Choose the Perfect
D
Quinceanera Dress for You
Dresses with A-line silhouette best fit all types of body figures. It is even more perfect if it is designed with the sweetheart neckline. If you want to highlight your figure, a corset type of gown will do that. For girls who are either tall or short with slender body type, gowns with trumpet or mermaid cut should be chosen. This is perfect in highlighting the curves, but for girls with heavy or large bust, the empire cut suits them well. This cut also creates an illusion of a smaller midsection.

INVITATIONS & MORE
Top Invitation Tips
DefineYourQuinceañeraStyle
J www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
Just getting started with your quinceañera invitations? Find out everything you need to know to get them ordered, sealed and delivered.
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
51
Your quinceañera invitation is your guests’ first peek into your special day, so you want to make it shine. Not sure where to begin? We’ve got everything you need to know about this important piece of your stationery right here.
DefineYour Quinceañera Style Along with listing the location and time of day, the invitation—and, more specifically, its style—hints to the formality of your day. You should have an idea of the type of event you’re throwing—classic and elegant, casual and relaxed, or glam and modern—before you start shopping for stationery, so you can choose an invitation style that hits the same note. Then browse stationers invitations to gather inspiration so you can give your stationer an idea of what you like.
Know Your Colors Think about your quinceañera colors too. You may want to incorporate your hues and a motif (if you have one) into your invitations—and then carry them throughout the rest of your paper (like menus and ceremony programs) for a cohesive look. While ivory, cream or white card stock paired with a black or gold font is the classic choice for formal wedding invitations, you can also brighten your invites with colorful or metallic fonts, paper stock, envelopes and liners. Just keep readability in mind when choosing your colors.
Play with the shape and size A 4.5 inch by 6.25 inch rectangular card is the traditional size and shape for invitations. But couples are channeling more playful or modern vibes with circular, scalloped and square invitations. Don’t forget to consider that veering away from the standard envelope size can increase the postage bulky or extra large invites may cost more to send.
Triple-Check the Proof Before your invitation order is printed, your stationer will send you a proof. Don’t just have your fiancé and mom read it over. You’d be surprised at the things you may miss (pay special attention to details like date and time and spelling). Borrow a tip from copy editors and read the proof word for word from right to left so you don’t accidentally gloss over any mistakes.

CATERING EXPERTS
2 Insider Tips for Choosing
the Right Caterer
W
When it comes to the things that can make or break an event, few are as important as the quality, flavor and appearance of the food and beverages you serve. A lot is riding on your decision of which caterer to hire, and if you think this decision really isn’t that important, look at it this way amazing catering can rescue an event that’s on the rocks, but bad catering will almost always send guests to the doors (or, in your nightmare scenario, to the restrooms).
www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
55
In addition, because catering is often the #1 or #2 line-item cost for most events, the caterer you choose is also a significant budgetary decision and can influence how much money you have left over to spend on other areas depending on food costs and quantities. Add in the fact that caterers can vary dramatically in their pricing and the types of meals and services they offer, and the process of selecting a caterer can figuratively and literally feel like you are comparing apples to oranges.
#1 Responsiveness and Personal Interest in Your Needs Of all the event and catering professionals we spoke with, this came up over and over and over again, mainly because how responsive and interested a caterer is during your initial conversations is indicative of how they will perform during the length of their contract with you. Many caterers will claim to have the best-tasting food made with the freshest ingredients at the most competitive price, but it is a rare quality for one to be both quick to return calls and emails and open to critiques and new ideas, While these may seem like somewhat insignificant factors when compared with overall taste and cost, they actually mean that the caterer is truly concerned with meeting the customers’ needs and ensuring that they are pleased with both the product and the service.
#2 Flexibility Regarding Menu Options Practically every caterer has a standard menu or menus to choose from, and many do provide some level of built-in flexibility to adapt these menus to your specific needs by substituting specific items and/or customizing others. Any caterer who has been in the industry and knows what they are doing should have a few different menu options that are constantly being updated and changing to keep up with current trends. However, the standout caterers will go beyond standardized menu options and be willing to create amazing fare that matches even more specific theme and dietary needs. If a caterer isn’t willing to adapt its menu or challenge its staff to work with and celebrate your custom theme, that’s a red flag, we revise menu proposals and attend tastings to finalize each dish’s flavors and perfect the portions and presentation to compliment or amplify our event design and our client’s theme. An ideal caterer should also be willing to handle (or at least consider) special requests. Ask the caterer if they are willing to include a family recipe you provide. Or will they work with items of special significance to the style or theme of your event? Or can they prepare vegetarian, vegan, kosher, or children’s, meals for your guests? All of these are important questions to ask upfront to see how far each caterer you interview is able and willing to accommodate you.

