l etter It's fairly incredible that I'm editing the Texas issue of anything. I'm a California-born and Sooner-bred girl. But after immigrating for college, and not thinking twice about staying after, I consider myself a sworn Texan. It's like John Steinbeck said: "Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word." Where can I apply for citizenship? In this issue, we tried to capture that spirit (starting with Marcie Meredith's incredible cover photo - whoa!) and translate it for you into something magical, inspirational, but most of all relatable. There are so many ways you can show off your state pride in your wedding from the flowers (page 44) to the jewelry (page 15) to the setting (page 16)! It's fitting for the Texas issue to be our first as we expand our coverage to all of West Texas. We're so excited to welcome Amarillo, Midland, Odessa and the surrounding communities into our family! A big, hearty Hi Y'all! to all of our new friends!

RUSTIC redefined++ This ain’t your typical barn wedding. Event stylists Allie and Andie scrapped the burlap, lace and mason jars to build a better barn wedding. They mixed elements of raw wood, metal and shades of white to create a scene of pure elegance and sophistication. Photos by Becca Lea Photography Styled by Andie and Allie

The Vision Event stylists Allison Davis and Andressa Bertaioli, of Andie and Allie, captured the rustic and wild Texas spirit with a freshness and sophistication. Davis and Bertaioli started with three elements for their scene: raw wood, burnished metal, and shades of white. T h e S ett i n g It was love at first sight when we set foot on the family estate of the Fulford Barn (see page 22) in Brownfield, Texas. They envisioned the ceremony taking place among the majestic pecan trees (125 in all!), and the family-style reception dinner inside the gorgeous barn. To construct the altar, they used raw coyote posts to build a 12-foot tepee (bottom right). Instead of fighting the West Texas wind, they used it to their advantage, wrapping the tepee in yards of white chiffon fabric, which billowed and danced in the wind. Shorter coyote posts were used to line the aisle and were strung with jute rope and delicate white flowers. The effect was simply magical. T h e Fas h i o n s Irelecia Edwards, of Irlecia's Bridal Couture, designed a custom gown for the occasion. The full chiffon skirt complimented the fabric of the tepee, while the delicately beaded top played to the elegance of the event. She also created a stunning headpiece to replace the traditional bridal veil. Davis and Bertaioli coordinated the bridesmaids in perfectly mismatched dresses by BCBG exclusive to Drest by Scott Malouf. From left (opposite page) they wear BCBG Joyce beaded silk cocktail dress in vanilla, BCBG Julissa beaded silk cocktail dress in lemongrass and BCBG Lillie strapless dress in champagne. The menswear, also from Drest by Scott Malouf, consisted of a Sand navy suit and Bogosse dress shirt and was accessorized with a Carrot & Gibbs green tie and pocket silk, a Hook + Albert lapel flower, and Magnanni oxford shoes.

No one ever gushed about how tasty the flowers were. 21

T h e R e c ept i o n Davis and Bertaioli created a warm, intimate setting over a long, family-style banquet table. For a luxe richness, they layered stemware in a variety of heights, scalloped white china, gold silverware and glass chargers and salad plates from Festive Occasions. Place settings were complimented with handmade linen runners, simple white blooms and succulent arrangements. The centerpiece of the barn was a handmade rustic chandelier. Davis and Bertaioli hung the metal frame from the barns ceiling, and strung twelve candlelit jars at varying levels just above eye level. T h e T reats The family style table was set with bottles of local Texas wine, including our current favorite, Space Cowboy from Lubbock's D'Vine Wine, available with darling custom labels. For dessert, they skipped the cake and built a pie bar with homemade pies (including 6 mini cherry pies!). Davis and Bertaioli used vintage books in place of stands for the pies and served them out of a wagon from Festive Occasions.

happily ever after starts here. 25

T h e B eg i n n i n g Jarrett and I have been classmates since the third grade. However, it wasn’t until homeroom math in our sophomore year that our friendship began to grow. Two events strengthened our bond and convinced us that God had given us each other. In our senior year in high school, Jarrett was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, went through six months of treatment and return to school more consistently after he went to remission. Then right before we started our freshman year of college, my older brother passed away. Because Jarrett had recently endured a major struggle of his own, he knew how badly I needed a friend. God really spoke to him sticking by my side and not giving up on me. During this time, Jarrett knew he wanted to marry me, but I needed a little more convincing to consider marrying my “best friend.” It didn’t take long. After a few months of dating, I knew there was no one else I would rather spend my entire life. We dated through college and grew a lot during those years.

