Choose a venue with high enough ceilings to allow for decor intrigue, and plenty of space to accommodate towering table arrangements, so that guests can talk around them, and not through a huge explosion of flowers.
DON’T forget the side spaces. Whatever venue you choose, don’t overlook oft-neglected areas like bars, cocktail tables, lounges and restrooms. DO have an understanding of what’s feasible for you. If you’re like pretty much every single bride on the planet, you’ve saved at least a few inspo photos of wedding floral, decor and furnishing ideas you love. OK, so maybe you have 197 wedding-related Pinterest boards, in every design category, each with multiple themes and color schemes. Whether you’re obsessed with wedding design or willing to let your planner and decorator take the wheel almost entirely, it’s really important to understand what can be duplicated or created within your venue, budget, guest group size…and the bounds of human possibility. Show your designer your photos, and make sure to tell him or her not just that you love this centerpiece, or that tablescape, or bouquet, but what you love about it. Your floral expert may point out that an overflowing 50-foot-long table runner made completely of fresh peonies A) doesn’t leave room for plates or glasses or anything that people actually need in order to

A week after moving back from Stuttgart, Germany, Ian, an Opera singer and the venue director of Conroe event venue Madera Estates, met Paul at McGovern Centennial Gardens during a holiday party in 2016. Two years later, Paul proposed to Ian in NYC after a Broadway show, on top of the iconic Empire State building. It was only fitting for the couple to select Madera Estates for their winter nuptials! “As the venue owner of Madera Estates, we knew immediately we wanted to play to the strengths of the venue, while also doing something completely different and unique to us,” says Ian. “Our leap day wedding was a vintage, Spanishinspired evening filled with an abundance of candlelight. Deep and rich colors of navy, burgundy, and saffron were complimented by talavera and handmade wrought iron pieces.” Guests were greeted upon arrival with flower-adorned beer burros and the women in the wedding party wore Frida Kahlo inspired headpieces. The couple tied the knot in a romantic twilight ceremony followed by a show-stopping fireworks display. The celebration moved indoors to Madera Estates’ Hacienda and the newlyweds made their grand reception entrance with adorable alpacas. The evening’s entertainment kicked off with Ian and Paul’s first dance where a drag queen interrupted them acting as a jilted bride! A churro bar and boozy hot chocolate fueled guests for a lively "La Hora Loca" featuring characters on stilts and light up foam sticks. The greatest challenge Ian faced while planning their festive wedding was, “Letting go! As an industry professional, it was hard to not micromanage the process or even day-of details. I call it the blessing and the curse!”

Chandler, a dancer, always gave Stephen, a singer and songwriter, a hard time because he had never written a song about her. Until one day the song Chandler had patiently been waiting for, finally got written, and played, when Stephen proposed to her. Chandler says the biggest challenge they faced while planning their wedding was having to plan it all in just three months, but they pulled it off beautifully at Briscoe Manor! Notes the bride: “We wanted our wedding to be big and have all of our close family and friends there to celebrate us, but we also wanted it to be simple and elegant. It was a beautiful combination of both of those things.” Following a serene ceremony in Briscoe Manor’s limestone chapel, the couple joined 275 guests for an energetic reception where the bride and her dad surprised their guests with a choreographed dance! Favorite moments for the bride included, “Getting ready with all of my favorite girls, seeing Stephen for the first time as I walked down the aisle, dancing with my dad and getting to celebrate on the dance floor with everyone we love so much.”

Alexis got engaged to her high school sweetheart, soul mate, best friend, and spiritual partner Trevor after an unexpected proposal. After picking Alexis up from a trip to the ER, Trevor asked if she still wanted to go out for date night. Never one to turn down a steak dinner, Alexis said yes and went to get ready. “When Alexis came out of my room, the balcony doors were open and rose petals and lights were everywhere,” recalls Trevor. After a heartfelt speech and loads of happy tears, Trevor asked Alexis to be his wife. “The setting of the apartment is especially special because not only was it romantic and intimate, but it was the first place we really experienced dating in the same city after being long distance for 4 years.” The couple wed at The Astorian in a “very classic but ethereal” ceremony, under a custom altar built by the groom. Cascading greenery, lush white floral arrangements and floating candles filled the industrial chic venue. Alexis recounts loving the hanging vines over the monogrammed dance floor while her favorite moments were “My first touch and prayer with my husband and my first look with my dad.”

many resources. So many ideas and possibilities and decisions. Getting your wedding design from elusive notion to exquisite reality is no easy task. Your wedding planner’s first job is to act as your event stylist, helping you narrow down design and floral ideas, and determine what elements are ideal, or even feasible, for your venue, season and budget. She or he will look at wedding-inspo images with you, and reveal the reality behind those pretty pictures, in terms of complexity and cost.

