niversidad de las Américas Puebla is characterized by excellence in all areas, which has resulted in important achievements. This year we obtained five stars from QS Quacquarelli Symonds, thus becoming the first one-campus university in Latin America with this certification. A fundamental axis of the UDLAP strategic plan is to receive accreditation for its study programs, both by national and international organizations. For example, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited four engineering programs this year. This means that the university has proven to apply the best academic practices at the international level when evaluated by external organizations. Likewise, we have consolidated our relationship with prominent organizations such as UNESCO with the establishment of a UNESCO Chair (in Hydro-Meteorological Risks), an honor bestowed to universities and academic groups that are internationally renowned. This will allow us to continue creating knowledge in the emblematic research topics that make UDLAP an outstanding institution. In addition to academic excellence, there were important results in sports: our teams won championships in taekwondo, track and field, soccer, and football, reaffirming that our students receive a well-rounded education at the university.
One constant at Universidad de las Américas Puebla is the continuous investments to improve our facilities so students may have adequate installations to develop their academic, research, and recreational activities during their stay at the university. This year, we built the IOS Development Lab, the first learning and app development lab in a Latin American university, which offers a multi-disciplinary space to design and develop mobile apps, thus providing a global competitive advantage. The results and achievements of this year derive from having clear and well-defined goals, an excellent faculty who trains critic and innovative students, and the support of technological tools and facilities that the university provides in order to achieve the institutional mission, all with UDLAP community’s daily work. Four School of Engineering licenciatura programs received approval from ABET’s (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) Engineering Accreditation Commission: Industrial, Mechanical, Civil, and Mechatronic Engineering; these accreditations show that the respective programs meet quality standards. Likewise, a formal process has started to submit the Food, Chemical, and Computer Systems Engineering programs for review before the aforementioned organization. On the other hand, the School of Business and Economics continues the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation process.

In 2016, the university welcomed the visit of the verifying committee to evaluate compliance with a capacity report in order to continue the process of institutional re-accreditation before FIMPES, the Federation of Mexican Private Institutions of Higher Education. During 2017 UDLAP received the verifying committee that would follow up the second

part of the process of institutional re-accreditation, which took place from February 27 to March 2. The result of the re accreditation process will be known in May 2017. The following graph shows the distribution of the students and organizations in the three categories. In 2016 several collaboration agreements for professional practices were signed, the most relevant being with DIF Nacional, the Honorable Congress of Puebla State, Puebla’s Human Rights Commission, Televisa S.A. de C.V. (Grupo Televisa CDMX), Rosewood Hotel, Maya Kobá, Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel in Angelópolis, Tesoros de Puebla A.C., Fundación Amparo, and the Center for Children´s Rehabilitation and Inclusion of Puebla (CRIT).

Rankings During the last year, UDLAP has consolidated its presence in the main national and international rankings; this way, it reaffirms its academic prestige and the impact that the institution has on the business, culture, artistic, and sports sectors and on society. QS Stars gave UDLAP a five-star rating after its audit. This makes it the first unicampus university in Latin America to obtain this distinction. Quality education, employability of alumni, infrastructure, internationalization, inclusion, and arts and culture are the categories that obtained this maximum score. It is worth noting that UDLAP has given preeminence to art and culture in Mexico. Today, it is the only private university in Latin America with five stars in this category, resulting from its cultural events, the institutional investment in this area, and the outstanding students and prestigious professors in the field. At the international level, QS Latin America classified UDLAP as number 20 among private universities. This ranking considers the quality and prestige of the faculty,

international standards that guarantee the teaching-learning process, international recognition, and employers’ recognition. In this same year, the magazine América Economía ranked the Master’s program in Business Administration as one of the best in Latin America by awarding it the 22nd place among the more than 40 institutions evaluated in the region. In 2017, this same magazine identified UDLAP as the second best private university in Mexico and the first in the region.

At the end of the Spring 2016 term, feedback from 96% of the courses taught was received, achieving 71% participation and an average of 4.51, on a scale of 1 to 5. At the end of Fall 2016, 95% of the total academic offer participated, with a response of 72% and an average score of 4.52 on the same scale. The teaching evaluation results ascertain UDLAP´s high academic level and its commitment to promote a quality culture that helps it to remain classified as an excellent institution.

UDLAP endeavors constantly to be known because of its quality education, scientific research, artistic creation, and technological development. This is the reason the university promotes actions to ensure the unvarying quality of its faculty, and its participation in research, consulting, continuous education, and other institutional projects. During this period, over 700 full and part time professors taught at the university. Likewise, for the past three years the faculty with advanced degrees has continued to be above 95%.
The university, concerned for the faculty’s development, has a Program to Update Teaching (PAD) that in 2016 offered more than 90 courses that derived in two lines of work: ADD, High Teaching Performance, and TE, Teaching Technology.

Research Projects The university has become stronger by developing research projects headed by our faculty. In 2016 there were 32 projects funded externally, where 54 full time professors participated. Ten of these projects are tied directly to industry and resulted in innovation and technological development. It is important to note that during this year the university directly supported 116 research projects that, although they did not have external funding, allowed the participation in research to 121 full-time professors. For the current year, 23 projects will be managed with external funds and 139 projects without external financing, with 147 full time professors involved. Finally, it is worth mentioning that a patent was obtained for a Converter System of Hydraulic Energy in a Flux of Swaying Rotational Mechanical Energy to Generate Electricity Through Sea Waves, developed by Dr. Pedro Bañuelos Sánchez, professor of the School of Engineering.

