looking at what you already have in place as not everything in GDPR is new - you could find that much of your knowledge and processes from the existing data protection laws could be utilised for GDPR. See where the gaps are, assess your risk and focus on what’s important. You’ll need to consider GDPR from several perspectives including legal, technical, security and employment.
Big changes From an HR perspective (which is what floats my boat), the way you collect and process data about employees and job candidates will be changing BIG TIME!
In recruitment, if you use automatic profiling to filter CVs, you’ll need to notify candidates and, if they object, have an alternative method with human intervention instead. Overall, the rules around ‘consent’ will be much tighter and raise questions about how free employees really are to give or withhold consent. And how will you respond to employees (or ex-employees) if they demand their ‘right to be forgotten’? The rules on Subject Access Requests (SARs) will change too, reducing the time you have to respond and cutting out fees. I also believe that a consequence of the abolition of employment tribunal fees could result in an increase in SARs as they are often used to gather information prior to litigation. It’s a simple process but one people aren’t always aware of and that’s when things can go badly wrong!
You’ll need to consider GDPR from several perspectives including legal, technical, security and employment.
My advice is to take a sensible, systematic approach to GDPR across all parts of your business, involve your employees and ensure the new systems become part of the way you do things. CCCI will be holding events in early 2018 to help businesses plan for GDPR. Dianne Lambdin, Director of Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry and The Sussex HR Hub.

MEMBER PROFILE
Jackie Sharp Co Prom In 1984 (having worked as an Account Manager for a sourcing specialist in Weybridge for 8 months) Jackie set up a thriving business, at the age of 21, with a busy roster of clients including some household names, such as Revlon, Texaco, Lancôme, Kellogg’s & Findus. The list continues to grow and it now includes local companies in West Sussex & Hampshire. Jackie felt part of the emerging group of entrepreneurs during the Thatcher era and she discussed this during a programme (hosted by Kirsty Young) on the BBC a few years ago. During the interview she shows Kirsty the bright magenta pink Thai silk suits which were specially made for trade shows where Co Prom exhibited, designed to stand out from the crowd. Nowadays Jackie can be seen in a magenta shirt printed with a slogan on the back telling fellow networkers who she is and what she does and inviting them to tap her on the shoulder (see below). This innovative approach shows Jackie’s open and friendly personality and her confidence in her business.“Don’t just take our word for it.” says Jackie, “See what our clients have to say”. She encourages all clients to give testimonials via an independent platform called Free Index. One client simply emails his budget and asks her to suggest a selection of items she thinks will be suitable for his campaign. The repeat business for the last 4 years is testament in itself. “We know we are not the cheapest but we take the hassle out of the whole task and for some clients it is worth paying a few more pennies to get exemplary customer care, leaving them more time to do what they know best” says Jackie. The voice of Chichester business chichestercci.org.uk BUSINESS SUPPORT
Improving city dwell-times Research from Coastal West Sussex indicates that the City of Chichester is the main draw to the region for 70% of its visitors, yet somehow the City has seen a 25% drop in footfall since 2008. This is not all down to the City’s individual performance however; nationally, all High Streets have suffered a 20% drop due to the impact of online shopping and changes in consumer habits. Some of the further drop might be due to the closure of the Chichester Festivities in 2012, since when we have lost our summer visitor peak, although 1 million people come through our doors in the month before Christmas. Faced with this decline, the BID Board, made up of volunteers from local businesses who pay the levy, has asked the new BID team to focus not so much on counting footfall as in measuring each visitor’s dwell-time, i.e. can we get them to stay a little bit longer? High Street footfall is measured nationally by Springboard, a company which compares our performance against other cities. The Institute of Place Management has analysed this Springboard data going back many years, to see if there are any patterns to footfall that emerge. They have come up with just four city profiles: community, shopping, holiday and cultural. Our flat summers with just a Christmas peak show
that we are operating mostly as a community city these days, in spite of Chichester’s obvious capacity to operate as all four of these model places. The Board accepts that footfall has fallen nationally but that more could be done to benefit from the visitors we do have. Directors have therefore asked if the BID team could focus on re-establishing the City’s attraction to those visitors also seeking cultural, shopping and holiday reasons to stay that little bit longer. Most of this effort is going to be focussed on the B2C businesses (business to consumer, client or customer) who make up the majority of our members. A quick straw poll among our more strictly business-to-business members has received their support for these efforts, on the basis that a thriving City with such a rich mix of customer-facing profiles is a good place to work, invest and do business. These more joined-up requirements are making it a lot easier for the team to manage its workload, as each request for project support is now subjected to two simple questions: will it improve dwell-times and does it promote one of our four City profiles? www.chichesterbid.co.uk
Supporting economic growth Coast to Capital LEP has now been delivering the Enterprise Adviser Network for almost 2 years in the Chichester and Arun area. Our role is to bridge the gap between education and the world of work. We now work with six mainstream schools, Chichester College and the Alternative Provision Centres and are in the process of signing up a further three mainstream schools before Christmas. The backbone of our service is our Enterprise Advisers. These are local senior business people who build a relationship with the Headteachers and senior teams in these schools and colleges. They bring their knowledge of their industry, their experience of the world of work and their business networks and work with the senior teams to help shape a robust careers and enterprise strategy. In addition to these Enterprise Advisers we are also building a database of Industry Champions. These can be anyone from the world of work who wants to share their experiences and their career paths with the school and college students through talks, careers fairs, projects, workplace visits, etc.
Ensuring that every young person has at least four meaningful encounters with the world of work reduces their chance of becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) by 86% so they remain productive members of the workforce. So, in summary, the Enterprise Adviser Network, is good for young people, good for employers and good for the economic stability and growth of Chichester and Arun. Disruptive technology
Does it mean financial change for the better? The latest developments in artificial intelligence and robotics might seem a world away. However, in the current wave of ‘disruptive technology’, these developments could soon have a big impact on the finances of each and every one of us. Technology is developing at a remarkable pace, altering how we work and live. In the wake of this, new industries appear while old ones slip away, start-up businesses replace traditional names, and our expectations as consumers are reset. Looking at automation and the job market, change is afoot, with ‘intelligent’ technology being used to support (and in some cases replace) human workers across multiple sectors and functions. As we adapt our lifestyles to match these changes in technology, we will inevitably begin to see a transformation in the landscape of our own local businesses.
impact on the prices you pay. But disruptive technology could also have an affect on your longer-term finances, in relation to your investments. As new technologies create new industries, and disturb the status quo in more traditional sectors, so new opportunities for investment arise. With so many factors at play, this is far from a binary debate. But one thing is for certain – change is constant. So taking time to understand how to maximise the financial opportunities it creates is a wise investment for anyone. But what does all of this have to do with your personal finances? How will technological breakthroughs connect directly to the money in your bank account? The most obvious connection should appear in terms of prices. Increased efficiency and availability of products and services – thanks to new technologies – could have a positive
The value of investments may fall as well as rise and you might get back less than you originally invested.
