Banquet Hall Selection Tips

Planning a wedding is no small feat, as couples are faced with many decisions seemingly from the moment they get engaged right up until they walk down the aisle as man and wife. One of the biggest decisions a couple will make is where to host the reception. The following are a few tips for couples looking to find the ideal banquet.

* Consider the size of the facility. Some couples prefer an intimate affair with relatively few guests, while others will desire a large wedding party with lots of guests. Couples can find a banquet hall that’s capable of catering to small or large wedding parties, but find one that fits your party specifically. If your wedding party is small, then avoid a larger facility that will appear empty. If the party is large, make sure there’s adequate room so guests won’t feel like they’re sitting on top of one another during dinner and dessert. * Don’t downplay decor. A banquet hall with an attractive decor is not only aesthetically appealing but can appeal to a couple’s finances as well. Such a hall likely won’t need any additional decorations, while a banquet hall that’s unadorned and lacks embellishments will, and those decorations can dip into a couple’s overall wedding budget. Compare the costs of the more decorated banquet hall with the one that’s more plain in appearance, factoring in the cost to decorate the latter, and you might just realize the one with more aesthetic appeal is more affordable in the long run. www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

17

RECEPTION HALLS

* Ask around. Word-of-mouth is a great way to find the right banquet hall. Ask friends or family members who got hitched in the same town where your ceremony will be if they can recommend a reception site. These friends or family members can provide a behind-thescenes look at a reception hall, from how accommodating the staff was to how flexible the banquet hall was with regard to pricing to how open the staff was to suggestions.

the Dress...

The modern teenage girl is fascinated by doing something original with her dress and that is different from the rest. That is why they love the session of “Trash the dress”. This session takes place several weeks after the event of the Quinceañera. The session is very fun because the photos are taken in beautiful natural open air scenes. The images are of excellent quality since the girls are already relaxed. They pose in such a way that they would not do so when their dress is new. Just as with a wedding dress, at the end of the celebration, the dress of 15 years ends up in the wardrobe and there it will remain the same for many years. In addition to that, the Quinceañera will not use her dress again, so she wants to celebrate the fact that there will be no more stress caused by the Quinceañera event. She wants to have fun once more, and what better way to do so than with a session of “Trash the dress”. No matter how expensive the dress is, it belongs to her. She managed to do something fun and different to remember forever the beautiful end of this wonderful turnout. www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

BRIDAL & QUINCEAñERA BOUTIQUE

It’s a simple answer to this question

www.WeddingsandQuinceaneras.net

HOW TO USE ONE WEDDING DRESS FOR MULTIPLE WEDDING THEMES Your wedding dress and your wedding theme will be two of the biggest things on your mind as you go about planning your wedding. So you may be wondering if your dress will fit with your theme and worrying that you can’t get your dress until you decide on your theme, or vice versa. But you can use one wedding dress for multiple wedding themes if you choose your decoration and accessories right.

Classic Ivory and Gold

Ivory and gold is a beautiful and traditional wedding theme and colour scheme. It’s simple but elegant and is very easy to accessorise. This theme can be basic or elaborate, but either way it looks gorgeous. Classic weddings can be held anywhere, from churches, hotels, country houses—wherever you want. But this theme really comes alive in an open space filled with light. For this theme we have white or ivory items with hints of gold—smooth and clean-cut with ribbon and lace and pearls. With the ornate gold detailing on Eternity Bride’s dress, these colours go perfectly and can be spread across your entire wedding celebration from flowers and decorations to jewellery, bridesmaid dresses, and wedding favours. From our shop we’ve chosen an assortment of lace through our Drawstring Bag, Rolled Fabric Lace Flowers, and Votive Candle Holder with Embossed Lace Embellishment. After all, lace is a traditional wedding fabric just as classic ivory and gold is one of the most popular wedding themes. Pearls are a very pretty accessory too, going together beautifully with white ribbon and metals in our Couture Brooch Bridal Bouquet and incorporated in the design of our ornate Pearls and Vintage Gold Wire Floral Mini Ring. Ivory and gold are such easy colours to use throughout your wedding, even on small accessories like our Disposable Wedding Camera and Wine Romance Stationery Tags.

Contemporary Vintage

Contemporary vintage is all of the allure of vintage but with none of the expense—items are newly made but recreate an aged, antique effect.

much richer. Alongside our featured dress, with its lace appliqué and gold detail, this contemporary vintage theme looks perfect.

Art Deco

Art Deco is characterised by its rich colours and geometric, symmetrical shapes. It’s a theme that echoes the lavish Roaring Twenties with its glamourous twists of vintage. Wedding venues well-suited to art deco themes include luxurious mansions and ballrooms. Here, the settings speak for themselves and will dazzle your guests through period Jazz Age splendour.