It will focus on basic and applied research; on the design of adaptive and abating measures of the effects of the aforementioned events; on informing and educating policy makers and the general public; and on educating advanced human resources through the Doctorate in Water Science. One prominent project of 2016 is associated with this chair. Named “Integral Management of the Bravo River Basin Under Climate Change Scenarios”, it is being directed by Dr. Polioptro Fortunato Martínez, in cooperation with CONAGUA, the National Water Commission, and CONACYT. Its aim is to propose scientifically based recommendations for a comprehensive water management in the Bravo river basin, under different climate change scenarios, with a systemic and multi-disciplinary analysis implemented in a dynamic model of integral management of the basin’s water. In addition, 13 research projects were completed – with an investment of 12.2 million pesos – that are directly linked to the emblematic lines of research being followed in the research doctorates. Noticeable among them for their connection to industry and vanguard lab equipment acquisition are: • Development of New Bio-regulators, Biostimulants, Fertilizers, and Anti-pathogens for the Agricultural Sector, and New Products for the Coloring Sector, headed by Dr. Luis Ricardo Hernández, in collaboration with Laboratorios Agroenzymas S.A de CV.
• Development of an Exoskeleton for the Productive Process, coordinated by Dr. Gibran Etcheverry Doger, with Volkswagen de México S.A de CV. • A Study of the Effects of Different Methods of Homogenization on the Stability and Liberation of Encapsulated Oils Through Multiple Emulsions, developed by Dr. María Teresa Jiménez Munguía with CONACYT. • Antimicrobial Activity in Vapor Phase of the Active Components of Diverse Essential Oils, headed by Dr. Aurelio López Malo-Vigil, jointly with CONACYT. • Quantitative Modeling of Microbial Inactivation by Applying Short Wave Ultraviolet Light, in Combination with Other Factors, developed by Dr. Enrique Palou García with CONACYT. • Epistemology Beyond the Text. Regarding enrollment, a larger market penetration was achieved in strategic states for the university because of their geographical proximity; Veracruz, Morelos, Hidalgo, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Quintana Roo, Estado de México and Mexico City contributed more new licenciatura students. In addition, during this year the licenciaturas of the School of Sciences were promoted, through the UDLAP Science Prize: “Where is the science?” contest, which involved more than 40 projects presented by young people of Preparatory School of the entire Mexican republic where, through a video, participants displayed scientific achievements in disciplines like Physics, Biology, Pharmaceutical Science, and Nutrition Sciences.

Regarding international enrollment, it increased by 15% in licenciatura programs, compared to 2015, with students coming from foreign high schools. Similarly, the students enrolled in special programs increased 10% with respect to 2015. The university has an important scholarship program that has been growing year by year, allowing an increased percentage of students that benefit from this program. It is important to note that close to 80% of enrolled students are part of this program.
Each year the university honors the best licenciatura and graduate student in each school, awarding the Scholar UDLAP medal to the student with the best grade – point average. In this occasion the students awarded this distinction are:

The Honors Program promotes academic excellence and is made up of the students with the best GPAs. It encourages their progress with a research project or artistic creation done with the one-on-one advising of professors, artists, and researchers. Since the beginning in 2013, the program has grown and now has 550 students who are involved in research or artistic creation as part of their curriculum.

Enrollment Growth
In order to support our students, in 2012 we established an academic tutoring program that allows every student to have a member of our full-time faculty as a tutor. Some of the activities of tutors are to inform students of their academic progress and advancement, to acquaint them with study programs, and to orient them about careers pathways so they may take informed decisions about their particular field of work. During 2016 the number of students attending tutoring sessions increased, thanks to the work done by full-time professors who thus help new students to adapt to university life. At the same time they continue to inspire re-enrolled students to advance their academic development. As can be seen in the graph, both the offer of academic tutoring sessions and the number of students served has increased significantly to cover 28% of students enrolled in the semester.
The Academic Advisor program allows students to receive professional attention to provide them with tools to improve their academic performance, offering support in identifying and developing abilities to overcome the academic challenges of university life. In 2016, this program welcomed a total of 937 students, with 2,993 visits grouped in the following categories: • Peer study groups • Nursing program • Change of major • Academic follow-up (regular students, athletes and art scholarship)

Advisements Offered by Center
To help the students’ academic performance, the learning centers for Math, Languages, Academic Writing, and Critical Thinking have continued and have been strengthened by controlling attendance, advising, and historical reports; also, there are seminars for the professors who work in them. The centers´ work is based on in-person advising, individual advising by professors, support through learning resources, and diagnostic of previous knowledge. The Center for Academic Writing and Critical Thinking looks for the integration of an academic community that has the tools for academic and scientific discourse. The Math Learning Center aims to develop mathematical ability in students, responding to the challenges they face during their university studies. Additionally, it offers diagnostic exams and material to practice during advising sessions. The Language Learning Center promotes foreign language learning, study, advising, and teaching. It has also designed diagnostic exams in five English levels: two pre-university and three for English I, II and III.

Considering the number of students serviced by school, the greatest proportion corresponds to the School of Science, especially to the Nursing program, followed by Business and Economics for peer study group and academic follow-up together with the School of Engineering and, finally, the Schools of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities for the development of student abilities.

Student Mobility UDLAP offers diverse exchange programs with foreign universities that allow its students to complement their university studies, and to carry out professional practices, community service, and research. As for international students, their number grew by 5% with respect to 2015 in the category of “other programs.”
During 2016, graduate students of the 32 Mexican states and 18 cities in North and South America, Europe, and Asia participated in this program. UDLAP offered ten online graduate programs (that attracted 252 new students) with a total of 201 online courses. The distance master programs UDLAP-SEP of elementary and secondary education offered 54 courses, with 182 new students enrolled. Additionally, five on-campus sessions were conducted for these programs focused on developing competencies in teachers and administrators. 231 students, from Puebla and other states, attended these sessions to take part in 6 lectures and 7 workshops that UDLAP hosted in its facilities. As part of the improvements in distance courses, 180 introduction videos and audios and over 4,000 class hours taught via WebConference, using Blackboard Collaborate were offered for these 255 courses. During this year 333 students graduated, 75% more than in 2015 as shown in the graph below:

