Welcome

IN THIS ISSUE... Chichester Business January–June 2017

04–09 Events programme: January–June 2017

Welcome to the third edition of Chichester Business – a bi-annual publication featuring business news and Chamber events in Chichester and the surrounding area.

11 Have Your Say – The CCCI Survey The results

I was delighted to take over as Chair of Chichester Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Summer. It is an honour to be part of such a successful and dynamic business organisation. I am passionate about our work to support the economic and social conditions of the local area along with providing networking opportunities and advice to businesses. I know that issues around travel and transport continue to be a major frustration for local businesses and to that end, this issue includes updates on the work we have done lobbying for improvements on the A27 and around Southern Rail. In order to support existing businesses and to encourage growth, we must find ways to address travel delays and a lack of reliability – we know that this is hurting our bottom line and turning people away from Chichester.

As the Chamber, we will continue to champion the issues that matter to our members and this issue includes an update on our public affairs agenda and member survey. We exist to be the voice of business and you have my commitment that we will continue to be vocal and opinionated and ‘take on’ the issues that matter to you. We have strong relations with the District and County Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership and are frequently consulted on our members’ views on issues ranging from regeneration, skills, planning and business development. The Chamber continues to be as busy as ever with an action packed events programme that caters for almost every need and taste – whether it is the ‘Behind the Scenes’ visits, our free monthly members meetings, workshops or the new Business Breakfasts which I am delighted to be cohosting at Chichester College. I look forward to seeing you at one of our events and to working in partnership with the Board and all of our members to continue to grow the Chamber.

THE CCCI SURVEY

Of those 85% we asked them to tell us the advantages of locating in Chichester. “An excellent cultural offer, pleasant working environment and access to the countryside and coast.” “An active local business community. A note from CCCI Vice-Chair Shelagh Legrave The Chamber has lobbied government on your behalf concerning the Southern Rail issue. It is clear that all of us are affected by their inability to run services on time and the continuing series of strikes. The reply from Paul Maynard MP, minister in the Department for Transport is on the CCCI website. It is clear that Government are not prepared to intervene in the industrial dispute which is very disappointing. I was also interviewed by South Today and Meridian concerning the A27 consultation. We stressed the need for action to upgrade the A27 around Chichester but without any commitment on which option, if any, would be more appropriate. From a poll carried out by the Chamber office, a majority were in favour of Option 2 but a significant number were also keen to pursue options 1 or 3 or indeed a Northern option which was not part of the consultation. CCCI will continue to lobby local and national government for a solution to the transport issues affecting our city.

MEMBER PROFILE

Dawn Shrives, Le Salon du Chocolat and children enabling them to make their own chocolates using professional methods and equipment, but in a relaxing environment of a studio rather than a factory. Over the next seven years the business grew and they relocated to Horton’s Yard, Chichester where they are currently.

Dawn Shrives is Proprietor of Le Salon Du Chocolat, a bespoke chocolate studio based in Chichester. Growing up in Bracklesham and then moving into Chichester with her family to enable their children to attend secondary schools, she never imagined for one moment that there was a position of a chocolatier, let alone becoming the owner of her own chocolate business. After secretarial and accountancy rolls, she answered an advertisement in the local paper simply saying ‘Do You Like Chocolate’! Believing she was applying her bookkeeping skills, she actually ended up running a chocolate production team before moving on to help another new chocolate business set

up. But after constantly being asked “how do you make chocolate?”, “what’s it like to work in a chocolate factory?” and “can we have a go?” she realised that there was no access to these commercial sites for the public due to health and safety reasons. So, in 2004, she found a small studio at Stansted Park, furnished it with the same moulds, machines and equipment used commercially and hence Le Salon Du Chocolat was born.

Relaxing environment The whole concept, including the name (“I thought ‘Le Salon Du Chocolat’ sounded nicer than ‘The Chocolate Room’” says Dawn), was about providing luxury, indulgent ‘experiences’ to adults

Dawn does manufacture small batches of chocolate to sell at local food fairs and of course for corporate branded chocolate, but primarily her business is about the hands on chocolate workshops, parties and experiences that are hosted at the studio. She loves to share her knowledge and experience of working with chocolate with anyone who is interested to have a go. Her passion, though, is educating people to understand what chocolate really is – or should be! Today she is a registered speaker with not only both Hampshire and Sussex WI’s but hosts talks for U3a and many other groups, schools linking into their curriculum with the subject of chocolate and also sharing the story of the history of chocolate and how it is make from Cocoa Bean To Chocolate Bar. “Although I love working with and making chocolate, I love the subject of chocolate the most” she says. Chichester College director of sales and marketing, Andrew Jenkins said: “The forthcoming changes to apprenticeships mark a real shift to the way training will be delivered and assessed. “Employers will have much greater say in the training their apprentices receive and how it is delivered, reflecting that every company is unique and has its own set of business needs and skills requirements. “Apprenticeships won’t be one size fits all – they can be tailored to the business to ensure the employer and the apprentice are getting the maximum benefit from the training. “Many of the apprenticeship programmes we offer through the college will also have flexible start dates, which means your apprentice can start when you need them instead of waiting until a new academic year.” Apprenticeship course structures – or frameworks – will be overhauled, with new standards and assessment processes introduced. These have been developed teams of experts in individual areas, including a host of industry-leaders whose inputs ensure the standards reflect the skills and knowledge relevant to the sector. While employers will have more control over apprenticeships, they will also face more responsibilities including the possibility of an apprenticeship levy for large companies with payroll bills of more than £3million a year. However, employers, and in particular small businesses, could also receive incentive repayments. This may realise

a higher return for investing in training of apprentices – that means companies may end up better off financially. It is a far reaching and complex programme of changes, but Andrew is confident that Chichester College is in a strong position to support businesses through the transition and to make the most of the new approach. He added: “Chichester College is an Ofsted-rated Outstanding institution with a wealth of experience in apprenticeships. We enable over 2000 apprentice programmes at any one time across a vast range of disciplines and levels. “Our dedicated apprenticeship team are available to provide advice, guidance and support to businesses throughout the transition period on topics from training course, funding availability and long term resource planning. This is supported by our exceptional standard of delivery and success rates across our apprenticeships. “According to the National Rates of Achievement for 2014/15 we are the number one college in Sussex for achievement - and indeed number one in the country for construction apprenticeships – so employers and prospective apprentices can be confident in the quality of service and training that the college offers. “We offer a hugely diverse portfolio of apprenticeships across a wide range of industries – from engineering to agriculture, business to construction and almost everything in between. We are excited about the opportunities presented by these changes to apprenticeships and look forward to working with businesses to realise the great benefits apprentices can bring to an organisation.”

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER AN APPRENTICE? There are lots of benefits to having an apprentice in your workplace. Employing an apprentice (or two) can: · Improve productivity · Fill skills gaps, including specialist skills specific to your industry · Provide a significant return on investment · Motivate staff and reduce staff turnover · Assist with succession planning · Reduce training and recruitment costs

WHAT IS THE APPRENTICESHIP LEVY? From April 2017, an apprenticeship levy will be introduced to all UK employers with an annual payroll of more than £3million. Set by government, this means all employers who fall into this category will be required to pay 0.5% of payroll costs into a levy which can then be used to invest into funding apprenticeships into the business. For more information about the levy, what it is and how it could affect you, please visit www.gov.uk and search ‘apprenticeship levy’ or contact the Chichester College apprenticeship team on 01243 812948.
