An Early Emphasis On Fun Despite the fact that they make their living with horses now, brothers Michael and Sam Pegg are quick to acknowledge that their young life on horseback was all about fun. The brothers started riding ponies at an early age, encouraged by their mother who has a

lifelong passion for horses. She is an accomplished horsewoman who showed Hunters and Jumpers in the 70s, but with the boys she kept the early emphasis on enjoying the ride. While the brothers didn’t have made up ponies or formal training growing up, they’d watch show jumping on TV and ride around imitating their favorite riders. As youngsters they did some local shows for fun, until Michael got serious about competing at age 13.

The brothers are athletic and both boys played every sport possible – hockey, soccer and rugby, to name a few. Clearly proud of his brother, Michael notes “Sam could have been a professional athlete in another sport if he’d chosen something instead of horses.” But Sam quickly adds that he knew he always wanted to be a professional rider.
Going Pro As juniors the pair did not have one full time trainer, but they were good listeners and eager to learn, so many trainers helped them along the way. As a teenager Sam rode in the equitation on a 5-year old thoroughbred-cross mare purchased from an eventing barn. It was Neil
Badcock of Standalone Farms, King City, Ontario who gave 18-year old Sam the opportunity to ride his first sale horse – a jumper that they wanted made into an equitation horse. That bit of good luck started Sam’s professional career. After high school, Michael attended University by day and rode horses by night. He would be sent horses to ride that needed miles, or to be campaigned or even those with behavioral issues. He built jumps, course designed at smaller shows, sold horses and worked towards building a business with equine professional and horse show manager Ken Denouden.
Many Canadians call World Equestrian Center home during our seasonal horse show series. These international athletes and their horses travel from Ontario, Toronto, Montreal and even British April Columbia 2018 to show! 5

Sam garnered valuable experience in producing young horses up through the ranks and in managing a horse for it’s best performance in a real top program. He also learned to turn out a horse for the show ring. During his six years at Kirin Farm, they would be on the road to approximately 30 horse shows per year – which gave him a tremendous amount of show mileage. Hoping to find opportunity and gain experience, Sam traveled to America in his final junior year to ride for California-based Hunter professional, John French. By that time Sam was already starting to be recognized as an up-and-coming young rider, and trainers and others in the industry began to present him with opportunities to ride other horses. At 19, it was Sam’s time to turn professional and he took a position working with Kris Cheyne of Kirin Farm in Kansas City, Missouri where he rode babies all the way up to Grand Prix horses. In fact before Sam went to Kirin Farm, he hadn’t jumped in a 1.25m class and then, over time Kris and Sam built

It Was a Bit of Baptism by Fire... up a business that shifted towards higher jumpers and had some very successful grand prix horses. “It was a bit of baptism by fire,” recalls Sam. “It worked out well because I was able to ride all levels of horses and I ended up learning all of the workings of a proper show stable, like getting client horses prepared and to the ring,” Sam recalled.
Meanwhile Michael had earned his Engineering degree from the University of Toronto. Continuing in business in the Toronto area, the brothers bought and sold horses from Europe and produced young horses at a breeding farm in Ontario. Michael was ready for a change and that coincided with Sam finishing up his six years with Kris and returning to Canada – so they decided to go into business together. That was in 2014. The same year they went to Belgium and ended up buying Shaia de Macheco, a Belgian Warmblood mare (Kannan x Rivage du Poncel) that they saw competing. Shaia’s arrival was the