The latter victory adds points to the first place of the women’s three-person of María José Ramírez Suárez, Enya Youalli Nava Delgado and Lucy Tania Morales García; and the 3rd individual place of Lucy Morales obtained the national sub-championship in forms by teams. In the CONDDE tournament, the National Council of Sports Education, Nayabei Estefania Izelo Hernández and Luis Gerardo Cervantes García earned two 2nd place medals. And, in the World Championship celebrated in Lima, Peru, Lucy Morales was part of the national team that merited a bronze medal in the three-person modality. After an absence of nine years, the volleyball teams participated in the CONDDE nationals, where they were runners-up. As a result of her participation in this event, the student Deyanira Lopez Gil was selected for the national team to participate in this year’s Copa Panamericana in the Dominican Republic. Also of note is the performance of José Armando Valencia Moreno, CONADEIP’s and Universiada Nacional medal-winner, who is champion for the third consecutive year at the National Olympics, Federation’s champion in the 3,000 m. steeplechase, and a qualified competitor for the 2016 Central American Games. Women’s track and field achieved CONADEIP’s national sub-championship in Guadalajara, Jalisco, earning a total of 22 medals (1 gold, 14 silver and 7 bronze). Another outstanding athlete of this year is Michelle Palafox Flores, who won a medal in CONADEIP, was a winner at the Federation Olympics and National Olympics in the 800 m race where, for three consecutive years, she has won the gold and holds the national record in this discipline with 2.08 minutes. Hannia has an academic average of 9.9 (on a scale of 0 to 10) and represented Mexico and UDLAP in the World Championship of Relays at the Bahamas in March, placing 4th. As for the women´s soccer team, the Aztecas have contested four finals and achieved two championships. Recently, Diana Jaqueline Rodríguez Carrillo was called to participate in the national selection for the World Sub 20 that took place in Papua, New Guinea. The men’s soccer team returned this year to the first division, winning the CONADIEP championship, the top student soccer tournament. To close 2016, the Aztecas football team is CONADEIP’s national champion, winning against ITESM Monterrey´s Borregos 43 to 40. José Humberto Noriega Montiel’s performance is to be noted: he was named “most valuable player” by CONADEIP, at the same time that the head coach Eric Lawrence Fisher won the award as “Coach of the Year” from

the same organization. As the relationship between CONADEIP and the ONEFA league resumed, the team took part in the “champion of champions” game, where the Aztecas obtained the title of best team in the nation, after winning against the Auténticos Tigres of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León at the Gaspar Mass stadium of Monterrey; it is important to note that since 2007 Mexico did not have a football national champion. Finally, the team had the opportunity to compete in the United States against the University of San Diego, which belongs to Division 1 of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Aztecas is the first Mexican team to face a rival of this category in its own campus. At the end of 2016, Mexico hosted Football´s World Championship at the ITESM Stadium in Monterrey, N.L. where ten of UDLAP’s student players participated.

Most activities took place on campus, although some were conducted in places like Puebla’s Cathedral and the Exhibition Hall of Puebla’s Fair, reaching over 42,000 persons for the year. Two students who have an art scholarship had outstanding performances in national competitions: Leonardo Joel Sánchez and Elena Ananyeva. Leonardo obtained an award

During Fall 2016, the Marketing, Visual Information Design, and Communications Sciences academic departments collaborated to analyze topics related to violence in couples, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and emotional problems, with the objective of generating information, applications, and material for campaigns to prevent risky behaviors. Intending to reaffirm the cultural diversity and critical talent of the UDLAP community, the sixth edition of an essay contest took place with the topic “Aftermath of Gender Roles in Mexican Culture and its Influence on the University Population”, where 24 students of various licenciaturas participated and the best four essays presented received a prize. The jury consisted of professors from the five schools.

Our student, tenor Leonardo Joel Sánchez, won first place in the Carlo Morelli national opera contest.
Student organizations are a good place to develop leadership qualities. During 2016 more than 150 sports, academic, cultural, recreational and social events were organized. For the Spring term 22 organizations registered as such, and 24 for the Fall term, with a total of 978 members, achieving an increase of 13% when compared with the previous year. In a similar way, CEUDLAP, the Student Council of Universidad de las Américas Puebla, is a student representation model in the country for developing leadership abilities and teamwork. The 2016-2017 Council consisted of 178 members that worked in the executive and judicial branches, 24 boards, 9 interim boards, and 5 School student representatives. Throughout the year they carried out 250 academic, cultural, sports, and social events for the entire student community. In October, the traditional “Legends Tour” attracted 1,173 attendees. In February 2016, the first edition of TEDx UDLAP, “Unconventional Thinking”, took place with more than 80 persons in attendance and 12 guest speakers, becoming a model event for other universities. Likewise, in September UDLAP hosted the Third Encounter of University Radio, which was attended by five universities of Puebla State, and 120 students; during this event workshops were conducted and Dr. Leonardo Curzio Gutiérrez – communicator, researcher, and political analyst – who delivered the keynote speech La radio más viva que nunca (Radio, more alive than ever). In regard to the psychological counseling service, the trend continues to be upwards, as can be seen in the graph.

On the other hand, the Russian student Elena Ananyeva of the Licenciatura in Music won first prize in the first National Piano Contest of Xalapa. Finally, the student Sebastian Santamaría-Barajas, alumna Cintia Pérez-Navarro and Prof. Cristina Goletti, participated in the fifth edition of the 4 × 4 TJ Night 2016 contest, held on April 29th in the city of Tijuana, Mexico. This team participated with two proposals, one made by the Prof. Cristina Goletti and alumna Cintia Pérez-Navarro, and another choreography created by Sebastian Santamaría-Barajas, who won the award for the best choreography. In addition, Cintia Pérez was awarded as Best Female Interpreter in the contest.