Your wedding planner may also want to visit your home and see what kind of furniture, lighting and home decor you’ve chosen.

ery wedding has a budget. And most professional wedding planners have worked with a vast range of them, and know how to allocate funds to make sure they’re being spent on the right things for your wedding. If you and your betrothed are avid foodies, for example, you’ll want to spend more on gourmet cuisine, fine wine and food presentation, and perhaps less on things like centerpiece flowers or a 12-piece live band. If, on the other hand, you’re all about the party experience, you may want to bring in a DJ and a full band, along with a custom photo booth, choreographed performers, and glow-props for guests to use while dancing the night away on your monogrammed dance floor. Helping you set a budget and spend that budget wisely is among your wedding planner’s most important tasks, and this alone, is worth the price of hiring a planning pro.
planners concur, you will never, ever please everyone with every weddingplanning decision you make. Your planner will guide you on how to graciously but firmly handle a pushy mom or problematic bridesmaid, and will ensure that your most important guests receive special treatment— giving a personal reading, sitting in a place of honor, delivering a meaningful toast, crafting personalized favors—to show them how much you care about them…even if you vetoed their napkincolor demand or centerpiece-height suggestion.

These wonderful wedding planners are able to make their clients feel cared for and listened to, relaxed and reassured. If you tend to lose sleep over decisions, or you’re already feeling overwhelmed soon after saying “Yes,” to that marriage proposal, seek out a wedding planner with whom you really “click” on a personal level. As your guide along this journey, she or he will call or text to check in with you on a regular basis, remind you to drink plenty of water and get enough sleep, gently urge you to get a massage or take a day off work if needed, and always keep you focused on what’s most important: that your wedding is a celebration of your marriage, the most precious promise

After finding their vendors at Weddings In Houston's I Do! Soiree in 2019, high school sweethearts and soulmates, Brittan and Grant chose the chic, modern Hotel ZaZa Houston Museum District for their elegant fall wedding. The couple celebrated their nuptials in iconic ZaZa style, surrounded by a timeless palette of white, gold and black. “Our wedding was very classic; white flowers, gold touches and a mixture of dark effects from the ZaZa Phantom Ballroom flooring,” notes the bride. “The hallway had portraits of us lining the walls—a ZaZa touch that we loved!” A delicious meal and cake with Bavarian cream filling by Susie’s Cakes fueled the newlyweds and their 225 guests for an evening of dancing on a black and white striped dance floor beneath an enormous chandelier.

Lauren and Ricky were family friends for years before becoming something more when they ran into each other at the restaurant Ricky was managing. “I asked him out for a holiday drink a few months later and we have been together ever since,” says Lauren. The day before Lauren’s birthday, Ricky took Lauren and her mother out to dinner, but that’s not all he had planned. What followed was a surprise and intimate proposal at Lauren’s mother’s house. “Ricky was supposed to wait until my birthday to propose, but he says the ring was burning a hole in his pocket and he couldn’t wait any longer!” The couple wed in a traditional church ceremony before joining 225 guests for an enchanting reception at The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa. Notes the bride: “My wedding was a perfect execution of my absolute dream and vision that I have had for years. I had a vision of a room full of candles and large, white orchids and cherry blossom trees reflecting a golden amber glow throughout the ballroom. Gorgeous white hydrangea, calla lilies and roses alongside tall tapered candles filled the room. My guests are still talking about the flowers and decor, calling the ballroom just stunning!" The couple’s only challenge? The groom getting his tux just two days before the wedding!