T h e P ro p o sa l We were celebrating Christmas the Thursday before all of our family celebrations. After dinner we opened the cute little stockings I made for us, but Jarrett made us wait to exchange our other gifts. (Turns out, he was waiting for the sun to set.) My gift was a beautifully wrapped large box with the children’s book “The Big Red Tractor” and a bandanna inside. The bandanna, he explained, was there because the rest of my gift was outside. (Freaking out the whole time, I asked if we could read the book first!) He blindfolded me, led me outside to the middle of the pasture facing away from my small cabin-like house. When he told me I could open my eyes, I turned around to find him down on one knee with the question “Marry me?” spelled out with lights on the side of my house. I froze. He asked me to marry him. I could only say, “uh-huh” (and he still makes fun of me because I never actually said yes!)

T h e Dress When it arrived in the mail, I just about cried! I had visited several places, and decided to check eBay on a whim. There it was. I found “the dress”—custom made to my size specifications—for 50! I knew it had to be too good to be true, but it was worth a shot, so I ordered it. It was not at all what it was supposed to be. Thankfully, my mom knew a dress designer. As it turns out, I ended up with a beautiful vintage-inspired dress made from my mother’s wedding gown and mine.

27

28

The Vision Our wedding was “vintage-inspired.” We didn’t want to do “this” or “that” because it was “proper protocol” or someone wanted us to do it. We did what mattered for us, so it would be special for us. I wanted to feel like my brother was part of our special day, so we got married at my parent’s house. In the backyard, there is a beautiful pond and a prayer/ memorial garden for him at the bottom of it. t h e T ra d i t i o n s I carried a handkerchief with my bouquet that all the Johnston women have carried at their weddings. Hopefully, we started a new family tradition. We had a unity circle instead of candle or sand. All of our family came and tied a strip of fabric together to form a huge circle and symbolize us coming together as a family. The Food We had the most random food; all our favorites! We served quesadillas and bacon-wrapped asparagus per Jarrett’s request and an ice cream bar per my request. Our toast? We had a Coca-Cola toast with glass Coke bottles (we don’t drink). For dessert? We had cupcakes and brownies (neither of us like cake). Instead of a cake, we cut a several-layered brownie covered in cream cheese frosting. The Groom’s cake? Our aunts and grandmothers made special desserts and cookies for the groom’s table. T h e F lo w ers Light pink, ivory, and yellow flowers were integrated throughout the reception. I picked seasonal wildflowers that were in bloom, and we ordered flowers in bulk. My mom, mother-in-law, sister and I made all of the bouquets, corsages, and flowers for the aisle. We just sat around the kitchen table together; it was a lot of fun. t h e S p l urge Chriselda. We are so happy that we splurged on photography, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. She was fantastic to work with and took phenomenal pictures to remember our special day for the rest of our lives. We also adore our wedding video that was done by a friend, Ann O'Brien. It is “wow.” T h e B est A dv i c e Breathe. No matter what happens, no matter what goes wrong, at the end of the day you will be married to your best friend., and you get to spend the rest of your lives together. It is so important to have that friendship to fall back on. You can make each other laugh when you are stressed out or about to cry. And even more importantly make sure you have the same foundational beliefs. Take premarital counseling. Get the tough and awkward stuff out of the way beforehand. Set boundaries that will encourage a strong marriage. T h e Future Jarrett and I are currently living in the Dallas area pursuing our dream jobs, waiting to see where God takes us. We want to buy a house soon and maybe start growing our family in the next few years.

T h e B eg i n n i n g In high school, we saw each other for a year before we ever talked. One day, we sat by each other at a speaker even in Midland College. Orlando finally got the courage to message me on a social media site after that day. We became friends and started dating my senior year in high school.

On Friday, we showed up at the park where a table with beautiful flowers and a nice dinner was set up for us. Right then, I knew it was the day I had been imagining for the last six years. We started taking pictures, and then Shawn got down on one knee and proposed. I was so excited our friend had the whole moment photographed and on video.

T h e P ro p o sa l

We had a little extra time before our party, so we decided to stop by the hotel across the street for a drink. When we got up to the balcony, all of our family and friends were waiting to surprise us in their black and white attire.

A friend of ours asked if she could take pictures of us to build her portfolio. Shawn and I made plans to take pictures one night before a black and white birthday party.

