For this edition of wedding planner photo-shoot, Jasondavids decided on a tablescape with array of blinks in different dimensions. The floral table runner is such a piece to behold. This is a display of “all some - onesome, two-some, three-some pieces to create a magical feel. A luscious table setting

This is a display of our heritage in Nigeria. Here Jasondavids used cultural and traditional items in show casing how rich our heritage is. Ethinic groups such as Hausa, Yoruba and Ibo are lavishly represented with a touch of modernization. One of the primary roles of a woman is to maintain the home front. Here a maiden is serving her Lord some fruits. Our cultures are rich and these can be seen in the inspired idea represented above. Wooden accessories used here speak for themselves. Going back to the basics, this is. Indeed, it’s an infusion of the old decor into the contemporary traditional, giving it a breath-taking effect.

Relationships

Double

Jeopardy I

I just had to write this. As I type on my phone, I’m dressing up and about to escape from my own home. Meanwhile I’m laughing my head off. I’m sorry if I’m confusing you, let me explain. It started with T. D. Jake’s ‘The Lady, Her Lover and Her Lord.’ I bought an old weather beaten copy of the book off a vendor while in transit two weeks ago, meaning to finally get to read the famous book, but never got around to it till yesterday. Did you ever pick up a book to read, say like the Bible or other inspirational books, open to a random page and just KNOW that the book was speaking directly to you? Well that’s exactly what happened to me. The page I opened randomly was page 41. I kid you not, I don’t know how it happened, but the book on that page, spoke to me by my given name. It said in part: “God stepped into Lydia’s house that day, and healed everything in her home. He did what none of her fiancés could do. He spoke peace to her home and deliverance to her family...” I got goose flesh reading that paragraph. And of course I immediately turned it into a prophecy and claimed it sharp, sharp! So why am I escaping from my home after such a lovely prophecy? Well because whether in fulfilment of prophecy or not, two men decided to visit me at home at the same time tonight. See my life. From nothing to dramatic at the turn of a page! Tayo (I mentioned him as the Ex who doesn’t want children or marriage and wouldn’t take me to his house) had called me, and

18

WP EDITION 52

2

asked me to go with him to see a movie. I told him I’d let him know, and hung up. Then after reinforcing my self-love with reference to what I’d read from this darling book, I sent Tayo a text to say sorry, but I wasn’t inclined to see a movie with him. Before that, I’d been chatting with Tunji, (his story started on the dance floor of N-Tyce, a bar in Lekki, here in Lagos. We danced, and had a few laughs and have been chatting since then). So Tunji was in the middle of saying he’d like to come over to visit me, and I was saying how the clause was he’d take me to his house so I can know where he lives (I wasn’t interested in another Tayo lesson); That was when Tayo called. Next thing I know, Tunji says okay, no problem, he’d come collect me, so I start getting ready. Then, Tayo, whom I’d sent a text to say no, no movies for me; calls me up to say he’d be at my house in a few minutes, and that he was bringing movies for us to watch!!! My panic meter broke its scale. First thing I’m doing is leaving the house. Then I’m sending a text to both of them to say I needed to attend to something urgently and had to leave the house. How do players deal with this kind of thing? It’s never happened to me. I’ve never been so startled in my life! I’m leaving home just in case they both still insist on coming over anyway. And I’m laughing my head off... P. S, I hope things stay exciting, and keep getting better for me from here on Man wise, but I’m taking a break from “reporting” my life like it’s some stage play. I promise to come back when/if I get married and tell you how it happened. Until then, farewell, keep praying for me, and keep in touch on enitannym@gmail.com. XOXO, I’m Enitan Karohunwi, I’m NYM!

ENTER THE AMAZING DÉCOR WORLD OF

VICTORIA F

20

WP EDITION 52

...wedding plans made absolutely easy!

MRS. VICTORIA FOLARIN is the décor diva behind Victoria F. Events. A walk into her showroom transports you out of this world into a décor heaven! In the same vein, she spares no cost to ensure her signature weddings and other events effortlessly breathe class and luxury; as she goes all out to give her clients the royal treatment. The Victoria F. brand has pulled more clout in the décor industry under just five years; and she says they are still exploring… Enjoy our heart to heart talk with this décor talent of our time.