hen you first meet him, Sam Pegg is quiet and unassuming, but still waters run deep. When asked about his philosophy on horse training, he opens up and shares his thoughts on the ‘big picture’ of creating success. Sam believes that horse selection is paramount. He believes that if you can identify what the horse is best suited for and compete them within their limits, you will vastly improve your odds. To get the most from a horse, Sam insists that they must be a willing and able participant – and this means that they must be truly fit and sound. Sam doesn’t just ride the horses to cross them off the daily list. He takes the time to look at each horse as an individual and to optimistically gauge its potential. He rides them “as he wants them to be, happy and in a position to do their best.” His system of flatwork is designed to strengthen a horse, build its topline and give it the confidence to carry itself. Coupled with proper nutrition, supplements and lots of turnout, a critical component of his program is working alongside his team of vets, farriers, physical therapists, dentists and saddle fitters to ensure that his horses are comfortable and best prepared to train April 2018 8 Photo: and compete. catalyst for formalizing a business relationship with Basheer Khan, an accomplished three-day event rider who had competed and won at the top levels in India. Michael had met Basheer in 2009 when the former eventer had been taking a break from riding and wanted to get back in the saddle, so he’d come to Michael for help. They’d always stayed in touch and Khan had told Michael “if you find a good horse, I’ll partner with you.” With the purchase of Shaia De Macheco, the newly minted business partners formed Ten Sixty Stables. Michael describes Khan as an experienced businessman who has helped the brothers learn how to run and manage a successful business. Although he is a partner, Khan is not involved in the day-today operations of the barn – he has taken more of a strategic role. For example he put the deal together to buy the farm and managed the financing structure so that it worked. Khan rides now for pleasure and his involvement allows Sam and Michael to focus on the things that they are good at. Over time, they developed a client base starting with those who

There are 20 acres of pastures divided into 10 small turn out paddocks and 10 larger paddocks to accommodate the horses regimen at home. haia De Macheco has earned a permanent place at Ten Sixty Stables, because to Sam Pegg, she is more than his Grand Prix partner, she is family. Fondly referred to as Shaia in the barn, the 16-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare (Kannan x Rivage du Poncel) has a velvety dark coat and lovely soft eyes. Despite her diminutive stature, Sam says he has never ridden a horse with as much heart as Shaia. Sam insists that even with top bloodlines, you cannot breed a desire to win. Shaia is living proof of his theory – because every time she goes in the ring, she wants to win. The competitive pair have won a $25,000 Grand Prix, a $7,500 Futures Prix and $5,000 Welcome Stake classes at the World Equestrian Center. In the summer of 2017 Sam and Shaia won the $10,000 New Balance Welcome Stake at the Vermont Summer Festival and on their home turf at Caledon Equestrian Park in Canada, they won all three showcase jumper events in one week including the $10,000 Open Welcome, the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix and the $25,000 Grand Prix. Sam spends most of his time in the saddle, training, preparing and competing the horses. Goals Since founding Ten Sixty Stables, the Pegg brothers have developed a strong team and united their talents to bring several business interests to fruition – training, showing, sales, course designing, horse shows and even quarantine services. They are together in all things and in agreement about their ultimate goals: continue to produce a string of Grand Prix horses, maintain their aspirations while still running a viable business – and for Sam to represent Canada internationally. We have no doubt that with a little luck and listening, great opportunities will continue to present themselves to the talented Pegg brothers.

This year I have two horses stepping up to Grand Prix – FEI level competing and wanted someone who can help me make the step up. Is there a big difference between showing in Canada and the US? I do not think there are a lot of differences between the United States and Canada regarding showing, other than the ribbon colors. I think the equestrian community is so close and in the end our love of our horses and our sport brings us together, as one.

This past October marked my fourth trip to Wilmington, OH, to visit the World Equestrian Center (WEC). Each time I go, I am pleasantly surprised and impressed by the continuous work that goes into making WEC one of the finest showgrounds in the country. I have witnessed first hand that the vision of Roby Roberts– and the exciting plans of the dedicated WEC team – will continue to exceed the equestrian community’s expectations. With the addition of The Sanctuary, an exciting Grand Prix, and an amazing atmosphere, WEC certainly exceeded my expectations, once again, this trip. Photo: Sarah Appel

ROBY ROBERTS
SETS THE TIMELINE FOR THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED OPENING OF THE
WORLD EQUESTRIAN CENTER IN OCALA, FLORIDA by Candace FitzGerald
We had the opportunity to sit down with Roby Roberts to discuss the highly anticipated opening of the new horse show facility. ince 2016, the World Equestrian Center has been shifting the paradigm in equestrian sports. With its welcoming blend of bright, clean, climate-controlled indoor horse show facilities, family friendly atmosphere and amenities galore; the facility has been heralded as a ‘game changer’ for the equestrian industry. Once construction is complete, there will be an additional 90 days of work to finish the landscaping and to test the technology infrastructure. The World Equestrian Center Ocala is being created as more than just a horse show facility – it will be a state of the art, resort style equestrian sports venue that will feature convenient key card technology, digital video live streaming and comprehensive security systems throughout.
In addition to the planned amenities already released, the facility’s sophisticated technology network is under development with systems that will make World Equestrian Center Ocala the most technologically advanced horse show facility in the country. Here’s how it will work - when you arrive, you’ll get a card. You’ll be able to use that card at the hotel, spa, horse show office; at restaurants and stores, even at vendor booths.