Church brought Lauren, an introvert, and Paul, an extrovert, together. A romantic proposal while hiking up Enchanted Rock, during which the bride jokes they were “Sharing puns about getting an ‘enchanted rock’ on Enchanted Rock,” sealed their relationship. “I knew from the moment Paul gave me that side hug over two years ago that we were meant for each other. I am so grateful to call him mine for the rest of our lives!” As Lauren and Paul set out to plan their wedding, the couple faced an unexpected obstacle on the road to their wedding day: the Coronavirus pandemic. After having to cancel their original church and reception venue, all hope seemed lost until Paul called his step-grandfather, who had built a church in Galveston over 40 years ago. ”He graciously opened the doors of his church for us and also officiated our wedding,” says Lauren. From there a new celebration was planned and after a whirlwind three weeks of re-planning, the couple’s dream Houston wedding became a Galveston wedding reality. At last, Lauren and Paul pledged their love amidst 70 guests. “Even with six feet spacing between them, our guests felt near to our hearts,” says the bride. The intimate celebration continued at Hotel Galvez & Spa’s Music Hall for a sunny afternoon reception. The decor was soft and elegant, with a delicate palette of sage, pink, peach and cream. Notes the bride: “The bright tropical landscape with the classic vintage architecture was a gorgeous backdrop for a day that Paul and I will never forget.” After heartfelt speeches and dining on filet mignon with roasted asparagus, the newlyweds made their grand exit along the Seawall at sunset. “Although our wedding ended up being nothing like our original plan, it was a beautiful, joyful day.”

Beautiful bridal skin starts from within, with healthy eating and hydrating habits. Combine your good diet and plenty of water with a solid, sensible skincare regimen, and you’ll be well on your way to a complexion that’s ready for its close-ups. for every bride. If you have a dermatologist or aesthetician you see on the reg, you’ll want to consult that specialist to determine a brand or product that’s best suited to your skin type and the problems you want to correct. Generally speaking, though, almost all brides benefit from daily cleansing with a gentle, oil-free cleanser followed by an alcohol-free toner. Apply a skin-specific moisturizer to your clean, patted-dry skin— products with hyaluronic acid work well for most skin types, as they help skin maintain water content. For daytime moisturizing, include a product with SPF 30 or higher, whether it’s included in your moisturizer or applied afterwards. And don’t forget your lips! An alternative option: Simply suds up your brushes with a gentle shampoo, rinse them well, and air-dry them on a silicone mat, or hanging with the brush heads facing down. Not only will you remove gunk and bacteria, but your makeup colors will come out truer, too! Along with dirty makeup brushes, cell phone screens are notorious for transmitting bacteria to the surface of your skin. The solution: Use earbuds, AirPods, headphones or your phone’s speaker setting, instead of holding your phone against your cheek. It’s amazing how much of a difference this small change can make in reducing skin-surface bacteria and minimizing outbreaks, especially on the side of your face. In 2015, Kallie worked at the gym Colt would frequent. Although Kallie was interested in Colt, she was too shy to say hello...until one fateful day Colt messaged Kallie’s friend and co-worker asking if the gym was hiring. Kallie seized the opportunity to finally talk to her crush and immediately took over the conversation to message Colt, ”Take me to lunch and I will get you the job.” From there the rest was history and while on a family trip to Cancun, Colt popped the question during a romantic beach dinner as onlookers and Colt’s family cheered him on. The couple chose the stately Iron Manor for a wedding the bride describes as a “Whimsical fairytale with an abundance of florals against Iron Manor's stark and sleek Chicago style brick, accented with steel beams and gorgeous crystal chandeliers.” Kallie and Colt pledged their love in a romantic indoor ceremony overflowing with lush greenery and blush and white blooms, exquisitely designed by Plants N’ Petals. The whimsical decor continued in Iron Manor’s Crane Hall for an ethereal reception where greenery filled the industrial space. The couple’s most cherished moments from their fairytale wedding day were, “First look with each other, father of the groom officiating the wedding, and dancing the night away with loved ones.”