T h e Dress As far as style, I have always known I wanted a mermaid dress. At first, I loved every dress. (I think I was just so excited to have a dress on.) But it wasn’t until I went to the last dress boutique that I found a dress that fit my personality and style. Two of my girlfriends were there, and one strated crying when I came out of the dressing room. That was my first sign that is may be “The One.” Since this was the part of my wedding I have always dreamed about, I didn’t want to make a rushed decision. I went home to think about it. The picture of that dress was the only one I kept going back to on my phone. Ultimately, that made me choose it. t h e Favo r i te M o me n ts There were so many! Seeing my groom cry the second I walked into the chapel.

much love. We were so glad to have such a big support system there to watch us.

t h e T ra d i t i o n s My family is from New Orleans so we did the Second Line dance—a New Orleans tradition —where everyone dances with handkerchiefs during celebratory events.

t h e B est A dv i c e Have fun with it, and do what you like. When talking to wedding planners, I met with a lot of people that tried to get me to add another color to my wedding palette. They were afraid ivory with tan accents would be to stark. I chose my planner because she was willing to fulfill my vision just how I wanted it, and I was so happy with the colors I couldn’t imagine it any other way.

t h e S p l urges My wedding dress is one of those things Shawn and I will remember forever. Also, the number of guests. We really wanted to have all of our closest friends, who have watched us grow together over the years, present at our wedding. The chapel was filled with so

T h e B eg i n n i n g Travis and I met while attending Texas Tech. I was a Kappa Alpha Theta, and we had an upcoming date party. My sorority sister (and one of my best friends) set us up. Literally, when I met Travis, I was a little “head over heels.” A week or so after the party, we realized that we had grown up down the street from each other, and I had known his mom since I was born! Apparently, God just didn’t want us to meet until the time was perfect! T h e pro p o sa l Two years ago, Travis texted me and said that we were going to eat at the Texas Tech Stadium Club for his sister Amanda's birthday. Everything seemed totally normal. We went and picked up Travis's grandma, Bett, and headed to the Tech Club where we met up with Amanda and her boyfriend Kevin. We were just sitting in the bar area having drinks when the waitress brought out a cake. I didn't think anything of it, figuring it was for Amanda! She set it in front of me, and said "We have a surprise for you tonight!" I still had no clue, until I looked at the cake and, written in icing, it said "Marry Me?" I didn't know if I should cry or jump up and down... I was literally shocked! I turned and looked at Travis, who was down on one knee. He asked me to marry him, and I guess at some point I nodded or said "yes!" I then turned around and saw my entire family there, who had been watching the entire engagement. I jumped up and hugged everyone. It was a perfect night. The shock wore off the next morning when I woke up, looked at my hand, and realized that I get to spend the rest of my life with the greatest man I have ever met—and my best friend.

T h e Dress I bought my dress the July after we got engaged—almost 2 years ago! I had seen my “dream dress” in a magazine, and I absolutely knew I HAD to have it! The only place, in Texas, that carried THE dress was at Lulu’s Bridal in Dallas! So my mom, dad, sister, and I made the drive just to try it on. When I was looking through dresses, my sister showed me this gorgeous A-Line, Swarovski crystal dress with this beautiful keyhole back. When I saw it, I completely forgot about the dress I came for. But there was one problem. The only thing Travis cared about regarding my dress was that it was strapless (or as he calls it “shoulderless”). I had tried on 10 or so other dresses, but nothing came close to THIS dress. So there I stood, in this dress that was totally opposite of what I went to buy, that wasn’t strapless, but that felt perfect. My dad texted Travis and said, “So…what if her dress isn’t strapless?” Travis replied, “She’ll look gorgeous in anything.” Almost 2 years after I bought it, I asked Travis after the ceremony if it was worth the wait, and if it was okay that it wasn’t strapless. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “Are you kidding me? You look absolutely gorgeous.” The Food We had a Cocktail Hour. We took pictures after the ceremony, so we served Bloody Mary shrimp shooters and coconut-crusted chicken with a raspberry chipotle sauce. For dinner? We had a buffet with strip loin, parmesan-crusted chicken, cheddar-whipped mashed potatoes, salad, grilled veffies, and jalapenocorn casserole, and cheddar-jalapeno bread. Our cakes were the picture of absolute perfection! Travis graduated from Texas Tech School of Law, so his red velvet cake was topped with the Tech seal. The chocolate cream cheese icing was complimented by 100 chocolate-covered strawberries. I designed my cake after our invitations and my dress, so Marla Felton worked with me to craft a cake to reflect the beautiful scalloped edges of my dress. I had the most stunning and amazing raspberry and buttercream-filled white cake with white chocolate fondant that I have ever seen. t h e favo r i te m o me n ts I loved doing the “first look” around the door. Hearing Travis’ voice calmed my nerves and comforted me. We both loved that moment. My favorite detail was my “something blue” written on the bottom of my shoes. Travis wrote “Always, Forever, Promise” on one shoe, and “I love you – Travis” on the other shoe. Since we started dating, we knew we were going to get married. Every night before we’d leave each other or hang up to go to sleep, one person would say “Always?” The other would respond, “Always.” Then “Forever?” – “Forever.” “Promise?” – “Promise.” It was the perfect “something blue” for me. Funniest moment? Travis hid random things in his coat like a stuffed flower, fake money, and a little Batman (which was an inside joke with my dad!) During the garter toss, I had no idea what he was doing under my dress. Then he’d pull out random stuff! It was absolutely hilarious and such a perfect moment— definitely memorable. I loved it! t h e sp l urge I LOVED the bouquets I bought for the girls and me. They are handmade flowers made from recycled fabric, lace, tulle, and brooches, and they went perfectly with my vintage elegance theme! They looked gorgeous with their dresses and even Jacee, the flower girl, got her own pomander just like our flowers! It's perfect because I'll be able to keep my bouquet forever, and it'll be just as gorgeous 50 years from now as it was on our wedding day! T He f uture We are going on our honeymoon at the beginning of August to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic! Travis takes the Bar Exam at the end of July, so it's the perfect way to celebrate all of his hard work! 37