Vintage weddings are at home in historic venues such as castles and manor houses. But because contemporary vintage is like new vintage, there’s all manner of possibility with what angle you might take—you can have a garden picnic wedding reception in a meadow or under a marquee, or host a tea party under light-strung trees or in a glass greenhouse. To demonstrate contemporary vintage, we chose products that have a tarnished, old-school look made of wood and bronze-effect—like our Vintage Key Stationery Card Holder. It looks wonderful when laid upon textured materials like lace and hessian and burlap. Our Jewel-Footed Wooden

Boxes, Vintage Display Draws and Floral Detail Stationery Holders come complete with an aged finish. Add some fresh or dried flowers to add a pale splash of colour. We also chose a Vintage-Inspired Hollywood Deco Headdress and Antique Lace Hand Fan as gorgeous bridal accessories. The sparkle of crystals and the detail of lace are both a beautiful and traditional look for this wedding theme. Strings of pearls as jewellery or wedding decor add a great finishing touch. Elaborate patterns add life and complexity to all vintage decorations, and warm glows of candle light from lights such as our Bell-Shaped Glass Tealight Holders make this theme that

www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

From our shop we chose white-silver Beaded Garlands that are perfect as hangings from chandeliers or chair backs, golden Art Deco Cylinder Boxes, and Mini Martini Glasses with decorative Metallic Gold Chevron “Sipper” Straws. Black, white, gold, silver and bronze metallics add a touch of class to your art deco wedding and look beautiful as wedding decoration. With this theme comes close attention to detail, so no small element is wasted when decorating your wedding. Table accessories like our Miniature Phantom Chairs look even better with a Black and Gold Opulence Mini Diecut Sticker and black, glitter-tipped Feather Tag, so use your imagination to get more out of every item. Our Parisian Love Letter Large Paper Scroll Shapes are fantastic when put together with Paper Blooms and White Pearl Brads, and our Vintage Typewriter is completed with its matching Card. So, when it comes to deciding on your wedding dress or your wedding theme it depends a lot on what you’re looking for. Not all wedding dresses will be suitable for multiple wedding themes, but some, as seen here, definitely will.

Put a Ring On It! How to make sure your wedding band fits your style. Today, your love story lives online. Take the engagement, for instance. Nearly 60 percent of brides-to-be share their “we’re getting married” news by posting a picture of their engagement ring on Facebook (though about one in five of their fiancées think doing so is tacky!), according to a proposal survey.

Start with the metal. According to a study of wedding jewelry by The Knot, 73 percent of engagement rings are white gold, which also makes up 70 percent of wedding bands. Whether your ring is white or yellow gold or platinum or something else altogether, you’d be in good company sticking with the same base metal for your wedding band. Also keep in mind design elements. Maybe your engagement ring is a full or partial eternity band, or maybe it features pavé diamonds or accent gemstones. You can carry on these elements into your wedding band. White gold also is popular for the groom, with about one-third of grooms picking a blanco band. However, alternative metals like tungsten and titanium (think golf clubs!) have grown in popularity in recent years, not just because of their unique look, but their lower price point. Another trend for guys is “man-gagement rings.” According to the survey, 17 percent of men said they would (not necessary that they do) wear a ring to let the public know they are “off the market.” www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

jewelry specialist

But on your big day – and every day thereafter – your wedding band will have equal billing alongside your engagement ring, even if it may be less sparkly. You’ll want to make sure it is cohesive with your engagement ring and, of course, that it fits your style.

All About the Band What to keep in mind when shopping for wedding rings Maybe you weren’t involved in picking out your engagement bling (or maybe you were, as 36 percent of brides admitted to in a 2012 survey), but when you exchange rings during the ceremony, you and your new husband should both know the wedding rings you’ve chosen will look fabulous. But with so many options out

there, choosing a wedding ring is a like battle of the bands. Spouses should keep a few things in mind so shopping for a wedding ring runs smoothly.

Simple or Extravagent

While men tend to lean towards a simple design, women typically decide to go

another route. “We care about the visual, and they care about the comfort,” says Helena Krodel, director of media and special events at Jewelers of America. “Some men today are opting to add diamonds or black diamonds, but they tend to be pretty straightforward,” she says. Women tend to want special details like an eternity band – a row of diamonds around the ring – or even colored gemstones, Krodel says. If you have colored gemstones in your engagement ring, don’t be shy about also employing them in your wedding band.

Platinum and Gold

“Platimun tends to be the metal of choice for women’s engagement rings and wedding bands,” Krodel says. It’s not only a beautiful metal, it’s also hypoallergenic. For men, the metal of choice is typically gold. But be sure to look for the quality mark and the purity before purchasing a gold ring, she adds. “18 carat gold is what people are opting for most often nowadays,” she says.

Wedding day bling Vintage pieces are trending now Brides generally spend a few hundred dollars on day-of-wedding jewelry — for themselves and often as gifts for their attendants, with the intention of the pieces being worn as part of the wedding ensemble. Two local jewelry designers, Karol Kirberger and Barbara Maira, agreed that brides of all ages are influenced by the media; magazines, television shows like “Downton Abbey,” and movies like the new version of “The Great Gatsby” keep the vintage look popular. “‘Vintage is what we’re known for,” said Kirberger, who co-owns Wild Things, an artisan jewelry store in the Elmwood Village, with Stephaine Robb. “It doesn’t go out of style. Girls are influenced, as I am, by magazines, and also Hollywood. I love the eras portrayed in ‘Anna Karenina,’ and, of course, ‘The Great Gatsby’ right now.”

