Welcome to the latest issue of Chichester Business – the Chamber’s bi-annual publication featuring local business stories alongside all the details of our action-packed events programme. The last six months have seen us launch our new ‘Chichester Business Breakfast’ in partnership with Chichester College. The feedback has been fantastic and we have had several sessions sell-out in advance. As Vice-Principal of the College, I am immensely proud to see our students catering and serving breakfast to over 80 people and learning the skills that will help them get a job. The breakfast programme continues into the second half of the year with speakers including Spirit FM’s Managing Director, Sally Austin and Andrew Holder from The Bank of England. My advice is to book early to guarantee your space! Our monthly networking meetings also go from strength to strength. I always enjoy the opportunity to visit the offices/ bases of our hosts which have seen us move from Westgate Leisure Centre to the University of Chichester and Irwin Mitchell. Over the next six months, we’ll have the opportunity to visit Chichester Cathedral, The Prebendal School and The Academy, Selsey. One of the highlights of these meetings is always the opportunity to welcome new members and I think that the diversity of our membership base is testament to the inclusivity and zest of our Chamber; having members spanning sole traders through SMEs and Corporates and covering the public, private and third sectors is something that I think benefits us all and contributes to our ability to truly represent the voice of Chichester businesses. It is my personal commitment to continue to grow the membership of the Chamber through this approach. I am also delighted that the Chamber is continuing with its support for the Chichester Business Improvement District (BID). We share a joint commitment to making Chichester a great place to live, work and do business. Through collaboration with the BID, Visit Chichester and other local groups, we can ensure that we are championing the issues that matter to our members and that benefit the wider economy. Our relationships with the local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnership remain strong and we are frequently consulted on our members’ views on issues around infrastructure, economic development, skills and business development. I hope to see you at one of our events – I am particularly looking forward to the ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour at Tangmere Airfield Nurseries – who grow a staggering 65 million peppers each year – and all from Chichester!

The voice of Chichester business chichestercci.org.uk DIGITAL MARKETING EVENTS
Why your business should be on Maps Are you a local business or organisation relying on local trade? Do customers, clients or visitors come to your premises? If you have answered yes to either of these questions, it is important to add your business to online maps. Most of us turn to a smartphone, tablet or computer to get information these days. It’s convenient and quick. This includes the move away from using traditional printed maps to find a location and get directions. It also extends to using our phones while we’re on the go, to look for local cafés, shops, petrol stations and so on.
But, the navigation service in Apple Maps is used three times as often as Google Maps on iPhones and iPads. Ultimately, Google Maps is the biggest player, but don’t forget to add your business to Apple Maps and Bing Maps too. Apple Maps is the default for iPhones and other Apple products. Not forgetting Bing, which still holds around 10% of UK market share. Google doesn’t divulge its Map usage data, but of the three main Maps providers, it is estimated that market share is approximately:
How Maps can help your business
Google Maps: 68%
Potential customers searching for, say, restaurants in their locality, will open Maps on their phone and find that you are close by. A new customer for you!
Apple Maps: 22%
On search engine results pages, map listings come at or near the top, so straight away your business is visible.
It is free to add your business to online maps, so don’t miss out on the benefits to your organisation.