An open field is almost mandatory for a stunning Texas ceremony or vintage-styled bridal portraits. But mud, grass and dirt can ruin havoc on satin heels. For a chic alternative to cowboy boots, choose ultra-trendy Hunter 'Original Tall' Rain Boots ($140, zappos.com) and run wild.

You don't want to spend your wedding day looking (and smelling) like a seventh grade boy who hasn't yet discovered Axe. But with temperatures topping 100 degrees, it can turn into a sticky situation. Combat underarm sweat with Secret Clinical Strength ($8, drugstores). Apply it the night before for maximum efficacy.

Ok, we get it, you want to rock your sky-high heels down the aisle. To keep your heels from sinking and you from falling over dad, slip on a pair of Solemates ($9.95, DSW). For extra protection, invest in their adorable Emergency S.O.S. kit ($29.95) as protection against any minor catastrophe!

We'll admit we don't have a surefire way of preventing rain on your big day. However, Southern lore dictates that to prevent a downpour, the bride and groom should bury a full bottle of bourbon upside down at their wedding site exactly one month before the ceremony. After the dry ceremony, dig up that bottle and pass it around to moisten things up!

THE BUGS At sundown, be prepared for pesky mosquitoes to come out and feast on your guests' cake-sweetened blood. Keep the bugs at bay without sacrificing atmosphere by dressing up citronella candles and incorporating them into centerpieces. For added natural bug protection, use marigolds in your arrangements.

Wedding tears should come from joy, not dust in your guests' eyes! A sudden dust storm can ruin an outdoor meal, but booking a backup location can be pricey. Instead, rent a wedding tent with removable sides as a backup. If the weather is nice, your guests will adore the shady spot, and if a haboob rolls in, you can easily take cover.

We've already discussed how the brutal Texas heat might affect you (see left), but what about your poor guests? Help them beat the pre-ceremony heat by placing custom Vintage Lace Hand Fans by Weddingstar ($1.78 each, weddingstar.com) at each seat.

After the ceremony, your guests will be dying for a refreshing drink. Help keep drinks cold (and hands dry!) with custom koozies. Need ideas? Try, "to have and to hold, and to keep your drink cold," "the vows are done, now let's have some fun" or "something old, something new, something cool to hold your brew." 41

T h e B eg i n n i n g We actually were next-door neighbors throughout high school, but we didn’t meet until after we graduated when mutual friends introduced us. We clicked instantly. I wish we had a “cool” story, but our love story is simple. We knew we were meant to be together. Too cheesy? T h e pro p o sa l We went on a trip to San Antonio for the weekend. One night on the river walk, he waited until no one else was around and then got down on one knee and popped the question. The proposal was just as perfect as the ring!" T h e Dress Finding my dress wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I really wanted something simple with a little bit of lace and an open back. When I couldn’t find what I was envisioning, I just started trying on “simple” dresses. I found the perfect one shoulder dress and added a sash to it, to give me a little shape. The Vision I wanted a small, outdoor, rustic wedding. My wedding turned out better than I could have ever imagined, thanks to our families!