EVENT COORDINATORS & PARTY RENTALS
3 Tips for Choosing
the Best Event Planner
E
Every successful event relies on a combination of trustworthy vendors. It can be a challenge finding the right vendor you need for each piece of the event you’re planning. If one vendor makes a mistake, it could reflect on you and damage the relationship you have with a client or other vendors. This is why vetting vendors and knowing exactly how to negotiate with them is such an important part of the event planning process.
www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
59
1.Determineyourneeds First, have a brainstorming session and come up with what you want each vendor to provide on the day of the event. Sometimes, it’s as simple as an individual running an activation. If you have a solid list of things you want the vendor to do and provide, it’ll be easier to judge their proposal. It’s pretty risky not thinking about your requirements beforehand. These vendors will make sure your show comes together exactly the way it should, so making the requirements easy for them to understand will go a long way. Tip – sometimes vendors will know what you need better than you do. To get the best of both worlds, ask for recommendations along the way and combine those with your own expertise and list of needs. The recommendations given to you by vendors will indicate a lot about how experienced and skilled they are, be sure to take note of it.
2.Googleisn’tyouronlyresource When Googling, don’t be surprised if some vendors’ sites aren’t very stylized or responsive. You’re looking for an industry expert, sometimes a one man band, who may or may not have the resources to keep a nice website up-to-date. The best way to get the information you need from the vendor is to simply reach out to them directly to find out their capabilities. Of course, reaching out to tons of individual vendors can be a daunting task… and really, who has that much time? Event planners sure don’t. To narrow down your options, look into familiarizing yourself with Yelp, event industry blogs, and other sites related to events to help you find the perfect vendor for your event.
3. Go with your gut feeling Weigh out all of your options, make a master spreadsheet, if that’s your thing, and choose a vendor who aligns with your needs and who you feel the most confidence in for the actual event. If you don’t feel confident with all of your options, ask for more information, or go back to the drawing board and get another quote or two from other vendors. When you do find the best choice, things should just “feel” right. The way they talk about the event makes sense, their advice is useful, and the vendor is excited about making the event a success. Do you have other ways of selecting vendors that you’d like to share? We’d love to hear about them in the comments section below. It can be quite difficult to choose a vendor, so I’m really looking forward to hearing stories from others! 62

LIMOUSINE RENTAL
Tips for Choosing
T
a Limo Service
www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
There are a lot of cars and limousine companies to choose from, so how do you know which one to select? You have to do a little research so you get the best limo service for your needs.
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
67
1. Years In business Experience is very important so you want to check how long they have been in business. You want to ensure that everything runs smoothly, so the company you hire should have experience. If you come across a new company, you can check the experience of the drivers. Coordinating a successful limo ride should be done by a company or drivers with business experience.
2. Fleet There are many types of vehicles available, such as, stretch limos, shuttle buses, party buses, custom-built trolleys and stretch SUVs. The average fleet size is five. Smaller companies will obviously have fewer choices and less availability. It is always best to see the vehicle you will rent beforehand. The last thing you want is to be dissappointed when the vehicle shows up.
3. Cost Price is a factor! Limousine companies sometimes have fees that they add on to your base rate. You may find things added like, fuel surcharges, administration costs, tolls and gratuity for the driver. You don’t want to be stuck with a bill that is 30 percent higher than the quote you received. Your quote should be all-inclusive.
4. Referrals, References & Reviews One of the best ways to find good limo services is through word of mouth. Ask a friend, relative or co-worker who they might have used and if they were happy with the service. A first-hand referral may be the best way to select a limousine company. Another option is to check websites to see the reviews that other customers have left. Take your time when selecting a limo. Do your research and it will be worth it. Happy Planning!