Degree Apprenticeships at the University of Chichester

XXX
Degree apprenticeships bring together the best of vocational training and higher education and enable apprentices to combine University study with valuable ‘on the job’ training. The University of Chichester offers the Digital Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprenticeship and Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. Bringing new dynamics to established groups Companies also find they benefit with new ideas from apprentices. David Gayler, HR Manager at Sussex Healthcare said: “We are enjoying having someone who asks the ‘why do we do it that way?’ question, who compares theory with practice and who is bringing a new dynamic to an established group.” Stephani degree apprentice at Sussex Healthcare agrees: “My degree allows me to understand and then suggest improvements to the systems currently in use and how they are maintained, and be able to present reasoning behind the choices with clarity and confidence.” Meanwhile, apprentices are benefitting from gaining a degree while acquiring valuable work experience, earning a salary and avoiding paying any fees. Alexander Dagg of SSE chose the Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Degree apprenticeship because of the “ability to develop his career as well as his academic qualifications”. James Seden-Smith Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprentice at Red River Software found that the recurring advice was “Do a year in industry - it’s what employees look for” and he decided that a degree apprenticeship offered “four years in industry, alongside a degree and would give me a huge advantage against my peers when applying for future jobs.” The first group of apprentices began the Digital Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship in September 2016 and both apprentices and employers are already seeing the benefits of this way of training and developing staff. Companies that have employed one or more apprentices are finding that is it a great way to attract talent, shape them to the needs of their business and to make sure that their skills are current and relevant. Red River Software MD Simon Pringle explained: “We were suffering from the usual skills shortage and wanted to be able to train people our own way. Via this route we get to do that and the apprentices quickly become very talented. For us there hasn’t been a time when they haven’t been working on a commercial project, which is very beneficial to the company. In the digital sector this is the most positive step towards addressing the skills shortage in my memory.”
‘Breath of fresh air’ Businesses agree that working with the University is a positive experience. “Dealing with the team at Chichester really is like a breath of fresh air! Everyone is approachable and easy to contact I couldn't praise them more highly” said David Gayler, HR Manager at Sussex Healthcare, whilst Lead Developer at Communications Agency NLS, Jamie Scott, said “Everyone we’ve dealt with at the University has been extremely helpful in making sure that the scheme was right for us, finding the perfect candidate and continuing to support us and answer any questions we have had during the programme.” Find out more: Find out about the University of Chichester’s degree apprenticeships at www.chi.ac.uk/apprentice. The voice of Chichester business chichestercci.org.uk NETWORKING
What is Speed Networking? Not to be confused with speed dating(!), speed networking provides you with the opportunity to meet a lot of other businesses in a short space of time. Using an innovative 3-way format, the events are both invaluable and great fun.
How to be prepared? Your approach will need to be very targeted in the time frame – so prepare your introduction in advance. It’s thirsty work, so accept the water on offer. and bring plenty of business cards!
How does it work? The room is set with clusters of three chairs numbered 1-3. You choose a number and maintain it for the duration of the speed networking. Number 1 moves clockwise around the room, number 2 moves anti-clockwise and number 3 remains static (the favourite seat!). Where there are two delegates attending from one business they should choose a different number to ensure that they are moving in the opposite direction. Every 3 minutes a whistle is blown and numbers 1 and 2 move onto the next group. You should move on promptly and follow up during the social networking if a match or interest has been identified. It may not be possible in the time to network with everyone, however further and follow-up networking, together with targeted information on the networking wall, may be enjoyed during and after refreshments.

Brendon went on to to say, "Before we moved to the new premises we were using serviced offices in Chichester. As the team was growing, we were fast running out of space and desperately needed to acquire bigger premises. We had found the perfect office space but it needed a lot of refurbishment and set about finding investment.

During the process, Amanda gave us a lot of constructive feedback and guidance, which we believe was critical to us having been awarded the grant. The grant enabled us to move and continue to grow our business, in the ideal office. We wouldn’t have been awarded the Grant without Amanda’s help. The voice of Chichester business chichestercci.org.uk BID
Building business opportunity and security of our City has to now work even harder in the event of reduced numbers of ‘bobbies on the beat’.
With an 82% majority vote (last November) in favour of Chichester retaining a Business Improvement District, April 1st saw the start of the second term of the Chichester BID, 2017-2022. The BID2 team of Charlotte, Jeanette and Colin is looking forward to five years of opportunity to build business support in Chichester City Centre. Key targets are to keep Chichester thriving and current, supporting efforts to raise conversion rates at the till and access to buyers for our professional services. This cannot happen without strong partnerships, starting with our 750 members of course, but also including organisations like the Chamber. The two organisations have long shared office space and it is hoped to strengthen this partnership under BID2, building new opportunities together for growth and skills among our entrepreneurs in the service and commercial sectors. Teaming up with ChiBAC (Chichester Businesses Against Crime) was the unsung success of BID1 as far as our shops and pubs were concerned, and this important relationship for the safety
Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) were set up in 2004 to fund the context in which business takes place, ideally focusing on the visitor economy and business growth. But while the private sector have control of this investment, policy has remained firmly with the public authorities and this gives rise to much frustration across the business community.
Key targets are to keep Chichester thriving and current, supporting efforts to raise conversion rates at the till and access to buyers for our professional services. In an effort to influence public policy development on behalf of all members, the BID2 team is building a more collaborative relationship with our three local authorities. This has already led to the District Council matching our members’ financial contribution to the renewal of Visit Chichester. This investment has allowed Chichester BID’s marketing budget to be doubled to promote the City Centre to the outside world through a new agreement with a revitalized Visit Chichester, our destination management organisation, to put Chichester firmly on the visitor map.
