Meet Meredith Hinton, WUMC’s New Minister of Youth This month at Weddington United Methodist Church, we are thrilled to welcome our new Minister of Youth, Reverend Meredith Hinton. Rev. Hinton will begin her new role in April as Co-Minister of the Youth program along with Charlie Brown. She previously served at Weddington as a Youth Ministry Intern from 2009 to 2010 and has since gone on to study and graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from UNC Charlotte in 2011 and a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in 2014. During her time in Divinity School, Meredith also served in Youth Ministry at five rural churches. After graduating from Duke and getting married, she and her husband, who is also a United Methodist pastor, moved to Burnsville where she helped pioneer a youth ministry called Summit Student Ministry. She is currently in the ordination process and was commissioned at Annual Conference as a Provisional Deacon in 2015. Meredith has always felt a strong call to serve in ministry. “I always tell people it’s hard for me to remember a time when I didn’t feel called into ministry... I knew I had an undeniable call to go wherever God would send me. Throughout high school and college I was given tremendous opportunities to explore my call to youth ministry. Charlie Brown was a great mentor for me as I grew and developed an understanding of what it meant to walk alongside youth, disciple them, and help them grow in their faith.” Meredith is looking forward to returning “home” to Weddington UMC. “I am excited to see all that has changed since my time at Weddington, and I am excited to see all that God is doing in the lives of our youth and adults. It is a joy to return to Weddington because of the people and the community. I am thankful to have another opportunity to serve with Charlie Brown and count it a great blessing to be in youth ministry with someone I respect and admire. I am very excited to get to know everyone, collaborate together, and dream about what the future will look like for our youth.” Weddington United Methodist Church looks forward to welcoming Meredith and her husband Rev. Brad Hinton into our community of faith as we seek to Worship God with Passion. The two are also expecting their first child in early September. Her official start date is April 1, 2016.
The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections . Reverend Dr. Terry L. Moore I’ve Got Something the Tell You When a big event happens in our lives, we cannot wait to tell someone. When the engagement occurs, we excitedly tell our family and friends. When we learn that we are going to have a baby, we are so excited. We tell our family and friends and have reveal parties. When the baby is born, we share the pictures and mail announcements. We post these events on Facebook and other social media. Our friends click that they “like” it. We want to share our lives and the significant moments with others. So what about the good news of Jesus Christ? God so loved us that he gave his only begotten Son. He died that we can be forgiven. He was raised so that we might have eternal life. This was not only good news for us individually, but also for our family and friends with whom we share the other significant events in our lives. He is risen! We celebrated with amazing services of worship on Easter Sunday. Now, what do we do? The greatest event in human history has occurred. Jesus said to the women at the tomb, “Go tell.” Jesus told his disciples, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:10, 19). He said, “You will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). For some reason, we seem to be hesitant to share this most significant event that not only affects our lives, but can change the lives of those we love. Perhaps it is because when many share their faith, it is followed by a series of “shoulds” and “oughts.” “You should do this…” or “You ought to do that…”
Page 2
It often evokes more feelings of guilt and shame than joy. Maybe, we just post the good news. Maybe, we just share what Jesus Christ means to us. Maybe, we just share our encounter with the risen Lord. When the women shared what they experienced, others ran to the tomb to see for themselves. Perhaps when we share our experiences with Jesus Christ, others will run to experience Him for themselves. We can trust that the Holy Spirit will help along the way. What God has done through Jesus Christ is a major event in our lives. I encourage us all to share it with the people we love. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Senior Pastor