With a mutual love of exploring small Texas towns, Amy and Jayce set out to visit Navasota to celebrate Jayce graduating from Texas A&M University. The trip became a celebration in more ways than one when they got to the front door of St. Paul's Episcopal church and found a piece of wood on the ground. Jayce insisted Amy pick it up, and she did, “When I did, the sign read ‘New historical marker: Jayce Thomas Gates asks Amy Lane Surles to be his wife’,” recalls Amy. Of course, she said yes! The couple’s wedding was a grand and elegant affair with décor expertly designed by floral design firm Plants N’ Petals. Notes the bride: “The color palette was light and airy with shades of wonderful pinks, cream and chartreuse green with accents of gold. The combination of over-the-top and grand tall florals on square tables, round cocktail tables with low lush florals and candles, and luxurious gold velvet lounge furniture came together to complete a perfect modern and classic cocktailstyle reception look.” For the groom, Susie’s Cakes hit it out of the park with a show-stopping groom’s cake of Minute Maid Park. And it was only fitting for surprise guest Orbit, the Astros mascot, to help cut the cake! The unforgettable night concluded with the newlyweds exiting beneath a shower of rose petals, before speeding away in a vintage Rolls Royce.

Easton and Morghann met in 2012 while Morghann was attending college in Arizona. However, their time together in Arizona was brief because Morghann moved back to Texas to be closer to her family. After six months of a long distance relationship Easton visited Morghann for her birthday...and never left! Eight years and a romantic proposal later, Morghann walked down a custom monogrammed white aisle runner to say ‘I do’ to Easton amidst 185 loved ones. For the reception, the couple added an edgy, modern touch to their venue’s french setting, with a bold palette of black and neutral tones and many personal touches. “There were so many touches to personalize the guest experience,” says the bride. “We had a black tie event and everyone loved being able to dress up for the night and have a wonderful night out.” The celebratory evening concluded with the newlyweds exiting under a shower of sparklers then enjoying a spectacular fireworks display. “The firework show was a special moment we loved sharing with our guests!”

Allie, an elementary school teacher, and Adam, a marine corps officer, met in high school when Adam played football and Allie was the cheerleader assigned to make him treats on game day. They officially started dating before Adam graduated and continued to be smitten with each other while attending Texas A&M University. Adam planned the perfect proposal with the help of Allie’s family. He popped the question to Allie on a platform at her family's ranch, overlooking a bluff, as Allie’s grandfather hid in a deer blind to capture it all on camera! For their summer wedding, the couple exchanged vows in a traditional ivory and blush church ceremony. Adam’s favorite moment was his first glimpse of his bride when the church doors opened. The decor for their reception at Big Sky Barn continued the timeless theme with lush flowers in shades of blush, light pink and ivory. Notes Allie: “Big Sky Barn has a sophisticated farmhouse feel which we complemented with neutral flowers and decor.” The 300+ guests enjoyed a delectable plated dinner of grilled petite filet and pollo Azteca, followed by a classic white wedding cake, a chocolate Aggie themed groom’s cake, and mini Boston cream pies (inspired by Adam’s mom who passed away in 2015) for dessert. After dinner, the celebration moved to the dance floor where the DJ had guests dancing until the wee hours of the night! “Our wedding planner asked if we were ready to go, but the dance floor was full and everyone was having such a great time that we decided to extend the reception for another 30 minutes,” says the bride.

Tiffany and Stephen met at a patio bar in 2015 during Tiffany’s second year of medical school. They instantly hit it off but Tiffany warned Stephen that it was a busy time so dating her could be a challenge. “Luckily, I made time for a second date, and after several evenings filled with laughter and freeflowing conversation, we developed a unique bond,” says Tiffany. “Stephen consistently brought balance to my life and knew how to support me when times got hard. More importantly, we realized how well we worked together and felt certain our relationship was special.” Fast forward to 2018: Stephen wrote to Tiffany's father professing his love for her and seeking his approval, in Vietnamese, with the help of his best man. After receiving her father’s approval, Stephen proposed to Tiffany in Durham, North Carolina and surprised her with an engagement party to celebrate with their friends. The couple joined 225 loved ones at luxurious The Bell Tower on 34th for a “dreamy European-inspired” wedding. The decor was both classic and romantic, featuring lush white and blush florals and softly glowing candles. The newlywed’s most cherished moment was, “Writing our own vows and reading them to each other in front of all our family and friends.”

