THE VALENTINE’’” SPECIAL -AN EXPLOSION OF RED AND PINKSDid you know more couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day than on any other day of the year? There is something about this romantic holiday which makes men want to propose, and women want to say “yes”. Or vice-versa! Our photo shoot revolves around the design trend ‘ombre’, meaning the gradation in colour from one tone to another. The various shades of reds and pinks reflect the theme.

OMBRE-tastic!
Wedding colour schemes usually focus on one or two colours, but with ‘ombre’ styling, the idea is to have a palette of colours which blend together in soft shades like the pinks, red, fuschia and wine tones which were used here. Our stylist Elaine came up with this beautiful set-up, and completely transformed the conservatory at Castello Zammitello together with florist Joseph Baldacchino who painstakingly decorated the chandelier with fresh flowers, ribbons and strings of crystals. The chandelier WD | 20
further echo the ombre used elsewhere, as do the beautifully crafted cupcakes. The main focus of the decor is an ombre flower centrepiece. Chalkboard hearts are used for place cards, and felt hearts are strewn on the table. The green countryside at Dwejra provided the perfect backdrop for our young couple as they flirted and joked with each other, and the whole atmosphere was perfectly captured by photographer Jessica Moritz.
Our young petite model, Bettina Pace, courtesy of models.com.mt, was perfect for this short, modern wedding dress. The tall, handsome male model is Lauren Lee Pavia. Red shoes for both the bride and groom tie in with the colour scheme and give them a fun, funky style. Converse shoes give him a modern edge and peep toe pumps with a killer heel give her slim legs more length. For an even more modern groom, heart appliques are used instead of a boutonniere.

A Magical Night
Claire Camilleri & Lloyd Zarb
WEDDINGDAY: 30 July 2011
Imagine a wedding with fairytale lights sparkling everywhere, and carefully designed and strategically placed lighting which enhances your venue so that your reception becomes more of an ‘event’ rather than just another reception. Imagine having lighting specialists taking care of this job with the same care and attention with which they devote to major national productions. Claire and Lloyd decided to use Nexos for their wedding reception because they knew they wanted that something ‘different’ which would turn their reception into an amazing magical night. But let’s rewind back to how these two first met… Paceville is not always the most ideal place to meet your soul mate, but once in a while the nightclub scene does provide a setting for love. Claire was on a girls’ night out in Paceville when one of her girlfriends happened to introduce her to Lloyd and a couple of friends he was with at the time. They have been together ever since.
WD | 28
The proposal came when Lloyd surprised her with a holiday to Paris, “I guess the romantic city set the mood”, she says with a smile at the wonderful memory. Deciding on the venue was easy, “It was obvious that if we ever were going to get married it was going to be at my parents’ house”, Claire says.
Claire wanted a classically elegant theme of white and gold and here the florist did an excellent job. For her wedding dress, Claire explains that she had always wanted a mermaid style dress with lace. But the idea of lace was dropped as she started trying on dresses. “I was debating between two dresses and the moment that
Mum asked me ‘which dress do you think Lloyd would prefer?’ It took me less than a second to decide… it was a plain heart-shaped strapless mermaid style dress made of silk taffeta. I still wanted a touch of lace so I made sure that my long veil had lace trimmings.” Her Fendi shoes were purchased from Selfridges in London.
WE LOVE!
a simple silk taffeta mermaid gown matched with a Spanish lace veil for that extra GLAMOUR!
The bridesmaids wore simple yet stunning dresses made of pale gold fabric with touches of white. Each bridesmaid had a different unique bodice which suited her figure. All heads swivelled in the square in Mdina when Claire appeared on the arm of her proud father who walked her down the aisle. The ushers wore perfectly fitting dark suits thanks to the advice and large selection available from Joseph Cefai, who is probably the person in Malta and Gozo when it comes to suits and tuxedos for formal occasions. The men arrived in a limo, and looked very handsome and suave as they walked down the streets of Mdina to the church. As for the groom’s suit, Claire recollects this with a smile. “I can assure you that it was more complicated than buying a bride’s wedding dress. Then we happened to be on a holiday in London and ran across Dolce & Gabbana at Sloane Street”.
WD | 32
“The support we received from our family, friends and everyone who was in some way involved, made us feel so much at ease… so we could enjoy every minute of it. “
The Mdina Cathedral where the ceremony took place was glorious, adorned with white and ivory roses, nestled in green leaves, which were also used in the bouquets of the bride and her bridal party. The piece de resistance, however, was in the lighting at the venue. Lighting specialists Nexos created a wonderful display starting from the long driveway to the trees which were wrapped in fairy lights. The house was lit with just the right amount of colour, and a long custom-made carpet created a path for the bride and groom to make their grand entrance.