CAKES
6 Must Read
Wedding Cake Tips
W www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
Whether a wedding cake is the least of your worries or high on the “must-obsess-over” list, our guide to getting the perfect cake has got you covered. From budgeting to picking out your flavors, we’re going to answer all of your questions before you even have any.
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
71
1.Chooseacakeaftermakingyourmajorweddingstyledecisions You’ll want a cake that’s compatible with the look of your venue, the season, your wedding gown, the flower arrangements and the menu. Arrive at your cake consultation prepared—you don’t need to have a complete sketch in hand, but knowledge of basic terms will make it easier on everyone. And if you’re looking for a custom design, bring along inspiration, like a swatch of lace from your dress.
2. Have a budget in mind Wedding cake is usually priced by the slice. The cost can vary. It’s easy to be wooed by blood orange filling and a multi-flavor cake when you’re making decisions with a sugar buzz, but having a handle on your budget—and knowing what will affect it—will allow you to prioritize your choices. For instance, more flavors equals more money; the more complicated the flavor, the bigger the price tag; handmade sugar flowers will add dollars to every slice; and fondant icing is generally more expensive than buttercream.
3. Match the cake height to your space Generally, three tiers will serve 50 to 100, and you’ll likely need five layers for 200 or more guests. Your cake should fit the space too—if your reception is in a grand ballroom, consider increasing the cake’s stature with columns between the tiers, or opting for a faux Styrofoam layer (no one will know!) to add height.
4.Choosetheflavoryouwant,notwhatyouthinkeveryoneelsewants Besides being a showpiece, your cake should taste amazing too. When you meet with prospective bakers, taste lots of flavors. Don’t be afraid to stray from vanilla and chocolate. And don’t forget to sample fillings too—many bakers are working with complex flavorings, like guava and mango or hazelnut and mocha.
5. Get the facts on frosting Buttercream or fondant? Buttercream is often much more delicious. But if you love the smooth, almost surreallike look of fondant, consider frosting the cake in buttercream first and then adding a layer of fondant over the entire confection. Whatever type of icing you choose, stick to colors your guests will want to eat. If your wedding hues are blue and green, opt for a white cake with subtle green-frosted accents.
6. Consider the weather If you’re having an outdoor wedding in a hot climate, stay away from whipped cream, meringue and buttercream (they melt). Ask your baker about summer icing options or opt for a fondant-covered cake, which holds up much better against the heat.

PHOTOGRAPHY
4 Tips for Choosing
O
Your Best Photos Fast
One of the most time consuming and difficult things in photography is going through all the unedited images you took and choosing your best photos, the ones to keep, and which images to pass by.
www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
SUMMER EDITION 2016 |
79
#1Don’ttakesomanyinthefirstplace When you take hundreds of images at a time, the idea of looking through every photo and choosing the best is daunting! If you take each photo with intent, and wait for the right moments before pushing the shutter, you won’t have so many throw-aways to wade through. Be careful to notice composition as you shoot, and focus carefully. Time is money (and if not money, time is sanity), so don’t waste your time with so many extra images to go through.
#2 Choose images that reflect your style It’s actually quite surprising how much the images you choose reflect who you are as a photographer. Two different photographers could take the same set of images and they’d choose completely different images to keep or toss. This is actually a great thing. It’s what makes you stand out from all the rest, and it lets your heart and soul shine through. I might keep images that others wouldn’t, and toss some that they’d keep, but many people have told me, and that is one of the greatest compliments anyone could give me.
You may notice something in the photo that you know you’ll have to fix in post-processing. You have to decide if this is a deal-breaker, or if it’s worth the fix. In the image above, there was a garden hose. I decided that I loved the style of the image enough that it was worth fixing the garden hose. Other times I might decide that I have enough images that don’t require extra work, and it’s not worth the hassle. If any photos have softness, or blurriness, they’re automatically out. What if the client wanted to print that particular image on a huge canvas? I don’t want to be the one to have to tell them that yes, the expressions are adorable, but it’s going to look horrible when it’s blown up big. It’s so hard sometimes when everything else is great, but if you missed it, you missed it.
82
| SUMMER EDITION 2017
www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
You might have to pick a second choice photo, but do you want to be the photographer that gives out blurry photos? There are rare exceptions to this; sometimes a photographer will shoot out of focus on purpose, or a particular photo will work as an abstract blurry image, but be very picky. This rule can also apply to any photos that are way off with exposure. Just let them go!
#3 Eliminate similar photos You may have two (or more) photos that are very similar. They might both be cute, but one must go. You will lose a lot of impact with your collections of photos if many of them look the same. I know that it can be hard to give up a photo that you like, but nobody needs five photos of nearly the same look and pose. Decide which one speaks to your style better, check sharpness, or choose the one that shows the subject’s personality a little better. In the above set I chose the photo on the right. They are almost the same photo, but the one on the right was slightly more enthusiastic, and this little girl was FULL of enthusiasm! I had to keep it.
#4 Be ruthless, be quick I know, this sounds like a contradiction of the last tip, but unless you want to be agonizing over every photo for hours, you have to move quickly. You have to be somewhat ruthless as you go through your photos. You can’t edit every single one, and sometimes you just have to make quick judgment calls and move on. In the photos above, the one on the left is cute, but I decided that I liked the connection in the one in the middle the best, so that’s the one that I kept.