Not only are the first letters of each of these words synonymous with the World Equestrian Center, the words themselves aptly represent the founding principles of the Roberts family and their Wilmington, Ohio, event facility. Roby is a life-long horseman. Growing up in Wilmington, Ohio, his Mom’s passion for horses inspired the family to ride and compete with Quarter Horses – Western Performance horses. “Our family owned a Quarter Horse breeding operation and we
competed all the way up to the Quarter Horse Congress. Now my daughter, Sofia, who’s 14, competes in the hunter/jumpers.” In addition to owning and operating R + L Carriers, a global transport and logistics business, the Roberts family owned and operated Roberts Arena for 35 years. “We ran it for decades as ‘The Showplace of the Midwest,’ and it was a destination for American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) shows as well as other breed shows,” shares Roberts. “When my parents

irst developed in 2006, this app has grown into a global app with an online version and 40,000 registered users, delivering an experience that “covers everything you need to track and manage your horses,” said founder and developer, Nancy Winfield. “The app, which is now free, used to be the only app in the barn management space, however we still are the only one that delivers the most features and reliability,” added Winfield. After a riding accident that resulted in a concussion, Winfield, based in Ontario, Canada, finds this app Quality. Class. Distinction.

invaluable because, “the accident affected my memory and this allows me to store all my notes in one location and not worry about what I might have forgotten.”
HorseNotes simple interface features four main categories covering your horses: a calendar, journal, expenses and contacts. As you go deeper, the Horse Health page allows you to find and manage all the key maintenance records and provides integration of graphics for storing receipts and more. “The most popular feature for our users is the Health category which is ideal for the horse owner looking for one central depository for their horse care records,” said Winfield. Increased ventilation offers riders much needed relief during those hot summer days. Conveniences such as removable liners, which can be washed, will keep your helmet like new. While matte finish and microsuede helmets are equally popular, riders will be delighted with the variety of choices and colors available now in popular brands. Protection from the sun has never been more stylish - flattering helmets with wider brims are very popular again this season. The GPA First Lady 2X, Samshield Miss Shield, KASK Star Lady and Charles Owen SP8 are great choices and were front and center at AETA. n the space of a decade, technology has transformed this critical piece of apparel completely. Today’s hunt coats have replaced the once ubiquitous satin lined wool with featherweight washable technical fabrics featuring remarkable stretch and breathability. There is a wide array of color choices and limitless customization options including trim, buttons, piping and bling. Ventilation is a must in warm weather. The unique Alessandro Albanese Motion Lite Show Jacket is designed so a rider can compete in maximum comfort with complete freedom of movement. The Motion Lite fabric is highly breathable and is engineered to be lightweight like a second-skin, while retaining the look of a traditional hunt coat. It is also available in colors as well as a men’s style.

his season’s fantastic array of breeches will allow you to find the perfect breech for just about every occasion, and even a few you might not have thought of yet. Technical breeches constructed of lightweight technical fabrics have begun to take over. Subtle details including colored buttons and a bit of bling are elements being employed to give each breech their own look with incredible fit. While classic styles, such as, The Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunter breech and RJ Classics Gulf are still popular, newer brands continue to gain momentum. For example, For Horses introduced the new Emma breech in their trademark microfiber lightweight technical fabric, high performance knee grip, slim sock bottoms, perfect rise, enhancing cut and fit. The Italian flag button on the leg, horse shaped grippy knee patch, and small sparkle on the logo under the belt loop make this breech subtly stand out. Equiline, always a leader in quality and style, modified the popular Equiline Boston breech by adding X-Grip technology to replace the microfiber patch. While riders love the Equiline Ash breech with the triangle logo on the leg, this new breech gives equitation and hunter riders a grippy option with a more traditional look.