WP: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE BUSINESS OF DÉCOR? VF: My daughter was going to get married and, had contacted a decorator who gave me an outrageous bill and I looked at it and said to myself “I can do this” and because I naturally have always loved to decorate. Then I went all out, started buying the items I needed and I did the décor myself. This was five years ago. My daughters’ friends saw it and loved it and wanted me to do theirs. WP: BEFORE DÉCOR? VF: I started with clothing, traveling to the states and back. I had a boutique where I sold tops, pants, suits and more. Then I got a bus, I’d go to the port, customs and sell to them. I was also a Guinness distributor. WP: DID YOU REGRET ALL THE PAST YEARS ON THAT JOB? VF: Yes, wish I had started earlier, I would have

been a billionaire by now (laughing real hard). WP: AFTER YOUR DAUGHTER’S WEDDING, WHAT WAS THAT THING THAT MADE YOU TO SAY THIS IS IT, I WANT THIS FULL TIME? VF: After my daughter’s wedding my friends called me and advised that I do this full time, my daughter’s friends, all wanted me to do their wedding decor. I thought I could do it part time, that I would only do weddings over weekends, but when I started, I realised it needed full attention so I left my Guinness distributorship job and the boutique and decided to face this. WP: WHAT KIND OF BRIEF DO YOU GET THAT PUSHES YOU TO GO ALL OUT? VF: I like it when a client asks me what I have to offer, and when they are ready to pay plus a free hand to go all the way, that way I can put my creativity to work. But when budget restricts you, well we still try. We have low, medium and premium packages and we still make sure to

MRS. VICTORIA FOLARIN Victoria F. Events

WP EDITION 52

give a good décor no matter the package. WP: WHAT KIND OF BRIEF ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO? VF: I am looking forward to the day I can turn the whole of ceiling of a hall/ venue into a crystal world, just bling everywhere up. WP: WE KNOW YOU LOVE CRYSTALS, WHAT DOES IT SAY TO YOU? VF: Crystals make me high, as though I am not in this world. Crystals speak when they see lights, they just go talking, I love crystals. WP: LET’S TALK ABOUT THE WEDDING INDUSTRY. A LOT OF PEOPLE DO “CUT AND PASTE DÉCOR”, WHY IS IT SO? VF: I will want to blame it on the fact that a lot people are not ready to pay. And when that is so, you are forced to ask yourself if you should invest in that singular prop? Who will pay for it? But because I have passion, I go all out and invest in the most unique props and trust God with the rest.

WP: WHAT IS THE NEXT LEVEL FOR VICTORIA F? VF: I am waiting to be able to change our style of table setting in Nigeria, but we still don’t have that kind of space to explore, but we will explore more soon. Most halls/venues claim a capacity that does not give room for aesthetics, by the time you find space for the band, the Dj, caterer etc., the is very little space left for you to get creative, but that won’t stop us. Soon, we will do that and more. WP: ON PLANNING AND COORDINATION, WAS THIS FROM THE BEING? OR DID YOU JUST START PLANNING? VF: We added event coordination six month after we started the business, but we only take planning and coordination jobs when the client is willing to let us do it as we deem right. WP: Thank you for sharing with us. VF: Thank you for having me. (for more amazing décor of Victoria F, see page 75)

How to choose and name

your wedding theme

Variety, they say, is the spice of life. What will make your wedding stand out from others is the theme; it should ring in every detail; from stationeries, to decor, outfits, cake, food, wedding favours and every little thing! Of course, no wedding planning can start until a wedding theme is chosen; this shows the importance of getting this right. Choosing a wedding theme doesn’t have to be difficult, you have a lot of themes you can draw inspiration from and most importantly, you and your groom should look within, to infuse both your personalities into

...wedding plans made absolutely easy!

your wedding theme. P.S, Make it your style. Here are some tips to guide you in making some fabulous choices:

Venue and Decor

When you go on outings or for a vacation, what settings, services and atmosphere, catch your fancy? Is it the relaxed and casual or the very organised and official; a country or cosmopolitan setting; do you enjoy the outdoors or being close to nature; do you imagine a fairy-tale wedding or something very contemporary? Your likes should reflect on your wedding venue and decor. Your favourite movies, authors, and stories can also guide you in choosing a wedding theme. What appeals to you most about them? This can help you determine a setting you’ll love for your wedding.

WP EDITION 52

23

Planning

Drinks

You don’t want to deny your guests a taste of your most loved drinks, be it cocktail mixes, choice wines, spirits, and other selections you see as being special to you.

