WEDDINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Foundation
It doesn't take long watching the news these days to wonder what will our next generation look like. Are we just surviving in the present? Is there anything we can do to improve and equip the next generation for a better future? The very same questions can be asked of believers regarding the faith of future generations. Weddington United Methodist Church has established a Foundation which aims to answer these exact questions in a variety of ways. The goal is to support missions beyond our local communities, invest in capital improvements, as well as aid in unbudgeted special needs of church facilities and ministries. We all desire to leave our children and grandchildren a strong "faith inheritance," which includes sound ministries to not only practice and grow in our faith, but to help others do the same. What type of "faith inheritance" will we leave for the future generation? Perhaps you would consider supporting the Foundation through special one-time donations or through your planned giving. To learn more about the Foundation or donation options, contact the church office.
WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Risen, Yet Wounded I tend to think of odd questions. It used to drive my Sunday School teachers crazy. They never knew what to expect. For example: Jesus did so many miracles in the Bible. He healed a man with a withered hand (Mark 3). The man’s hand was completely restored. He healed lepers (Luke 17:11ff). Their blemished bodies were completely restored. Jesus healed the soldier’s ear that Peter had cut off when He was being arrested (Luke 22:51). The ear was completely restored. The stories go on and on. Jesus was able to completely heal. So, this leads to the question: If Jesus could completely heal, removing any sign of the disease or injury, when He rose from the dead, why did He still have scars from the crucifixion? Why didn’t He heal them and restore his own skin? John 20:24-29 (NRSV) But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." 24
A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." 28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 26
Page 2
Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." 29
Scars are reminders. I have a scar in my hand from trying to make a bank out of an old metal Band-Aid box. My mother had gone outside when I had the bright idea to take a sharp kitchen knife and cut the coin opening in the top of the box. It was going to take some force. I reared back and drove the knife onto the box. The knife bounced off the metal lid and right into my hand. I still remember it. The wound no longer hurts, but the scar is a reminder. The scars in Jesus' hand are reminders of His amazing love for us. The scars are reminders of the ultimate sacrifice. When Jesus stretches out His hands to receive us, the scars testify to us of Jesus’ willingness to die on a cross so that we can be forgiven. The scars remind of the cost of our salvation. The scars are a sign of God’s commitment to the new covenant. Jesus chose to keep the scars. Jesus is risen, yet wounded. Risen, proclaiming victory over both sin and death. Wounded, as a constant reminder of His sacrificial love for you and for me. Happy Easter! Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

Foreign Mission Chairperson . Bob Consoli April Local Missions Spotlight - Fixing It For Christ and Habitat for Humanity During the month of April, as part of our Great Year of Service, we are highlighting serving God with our hands, remembering Jesus, who was also a carpenter. Fixing It For Christ is a ministry built of church volunteers who work together to discover families in need within the Waxhaw area; families that have been part of the area for generations and some who struggle to maintain repair on the aging homes. Fixing It For Christ is dedicated to sharing the love of Christ through presence and tangible support. Let us read some words from one of our church members, Tammy McGee, who is part of this ministry: “Fixing It For Christ is an annual, local four-day long Christian community service project in the month of June that is based in the greater Waxhaw area. Volunteers work to make much needed improvements on homes in the community such as: trimming shrubs at the home of an elderly shut-in, roof replacement and repair, painting, and electrical and plumbing repair." If this is of interest to you or anyone you know, please contact Tammy McGee for further information at tmillsmcgee@gmail.com.” Another avenue for us to serve God with our hands this month is through Habitat for Humanity. One of our church members, Loyd Briggs, shares some words about their mission: “Habitat’s mission is to build safe, affordable housing with people in the United States and around the world that come from a desire to put God’s love into action. No experience is necessary to volunteer. Habitat will teach you everything you need to know and there are a variety of both indoor and outdoor tasks to participate in requiring all levels of skill and ability. Time and time again, the community has demonstrated its generosity through countless hours of volunteering. Through this collective effort, families have been able to move into their very own homes.” Let’s come together as Weddington UMC, and help build a Habitat Home for a family in Monroe! Weddington United Methodist Church has offered to help from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (you must do a minimum of four hours per volunteer day) on Saturday, April 14 and Saturday, April 21. Volunteers must sign a waiver and be a minimum of 16 years of age. Please email our Missions Coordinator, Lisa Keeler to sign-up and receive the address of the home.
Foreign Missions - Romania A Letter From Pastor Cristian Istrate "Last year a project was on my heart that was
much needed: we needed a space that can be used for us daily for discipleship. We obtained a rental space and then with the help of Weddington UMC, we started to buy furniture, buy a professional coffee machine, and a beautiful LCD screen TV. This space is called "The Light House." In March, we started a project for teenagers from a maternity house. They need to hear the Gospel and be attached to God's family. This is a project we did with our partner church and we are so happy for making this possible. This was a pretty big investment but now, we are looking the first signs of harvest and we are very excited. In this new space, we will hold regular small groups meetings, women's groups meetings, and everything is needed in terms of fellowship. We believe that this space is very good to connect with people and grow in Christ. In a time when many churches don't know how to address the Gospel or refuse to preach the gospel, we believe it is necessary to remind once again our Methodist heritage that is so much spoken in the words of John Wesley: 'Lastly, as a Methodist has time, they 'do good unto all people,' unto neighbors and strangers, friends and enemies: and that in every possible kind; not only their bodies, by 'feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting those that are sick or in prison'; but much more do they labor to do good to their souls, as of the ability that God gives . . . The Methodist is willing to 'Spend and be spent herein,' even 'to be offered up on the sacrifice and service of their faith,' so that they may 'all come unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.' We are called to do good in our social work but much more, to the point of sacrifice to preach the Gospel, to offer Christ with the goal that every person will grow in His stature. Many blessings, Rev. Cristian Istrate" Page 3