The floral arrangements, small, potted plants and candles gave the house a perfect, magical atmosphere on this balmy summer evening. Claire was quite an unfussy bride when it came to the catering. “We didn’t have any special requests apart from the cake. From the day we set a date I started buying bridal magazines. The first magazine we bought, I saw this simple wedding cake and I fell in love with it.” Guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly as the band played nostalgic tunes from the 60s and 80s.

Colourful Celebration Louise Whitley & Matt Watson
WEDDINGDAY: 28 May 2011
Couples can, and often do, meet under the most unexpected of circumstances. For British couple Louise and Matt, the chance meeting was at a bar in London. “We were both there to see a band - I had lost my handbag and he helped me find it.” Matt made sure that the proposal was filled with romance, when he took Louise to Venice and he proposed on a gondola just by the house of Casanova. The decision to get married in Malta was always on the cards, even though there was a change of plans. “We were originally going to get married at a family friend’s garden in St Julian’s but that fell through in the November before the wedding. So we flew out to Malta as soon as we found out for an ‘emergency’ weekend to find somewhere else. My sister who lives in Malta asked friends for recommendations and I looked on the internet at www. theweddingsite.com and went through local wedding magazines. We found our venue which had both a great outdoors space as well as an indoors area just in case it rained, as it can do in May.”
WD | 36
As many brides do, Louise decided on what she wanted for her wedding by creating a scrapbook of ideas which she liked. “I went through lots wedding magazines from UK, USA and Malta. I then started creating a scrap book of everything I liked the look of and a theme ‘emerged’. At the time ‘pale and interesting, English country
vintage’ was very in vogue but I rebelled. I decided that getting married in the Med I wanted something bright and exciting. I then used my scrap book to show all of my suppliers what I liked and wanted. Matt used to tease me about my cutting up of wedding magazine and the amount of Pritt stick glue I got through but he had to eat his words when it proved so
useful.” For her wedding dress, Louise’s wanted something “simple and floaty, nothing too fussy.” Unfortunately, she bought the dress immediately after she got engaged, and by the time the wedding was approaching, she had put on weight and it no longer fit her. “I then had to go on an exercise and diet mission to
get back in shape. That’s a lesson to other brides – don’t leave it as long as me between the engagement and wedding day especially if you get over excited and buy a dress straight away!” Her hair was styled at Mr James International at the Golden Vivaldi Tulip Hotel; her long hair was swept back in an elegant and intricate
chignon with a few delicate tendrils to prevent it from looking too severe. A pretty headband gave the finishing touches to this hairstyle. When it came to her suppliers, Louise based her decisions not just on price but on who she felt most comfortable with, who shared her ‘vision’ and who she could trust to keep things on track
when she wasn’t actually on the island to chase. Her florist, Lisa from ‘floralart’ created gorgeous, eye-catching bouquets of orange, shocking pink and vivid green for the bride, tables and the aisle. “It wasn’t just the wedding day it was the whole four day experience of having all our closest friends and family in one place together on holiday and having fun with us.”