Outfits

Which fashion designers do you like? Is it their choice of colours, fabrics or patterns that fascinates you? You can draw your inspiration from a number of designers to inculcate in your theme.

Photography

What type of photography do you enjoy? Photo-journalism is targeted at the very core of the event or the high points of the day, rather than mere smiles for the camera. Documentary photography covers everything that happens. Photo-journalism and documentary photography are more contemporary than the traditional wedding portrait photography. You can also decide to go for black and white, colour or sepia photographs.

Flowers Know the flowers you do not like and go for your favourite flowers for your big day! Colours

Only your most loved colours would do, don’t let anyone cajole you into choosing a colour you’ll eventually hate.

Menu

Your favourite in food also comes to play. Do you like it local or continental? Which local dishes and which continental dishes? Are you crazy about salads or high on sweets? When it comes to sweets, would you rather do chocolates than any other item? Treat your guests to your cravings and let them know that is what you did!

24

WP EDITION 52

Music

What is your favourite genre of music? Make a list of your favourite singers and their songs.

Side attractions

You can also inculcate a particular hobby or interest of yours in your wedding; such as a collection of artwork or jewelleries? Will you rather have one unique event or as a series of events spread over a number of days? Your likes as well as your dislikes; are yardsticks to your final decision; determining these will help you put together the kind of event you want to create and that will translate into your theme. Once you decide on a theme, it should be your guide in every aspect of the wedding’s organization and decoration; this will make it easily identifiable in all elements of the wedding for the desired effect. However, remember not to over flog the theme.

...wedding plans made absolutely easy!

THE

Beauty & THE Beast

prince Theme

Beauty and the Beast was originally a French fairy tale: La Belle et la Bete. As we all know, the storyline is one that would melt the heart of many “beasts”. Lol! Fairy tale aside, you can create your own fairy tale wedding with the Beauty and the Beast theme. Here are some important details to help you walk down the aisle in the most romantic style!

Flowers: Red and pink roses

The main flower for your wedding should be red and pink roses, they are the most important elements in the Beauty and the Beast theme. You can have them on your wedding jewellery – necklace, bracelet and earrings or simply as a wedding set. Couple roses with pearls and other classic elements, and you’ll be the complete belle picture. Don’t forget to add roses to your bridesmaid accessories as well. You can’t have enough of roses; include them in your bouquets and centre pieces. Roses encased in glass are fabulous centre pieces for this theme, use them alongside candelabras, or better still, candelabras in human form to represent Lumiere, the man turned candelabra in the fairy tale.

Colours: Navy and gold

Navy and gold are regal colours; navy depicts confidence, while gold is associated with affluence; and both colours harmonize easily. To rock navy and gold in the Beauty and the Beast theme, include them in all elements of table settings- table covers, napkins, plates and cutlery, etc. Navy and Gold can be worn by both male and female, therefore you can include them in your bridesmaids and groomsmen’s outfits- dresses, shoes, accessories, etc.

Dresses With your prince charming in toll, what better theme would suit your wedding day than one that allows you to create the fairy tale wedding of your dreams inspired by a Disney movie that has for generations been the favourite of many? You guessed right: Beauty and the Beast! As a most popular fairy tale, the theme is one of strong romance and in a French setting too. When it comes to romance, no one does it better than the French.

26

WP EDITION 52

Look gorgeous in a princess ball dress. Make a bold statement in a yellow wedding dress like the one Belle wore for her dance with the prince; or tone it down to a creamy white or a gold dress. If you’re more conventional, you could choose to have a white dress, while you bridesmaids match out in style donning yellow or navy dresses.

Hair style

A classic or French chignon suits this theme perfectly. Like Belle, you can have your hair partly pinned back and completely side swept, with lots of volume on top. An addition of gold wedding adornments would complete the look. You can also go for full flowing curls, if that’s your deal.

...wedding plans made absolutely easy!

Food and drinks

A variety of French wines are in order. For food, input some French delicacies such as the cocktail hour platter done with chicken, pork, snails and red meat; onion soup; apples and grapes; and lots of sweets like melted and hot chocolate desserts and sweet cake. Most importantly, put your guests’ preferences into consideration in selecting your menu.