“In general, jewelry recently has had a focus on retro, even in engagement rings,” said Maira, the owner of Lisa Hunter Jewelry in Williamsville. “With our brides, there has been a shift to antique styles. There’s more attention on it in the media… the ‘20s and ‘30s Art Deco is a popular period for jewelry.” They also agreed that brides do not generally spend a lot on wedding-day jewelry — and usually stick with a white or clear look. Crystals, pearls and less costly stones are frequently sought; they are decorative, affordable and lovely. “Pearls are very popular,” said Maira. “For the most part, brides are not interested in colored stones; they’ll select a clear stone, like a white topaz — it’s very dressy without the cost of diamonds.” “I use a lot of Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls, with sterling silver and gold wire,” said Kirberger. “The prices vary, depending on the stones and materials. Brides love crystal and bling.” Do they go big or keep it simple? It depends on their personal style, say the jewelers. The most popular necklace is the 16-inch choker length, they agree. “I see brides going for the whole kit and caboodle,” said Kirberger, who also specializes in creating hair accessories. “They’ll opt for a headpiece, earrings, necklace and a bracelet. It’s pretty timeless; I love long earrings, and I am seeing long earrings trending for brides.” Other brides show a bit more restraint. “They’re not necessarily doing both an elaborate earring and necklace,” Maira said. “If a bride chooses an outstanding necklace, she will perhaps wear a smaller earring, so the jewelry doesn’t compete. If she selects a showy earring, she may forego a necklace altogether.” Jewelry is a popular gift from the bride to her bridesmaids; often intended to be worn on the day of the big event. “They tell me how much they want to spend, how many people, and I’ll scout around my selected vendors, order various samples, and then they can make their selections,” said Maira. “The girls then have the piece as a keepsake.”

Jewelers can also custom-design a piece using existing elements. Kirberger offers the option to base any of the bride’s jewelry on a family heirloom or special piece — or it can even be a flea-market find that becomes the centerpiece for a necklace, cuff or headpiece. “Right now, I’m seeing headpieces trending,” she said. “I might find a beautiful costume pin at a flea market or antique store and put it on a comb wired with pearl and crystal. No two are alike. Also, for flower girls right now, we’re doing headbands with vintage fabric flowers.”

Kirberger said she gets a lot of enjoyment out of creating these pieces. “I’m touched when I see a bride put on the artisan-made jewelry; it seems to make them feel so special and beautiful. They are overwhelmed when they look in the mirror; I think it’s that ‘dress-up’ feeling, we’ve all done it since we were little girls. It can make you feel, for that day, you are like a princess. That’s the power of adornment.”

How To Look Your Best For The Big Day While one may not hire a makeup artist for everyday events, a wedding is an occasion that often warrants the expertise of a professional. Many brides-to-be and their attendants book the services of a hairstylist to achieve beautiful wedding day hair but may not find it necessary to enlist the services of a makeup artist, figuring they can apply makeup effectively enough. But a makeup artist has a wealth of information in makeup application, as well as knowledge of what looks best under the lights and flashes of a camera. For those spending several thousand dollars on professional photography, an investment in a makeup artist can help ensure the faces smiling back from the photos look their best. Hiring a professional who understands how makeup reads in a photograph and how it looks in everyday light can help any bride-to-be put her best face forward. It also takes away some of the stress of readying for the wedding day. Many doit-yourself brides do not use the right products and can end up looking washed out in photographs. www.WeddingsandQuincea単eras.net

MAKE UP & HAIR STYLIST

Have you ever had your makeup professionally applied? Apart from a trial application at a department store makeup counter, many women likely have no experience with professional makeup artists.

www.WeddingsandQuinceaneras.net

Look Good, Feel Good! From InStyle and People to The Knot and Pinterest, there’s no shortage of websites with photos to help you formulate your idea of big-day beautiful. Austie Eckley, a Portland, Ore.-based hair and makeup artist, says many of the brides she works with find inspiration in celebrity images because starlets typically have top stylists creating their picture-perfect looks.

Brides, especially those who typically do not wear a lot of makeup, may not know how much to apply, resulting in a lackluster finished product. Here’s why the makeup artist can prove invaluable. * He or she can pinpoint your best features and play them up. As an unbiased observer, the makeup artist will not see your flaws but rather will look at your best assets.

to shop prior to your wedding for all of the makeup essentials. * You get a trial run with a makeup artist. Sitting down with a professional gives you the opportunity to try on a few different looks and decide on which you prefer. Do-it-yourself brides sometimes leave makeup decisions to the last minute and really do not have a game plan the day of the wedding.

* Makeup artists use tricks of the trade to enhance or camouflage certain features. They have an intimate knowledge of highlighting and shading they are capable of, through applying makeup, sculpting the face.

* A professional can advise on the right tone. A common mistake made by do-ityourselfers is choosing the wrong shade of foundation. Brides may end up looking like a pasty vampire or someone who has spent too much time in the sun. A makeup artist can help find the right shade and blend it in so there are no apparent lines from the face to the neck and decolletage.