Louise and Matt’s wedding weekend became a holiday for a lot of their guests, who numbered over 100 people. “I wanted to make it worthwhile for people to fly out. We created our own website for guests with lots of information about Malta, suggested hotels, timelines for the weekend, Q&A page to make it as easy as possible for people to organise their holiday for our wedding. Louise was adamant that she wanted it to be a fun, light-hearted wedding and this was reflected in the choice of music and the atmosphere which was created. Tunin’ Entertainment provided one of their exclusive bands, Luca Xuereb and his musicians who played background music during the meal and then upbeat music for everyone to dance the night away. The guests were transported to the wedding venue in traditional Maltese buses which were decorated with homemade pom poms. When they saw the venue, their jaws dropped. The set-up was also designed by Tunin’ who not only created the beautiful lighting with the bridal colours, but provided the Bedouin tents which were white with touches of pink and orange to once again complement the colour scheme. “I arrived in a pink mini moke to the tune of Highway to the Danger Zone (as the guests waited they had on I’m so Excited); followed by Here we go Looby Lou (a nickname I get called) as we got out of the car; and then as we walked down the aisle it was to Madonna’s True Blue. We asked people to make up their own readings and my
aunt made up a fabulous comical poem about us both. My brother-in-law created a wish book for us signed by our guests and he read out some of the comments with help from my niece. My other niece sang Santa Lucia which is a song about a Mediterranean boat following a light home. We walked back down the aisle to Sex is on Fire by Kings of Leon.” As her Dad had sadly passed away when she was younger, Louise was given away by her sister’s former boyfriend who had become a really important big brother figure for her while growing up. The children at the wedding enjoyed it thoroughly because they got to ride around in the mini moke which provided hours of entertainment. They also got to dress up in costumes for the ‘home made’ wedding photo booth. This wedding was fun, fun, fun all the way.

“Our first dance started off slowly by the band, but we had chosen Black Eyed Peas – Tonight’s going to be a good night so all the bridesmaids and ushers (who had been prompted beforehand) started singing as soon as it went loud. And I did jump into the waterfall at the end of the evening - this was not premeditated but due to a little too much drink and excitement.... it made for some good photos though.” As a final touch the couple prepared a power point presentation, thanks once again to Tunin’, which was projected over the walls with photos of the couple and every single guest at the wedding. The thoughtful touches continued until after the wedding when they hired a beautiful Turkish gullet boat with the aim of going to the Blue Lagoon for the afternoon – unfortunately it was a bit rough for some of the more hungover guests so they got as far as St Paul’s where it was lovely and calm. “We spent the time swimming off the boat and then it took us back via a sunset cruise around Valletta harbour where the leftover beer and wine from the wedding came into its own. It was a fabulous end to an amazing few days.”