Residential Colleges UDLAP´s Residential Colleges offer our students lodgings in a secure environment that promotes a comprehensive development in living and learning communities based on values such as responsibility, freedom, tolerance, respect, and solidarity. In 2016, the Residential Colleges had 1500 spaces. Occupation during Spring term was 88.3%, reaching in 100% in the Fall, for a total of 3,251 residents. For this reason, during this period the scope and relevance of activities was heightened by continuous education courses, programs oriented to society, strategic alliances, cooperation with cultural and artistic institutions, important exhibitions of works of art, and presence in the media, besides awakening the students’ interest in social responsibility programs, publishing books written by our faculty and the university community, and the presence of distinguished guests who delivered nine keynote lectures during this period.
University Extension UDLAP Consultores has consolidated its position with training programs and consultancies for the private sector, the government and society, earning an income of more than 27 million pesos, 32.5% more than in 2015. Concerning continuous education, 20 training programs for the general public were offered; the most popular among them: • Preparation for the Project Management Certification • Cultural administration

As part of the UDLAP’s cooperation agreement with the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research, which has as objective to develop research projects to improve the sector, a Project Management Certificate was offered to formalize several research projects with studies backed by methodologies learned through this program. Following a request by the Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Puebla, courses were taught in Cultural Administration and Drafting of Cultural Projects, in order to train their academics to elaborate cultural projects and re-
nies such as Faurecia, Federal Mogul, Bancoppel, and Grupo Schaeffler. In consulting, a joint effort with BASF is building a granulation model that optimizes production times and equipment. A curricular review was conducted for the Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Puebla, in Huehuetla. And a course on corporate etiquette and protocol was offered for directors of Faurecia. In a strategic Alliance with Universia of Banco Santander, we offered training and continuous education programs for the Federal Judiciary Council. And regarding the consulting area for government services, beginning in 2016 consulting work was started for the municipalities of Saltillo, Coahuila and Atlixco, Puebla, which will conclude at the end of 2017 and mid-2018, respectively. There was another consulting contract with the Tulancingo, Hidalgo municipality in August, this one on closing accounts for their term; and that same month another program started for the government of the Quintana Roo state and the Chetumal, Quintana Roo municipality. As for applied research, in April the study Impacto fiscal por el uso y comercialización de software ilegal en México (Fiscal Impact of the Use and Commercialization of Illegal Software in Mexico) was presented to the media. This study was done at the request of SAT, the Tax Administration System. In July, SAT requested from UDLAP Consultores a study on Added Value Tax and Income Tax Evasion, because of the results achieved in the previous one. For this new project an interdisciplinary group of academics and researchers was gathered, and its results delivered to SAT in December, to be presented in April 2017. The CIEF, Center for Research on Family Businesses, continues a program of research, training, and consulting. Regarding continuing education, a second edition of the certificate “Facing Change in Family Businesses”, which included theoretical training and consulting, was offered to the business families that participated. Additionally, there were consulting programs on family protocols, succession, management and administration, and others. As for research, the book La sucesión e institucionalización de la empresa familiar en México, was presented in August, in conjunction with the company PWC and published by the Instituto Mexicano de Ejecutivos de Finanzas; it was presented by Cosme Torrado, a member of the board of Grupo ALSEA. Likewise, the first national study on family businesses, called Radiografía de la empresa familiar en México (X-Ray of Family Business in Mexico), was published; this is a national study that discloses the current situation of family business in the country (by state) and makes comparative analyses to draft support policies by region. It is worth mentioning that this work earned the 2016 Adalberto Viesca Sada prize, organized by Universidad de Monterrey, where more than 10 countries

quest funds to implement them. With this same university, a course on Academic Advising was offered to strengthen its institutional advising program. During Fall 2016, the university offered the Empany´s Hot Company a workshop on Management Skills with a Humanist Approach that dealt with topics of leadership, decision-making, teamwork, emotional intelligence, and verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. Additionally, a certificate was offered on Project Management for members of Canacintra Coatzacoalcos, with attendance from leaders of companies in the region. Its aim was to develop abilities and learn to handle tools to prepare entire projects, through practical exercises planning real projects. In collaboration with the Secretary of Public Education of Puebla state, a summer school project was carried out to train 25 tutors from Cuetzalan, Chignahuapan and Huehuetla, promoting reflection, and appreciation of the socio-cultural reality of indigenous communities. During the workshop “Regional Music” they were taught, through practical application, how to reuse everyday materials to convert them to musical instruments, so the attendees become aware of the importance of music as a means of cultural identity. In conjunction with the Sub-Direction of Epidemiologic Vigilance of the Health Secretary of Puebla state, certificate programs on Hospital Infections, International Epidemic Vigilance, and Emerging Diseases trained 70 health public servants, mainly hospital epidemiologists and health personnel of the International Health Module. The certificate courses were offered on campus from August to November. Regarding the Enterprise Solutions programs, which are personalized and customized, several of these programs were designed for the financial and automotive industry in Puebla, and led to a strong alliance with Volkswagen Financial Services for training services on topics as effective English communication, international norms of financial information, lean kaizen service, financial culture and, for the first time, an executive coaching program to maximize interpersonal abilities. The program Suppliers Development, funded by Prodiat of the Secretary of the Economy with Volkswagen de México, has ended: it consisted of training, consulting, and executive coaching for close to 200 professionals of the automotive sector and suppliers such as Grupo Sese, MexAbat, Seglo and Dreaxlmaier. A hybrid program of consulting and training was conducted for the new Audi plant in Puebla, which covered the legal, fiscal, and financial requirements for their international representatives in Mexico. For the third consecutive year, an international certification in executive coaching was offered jointly with the Business Coaching School and Neuroliderazgo, for more than 15 directors, consultants and top executives of compa-