Venue

There are a number of options to select from to emphasize the beauty and the beast theme. A vintage building with high ceilings, a ballroom,

...wedding plans made absolutely easy!

or a castle-like affair would all be appropriate; if possible, find a grand library that doubles as a wedding venue. Whatever you do, find that fairy tale-like location that will surround you with the dreamy feel that suits your theme.

Music

The song “Tales as Old as Time” would be the official song for this theme. Play it for your first wedding dance or the father-daughter dance. While “Be our Guest” would be a perfect start to put your guests in a relaxed mood at the wedding reception. Other elements you can explore are the use of bows, barouque and book elements in you décor, cake and wedding stationery.

HOW TO FIRE

A BRIDESMAID Not all that glitters is gold, an old adage yet it still holds true. If one of your bridesmaids turns out to be a mistake; being more of a burden than she’s taking off you, you may be faced with the task of having to fire her. Firing a bridesmaid is not the easiest thing to do; but it’s better done now than have her spoil your big day. If she’s honestly not performing the duties you both initially agreed upon or an unexpected situation occurs that affects her or both of you, and would be an hindrance to her bridesmaid duties to you; then you can relieve her of those duties before things get ugly between you two.

N

There’s only one way out here; and that is to talk. Preferably, face-to-face, one-on-one talk is what’s needed at this point. An email or text may not be able to convey the right message, or lead to unintended implications.

28

WP EDITION 52

1) Have some time-out together: Go to a fun relaxation spot where you can talk privately.

2) Don’t be selfish about it: Try to find out her own side of the story and know why she has not done what you expected of her. So ask her nicely.

3) Be affectionate: Lay emphasis on the importance you place on the relationship you have with her.

4) Avoid bitching: Don’t be judgemental, angry, or cast blames; remember

that the essence of this conversation is to relieve her of her duties without ending the friendship.

5) Be sincere: Show your sincerity enough to apologize if you are wrong.

In the course of this discussion, you may discover that it was simply a misunderstanding and you don’t have to fire her after all. On the other hand, there may be no other way but to let her off your bridal party, but do your best to be loving and respectful about it. Hope this helps, we wish you the very best with your bridesmaids.

Lace & Satin Inspired by the exquisite combination of luxurious lace and silk on a wedding dress. The high sheen of the silk band contrasts beautifully over the matt surface of the cake and is further accentuated by the bright gold embroidered lace appliqué. The crystal stands and studs give it that final touch you can almost hear them saying “THERE’S NOTHING MORE TO ADD!”

How they met

Not many ladies meet their beau at some other wedding; fictitious as it may sound, the love story between Seun and Kemi started in December 2011 during a friend’s wedding ceremony. had not met before the wedding day. In the course of the day’s events, he put his skills to work, and she confesses to being taken by his good sense of humour!

The proposal

Being the die-hard romantic that he is, Seun turned a mission to say “I’m sorry” into an opportunity for a wellplanned proposal. He had Jason Mraz’s song - ‘I’m Yours’, playing softly in the

Then he led her to his living room on a carpet of more yellow rose petals, with ring in hand, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. The ring, with a canary yellow diamond sitting in the middle of it, was the perfect choice for her! The Decor was obviously painstakinly put together by Victoria F 78

The wedding The wedding was themed “Happily ever after”. It was a fairy-tale

affair to foretell the heavenly moments they were about to begin and share for the rest of our lives. The already white hall was decked in silver and more white, bathed in clear crystals and flowing with full blooms of pink and white roses. The conventionally white cake was monogrammed in black and set in a bed of white roses and green leaves that made all the difference. Dashes of pink and lilac added just the right touch of colour in “aso-ebi” and other outfits for the day. ...wedding plans made absolutely easy!

Our Love Story by Ezinne

Zinny had gone to the village to enjoy some quite moment during the festive period in 2012, little did she know she would meet someone that will be part of her life forever. Kelechi and I met so randomly in my uncle’s house in Igbere, December 2012. The village was the least place I thought I would meet my prince charming. Since then, our relationship has been built on genuine friendship, understanding and love for one another. On Valentine’s Day this year, Kels surprised me and flew in to Lagos and proposed. I was entirely clueless about it, as he had planned this proposal with a few of our close family and friends. On the night of valentines, he was unusually giddy and excited but it never crossed my mind what he had under his sleeves. We went out for drinks with our friends and when we were just about to leave, next thing everyone gathers around us and Kels is suddenly on one knee asking me to be his wife. Of course I said YES and the rest is history. It has been a blissful journey so far! ‎