Turquoise and Peacock Feathers Daniela Caruana and Jonathan Vella
WEDDINGDAY: 13 August 2011
Daniela had just come out of a steady relationship and was certainly not looking for another one, but was determined to enjoy being single for a while. Jonathan (known as Ganni), being a year younger, was also keen on enjoying his single life. “However destiny had other plans for us,” says Daniela. “On the same night Jonathan and his friends had tickets for an event, but decided not to go as one of them was feeling unwell. They ended up coming to Paceville instead and that’s where we met.” There were several coincidences. Both were following a degree in nursing but were in different years and they discovered that they had lived on the same block all our lives, just a few
metres away from each other, but had never seen each other before. They quickly realised that they we were made for each other with marriage being the next natural step. Choosing the right dress is always a defining moment for any bride. ”I always wanted a fish tail, lace dress with a very long veil. I wasn’t sure at first about this particular dress, but the minute I put it on, I knew it was the right one. My Mum and my mother-inlaw both agreed, and that was it. The dress was made of French lace, and was very romantic and elegant with a modern twist.” Ganni’s well-cut suit came from Joseph Cefai, who has many years of experience in helping grooms find just the right fit for their physique.
An August wedding almost demands that you use a venue with a large pool, to make the most of the lovely ambiance of a Maltese summer night. Daniela had always liked the idea of having a themed wedding. “I was browsing through the wedding blogs and saw a bouquet that caught my attention which turned out to have peacock feathers. I decided to incorporate peacock feathers in my wedding, as their colours are both regal and summery, and I felt that locally such a theme is still quite ‘daring’. Everything included peacock feathers, from the girls’ bouquets and headpieces and males’ buttonholes, to the souvenir and gift bags, to the reception decor, the wedding stationary, and guest book pens. I tried to incorporate the feathers everywhere so that the idea would become a theme.” The bridesmaids’ flowers were a mixture of pinks to create contrast.”
CONTRAST! Don’t be afraid of strong contrast. Pink & aqua make a gorgeous MATCH!
Mass was held at the magnificent Mdina Cathedral with Father John Vella, a family friend, celebrating Mass. “On the day we were both calm, as the preparations leading to the day paid off. I always dreamt of walking down the isle with both my parents, so that is what I did, hiring a 1.5 metre wide red carpet. As a souvenir for those who attended Mass we gave out white handheld fans with our names and wedding date written on the sides. During Mass we read a prayer that we had written ourselves, thanking God, and all our relatives and friends. It was very personal and everyone commented on how special it was. On leaving the church, guests were given an organza bag containing a bubble blower and a small packet of ‘love hearts’ with the message “blow new wishes at the new Mr. and Mrs.’ The love hearts were wrapped with personalised wrappers. Meanwhile a large ‘just married’ balloon containing a lot of small helium-filled balloons was prepared outside the cathedral. “As we emerged from the church we burst it and needless to say it was a big hit.
WD | 50
“I arrived a bit early so the driver had to drive around the silent city until it was time for Mass. This was an unplanned but special moment as tourists jokingly asked me whether I was having second thoughts, and mothers asked their children to wave to the princess.”
One of the moments that will be in our memories forever is our first dance as husband and wife, which was choreographed for us. We had never been to dance lessons before, but it was always my dream, and after some resistance, my fiance accepted. During the dance the guests were cheering and clapping and it didn’t feel staged at all; we simply enjoyed dancing together.” Choosing the cake proved to be a bit more difficult, as Daniela wanted it to be traditional and at the same time include peacock feathers. The caterer asked for a swatch sample of the bridesmaid’s material, and found matching ribbon for the cake. The florist made it even more outstanding by adorning it with peacock feathers. There was a sentimental, but profoundly meaningful touch as well: “On each side of the cake we put a wedding photo of both our sets of parents, to honour the fact that their marriages are still going strong.” The champagne glasses and knife set were engraved with the couple’s names and wedding date, and were adorned with peacock feathers The going away was another beautiful moment, as the guests waved goodbye with extra large sparklers, and their car awaited them with an oversized ‘just married’ balloon.