Tips For Getting
The Most Out Of Your DJ
D www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
Depending on where you come from, the things you take into consideration when choosing the music for your party are dramatically different.
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
85
I would NEVER have used a DJ in a million years, having coming from the school of thought that a DJ is a loud obnoxious creature who incites your guests to do dances you would prefer never be a part of your biggest day (Macarena, ChaCha, Slide, YMCA... I could go on forever). While my guests had fun dancing to the bands I selected, now that I know more, I certainly wonder if we might have had a much, much better time if we’d had a good DJ with a good playlist instead. I’m here to tell you that not all DJs are created equal, and the good ones are worth their weight in gold.
Establishupfrontthatyouaretheclientandyouareincharge Let him know if you don’t like a talker. Tell him if he has absolutely no room for independent judgment. If you don’t want to hear a single song that isn’t on your personal playlist, let him know. Lay out the ground rules and don’t be afraid to be a little bit aggressive and put it writing, asking him to acknowledge your requests. Many DJs prefer you be upfront and direct. Just don’t be rude about it. There’s a way to be demanding without being Bridezilla. Be a little nicer if he’s your only option at the venue.
Be very specific about your playlist and, if he doesn’t give you a good form to work with, create your own and include the following categories: Ceremony - Prelude music - Music for seating the mothers - Music for the bridesmaids’ processional - Music for the bride’s processional - Recessional music Reception - Cocktail music pre-entrance - Entrance song - First dance song - Daddy/daughter dance song - Mother/son dance song - Cocktail music post-entrance - Dinner music - Cake cutting song - Bouquet/garter toss songs - Last dance
Decidewhetheryou’regoingtolettheDJtakerequestsornot Make sure you’re clear on the system with the DJ. If you’d prefer he not take requests, you can ask him to tell people that he doesn’t have the music being requested up to a certain point. If somebody gets aggressive, he might have to explain that the bride and groom have requested no spontaneous requests.

CHOREOGRAPHERS
4 Dance Tips For Picking up
Choreography Faster
W www.weddingsandquinceaneras.net
When a choreographer asks if they can move on, the voice inside your head screams “WAIT NOT YET. DO IT AGAIN SLOWLY WITH COUNTS.” Don’t give up!
SUMMER EDITION 2017 |
89
1.Keepyoureyesoffthechoreographerasmuchasyoucan We have a natural tendency to keep our eyes on the choreographers as we dance, staring them down and mirroring them as they’re teaching. But once you dance without them, you have no idea what you’re doing. It’s important to study the choreographer to properly understand their movement, execution, and timing, but try to wean yourself off of the choreographer. Push yourself to reduce the amount of times you have to keep your eyes on the choreographer before you try it without watching them. The instant you feel you understand their choreography, try to stop depending on the choreographer and refer to them for notes and fixes. Stay mentally engaged, and you’ll start picking up choreography faster.
2. Do the move wrong and move on The choreographer is in control and sets the pace of things in a class, but sometimes you can’t keep up. Maybe there’s that one move or combo that keeps messing you up. Maybe you just need to go over it a couple times for you to get it. We have a tendency to be fixated on trying to execute every single move perfectly, but sometimes you have to settle for “close enough” and move on. You can always come back and improve upon it later. Go over what you need in between gaps of instruction to make the most of your time, but don’t let it stop you from learning the rest of the piece.
3. Don’t dance and just watch This is a little counter-intuitive; don’t dance in a dance class? But sometimes there are details your eyes are able to catch that the choreographer can’t explicitly say in words. If they were to explain every single little detail you’re supposed to be executing, then classes would take days. So if there’s something you’re not getting, just try to catch your breath for a second and really watch what the choreographer is doing.
4. Take multiple classes in a day Taking multiple classes is a huge strain mentally and physically, but it really helped me learn to pick up hip hop dance choreo. It trains you to wipe the slate clean of whatever you learned in the last class and start fresh in the next hip hop dance class. After a couple classes it is likely you’ll be brain dead, and you’ll probably have no idea what went on in the last class, but soon you’ll be able to remember the choreography from all 3 classes that day.

Is there anything more critical to an event planner’s process than planning, planning and planning some more?