* A professional will know the products available and be familiar with which formulations work best on all types of skin. If you have oily or dry skin, they can work to minimize any appearances of flaws. Also, a makeup artist will have many products and tools at the ready, reducing your need

* A makeup artist can get those tricky false lashes to look natural. Lush, full lashes really get eyes noticed, but many women are unsure of just how to apply false lashes. Lashes may be part of the makeup artist’s insider tricks, and he or she can apply them so no one knows they are not real.

* A makeup artist knows that the bride wants to see herself and not the makeup. He or she is creating the best version of the bride.

The key thing, however, is to know yourself, says Megan Garmers, founder of MG Hair & Makeup, which provides services nationwide. Find examples of your desired look (as well as ones you don’t like), ideally on someone who looks like you. “We all want to look like Beyoncé,” Garmers says, “but if your skin tone and hair type are more like Nicole Kidman, only a small fortune and a really good plastic surgeon can help you.” Of course, you also can point out aspects of pictures that appeal to you, such as flawless, glowing skin like Beyoncé’s, Garmers adds. But if you, say, have short and thin hair, understand that a large bun would require extensions. Print photos or store them on your phone or tablet and bring them to your consult, Eckley says. “Or you can email a ... link to your stylist to help her or him prepare for the trial.” Garmers also offers an iPhone/iPad app called iLook Beauty Book, which includes numerous hair and makeup images that you can filter through for specific beauty profiles, such as red lip, up-do, short hair, hair accessories, etc. It also links through to the artist/stylist’s website so that you can ask how they did the look, get product recommendations or inquire if they provide bridal services in your area or know of someone who does. That said, days or even months of online research and photo accumulation only go so far. “It’s important for brides to come in with an open mind,” Eckley says, “and take advantage of your stylist’s opinion.”

The Simple Beauty Plan “You look beautiful!” Certainly, that’s one of the most common utterances of wedding guests. So common, in fact, it seems as if beauty comes naturally to every bride. Love’s glow may be a force of nature, but experts stress that a stunning bridal look is due to a carefully planned pre-wedding beauty regime. The best plan starts months before the event. Here’s our guid 6 months out: Book the pros If you don’t have a regular hair stylist you love, and if you think you could use a professional hand to apply your make-up, start asking friends whose look you like for recommendations, suggests look in W&Q Magazine for specialist. Selecting a dress and headpiece also are early priorities, and you should book a ‘trial’ makeup application as soon as you know what you’ll be wearing, Smith advises. “Choosing photos from magazines or googling hair and makeup styles [you like] and giving them to the stylist will help them understand what your vision is,” explains makeup artist Ana Baidet, who’s based in Key Largo, Florida. If you’re planning on a tan for the wedding, apply sunless tanning lotion on your face and body, so that the

professional knows how to accent the right skin tone, adds Nikki Robinson, CEO of Gloss and Glam, a hair and beauty service in New York. Should you be dissatisfied with the trial run, there’s still time to book another. Ideally, “hair and makeup should be done on the same day, so you can see the total look,” Baidet says. Exercise, a nutritious diet and sleep are beauty treatments you give yourself, and the longer these habits are maintained, the better the effects, notes Dr. Tanya Kormeili, a Santa Monica, California, dermatologist. 3 to 4 months out: Establish a Cleansing ritual: It’s the mundane daily routine of cleansing your face, gently exfoliating, and moisturizing with SPF that primes skin to be at its peak. Find a group of products that accomplish these basic tasks and are geared to your skin type – and then stick to them, advises Kormeili. And you’ll avoid bad reactions (allergic or otherwise) which could be caused from introducing new products right before the wedding. If you suffer from skin imperfections caused by rosacea, sun damage, broken blood vessels, a dermatologist can usually remedy the situation with laser or other

treatments, says Kormeili. But the skin takes time to repair and heal, and some treatments must be administered over a period of months. That’s why seeing a dermatologist at least four months or so in advance of the date is necessary, she adds. It’s also possible to inject pimples with cortisone to rid them quickly, but try the treatment in advance of the days just preceding the wedding, Kormeili advises. 1 month to 2 weeks out: Trim your tresses “Most brides grow their hair for their wedding, so they have more options for hairstyles,” Smith says. “This is great, but definitely get a trim within the month before your wedding. Split ends make your gorgeous up-do look a little frizzy and the hair doesn’t hold the curl as well. 1 week out: Allow recovery time: “Do not schedule a facial close to your wedding; a week or more is safer if your skin needs some recovery time,” advises Liz Washer, a Northampton, Massachusetts, makeup artist. And, facial waxing can leave redness and prevent make-up from adhering well for the days immediately after the treatment, Washer adds. 1 day out: Relax with mani/pedi: The day before the event is perfect for relaxing in the salon. “This way you are not in a rush to dry your nails, but you don’t have enough time to mess them up,” Robinson adds.

the Invitations...