Pearls and Lace
William Dempsey and Stephanie Sciberras
WEDDINGDAY: 20 August 2011
Stephanie’s parents own a restaurant in Ramla bay so when William attended a friend’s bachelor’s party there, she ended up serving them. As she tells the story, it is clear that William was nothing if not persistent. “As I was bringing food to the table, Will asked me for my number in front of his friends. I honestly thought he was trying to make fun of me or he was trying to act cool or something. I was shy, I said nothing and for the rest of the evening, I asked the other waitresses to serve them. Before they left, Will came to me and asked me to meet afterwards for a drink.
WD | 54
I came up with the excuse that I worked late. Just a few minutes after they all left, I received a text message. It was him! During the meal, he had texted a friend and this friend texted another friend and that’s how he got my number. He kept on texting me for the next few days. Then we met by chance at La Grotta, he offered me a drink and we spent that evening together. And that was the beginning!” As the relationship became more serious, the idea of getting married came up naturally during several conversations. However, it was during a
holiday in New York, that they agreed “to seal the deal”. “When we came back we shared the news with our families and immediately started making the bookings.” For their venue they chose Ta’ Frenc, Gozo where William’s sister also had her wedding reception. “We chose this venue that we knew we wanted, because the food is excellent, the service is great and above all there is a warm atmosphere.”
Stephanie chose pearls, her favourite type of jewel, as her theme. “They featured in almost everything: in my dress, my jewellery, my tiara, my shoes, my garter, my nails, in the bridesmaids’ dresses, their jewellery, their hair bands, the cake topper, the invitations, the souvenirs and the guest book. On the guests’ tables, we put some pearl bead-shaped hearts. Since the wedding was in the evening, there was a touch of silver in everything.” Her mother suggested that instead of one colour theme for the bridesmaids, she should chose six different pastel colours. “I had six bridesmaids and a little flower girl so their knee length dresses were light pink, light green, light lilac, light blue, little yellow and light peach. The little flower girl’s dress was the same colour as mine. They looked so beautiful when they were all together.” Stephanie had always dreamt of an original gown, made especially for her by a dressmaker and she always imagined herself wearing a French lace wedding dress. “I went to several bridal shops and tried on quite a few lace gowns. But my wish was to get it handmade and I wanted real French lace. I went with my Mum to choose the material which also included pearls and beads. We designed it ourselves. I like simple styles and wanted my wedding gown to be simple but elegant with beautiful material.. The dress had an A-line fit with a one shoulder frill and a piece of organza flowing from under the bust. The tail was rather wide. I went crazy when I saw it completely finished.”
Stephanie got a classic case of nerves the day before the wedding and was not feeling well at all. “I couldn’t believe that our big day was just around the corner.. I felt as if I was in a dream. I spent half the night cuddled up between my two sisters and planned on spending the rest of it between my Mum and Dad. I got so emotional that I couldn’t go and decided to sleep in my own bed. I woke up the next morning feeling like the day before so my Dad phoned the doctor and he gave me some sachets. Then the bridesmaids and I went to the hairdresser to get our hair done; I was the last one to be ready. When I went home and saw the bridesmaids with their make up on, and saw my wedding dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses, suddenly that moment of confusion was gone. I felt like I had woken up from the dream I was in. Suddenly, I was filled with joy, happiness and excitement and I couldn’t wait to get to church to see my future husband. I’m always late wherever I go, but I was finished early on our wedding day. I was ready to get married! I wasn’t feeling bad anymore. I was so happy that the wonderful feelings I felt brought tears to my eyes. And there William was, all in white, in an elegant suit from Cefai Formal Wear, waiting for me with that big smile on his face, the same smile which makes me forget all my troubles. We tried to enjoy every minute of our day. We were surrounded by our dearest families, relatives and special friends. Another special, unforgettable moment was our first dance. It brings back so many good memories.”
“There are no words to explain how I felt when we were exchanging vows. It was such a special moment.”

BRIDAL PARTY! Include your family and friends in your photo shoot and make sure it’s one big PARTY!
A French Theme
Maureen Cauchi & George Saguna
WEDDINGDAY: 3 October 2009
Maureen had a crush on George for a couple of years before they actually spoke. By that time she was running a shop where he used to go to buy photography magazines. One day he asked for a particular copy of a magazine to be changed because it was damaged, then came a Facebook friendship request and the rest is history. George proposed on top of the Eiffel Tower seven months into the relationship. She thought he was joking, until he wrote his proposal in permanent marker on the tower’s railing. Maureen had never thought about wedding dresses so she didn’t know what she wanted, except that it had to be comfortable. “The first bridal magazine I looked at had a photo shoot featuring Greek goddess-style gowns. I loved the very first one I saw and although I did try a few others, just to please my sister and my mother, the dress which was The One was the very first one I had tried on. There was no doubt about that.”
WD | 62
The couple got married at the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception in Qala because it is a special place for George’s family. Mass was followed by a seated dinner at an outdoor venue under a tent. The autumn weather was perfect and they were very lucky that it was still quite warm. “We chose the place because we wanted to be surrounded by nature. We also had caterers who fully understood our requests: a French themed dinner and absolutely no fish. They immediately agreed to our request for a croquembouche (a traditional French cake made out of profiteroles), unlike other caterers we had approached. We wanted to stick to the French theme as much as possible because France, especially Paris, holds a special place in our hearts. The service was impeccable and dealing with the manager made everything seem easier. No request was too weird or too much work for him and his team.”
“The most special thing was the presence of our daughter. It was as much her day as it was ours and we made sure she felt special like a bride would. In fact, she refers to that day as her wedding day too!”
FAMILY! If you have kids make them part of your special DAY!
George and Maureen had specific ideas about how they wanted their wedding, and the most important aspect of all was that they wanted informality. And they did it all themselves, with George setting up the lanterns that very same morning! “We had a lounge area with large cushions and low tables where the real party started after the dinner. Our original wish was to have the whole wedding in a field or on a lawn but it proved impossible on our island so we tried to get nature to the venue, with plants and trees surrounding the lounge area.” “Many people commented on our invitations, which we created ourselves. We took some pre-wedding photos and made a slide show using them. We recreated our story using those photos because we wanted our guests, especially our respective families, to know more about us as a couple since we had not been together for that long. We also thought it would be a nice keepsake for us and our closest friends and family. We also had a designer create a whimsical illustration for the DVD sleeve.”