In the area of culture and artistic heritage, UDLAP collaborated with institutions such as FONCA – the National Endowment for Culture and the Arts; INBA – the National Institute of Fine Arts; the Rufino Tamayo Museum; the MUAC – University Museum of Contemporary Art, part of UNAM; PAC – the Contemporary Art Board of Museo Amparo; the National Museum of Mexican Railroads; UTSA – the University of Texas at San Antonio; INAOE – the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics; AFP – the French Alliance of Puebla; CECAP – the State Council for Culture and Arts of Puebla; Puebla’s City Hall, BUAP – the Autonomous University of Puebla; Ambulante, Itinerant documentaries; FIF – the International Photography Festival ; Puebla´s Colegio Humboldt ; ESPAC, a Public Space for the Arts; and other independent organizations of art and culture. At the same time, Capilla del Arte UDLAP joined the national program of cultural animation Desde los grandes teatros del mundo (From the Great Theaters of the World), as the unique location in Puebla´s historic downtown where high quality videos of great international performances and the world´s best orchestras were shown free of charge. Attendance at the cultural seasons in Capilla del Arte UDLAP surpassed 45,000 national and international visitors, 46% coming from the center-south region of the country, and 7% from abroad. It also has over 15,000 followers in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is the only cultural space in Puebla with a radio show in which each year, since 2013, there have been 52 broadcasts in 96.9 FM of Así lo dijo Duchamp (So Said Duchamp) in collaboration with Radio BUAP. 167 cultural events took place at this location, including temporary exhibits, museum nights, Art and Coffee Chats,
concerts, movies, theater, and literature sessions for the entire family. It was also chosen as an alternate education venue for the certificate on Cultural Management, in collaboration with UDLAP Consultores. At the same place, the second floor was inaugurated and open for temporary exhibitions with the show Creation in Movement: generation 2015-2016, second period with works of young artists that were part of the FONCA program in disciplines like architecture, applied arts, visual arts, and audiovisual media. The major collective art exhibition Come in: a city survives, on urban and social transformation themes from an ecologic, architectonic, and artistic perspective was also shown here. And, for the first time in Puebla, there were works of international renown shown, by artists like Picasso, Rothko, Magritte, DeKooning and Tamayo in the exhibition Museological Essay Number 2: from modern to contemporary, in collaboration with the Rufino Tamayo Museum and the National Institute of Fine Arts. The first theater season started with three plays: The Rhetoric of Silence, Paper Women, and Divorced, Evangelicals and Vegetarians, with academics and students performing. Several lectures were presented in parallel with the temporary exhibitions, with discussion panels and special guests Dra . Marcelina Arce, Juan Carlos Pereda, Lizeth Arau, and Zony Maya. The exhibition Post neo mexicanismos, that gathers the most relevant artists in Mexican painting form the end of the 20th century, curated by Willy Kautz, alumni and renowned curator in the national arts milieu. The exhibition Mexico in Landscapes rescued, in collaboration with the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation, the photography portfolio of Armando Salas Portugal. To commemorate the 400 years of the death of Cervantes and Shakespeare, exhibitions, book presentations, workshops and poetry readings by UDLAP’s faculty and students were presented. For the first time – with the Arts and Humanities Deanship, PAC, and Museo Amparo – Capilla del Arte UDLAP was the site chosen for the 13th Theory Symposium of Contemporary Art (SITAC), where more than thirty experts in art, economics, public policies, biology, history, philosophy, and international sociology gathered to discuss the role of art and culture in a long-term development plan to support the social fabric of a community with current interdisciplinary public policies. In cooperation with FONCA, the exhibition Photographic Memory: 100 encounters with young creators presented the works of five well-known Mexican photographers: Rogelio Cuéllar, Benjamín Alcántara, Víctor Mendiola, Miguel Morales and Enrique Rivera, who collected the faces of interns that belonged to this program for the past 27 years. As for the UDLAP Art Collection, the project Workshop Interviews began, which shares anecdotes of different art-

The Aztecas Schools have contributed to the process of educating and initiating children and youngsters in sports. By effort and discipline, the participants in the football school reached the semifinals in 2016 in the AA juvenile category of the FADEMAC, the Mexican Federation of Football. Currently, the program continues to be successful, as more young players have joined the representative team of UDLAP´s Aztecas. Likewise, the UDLAP summer program offered three options: Summer Course for children 4 to 12 years old, Aztecas Tennis and Aztecas Soccer School both for participants 6 to 16 years old. The three programs welcomed 176 children and adolescents, achieving their goal of being a personal development experience, and a stronger link of UDLAP with society. The Leadership Program for Indigenous Youth – PLJI, in its sixth edition, offered an academic program for national and foreign indigenous students, with the strategic support of the public and private sectors. UDLAP, characteristically socially responsible, promotes the support for a cause akin to its activities: education. PLJI, the product of five years of continuous work and a vision of improved academics has evolved and presented for 2016 three lines which answer the contextual interest of all

TV UDLAP In 2016 the third season of El interrogatorio, a TV program done by students and for students of different disciplines, was recorded. The second season was aired by Televisa’s Foro TV channel, whereas this year there were two versions recorded, one for TV and an extended one, for a total of 32 programs and over 130,0000 visits in YouTube. Also in 2016, there were several collaborations with newscaster Carlos Loret de Mola in his program Primero noticias, which reaches an audience of 12 million persons per day: sixteen students participated in different produc-
Socially Responsible Outreach Day to day life is a constant learning experience for students, since they not only attend class to acquire knowledge, but also to cement a civic ethics and strengthen social commitment. For this reason, the university, with its available infrastructure and means, assumes its social commitment to put forward real solutions to real problems; thus, it involves students in projects that raise social awareness in their own disciplines. Currently, the School of Engineering is manufacturing a prosthetic hand for a little girl who needs one powered by batteries, using a 3D printer to do it; the first prototype has already been made and during this year a final prosthetic hand with the requirements of functionality, aesthetics, and comfort will be finished. The goal is to fabricate a functional hand that allows for tasks such as grabbing and lifting small and light objects. This type of liaison, as a strategic tool, looks to approach government and business organizations and civil society to obtain mutual benefits, with an implicit commitment and responsibility to build strong internal and external relations, so the UDLAP community may use its talents for social betterment. For this reason, the institution carries out a Social Service and Volunteers Fair to present spaces so students may approach organizations that cooperate with the university in fostering projects that justify its public respon-
sibility in different social causes and offers opportunities to carry out a social service. For the Fall 2016 fair, 39 organizations attended and 1,241 students requested information about social service or volunteering, with marked presence of students of the third and fifth semesters. With this same spirit, project Cortometeatro began also in Fall, aiming to generate social topics discussions among students, either as actors or spectators, and creating scenes that represent current social problems. Short plays that last 10 to 15 minutes are performed for no more than 15 spectators, providing a common space for debating social problems through art. For Fall 2016, 92 persons participated, including parents, faculty and staff.
Projects and Agreements with Organizations During 2016 several collaboration agreements were signed regarding social service with SEDIF, the National System for the Comprehensive Development of Families, and with the Citizens Initiative to Promote a Culture of Dialogue. Also in this year, a new concept of institutional social service, called “strategic projects”, was added so students have more options in projects of special characteristics in complex social topics, with organizations that collaborate with UDLAP. These projects derive from a pilot project called “Social Integration Project”, designed by Teach 4 all México and UDLAP, which looks to sensitize and integrate the student community in a living experience with children and/or adolescents in elementary schools of the state. The pilot project operated in the summer with seven social service students who worked one week in six public schools of municipalities vulnerable to backward education.