Monroe Campus Updates and Opportunities Our ministries continue to grow, and the Holy Spirit continues to bless everyone who is a part of what God is doing at the Monroe Campus. On Tuesday, March 8th over 65 people were on the campus between Homework Help, English as a Second Language, and a leadership team meeting. Each of those people experienced the love of Christ in some way, whether it was through reading a scripture verse included in snacks lovingly packed by the students at the WCA middle school, through a warm hug, or through patient ESL instructors. Thank you for your continued prayers and to the faithfulness of all the volunteers on this campus. The children at the Monroe Campus were happy to receive Homework Help is on break until April 5th and will resume handmade Easter baskets from the Sew Many Blessings Life with a new spring time of 3:30-5:00 p.m. each Tuesday and Group at Weddington. Each basket included a booklet Thursday. Volunteers are welcome on both Tuesdays and explaining Holy Week as well as eggs stuffed with scripture Thursdays. You do not need to be a teacher or professional passages and, of course, candy. The children also received tutor to help. The most important thing is to love children Saint Patrick Day treats from the Lucy Price Circle. and to have the desire to share the love of Christ with them. For more information contact Deedie Baldwin at deediebaldwin@yahoo.com or Rev. Erin Yow at erin.yow@weddingtonchurch.org.
English as a Second Language Classes continue on Tuesday nights 7:00-8:30 p.m. Through ESL we hope to help people for whom English is not their first language learn English, the American culture, and most importantly to experience the love of Christ. Volunteer Opportunities are available for people who would like to teach (you do not need to know Spanish to teach), assist in teaching, or provide light refreshments for the classes. We are also looking for people to help with childcare during the ESL classes. By providing care for the children we allow their parents the opportunity to learn. For more information, contact Rev. Erin Yow or Kevin Veith at kevin57veith@outlook.com. Volunteers needed for Vacation Bible School in Monroe July 12th-14th. We will invite the children in the community around our Monroe Campus to come learn more about Jesus. Volunteers are needed in all areas including snacks, crafts, Bible story, and music. Please contact Rev. Erin Yow to volunteer.
Local Missions Lunches needed April 6th and May 4th at Operation Reachout Out. Operation Reachout is a ministry in Monroe that provides a hand up for people living in poverty. Each day they provide a Bible Study and lunch to around 40 people. We are looking for volunteers to provide those lunches on April 6th and May 4th. Contact Rev. Erin Yow to help. Dental Mission May 6-7 at the Monroe Campus. We will host a free dental clinic at the Monroe Campus on May 6th and 7th using the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Mobile Dental Unit. We will provide basic dental care to people who otherwise would not receive it. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, provide light refreshments, and to interact with the patients. Licensed dental professionals are especially needed to volunteer in approximately four hours shifts. For more information please contact Betsy Wollner at bwollner@carolina.rr.com.

Waltonwood Ministry God is so at work in the life of the residents at Waltonwood. The resident in this picture shared his testimony of God’s faithfulness to him at our Waltonwood service on Sunday March 13 at 4:00 p.m. God worked in an amazing way to encourage him to keep pressing forward in faith during a very difficult time in his life. It was in these moments he followed God’s lead to offer a devotional three times a week in a previous senior living facility. His answering of God’s call truly brought forth a sense of vision and purpose. This gift from God was exactly what this resident needed to help him heal. What a testimony! All of us who heard his story were blessed by what be told us. Thanks be to God for how God works through His believers to encourage the body of Christ!

A Testimony from a NAMI Family to Family Class Beneficiary “Dear Reverend Briggs, My wife and I want thank you for providing a meeting place for the NAMI Family to Family classes we attend on Thursday nights at your Weddington UMC facility. Under the guidance and dedication of John and Evann Duncan, who present the program materials from NAMI, we now feel better able to cope with the day-to-day struggles of living with a loved one with a mental illness. The NAMI program is a breath of fresh air when living in a society where the stigma of mental illness leaves families alone in dealing with the daily crisis of mental illness. The program provided us with information regarding the symptoms of different illnesses and what behaviors to look for, and the appropriate medications and medication management. In addition it provided an awareness of the self-care needed for caretakers. We have come to learn, although every individual family situation is different and complicated, the burden is eased through education and the comfort from other class members who face similar challenges.”

students enjoyed a visit from Pastor Simon of Home of the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Kenya. This is the orphanage that the students of WCA support with their ‘Coins for Kenya’ each month on N.U.T.S. day. Pastor Simon led our chapel service that morning and later visited the classes to answer questions from students and to take lots of pictures. We thoroughly enjoyed his visit and continue to pray for him and all the work he is doing at the orphanage and the surrounding areas in his country.

Confirmation Service On the evening of Palm Sunday, we celebrated as 50 confirmands declared their faith in Christ and joined our congregation! Our youth team helped lead worship and Charlie, Lindsay Jenkins, and Dr. Moore shared some words of encouragement. We were also blessed to have our District Superintendent, Sally Langford, there to help us with the service. Earlier that afternoon one of the students was baptized by immersion and during the Confirmation Service five others were baptized as well. In addition to the confirmands, four families joined the church. As a congregation we should be both humbled and excited to welcome these new members. Confirmation is a really amazing season each year for our church and a true blessing!

We are proud to announce that we will hear from Lindsay Franks, who started a 501-3(c) non-profit called Pierce’s Project that serves an estimated 150 micro preemies that come through Charlotte each year. Lindsay decided to start this non-profit after she had her own micro-preemie (Pierce) who was born at 23 weeks and in the NICU for 118 days. His chance of survival was small but with a lot of prayer and support from doctors and the community, he is alive today. We will hear how Lindsay depended on God through her suffering and we will also get a chance to put together bereavement care packages for Pierce’s Project during our meeting. This will help families experiencing challenges of being at the hospital for extended periods of time. Childcare is available in the Nursery wing from 9:15 a.m. 11:45 a.m. Feel free to bring a friend to share in the great fellowship that SWC has to offer.