Get in Shape For Your Wedding Mark Abela, a personal fitness trainer, has some tips for you so that you can walk down the aisle in your dream wedding dress, feeling confident and comfortable. Start planning your fitness routine about a year in advance in order to lose weight slowly and ensure that you keep it off. If you don’t have that much time, allow for at least 6 months. Always work with a qualified personal trainer. Do not try any crash diets. Apart from being detrimental to your health, they can only cause you to have even more cravings, leading to binge eating (when you stuff yourself with food and cannot stop). Limit portion control. If there is one method which is sure to help you in controlling your over-eating it is smaller portions. One way of doing this is by using a small side plate for your meals rather than a large plate. A large plate means you will give yourself a larger portion.

the long-term. Apart from that, exercise is guaranteed to lift your mood, especially when you are facing the stress of planning a wedding. Team up with an exercise buddy. We all make excuses when it’s too cold (or too hot) to exercise, so one way of ensuring that you keep going is to start doing some kind of exercise with a friend. Whether it’s walking, running, playing tennis or going to the gym, make it a social outing and you will have more chances of maintaining the routine. Remember, physical exercise is the best tonic for mind, body and soul! Choose an exercise regime you enjoy because that way you will stick with it. Try different sports/activities until you find one which you like. When you find yourself looking forward to the lesson or the training then you will know you have found something which works for you. It’s good that you want to lose weight for your appearance as well as your health. However do not obsess or set yourself impossible goals. Take it gradually, listen to your personal trainer’s advice and always be ready to accept how your body responds. Don’t get frustrated and be patient. From my experience I can tell you that, if you do it properly, weight loss is possible!

British Vintage in the Heart of Valletta Josanne Cassar learns all about WeddingBells’ makeover from Marquita Kemper Marquita has been successfully running WeddingBells shop in Valletta for the last 15 years. Over the years, its popularity with brides who rely on her patience and sound advice to find the dress has grown, but having a wide selection of amazing gowns was not enough for her. Marquita knew that the time had come to undertake some much needed refurbishment. “I have always had a penchant for the ‘English’ look, and I wanted to bring that vintage English feel to the shop because I believe it gives it a very homey atmosphere. Now, anyone who comes to see dresses feels nice and cozy, physically and psychologically.” The shop is a bride-to-be’s dream of what a bridal shop should look like. It is feminine and yet not excessively so, striking just the right balance so that even the most hesitant bride does not feel overwhelmed or intimidated. There are hues of white and cream and ivory everywhere you look, with delicate, thoughtful little touches such as a wrought iron umbrella stand, books on vintage weddings and ornate frames in which photos of long ago brides can be seen. Every time you go into this shop you discover something delightful. For example, two tiny showcases are encased underneath the stairwell, lit up with careful lighting and displaying beautiful bridal jewellery and headpieces.

