Welcome From the Chair, Louise Hopkins I am delighted to welcome you to a new publication from Chichester Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in which you’ll find a host of events open to members and nonmembers, as well as some commentary about issues affecting commerce and industry in the area. This publication also heralds our exciting new identity and our public affairs agenda, which we hope you will feed into. Chichester is a delightful enclave offering far more than its size belies, with impressive art, culture, history and heritage plus global, national and award-winning businesses. Chichester and its surrounds present a naturally desirable place for people to live, providing something for everyone in terms of interests and leisure. With the South Downs on our doorstep offering anything from mountain biking, horse riding, golf and cycling and the fabulous coastline providing wake boarding, sailing and kite surfing, those attracted by what we have to offer need somewhere to live. So Chichester continues to grow, in desire and attraction as well as in mass. Chichester Chamber of Commerce and Industry has merit & weight as the key voice of business in the District, has good relations with District and County organisations and is frequently invited as a consultee for a range of issues including planning, infrastructure and city centre matters, as well as representing national brands and major employers in the area. The core networking organisation for business in the region, we represent sectors including horticulture and agriculture, with some of the largest producers in the UK; tourism which covers marine, land-based activities and internationally renowned destinations such as Goodwood and Fishbourne Roman Palace; a variety of service providers from nationally known Checkatrade and high calibre professional services firms to start-ups and micro businesses in technology and new media – and even manufacturing with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Montezuma’s & Oceanair. As a Chamber of Commerce, we tend to buck the stereotype and are known for being noisy, opinionated – and effective! So we look forward to welcoming you at our events, and hearing and representing your views.

MEMBERS MEET : A MEETING OF MINDS OF THE MEMBERSHIP
When Susan met Helen
Our conversation moved on to the importance of collaboration and accountability and I told Helen about my plans to start pairing TBOM members up, so they have an ‘accountability buddy’ and she really liked the concept. She pointed out that businesses started by more than one person are more likely to succeed and agreed that, for mums who work alone, having someone to regularly check in with them and hold them accountable, was the next best thing.
Critical balance Susan Payton of The Business of Mums Helen and I met for coffee in Chichester, to find out a bit more about each other’s businesses. As someone who only speaks to my accountant once a year, I was keen to find out what Helen offers her clients, beyond the obvious help with those end of year accounts! Well the clue was in her title – Chartered “Management” Accountant. Helen actually has a wealth of experience of working with big businesses and feels her real value is in helping larger organisations, who are not quite ready to employ a full time Finance Director, keep a handle on those all-important numbers, recognise where their core profits are coming from and when shifts in market trends mean they need to adapt or even change course. As well as running her own business, Helen is a mum of three girls, so I was interested to hear how she manages to
Helen Alexander of Millbrook Financial Management balance work and family life. She said that the ‘balance’ has changed over the years, as her girls have grown into teenagers, but she thinks mainly it is about being flexible and realistic about what you can achieve in the time that you have each day. Talking of mums in business, Helen asked me about the ethos behind my website, The Business of Mums, and how it differed from other Mumpreneur focused networking organisations. I explained that TBOM is an online portal, providing practical business information on everything from branding, marketing and networking to juggling business with family life. The site also has an online forum, a noticeboard and, in the New Year, members will be able to access discounts for some of the essential services they need to start and run their business.

We talked about finding that critical balance between time spent working in your business, to provide a great service for your existing clients, and working on your business, marketing yourself and reaching out to new clients. We both agreed that providing great content online was important for raising your profile in your own industry and that writing a regular blog was a good first step towards doing this. And, with our ‘accountability buddy’ hats on, we committed to checking in with each other regularly, to make sure we were blogging and even decided to join forces and write one on ‘Is having a business partner right for you?’ So, if you would be interested in seeing if we’ve managed to do that check out our blogs at: www.millbrookfm.co.uk www.thebusinessofmums.com

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID) UPDATE
Developing trading opportunities Chichester’s businesses wanted to be heard and in 2011 were voted as an independent voice for Chichester’s city centre. Chichester BID are a statutory body of 735 businesses within the BID Levy area – currently within the city centre walls, with the exception of The Hornet, St Pancras and Southgate. 735 businesses (BID Levy payers) all contribute 1% of the rateable value of the premises they occupy, into an annual fund managed by Chichester BID.
BID Renewal
By Charlotte Wickins, BID Manager Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) and Chichester Business Improvement District (BID) share a common aim – to improve business development and trading opportunities for local businesses. Chichester BID works to identify and develop Chichester’s trading opportunities as a collective, with aims to develop a well-organised city with good access and trading facilities, a safe environment and most importantly, to increase footfall and raise Chichester’s profile.
Small, local family run business providing standard, novel & bespoke promotional products.
The BID are in their fourth year and next October 2017 will go through a BID Renewal process, where all BID Levy payers will be invited to vote for a second term. The BID management team are mostly volunteers and are busy consulting members to identify the key issues for the second term. Without Chichester BID, there would not be Christmas Lights and festivities, or a range of other sponsored annual events. The ChiBAC radio and security scheme would not exist; the current environmental city improvement and business signage projects would halt. Most importantly, the collective articulate voice for our city centre businesses, now consulted with by local groups and local authorities would disappear. www.chichesterbid.co.uk