The food It all looked so delicious and was so beautifully displayed. I actually didn’t get to eat any though! Advice to future brides, take the time to eat!! And the desserts, besides the cake, were all made by my in-laws! t h e S p l urge Photo booth!! It was so much fun, and I got a disk of every picture taken in there. I love looking at them and seeing how much fun everyone had doing it! T h e favo r i te m o me n t For our first dance we played “My Kinda Crazy” by Brantley Gilbert. My husband picked the song, and I absolutely love it. I actually don’t remember what I danced to with my dad, but it was so fun! We started off twostepping to a slow song then it went to an old Elvis song for the jitter bug, which I’ve always done with my dad! t h e f uture We have our second baby due about three weeks after our anniversary! We couldn’t be more excited!

T h e We d d i n g July 21, 2012, in front of 400 guests T h e B eg i n n i n g We met in April 2008, during our junior year in high school when Ernesto moved and started attending my high school. A mutual friend introduced us. We quickly became close and started talking everyday, but he didn’t ask me to be his official “girlfriend” until June 1, 2008. I said “yes,” and we’ve been inseparable ever since. t h e pro p o sa l The proposal was so unexpected and very special to me because all of my family was there. We went on a weekend trip to San Antonio for a concert with my family. On the last day, we planned to take pictures at this new place my sister read about. After breakfast, we planned to meet our family at the Japanese Tea Garden for pictures. It’s funny how clueless I was! I didn’t even think anything about my “now” husband staying behind after breakfast. I guess I was just too hungry! At the garden, there is a little walkway leading to the entrance, which curves to the left. Some of my family was standing there, and my sister was recording us walking up them. (Still, I was completely clueless!) I just figured she was recording because it was our first time there. To my surprise, as I walked up the walkway, Ernesto was there, on his knee, with a little box in his hand! Above him, was a bridge where there was a banner that read "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" Instantly, I started crying and just stood there surprised and in shock for a good 30 seconds before actually running up to him to say “YES!”

T h e Dress I knew what I wanted. I had this idea in my head, and I was determined to find it (or at least something similar). I tried on a few dresses, here and there. I liked them, but I didn’t love them. Browsing in a boutique one day, I sat down to look at the magazines, and there it was, what I had been looking for. Without trying it on or even seeing it in person, I got measured and ordered it. I wasn't even nervous. When the dress arrived, it was just like I expected … perfect! I guess your wedding dress is just like your husband. When you know, you know! T h e F i rst Lo o k s At the church we attend, it’s custom for the groom to look away while the bride walks down the aisle and then have that “first look” as her father gives her away to him. In our case, we had the reception before our actual church ceremony and I didn’t want to wear my “real” dress before the ceremony, so I bought a reception dress. I told my now husband that would be the dress I would be wearing all day, so when I got down the aisle and he turned to look at me, it was a huge surprise for him seeing me in a different dress.

T h e favo r i te m o me n ts Our favorite moment was definitely the church ceremony. Reading the vows to each other and knowing that was the start of our marriage and our life together. My favorite thing about our reception was just being able to share this special day with all of our family. We both have a really big extended family, so it’s rare for everyone to get together often. It was awesome seeing everyone there. T h e M U S IC For our first dance we used "Only You Can Love Me This Way" by Keith Urban. My husband picked it, and I absolutely loved it. For the Father-Daughter dance, we danced to "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw. W h at ’ s n e x t ? Right now we are expecting our first little bundle of joy in August. I can’t wait to start this new chapter in our life as parents.

T H E B E G INNIN G David and I met through a mutual friend, Travis Malone, in late October 2009. David and Travis were teammates on the Texas Tech Football Team, and Travis and I have been friends since high school. A group of friends and I had just arrived at a friend’s house when I realized I needed to use the restroom. I stepped out of the room, rounded the corner and nearly ran straight into a 6”5’ figure blocking my way. Both surprised, we exchanged hellos and instantly fell into conversation.

THE PROPOSAL David invited me to go skiing with his family in Ruidoso, New Mexico, in honor of his parents’ 30th wedding anniversary. Little did I know, he planned the entire trip around the proposal and even flew in my mother and father. David asked if I wanted to see the view from the top of the mountain on our last run. The view from atop the mountain took my breath away; I was with the man of my dreams surrounded by God's Majesty. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee proposing! My eyes filled with tears of joy as David wrapped me in his arms and I said “yes!” The next thing I knew, my mom and dad walked out from behind the lift brimming with tears and excitement.