PLANT-BASED BITES Whether you go for a menu of all-vegan fare (like recent Houston bride Shelley Ewart), or you offer vegetarian and vegan options in addition to meat dishes, you’ll definitely want to make your non-meat-eating guests feel fully included in your celebration. Passed hors d’oeuvre such as vegetable tartlets, stuffed mushrooms, lentil fritters, vegetable spring rolls and caramelized onion crostini are just a handful of mouthfuls that will delight non-meat-eaters and their carnivore counterparts, alike. Plant-based small plates and station-served entrees we love include baked potatoes, bruschetta, Mediterranean favorites such as falafel and hummus, vegetable sushi, pastas and risottos…even “Beyond Burger” bars! their guests are crazy for help-yourself vertical “bars” displaying snacks, appetizers and desserts. Two comfort-food faves—donuts and pretzels—lend themselves perfectly to this type of display, with their handy holes for hanging on hooks or pegs. You can also collab with your caterer to design shelf walls to present anything from sushi to cupcakes to mini-servings of trifle, chocolate mousse or tiramisu, in delicate little glasses. French-fry “cones,” sliders, churros and cake balls also make for whimsical wall-style displays. PHOTO: AMY MADDOX PHOTOGRAPHY

ORGANIC & SUSTAINABLE Across the board, couples are planning their weddings with more consideration for the environment. After all, weddings are celebrations of love, and for many, that includes love for the earth, air and water which sustain us. That’s why so many couples are opting for menu items that include ethically farmed animal proteins (beef, poultry, pork, dairy, eggs) and organically grown produce, from salad greens, to fresh fruits, to herbs and spices. Emily and Nicolas met when Nicolas was overseeing a soccer league and training the kids Emily was a nanny to. He was known as the "Hot Cuban Soccer Coach" and she was called "Romper Girl" because Emily started dressing cuter in hopes of Nicolas noticing her...and it worked! “I knew from almost the first moment that he would be my husband.” On Sept. 10, 2019, Nicolas proposed to Emily with a beautiful custom designed oval solitaire ring on a beach in Costa Maya in the presence of his family. Emily, being a fabulous wedding photographer, has seen countless variations of color palettes, themes and ideas, so for her very own wedding she notes, “I wanted to mix in the slightest bit of boho in our otherwise modern and simplistic wedding theme. We ended up with touches of black to contrast the neutrals, white, champagne and blush.” The couple said their vows amidst 80 loved ones in an intimate al fresco ceremony before commencing with a joyous indoor reception. The biggest obstacle the couple faced while planning their fall wedding was “Just trying to make sure that, even during Covid, we were being as safe as possible, but still got to have the wedding of our dreams. It was so tiring planning the wedding, but when the wedding day finally came, none of it mattered and it was the most beautiful and perfect day!”

Andrew was a baseball player at the University of Houston and Devan was an intern for the department when these college sweethearts first met in March of 2016. Fast-track to Nov. of 2018: Devan and Andrew visited a Christmas tree farm to take Christmas pictures with friends. “Andrew and I were posing when he told me to open one of the prop presents we had and the ring was inside,” recalls the bride. “Then he had a surprise engagement party right after!” The couple wed in a sunshine-filled indoor ceremony followed by a lighthearted reception featuring a photo booth and light up foam sticks, all stunningly captured by Emily Figurelli Photography. The wedding decor was modern and chic with a sophisticated palette of navy, gold, white and champagne. After sipping on champagne and a night full of dancing, the newlyweds exited under an arch of sparklers.

“
There are no do-overs with your wedding day. So, make sure the vendor you task with documenting your once-in-a-lifetime day is the right person for the job. Follow this essential advice for selecting and working with a photographer with whom you really, truly click!
”
1
.FIRST STEPS Starting your photographer search with Weddings in Houston is a great first step. Once
you’ve found a few photographers whose work speaks to your heart, reach out and introduce yourself. At the same time, check out photographers’ Instagram profiles, blogs and online wedding galleries. Ask to see testimonials from real brides and grooms, and request referrals to recent clients who would be willing to share with you their experience with your maybe-photographer. Friends and family members who have recently gotten married or know someone who has, are also an excellent resource for photographer referrals. No matter where you start your search, remember that you want to find a photographer who is not just talented behind the camera, but is reliable and trustworthy, responsible and professional, and good with people.

.THE FULL PICTURE If you ask a potential photographer to send you a wedding gallery to look at, they might send you
only their favorite one. Which may or may not be representative of their work as a whole. Do yourself a favor and ask to see multiple galleries, and feel free to ask for a range of wedding sizes and types. Make sure they send you photos of the entire day, from start to finish, so you can see how they deal with changes in light, how
P H OTO : E M I LY F I G U R E L L I P H OTO G R A P H Y
they capture details versus family portraits versus guests in action, and how their images tell the “story” of the day.