Tips 4 Beautiful Invitations

Amid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the party from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow. Couples or quinceanera should keep certain things in mind as they begin to design their invitations. * Have a good idea of your potential guest list. Before shopping for invitations, it is key to have a strong idea of just how big the party will be and how many guests will be invited. This way you will know how many invitations you will need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a consideration if your guest list is extensive. * Decide on the formality of the party. Will you be hosting a black tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the shore? Guests infer many things about the party from the invitations, which should match the formality of the event in style www.WeddingsandQuinceaĂąeras.net

59

INVITATIONS AND MORE...

Invitations often provide guests with a first glimpse of a party style. Invitations also may serve as the means by which distant friends and relatives find out about a quinceanera or couple’s pending nuptials if a formal announcement was not made.

www.WeddingsandQuinceaneras.net

and the sentiments expressed. An ornate invitation written with classic wording suggests a more formal affair, while a whimsical invitation with less formal wording could indicate a more laidback event. * Dare to be different by playing with invitation sizes and shapes. Rectangular cards are standard for invitations, but you can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Circular invites or scalloped edges can add some whimsy to the party mood. Invitations that fold out or are embellished with ribbon or other decorations can be appealing. Just keep in mind that cards that are not the standard shape and size could be more costly to send. Always have the entire invitation weighed and priced at the post office so you will know what the postage will cost. * Choose a legible font and text color. Your invitation may look beautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read. Do not risk guests misinterpreting the date or the location because they cannot read the writing on the invitation. Steer clear of pastel or yellow text colors, and remember to have a high contrast between the color of the invitation and the text you are using for easy reading. * Keep the invitation simple. It may be tempting to load the invitation with lots of information, but all you really need are the key pieces of information, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.” Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will suggest a separate, smaller insert in the invitation for the reception information and response card. Never put information such as where you are registered or “no kids allowed.” This is material better reserved for word of mouth. * Do some math. It is important to know your dates so you can receive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guests enough time to respond. A good rule of thumb is to mail out the invitations at least two months before the party. Have an RSVP date of no more than three to four weeks before the day, giving ample time to the caterers and accommodating anyone who procrastinates in sending in a response. You will need the final headcount in order to confirm seating arrangements and plan for centerpieces and favors. * Handwrite the envelopes. Your invitation will look more impressive if you address them by hand, rather than printing them off of a computer. If your handwriting is not very neat, consider hiring a professional calligrapher to write out your envelopes. * Make it easy for guests to respond. Be sure to place a stamp on the response card envelope and have that envelope already addressed with your home address so that guests will have no excuses not to mail a response back promptly. * Always order extra. Mistakes happen, and you may need to send out a few extra invitations that you hadn’t originally counted. Always order extra invitations just to be on the safe side. And don’t forget you will probably want to keep one as a keepsake for yourself.

Sending Out Your Wedding Invitations Counting all the guests

Although they may be obvious attendees, always send wedding invitations to your parents, your siblings and your bridal party, it would be impolite not too. For many religions it is also polite to invite the religious officiant and their partner.

Weighing in

To ensure the wedding invitation arrives in your guests letterbox on time and in tact check you have written the correct postcode and paid the correct postage. You don’t want to have your immaculately designed wedding invitation to be returned for resending or worse, have your wedding guests pay the extra in postage so they can collect your wedding invitation. For a postage estimate, take a complete wedding invitation to the Post Office for a weigh in. Include response cards, registry cards, pew cards, maps and any other inserts you plan to send to your guests. Local and overseas postage costs vary depending on the thickness of the wedding invitation as well as its weight and size. You can also calculate local and international postage rates and find postcodes online at the Australia Post web site.

Emailing wedding invitations

Never, some traditions should never die.

Perfect timing

Wedding invitations are sent 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding, with an RSVP date around 2 weeks before the day itself. If you have wedding guests who need to travel to your wedding, or if you are holding an ‘out of town’, or destination wedding it is advisable to send a Save The Date card. This can be sent up to a year in advance to notify guests of your impending nuptials, particularly when guests travelling from overseas.

the Food...

The meal at receptions has been perceived as very tricky business, because it should be beautiful, memorable, and delicious. “The most important part of your reception is the food. A year from now your guests won’t remember all the details of your wedding, but they will remember how good the food was.” You’re going to have to choose whether you want food served right to the guests or whether they will pick their food from a buffet. A sit-down meal is nice because the food comes right to each guest, so your guests don’t have to get up and wait in line for their food. A sit-down meal is also more straightforward and not as messy. For sit-down meals in particular, you should include one to three courses. www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

All Your Catering Questions Answered

needs. Make sure you’re not only asking whether your guests have any food allergies but also whether you need to include vegetarian or vegan options. Put a little note at the bottom of the wedding invitations asking about any food allergies or no-meat preferences. Caterers should not have a problem incorporating these specifications, and they could either put together a few special plates for these guests or they could keep the problem foods out entirely. You can ask the caterer to provide a list of the nutritional ingredients used in the meals just to make sure they are clear on the instructions.