For the 2016 program thirty Mexicans, two Ecuadorians, one Bolivian, and one Panamanian, all of them of indigenous extraction and enrolled in higher education, were selected. During four weeks, PLJI participants developed 6 comprehensive projects where, practicing what they learned, they put forward public policy proposals to improve their original communities. In this occasion, there were Central and South American participants, and from the Mexican states of Chiapas, Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, Yucatán, Tabasco, Quintana Roo, Chihuahua, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Nayarit and Querétaro, representing 15 national ethnic groups: Nahua, Totonaco, Tseltal, Maya, Zapoteco, Ch´Ol, Mixe, Me´Phaa, Tepehuano, Mazateco, Cuicateco, Tsotsil, Popoluca, Tarahumara and Otomí.

In addition, news clips with artists like José Luis Cuevas, Jorge Marín, Carlos Marín, and Graciela Iturbide were recorded to be shown as part of a series also presented by Carlos Loret in 8 broadcasts. For the Cannes Festival a special report of 10 TV clips was broadcast for two weeks. And for Morelia’s Movie Festival three more clips were broadcast by Paola Rojas, another popular newscaster and journalist. For six years, TVUDLAP has been positioned in the sports world as the benchmark in university sports coverage. Last year, it covered the Final Eight of the ABE league in Toluca, broadcasting a total of 16 live games in 5 days, with 23,438 viewers. And for Volleyball’s Four it aired 14 games followed by 11,077 viewers. This year, for the FBA 2016 season, it began transmissions via Livestream and Facebook for the first time, with a total of 311,595 viewers. In 2016, an Olympic year, it recorded 36 capsules with Enrique Garay, a well-known sports reporter and analyst, who has attended seven Summer Olympic Games; the capsules had over 195,000 views in YouTube. This collaboration opened the door so students and reporters of the FBA season had the opportunity to work side by side with an analyst who has covered 27 consecutive Super Bowls. In February 2016, special coverage of the Oscar ceremony in secondary screen was done from the facilities of Universal Mexico; six students from different licenciaturas were part of the staff in this production. Gabriel Hernández, Linda Cruz and Mauricio Durán were special guests at this event. The university carried out a special coverage of the United States election, with 35 students and 16 professors from dif-
ferent schools analyzing results during 17 hours continuous. Experts in economic and political topics, such as Ana María Salazar, Marcela Szimanski, Raymundo Riva Palacio and Juan Pablo de Leo took part in the discussions.

Outreach to Alumni This year, 5,220 contact records in our database were updated, about 17% of the total records of our 30,707 alumni. Mailing campaigns that promoted institutional events and projects achieved 458,920 direct hits, 14% more than last year. There was an increase in Facebook followers, reaching a total of 12,965, an annual growth of 11%; 780 publications generated 9,820 “likes”, 23% more than in 2015. Exaudlap groups also grew when compared 2015, reaching 24,023 users: the exaudlap Twitter account has now 4,522 followers, an 11% increase for the year. During 2016, 38 alumni were interviewed about their careers and professional advancement for social media, 10%
more than last year. These interviews were posted in the university’s social networks and blog, and printed in the magazine Visión exaudlap. Throughout the year, the alumni office and exaudlap representatives for each licenciatura organized several events to keep in touch and socialize; reunions for International Relations, MBA, Law, Industrial Engineering, Psychology and Design were held and there was also an ex-Azteca breakfast, the UDLAP race, a basketball reunion, and an alumni cocktail called Ruco Encuentro, attended by over 100 alumni. Alumni delivered twelve lectures and there were also four books published. Finally, the UDLAP Benefits Plan, a program that gives preferential treatment and discounts to the university community in different sectors, reached 13% more that in 2015 for a total of 320 agreements with companies, some of them alumni owned.
Outreach to Media The university was present in the media and in the community in 2016, recording 11,207 mentions in the press through bulletins, events, faculty and student participations on radio, press conferences, activities with AMPEP, as well as interviews and meetings with media directors. Internal and external communications were extended using means already at work, such as Infórmate, the online space UDLAP Informa, web calendar, screens, interviews in the media, Entérate, the academic publication project Expresiones UDLAP, Entorno Azteca, and the cultural events agenda. There is also a weekly edition of Talentos UDLAP that publiciz-