News and Announcements Caring Hearts Ministry Do you know of someone who physically cannot get out of their homes as much or lives in an assisted living facility? We want to grow our outreach to these people. Our desire is to assign them a Caring Heart Visitor so we can offer them love and support. Please call Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office to give him names and contact information of those who would benefit from having the care of a Caring Heart. Personal Safety Information Seminar Wednesdays @ Weddington will be offering a National Crime Prevention seminar on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Room 19 of the Sanctuary Building. Come and learn to identify and prevent potentially dangerous situations before they occur – at home, in the mall, while driving, wherever you are. Seminar participants are presented with a variety of crime prevention and personal safety strategies and devices you may integrate into your daily life. Called "Refuse To Be A Victim," the program provides participants with the knowledge to develop personal safety plans that fit their individual lifestyles, age, capabilities and needs, so as to increase the chances to avoid a criminal confrontation. The certified instructor for this program is Bill Jackson. He and his wife Peggy moved to the area five years ago after a career in sales, marketing, and operations management, primarily in the technical glass industry. While "Refuse To Be A Victim" does not deal with firearms in any way, Bill is also a certified instructor for Rifle, Pistol, Home Firearm Safety, as well as being a Chief Range Safety Officer.
Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) Testimony "When I got to the rooms of ACA I was a drowning in my control, fear, and anger. I had become negative, irritable, and unreasonable. I thought I knew what was best for everyone else. Why couldn’t my family see that I see what was best for their lives? My relationships were a mess. I was miserable. The ACA meetings became my life preserver. I listened and learned from what was shared by other fellow travelers. I attended six meetings in a row, as was suggested. I kept coming back until I got the program, or maybe the program got me! I first admitted I was “powerless” over other people and my life had become unmanageable. I wanted to please everyone around me, but how was that possible? I couldn't even please myself. I began to put a loving God first, to trust, and to work the 12 steps. As I kept coming back to meetings, I heard the experience, strength, and hope of others, which gave me hope. I started doing service work, talking to newcomers, and offering them the hope I had been given. I learned about boundaries, something that was not modeled in my family of origin. I learned what is mine and what is not. I found freedom in taking responsibility for my own life, while allowing my loved ones to live the life of their choosing. I worked on how to listen to the child within me, how to repair myself with gentleness, humor, love, and respect. I am more aware of what triggers my negative emotions. I continue to learn and feel my true feelings. I’ve torn down walls that kept me a prisoner. I am learning how to “act” rather than “react” to life situations. I ask myself, “what do I think, need, and feel?" Today, I communicate with love and respect for myself and others. I am more loving, intimate, supportive, and accepting of my family members and friends. With the understanding, love, and support of fellow travelers in ACA, I continue to learn, grow, and change into the “real” authentic person God created me to be. ACA is a spiritual program coming from love. The results of working the program of ACA are worth the effort. It works, if you work it! I am worth it and so are you." -Anonymous Page 5

And how do we incorporate scripture into our prayers? Thank you again for being part of this ministry. We are in continuous prayer that our theme and message in every meeting will lead many to Jesus Christ our Savior. If you are interested in learning more, please email us at secretaryswc@gmail.com.