The buffet is nice because it is typically the less expensive option, because the caterer does not have to individually serve to each guest. Another plus is that guests can choose exactly what and how much they want to eat, and they don’t have to wait to be served. To cater more specifically to different tastes, the buffet can be set up in stations. That way, your guests don’t have to wait in long lines and you can serve different styles of food, like Italian or Chinese. Presentation is a large part of your food choice. Though you want the meal to look nice, don’t choose something too elaborate; chances are the caterer would have a hard time making so many individually perfect meals while keeping each one hot and looking good. If you want to serve something more involved, the caterer will have a much easier time serving for a small number of guests than for a large group.

unusual food, as a good number of guests may be picky eaters and not appreciate the dish you choose as much as you do. There are plenty of meal options out there. Bob Pacanovsky from Robert J. Events & Catering in Akron says, “You might have a favorite family entree that can be incorporated into your wedding menu or a particular theme menu like an Oriental or a French theme.” This will make your meal significant and enjoyable. Another very important part of planning what food to serve is to check to see if your guests have any special dietary

Choose a familiar food that will have a nice presentation and balance the cost with the desired presentation. Lately, weddings have started including finger foods, such as vegetables and dip, fresh fruit, and cheese and crackers as well as hot appetizers like chicken fingers and fried mushrooms. Perhaps you don’t want to serve the traditional chicken, beef or fish meal. You can certainly be original—just try to avoid

The time of day and the formality of your reception help to determine what to serve. Earlier meals of the day will be less expensive, as meals are lighter. You could even get away with just serving finger food. If your reception is outside and less formal, you could grill hamburgers and corn on the cob or you could serve something exciting like barbeque. Just keep in mind that if you serve a really messy food, accidents could happen. Your caterer should be able to give you suggestions and take on your menu choices. Though the reception meal is deemed difficult, it’s only as stressful as you make it— sit down, trust your gut, and you shouldn’t have a problem.

the Experts...

An experienced wedding planner can save you valuable time & money, all the while making your wedding dreams come true. As couples begin thinking about their wedding, they are often overwhelmed deciding how much to spend, where to obtain specialized services and how to choose vendors. These worries can mount as quickly as the cost of the wedding does. And after the euphoria wears off and the reality settles in, it’s shocking to discover how much preparation is involved in planning a wedding. Faced with decisions about everything from the invitation wording to planning their honeymoon, combined with fulltime careers and limited time to devote to planning details, couples often find they want the help of a professional wedding planner. Not long ago, a wedding coordinator was thought of as a luxury, only considered practical for couples with unlimited budgets. Now wedding planners are nearly essential to a well-planned affair, having become indispensable to many brides and grooms who find their services well worth the investment. A wedding consultant guides you through the planning process and the wedding day itself, assisting in whatever capacity you need. He or she can help you refine your ideas, connect you to the appropriate vendors, advise you on proper etiquette and suggest ways to use your budget wisely. Did you know the average wedding can take more than two hundred fifty hours just to plan? You might consider hiring a planner soon after you get engaged if you have a demanding job that leaves little time for much else, if you’re getting married in a city other than the one you live in or if you simply feel overwhelmed by all the details. Since they have planned many weddings over their careers, professionals will have the experience and connections that your average bride will not. www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

the Flowers...

Which Flowers Should You Choose

Besides traditional wedding flowers options, you might want to consider choosing flowers that will be in season when you’re having your wedding. First, think of the colors you associate with each season and which best match your wedding colors or theme; these will help you narrow down the flower type choices. Flowers available year-round include: roses, orchids, lilies and gerberas — all of which come in numerous colors that could associate with any season. Besides these, most flowers nowadays grow all year, though some just seem more appropriate at certain seasons. Below are some helpful hints to get you started on your seasonal flower selection. Winter: Regarding winter flowers, you could go with the snowy white theme for your flowers or choose flowers that contrast to the snow. Anemones, amaryllis, holly, jasmine and poinsettias are good seasonal winter flowers. Also, don’t forget the mistletoe — why not add a little more romance to the air? www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

77

FLOWERS AND MORE...

Whether you choose silk or real flowers, you’ll want to carefully consider what type of flowers you want in your wedding. Choosing flowers you like that go along with the season of your wedding will allow the flower to be at its freshest (and cheapest). It also will help to make the wedding more special.

Spring: as the season of rebirth, is cheerful, delicate and pleasant. Great spring colors are bright yellow, orange, pink and blue. Flowers are plentiful in the spring, so you shouldn’t have any trouble choosing, but some ideas you can start with include hyacinths, daffodils, honeysuckle, irises, sweet peas and tulips. Summer: when you think of summer, think of the sun and being active. Therefore, warm, rich colors are great summer choices. Pair up gold or silver with purple, red, blue or teal. Multitudes of flowers of various hues are available at this time, giving you many choices to create a colorful selection. Among these are: lilies, snapdragons, irises, freesias, forget-me-nots, sunflowers and columbines. Fall: in particular has a seasonal focus on color due to the leaves changing color — autumn colors of reds, oranges and yellows work well for fall wedding flowers. While you can of course create bouquets of orange roses, you can also go with fall flowers like chrysanthemums, dahlias, marigolds and asters. A popular addition to an autumn flower set is fruit like crab apples and even pumpkins. After all, fall is the bountiful harvest season.