T H E FAVO R I T E M O M E N T S For both of us, it was walking down the aisle and seeing each other for the first time that day. David and I had a long distance engagement for the final three months. Before our rehearsal dinner, I hadn’t seen him in a month! Also, sharing our first kiss and dance as husband and wife was everything I had hoped for. Dancing in David’s arms as our friends and family watched meant the world to me.

69

T H E T R A DI T ION I incorporated my maternal grandmothers’ handkerchief into my bouquet represented my “something borrowed”. My grandmother received the handkerchief on her wedding day to my grandfather in 1953. We also paid homage to previous marriages in our families by displaying marriages licenses dating back to 1906, and exhibiting our mothers wedding dresses in the foyer as guests entered the reception hall.

T H E FOOD The cocktail hour started off with traditional hors d’oeuvres including hot spinach artichoke dips, cheeses, fruit trays, and freshly made bagel crisps. Shortly after the wedding party arrived, dinner, which consisted of baconwrapped, stuffed chicken medallions, penne pasta with basil pesto cream, Prosciutto wrapped asparagus, and crab cakes, was served. The desserts consisted of a four-tiered cake with varying layers and icings. We also had a German chocolate groom’s cake decorated with chocolate ganache icing and adorned with chocolate covered strawberries.

T H E S P L U RG E The food! We wanted our guests to feel welcome, comfortable and taken care of. Also, with David and his groomsmen being of such large stature, we knew the quickest way to their hearts was through their stomachs!

T H E B E S T A DVIC E Don’t sweat the small stuff! If an aspect of the wedding is different than how you envisioned it, it’s ok! Remember, the focus of this day is about two people beginning their lives together. Everything else that ensues is icing on the cake.

T He V i s i o n Event stylist and floral designer Paula Barnett of Barnett and Co. created a glamorous evening, inspired by the golden age of Texas. "They were more proper in their entertaining—Real linen napkins, bringing out all the Sunday best silver, china and crystal. A refined vintage..." said Barnett. The shoot "floods me with memories of grandmother’s table when she entertained for special occasions." T h e S ett i n g The Ellen Noël Art Museum in Odessa, Texas was the perfect setting for our evening affair. Their Sculpture and Sensory courtyard made a beautiful backdrop for portraits, while the Rodman Auditorium was a cozy indoor location, nestled among their gorgeous galleries. T He ac c e n ts Barnett brought the past to the present with a combination of antique and modern tableware. She set the table with her grandmother's antique Della Robia fruit and flower pattern china and her family heirloom silver. She paired aged champagne Lamour linens with a champagne pink table runner and crisp off white vintage napkins. For gorgeous fall accents, she used chiavari chairs, candle sticks, a tiered stand, beaded cylinder vases and vintage crystal glasses, all in gold. T He f lo ra l s With Barnett's background in floral design, it was a no brainer that the gorgeous arrangements would steal the show. Arrangements were created with blooms of pink Mestre lilies, antique green hydrangeas, Sunny Rebecca alstromeria lilies, Romantic Antique garden roses, orange tulips, yarrow and Mariachi pink lizanthus, as well as Crème de la Crème, Freedom and Isabel roses.

PA RT I : 6 c o st ly m i s c o n c ept i o n s

Choosing your photographer just might be the second most important decision you make in your wedding (the first, of course, being the groom, ladies!). After all, when the vows are vowed and the dances danced, your wedding photos are all you have left from the day. At the same time, choosing a photographer might be one of the most confusing and difficult decisions of the wedding-planning process. Enter Angela Free. She's one of the top photographers in the State and widely recognized as one of the most influential in West Texas. She's teamed up with The Wedding Connection to write a series of articles to help demystify the process of choosing a wedding photographer. First up, she tackles six common misconceptions that you may have about wedding photography!

no.1

I should always consider 3 people. Not necessarily. This tactic is probably responsible for more confusion within the photography industry than any other factor. It’s not like getting three bids from a contractor before renovating your bathroom. Why? Most brides want quality work at a fair price. Simply comparing one rate to another can be very misleading. There isn’t a “standard” for price or work ethic for wedding photographers. Each quote or estimate you get is a reflection of what each photographer is willing to provide. Given that you are buying something that doesn’t exist yet (as opposed to a car that you can test drive, for example) it’s impossible to tell how much effort each photographer puts into their work, and what kind of final products are actually going to be delivered. You can’t “try it out”. You can’t “test drive” it. You can’t even see it!