The voice of Chichester business www.chichestercci.org.uk RECRUITMENT
The local recruitment market By Brendon Cook, Kiwi Recruitment
With this in mind, our top tips to be aware of when you are thinking of recruiting or growing your team are to:
Based in central Chichester and supporting clients and candidates throughout West Sussex, London and Surrey, we have been best placed to notice changes to the local recruitment market in 2015.
• Use professionals; always ask for a guarantee
We have seen a year where flexibility has been a key attribute for our clients, alongside the preference for recruiting candidates with temporary contracts before perhaps offering more permanent roles. As experts with providing temporary and permanent staff, whether short term and unskilled roles or long term and highly skilled, we have also observed an increase in demand for temporary and highly skilled workers locally too and we have worked hard to ensure we can supply this demand. Our projections for 2016 are that it will be more difficult to find skilled labour in the marketplace and candidates attitudes are changing too. They are searching for employment that will offer more than just a salary, with attractive benefits packages and opportunities for growth a keen objective.
• Make sure you hire the right person to avoid making costly mistakes Our experience with supporting employers with finding candidates in the labour, hospitality, sales and IT sectors is vast. Like our clients, we understand that every individual is different, so we aim to get to know the person, their interests and hobbies as well as their future aspirations, ensuring that candidates we place can offer the most value to an employer. www.kiwirecruitment.co.uk 01243 782763

ASK THE EXPERTS
Top tips for starting a business By Gareth Sear, Business Startup Manager, University of Chichester Business School In the UK there are around 3 million home based businesses. And they all had to start up at some point. In this article I’m going to set out top three tips for starting your own business.
1
Think Customer Segments. Who are you creating value for? If you don’t know your customers how will you know you can create value for them? The more know about your customers and the jobs that they are doing the more you will know what pains they have with these jobs, or what gains they are trying to achieve with through these jobs.
2
Design the Value Proposition. Knowing what pains a customer segment has or what gains they are trying to achieve will directly impact on your value proposition. Your value
proposition is your product or service that you have designed to alleviate the pain your customer is experiencing in the job that they are trying to do, or gives them the gain that they need from the job that they are trying to do.
3
Just do it. Too many people procrastinate about starting a business wondering if it will work or if it won’t. The only real way to find out is to ‘just do it’. Your value proposition design and customer segments are all hypothetical. You need your customers to validate your ideas and tell you that there is a fit between your value proposition and the job that they need to do. voice of Chichester businessworld, InThe a fairy-tale www.chichestercci.org.uk cybercrime wouldn’t exist...
each time a business becomes the victim of cybercrime, its reputation is at stake. As our reliance on IT and the internet has increased, so too has the potential impact of cyber-attacks, ranging from online fraud and phishing emails, through to data theft and dial-through fraud. So how can businesses protect against cyber-threats? Well, much like Shrek’s explanation of Ogres being like onions, really, same principles apply - it’s all about layers. (Layers of security that is!)
Why not increase your online business security with these simple steps… Educate your team Have you got an IT Security policy? Do you train new members of staff on their personal security responsibilities? Are users aware of what is and what isn’t a genuine notification from DHL about that parcel that’s being delivered?
Build up Network Security Ask IT to establish multi-layered boundary defences and enforce firewalls. Use monitoring to regularly audit and automatically alert, but most importantly, regularly test security controls.
Don’t let your data walk out the virtual door! Ask IT to limit the use of USB drives and scan all new devices automatically. Block the use of online personal storage sites such as Dropbox or Google Drive for users that don’t require these services- your sensitive business data can be sent offsite without physically walking through the front door!
Shield your phone systems PBX fraud is on the rise. Hackers dial into phone systems, normally over the weekend, use them to make a high volume of calls premium rate or overseas numbers. Lock down your phone system and restrict the use of simple voicemail passwords such as 1243. Does your telecoms company provide you with fraud blocking or alerting?

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is close to being a reality. Under the GDPR, businesses that believe they have suffered a data breach or cyber-attack will have to report the data breach “without undue delay” the point at which it is discovered. Unlike Shrek, real life doesn’t involve princesses, talking donkeys and the Land of Far Far Away - it’s about time local businesses put measures in place, to tackle the real life threats of cybercrime.

LOCAL PLAN
Preparing a vision for Chichester
By Stephen Oates, Economic Development Manager, Chichester District Council What do we want Chichester to be? The Chichester Local Plan describes Chichester City Centre as the “jewel in the crown” of Chichester District, “with its stunning cathedral, its bustling shopping streets and well renowned higher education, arts and cultural scene”. Like many towns and cities with a strong heritage and cultural base, Chichester has survived the impact of the economic recession better than many but, arguably, the ‘City’ has not then sought out and maximised opportunities to grow and flourish. Each resident, visitor and worker will have their own views on the City and what it offers and there are those who like things just the way they are. Similarly, there are many who feel the City is ‘dated’, lacks vibrancy and ambition, does not fully exploit its heritage and cultural base, does not offer the range of shops and facilities to satisfy their needs, and operates at well below its economic potential. Meanwhile our lifestyles, the way we work, our leisure time, and our shopping habits are changing. Our city is growing with thousands of new homes planned and other nearby towns and cities are working hard to capture new businesses, attract new customers, and exploit the potential for economic growth. DC’s Economic Development Service is therefore leading its ‘Chichester Vision’ project to:
• Develop and articulate a clear, cohesive ‘Vision’ for the City, seeking out new ideas and proposals, and taking account of current and likely future economic, cultural, heritage, lifestyle, technological, social and planning policy factors and influences • Identify the future function of the City Centre • Place the Vision at the heart of future economic and planning policy for the City • Help Chichester to compete strongly against other towns and cities by being: - A popular and forward-thinking location attractive to entrepreneurs, employers, employees and their families - A first-class ‘destination’ for shoppers - A popular and attractive destination for day and staying visitors - One of England’s cultural and heritage ‘centres of excellence’ - An important administrative centre for West Sussex Chamber members will be hearing a lot more about this over the next few months and, as part of the consultation process, we’ll be asking you ‘what do we want Chichester to be?’ Look out for the CCCI Members Survey in early 2016