The Bouquet Though some trends have blossomed and others wilt, one thing remains true: Flowers are a great way to make a highly personal statement. Generally, the wedding style and formality you choose will influence, if not determine, the style of bouquet that you select. If you keep in mind the overall theme and style of your wedding, the perfect flowers will jump out at you. And it never hurts to do your homework — gather ideas from flower books and bridal magazines to find types and arrangements that appeal to you. When you see a bouquet that captivates you, ask yourself what you like about it. Is it the size; shape; color; style; the way the ribbon is wrapped around the stems? Is the bouquet composed of one kind of flower or a garden’s worth? Visit florists or a flower market to see and smell as many varieties as you can. This way you’re sure to find something that you love, and you’ll know exactly what you do not want.

A bouquet should complement your personality, proportions and attire, all the while remaining in the general aesthetic theme of the day. Provide the florist with a photo of the dress and, if possible, a swatch of fabric — which is particularly useful when it comes to choosing the ribbon trim. You want your bouquet to be beautiful but not take away from you or your dress. Another way to personalize your bouquet is to choose flowers that are expressive of your backgrounds and beliefs. Delve into your own family history and elevate the personal factor of your bouquet. Give your wedding flowers a homegrown flair by picking something you’d find in your mother’s garden or you may

choose to carry a cluster of white French tulips because your grandmother did so. You might even decide to take it a step further by finding flowers by birth month of a late relative; there are truly endless possibilities to honor loved ones through flowers. Choosing colorful flowers that match your wedding palette is an obvious way to personalize your bouquet. Colorful adornments -- from ribbons and fabric to beads -- will make any bouquet meaningful. Experiment with monochromatic blooms and try adding color through the shape -and shade -- of unusual additions, such as dark, rich berries, brilliant green succulents or even jewel-tone sugared grapes.

the Transportation... Photo by Jaqui Photography

Transportation for Your Guests Who wants their wedding to be overrun by transportation woes? Not you, that’s for sure! Enable your guests to relax and party without worrying about how they’re getting home by making sure that you have transportation to get them safely from the reception site to the hotel. If it’s in the budget, consider hiring a bus, shuttle or trolley. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you might even find that you can use your hotel shuttle for free or for a discounted rate after booking your rooms.

Budget Smart: If you have a smaller guest list – and you trust everyone to be ready on time – you might just hire one bus to drop off and pick up wedding guests at one specific time. If you’re renting a limo for your bridal party, ask the company if they offer other transportation as well. Booking more than one type of vehicle with the same company may save you some money. If there’s simply no way to work guest transportation into your wedding budget then make sure to ask your wedding reception site to have taxis waiting at the end of the night. Depending on your reception and ceremony locations, you may not even need to provide mass transportation for your wedding guests. If your wedding takes place at multiple locations, however, common courtesy says you should consider your guests’ transportation needs. www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

81

LIMOUSINE RENTALS

Provide a Timetable: Once you’ve decided on your transportation company, we suggest you contract them to run to and from the wedding reception at specific hours. For example, if your reception is from 6 to 11 p.m. you might have shuttles leaving the ceremony site at 5:45 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Then, have shuttles returning to the hotel at 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. You can put information about shuttle times in the guest welcome packages or on your programs.

Going GlutenFree 4 Your Cake Recently, we’ve seen a lot of couples gravitating toward a glutenfree menu for their wedding– particularly when it comes to cakes. Bakeries and cake shops definitely seen an increase in their gluten-free products over the past year. But exactly why would someone want to go gluten-free? Well, for some people, it’s not exactly a choice. According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, 1 in 133 people struggle with celiac disease – a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. That damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten. The increase in gluten-free cakes is due to the rising awareness about gluten allergies. Multiple different health problems happen because of gluten allergies. Some people are trying out this gluten-free lifestyle in order to see if it will improve their health in any way. Going gluten-free can take a number of forms at your wedding, too. You can have cupcakes or a few gluten-free treats available if some of your attendees have special dietary needs. If it’s the bride or groom who’s sensitive or allergic to gluten, your bakery can whip up a special groom’s cake or smaller cake just for the two of you. You might even go all the way and serve everyone the same gluten-free cake!

www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

85

CAKES

Using alternative ingredients like potato and bean flours, bakeries today can create glutenfree cakes that taste just as delicious as their traditional counterparts. Many traditional flavors, like chocolate, vanilla, carrot and lemon are available without gluten. (Note, however, that flavors that require dye – like red velvet – might not be an option.) It’s important to talk to your baker about your options. However, going gluten-free entirely is not easy. Gluten is found in multitudes of project, even in non-edible products like lipstick and sunscreen. By asking your wedding confectioner if they offer a gluten-free option, you can make this decision to go gluten-free easier. Gluten-free cakes don’t have to taste awful, as many bakeries can make them taste just as good and strikingly similar to their traditional counterpart. Some bakeries have even done entire weddings gluten-free, while guests didn’t even realize it until the lucky couple told them.

It’s a simple answer to this question That is why they love the session of “Trash the dress”.

5 photographic moments you need to get on camera Well done – you’ve booked your wedding photographer. Easy, right? Wrong. Booking a photographer is the simple part. The hard part is briefing your chosen photographer on the kind of photos you’re hoping to achieve on your big day. Photographers are artists, and artists tend to have their own vision.