no.2

I should go with a low price to get the best deal. Think about this for a minute. If you have gone through several consultations with wedding photographers and go with the one that has the lowest price, you’ve just awarded your job to the person who has figured out the CHEAPEST way to get your wedding done! Is that what you really want? One of the most common signs of trouble ahead is someone offering to do work for a low price. Like the age old sayings go: “You get what you pay for!” and “You can’t get something for nothing!” Be extremely careful in choosing your photographer based upon the lowest price. If all things were equal I would tell you to go for it. But things are almost NEVER, EVER equal in the wedding business. The bottom line: NEVER use price alone as the determining factor. Many other things should be taken into consideration as well. Whenever you encounter a low price, some questions should immediately come to mind. Questions like: “Why is this price so low?” “What’s missing here?” and “Has this photographer figured enough into the cost to provide me with the level of service I expect?”

no.3

I can just have a friend or family member take pictures. If you are getting married in a small ceremony at your home or local courthouse then having a friend take some snapshots might be all you need. No question, they might get some good shots – but the key word here is “some.” Typically you will not get all of the many important family groupings, details of the day, and special moments that are so important. Also, if you don’t pay someone to do a job there is no accountability placed on the person helping out. A favor for a friend is just that, a favor. When brides let a friend do their photography they often find that they feel awkward asking to see their images in a timely manner, if at all. There is no room for deadlines, refunds, or requests. A favor is a gift and no one can complain about a gift. You just take what you are given and thank them.

78

no.4

I'll find an up and coming photographer who is trying to build their portfolio to save me money. This might seem like a good idea. But again, do you want to trust the biggest day of your life to someone with little to no experience? While you can find someone who has taken a few college courses and is eager to do this you need to be prepared that some key elements or important “shots” might be missed. Why? While most newcomers can offer artistry they have very little experience in low light situations. Churches or candlelit ceremonies could be a nightmare for someone who has been used to shooting outdoors and at their own pace. Depending on the location of your ceremony, both light and lens range could be serious issues for someone who doesn’t have the right equipment or adequate skill. Sadly, when the wedding is over if you don’t have the pictures you were expecting there is very little anyone can do about it.

work to do by looking through a disc where maybe 10 of every 100 images will be something you use. Then there’s the concern if the images are a high enough resolution that they are usable without looking grainy or distorted.

no.6

As long as I get a wedding album I will be happy. Not necessarily true. If your album doesn’t stand the test of time, then handling it can be more disappointing than not having received one. With the introduction of digital photography, the possibilities seem endless. Some of the digital photo albums on the market have very thin “paper-like” pages. . . . While some printing facilities can produce acceptable imagery in these books, they are the easiest to damage.

no.5

On the other hand, flush mounted albums are very common as well. While this type of album is sturdier and comes with a leather cover, it is still easy to damage. How so? The flush mount album is just what it sounds like. A photo is literally pressed onto a page with a “peel and stick” kind of technology. It's like placing your favorite picture in a frame with no glass.

If you hire someone whose only obligation is to give you a disc of everything they have taken at your wedding, you stand a very good chance of disappointment. I feel like this might be the worst choice a bride can make. There is no accountability of what is on the disc. This photographer has (possibly inadvertently) given you a ton of

Quality album companies have a guarantee on all their products. Quality wedding photographers will utilize these companies. Your album will be your most prized possession after it is all said and done. Make sure it’s craftsmanship is something that will last you for years to come. You can and should have the ability to share this with your grandchildren.

If I can get a disc of my wedding I can build my own album.

Pattie McMillan, owner of two Lubbock-area Curves has a killer three step-plan that will help you shed 1-2 pounds of fat per week before your (or your daughter's!) wedding.

S w eat i n g -fOR THE-

"Exercise is the first component," said McMillan. "While cardio workouts are beneficial, you need strength training to maintain and build muscle as you lose weight. Muscle is what revs your metabolism, so the fat you lose stays off." She recommends a thirty-minute circuit to combine strength and cardio into one effective fat-burning workout.

"The second component is your meal plan. Nutrition is so important. But to be successful ,you need nutrition that’s on your terms," said McMillan. She shared a sample Curves Complete meal plan (below). The plan is a combination of small, protein-packed snacks and easy to prepare meals. But diet and exercise won't get you there by themselves. "The third and most important component is coaching," said McMillan. Each week, you need "to review your success and plan for the next week." We think that's a great idea, whether it's with a Curves Coach, a workout buddy or even your maid of honor!