HANG OUT Now that you’ve narrowed it down to the photographer you’re pretty sure is “the one,” it’s time for a
face-to-face. Schedule a time to meet your potential photographer(s) at your favorite cafe, at your home, or at their office. How do you feel in their presence? Comfortable? Relaxed? Edgy? Uncertain? Does this person listen carefully and attentively to your questions, and do they respond in a way that makes you feel secure…rather than offering an overzealous, “Yes! Totally! No problem!” to every inquiry. Remember, you’re going to be spending a considerable amount of time with this person, especially if your photography package includes engagement photography and/or bridal portraits, prior to the big day. You want that time spent together to be positive, and, hopefully, fun! And one more thing: Make sure to ask your photographer how they would react to family and friends who want to take pictures on your wedding day. Your photographer should be able to balance the enthusiasm of Instagrammers and overzealous iPhone-clickers against the importance of getting the professional images you’ve paid them to capture. And they should always do so without scolding or alienating guests—a no-no, no matter how intrusive the amateur shutterbug may be.

PRE-GAME SESSION If time and your wedding budget allow, we strongly recommend doing an
engagement session with your wedding photographer. There’s no better way to really get to know your photographer and see them at work, and for your photographer to get to know you. Brides: Make the most of your e-session by getting your hair and makeup done professionally (don’t forget your nails!). And both spouses should bring several outfits to change into over the course of the engagement shoot, to show off different sides of their personalities, and their relationship. It’s never a bad idea to get a drink before the engagement session, to loosen things up and bond with your photographer. Expect your photographer to offer gentle guidance and posing tips throughout the engagement session—after all, this may be your first professional photo shoot, but it’s far from theirs! On your big day, this understanding of how to pose (and when not to), and your comfort in front of the camera, will help ease your stress and ensure flawless photography, and timeless images.

“Weston proposed in Brooklyn overlooking the water with the NYC skyline in the background,” remembers bride Liles. “It was absolutely breathtaking.” After finding inspiration within the pages of Weddings in Houston magazine, Liles planned a wedding that was both a “fun and memorable” affair with a “romantic” theme. “Our venue was beautiful without any decor, but I knew I wanted to dress it up in a big way for our day,” says the bride who describes a ballroom filled with greenery and colorful florals in a stunning palette of mauve, blush, and creams. The celebration included personal touches such as a live painter, custom cocktail napkins to include their pets, with cute sayings: ”Raise the woof” “Guard your drink” ”Purr me another” and ”Hightail it to the dance floor” and Weston playing “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John with the band on stage. The bride adds, “We also incorporated some very non traditional aspects—I had a Bridesman and Weston had a Best Woman.” Photographer Amy Maddox expertly captured the celebration through her light and airy photography style. “Everyone has asked us what our favorite part about our wedding was, but truly the whole day was just the best day ever. All of it coming together the way I'd very thoughtfully planned was so awesome!”

REAL WEDDINGS

Anna had been dreaming of her wedding day since she was a little girl so when Jack, her college sweetheart, proposed she was looking forward to every aspect of the planning process...but then the global pandemic hit and the wedding had to be postponed. “Instead of worrying about napkin colors and floral arrangements, I was filling hand sanitizer bottles and making sure each table was spaced 6 feet apart,” says the bride. Fortunately, love conquered all, and the wedding day Anna dreamed about came to life at Iron Manor. “We wanted an atmosphere that represented both of our personalities—the industrial yet avant-garde ambiance of the Iron Manor did just that,” notes the bride. “From the venue's vaulted ceilings and extravagant chandeliers to the breathtaking florals, every detail of our day was truly perfect.” The couple pledged their love in Iron Manor’s grand Iron Chapel amidst 235 of their loved ones. The reception décor was modern and elegant with a romantic color palette of blush, burgundy and gold. A unique and personal touch was a scroll that flowed off the cake table with hand-scripted lyrics of the song from the couple’s first date and dance. “For Jack and me to say that we were on cloud nine at our wedding would be an understatement — we were truly #OnCloudShine thanks to our amazing vendors, venue and coordinators, and supportive loved ones.”