A few decent shots of the exchange of vows and rings will cement those memories in place for years to come, and when you look back on those moments you’ll be transported back in time to one of the most monumental times in your life. The first kiss “I now pronounce you husband and – smooch! However cheesy or clichéd this may seem,

capturing the first kiss you share as a married couple is pretty much the number one rule of wedding photography. It’s a special moment and one that deserves a mention. The family dance We didn’t choose them, but they are a part of our identity, so we may as well embrace them. Whether you’re on good terms with your family or not, a wedding is a time to accept family for who they are, flaws and all. So get your merry on, grab your family in a group hug and dance like crazy. Just make sure your photographer is aware of this once-in-a-lifetime moment of family closeness!

If their vision coincides with yours, that’s great. But often what you and your fiancé are looking for may differ slightly with your photographer’s natural style. Therefore, it’s important to meet with your photographer before your wedding so you can lay out your wishes on the table, discuss them, and then wait for your wedding day impatiently so you can see your dreams turn into reality. If you are the kind of bride who is very clear on what you want, this process will come naturally to you. However, if you do feel you need a little photographic guidance, we’ve compiled a list of 5 essential moments where your photographer should be present and poised, ready to snap. At the very least, present your photographer with this list, and you’ll get all best photo opportunities on camera. Here they are: The flower girls Whether you like kids or not, you’ve got to admit that dressed up in big, pouffy dresses and adorned with flowers, these little girls make a pretty picture. These little princesses warrant a few candid shots, especially as they walk down the aisle dropping rose petals. Can you get more angelic than that? The exchange of vows and rings This part of the wedding may be one of the most serious moments, but it is also the one where your marriage will become official.

The bouquet throw One of the most comical moments of a wedding is the bouquet throw. It may be a silly ritual, but boy does it make for some great shots! Alert your photographer when the throw is about to take place, and get ready to laugh in glee when you see the shots in print. That brings us to the end of our little list. Of course, feel free to add to it as much as you like. One final thing to remember: your photographer is there to capture your entire wedding. All you have to do is be the bride for the day. So try to forget that your photographer is even there, and get ready to relive the day, detail by detail, when you see the proofs. Bliss!

Photography Mistakes You Didn’t Know u Were Making Have you ever taken (what you think is) the perfect photo, only to find that your finger is obscuring the lens? How about snapping away before realising you’ve left the lens cap on? All photographers – amateur and professional – make mistakes, but if you learn from these errors, you’ll soon be taking better photos. We’ve put together a list of the most common photography crimes that you may not realise you’re guilty of committing. Blaming Your Equipment Problem: Thinking that a new or swankier camera will instantly help you take phenomenal photographs. Solution: The camera doesn’t take photos, you do, so familiarise yourself with your equipment and play with different settings. As you grow in confidence, you’ll become a more proficient photographer. Forgetting to Reset Settings Problem: Ruining that once-ina-lifetime shot because your settings are wrong. Solution: It’s important to experiment with your camera, but get into the habit of turning your settings back to your most-used one, after you’ve finished taking photos. Unclear Focus Problem: You look at your photo and you can’t figure out why you took it. Solution: The subject needs to stand out, otherwise your photos are in danger of being bland and confusing. (Your viewer will wonder what they’re supposed to be looking at.) Retake the picture and make sure the subject is the focus of your image. www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net

the Diversion...

Wedding Entertainment with a Difference If the speeches have finished early or you feel your party might be in need of some extra entertainment then consider hiring some entertainment with a difference.

Suggestions from i-do members: -A capella group -A juggler or acrobat -A magician who involves the guests and bride herself Ask your guests to contribute to the celebrations by recounting stories they may have about the bride and groom or quinceanera. A choreographed piece put together by the party. The bride and groom sing a duet.. As a guest it is always nice to hear your name mentioned unexpectedly so put together a poem or story that includes the names somewhere of all of your guests, sounds like a big job but memorable and well worth the effort. www.WeddingsandQuincea単eras.net

the Dance...

How to Choose a Choreography Company For Your Quinceanera Is dance an expression of emotion? Or is it a presentation? Or perhaps a physical manifestion of how music moves us deep inside? I think it is all three.

A girl’s quinceanera celebration is no different. The quinceanera’s first dance, by tradition a vals (or waltz), is a much anticipated part of the entire event. Today it can vary considerably from one family’s tradition to the next, but typically the quinceanera’s first dance is a waltz shared with her father. Then traditionally, she will dance with her chambelan, or escort, and following will be dances with the entire court, consisting of her 14 damas and 14 chambelanes, her escort, and herself. As evidence to how central the dancing is to the celebration, many quinceaneras today even hire choreography companies to make the dances really unique and personal to the quinceanera herself. If you (or a friend or loved one) are having a quinceanera soon and plan to do this, consider the following in your quest for a choreography company. First, keep in mind that the professionalism of the troupe (or the way they carry themselves and conduct business) is equal to that of its least professional member www.WeddingsandQuinceañeras.net