Be sure to register with at least three stores. Also, check that at least one of them offers online purchases and delivery for out of town guests.

Select items at each store that fall in a low, medium and high price category so that your guests can find something in their range.

COLO R S + S T YL E S

Consider the colors you are using in each room. The patterns of your flatware, serving pieces and dishes and coordinate accordingly. For example, if you have a bold china or everyday pattern, opt for a simple tablecloth.

Avoid loading up on things that you may never use or you may not be interested in. If you are not one for formal dinners, pick out a fun everyday dish and classic pattern for two options.

DO I T TO G E T H E R

This may sound like a no-brainer but you might be surprised how many brides pick out an overly flowery pattern without consulting the groom. It’s also nice to bring the groom to decide what you need and what you already have. Plus it's good practice - if you pass the test of getting through registering together, you can get through many things!

Check your registry often to make sure gifts you have been given are accounted for and also to add things when a registry starts to look low in a price point. This way there is always a good selection on your registries.

A LT E R N AT E O P T ION S

If you are getting married later in life and both already have most of the essentials, think about registering for some other items like a grill, a video camera, camping equipment, etc. These would all be fun things your guests would love to contribute to!

S H A R IN G YO U R R E G I S T R Y

It's bad form to include your registry selections on your wedding invitation. A better solution: make a wedding website where guests can find the information or ask your mother and maid of honor to spread the word. For a bridal shower, however, it's fair game to put your selections on the invitation!

S AY T H A NK YO U

While you technically have a year to send your thank you notes, sending them within two weeks of receiving your gift keeps you from getting behind and overwhelmed! Make the thank yous more fun with custom stationary that matches your invitations.

C A N I A S K FO R COLD, HARD CASH?

Kind of. It's still inappropriate to ask for cash outright, but feel free to request donations to a charity, funding for a project of your own or items on a honeymoon registry. Ourwishingwell.com is a great tool for monetary requests. Still, register at least one retailer for your more old-fashioned (and low-tech) guests!

H A P p i ly

e v er a f ter

I can remember it clearly. It was a nice fall Saturday in September, and a friend in my dorm asked if I wanted to go to the game with she and her friend from high school. Apparently, she asked most of the hall, as there were eight girls and one guy, Michael. We went to the game, and I ended up sitting next to Michael. I remember thinking something big was beginning. I also remember looking down at his hands during the football game and hearing “those are your husband’s hands.” After only meeting him two hours before, that was quite a bit of information to process. And for those of you who wonder, I did not share that piece of information until three years later, after he proposed. And just like that, our story began.

Don't you just love Mike and Gabi on their wedding day more than 20 years ago?

Michael was an Aggie, and I was at Baylor, so after determining we wanted to pursue this relationship, we drove Highway 6 when we had the chance to see one another. Over the four years we dated, we sent many letters (yes, snail mail) and now these are treasures we have saved. We spent countless hours on the phone and had phone bills to prove it (pre-cell phone days). We made the most of our “in-person” time, learning to twostep, listening to music, exploring museums and taking in plays. We dated for four years before we were married and during that time we were able to grow and learn many things about our relationship. We are grateful for our time in two different cities as we dated. It required us to learn to communicate well in order to make our relationship work. After all Baylor and Texas A&M are 90 miles away and we could not see each other every day. Upon graduation from college we were married and Michael entered the Navy. Our communication efforts were further reinforced. Email became our primary means of communication while he was out at sea. Now that Michael is out of the Navy, quality communication with each other is

essential. After many years of marriage and three children later, communication is vital to making our marriage healthy and fun! This kind of communication cannot occur through little snippets of texting or Instagram or status updates on Facebook. It can only occur through face-to-face time with each spouse making it a top priority. Being married for over 20 years now, we both realize that good communication with each other is essential to a marriage that flourishes under God’s guidance and direction. Revealing your hopes and dreams, talking about your day, discussing your feelings and sharing your faith will all contribute to a happy satisfied marriage. Take time today to talk together about how well you are communicating. You are beginning your story that is meant to last a lifetime. It’s a story well worth writing. Mike and Gabi Keenum are the creators of Marriage by Design, a faith-based premarital counseling series. They have been married for nearly 20 years and live in Lubbock, Texas with their three children.