Institutional Design
Entorno UDLAP, a magazine about knowledge and innovation, and an important communication medium for academic and research life at the university, was created. es community activities through video in university’s platforms and a bulletin press. The academic portal Con TEXTO was created in 2015 to concentrate opinion materials; it contains and classifies reference materials of knowledge generation and dissemination, allowing for their easy location. In addition, there was extended coverage in the web of specific contents generated for the university’s social media containing information, videos, and designs adapted for online and other media: 160,697 photographs, 17 videos of events and activities, 6 digital animations for courses and institutional promotion, 4 Orgullo UDLAP special videos, and 19 Timelapse photographs of different spaces on campus.
In 2016, we strengthened the communication with the general public and the UDLAP community. Entorno UDLAP, a learning and innovation magazine, was created as a means to communicate UDLAP’s academic and research life; following this year’s trend, the magazine has a flat style design that includes UDLAP’s logo and the university’s full name in all graphic materials. This is meant to reinforce the institution’s brand presence. Also, the format and publication materials of Orgullo UDLAP was redesigned and is now printed in color to better highlight the community’s achievements. 2016 was a very productive year for Editorial UDLAP: inter-institutional alliances were strengthened and new ones were made; the collections Sapientia UDLAP, Biblioteca Antigua, and Memorias have solidified with distinctive characteristics. UDLAP ventured into a new relationship with UNESCO, via the International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean – IESALC – by participating in the Regional Observatory of Social Responsibility for Latin America and the Caribbean, ORSALC. The latter selected 20 Mexican universities, based on their international rankings, to participate in benchmarking to share good practices of territorial social responsibility (RST), a new twist on social responsibility focused on the subject of attention. At ORSALC’s invitation, the university participated in the 4th Regional Forum of Territorial Social Responsibility celebrated last August in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, with the topic “Higher education and territorial social responsibility: the case of the leadership program for indigenous youth”, presented by Dr. Laura Elena Romero López.

The printed catalog and a new website introducing the publications of Editorial UDLAP were presented during the 19th Altexto Network Assembly. The Altexto network is the most important editorial group in Mexico, given that the institutions that belong to this network publish more books than the Fondo de Cultura Económica. The catalog was also presented in seven local and national book fairs, among them the Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara, the most important editorial event of Latin America; and it was present at the International Book Fair of Frankfurt. Publishing collaborations with the Instituto Tecnológico de Puebla and with UDLAP Consultores were set up, at the same time that the close relationship with the Franciscan Province of the Holy Gospel is reflected in the Biblioteca Antigua collection.
Lectures Among the main achievements of 2016 the coordination of events with prestigious institutions is noteworthy, which contribute to the well-rounded education of students and to reaffirm UDLAP’s level of excellence in the academic, sports, cultural, artistic, scientific, and business world. Partnerships with businesses, organizations, and institutions for different programs and activities increased by updating the data of UDLAP’s strategic partners loyal to our institution, contributing to improve the institutional prestige. Financial Situation The university’s financial statements for the years 2016 (in process to be audited) and 2015 (audited) reflect a solid financial stability. Positive relations are in place with capacity to cover with current assets the short-term obligations, at the same time that the net working capital is positive. Cash and equivalents represent 188% of the short-term obligations. Investments in real estate, furnishings, and equipment for 111 million pesos were made in 2016. Taking into consideration the soundness of the current situation, financial institutions have given a confidence vote to UDLAP, opening credit lines for 190 million pesos, of which 137.5 million were disposed of in preferential conditions, and were destined to reimburse investments. The operating result in 2016 was a surplus of 57.8 million pesos, compared to a surplus of 51.7 million pesos in 2015. The operating result of 2016 came from net income in tuition, our main activity; from increases in other income mainly from the raffle and UDLAP Consultores; and from controlling costs and expenditures through administrative efficiency in managing resources. 2017 Budget For the ninth consecutive year, a budget committee – coordinated by the Finance Director and consisting in professors, students, and administrative personnel representing all operational areas of the university – prepared the UDLAP annual budget. After several working sessions, the committee presented its 2017 budget of 1,229 million pesos, with the following assumptions: • Cash flow from operation to defray at least 71 million pesos of investments. • Operation with cost control. • Budget with net “zero” result. The budget was presented to the Administrative Council on November 23, 2016. It was then presented to the Business Council on December 6, 2016, and finally to the Board of Trustees on December 9, 2016 for final approval. It is important to stress that, given the budget’s quality and process, both the Business Council and the Board of Trustees approved without modifications what the Administrative Council proposed.

For this purpose, there are initiatives taken and liaisons established to allow for continuity in the development and training of human resources, and in applying policies and procedures in the activities needed for the constant growth of the institution.

The UDLAP Capital Campaign presented university projects to be supported through donations. Among these is the UNE project, which calls on society and the business sector to provide financial aid for academically outstanding young people. This project helps students to find financial support from a company to enter the institution of their choice. In this period, 88 students benefited from the UNE Program and 38 from UNE Business, which allowed 126 students to receive financial aid from businesses and individuals, totaling 6.3 million pesos. The Program for Academic Rescue to Finish University Studies (PRETEU) is a revolving fund donated by H. Nacional Monte de Piedad in 2010. This program helped 88 students in 2016, an increase of 8 students from 2015, totaling 5.2 million pesos. As of 2016, 71 students have finished their studies with this financial aid.
Transparency and Continuous Improvement As part of the Program for Continuous Improvement, members of the university community participate in activities such as process documentation, improvement projects, and evaluations that provide feedback to measure the performance of different hierarchical levels, as well as satis-

In
2016 the service survey reached its highest results since 2007.
The UDLAP Mailbox, part of the Continuous Improvement Program, allows tracking electronic or paper comments expressed by members of the university community and visitors. In 2016, 558 comments were received, which included complaints, suggestions, and compliments. The feedback received through the surveys and the mailbox has given the university community a culture of continuous improvement to keep providing quality services.

For the second year, vice-presidents were evaluated, and for the first time directors who report to the president were evaluated as well; personnel who report to each of the vice-presidencies and directorships performed the evaluation. This evaluation shows the strengths and areas of opportunity in each group. Over 70% of employees participated, a 16% increase from 2015. The graph shows the comparative distribution of all evaluations in each year, considering only the vice-presidencies, which have data for 2015 and 2016.
Also, the performance evaluation of all administrative and academic personnel continued, based on the definition of their individual goals. This year there was a 14% increase in number of employees participating in this exercise.