The long white wardrobes with drawers which run the length of the shop have simple black handles, while a heavy curtain can be drawn at one end so that the bride can try on her dress in privacy and comfort surrounded by full length mirrors. The ideas for the decor had been brewing in Marquita’s mind for a long time, so when she finally took the plunge it took only four weeks for the refurbishment to be complete, thanks to a designer and a carpenter who understood how to take her vision and make it work. Her brother took care of the technical aspect of the lighting. “Even when I’m travelling I always pop in to take a look at bridal shops – this is not just a job, it’s my passion! I don’t jot a note or anything, but I think I had been compiling mental lists of what I wanted all along.”
Her pride and joy is the marble slab at the entrance to the shop which she had embossed with the WeddingBells logo. Even though it was more complicated than she had imagined, this was something which she had her heart set on, and she kept insisting that it had to be done just right. She admits that she wanted it mostly for sentimental reasons. “As a child, I remember the well-established shops all had that slab at their entrance, and it was something that had stuck in my mind. It was quite a process, and in fact the whole shop had been tiled and that slab was missing for quite a while before it was finished!” The champagne-coloured chandeliers are simply exquisite; reminiscent of the type you would find in an old house but on a smaller scale. They were ordered through a shop in Malta which is run by a British couple. Marquita continues to think up additional details – she has now ordered white wooden hangers with the logo embossed on them, for all the dresses. Because she loves what she does, she never tires
of looking for new ideas and accessories for her clients. The wedding parasols, for example, are purchased from a specialised company in Scotland. There are dainty earrings on display and beautiful shoes as well. As for the numerous different styles of wedding dresses, well, that would need a whole other article. In fact, the motto at WeddingBells can be best summed up by the lettering on the wall...any bride who comes here to try on dresses will surely feel like “A princess for a day”.

DIARY OF A BRIDE
After 62 dresses,
“Buying my wedding dress was one of the biggest headaches ever, but after trying on about 62 dresses I finally found the ONE! Well, maybe I did not actually try on that many, but it sure felt like it...
I finally found THE ONE
I didn’t think it would be this hard. Like many brides, I had leafed through countless magazines so I had an idea of my dream gown and I was sure I knew the style I wanted. When I finally saw a picture of the gown I liked, I cut it out and took it with me everywhere I went, folding and unfolding it, showing it to salesgirls, until it became worn out and crinkly. But even though I went to every shop on the island, I couldn’t find anything like it...no shop had this dress! I tried every shape, size and fabric you can image...I was in and out of these dresses like a maniac. One day I had four different appointments and let me tell you, you end up as exhausted as if you had just run a marathon. The more I tried on, the more confused I became. When I put on one particular dress I truly felt like a princess, but I took one good look at myself in the mirror and was brutally honest with my reflection, “hey, you’re not 20 years old any more, you really cannot carry this off!” At other times the dress was much too plain. I tried on a lace dress and my Dad kindly told me I looked like a tablecloth.
Oh, that’s another thing. Opinions. If you do not want too many of them flying around I would suggest you limit the number of people you take with you for advice. At first I went round went my sister and both my parents. ‘You look fat’, ‘that looks like a nightgown’, ‘that skirt is too huge’. I now understand why so many brides end up crying in frustration when they cannot find the right dress. Fitted dresses, ballgown dresses, fishtail shape, A-line, you name it, I tried it. By the end of three days I was miserable and I still did not have a dress. I found that the attitude at the shops also affected me. At one shop I was treated like a queen, and at the next one I was treated very coldly by a salesgirl who was very unfriendly. Shouldn’t people who are trying to sell something to a happy bride at least have a smile on their face? Then, we had one more shop left. It was my sister who insisted I try on this particular dress, and I shook my head, thinking it really was not me. I reluctantly tried it on, and to my surprise, for the first time I truly felt like a bride. All along I was wondering when I was going to start feeling that ‘butterfly’ moment women always describe when they find the right dress. I felt great in many dresses but there was no real emotion. Now, suddenly I felt it. The finishing touch was when I wore the veil - that was it! I mean, a dress is a dress, but it’s when you’re wearing a bridal veil that it really hits you that you’re going to get married. The funny things is that everyone had told me I would end up buying something I didn’t think I would buy and I told them that’s impossible; I know what I like! And yet I was shocked at myself because that is exactly what happened. My advice is to go for something which is timeless, which you would wear 50 years from now...perhaps for your anniversary. Stay tuned for more of my bridal adventures in the next issue... MIA