Regarding the service evaluation, this exercise has contributed to detect areas of opportunity to improve services that support the academic and administrative areas. In 2016 the university community graded nine services during the Spring period and eleven during the Fall period. The evaluation for Spring was 4.12 and for Fall 4.46, on a scale from 1 to 5. Also, general satisfaction was 8.32 in Spring and 8.96 in Fall, on a scale of 1 to 10. It is important to mention that Fall 2016 had the highest score since 2007.

Technological projects were introduced to reinforce the computing infrastructure, of which the most important are the replacement of 338 computers, with a total investment of 9.1 million pesos, and the updating of software used in the study programs, with an investment of 4.9 million pesos. Likewise, in order to facilitate academic interaction between students and professors using technological tools, 3.5 million pesos were invested to increase the Blackboard Collaborate platform licenses, from two thousand to eight thousand, as well as to acquire the mobile app. The Center for Institutional Data underwent a 16.9 million pesos renovation, which mainly focused on decreasing the amount of time it takes a student to enroll in his/ her classes. And, in a similar way, a “Service Desk Express UDLAP” was established to manage information technology service requests. This service desk should speed up the recording, follow-up, and response to the community’s requests. In 2016 the time to solve technical support requests was reduced by 9% compared to 2015. 1.3 million were invested to update the firewalls for the Center for Institutional Data, in order to protect the information held therein. A process to detect anomalies was implemented, which identifies hacking attempts or viruses by analyzing the usage behavior of the computer network at the university. In 2016, the UDLAP information security system stopped over 600 thousand attacks of a medium and critical level, detected and eliminated 300,000 viruses in equipment connected to the campus network, and

ed directors from top information technology companies, such as Oracle, Dell de México, CISCO, LG Electronics México, Axtel, Adobe, and EMC México, among others. The session’s purpose was to identify technology trends that could be useful for the university from the wide array of existing resources. In this sense, the outreach to the business sector has brought agreements that benefit our students, such as the Oracle Academy-UDLAP agreement and the recognition of the university as a CISCO Academy. The latter updated the Department of Computers, Electronics, and Mechatronics’ network and communications labs that now include vanguard equipment; a collaboration agreement signed with Hewlett Packard Enterprise will allow students to perform activities such as professional practices, social service, training, and even research project development; and the Apple Lab now has an agreement to develop a program for the UDLAP iOS Innovation Center.
Investments UDLAP works to maintain the functionality, aesthetics, and modernity of its environment, including all the elements that make up a university campus. Therefore, the maintenance, remodeling, and renovation plan is followed closely in order to continue innovating, and to use vanguard technologies in all campus facilities and cultural spaces. The following maintenance work was performed: • Renovation of 123 bathrooms on campus, which included changing the furnishings, partitions, extraction equipment, and hydro-sanitary networks. The total investment was 12.6 million pesos in 1,655 m2. Other investments made during the same period were: • Remodeling and furniture renovation in the admissions and school services areas, including flooring, ceilings, lighting, and TV screens. The investment was for $973,000 for a 145 m2 area. • Remodeling of the dance hall and rails for representative teams, installing hardwood floors, special furniture, lighting, and outside work, an investment of $961,000 in 178 m2.
• Furniture for the dressing rooms of the Hacienda dance hall and the Agora, investing $231,000.
• Replacement of 1,718 meters of fencing in the campus perimeter to improve security, with an investment of 2.03 million pesos. • Renovation of equipment in the machine room, with an investment of 2.3 million pesos. • Renovation of the uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS) for electrical backup in the computer rooms for engineering, in order to guarantee continuous electrical supply. The investment was for 1.04 million pesos. • Renovation of the backup equipment in the Center of Information Technology Data with an investment of $294,190. • Construction of a 2.5 km system to channel rainwater, in order to avoid flooding on campus. The investment was $353,484. • Construction of 6 artificial rainwater absorption wells, in order to replenish the area’s aquifers. 4.4 million pesos were invested. • Replacement of obsolete UPS equipment for the UDLAP Lottery telephone call center, with an investment of $566,310.87. • Replacing the electrical boards with commercial equipment in different campus areas, with an investment of $719,200. • Roof waterproofing in 16,886.56 m2 of campus buildings, with an investment of 4.4 million pesos. • Renovation, lighting, and maintenance of the hardwood flooring in the second floor showroom of Capilla del Arte in Puebla, with an investment of $474,577.65.
Library As part of the university’s strategic objectives, we have updated the library collections to improve the quality of the academic and administrative activities.
• Acquisitions of 4,070 new books and renewal of subscribed electronic resources. The yearly investment is over 9 million pesos. • Updating 5,100 records in the Aleph system. As a result of the changes authorized in 2016, there was a negative selection of 4,400 titles in the reference collection that due to their nature are now obsolete. • From the verification of records at the International Monetary Fund, a physical change was made in the printed master’s theses at UDLAP, which are being included in the general collection according to subject. • Relocated 40,000 titles of the literature and linguistics collection in the ground floor. • Temporary loans to exhibit the documentary collection from the Archive and Special Collection Rooms of the Historical Archive of the Mexican Holy Gospel, in order to show them, promote the exchange of works that have historical value, and to back research projects. The exhibitions where the collection was shown were: • “Mexique 1900-1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco et les avant-gardes”, open from October 5, 2016 to January 23, 2017, at the Clemenceau Galleries of the Grand Palais in Paris. The digital version of these newspapers has a search option and query by title, year, and volume. This includes over 300 copies that narrate the everyday life of our university, from its start until its establishment in Cholula. • The website for the digital thesis collection was updated for mobile phones, by designing the specific templates to adjust to different sizes. The Honors Program thesis identification was also included. The UDLAP digital thesis collection is made up of over 4,800 docu-
